Not only do they look seriously impressive, a well-planned island unit can make light work of delivering dinner. Factors such as size, shape and special features all play a part in the price. How much does a kitchen island cost?

It’s possible to bag a freestanding design that will add prep space, storage and room for stools to your kitchen, for less than £350 (hello, Ikea’s Vadholma!). How much will a bespoke island set me back?

As with anything that is made uniquely for you, it will always be more expensive than something mass-produced. There are too many variables to give an exact figure, but be prepared to part with upwards of £5,000 for something special. Can you buy a kitchen island on its own?

Yes. As long as space allows, introducing an island can transform the functionality and look of your kitchen. Many bespoke kitchen makers are happy to create individual items, like island units.

Does it add value?

An island is the single-most requested feature for new kitchens, which suggests they are very desirable. A well-designed island with plenty of space around it and room for stools will undoubtedly improve the value of your home, and your lifestyle. How much does it cost to install an island?

It doesn’t cost anything to install a freestanding unit bought off the shelf. The cost of installing a fitted island will depend on who is doing it and their fees. If you get a builder or fitter to quote a day rate, make sure they give you an idea of how many days it might take. Two days should be sufficient; however, extra costs to consider include work by a plumber or electrician, and don’t forget the worktop fabricator’s fitting charge, if applicable.

The best islands have a ‘working side’, countered with a ‘social side’ that has seating for guests
