COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER AND HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT The Honorable Kevin C. Brazile Superior Court of Los Angeles County Kevin C. Brazile’s professional and Judge personal achievements are impressive

in both number and nature. His Honor is a perfect fit as the keynote speaker for Southwestern Law School’s 2020 graduating class. Like Southwestern’s and like many of the 2020 graduates’, his story is overflowing with many firsts. Some examples are: First member of his family to

graduate from college, then law school, and then to become a lawyer; First African-American elected as Los Angeles Superior Court’s Assistant Presiding Judge; First African-American Presiding Judge of the largest court in the nation; First African-American division chief of the Los Angeles Office of the County Counsel (General Litigation Section); and, Created a political action committee benefiting sitting judges facing election challenges – furthering his “winning hearts and minds” leadership style. Judge Brazile’s personal mantra is “prove them wrong with a smile on your face.” When not on the bench, Judge Brazile frequently speaks to high school and college students. He believes that if he did it, so can they. Judge Brazile is well-known for his positive attitude and a million-dollar smile. During his career at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, Judge Kevin Brazile has presided over numerous general civil jury trials based upon employment discrimination/harassment, intentional and negligent personal injury torts, wrongful death actions, breach of contract claims, medical and legal malpractice claims, premises liability, and asbestos litigation. Before his appointment to the bench, Judge Brazile was a civil trial attorney for the Los Angeles County Counsel’s Office from 1984-2002. He was appointed Judge to Los Angeles Superior Court by Governor Gray Davis in December 2002. Before his 2008 assignment to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, Judge Brazile served as the Site Judge of the West Covina Courthouse, starting in 2005. Judge Brazile graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (Cum Laude) in 1980 and earned his Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law in 1983.

In Loving Memory of Alan L. Calnan Professor of Law

Professor Al Calnan, a widely esteemed member of the Southwestern faculty for almost 30 years, passed away on April 20, 2020. A prominent legal scholar in the fields of tort law and jurisprudence, Professor Calnan’s four pioneering books on torts place his work within extremely exclusive company. Professor Calnan's latest writing project was both his most ambitious and potentially his most prodigious. Organizations frequently sought his counsel on a range of important issues. Most notably, Professor Calnan was invited to study and report on the civil justice concerns raised by terrorist bombings. Highly regarded by both his colleagues and students for his innovative teaching methods, “[h]is passion for teaching was evident in the lengths he went to ensure that his students had multiple learning mediums and ample time to examine public policy and philosophical considerations on a deeper level,” shared a former student. He credited his wife, Marcy Calnan, a fellow educator, for contributing to his innovative teaching methods by “generously share[ing] her passion for digital learning, her ideas and lesson plans for interactive pedagogy, and her incisive and discerning observations and critiques.” In acknowledgment of his service to students and the law school community, Professor Calnan was awarded Southwestern's Excellence in Teaching Award for 1999, and was named as the Irving D. and Florence Rosenberg Professor of Law for 1999, the Paul E. Treusch Professor of Law in 2004, and the Irwin R. Buchalter Professor of Law in 2010.

THE HISTORY OF ACADEMIC DRESS VINTAGE SOUTHWESTERN CLASS PHOTO

T

he traditional academic attire that we see as a colorful part of commencement exercises had its beginnings in the Middle Ages when the university first developed as an institution of higher learning. The most important centers of intellectual life in the 10th Century were the monasteries— centers least affected by the disorders of the time. The relative stability of the monastic life left monks free to develop systematic graded education for the first time in the history of Western society. The first students were monks and priests, and the costumes they wore were more for protection from the weather than as distinctive regalia for the scholarly way of life. Caps were a necessity in the cold, drafty buildings and capes and hoods were also worn for warmth. In later centuries, as the British universities passed from the control of the monasteries, the costumes took on brighter colors, and the hood was singled out as the item to be made distinctive for various degrees by color, trimming, and lining. The use of caps, gowns, and hoods has been continuous in the United States since Colonial times—the tradition having been transplanted from Oxford and Cambridge to the New World. However, the dress code was modified and the vivid colors so prevalent in Great Britain were eliminated. Prior to 1895, faculty academic costumes varied widely from university to university. Since few people knew the distinguishing marks or colors for the various degrees, the dress code was standardized for all American universities. At the same time, students began a movement which would spread throughout the country to make academic regalia an integral part of the commencement ceremony. A desire to make the festivities more impressive and interesting as well as to add grace and dignity to the ceremony led the students in this successful endeavor. Southwestern students participating in today’s commencement ceremony are wearing regalia for the degrees of Master of Laws and Juris Doctor. The gowns for the Master of Laws degree have full, rounded sleeves marked with three purple velvet bars to indicate the completion of a master's program. The gowns for the Juris Doctor degree have full, rounded sleeves marked with three black velvet bars to indicate the completion of a doctoral program. The academic hoods for both degrees bear purple and white edging identifying Southwestern Law School as the institution conferring the degree. The purple tassel signifies a legal studies degree. Students who have been on the Dean’s List (top 10% of each class at the end of each academic year) or participated in academic co-curricular honors or extracurricular service programs are wearing stoles in distinguishing colors as follows: Dean’s List—scarlet with white lettering, Moot Court Honors Program—white with purple lettering, Negotiation Honors Program—green with white lettering, Trial Advocacy Honors Program—purple with white lettering, Law Review—gold with purple lettering, Journal of International Law—purple with gold lettering, Journal of Media and Entertainment Law—silver with purple lettering, Los Angeles Public Interest Law Journal—maroon with silver lettering, Student Bar Association—navy blue with gold lettering, and the Public Service Program— blue with white lettering. Dean’s Fellows are wearing blue cording. Southwestern Torch Bearers are wearing silver cording, honoring their connection with Southwestern alumni, faculty, or staff members.
