TURNING UP THE VOLUME ON UNHEARD VOICES

The killings earlier this year of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery—and the nationwide protests they generated—left many in our community eager and energized to actively engage in dismantling systemic racism. SPSCC aims to support these efforts by bringing resources, trainings, and tools to the larger community, and amplifying the voices of those who must be heard. The Unheard Outsider, a podcast produced by the A. Barbara Clarkson Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Center (DEIC), is just one of the ways SPSCC is doing this work. Each week, listeners will hear conversations that center on social justice, discussed through the lens of higher education. The theme for the first season is Learning to be Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable and episode topics range from understanding the purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement to voter suppression. Since in-person events in the DEIC space haven’t been possible this year, Center assistant director Quinton Neal believes the podcast will help fill the gap. “I wanted something available that let people still feel connected to the Center,” said Neal. Although Neal considers himself an introvert, he was eager to start the podcast. “I wanted something I could participate in and facilitate.
