Building began in 1901on this Colonial Powder Point home.The housewas built as asummer home for afamily with two small children and theoriginal land extended to Upland Road with gardens and aCarriage House.With gorgeous views of both the bay and the gardens,it was referred to as "TheLong View." The builders set up camp on theproperty and all work was doneon site.

Thehousehas maintained thefamily-friendly footprint.While somemodernization has taken place,thehome's original grandeur remains intact.Thefloors throughout areoriginal. Once stained dark walnut,the floors havebeen refinished to the natural fir.Thecurrent owners built afull basement which was a massive undertaking and took ayear to complete! Today,the basement is abusy workplace.(Notethedouble banisters for safety on all stairs.) To theright is an exerciseroom and beyond that aworkshop.

Upon entering the home,the celery-colored living room draws you in, complete with family portraits from the 1700's of Jeremiah Hardy Hendren,aBaptist minister,and his wife To theleft of the fireplaceis a Captain's desk from aMississippi Riverboat,dating from the mid 1800's It was purchased from aplantation owner in Louisiana by Dr Hendren's grandfather and was given to him when hewas aboy Note the beautiful hand-crafted woodwork in the living room and the exquisite corner cupboard in the dining room The dining room is painted ashrimp color in astrietechnique Over thefireplacehangs a portrait of Major Jeremiah Hardy Hendren,CSA(Confederate States of America),great-grandfather of the owner.Aportrait of Mrs. Hendren hangs over the buffet.It was painted by Kent Broadhurst in 1960.Thetablein the dining room was built by Dr.Hendren in 1949 when hewas amedical student.

Originally the Library was two rooms;one for after dinner coffee and one for smoking! Thefireplace sideof the room is original and has never been refinished Thecurrent owners built the bookcases Afull bath is located through theoffice,which had previously been a porch

The solarium can beaccessed from the living room and the dining room.It would beeasy to spend days gazing at the beautiful views from this room.The murals on the ceiling of this bright,sunny room werepainted by the homeowners' daughter-in-law about twenty years ago

The expansivekitchen is on the far-right side of the homeand also features beautiful views of the bay Originally,this space was two rooms and a porch,intended for the help.Meals were prepared and served from here.Theoriginal soapstonesink is in the butler's pantry.This was also the sitting room for thehelp. Remains of the in-house telephonecan beseen.The large cupboard is original to the house.Thedecorative painting was done by the owners Back stairs for the servants?use can beseen in the far right corner

When moving up the second level viathe main staircase,note the portraits of the homeowners' fivechildren.At thetop of the stairs to the left arethe original maid's quarters.Thecurrent owners gutted the spaceand useit today as a guest area,especially for families.The bedding on the king bed is a buttercup-colored chinoiserieand the room is accented by beautiful Asian-inspired watercolors.

Across the hall from the maid's quarters is another guest room with aprivate bath The grand,old,well preserved bed herehas been in the family since the mid 1800's Many Hendren children and ·grandchildren haveslept in it After traveling from Tennessee to New Orleans to Kansas City to Boston to Kentucky,it has returned lo Duxbury

Down the hall to the left is the master suite.Originally three rooms,walls were removed and picturewindows installed to give avery spacious and magnificent view of the bay, theharbor,Clark's island and beyond! Closets wereadded to increasethe functionality of thespace.In the far right corner of the sitting room notethe antiqueround tableand two chairs Thesearefrom the mother of the homeowner and stayed with her in her homein New Orleans until her passing at theage of 105 They area treasured possession of the family

Across the hall from the master bedroom is theupstairs library.It doubles as sleeping spacewhen thereis an overflow of guests.Theowners can sleep twenty two comfortably.

Continuing to the third floor; on your right,formerly Nanny's spaceis now an ideal spot for grandkids and their friends On the left with a step-up is another bedroom When the house was built,this room was designated; "The sail drying room " What a job it must havebeen to carry the sails threeflight of stairs at the end of summer wherethey hung from the ceiling for the winter
