Five Symptoms and Warning Signs of Alcohol Abuse

Too many people in this world suffer from alcohol abuse. Not only does it effect the person doing the drinking, it can also have negative effects on those who are around the abuser. Take the time to recognize the 5 symptoms of alcohol abuse, and learn how to treat it effectively.

1. Excessive Alcohol Use 2. Avoiding Responsibilities 3. Spending Time at Alcohol Related Events 4. Frequent Excessive Use of Alcohol 5. Drinking in Dangerous Situations

1-Excessive Alcohol Use • As a general rule excessive alcohol use would be considered drinking to the point where the person blacks out and cannot remember things the next day. • You could also define excessive alcohol use as drinking too much alcohol, due to not knowing their limit. •

This is particularly harmful because drinking in excess can inhibit the ability to make wise decisions.

2-Avoiding Responsibilities People who abuse alcohol often drink to forget. There may be an ongoing problem in their lives that they do not want to deal with. Drinking helps them forget about the problem, enabling them to avoid dealing with it. The problem is still there when the effects of the alcohol wear off, thus the endless cycle often repeats itself.

3-Spending Time at Alcohol Related Events

There are some individuals whose whole life revolves around alcohol. If they are not drinking, they are not having fun. Usually for these people, the first question out of their mouths when invited to an event is likely "will there be any alcohol there?". if they suggest a place to go, the place will always have alcohol available. Usually the first thing they want to do when they arrive is get that first drink in their hands.

4-Drinking in Dangerous Situations

This is a huge symptom. As mentioned earlier, those who abuse alcohol often black out or make unwise decisions. Someone who abuses alcohol continues to drink in dangerous situations, mainly because they are already to the point where their ability to act rationally is gone. It is not uncommon to find them drinking while they are driving, which is the ultimate dangerous situation.

5-Frequent Excessive Use of Alcohol Some would define frequently as everyday, however there are people who come home from work and have a glass of wine, or a beer everyday and that is the extent of their drinking. Frequent excessive use of alcohol is in a totally different category. It can be defined in many ways. A person who drinks more than their limit on a daily basis has a problem with frequent excessive use of alcohol. Likewise someone who drinks every weekend to the point of excess could also be said to have frequent excessive alcohol

use.
