Scituate Animal Shelter held a Tails and Twilight Gala fundraiser event on May 14 at Cohasset Golf Club. This festive celebration honored the organization’s 30th year helping animals find forever homes. The evening featured food stations, a live auction, raffle prizes as well as a parade of rescue dogs and an artist to create pet portraits.

River Rock is a music festival held on the banks of the North River from 4 to 9 p.m. The bands playing this year will be Bethel Mountain Pass, Paragon Park and FiveEven. This family fun day is complete with food trucks, craft beer and cider, live entertainment and more. Lemony Basil Pesto

2 cups firmly packed basil leaves

¾ cup olive oil

Zest and juice from small lemon

½ cup toasted pine nuts

¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan

3 cloves garlic

2 teaspoons Hippy Pilgrim Basil Garlic Salt

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and process until smooth. Makes about 1 1/3 cups of pesto.

Toss with pasta, drizzle on pizza, mix with mayo or butter to make flavored condiments, add to cream to make a basil cream sauce for lasagna, garnish a caprese salad with it, toss with fresh zucchini and grill…pesto is so versatile it can be used on everything from chicken to seafood! If you cannot find pine nuts or find them too costly, substitute walnuts or pistachios for an equally delicious result. If you do not consume dairy substitute vegan parmesan, a TB of nutritional yeast, cashews or just omit the cheese altogether. It will still be delicious.

Resourceful Tip: After pouring the pesto into a storage container a lot of pesto sticks to the inside of the blender container. I hate to see things go to waste so I add milk or cream to the blender and process it. The result is pesto cream which I like to use as a base for cream sauces to add extra flavor with zero work.

AUTHOR TALK - REBELS AT SEA: PRIVATEERING IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The James Library presents author Eric Jay Dolin for a talk about his book “Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution.” This heroic story of the founding of the U.S. Navy during the Revolution has been told before, yet missing from most maritime histories of America’s first war is the ragtag fleet of private vessels, from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war, that truly revealed the new nation’s character―above all, its ambition and entrepreneurial ethos. Weir River Farm Trail Run

The 6th annual Weir River Farm Trail Run includes running the trails of Weir River Farm and neighboring Whitney and Thayer Woods. There are three race distances to choose From: 9.3 miles, 6.0 miles and 3.4 miles. The Weir River Farm Trail Run offers runners a first-class trail race, but is also designed to showcase and raise awareness for the Farm’s property, programs and CSA (community supported agriculture) operations.
