the star of shows is born
Stylish it was, and how! MBS Southscope Style Awards was a show of
The first
effervescence, stars at their spirited best and was packed with a potent dose of style. Mona Ramavat attempts to capture in words the magic of that evening!
Stardom in southern cinema has always been celebrated. It still is and will always be. But style, hugely emulated consciously or otherwise, is seldom acknowledged though not hard to find in the everyday. Southscope decided to dedicate a star studded evening only for celebrating style. And as it turned out, it wasn’t a celebration. It was complete euphoria tinged with some mass hysteria and a grand acclamation to style in cinema in true cinematic style! From the invites for the event to the guest list to the show itself, a distinct sense of style showed in everything. Actors Kriti Kharbanda and Ganesh Venkatraman, the emcees of the MBS Southscope Style Awards announced to a packed gathering (read over 2,500 guests) that true beauty should always be appreciated and true style, always followed. That sort of also summed up our philosophy of style and kick started the evening on a promising note. We say that because what followed created history! Never before have all the four southern film industries come together on a single stage for an evening as unique as this one.
Fashion show choreography: Shaik Shakir Dance choreography: Hormuz Khambata Music editing: Martin, Moily Entertainment and celebrity management: Manoj Khatokar, Southspin Talent management Event: Rythm Mediaworks
Photographers: Ranganath, Ramesh, Sanjeev Kumar and Praveen
There were awards presented to not the best in various categories of filmmaking, but the most stylish. When has this been done before? The awards were given away for the most stylish actors, choreographers, albums and the most stylish films, of course.
Mixed together with the awards presentation were some mind blowing performances by an eclectic bunch, representatives from all four southern industries. Fashion and style certainly don’t mean the same but together they mean a whole lot more than each on its own. it was something like that when three spectacularly choreographed fashion sequences were also interspersed with the show. depicting the black and white era, the retro age and the contemporary style in southern cinema, the fashion sequences were much lauded to say the very least. adding all the magic to the ramp was everyone from Shriya Saran to Reema Sen and Shruti haasan with allu arjun and Shraddha das, Ram Charan tej and others. off the stage, it was an intermingling of another sort. how often do we see someone like Chiranjeevi (who still remains the face of telugu cinema) catch up with say a new entrant like lakshmi Rai from another state? or Madhavan converse effortlessly in five languages (he can greet in Malayalam and Kannada too). and devi in his true signature style, flirt with everyone from Sharmila Mandre to a random guest whose name he never bothered to find out. of course, he did it, but not without taking a dig at our Playboy Bunny who seems to attract every girl of south cinema with magnet like efficiency! it was all of this and more. no words can do justice to the experience of the first MBS Southscope Style Awards. there’ll be many more to follow. But the first is well, always special!
Southscope is a sincere attempt to hold a mirror to the world on the strengths and expertise of southern cinema, about celebrating style and substance alike. The first Southscope Style Awards is but a glimpse of what we so passionately believe in! Moorthy Sreenivasulu. Publisher
…and the trophy was made thus …and the trophy was made thus
The inimitably chic trophy of the Style Awards tangibly translates Southscope’s philosophy of style in an elegant whirl of simple steel. Rahul Ganguly and Anil Merani cut across Hyderabad and Mumbai to get some behind-thescenes drama that went into the making of the prize catch. The brief on artist-photographer-adman Ramakanth’s desk was well, brief. He had to come up with a strikingly original design for the mBS Southscope Style Awards trophy, and deliver in record time for the show. Set into motion next was a crazy schedule of ideation and well, more ideation touched by creativity under extreme pressure. This is where the story becomes interesting. “The design was part of an evolution process. The first challenge before sitting on the drafting board was to come up with a single motif that represents the south as a visual metaphor,” Ramakanth begins to tell us. Selecting a common symbol for all south Indian cultures and transforming it into an iconic symbol was, nothing short of an uphill climb for Ramakanth’s creative team. Moreover, time was soon running out… “Keeping in mind the importance of tradition, we realised that the banana leaf, as a symbol stood for the south of India in a rather holistic way,” Ramakanth continues. Conventionally, the omnipresent banana leaf has been associated with hospitality, warmth and fertility, and is still the preferred medium of serving food on auspicious occasions, in most south Indian homes. These qualities instantly gelled with the vision of style and substance that Southscope holds. “Once we zeroed in on the initial motif, the rest was a process of molding the basic design to embody a sense of timeless visual elegance,” adds Ramakanth. Delving into the technical details of the design, he explains, “By wrapping the leaf into a spiral, we visualised conveying a sense of evolution and constant improvement, which symbolise the core values of brand Southscope.” Enter Award Gallery, the Mumbai-based company that manufactured the trophy. With an impressive portfolio that includes the best of film awards, Award Gallery was the best choice for having the design executed. Says Jagadish Sonawane of Award Gallery, “We tried out a number of options for the material for the trophy, ranging from crystal glass to acrylic, before settling for polished metal.” After a contemplative pause, Ramakanth adds, “Steel stands for qualities of endurance and timelessness, attributes that are synonymous with the mBS Southscope Style Awards.” Over a period of around 45 days that followed, the final design emerged but not before it went through a number of refinements, “resulting in a sleeker and more elegant interpretation of the original design,” Sonawane adds. In the business of making award trophies for over forty years, Award Gallery has seen many awards evolve and grow. Despite being old timers in the trophy making business, Sonawane remarks that the creative ride with the Southscope team was a refreshingly productive experience. The Southscope Style award, while tipping the scales at around 2.5 kg, is actually lighter than the trophies of the yesteryears. “In fact, certain government awards are so heavy that it takes two people to hold them on stage!” Sonawane quips. “I am sure over time the banana leaf will become the face of Southscope,” he says. Keeping the basic idea constant, the design is likely to be updated and fine-tuned over time, in the same way that Southscope will constantly evolve.

performances The MBS Southscope Style Awards show was nicely interspersed with a bunch of vivacious performances that were raved about till many days after. karthik pasupulate gives a blow-by-blow account.
they danced like nobody was watching... the night of the MBS Southscope Style Awards had some never seen before moments in south indian cinema. when we say never seen before, we mean every syllable of it. you will have to read on to believe it ... if you have not seen it already that is. it was a carnival of style that unfurled amidst a potpourri of music and dance. with stars like Priyamani, Mumaith Khan, devi Sri Prasad, nikitha, Jenifer Kotwal, among others, the performances were breathtaking to say the least. But among the most talked about was allu arjun’s befitting tribute to the King of Pop. we’ve seen him do his thing on screen but never before on stage. when was the last time that a top south star did live gig on stage? well, never! dressed in classic MJ Billie Jean outfit ... the hat, the jacket, the shirt, white gloves, the tie and trousers, white socks and shoes – arjun set the stage ablaze while we saw him transform with ethereal intensity. he never danced, we’d say, he treaded on hearts! the mass hysteria he managed to create pinnacled when arjun had Prabhu deva join him for an impromptu moon walk together. Entertaining us with equal élan was music composer devi Sri Prasad who sang, danced, made us sing and dance and left us asking for more. Performing to a medley of some of his most popular compositions (including Arya 2, Mallanna, Jalsa, Andamaina Papalu) dSP was in his element. he sure was a show all by himself!

the ladies too made sure the testosterone levels were running to the brim as they turned it on. Kannada actor nikitha thakral set the mood for the evening with her effervescence and some groovy moves. Jenifer Kotwal followed suit and only made it so much more special, dancing to some of the latest foot tapping numbers like Mama mama chandamama. anybody who left midway would have surely regretted because Priyamani’s performance was strategically planned for the second half! the national award winning actor is counted among the best performers in the industry and the crowd got to know why, first hand. the elaborately choreographed sequence blending indian, western and freestyle movements made for a delightful visual treat. But the showstopper certainly was Mumaith Khan. at her titillating best, Mumaith began her magic with the hugely popular Bangaru kodi petta. the girl and the item blended together thereafter and the best was naturally saved for the last. yes, you guessed it. the Naa peru Meenakumari number made even the most stiff among the audience get up to sway with the rhythm or at least tap to the beat. when she exited the stage, many wanted her back. Some even followed her backstage, we hear. dance and music can do that to you. add a never seen set of dance performances and you know what we are exactly getting at!

Fashion with some passion! And stars rampaging the ramp…it’s how style in southern cinema at the MBS Southscope Style Awards was celebrated.
54 SOUTHScOPE Dec 09
Haute the fashion sequences at the MBS Southscope Style Awards were unique, a sensual treat and captured fashion in the cinema of the south with some pizzazz. the nostalgia of the black and white era was revisited with the first sequence by designer asif Merchant and the second sequence was an ode to the retro, by ashwin Mawle. the grand finale had everyone from Shriya Saran to Shruti haasan walk the ramp showcasing the contemporary style in southern cinema, a sequence put together by ashwin ash. the sensuous Shriya Saran sported an anand Kabra creation, while Reema Sen did an Eeram ali number. Shruti walked with allu arjun in a Rehane creation and Charan sported a smart designer sherwani. then there was Shraddha das looking stunning in an ashwin ash outfit. it was unique, we said. when else have so many southern stars walked the same ramp to celebrate style in cinema…

Acting was never his dream career until Nandyala Rakesh Sharma bagged the Mr Personality award sometime in his high school years. That’s when he developed up an interest for the ramp, which naturally gave way to a passion for the screen. After college, Rakesh did a course in flight management and trained with choreographer Ajay master for the ramp. He’s just about wrapped up acting classes from the Actor Studio in Hyderabad and will be a part of the forthcoming film, Ella Chudu Okasari. Actor certainly in the making? We’ll find out.

All fun and play india is the largest producer of cinema in the world, with an output of over 1,300 films every year. But less than one percent of them happen to be children’s films. Guess that explains why only seven indian films were deemed worthy for competition in the festival this year. it is only the film festivals that have kept the spirit of children’s cinema alive. the week-long, 16th international Children’s Film Festival was all about that, and not just the films. A lush offering it was a celluloid celebration of a different kind. with a foot fall of about 1.2 lakh children, the iCFF-09 witnessed the biggest turn out ever. that was helped largely by the efforts of the Children’s Film Society to allow free entry for children. after all, what’s a children’s film festival without the children. after watching 70 films from 20 countries we are sure, most kids went back with rich experiences and a good taste for world cinema.
its recent season in hyderabad was perhaps not the best, but the 16th international Children’s Film Festival had its moments. Karthik Pasupulate reports on the great (and the not so great) of the biannual festival.
The honours
The irony. . .
in the asian Panorama segment, the iranian films, as usual proved to be better than the rest, both in quality and numbers. with four awards, iran deservedly walked away with a clutch of honours. Half Mine, Half Yours by Vahid nik-khah azad, was adjudged the Best Film by the children’s jury, in the asian Panorama section. director Rasin Kheireh’s Cunning Tailor and The Young Man won the award for the best animation film. Masud naqashzadeh and Purya aqili walked away with the best screen play and best short film awards for The Child And The Angel and I Feel Pity For The Ozone Layer respectively.
there were kiddie films galore but the festival had its share of issues. Right from day one, the iCFF was in the news for all the wrong reasons. it all started with noted director and former Union Minister dasari narayana Rao complaining about the poor treatment meted out to children’s films made in regional languages. he also urged the CFSi office to be moved to hyderabad, which is the permanent venue for the iCFF.
China spoiled the party for iran, winning the much coveted Golden Elephant for the best film in the asian Panorama. a touching tale of the trauma of an hiV infected kid, Two Men’s Classroom, was a deserving winner. German filmmaker, Christian ditter’s Crocodiles was adjudged the Best Film in the international competition. india featured in the list of awardees as debutant director Pandiraj bagged the prestigious Golden Elephant Best director award for Pasanga. Made on a shoe string budget of Rs. three lakhs, Pasanga, explores a rather unusual theme focussing on the personal and academic pressures faced by children, while tracking the lives of five kids falling in the 10-plus age group.
Meanwhile a section of media could not digest the fact that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s message was not included in the official brochure. this only diverted attention away from the event. But our best guess is that such aberrations are a part of any event organised by the government. Too Few it is the selection of films that make a film festival. there were some great films no doubt, but with just 34 (18 in the international competition and 15 in the asian Panorama) films in the competition segment, there was certainly room for more. let’s just say, the iCFF was choc-a-bloc, more with children than films. But then, an average festival is better than no festival, any day.
