Academic Success and Bar Preparation
Law school is challenging. But from the beginning, Southwestern supports your legal education journey with one-on-one support including peer mentorship, research-backed teaching methods, customized writing instruction, and meaningful relationships with faculty focused on your learning. We’ve got your back! Academic Success & Bar Preparation Department: Faculty facilitate courses, workshops, student programs, and one-on-one counseling sessions to help students build practical study skills and understand their learning styles. Bison Boot Camp: Entering students participate in a free, week-long intensive course during the summer, practicing the skills needed to succeed during their first year of law school, and beyond. Campers get a head start on what to expect once classes begin. Dean’s Fellows: Upper-division students with track records of academic achievement mentor new students and help them develop crucial skills such as time management, reading and briefing cases, and outlining. The Writing Center: Faculty and students with a demonstrated capacity for legal writing guide other students through written assignments and drafting exercises. Writing Center staff go beyond proofreading and help students develop the skills necessary to be confident and exceptional legal writers. Additionally, the Writing
Center hosts the Storytelling Project, a speaker series based on the concept that all lawyers must tell stories. Bison Bar Pass: Southwestern has developed a supplemental bar preparation program tailored to our graduates’ needs. Students benefit from bespoke services, including individualized feedback, unlimited review of practice exams and essays, simulated exams, and customized study schedules—usually available only through private tutoring.
