Welcome to Your Norfolk Life Why do people gravitate to the land of big skies? The long and beautiful stretches of coastline, swathes of rolling countryside, picturesque villages and abundance of wildlife will often top the list of reasons why people love Norfolk. This county has some of the best pubs and schools in the country. There’s the Broads which offer long days relaxing on the waterways, which have even offered celebrities an escape from the outside world. The fine city of Norwich offers a unique shopping experience and is a haven for creatives, being a UNESCO City of Literature. Renowned chefs have established iconic eateries, including Galton Blackiston’s Morston Hall and Roger Hickman’s Restaurant. The rolling hills and flat vistas are a dream for cyclists, the nature reserves are a second home for bird watchers and the open spaces being the perfect antidote to life in the big smoke. But there’s much more than first meets the eye. Towns across the county feature regularly in The Guardian’s ‘Let’s move to’ guides, which often celebrate independent businesses, the local producers and their strong sense of community. Here at Sowerbys, we love Norfolk and everything it has to offer. So, we’ve put together this guide which not only showcases some of our favourite towns and villages, but it also has some great ideas for you to explore Norfolk like a true local.

Where will you decide to settle?

Burnham Market

BURNHAM MARKET

Within easy reach of the stunning north Norfolk coast and its walks, beaches and restaurants, Burnham Market offers something different and is for many people the jewel in the crown of north Norfolk. Georgian buildings surround a village green, which is home to more than 30 independent and specialist shops, including an Italian deli, wine merchant and milliner, making this a high street unlike any other. Burnham Market boasts a wide range of restaurants, pubs and tearooms which allow for a relaxed feel and you may even spot a celebrity or two in The Hoste, the famous luxury boutique hotel and spa! Nearby, you will find historic houses such as Holkham Hall and Houghton Hall, beautiful coastal and woodland walks and wildlife trails, and the stunning sandy beaches of north Norfolk. It is also close to the sailing hotspots of Brancaster Staithe and Burnham Overy Staithe.

Typical of the north Norfolk area, Burnham Market offers picturesque country cottages and large farmhouses alongside flint-built family homes and beautiful Georgian town houses.

Villages Around Burnham Market NORTH AND SOUTH CREAKE

North Creake and South Creake are two attractive villages about three miles south of Burnham Market on the River Burn, perfectly positioned for the north Norfolk coast. Both villages boast picturesque properties set in rolling countryside and offer a range of community activities from a cinema club to a gardener’s club. There are also welcoming pubs, a children’s play area, tennis courts and a fishing lake. Nearby is Creake Abbey which hosts an award-winning farmer’s market, along with shops, studios and the ruins of an Augustinian abbey.

 AMENITIES: Pubs, post office, shops, historic sites

DOCKING

Docking is a pretty village just six miles from Burnham Market with a small supermarket and post office, a fish and chip shop, a pub, a large village playing field, tennis court and bowling green. There is a weekly farmers market with stallholders including a baker, fishmonger, a butcher and greengrocer, and with stalls selling local cheese, preserves and cakes. There is a village archaeological project to locate the site of a lost priory believed to have been built in the area during the 13th century, so watch this space! The inland village is perfectly placed for the north Norfolk Coast and its long, fine sandy beaches.

 AMENITIES: Pubs, post office, shops, market, outdoor activities. BRANCASTER STAITHE

Brancaster Staithe is a small coastal village, centred around the harbour, with a thriving fishing community and ideal for the sailing enthusiast. Scolt Head Island is a Nature Conservation Area, set in an Area of outstanding natural beauty and is only a boat trip away, depending on the tide. Brancaster Staithe boasts a sailing school and two pubs, The Jolly Sailors, and The White Horse with superb coastal views. Brancaster is justly famous for its mussels. There are many local walks around the village including Barrow Common with views over the coastline or the Norfolk Coastal Path, which runs the length of the village, along the marshes.

 AMENITIES: Pubs, café, petrol station, shops, tourist information. THE BURNHAMS

Burnham Deepdale, Burnham Norton, Burnham Overy Staithe and Burnham Thorpe are a cluster of small villages surrounding Burnham Market, each offering a different slice of coastal life. Burnham Deepdale is right on the coast where tidal marshes and the harbour offer stunning views. Burnham Norton is a tiny village on a loop off the A149 coast road. It has no shops or pubs and is set in a quiet, dreamy spot with fabulous views across the salt marshes. In the churchyard lies the body of Richard Woodget, Captain of the Cutty Sark. Burnham Overy Staithe is a small village on the north Norfolk Coast with a natural tidal harbour with good walks across the marshes and long sandy beaches. Burnham Overy Town is a small historic village with no shops, but Burnham Market is right on the doorstep. Until the end of the Middle Ages trading ships were able to reach the village of Burnham Overy Town and whenever a ship arrived a gong would be sounded at the top of Gong Lane, alerting the farm workers to unload the incoming goods. Burnham Thorpe is very much off the beaten track away from the coastal hustle and bustle and is famous for being the birthplace of Admiral Lord Nelson.

 AMENITIES: Pubs, petrol station, shops, historic sites, markets.

The beaches you didn’’t know about...

Until now. Norfolk has its fair share of awe-inspiring coastlines, and its beaches are often voted some of the best in the country. From traditional resorts to deserted miles of tufted dunes, you’re spoilt for choice. Holkham, Wells and Hunstanton often feature as people’s top picks, but with 84 miles of oceanfront, there are some gems which are yet to be discovered by the masses. Can you keep our secrets safe?

Trimingham

Access to this remote stretch of sand is very limited, which is part of its charm as few bother to make the effort to get to this secluded spot. Park up in Mundesley, grab an ice cream, bucket and spade, then head north west along the beach and feel smug as you leave the people behind. You will often have the sand to yourself and as it is part of the Deep History Coast, you may well uncover fossils and sea stones.

Weybourne

If arcades, shops and sand aren’t your thing, this could be the beach for you. If you dream instead of a stretch of steep shingle where the soothing sound of the lapping waves rushes through the pebbles, then head to Weybourne. It is clandestine enough to once be frequented by smugglers and the deep waters, perfect for a shore swim, were considered a possible site for invasion, hence the secrecy!

Scolt Head Island

Only reached by low tide, either by walking from Burnham Overy Staithe or by ferry in the summer, Scolt Head Island is a true desert island. The four-mile-long sandbar is a designated National Nature Reserve and is mainly made up of soft dunes, sea grass, salt marsh, mud flats and pure white, wide sandy beaches. It’s perfect for a quite walk or swim, and fantastic for spotting breeding terns, teals and curlews.

Holme-next-the-Sea

Located where The Wash meets the North Sea, this beach is home to Holme Dunes Nature Reserve, a haven for wildlife and migratory birds. It is also the location of the discovery of Seahenge, a bronze age wooden circle, which can now be seen in Lynn Museum. The golden sands of Holme are the perfect place for a classic bucket and spade afternoon, before heading to the village pub.

Bob Hall Sands

Very few locals have ever heard of this stretch of coast. Nestled among the salt marshes near Wells-next-the-Sea, a thorough knowledge of the tides is required as there’s only a three-hour window each side of high tide where the marshes are navigable. Once passed the dunes, the sea is revealed. The beach is deserted except in winter when pink-footed geese roost here. 14

Dereham

DEREHAM

Dereham is a lively market town in the centre of Norfolk, which dates to Saxon times. Dereham is steeped in history and although many of the wattle and daub houses were destroyed in two great fires in 1581 and 1670, the 16th century Bishops Bonner’s cottage remains and is now a local museum. The Mid-Norfolk Railway also boasts one of the largest preserved railways in the UK today and it regularly hosts unique events. The high street contains many of the shops you’d expect to see as well as pubs and restaurants, and markets are held every Tuesday and Friday. There are open air tennis courts, a cinema, a skate park and children’s play equipment in the town and a non-league football club, Dereham Town FC, plays at Aldiss Park. Nature lovers can stroll along the Neatherd Moor and the Vicarage Meadow. Being in the heart of Norfolk means transport links are good, with the A47 allowing easy access to King’s Lynn and Norwich.

Villages Around Dereham NORTH ELMHAM

The popular village of North Elmham lies on the west bank of the River Wensum and is packed with character properties and charming cottages. Within the village is the grounds of the old cathedral and the ruins of the Bishop’s Chapel which are fantastic to explore.  AMENITIES: Butcher, village shop, post office, garage, primary school, pubs, village green, village hall, sports clubs.

LITCHAM

Litcham is a small village between the market towns of Fakenham and Dereham and is ideally positioned for the Norfolk coast. It’s described in the Doomsday book as ‘a market town in the centre of Norfolk’ although it’s much older than that with Roman roads found nearby. There are walks in the nature reserve on Litcham Common and down the river Nar. There are two schools, a primary, and the very much in demand, Litcham High School.

 AMENITIES: Pub, butcher, doctors, post office, general store, schools.

HINGHAM

Hingham is an active market town situated in the heart of rural Norfolk. Grand Georgian architecture surrounds the market place and village green. It was in the 18th century when the socialites of high society built and took residence in Hingham that it became fashionably known as “little London”. The many and varied independent shops have the special character of a small market town but are up-to-date in what they provide. There is also the high regarded restaurant, The White Hart Hotel, which offers fantastic local produce.

 AMENITIES: Gastropub, café, library, primary school, health centre, doctor’s surgery, butcher.

It’s often called the gateway to the north Norfolk Coast as it’s well positioned for the coast and other local attractions like Pensthorpe Waterfowl Park and Fakenham Racecourse. The best family days out

 Steve Adams

If the sun is shining and your little ones are throwing around the phrase ‘I’m bored’ like it’s confetti, there’s plenty you can do to explore the county together and make memories. Here are our favourite picks.

Snettisham Park Farm

This is a fantastic opportunity to get up close and hands on with farmyard animals and deer. Depending upon the season, the 329-acre working farm allows you to watch lambs being born and bottle feed them, collect fresh farm eggs, ride ponies and take a deer safari to meet the magnificent herd.

Bircham Windmill

One of the few windmills left and the only working one in the area, Bircham Windmill stands in the heart of Norfolk’s undulating fields. Climb the five floors, learn to bake bread, pet the animals at the farm and watch the sheep be milked. It’s a fantastic way to learn about and interact with our local heritage.

ROARR! Dinosaur Adventure

Get active both mentally and physically at this Jurassic themed park. Life size dinosaurs lurk in the woodland so follow the trail and collect stamps to win a prize. There’s also a deer safari, splash zone, high ropes course, secret animal garden, maze, indoor and outdoor play areas and a fossil dig.

Norfolk Lavender and Farmer Fred’s

Norfolk Lavender is the country’s premier lavender farm and is renowned worldwide. Take an educational tour of the fields before heading to the animal gardens and playpark to burn off some energy. Also on site is Farmer Fred’s, an indoor adventure play barn with spiral slides, 3D rock face and interactive games.

Pensthorpe Natural Park

Voted Norfolk’s best large attraction in 2014 and 2015, Pensthorpe Natural Park is bursting with activities to inspire every generation. The nature reserve is home to a huge variety of habitats, all teeming with wildlife which can be viewed from trails, hides and aviaries, and there’s several gardens and a play area.

Holt

HOLT

Holt is one of the most attractive small towns in Norfolk in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town existed before the Norman invasion but was destroyed by fire in 1708. It had to be rebuilt and we’re very lucky that the timing meant that the Georgian style was used. The main street is lined with colour-washed Georgian buildings, many of architectural importance. There are tea and coffee shops, lots of antique and curio shops, food shops and delicatessens, banks, independent shops and, of course, historic Gresham’s School founded in 1555. The north Norfolk coast at Blakeney is six miles away due north. There is good sailing, golf, bird-watching and many good beaches nearby. The North Norfolk Steam Railway has its terminus on the outskirts of the town and connects Holt with the seaside resort of Sheringham six miles away. Holt is particularly attractive at Christmas when all the shops adorn themselves in lights, making for a festive wonderland.

 PROPERTY TYPES

Holt is dominated by Georgian architecture dating back to when the town was rebuilt following the Great Fire. You will find Regency town houses, new-build flats and apartments, Victorian terraces and cottages and imposing Georgian family homes.

Time on the water

With such a long and varied coastline and plenty of inland waterways, spending time on the water is a huge part of the Norfolk identity. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or long-term landlubber, there’s something in Norfolk for everyone to enjoy.

Whitlingham Lake

If frolicking in the ocean isn’t your cup of tea, head to Whitlingham Lake where there’s no waves to wash you out. Part of The Broads, Whitlingham Country Park offers a wide range of water-based activities for people of all ages and abilities, from canoeing and kayaking, to sailing, windsurfing and stand up paddleboarding. If you prefer a slower pace, you can walk the perimeter of the lake, or take a guided trip on solar boat, Ra, to experience the watery wildlife, green banks and woodlands.

The Broads

Norfolk’s only National Park has over 125 miles of navigable waterways set in wide-skied countryside and peppered with picturesque villages. Did you know the Norfolk Broads has more miles of waterways than both Venice and Amsterdam? But it attracts just a fraction of the visitors. Adventure through vast marshlands and feathery reeds, moor up at waterside pubs and keep your eyes peeled for magical wildlife. Captain your own boat or have a unique experience onboard a rare wherry boat, an historic transport boat which can be hired for daily or weekly charters.

Hunstanton

Hunstanton is the home of water sports. Get out on the sea and learn to kitesurf, polish up on your windsurfing skills or set out and explore on a paddleboard. The cross onshore winds make it a safe environment for beginners, and Hunstanton Watersports offers lessons from fully qualified instructors. If you’re experienced and have your own equipment, powerboat owners can launch their craft from here and water skiers ply the coastline. You may even catch an international competition!

Sailing in north Norfolk

Blakeney is the north Norfolk hotspot for sailing, but you will need your own boat. If you’re delving into this more sedate, watery world for the first time, head to Brancaster Staithe where you can learn to sail. If you want to explore the coast with an experienced captain at the helm, take a day trip with the Coastal Exploration Company. The traditional Norfolk fishing boats transport you to discreet locations from the quietest creek to the open sea. Get involved or sit back and simply connect with nature. 34
