HIGHRISE @401 N. WABASH Fall 2016 Studio Project Design Guide : Dr. Michael Kim
Team project with Ashwini Rangaraju, Boyuan Dong and Yingjia Wang The skyscraper is the outcome of Comprehensive Integrated Design Studio with the aim being to design a mixed use high rise building efficient functionally, structurally and aesthetically. The concept of the building was to give the otherwise masculine skyline of Chicago a soft touch with a graceful skyscraper. To achieve the form, the structure of the building has core + outrigger and additional tensile columns every 10 floors for stability and wind resistance. The building consisted of hotel and residential units and designing efficient vertical circulation was a major learning in the project.

Travelers Inn at Guanajuato Fall 2017 Studio Project Design Guide : Prof. James P. Warfield
Identifying the character of the UNESCO world heritage site of the city of Guanajuato and reflecting it in the design of the inn while being responsive to the site contours was the main undertaking in this project. The city lies in a valley, flanked by hills around it and the site is located in one of the southern hills, overlooking the heritage area. The views from the site were a decisive factor in orientation of the residential and public units. ADA accessibility played an importan role in the design of the public facilities and 2 residential units as well. The design has been explored at 3 levels, the room to the neigborhood and the whole site to ensure similar character in building, circulation and public areas.

The Site Clustering of units enables the integration of residential and outdoor spaces with multiple plazas formed as part of the circulation. Areas for living, eating and leisure have been spread across the site on 3 main levels, offering a variety of experiences. Public spaces and ADA accessible rooms are placed on the south with road access.

The Neighborhood In the neighborhood, the steps are designed to make the user experience the contours, with the ‘in-between’ plazas as the rest/viewing spots.There is a hierarchy from public to private as the users move closer to their rooms. The stone and stucco walls add color and texture to the site while providing intimate spaces for the users.

The Room Providing views to the city is the main idea behind the room design, with all the spaces - sleeping, living and bathing facing north. Introduction of a small courtyard inside the room helps in bifurcation of functional spaces and provides natural light inside the room. The pool and the jacuzzi offer relaxation areas with a view to the city.

Museum of Origami Spring 2017 Studio Project Design Guide : Prof. Kevin Hinders
The Museum of Origami blends the essence of Origami into the busy streets of Ginza, Tokyo by incorporating the art form into its tectonic creation. The art of Origami touches every person in one way or another - from the simple paper boats for children, to the deployable satellite for the world, Origami is universal. This museum is an attempt to explore the use of Origami in architecture with translating it's forms into steel. Using the form of the hyperbolic paraboloid for a façade gives the museum an image that can be easily associated with origami, thus highlighting the museum’s purpose. The folds of ‘muira-ori’ are incorporated into the exoskeleton of the building by using it as a space frame and in the structure of the building as the folded plate instead of beams for the interior structure. The circulation of the museum incorporates origami into its design, with a folded stair and transformative lift tower. Using ferro -shape memory allows the transformational aspect of the building to be possible. The museum aims at exploring the materiality of steel by translating origami into built forms and opening up new avenues for research and design

The Site The site is located in Ginza, a commercial district in Japan and lies close to the Ginza metro station. The entrance of the museum is opens towards the incoming pedestrian traffic from the metro station. The rear of the building faces south and is ideal for solar gain in the winter. The museum aims at exploring the materiality of steel by translating origami into built forms and opening up new avenues for research in terms of design, structure and landscape. The museum would increase civi participation and provide a space for everyone to enjoy art.

A month long charette with Ashwini Rangaraju, Kirti Panwar, Nasrin Hosseini & Shweta Deo Finding Illini was a landscape proposal for the military axis at UIUC celebrating 150 years of the university’s establishment. A pathway was proposed, starting at Gregory and ending at the Bell Tower, allowing everyone on campus to walk through 150 years of the university’s history. The path was divided in 15 sections with each representing an event of significane in the past 150 years.Various achievements of Alumni could be celebrated by dedicating zones to them, eg, the creating of Nylon by a UIUC alum was celebrated by creating hammocks in one zone. On special events, a holographic presentaion across the walk was proposed as an interactive way to celebrate the university’s past.

LATITUDES
Undergraduate design project, 2013
Team project with Ankita Thakur, Ishita Bhatnagar & Gunmeet Grewal UOW : Latitudes (2013) was a competition hosted by University of Westminster, London to design a sustainable neighbourhood in the region you live in. My team and I proceeded with the idea of designing a housing as an eco district in the village of Jandpur, India. A macro to micro approach was followed, from sustainability at individual level, to the whole neighborhood and its surroundings to create a self sustaining community. The physical, social and economical aspects of sustainability were included in the concept. The design includes housing for 6000 people, a school, farmers market, a community kitchen, hydroponic centres and farmland. Vehicular segregation from pedestrian traffic was proposed to develop the streets between the housing units as gardens.

Site sustainability Two focal zones, retail and community, are linked by the common green axis. The water channel intersects the axis while activating the neighbourhood. The parking is located at the ends of the site, with the entire central area being pedestrian. The school situated in the north aims at community development while the waste wate treatment plant and biogas plant in the south will provide water for non potable uses and cooking gas to homes.

Paik’s Residence Professional work with Planners group , 2015 Project Guide :Vikram Malik
The design of the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Paik on their 250 sqm site in Mohali involved dealing with city building codes, functional flexibility and ease of use.The clients were a retired couple, planning on living in the ground floor of the residence while the above 2 floor were meant for their children who visited them quite often. They wanted the design to allow for renting of the two apartments above as per their will while maintaining their privacy. The design, along with satisfying the clients also takes care of the climatoligical aspects of the region by providing deep balconies and overhangs. The facade was designed according the design codes of the region.

Cooper Deck
Internship project with Steven Tilly Architects Project Guide : Jonathan Walko
The renovation of the outdoor deck for Mr. & Mrs Cooper in Dobbs Ferry, NY, involved documentation of the existing conditions of the residence, preparing drawings for AHRB meeting and proposing structural changes to the existing deck. The design required replanning of the backyard porch, the stairs to the deck and converting the existing 2 level deck into a larger single level space which could be more useful for the family to hold outdoor events.
