IN CONVERSATION WITH Elizabeth Scarlett Petrides

Founder of her own homeware brand, Elizabeth Scarlett Petrides joins us for a chat

What’s a typical working day?

At around 6.30am, I wake up with my little girl, Meiri. I head to the office at 9am to check emails before catching up with the product team on how any new designs are developing and to review campaigns – right now, it’s Christmas. At 1pm, I stop for lunch and take our dog, Lamu, for a walk. The rest of the afternoon is spent replying to emails, moodboarding and painting. In the evening, once Meiri is in bed, my husband, Alex, and I will have dinner and catch up on a TV series.

How did you get into homeware design?

I completed an art foundation course at Central Saint Martins before going on to design homeware and prints for retailers, including Debenhams and John Lewis & Partners. In 2015, I founded Elizabeth Scarlett, translating my paintings onto fabrics. I learned about the sales side of things at each stage of the journey, refining my style along the way.

What inspires you?

Nature and wildlife – I’m always looking for simple beauty in the everyday. I also love to travel and I’m never without my sketchbook. When I’m relaxed and life is a little quieter, I find it’s the best time to see the magic!

What would you save in a house fire?

A picture of pink bougainvillea against a yellow background. I painted it on a trip to the Bahamas, so it reminds me of calm, sunny times and a feeling that anything is possible. Home is...

My sanctuary.

Any home styling secrets to share?

Don’t over clutter and go slow. It’s so exciting when you start with somewhere new, but it’s useful to live in the space for a bit first; see where the light is, where you spend most of your time and how you use a space.

You’ve had a lot of exciting partnerships. Which one has been your favourite?

Our latest conservation collaboration with the charity, Blue Marine Foundation. We will be relocating baby sea turtles through sales of our new Island Paradise collection. I’m obsessed with the turtle cushions; I can’t wait to find a spot for them in our home!

How do you want your designs to make people feel?

I want to bring joyfulness, colour and detail into our customers’ homes. Hopefully, people feel like they’ve discovered something that’s a bit of them!

What’s your proudest career moment?

Seeing our products on This Morning with Holly Willoughby. I couldn’t believe that the business had come so far!

What’s next?

We’ve got some stunning pyjamas coming; I can’t wait to grab a pair for myself.
