The pace of life seems to pick up exponentially in September. Any lull that summer offered is quickly forgotten as work and school routines are reinstated. Combine this with the reality that we’re indoors more, and suddenly it becomes obvious what works in our homes and what doesn’t. At Style at Home, it may seem like we celebrate the flashy aspects of design – the aesthetics, the decorative. And we do! But I always find that when I read the words of our writers, who’ve interviewed the designers of these fabulous spaces, I glean valuable insight into how to design a home that reflects the values of the owners and supports how they live. In this issue, I enjoyed how Olivia Botrie’s design (“Onward & Upward,” page 68) gave an all-in-the-family feel to a wonderfully warm home, which now includes space for visiting grandparents. The sophistication of Marcus Iafrate’s work (“Into the Woods,” page 58) resulted in a modern space with soul – I love how we find out at the end of the article that the construction materials are nontoxic. Our columnist Samantha Pynn helped out her pal Sebastian Clovis, a builder and the host of HGTV Canada’s Gut Job, to save a home with a crumbling foundation (“Ready for Its Close-Up,” page 50). Now the century-old semi has a new lease on life, and the owners can kick back and relax or party dusk-till-dawn – especially in that fab new kitchen. So for me, this is a back-to-school issue, and my teachers are every designer we’ve featured. I applaud their work. I learn so much from them about how to design not just a beautiful space, but a space for living beautifully. veronique.leblanc@tva.ca facebook.com/styleathome @styleathome instagram.com/styleathome

ARREN GETS ARTFUL Designer and Style at Home columnist Arren Williams has just launched a bright new signature collection of lighting, cushions and wall decor in collaboration with Montreal-based Renwil. The new line features bold and stylish motifs in three colourways influenced by 20th-century design high points, from Art Deco to Brutalism. The large-scale wall decor, in particular, makes a strong design statement. “Often people don’t realize what an impact one big piece of art can have on a room,” says Arren, adding that when he designed the collection, he was especially thinking about first-time homeowners who have style but not necessarily a major budget. The entire collection is designed for layering, since the motifs coordinate in colour and pattern across decor accessories, mirrors and artwork. And, says Arren, by 2023, the line will expand to include even more on-trend options, including a chic series of rugs. Congrats, Arren! From $99, renwil.com.

Rachael Taylor Hannah, daughter of respected Toronto architect and designer Dee Dee Taylor Hannah, has shown that a great eye for design runs in the family. She’s just launched TH Curation, a line of locally sourced home goods and capsule collections (condensed versions of full collections still to come) that promotes sustainability while celebrating beautiful design. The line has a decidedly Gen Z focus, ranging from candles to tableware to bed linens and more, and most items are priced to suit a Gen Zer’s style-on-abudget aesthetic. “Sustainability, to me, is about thoughtful consumption, creating a relationship with what you have and reflecting on the story behind each timeless possession by recognizing its worth on a daily basis,” says Rachael. “I want each piece to not only elevate your space, but to tell a story you can share over and over again.”

AR: It is mainly designers who send their drawings. They like [that we’re a] family business and like our reputation. They know that their design will be respected and that the product produced will be of high quality. [We choose the designers based on] their drawings and their personality. It is an exchange, an encounter, a relationship that is created. 3 1 Sebastian Herkner’s Taru LOUNGE SETTEE; 2 Eric Jourdan’s Alando DESK; 3 Constance Frapolli’s Noctambule RUG; 4 Michel Ducaroy’s Togo SOFA; prices on request, ligne-roset.com.
STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 17 STYLE NEWS
S@H: Why do you think the Togo armchair has been so popular? AR: When it came out, it was a big flop. They almost stopped producing it. It was too modern for the time and was not understood. At that time, we saw mostly furniture from grandparents or in the Louis XIV style, while Togo had no structure, no feet. It was a culture shock. It took some time for people to understand and appreciate it. Today, it is a piece that marks Ligne Roset’s DNA, an iconic product that has been sold for 50 years already and is one of the bestselling pieces of furniture of all time. S@H: How do you decide which designers to collaborate with?
1 2
S@H: What are you most proud of in relation to Ligne Roset?
MODERN LOVE For lovers of modern furniture, France-based Ligne Roset is synonymous with innovative, high-quality iconic creations, especially the celebrated Togo chair, which launched in 1973. We caught up with Antoine Roset, marketing director and market coordinator for the Roset Group, at Maison Corbeil in Montreal, and spoke to him about his company’s storied history and its newest offerings.
AR: After more than 160 years, it remains a family business of which we are 100 per cent shareholders. Companies that are manufacturers, producers and distributors are rather rare.
S@H: What is your favourite piece in the new collection and why? AR: I like the roundness and bell bottoms of the Taru Collection by Sebastian Herkner. It is very pretty and well drawn, with perfect proportions.
S@H: What characterizes and unifies this new collection? AR: My uncle, Michel Roset, is our artistic director, and with his 40 years [of experience], he manages to integrate several designs and create homogeneity. This collection is intended to be reassuring, timeless, warm – to fit into the decor in which you want to feel good.
DESSERT OF THE MONTH didknow?you Our ice cream sandwich is a summer twist on Black Forest cake. Originating in Germany, the decadent cake is traditionally made with layers of chocolate sponge cake, cherries and whipped cream. 18 | STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022
Chocolate Cake Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 17-x-12inch baking sheet; line with parchment paper. In bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt. In separate large bowl, whisk together egg, buttermilk, oil and vanilla. Add dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Scrape onto prepared baking sheet, spreading to edges and smoothing top. Bake until cake tester inserted in centre of cake comes out clean, 10 to 12 minutes. Place sheet on rack; let cool completely. Assembly Remove ice cream from freezer and let sit at room temperature to soften, about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, run paring knife along edges of cake to release from baking sheet. Gently unmould cake by lifting parchment paper. Cut crosswise through centre of cake to make 2 halves. Using scissors, cut crosswise through parchment paper at centre. Using large spoon, top one half of the cake with layer of cherry ice cream, about 1-inch thick. Lifting parchment paper by edge, invert second cake half onto ice cream, pressing to adhere. Wrap in plastic wrap; freeze until firm, about 6 hours. (Make ahead: can be frozen for up to 1 month.) Remove plastic wrap, cut into serving-size bars or squares.

Meanwhile, in large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat cream until stiff peaks form. Using spatula, gently fold condensed milk into whipped cream, half at a time, until just combined. Repeat with the remaining cream mixture and cherry compote. Cover and freeze until ice cream is firm, about 6 hours. (Make ahead: can be frozen for up to 2 months.)

e’ve all experienced it – the flop when an unruly, not-so-adjustable desk lamp indecorously plummets desk-ward. It’s all about a perfect balance mechanism. And for that, you need to hit up the real thing: an Anglepoise desk lamp. Designed in 1932 by British engineer George Carwardine, this hardworker has a spring, crank and lever mechanism that’s adjustable with the lightest touch. That first Anglepoise, the Original 1227, is still part of the collection, replete with a ziggurat-weighted base and Carwardine springs in glam brass, but there have been many incarnations since. For us, it’s the sleek midcentury style of the Type 75 by Sir Kenneth Grange (launched in 2006) that hits all the right design buttons. As Anglepoise heads toward its centenary, the brand has been having fun. Collabs with fashion designers Paul Smith and Margaret Howell introduced a playful touch to the Type 75 – Smith’s is multicoloured, while Howell’s makes a splash in juicy, on-trend tones. A recent project with the U.K.’s historic National Trust debuted lamps in soft, muted tints. But if you really want to go big, might we suggest the Brobdingnagian floor lamp version originally commissioned by the Roald Dahl Museum? At more than eight feet tall, it’s sure to shed some light. Back at your desk, adjustable lamp options abound, with style and function battling it out for coveted desktop real estate. USB charger and energy-efficient LED bulb? Sure thing, but beware of too many weird upgrades. (We see you, integral pen holder and Bluetooth speaker!) Sometimes you just want to flip the switch and light the task at hand.

“Initially, I designed this as a homework station strategically located between the kitchen and family room,” says designer Cori Halpern, who included ample desk and storage space for two teenage boys. “I wanted it to look like finely crafted furniture.” Floating shelves offer even more storage and display space. Construction started just prior to the pandemic, explains Cori. “We had no way of knowing that this would become an important, efficient work-from-home space for the next year!”
“We revamped this stately home office with a cowhide rug, comfortable lounge chairs and a statement desk,” says designer Kate Davidson, whose goal was that the room do double duty as a study. The fireplace is a focal point, further emphasized by the artwork above it and the artful accessories on the shelves. Says Kate, “We worked with timeless warm earth tones throughout.”

Don’t compromise on comfort when it comes to working from home. Use these basic ergonomic principles from ergonomist Larissa Fedorowich to ensure your home o ce works for you.
Ensure the lumbar support conforms to the deepest part of the curve of your lower back.
Armrest Height Position the armrests below the height of your elbows when in a seated position, with your arms relaxed. The armrests must not limit the lateral movement of your arms. Ideal Desk Height For computer work, the keyboard and mouse surface should be at elbow height when seated. For the average person, this is usually between 26 and 28 inches from the floor (that’s lower than a typical 29-inch desk, which is why most people need footrests).
The top of the screen should be level with the height of your eyes when seated; if you wear progressive lenses, lower the screen so that you see it through the bottom of the lenses.

STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 33 07 FLEX TIME
How do you know when your body is tired? If your posture sags forward, or you have pain, discomfort, tingling or numbness after a period of working, then you’ve already waited too long to stand up and change your posture. Periodically correct and vary your posture before you feel discomfort. Other indicators may be an increase in typing or work errors, and a decrease in productivity and concentration.

THE RULES
Q&A
What are the signs that your position is bad? Pain, numbness, tingling, body aches, headache, eyestrain, hand cramps. You may notice tightness in the upper shoulders and neck, which is often a sign that the desk/keyboard surface is too high or the screen is not at the correct height. There should be no rubbing or contact between desk edge and wrists. What makes a chair ergonomic? An ergonomic chair can be adjusted to fit and support your body, and it allows you to change your posture throughout the day. Typically, this includes a height-adjustable seat, a height-adjustable supportive lumbar support, adjustable armrests and an angle-adjustable backrest.

What is the ideal posture when working for several hours? Most important is to get up and move periodically and to vary your posture throughout the day; generally, aim for 90 degrees at the hips, elbows and knees, keeping the body well supported.
“This room started as a flex space with a blank back wall,” says designer Athena Stefanopoulos, who transformed it into her own office with tons of storage, work and display space. She even included coat closets, since the house had none.

The Palette
The Starting Line A kitchen reno is an investment. You want to get it right the first time, so don’t swing a hammer until you’ve chosen everything and know where it all will go. Make a list of wants and needs. Ask yourself: How will you use your kitchen? Do you prefer lower drawers or doors? Not sure? Head to a kitchen showroom for a test drive. While there, note how far the appli ances are spaced – what’s comfortable? What’s the best spot for dish and utensil storage for you? Keep in mind that open shelving helps to integrate open-concept spaces by providing a place for display. Finally, consider hiring a designer, who can ensure that you have proper appliance, cabinet drawer and door clearances; ideal sink placement; adequate lighting and electrical outlets; and enough of a counter overhang to sit comfortably if you have an island.

Reduce reno stress and pull together a kitchen you’ll love with Samantha step-by-stepPynn’splan.
Now it’s time to pick the pretty (and practical) stuff. These choices should last awhile, so choose what you love. Start with the floors. Hardwood is durable and brings flow to adjoining rooms (if they’ve got hardwood, too!). Tile, on the other hand, can make a statement but can be hard to stand on for long stretches. Next, choose the cabinetry. Using more than one cabinet colour is big in the design world. If you want colour but don’t want to commit to an entire pink kitchen, opt for an island, as in the kitchen (left) designed for HGTV Canada’s Save My Reno. In smaller spaces, my go-to is dark lowers and creamy-dreamy uppers. For countertops, porcelain slabs that look like natural stone and wrap up the backsplash wall are all the rage. The look is luxe, especially when the slab extends to the ceiling. Plus, porcelain is durable and easy to clean. That said, tile is classic, more forgiving to install, often less expensive per square foot, and is a great way to add colour, pattern and personality to the room while also linking to decorative elements in your living and dining spaces.

Biggest Kitchen Mistakes
The Details Once you’ve made it to the finishing design details – faucet, cabinet hardware, wall colour and light fixtures – you can take a breath. I’m not suggesting to shop for these at the last minute. In fact, it’s best to have the finishing details on-site to show your contractor before you start your reno. But, fortunately, they are changeable. When it comes to choosing the final elements, we’ve heard it a million times, but it bears repeating: don’t sweat mixing metals. Your faucet can be brushed nickel and your hardware antique brass. Mix light fixtures, too – perhaps a flush-mount over the sink and pendants over the island. Lastly, don’t forget to add softness to your kitchen’s hard surfaces with a fabric Roman shade and a floor runner (and remember to include an anti-slip underpad so you can scoot from sink to stove safely).
• Odd hardware placement. Well-placed and properly proportioned hardware will elevate your cabinetry.
• Forgoing a lighting plan. Ambient, task and accent lights are key to creating a great place to cook and hang out.
• Going too fast. Avoid rushing decisions that you’ll regret.
STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 35
• Too few or too many electrical outlets. Include outlets for small appliances and the island; review with the contractor.
• Too many cabinets. Leave room for art or open shelves.

Fresh Take South-facing views from the 65th floor weren’t enough to inject life into this 1,500-square-foot condo in the city’s Harbourfront area. “It was soulless and didn’t make the impression you’d expect, given its sky-high position,” says designer Jeff Wortley, who worked with co-founder Bradley Marks to reinvigorate the space for the young professional who lives here. White paint updated the primer-finished walls, and black punctuated the doors for sharp contrast. Moulding, applied in line with the top of the doorways, factors in subtle architectural detail, while a round mirror adds curvy depth. Custom drapery layers in softness, and a sectional effectively demarcates the living area.

The designers opted for a custom-made banquette in the dining area. “It eliminated the extra space that would have been required for pulling chairs in and out,” says Jeff. Its striking blue hue is a stylish nod to the lake view. “We also wanted the dining room to be multipurpose, so we felt the banquette was an inviting option for working at the table with a laptop or watching TV on the wall across, in the living room.” Just behind, the galley kitchen’s hard surfaces are softened with a sculptural marble table for two, an upholstered chair and a nubby bouclé bench.

Picture This A gallery of art enlivens the long wall connecting the living and dining areas.
“We designed it with a mix of media, including a 3-D wall hanging,” says Bradley. Different framing materials further the lively look. The artwork also serves to nicely connect the two spaces in the open floor plan. “We brought in most of the colour with art, accents and accessories,” he says. “This will allow the owner to refresh the space in the future with minimal updates.”

The banquette seating is augmented with cane-back chairs that are classic yet don’t feel stuffy in this contemporary setting. The designers upholstered the seats with indoor/outdoor faux leather to eliminate the worry of spills and stains.

The airy pendant light was informed by the setting. “It’s an interesting fixture and its shape is a true nod to the clouds just outside the windows,” says Bradley. “It has a dimensional quality, like light bouncing off clouds, and creates an intimate dining experience beneath the 10-foot ceilings.” The pendant’s floaty aspect is tempered by the sculptural presence of the wall sconce; its three discs are attached with magnets and they can be moved to form various compositions.

The guest room had several closets, so the designers converted one into a chic niche that now acts as a combination desk/vanity space. “Prior to this alteration, the room only had space for a bed, so this gives Mom, or any guest, another place to set things down for a special guest suite experience,” says Jeff. The customdesigned spot has access to power, a drawer for storage, and an art ledge.

5-Star Accommodation
The guest room walls are painted in a soft and moody shade that doesn’t go all the way to the ceiling. The paint line is instead aligned with the top of the door frames – it’s a visual trick the designers used to create a cozy feeling beneath the 10-foot ceilings. Here, they furthered it with custom-made linen drapes that mimic the painted walls. The owner’s mom is the most frequent guest here and that inspired a more sophisticated palette. The rich blues reference the nearby lake, and the mirror was added to reflect the spectacular views.
The home o ce doesn’t have any windows, so it was imperative that it feel lively, fresh and fun. A whimsical pink patterned wallpaper and mauve ceiling create that mood and lend an artistic touch that’s played up in framed Matisse cutout prints. The rug also imparts pattern, and its shape is needed among all the lines. Open shelving feels airy and offers pretty display areas, while the credenza conceals the usual assortment of o ce supplies. The bouclé armchair is a feminine touch.

The powder room was in good shape but rather generic looking. To add some oomph, Jeff and Bradley swapped out the standard-issue medicine cabinets for a sleek decorative mirror, and replaced a towel bar with a robe hook. “It looks better than a bar, especially in a small powder room,” says Bradley. KL: You believe spaces should bring us joy. Kitchens are such hardworking rooms. How do you achieve joy and harmony in such a space? AM: Our homes should reflect our passions, and when I design, I always start with the kitchen and move out from there. I believe that the kitchen is the most important room in the house. Instead of drawing inspiration from kitchen trends directly, I always find out what is unique to each client and that guides me in designing a space for them that brings happiness to their day-to-day life in the space. If a client tells me their favourite place in the world is Paris, for example, I take inspiration Intense White quartz Zellige BACKSPLASH TILE in Weathered White, Clé Tile. COUNTERTOP, Caesarstone. COOKTOP, Bosch. Custom Lineal wood CABINETRY PULLS, Auburn Woodturning. from that city, and it gives me a way to have fun while designing the space. In my own home, my partner, Don, is such a foodie and he loves a clean and minimal look, while I crave a warm and interesting vibe. We’ve blended our styles and we adore what we’ve created. KL: When designing a kitchen, what comes first for you in your process: the overall style, the layout or the function? AM: I create the layout at the same time as I pull the inspiration images, as they strongly impact each other and the process goes hand in hand. For example, if I come across an inspiration image of an arch that I would like to use, I’ll find the natural place to add it that transitions to the next room, and then that will be added to the floor plan. The inspiration phase is so important. I love watching the clients’ faces when we present the initial floor plan and curated collection of images to inspire the possibilities. Once we get all of their feedback, the next design meeting is our biggie. We present all the elevations and our favourite materials and take the clients through a highly visual tour of their newly designed space.

KL: What are some ways to integrate the kitchen into an open-concept floor plan, or to make it a more multifunctional space? AM: Booths are a great way to make a kitchen more fun while also adding colour and texture to the room. They create a nice intimate area to dine in and can also function well as a cozy homework space for kids, or as a home office or family gathering space. In one kitchen we
created, we installed a floor-to-ceiling glass wall directly adjacent to the kitchen and at the front of a playroom. That way, Mom could be in the kitchen, yet watch her children while they were playing. The plan was that in future years, it could be transitioned into a home office.

NICOLAYJANISPHOTOGRAPHY,
KL: Do you have a number 1 design element that you implement in many of the kitchens you design?
AM: Use layers of textural materials to give personality and character. I start with the tile and countertop colours, then build the colour story from there. If the tile is patterned and eye catching, balance it by using the right hues and textures in other elements to ensure the look of the space is cohesive. I’ve started using colour fearlessly – it has a remarkable impact on mood and adds a lot to a neutral or plain room. Every kitchen I design has a mix of contemporary and natural accessories, including handmade and artisan pieces. The finishing touch is nature – using oversized branches, plants and flowers.
- “When designing a kitchen, the visual math is so important. There’s a balance between where to add striking visual impact and where to pull back and add subtlety.”
AM: I’ve been seeing beautiful natural coloured stone. It makes my heart happy to see something from the earth that has a high visual impact and is one of a kind being celebrated. Natural stone is timeless, and it’s wonderful to create a kitchen with that element as inspiration. In my own home, I have a poured concrete island that is very sculptural and there are no stools. Instead of the predictable combination of a square or rectangular island with stools, I am more focused on making the island into art, while featuring interesting shapes with curved ends, half-circles or cantilevered ends. We can have fun with islands and make them exquisite – when you walk into the room, you’ll see it more as art or a sculptural piece. I also look forward to playing with a lot more colour in the kitchen and using coloured grout.

AM: Our kitchens tend to feature remarkable, custom-made hood fans. We add texture, depth and colour with interesting material choices, and use exaggerated proportions. This creates a beautiful focal point in each kitchen. And regardless of the style of kitchen – whether it be a cabin, a contemporary new home or a traditional renovation – I always add organic material and warmth. For instance, adding wood pulls to a painted kitchen adds an unexpected natural twist. The golden thread tying all of our project styles together is warm contemporary design.
KL: What are some ways to give big-time style and personality to a plain or visually boring kitchen?
46 | STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 DECORATING SO SMART!Lighting, security, appliances and more: here’s our rundown on the latest innovations in tech for the home. TEXT CHANTAL LAPOINTE
The Bots Are Coming Compact and autonomous, the new smart vacuum cleaners (Samsung, Ecovacs, iRobot) are ushering in a mini revolution in household maintenance. New laser simultaneous localization and mapping algorithms help it map the space of the house, including how to navigate around obstacles for optimum e ciency. Although quieter than their predecessors, it’s still wise to program them to clean while you’re away from home because they are still noisy. The T10, a recent robot from Narwal, is both a vacuum and a mop, and it knows when its job is done by detecting how much dirt is on the device and returning to the base by itself.
The kitchen of the future, where appliances even cook our meals, is – alas – not quite here! Nevertheless, smarter devices are on the horizon and some have already arrived. Who wouldn’t want a fridge equipped with a camera so you can see if you’re out of milk from the grocery store? We also like the connected oven, like the ones by Miele, which adapts its cooking method, time and temperature to what you’re preparing. As well, it offers direct connection to the manufacturer for troubleshooting when something goes awry.
Two more innovative devices that have caught our eye are Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator with a built-in calendar on the door that all family members can interact with remotely, and the LG WashTower High E ciency dryer that automatically selects a compatible drying cycle.
STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 47
After a timid breakthrough, technologies controlled remotely from our smart devices are garnering renewed interest. That’s partly due to increased affordability and better compatibility with other devices, but it’s also in response to our desire for energy efficiency and for greater customization of our home environment. Best of all, the newest products are user friendly. If you can use a smartphone or say “dim the lights,” you’ve got this. Here’s what’s new and improved on the market.
Kitchen Automation
The SwitchBot Bot is a little device that you a x to your not-so-smart devices, like your push-button coffee maker. When you activate the SwitchBot Bot remotely via your voice assistant or other smart device, such as your tablet, a little lever moves on the bot, which is attached to your old-fashioned machine, and pushes the button – making your old-school items act like smart appliances. The SwitchBot family includes many techy gadgets that improve compatibility between devices.
Home Safe Home security remains a main attraction of smart accessories. You can see who is ringing the doorbell, turn on the security lights or monitor the surroundings of the swimming pool by video camera. The drawback: some of these same devices can be hacked, so choose carefully. Opt for companies that offer reliable smart home accessories with a cybersecurity service that meets the standards required by the industry – do your homework to get the product that’s right for you.
Touch of a Button
Bright Ideas Smart bulbs are the easiest way to bring “smart” home. These Internetenabled bulbs can be controlled (off/ on, dimming, even changing colour) remotely. The Philips Hue creates lighting moods for different times of the day, so you can program your bedroom light to simulate the colours of a sunrise, for instance. It’s easy to imagine a range of situations at multiple times of the day where smart lighting could be useful.

Its ReadyClose-Upfor An earthy palette, modern furnishings and a sharp two-tone kitchen dazzle in a century home featured on HGTV Canada’s Gut Job TEXT IRIS BENAROIA PHOTOGRAPHY VIRGINIA MACDONALD
STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 51 DECORATING hen the owners of this century semi snapped up their digs in Toronto’s east end, there was a motherlode of mishaps: the foundation was crumbling, the floors sloped, and the main floor was gloomy because of a choppy layout (and that’s just for starters). The couple yearned for a bright and inviting dwelling to live and entertain in. Enter builder Sebastian Clovis, host of HGTV Canada’s Gut Job, who recruited his friend, designer and Style at Home columnist Samantha Pynn, to help lift the 1,200-square-foot house out of its funk – a major ordeal. “At one point, the house was totally open to the sky,” says Samantha. After Sebastian fixed the big-envelope issues, Samantha focused on the aesthetics. She deployed a nature-inspired palette that includes greens (the colour of the year), camels and blues. At the rear of the house, the pièce de résistance hardworking kitchen beguiles, and a giant bifold door opens onto a new deck. “Now it’s the perfect spot to cook and have cocktails with friends,” says Samantha. They’re composed entirely out of narrow upper cabinetry: the lowers are 15 inches deep, and the uppers, 13 inches. “The drapery also makes the kitchen feel like a living space and offers privacy,” says Samantha.

September is a month ripe with possibilities. On the cusp between summer and fall, it’s a time of increased activity and new routines. Even the natural world is animated by change. The leaves are still green, but the night breezes blow more briskly. It’s time to ready our homes for the colder months. Make texture your friend. Over-winter tropical plants inside. And in all the busyness of the everyday, notice beauty indoors and out.

A combination of warm wood and white elements sets an inviting tone in the sunken foyer. The towering custom closet provides much-needed storage.

Underfoot, grey tile is both durable and stylish. The play of natural light on the lines of the exposed wooden staircase creates a sculptural effect.
“From the exterior, it is quite contemporary,” says Marcus, who was involved in the project from the ground up. “We wanted to add a bit of culture to the interior. To do that, we introduced a mix of new and vintagesourced pieces, with a heavy nod to the midcentury, to create an eclectic and cozy space for our client.”
ontemporary homes can feel cool – and not necessarily in a good way. The tendency to strictly match everything, from wood finishes to the style of furniture, often results in a toosleek snooze of a space. But that’s not Marcus Iafrate’s jam.

Clean Lines
Light Touch Designer Marcus Iafrate wanted the dining room, which is sparsely styled with a beautiful walnut table, to be super simple in contrast with “the eclectic clutter” in the living room. “Sconces add interest to the walls without the need for large art. The focal point is the massive front window that lets in so much light,” he says. Snoopie awaits happy hour by the bar cart.
Located in a leafy midtown Toronto neighbourhood, the 2,400-square-foot house –with its flat roof and black metal canopy over the door – suggests a sober sophistication.
The principal designer and founder of Conik Studios likes to shake things up. He brought personality and “a collected-over-time feel,” as he describes it, to a recently built home.
Knockout Style

“We wanted the island to be a heavyweight in the centre of the home. The spectacular Quarzo Bianco slab made this such a dream,” says Marcus. Pure white Caesarstone on the perimeter and backsplash complements the stone. Benjamin Moore’s Duxbury Gray, with its trace of soft green, adds character and life to the cabinetry.
The homeowner is a busy professional with three children and a friendly Frenchie named Snoopie – the latter was reportedly happy with whatever style direction they went with, as long as her dinner bowl was easily accessible. The open layout is such that the dining and living rooms are sandwiched on either end of the main floor, with the kitchen flowing from the centre. And throughout, dynamic contrast is in play: white oak floors and light wood millwork comingle with the darker tones found in the walnut dining table, teak Danish wall unit and chess table-and-stool set. The house is all about balance. “It’s important to get a calculated eclectic mix of things,” says Marcus, but not too much or it would be overkill.
Hiding Places Spot the fridge! It’s hidden behind panelled doors beside the steam oven – a smart solution that helps create tranquil sightlines in the open-concept home. Similarly seamless, the metal hood vent transitions elegantly into the cabinetry. In the nearby powder room (right), Marcus used the same stunning quartzite for the vanity for visual flow.

“We played with weight and airiness,” says Marcus. The dining room, which is off the entrance, is deliberately sparse; this contrasts the rear living room, with its gallery wall and vintage styling, which is relaxed to the max. “Even in the artwork, there are sketches and photographs: we played with every element, not just the woods,” says the designer. “This helps make the space not matchy-matchy. It creates a story.”
The climax of this story is most definitely the kitchen. “The kitchen is the focal point of the house,” says Marcus. Serene and elegant, there’s not an excessive bell or whistle. The island, a quartzite behemoth, is like sculpture in the space. A grid of flat-panel green cabinetry neatly meets the ceiling, its fresh hue providing an unexpected upgrade to predictable white cabinets. To link to the upstairs rooms, the designer carried green to the primary bedroom’s ensuite, where oceanic tile beautifully cloaks the shower.

“Our homeowner loves vintage furniture. The R. Huber Scoop chairs and sofa were reupholstered in the stunning silver colour, which gave them a whole new life.”
Art, Form Relaxed styling infuses the house with warmth. Coveted and classic R. Huber Scoop chairs have a distinctive form with their deep seats designed for chilling, while the gallery wall reinforces the room’s casual vibe. “It was a labour of love,” says Marcus of the art wall, which features work the homeowner has collected over the years and a few pieces from the designer tucked into the mix. “Our favourites are the John Lennon print of the man under the tree, and the three line art Picassos,” says Marcus.
WALL UNIT, Vintage Home Boutique.
A teak Danish wall unit brings soulful character to the second-floor o ce. Earthy-toned accessories and books have a nostalgic pull. Marcus (shown above) infused this modern home with layered luxury and warmth.
A chess set beside the chic glass banister makes for an idiosyncratic moment at the staircase. “The client found the chess set and we said, ‘Yes, let’s use it,’” enthuses Marcus. The contrast of light and dark woods is a well-orchestrated balance seen throughout the home.
In Working Order
CHESS VIGNETTE, MegaChess. But the homeowner’s biggest wish is, in fact, invisible to the eye. “Our client was firm on wanting to use nontoxic materials during the construction and finishing of her home,” says Marcus. The house is healthy from top to bottom: from the Rockwool insulation to the NAUF MDF millwork (a sustainable material that doesn’t off-gas), and from nontoxic adhesives to zero-VOC paints and sealants. To limit exposure to radiation, the digs are Wi-Fi-free. Instead, TVs and computers are hardwired via hidden ethernet cables. Whether behind the scenes or in full view, one thing is clear: this cleanlined home is a contemporary dream with built-in warmth and beauty.

Nature Nurtures
All bedrooms should have a sitting area – especially with a backdrop like this. Sublime nature spills into the restful space, where fun Sherpa chairs are cozy counterpoints to the abundance of wood. The rich tones in the four-poster bed and matching nightstand contrast the light oak floors.

Swirls of green tile add richness and warmth to the bathroom (opposite) and connect chromatically to the kitchen downstairs. Above the vanity, the mirror features an integrated vanishing smart TV (it’s off at the moment). The homeowner can relax in her tub and watch her favourite show!

Taking its cues from the best hotels, the open bathroom is separated from the primary bedroom by glass walls. “The focal point is the emerald marble tile from Cercan that ties in with the green tones seen throughout the home,” says Marcus. “Always include at least one chair that faces something other than the TV.”
GATHERING PLACE “I am anti-TV over the fireplace,” says Olivia, meaning that a choice would be necessary. Which would it be? “Since the family room is where most of life unfolds, we put the TV here,” she says. No matter: warmth permeates the space thanks to a dark oak panel behind the TV, and a modern display shelf above. For reading and relaxing, there’s an inviting leather armchair.
G raciously situated on the west side of Toronto, this house had long been lovely. But once their daughter was born, the homeowners discovered that the compact layout of the heritage bungalow no longer worked. “For example, the only way to get to the backyard was through the bedrooms at the back,” says designer Olivia Botrie. “So, if their daughter was playing in the backyard, they couldn’t see her.” Olivia solved this problem (and many more) by adding two more storeys to the house and expanding the back. The former bedrooms are now a wide open, window-banked family room, kitchen and dining area, offering views aplenty of their daughter at play, and the new upper levels offer stylish sleeping quarters for all. “This project was a big undertaking, and through it all, the homeowners were absolutely amazing. My favourite moment was when they said to me, ‘Look, Olivia, we just don’t have good taste!’” They let her lead the way in all design decisions, from the layout to the palette. “They offered such an exceptional level of trust,” says Olivia. “In return, I tried to create a home that would truly honour their needs as a family.”

ISLAND LIVING
The star of the L-shaped open kitchen is an eight-foot island. Its strong profile is punctuated with a rustic range hood and dark metal pendants. Leather straps on the pendants match the parade of leather-look counter stools. “They’re actually vinyl, which is perfect for kids because they wipe down so easily. They also have sturdy frames and swivel, so little ones can safely hop on and off,” says Olivia.

ALL IN THE DETAILS
A gracious expanse of oak veneer millwork defines the kitchen. Olivia contrasted the wood with deep-toned details, such as black sconces, burnished shelf brackets, and metal frames on the glassfronted upper cabinets. The stack of three shelves (above) displays a mortar-and-pestle collection and oft-used cookbooks. The end of the island has a reeded finish –a nod to the reeded glass in the upper cabinetry.
“Nobody loves a backless counter stool. Choose stools that let you lean back and stay awhile.”
“I’m a big believer in creating distinct spaces even in homes that are open concept.”
“An easy way to define a space is with texture. This wall art [shown right] is comprised of heavy cord but reads like an encaustic painting,” says Olivia.

PERFECTLY ALIGNED Olivia wanted the dining space to be visually separate from the adjacent kitchen and family room areas, so she hung a wall mural. Its freehand lines provide a carefree counterpoint to the more linear chandelier. “Since the family eats here daily, the table and chairs had to be easy care. When guests are over, the chenille-style armchairs add a touch of formality and can be pulled across to the family room for extra seating,” says Olivia.
Whether for a special occasion or a weekend meal, a fine vintage is always easy to retrieve from the wine cellar.
“We wanted something special for the powder room on the main floor,” says Olivia. She’s referring to the rich teal wall tile and the warm walnut vanity with its organic texture. The mirror adds a slimline midcentury touch to the timeless space.

“In the principal bedroom, we went with drapes in a bold floral stripe. It’s strong and beautiful at the same time,” says Olivia. The upholstered headboard accounts for the room’s reputation as a bedtime reading destination. “I chose the wall sconces because the ceramic shades cast such soft light.” The bench and bedside tables are wood, which was selected, here as elsewhere, for its approachability and warmth.
GO TO PRINT
“The goal for the principal bathroom was low-maintenance luxury,” Olivia says. “Large-scale porcelain wall tiles with marble-style veining wipe down easily, and wall-mounted fixtures make for quicker cleanup.” The soaking tub sits atop hex-style mosaic floor tiles. Says Olivia: “They’re textured, so they feel wonderful underfoot.”

HOMES
The owners of the 4,500-square-foot abode – a 1920s, Tudor-style home in the city’s Westmount neighbourhood – agreed. As recent empty nesters, they purchased the home as a lively alternative to a condo but knew it needed invigorating. They enlisted Luke and gave him full design control. “I wanted a major refresh with a bit of old-meets-new edge,” he says. Tweaking floor plans and layering in a riveting mix of art, colour and fabric morphed his vision into reality. He says, “It still feels like an elegant, old home, but now it’s got some pep.”

Energy Sources Mix-master patterns, tactile finishes and punchy colours shift the once-bland dining room into overdrive. The walls are finished with faux shagreen wallpaper, and exude a textured energy that’s furthered by the ombré-striped custom rug and dappled asymmetry of the hand-blown glass pendant lights. The angular sconces offer a neat contrast. Custom-made club chairs lend a comfy lounge feel, and the collection of mirrors imparts interest without detracting from the whimsical artwork.

“I think the living room is formal but welcoming,” says Luke. “The owners wanted comfortable yet structured furniture that works just as well for hosting a cocktail party as it does for wearing PJs and watching TV.” With that in mind, Luke custom-designed the sectional with a slight curve. “It’s more of a boomerang shape. No one said sectionals always have to be 90 degrees.” New custom millwork showcases mementoes and books, which are played up as colourful spines in the pop art over the fireplace. “This is a very cohesive home with great flow and personality. Next Level Luke replaced cabinets over the sink with chic open shelving that repeats the beautiful stone of the island. “This is like a true Europeandesigned kitchen in the way it incorporates adequate floor-to-ceiling storage throughout; that allowed me to nix the upper cupboards and keep the look open,” he says. The new shelves also offer a place to display pretty items and plants, and their black framing has that modern edge Luke was after.
Revamped Style
Although the kitchen had previously been renovated with high-end Bulthaup finishes, it felt flat to Luke. To give it some personality, he topped the existing island with Arabescado marble in a waterfall application. “The kitchen, as it was, did a good job of balancing the warm wood tones with the cool grey ones, so I wanted to elevate that with some dramatic veined stone that felt organic,” says Luke. Swivel leather stools in a neutral shade bridge the warm-cool gap, while custommade navy tweed chairs introduce colour and more texture. The airy pendant light echoes the shape of the range hood.
“The kitchen needed invigorating. First thing to go: dorky upper cabinets that looked like overhead bins on an airplane.”
The powder room (below right) features imaginative wallpaper with a softly veined look that’s in sync with the marble in the nearby kitchen. To keep the pattern a focal point, Luke opted for a sink and toilet in a rich tone that’s less stark than white. He hung the mirror to conceal a strangely placed window. “It sounds counterintuitive to block a window, but it detracted from the space and the mirror is slightly angled [away from the wall], so natural light still comes through as backlighting.”

Luke wanted the primary bedroom to feel both airy and cozy. “My inspiration was a luxury hotel suite, and I custom-designed all of the furniture (save the bench) to be a mix of straight lines and curves – a composition that gives the room a sort of sculptural appeal.”
Palette update: warm colours, such as russet, chocolate and blush, feel contemporary and knock the bold edge off the black bed and lamps. Plush carpeting fortifies the cozy mandate.
“The principal bedroom had fallen into a pre-millennial yellow and raspberry patch and was begging for a makeover.”
Restful Retreat
The bedroom is a master class in lighting. New and practical cove lighting around the room is augmented by an interesting mix of styles. “There are sconces, lamps and a pendant,” says Luke. “They’re all shaded to give off a warm, diffused light, and their sculptural and geometric design plays off the other shapes and forms in the room.” The curvy sofa beneath original leaded windows is a nice place to curl up with a book. Luke’s dog, Yogi (pictured here), likes it too.

Fine Finishes
“This is real terrazzo tile with a clay-coloured background and chunks of white marble,” says Luke. “The owners weren’t totally sold on it for their ensuite, but they came around to the idea and love the results.” He ended the wall tiles below the ceiling to balance their pattern with some soft white space above. Oval mirrors and sconces echo the shape of the tub and their placement draws the eye upward. The primary bedroom’s original closets had a dated cherrywood finish and didn’t provide enough storage to suit the owners’ needs. Luke augmented these with a new bank of store-bought cabinets and painted all of them a rich shade of green. “This was a very practical solution and the unifying colour makes it look like a very chic walk-in closet,” he says. He also added in a small table with drawers that holds makeup and gives the space a custom dressing room feel.

The attic guest room was used by the owners’ daughter before she left the nest, so Luke incorporated pieces of Chanel-inspired artwork from her old room to personalize the space. A brass-trimmed oval mirror introduces some curves to the angular attic, and the playful shape continues in the pendant light. “It’s a reproduction of a midcentury piece and it has these fun discs of glass that diffuse the light,” says Luke. “The compact shape allows it to be hung in a room without particularly high ceilings.” The pendant’s brass is picked up in the bedside tables, while the mix of textured linen bedding, soft upholstery and plush carpeting plays up the cozy vibe.

WFH Chic Luke created a dramatic backdrop for the home o ce/den. “Everyone is on video calls now and can see your o ce, so I wanted to create one that was unexpected and interesting,” he says. “Dark colours usually yield amazing results and they really can be just as easy to live with as light or white shades, so go bold!” The moody hue also makes the art, an original Damien Hirst piece, more vibrant.

The amount of time spent working from home also informed Luke’s furniture choices. “No hard o ce chairs here!” he says. “Everything had to be very comfortable, as this is also the den, but I wanted to introduce some clean lines and tailoring that are in keeping with a workspace.” A crimson chair continues the gutsy palette of the walls, and the mix of furniture styles feels edgy. Luke chose the ceiling light, a reproduction midcentury piece, as a high contrast to the walls. Little touches, like fresh flowers and patterned accessories, complete the look.

BROCCOLINI CAESAR SALAD SERVES 4 ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 oil-packed anchovy fillets, finely chopped ⅓ cup finely grated Parmesan + extra to serve 1 clove garlic, finely grated 1 (15 oz/150 g) piece stale rye bread, thinly sliced 3 bunches broccolini (about 1 lb/500 g), stems thinly sliced on an angle, florets cut into 2-cm pieces 2 eggs 4 tsp white wine vinegar Lemon-Mayo Drizzle Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp whole-egg mayonnaise ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the anchovies, Parmesan and garlic and stir until fragrant. Pop the rye slices into the pan and cook, stirring regularly, until the bread is golden and crispy, about 5 minutes. Set the pan aside. Meanwhile, bring a saucepan of well-salted water to the boil. Prepare a bowl of ice water for blanching. Drop the broccolini florets into the boiling water for 1 minute, then add the chopped bits and cook until vivid green, about 1 more minute. Scoop out with a slotted spoon and drop into the ice water to set the colour. Drain, then add to the reserved frying pan and toss to coat in all the crumbly bits. Bring the saucepan back to the boil; meanwhile, working with 1 egg at a time, crack the egg into a small bowl with 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Gently slide the eggs (and the vinegar) into the boiling water from as close to the pan as possible, then reduce the temperature and simmer until the whites have set, about 2 minutes. Scoop the eggs out with a slotted spoon, discard gunky white bits; drain briefly on paper towel. Pile the broccolini mixture onto a large platter; arrange the rye toasts on the side. Top the broccolini with the poached eggs. Combine the dressing ingredients in a small bowl, spoon over the salad, sprinkle with extra Parmesan and serve.

Add to a saucepan along with the milk. Place
TIP You’ll find that the richer and creamier your milk is, the better flavour and texture your ricotta will have. Since you’re going to the effort of making it, seek out the best-quality milk you can find. For more delicious recipes, see In Praise of Veg by Alice Zaslavsky, Penguin Random House Canada, $35.
FENNEL & TOMATO PANZANELLA WITH HOMEMADE RICOTTA over medium heat and bring to the boil. Stir in the lemon juice, then as soon as you see the mixture begin to split, remove from the heat and set aside for 30 minutes to curdle. Line a sieve or colander with cheesecloth or a clean cloth. Strain the mixture through the sieve to separate the curds from the whey. Reserve the whey for your next batch of pancakes or vegetable soup. Place a sieve over a large bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour to drain and cool completely. Meanwhile, cut the fennel bulb in half lengthwise, then use a mandoline to thinly slice the fennel halves on the cut side. Place in a bowl of ice water. Toss the onion, tomatoes and vinegar in a bowl. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add the bread chunks and cook, stirring, until golden, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the shallot flakes and the caraway, sesame and nigella seeds, and cook until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. To serve, drain the fennel and toss with the tomato mixture. Arrange on a platter and crumble the ricotta overtop. Sprinkle with the crispy spiced bread mixture, fennel fronds and basil (if using), and then finish with a final drizzle of olive oil.
COCONUT TAPIOCA WITH LEMONGRASS CURD & FRESH MANGO SERVES 4
STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 95 FOOD COCONUT TAPIOCA WITH LEMONGRASS CURD & FRESH MANGO
Lemongrass Curd 3 stems lemongrass, white part roughly chopped Finely grated zest of 3 limes (preferably makrut, if available) ½ cup lime juice ½ cup granulated sugar 3 egg yolks + 1 whole egg 3 oz (80 g) butter, diced, at room temperature Coconut Tapioca For the tapioca, bring 12 cups of water to the boil in a saucepan. Pop in the tapioca pearls and bruised green lemongrass stems and simmer, stirring occasionally, over medium-low heat until soft and only slightly opaque through the centre, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain the tapioca through a fine-mesh sieve; discard the lemongrass; rinse with cold water. In a bowl, combine the coconut cream, salt and sugar (if using). Stir in the tapioca. Chill until thickened slightly, about 1 hour. Lemongrass Curd For the curd, place the chopped lemongrass in a heavy-bottom saucepan with the lime zest, lime juice and sugar. Bring to just before the boil, then remove from the heat and let stand for 20 minutes to infuse. Strain through a finemesh sieve and return to the saucepan. Add the egg yolks and whole egg, then whisk until creamy yellow in colour. Switch to a flexible spatula and stir continuously for 7 to 8 minutes as the mixture thickens to a custardy consistency, coating the back of a spoon; if you run a finger through it, the streak should stay put. Pour the eggy mixture into a blender or food processor and let cool for 5 minutes or so. Start the motor, then add the butter cubes, a few at a time, continuing to blend on a low speed until incorporated and smooth. Strain the curd into a bowl if using it all; cover directly with a layer of parchment paper to stop it from developing a film, and chill for at least 1 hour to cool completely. (Alternatively, strain into sterilized jars and refrigerate until needed; the curd will last unopened for up to 3 months, or 1 to 2 weeks once you crack in.)
To serve, divide the curd among 4 glasses. Top with the tapioca, then the mango, and garnish with the julienned lime zest. Organized by colour, the recipes in Alice Zaslavsky’s new book will open your eyes to the unlimited possibilities of vegetable-based fare.
Diced mango or other fresh fruit, to serve Julienned lime zest, to garnish Coconut Tapioca 5 oz (150 g) dried white tapioca pearls 3 stems green lemongrass, bruised 1 (14 oz/400 ml) can coconut cream ¼ tsp salt 1 tbsp granulated sugar (optional, particularly if using a sweeter coconut cream)

These days, since kitchens are open to other living areas in the home, camouflaging large appliances like fridges and dishwashers is getting more sophisticated. Custom cabinetry panels are still an option when you want your appliance to blend in, but if personality is what you’re after, now you can turn your appliance into a style statement with bespoke options, such as coloured panel doors. Kitchen Reno Want a dream kitchen but are afraid the reno will be a nightmare? Our guide will help you plan every step so you can sleep a little easier!
Kitchen renos aren’t for the faint of heart. Costs are high, supply chain issues can mean waits are long, and the choices can be overwhelming. Pre-reno planning is paramount to avoid costly mistakes and ensure you build the kitchen of your dreams. How do I set the stage for a successful reno? First, identify your exact needs. Do you need more room to cook? Additional storage? Better lighting? Make a detailed list of what’s not working, then craft a list of potential fixes and prioritize them. This helps you define the scope of your project – is it a revamp or a total transformation? Then you’ll be able to identify which experts you’ll need to get the job done, as well as estimate how long the project will take. If possible, avoid scheduling a reno when you or your family are particularly busy. TIP Ensure whichever contractors and trades you hire have a licence, and that every business you’ll be working with is well established and has solid reviews. Also, research materials: know the pros and cons before you put any money down. How do I know whether to hire a designer, architect, engineer, contractor or project manager? If you haven’t quite put your finger on what style you want, hire a designer. Designer perk: they usually come with a network of trusted professionals. Kitchen designers, in particular, are cabinetry experts. They’ll maximize storage and countertop space, solve tricky ergonomic challenges, and know the trends in materials and accessories. For large-scale renovations that include additions and knocking down walls, you need an engineer or an architect; they’ll also be able to prepare and sign off on drawings required for building

STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 107 ADVICE permits. Finally, a project manager or contractor is helpful for taking charge, coordinating labour and ensuring everything is done to your liking. How much lead time do I need? For bigger jobs, you’ll need anywhere from six months to a year to get your blueprints drafted, permits sorted and contractors booked. If you’re simply switching up your cabinetry sans custom manufacturing, give yourself around two to three months. When do I switch out the appliances and install a gas line? If your appliances are built-in or more than 15 years old, shop for new ones at the planning stage so that the cabinetry plan accommodates them. A standard dishwasher is 24 inches wide; a stove or built-in oven is 30 inches wide; a fridge can range from 29 to 48 inches wide (note that fridge depths also vary). Keep in mind that adding a new appliance (wine fridge, steam oven, etc.) may require an additional electrical outlet.
Designer Details
The kind of cooking technology you opt for will also impact your reno – some cooktops require specialized range hoods and must be located against a wall, as opposed to on an Consideringisland.switching to gas? Check local building codes, as it’s not legal across all municipalities.
Do I need to let my insurer know before I get started? Technically, yes, but very few insurers seem concerned. Ensure that your contractor is covered if an accident occurs on your property. If you are hiring trades, be sure they have active policies. How do I calculate my budget? To avoid disappointment midway through your reno, get estimates for costs in advance. Make it a more manageable task by breaking the project down into subheadings (blueprints, cabinets, labour, materials, lighting, appliances, etc.). Generally, a kitchen reno with appliances will range from $15,000 to $30,000 for smaller budgets; $30,000 to $70,000 for medium budgets; and can go beyond $100,000 for high-end everything. TIP Plan to spend 10 per cent of your home’s overall value.
No matter what your project timeline is, it’s important that your contracted payment schedule is not date bound but is instead based on phase completion: X-amount when Step A has been completed; Y-amount when Step B has been completed, and so on.

These tips will ensure your kitchen reno is smooth sailing. The Right Stuff Select materials that match your lifestyle. Fine wood veneers and marble countertops are fabulous for a couple, but less so for a young family with pets. Orderly Ways Organize your new kitchen around areas of activity – cooking, cleanup, breakfast dining – and keep an eye on clearances for good flow. For instance, can you open the cutlery drawer and the dishwasher door at the same time?

The finishing touches are crucial, too. Things like perfectly centred pendant lighting and well-proportioned tile joints get noticed.

A 36-inch Sub-Zero fridge disappears behind black cabinetry that’s “reminiscent of a traditional apothecary,” says designer Jack Creasy. Beside the black armoire-like fridge is a wall pantry. Meanwhile, the 24 old-timey square drawers, with dashing black-and-brass pulls, conceal deep drawers for snacks. To the left, the hutch opens to reveal a microwave and coffee station. Grey and black invites contrast and elevated intrigue, as do dark brown herringbone floors.

There was nothing to bring you joy before.” To pay homage to the vintage of the house, Jack opted for classical English cabinetry. “It’s furniture fitted for a kitchen,” he says of the cabinets by Bloomsbury Fine Cabinetry, a company known for their handmade English-framed cabinetry. Then Jack layered in luxurious elements: brass, marble and apothecary detailing, and that fetching purple island, resulting in a timeless space with a touch of sass.

The metal mesh wall pantry “breaks up all the cabinetry,” says Jack. The homeowners’ good china is tucked behind the brass doors. The solid door (to the left of the mesh doors; opposite page, bottom) cleverly conceals a plumbing pipe. The hand-forged range hood is a showstopper with its beautiful patina. It combines aged zinc with a satin brass band and rivets. “It ties in with the screw-rivet detail on the pendants,” says Jack.
The island is lashed in a lulling shade of aubergine. “People yearn for more than a grey and white room,” says the designer. “I do love colour!” Jack’s signature move is to incorporate bold hues into his projects. This kitchen’s palette was inspired by a painting in the dining room (just visible through the doorway, above).

Designer Damon Fox, owner of Toronto’s Devix Kitchens, credits his client – an artist who lives in the newly renovated house with her husband and daughter – for the concept. “She wanted it to look like a high-end English bar, complete with wood and metal cabinets,” says Damon. “I brought that idea to life.” Working over six months, Damon created a room that’s rousingly layered with fun flourishes like mesh-metal steel doors and a royal blue fridge. A confluence of materials, including marble, chrome, walnut and a shimmery stone backsplash, deepens the richly layered space, making this kitchen a chic spot for morning coffee or evening aperitifs.

The unique two-tone wall pantry is framed in walnut with glitzy metal doors (right). Using glass ensures that the homeowner’s collection of dishware is in full view. A wheel turns on the spigot-like faucet – very steampunk! It looks like it’s been lifted from a British pub. Cheers to that.
The homeowner found the dramatic fridge (page 114). “Those are actual blue-painted doors,” says Damon, who colour-matched the cabinets above the appliance so both are a seamless unit visually. t a certain point, you’ve just got to face it if your kitchen isn’t working. That’s what happened for this cook-together, laugh-together family of five in Whitby, Ont. “Most days, they wanted to cook and eat at home,” says designer Orsi Panos.
After 20 years, a family kitchen is renovated for making fine food and fun times.
But the kitchen was so cramped and dark, plus it was cut off from the rest of the home. Orsi took the reins, removing walls to meld happy times in the family room with fun cooking adventures in the kitchen. A sensational 10-plus-foot island is handy for rolling out cookie dough and gets a workout as homework central on school nights. Now the family has ample room to chop, bake and make memories.
The huge island is emphasized by its parade of lights and row of counter stools. “Repeating identical shapes pleases the eye and creates a sense of order,” says designer Orsi Panos. The rustic range hood echoes the rich tones in the island base and window frames. The custom butcher block – chop! chop! – was chosen for its European charm. “I can’t wait till it gets that wonderful well-used, well-loved look,” says the designer.

The base of the island pops against the bank of white millwork of the pantry and refrigerator. And while the island adds flair, it also bolsters family-forward functionality: the pullout fridge drawer makes it easy for the kids to grab drinks, and parents can quickly heat leftovers right in the undercounter microwave.
The reeded glass in the wooden upper cabinet (top right) holds drinkware. “Most of us don’t have china cabinets anymore, so including a glass-fronted cabinet is a relaxed-looking alternative,” says Orsi. The modern, airy look of open shelves is great, but small appliances are better off hidden away, so Orsi customized a pullout cubby (bottom right) that glides effortlessly below an attractive display shelf.

The white cabinetry and light, stone-textured sink contrast their dark, bold fixtures and hardware. “Details like this are the most overlooked but are, in fact, the single most important of all the finishing touches. Bad choices ruin a good look, and good choices elevate a space,” says Orsi.
In the Details
“Kitchens have become extensions of our living spaces,” says Orsi. “So, if there’s room in there for art, why not?” She’s referring to the framed graphite artwork that’s propped on an open shelf beneath a stately library sconce. Like the sisal runner, wall art gives the kitchen a more casual, approachable vibe. Says Orsi: “It downplays the utilitarian aspect of the kitchen by softening harder surfaces, such as the porcelain backsplash and countertops.”

Having large gatherings was a cramped ordeal. Patti’s fix: remove walls, reclaim space and create multiple hang-out zones. Now when they entertain, everyone has a seat – bet you know who gets the comfy bench.
he is so cute!” declares designer Patti Wilson of her clients’ five-year-old daughter. “The moment she spied the bench seat, she hopped up and laid right down. She was definitely claiming her space!” Nothing could have been more in line with the design goals for this home in Woodbridge, Ont. For years, the family of three had been making do (while bumping into one another) in a cut-off kitchen with a clunky cube-shaped island.
Designer Patti Wilson removed two walls to turn an awkward space by the stairs into a chic dining nook. The marble table nestles into the bench seat, which is covered in performance fabric, as are the chairs. A sconce brightens up the rich navy wall. “Scuffproof paint is great for walls like this that get lots of wear and tear,” says Patti. Mauve hints in the tabletop and window shade have subtle depth.

Brass feet and a tile “rug” set in the hardwood floor give the island a furniture feel, as do the cabinetry doors, which have a wider profile than those on the perimeter cabinetry. The stainlesssteel appliances, says designer Alexandra Chapkin (shown right), looked so good next to the marble, green and oak that Alexandra left them exposed rather than hide them behind custom panels. A farmhouse-style sink and black window mullions are a subtle nod to the home’s 1914 vintage.

he magic of this Vancouver kitchen reno by designer Alexandra Chapkin is in the mix of materials. Pale oak perimeter cabinetry; touches of black, white and stainless steel for edge; and a dramatic swath of Pietra Grigia marble for the backsplash combine to strike a modern and organic mood. But the star player is the generous olive green island, which features plenty of storage on one side and is roomy enough for seating, extra drawers and a strategically placed wine fridge on the other – naturally!

LOOK UP Designer Jodie Rosen and her team reinvigorated the kitchen from the top down. They couldn’t change the position of the range hood over the island, so they replaced the original bulky hood with a compact version that doesn’t block the view. It’s framed with a dropped ceiling to accommodate new pot lights and finished to reference the overall aesthetic. “The black trim connects nicely to the upper cabinetry for flow, and the angled panelling is consistent with the pattern of the flooring,” says Jodie. The porcelain’s maximalist veining imparts a cool, graphic edge.

Designer Jodie Rosen serves up a bold kitchen that’s in sync with its stylish owners. LUKEY he fashion-forward owners of this Toronto condo loved its location (in one of the city’s best shopping districts), but if the original 300-square-foot kitchen were a garment, it would be a bad fit. “It hadn’t been touched since the ’80s,” says designer Jodie Rosen. “Think cheap floor tiles and melamine cabinets and countertops.” For Jodie and her team to achieve their design vision, a full reno would be required. “We wanted sexy and sophisticated,” she says. “The mix of black and walnut with veined porcelain is just that.” In other words, it’s a perfect fit.

One end of the kitchen posed a challenge that’s common in condo renos: a wall that couldn’t be moved. “We decided to create a little usable nook behind that wall and added in a 50-square-foot pantry with wine storage,” says Jodie. “I love the peekaboo quality of the glass doors – they showcase the extension but also offer a bit of privacy.” The fashionable homeowners love Paris, and the white-oak chevron flooring was chosen as a nod to that as well as to make the space seem more expansive.

Flat-front cabinetry feels sleek, a look that’s furthered by no hardware on the uppers. Walnut veneer on the island, lower cabinets and ceiling achieves a rich warmth and is a sophisticated contrast to the black’s dramatic effect. “Black was an obvious choice for us, as it feels much more exciting than a typical white kitchen does,” says Jodie. It links nicely to the porcelain’s graphic veining, especially on the backsplash. The owners like to entertain, so the porcelain is a practical finish as well – it’s stain resistant, so there are no concerns about red wine spills. “This kitchen marries function with style,” says the designer. “I love the mix of colours and materials and that we created something unique for the cool couple who live here.”

The full-size pantry (far left) off the kitchen features a cane-front drawer to allow air to circulate around stored vegetables. Timeless touches like beadboard walls and a checkerboard tile floor bring a country flavour. Designer Candace Plotz (shown left) says balancing modern e ciency with classic touches is the secret to style that lasts.
Tactile elements lend warmth throughout. Above a quartet of stools with comfy woven-seagrass backs, the pendant lights are large enough to give needed illumination, but their slim lines don’t add visual weight. The tone of the wood-clad range hood matches the ceiling beams in the nearby living room, while the marble backsplash tiles offer subtle pattern and sheen. or their new home in the eastern Ontario countryside, designer Candace Plotz’s clients wanted a kitchen that would stand the test of time. Like the best country kitchens, it’s big and functional, with plenty of storage, a generous 10-foot-long island and a side pantry. But unlike some all-white kitchens that can feel cool, this one is full of heart, and some of the credit goes to wonderfully textural elements like the range hood, stools and backsplash. “There’s so much warmth and character to this kitchen,” says Candace. “It may be brand new, but all the vintage-y touches and textures make it feel classic.”

A new, softer colour scheme was key. “In design today, we’re saying goodbye to cool greys, and going to warmer greys, stone and taupey colours,” says Karl. “The great thing about this palette is that it’s fresh now but will also stay beautiful for years to come.” That’s a crucial consideration for anyone contemplating a kitchen reno. “It’s is a huge commitment to renovate a kitchen, so you don’t want to get tired of it after just a few years,” says Karl. “The new palette completely transforms the space – it will take them through the next 10 to 15 years at least.” Story
The skinny Shaker-style cabinetry (like traditional Shaker-style, but with a slim frame instead of a chunky one) has a modern, uncluttered feel. Designers Karl Lohnes and Peter Paquette made sure it not only looks fresh but also conceals a wealth of well-organized storage. In a cabinet beneath the built-in coffee machine (right), a hidden drawer is a “station” for tea bags, beans and cups. “The coffee machine was a bit of a splurge,” Karl laughs, “but it was a great investment, and they use it several times a day.”

t’s not that there was anything technically wrong with the old kitchen, says designer and Style at Home columnist Karl Lohnes. The original white and grey space was cutting edge when the owners bought the house in the late 2000s, but 12 years later, an update was overdue. Now that a reno was in the works, Karl’s clients had a list of wants and needs, including better integration with the adjacent dining room and patio, and increased storage (“No kitchen ever has enough!” says the designer). As well, their adult daughter, who lives with them, is an enthusiastic home cook, so it was time for an upgrade to fancier appliances. Finally, they were hungry for a new look that would last another decade or more, needing only minor updates as timeKarlpassed.joined forces with designer Peter Paquette of 1982 Design to mastermind the transition. “It’s great to work with someone younger and innovative like Peter,” says Karl. “He knows the latest products and helps us stay on top of what’s new.”

Seven bronze and frosted glass pendants over the island are a much lighter alternative to one giant fixture. “They really act like a floating sculpture,” says Karl. “They remind me of June bugs.”

Bathrooms are the powerhouses of every home. Small but mighty, these spaces require special consideration when renovating. A lot of trades are required to complete these little rooms, and you’ll make a ton of choices – aesthetic and otherwise – that will have big impact on your everyday life. Have no fear! We’ve got all the practical info you need to confidently tackle this complicated room. In what order do the different trades do their work? Typically, work unfolds in this order: demolition, carpentry, plumbing, electricity, drywall, caulking, tile laying, painting, then installing fixtures and vanities or other storage. Following this, bring in the plumber and the electrician again to finish installation. Last steps are paint touch-ups and final finishing touches.

TIP A good contractor will be able to field all your specific logistical questions. Do I need a permit even if I’m not moving any fixtures? Check with your municipality; each one has different requirements. The onus for getting a permit is on the homeowner, not the contractor. How should I finance my reno? The most common ways to bankroll reno projects are via a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit. You can also take out a personal line of credit or borrow directly from a supplier (cabinet manufacturer, etc.), although interest rates are typically higher with these options. What can I DIY to cut costs? Demolition, painting, floor coverings, wallpaper and moulding.

What are some common pitfalls to avoid?
Get a written and signed contract with your designer and/or contractor before any money changes hands. If you run into issues or disagreements later, you’ve got a written record. Anticipate extra costs. For example, after the demo, you might realize you need to redo the flooring or insulate the walls. Allocate funds in your budget for unexpected costs to avoid stress and having to compromise by shifting funds around. Ensure you have enough storage; aesthetics are important, but function can’t be compromised.

STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2022 | 137 ADVICE
EVERY YEAR, THE DESIGN INDUSTRY GATHERS AT THE KITCHEN & BATH INDUSTRY SHOW (KBIS) IN FLORIDA TO SEE THE LATEST PRODUCTS AND TRENDS, AND TO RECOGNIZE THE BEST IN DESIGN. ON THESE PAGES, WE FEATURE THE WINNING WORK THAT CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION AT KBIS 2022.
Don’t cut corners on washroom fittings or lighting. Make sure that your whites, which all have an undertone (usually cool or warm in tone), don’t clash – we’re talking bathroom fixtures, walls and vanity countertops. Steer clear of trends that are on the way out (these days, that’s industrial light fixtures and anything grey). Lastly, have all the materials delivered before work begins to avoid delays during construction. What if I only have one washroom and it’s the one I’m renovating? We recommend you plan to stay elsewhere for two to four weeks to save yourself stress. Help to keep the project running smoothly by communicating house rules to your contractor or to the trades; be clear (and reasonable) about expectations for cleanliness, noise and working hours.

What makes this bathroom a gem isn’t precious, expensive materials and finishes. Rather, its value comes from Patti’s juicy colour choices. The biggest surprise?
BLUE CRUSH
PLAYING IT SOFT
For designer Patti Wilson, inspiration began not with the sumptuous blue-and-gold wallpaper, but with the navy shower tiles and their subtle tonal variations. The simple act of exchanging the former giant corner-mounted tub for a smaller egg-shaped freestanding tub added much-needed elbow room, and by avoiding having to move the plumbing fixtures, Patti kept costs down.
To balance the rich colour and pattern of the walls and vanity, other surfaces –like white quartz counters and subtly veined porcelain tiles – play supporting roles. Black faucets are a more muted option than brass or chrome. A glassand-brass sconce (left) adds sparkle without hiding the exquisite wallpaper with its dreamy chinoiserie feel.
“Even though there’s a lot of bold pattern here,” says the designer, “the whole space is somehow very calming.”

Faceted crystal sconces above the mirrors and a chandelier over the tub deliver five-star sophistication, but the hero here is the vanity. “Every item that the couple uses on a daily basis was indexed first, then we created the storage to hide it,” says designer Diana Rose. “Even the plugs for the blow-dryer and styling tools are hidden inside drawers.” Glass doors veil both the walk-in shower and the private restroom. “Even though they’re different spaces, they look streamlined thanks to the side-by-side doors.” The marble floor tiles, which are super glossy, have dramatic matte veining. “Every room should have one element that’s the star. irrors are an essential part of any bathroom design, if they’re on the wall, that is. “The original ensuite had a mirrored ceiling above the tub,” says designer Jodie Rosen. “It would have been distracting, to say the least, to have a bath underneath it!” Other deficiencies included a great divide in the 125-square-foot space, which featured two separate areas: one with a tub, toilet and sink, and the other with a shower and sink. By reconfiguring the bathroom, Jodie was able to make it more functional and give it a sophisticated countenance that reflects its owners’ style, rather than an aerial of the bathtub.
