Taking Care of Our
MOMS
while staying home & staying safe
During these difficult times when people are separated from friends and family, this can be especially hard on our moms, especially if they live alone. They are missing us, missing their grandkids, just missing normal humana connection in general. While we can’t give them a hug, we can still make an effort to connect with them on a regular basis.
FUN VIDEO CHAT IDEAS • Read-Aloud a story book
• Sing songs or make music together • Play board games (child can move both piece) or play games like Taboo or Scattergories • Have a dance party • Have a tea party or picnic (pretend or real) • Dine together. Talk while you eat. • Play dress up • Ask “Would you rather?” questions • Host a talent or magic show • Tell silly jokes • Put on a puppet show • Play Pictionary or charades • Play Hangman • Fill in Mad Libs • Have your child interview grandma like a newsperson • Create art together. Think of a theme you can both paint or draw and share

SUPPLY ESSENTIALS
If you normally talk once a week, add a couple of chats in between. Even if they are retired and used to being home a lot, they are still missing out on day to day interaction with people; mailman, hair salon, grocery store, etc…
We’ve all been encouraged to stay home and limit our trips even to the grocery store. This is even more important for anyone in the atrisk categories, which likely includes most of our parents. Do the shopping for her. Check weekly to make sure she has everything she needs. If you don’t live close, arrange for grocery delivery if she can’t do that for herself.
GET TOGETHER If it is allowed in your area, make arrangements to meet up in your driveway, or hers, for an in person visit on occasion. Everyone can bring their own chair and own beverages and follow guidelines for staying safe (wear masks and stay at least 6 feet apart at all times).
HAVE A WINDOW VISIT If your mom is in a nursing home or assisted living, make arrangements to have a meeting at her window (with it closed, of course). You may not be able to have a lengthy meeting in this setting, but even a short visit will do wonders for her frame of mind. The grandkids can even serenade her with a song or bring window markers and play a game of tic-tactoe.

STAY IN TOUCH
Gather up some items your mom loves and safely pack them up and send them to her. Snacks, books, flowers, scented lotion, etc… All her faves to brighten her day. If you have small children, have them lay on a piece of paper with arms extended. Trace around their silhouette. Color and send as a virtual hug!

TAKE HER DINNER Let’s face it, we are all getting a little tired of our own cooking right now. Show some support to your favorite local restaurants and pick up mom’s favorite. If you’re unable to deliver it to her, arrange for a local food delivery company to take it.
ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM If you didn’t know what Zoom was a month ago, you do now! Set up some sort of video call with your mom weekly. House Party allows you to play games like Quick Draw, Heads Up, etc. You can also use FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, Hangouts etc.. Seeing each other’s smile will cheer everyone up.

In theory, staying home with your family 24/7 sounds wonderful. In reality, it can be very stressful. Make sure you are taking care of yourselves to keep that positive energy flowing. Here are a few quick ways to do this. Bloom some cheer. Either pick up a bouquet from the grocery store, or pick a few flowers from your home garden. Having a vase with fresh flowers on your kitchen table will brighten everyone's day. Get lost in a book. Set aside time each day to relax with a good book. That little escape will be just enough to perk you up to face the rest of your day. Soak it up. Take a long hot bath. Add some bath salts, scented candles, and relaxing music and you will feel like you are at the spa. Tea Time. Enjoy some flavored tea or coffee on the back patio while the kids are doing their school work. Tell them to save any questions they have and you will help them after your short break. Jam Session.
