Sue Bell founded Essex children’s charity ‘Kids Inspire’ in 2007. It is a community based organisation that aims to support vulnerable and disadvantaged young people and their families. Currently, Kids Inspire is based in Chelmsford and Southend, and provides a bespoke package of intervention individually tailored to each child’s needs. Kids Inspire strives to build good relationships and help young people achieve their full potential so they can become stable adults who contribute positively to society. We are supported by the patronage of Anya Hindmarch (international fashion designer). We are also the chosen charity for Sainsbury Springfield, Essex County Cricket Club, Baker labels, Subway (Chelmsford branches), Channels Golf Club and The County Hotel for 2012. We have continued to receive amazing support from local businesses, such as STV Building Services, E2V, Britvic and M&G, who have supported us through donations and amazing activities over the past year.

Shut Up!!! You’re in Harry’s World now! Just off the main high street in Brentwood sits a new shop with a very modest exterior, but don’t be fooled take a step inside and you are transported to a land of camp glamour, sparkles and fun. Harry’s World is the brainchild of Harry Derbidge, one of the stars of The Only Way is Essex. Home to a selection of accessories, shoes and make-up, as well as a teethwhitening service, Harry’s World is a treasure trove of Essex fabulousness, and RM Magazine was invited along to the opening on July 10th. Rebecca Saunders spoke to Harry about his new shop and what he’s been up to since leaving TOWIE.

exclusive interview You obviously take a lot of pride in your appearance. What beauty item or piece of clothing could you absolutely not live without? Fake tan, obviously!! How have you chosen the items on sale in the shop? Who inspires your fashions and the way you dress? I chose everything on sale in the shop, and even designed some of it myself too. I have been working with Lemonade (www.lovelemonade.com) for a while now and have sourced a lot of my stuff from there. I started off with just a small selection of products and have now filled the whole shop. In terms of who inspires me, it’s hard to say. I’ve just tried to be true to myself and not take everything too seriously. The accessories and products on sale in Harry’s World are like me – lots of fun and very camp!

Who’s the most famous person you’ve met? Is there anyone you would still like to meet? I met Katy Perry a few weeks ago, and also Tom Hanks which was pretty amazing. I would like to meet Lady Gaga, but would LOVE to meet Britney Spears. She is so hot! Everyone loves Britney. I am gay and even I fancy her! Finally, what’s going to be big in Essex fashion over the next 12 months? What item of clothing or accessory should we all be out buying? I’m the first to admit I am not always up to date with all the current fashions or colour, but what I can say is that bling will always be in! Essex and bling go handin-hand. It will never die – bling forever! Follow Harry on Twitter @MrHarryDerbidge

You and the TOWIE team are responsible for some of the UK’s best known phrases – Shut Up!, Oh My God, well jel and reem to name a few – how does it feel to know you have influenced the phrases so many people in the UK now use? There’s no denying that I am responsible for Shut Up!! People all over the country are saying it, and it’s so funny. It’s mad really – you hear it everywhere. I think my catchphrase is actually more famous than me!

What have you been doing since you left? Obviously getting Harry’s World up and running has taken up all my time over the past few weeks, and my mum has helped out loads. I’ve also been filming with Amy (Amy Childs, star of TOWIE and Harry’s cousin) and I’ve got a number of my own TV projects on the go too. These projects are all giving me the opportunity to be my own person and do my own thing. TOWIE is often described as a real life soap, but do you think we actually got to see the real Harry? I think you only saw half the real me, and there’s a side of me that was never shown. Yes I am gay, fun and camp, and I think this came across on the show. But I have a much more serious, quiet side too, and we all have secrets that we like to keep to ourselves. There’s still lots more of me to see.

So Harry, it’s been a few months since you left TOWIE. Do you miss it? Of course – I’ll always miss it. TOWIE was a good laugh to make and I had so much fun working alongside my friends. But it was right to move on when I did, and leaving the show has allowed me to work on a range of new things.

I’ve just tried to be true to myself and not take anything too seriously...

TOWIE is also responsible for putting Essex well and truly back on the map, and Essex is, without doubt, the place to be from these days. How does that feel? I am so proud to be from Essex, and happy we have helped to make it a really cool place to live. We never thought the show would be as popular as it has been. It’s unbelievable to think that there’s even TOWIE Tours of Essex now! Members of TOWIE have starred in various reality TV programmes over the past year (Mark in I’M a Celeb and Amy in Big Brother). Is this something you would ever consider doing? I have been approached with a number of different offers, and I would love to do the show that’s right for me, I want to do something different maybe Dancing on Ice as it involves performing and I love performing. I want to do something that hasn’t been done before.

I know it seems like we have barely even had a summer yet but the high street is already full of the latest Autumn/Winter trends for us fashion lovers to get our teeth into. One of the hottest looks this month is the army girl trend, think off duty Rihanna meets GI Joe... Khaki and stone tones are a great choice and so versatile and one huge theme (you seriously cannot miss it) is studding... not blinging diamantes but brass and gunmetal in spikes and nailheads. If you fancy it, there are also a camo jacket or two... so jump on the bandwagon and invest in some key pieces to master this hardcore look!

RM magazine were cordially invited the grand opening of Mi Neni. An eccentric boutique that has hit the high street with an authentic twist to cause a stir, on Saturday 7th July the unveiling of the Spanish Baby Boutique wowed the crowds as the doors were opened. The mother and daughter owned business is set along Ongar Road, next to TOWIE star, Lucy Mecklenburgh ‘Lucy’s Boutique’ and Harry Derbidges ‘Harry’s World’. With the row of shops lacking a child-like essence, Mi Neni has been welcomed by the locals with open arms. Itziar and Ainhoa, both had dreams of one day opening their very own clothing boutique in Brentwood. Inspired by the birth of Ainhoa’s son Oliver, they decided to stick to their Spanish origins and capture the essence of their heritage with ‘Mi Neni’ Spanish Baby Boutique. In creating the shop, they wanted to provide quality authentic Spanish clothing and accessories and have done so by sourcing everything direct from Spain.

RM spoke to guests whilst admiring the shops beautiful layout, many people complimenting ‘Mi Neni’ on how they have brought a touch of Spanish elegance to Brentwood and how compared to the norm of vajazzled accessories that surround the Brentwood boutique they have managed to create a sophisticated outlook towards their shop.

So head on down to Mi Neni’s, even if you’re not blessed with young ones, this is a place where you are able to appreciate fine quality and cultured products brought to you direct from Spain.

charity event

Kids Inspire Charity Ball

The Tuxedos were pressed and ball gowns were chosen as RM Magazine headed down to De Rougemont Manor for an evening of glamorous giving in aid of the ‘Kids Inspire’ Charity. On Saturday 14th July, STV pulled out all the stops for the Charity event of the year…The red carpet was rolled out and guests were greeted with Fire Performers, we knew we were in for a treat… 18

www.rmmagazine.co.uk

The Essex Based Charity that helps to Support Children and Families to create a better and more inspired positive future, that has been operating since 2007 has a newly found Knight in Shining Armour, STV who have taken responsibility for funding the Charity event.

The three course meal was served, leaving everyone bursting out of their stunning attire and ready to celebrate the Charity with the live auction.

Gabby from STV was helped by a range of Essex based sponsors and businesses such as, ‘Essex Events’ who supplied the performers and an organised silent auction by ‘FunRaising Events’ with enticing gifts that had the guests in ore, from Wayne Rooney’s signed football boot to a 5* Spanish Holiday.

The director of the Charity, Sue Bell, read a poem and told a short story about how the charity has helped a family. Sue then introduced Gabby from STV the main organiser, and now a glamorous assistant who showed off the top prizes around the room, the stakes were then raised after the unveiling of a Guitar signed by the One Direction boys, a signed Lionel Messi Photograph and A 2003 England Rugby World Cup Signed Shirt and the bids begun.

After being greeted by the MC for the night, Roger and seated for dinner, we were introduced to the plans for the night ahead. Tickets were flying out the door for your chance to show off your poker faces at the Vegas tables for a game of Roulette or Black Jack. A raffle was under way with a chance of winning the mouth watering Sweetie filled centre piece that our RM table had their eyes on! All the proceedings going towards the Charity, the night being such a buzz, it was bound to be a success.

The money raised racked up to a whopping £8,465, which will help the charity in an extortionate manner, after government funding has been cut, and will ensure families will still retrieve the support and therapy needed. The night was successful with the bustling Vegas tables, and a DJ to bring the dance floor to thriving extravaganza. A Charity event that raised over their expected target and a night to remember, the RM team Would like to Thank everyone who was involved and wish ‘Kids Inspire’ all the best.

ASK

Dr Jas

Wanting to know if the budget prices are the real deal or needing help in the gum department, well do not hesitate to get in touch with Dr Jas, his here to help with all your Dentistry Dilemmas…RM highly recommended his expertise when it comes to your pearly whites… I hate the amount of gum that shows when I smile Gum reshaping is becoming ever more popular at the moment. Depending on the amount of gum available, it is possible to get a very aesthetically pleasing result with no discomfort and in a relatively short appointment time. Most of the smile design treatments will include some form of gum reshaping as part of the treatment so that a perfect outcome is achieved. Before the treatment starts the gums are made numb so that there is no pain whatsoever. A special piece of equipment is used to reshape the gums and cauterise them at the same time. All that remains is for the gums to heal in their new position. The gums are speedily returned to normal with the aid of hot salt water rinses every few hours for about a week.

Can I have fixed teeth without waiting months? Yes you can! There is a fantastic way of replacing missing teeth without having to wear a denture while implants heal. Sometimes this treatment is called ‘Same Day Teeth’. The first part of the treatment is a CT scan to enable our Implant Dentist to pin point the exact placement of the Before implants. This treatment allows implants to be placed on the same day that teeth are removed (six implants on the upper jaw and four on the lower). A temporary bridge is made in the laboratory and fitted to the implants straight away. Once full healing has taken place (about 3 months) a new After and permanent bridge is made and fitted. During the three month healing time care is needed on the temporary bridge and implants, for this reason the patient is asked to follow a special eating regime. After this the permanent teeth are placed and you can carry on with everyday life as normal.

Before

After

I would love to have a full smile makeover but I’m not sure if my budget will allow this? What could I have for a lower budget? You don’t have to scrimp on your treatment just to fit it into a tight budget. We offer several finance options that can be tailored to your specific budget. So if you want the treatment that you have always dreamt of, it is now well within your reach. Before Our finance arrangements are very easy to put into place! There is only one form to fill in and we can usually tell you right away if you qualify for finance. We offer 0% finance. This means that a full smile makeover of say ten porcelain veneers could cost from as little as £151 a month! Or a After clear Brace from £49 a month! There are cheaper treatments which can also achieve a fantastic result, these are known as mini makeovers and involve perhaps four veneers and free whitening or cosmetic contouring and whitening, depending on what your desired outcome is.

Gossip Drip by Zara Zubeidi

Essex and the ‘new masculine’

Next time you find yourself sitting on a train, look around to see how many businessmen are wearing the colour pink. Fashion doesn’t just dramatically change for women; the idea of wearing pink in the nineties was as unheard of as high waist trousers making a comeback on the catwalk. And the colour pink is only the beginning. Today’s concept of the ‘new masculine’ has ensured that male grooming is acceptable, or in many cases, a necessity. There are men in Essex whose weekend trip to the shop will run via the beauty salon- back wax, anyone?! TOWIE is at the forefront of the male grooming agenda, with the majority of male characters sporting a sunless glow, immaculately styled hair, groomed eyebrows and a ‘reem’ fragrance.

Miss Penguin PR launched their brand new business at Faces Nightclub in Essex on Friday 29th June, after recently being established early this year. Delivering a high level of strategic public relations specializing in fashion, beauty, entertainment and lifestyle, they kicked off their event with a fashion show which brought together and showcased a variety of their clients on and off the catwalk. The show was hosted by the director of Miss Penguin PR, Danielle Bigaignon, alongside Adam Ryan who owns Essex and Marbella Fashion Week. Hundreds of guests arrived to take their seats and lucky ones received a free cheeky goody bag. Online retailers Celeb-a-porter.com, Georgeous Boutique and Glitz & Glam Boutique showcased their collections alongside fashion designers Souzounushi and Denise Van-Weenen. Latimer Couture also teamed their Latimer Rocks jewelery collection with the clothing to accessorise all the catwalk looks. The models hair was styled by Spargo Hairdressing in Brentwood, Shellac nails were done by Havering Beauty Academy and Rebecca Ryther created stunning make up looks. With all the clients working hard, the night was a huge success, leading on to a lively and buzzing after party with over 900 guests! Check out their website www.misspenguinpr.co.uk to find out how they can help you and your brand. Follow them on Twitter and Facebook @MissPenguinPR_ for regular updates and you can also contact them via email or phone: info@misspenguinpr.co.uk, t: 07866 986809.

The debate surrounding men and fashion ultimately lies in what a ‘man’ is perceived to be. Some women thrive on the fact that their partner takes such pride in their own appearance. But at what point does this become unattractive? Fighting for the mirror? Misplacing your UGG boots and finding them on your boyfriend? I personally prefer a balance in a man when it comes to fashion. There’s nothing wrong with being comfortable but going out in a onesie just doesn’t do it for me- yes, I’m talking to you, Joey Essex! Men have just as much of a right as women to wear whatever they desire, but at the end of the day, I’m not going to rely on a man to protect me that has spent more time perfecting his hair than I have on my mascara.

It’s been 7 years of waiting, a lot of preparation, dedication and now it’s finally arrived…The London 2012 Olympics… RM has put together a special feature to give you the low down on the Games, exclusive interviews with some Essex Olympians, event schedules and what’s happening right on your doorstep… Image provided by www.london2012.com www.rmmagazine.co.uk 27

exclusive interview

Home Grown Winners Amongst Team GB stand three Essex Olympians; impressive sporting talents, hard work and dedication has earned them their place in the 2012 Olympics.RM Magazine caught up with them ahead of the Games to hear their inspirational stories.

Name: Chloe Rogers, 27 Sport: Hockey Born in Essex

Name: Richard Hounslow, 31 Sport: Canoeing Born in Essex

Name: David Florence, 30 Sport: Canoeing Lives in Essex

At what age did you first start participating in your chosen sporting fields? Chloe: I started playing hockey at Primary school in Great Dunmow on a concrete court just the very basics of the game so was about 6/7 years old. I then joined Dunmow minis team. Richard: My parents actually met canoeing and so I was pretty much born into the sport. They have pictures of me sitting in a canoe barely able to see over the edge! But I didn’t start competing in canoe slalom until I was 8 years old. David: Thirteen

boots or a new paddle. I think I was about 12 at the time and already on the England canoe team, so the choice was easy and I never looked back. David: I don’t have any particular great achievements, but my interest like others has been from a young age, but not just canoeing also other sports such as, swimming, and tennis.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? Chloe: I think past sporting history of the Olympics and wanting to be part of it. I also have a strong desire to be an Olympic medalist and you don’t have many chances at it in your life so you have to give it your all whilst you can do so. Richard: I think there are a lot of fantastic athletes who I could use as an inspiration, but at the end of the day, my inspiration comes from my own aspirations. David: I draw my inspiration from my sport, the opportunities its gives me, like to be able to compete in the Olympic Games is a massive inspiration and motivation to me.

Do you have any previous sporting achievements? Chloe: I was part of the GB team for Beijing Olympics where we finished 6th, World cup Bronze medal, Two commonwealth Games bronze medal and three European Bronze medals. I have also represented England at Golf in the Portuguese Ladies Amateur Open and was Essex Ladies golf champion in 2003. Richard: Canoeing has been my life for as long as I can remember. I used to play a bit of football, but the seasons would clash a little. My parents made me chose one day by offering to buy me a new pair of football

www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Did you ever expect to be representing Britain in the Olympics? Chloe: It has always been a dream of mine since being a kid to be part of an Olympic Games and to win a Gold medal. It seemed like a long way off and I never knew if I would ever achieve it, but gave it a good effort by working hard and playing as much sport as possible. It is also extra special to have a ‘home’ Olympics in London. Richard: I think expect is the wrong word. I certainly dreamed of it since watching canoe slalom get back into the Olympics back in 1992. So it’s been a long road, made all the more special by being a home Olympics! David: It wasn’t something I expected when I was young, but was something I aimed for as my dream. I remember setting a target of going to the 2000 Olympics as a swimmer when I was about 10 years old.

What was the best advice you were ever given? Chloe: If you want to achieve something work hard enough to achieve it and find a way of doing it whilst overcoming barriers in the process. Richard: “What’s the worst that can happen? Life goes on!” This is something that has really helped me with the mental demands of competing. David: To focus on being the best that I can be, day in day out rather than concentrating on things that are out of my control.

exclusive interview David: I commit to training very hard and I maintain a positive attitude which I think helps me stay focused being a main key to my success. Do you have a saying, motto or general belief that you live your life by? Chloe: Some people want it to happen, some people wish it to happen and only a few make it happen. Richard: For me, it’s all about enjoying life. David: No, not really. But I’m always looking to be the best that I can. What do you have planned for the future? Chloe: That’s a very good question, I’m not completely sure yet, I’m planning to see how the

What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your success? Chloe: I ensure I get the right amount of rest after training to help recovery, so that I am feeling fresh to train again the next day and the rest of the week. Also what I eat before, during and after training to fuel my body right. Eating good foods helps your body have energy to train, recover and aids repair if injured. Richard: Over the last year I have used performance analysis to a greater extent than in the past. This involves using computer software to view video of my training in slow motion. It also allows me to watch up to 4 clips of the same move head to head, so you can see what stoke patterns and boat angle works best on a certain move. It’s very geeky!

Olympics go and how I feel afterwards as to whether I want to continue on to the next games in Rio in 2016. However, I am a keen golfer and would love to work in the golf industry long term so may try to develop that. Richard: Right now, my life is planned up until the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Beyond that, who knows! David: I haven’t looked very far beyond London 2012. Everything has been geared towards that point for so long that for now it’s all I’m focused on. Beyond the Olympics though, I still feel that I can make improvements to my canoeing and am in no hurry to retire from the sport that I love.

Ingredients: 2 vanilla pods 1 oz pink peppercorns in brine 16fl oz double cream 3oz castor sugar 3 egg yolks

Summer Fruit Tartlette with Pink Peppercorn Ice-cream A beautiful and lovely refreshing dessert to go down well in the good weather. pink peppercorns add a tangy bite to the ice-cream and have a natural affinity with strawberries. I have chosen an easy recipe, which doesn’t need an ice-cream maker but for a better result please get in touch and I can let you have details of a longer recipe…. 1. Halve the vanilla pods lengthways and scrape out the seeds. Add the pods to the cream and bring to the boil, then add the sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved. 2. Meanwhile, whisk the egg yolks in a large bowl then slowly whisk in the hot cream mixture. 3. Drain peppercorns, crush lightly with a pestle and mortar.

4. You still want them with a little brine in so the tangy taste transfers to the mix. 5. Pour the mixture through a fine sieve into another bowl and whisk in the vanilla seeds and crushed peppercorns. Pour the mixture into a freezer-proof container and freeze for 2-3 hours, or until set. 6. Pipe into small china bowls as pictured, and then keep in freezer until ready to serve.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster Roars In

The new Vantage Roadster, available as a limited edition in selected markets worldwide, immediately becomes the most potent example of the open-top Vantage range and mixes the breath-taking power of Aston Martin’s naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 engine with the established thrills of Vantage Roadster driving for what is an unforgettable sports car experience. The V12 Vantage Roadster’s 6.0-litre engine, mated as in the Coupe to a six-speed manual gearbox, generates 517 PS at 6,500 rpm and a muscular 570 Nm of torque at 5,750 rpm. It has been intelligently packaged into the Vantage Roadster’s compact form to fully exploit the sports-orientated model’s ample natural agility.

48

www.rmmagazine.co.uk

The naturally-aspirated V12 provides high levels of power and torque yet it delivers a flexible, refined driving experience illuminated with the potential for truly electrifying performance. The 0-62 mph sprint is dispatched in just 4.5 seconds* while this most potent Aston Martin Roadster is capable of 190 mph*. While the Roadster naturally shares much of the technical and specification features of the V12 Vantage Coupe, some elements are redesigned to take account of the Roadster’s neat packaging and engaging dynamics. The V12 Vantage Roadster features a redesigned rear boot lid and lower front air intake to maintain a level of dynamic performance that’s fully in keeping with the V12 Coupe, while there are also a number of unique chassis revisions. These include a modified rear damper set-up, front and rear damper valve tuning and a new rear spring design. These changes, in conjunction with Aston Martin’s use of Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, ensure the sports car delivers dramatic straight-line performance as well as outstanding handling. Styled to be as beautiful as it is potent, the new Roadster boasts a number of eyecatching additions that underline its sporty characteristics. Carbon fibre side strakes; a carbon fibre front splitter and rear diffuser; carbon fibre mirror caps and carbon fibre rear lamp infills – plus the new forged alloy wheel design – should leave the sports car cognoscenti in no doubt that this is a truly exclusive Aston Martin.

Section At the rear, the boot lid on the V12 Vantage Roadster incorporates a more pronounced ‘flip’ to reduce rear lift and improve stability at high speeds. The V12’s diffuser houses a large, centre-mounted oil cooler and two large tail-pipe finishers.

Land Rover Defender Xtech

As with the front splitter, the carbon fibre rear diffuser is hand-made to ensure the direction and consistency of the weave and ensure the best possible finish. Inside, there are other distinguishing features that make the new car stand out from its illustrious siblings in the sought-after Aston Martin V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage line-up. Subtle additions such as the use of glass switches in the lower centre stack elevate yet further the luxurious ambience in the V12 Vantage Roadster cabin. While for those seeking the ultimate in V12 Vantage Roadster personalisation, a package of interior trim comprising carbon fibre facia and carbon fibre gearshift surround is available. Unique to the V12 Vantage and new V12 Vantage Roadster is the engine’s “Sport” mode button, which enables the driver to select between two different powertrain modes. Normal mode is the default from start-up and provides not only a more relaxed throttle response but also a quieter, more refined exhaust note. This creates a more progressive throttle response, suited to ‘everyday’ situations such as when driving in heavy traffic. Sport mode, meanwhile, is designed for use in more dynamic driving situations where sharper responses are required. It has a number of tangible effects on the powertrain including a sharper throttle response, with the engine delivering more torque during the early stages of throttle pedal travel. Exhaust system bypass valves are also kept open for longer to create a particularly sporty exhaust note. Available to order in selected markets now, the new Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster is priced at £150,000 RRP in the UK.

The iconic Land Rover Defender now has even more rugged appeal with the launch of the Defender XTech Special Edition. Offering customers the same assured breadth of capability, the Defender XTech stands out from the crowd in Orkney Grey or striking Nara Bronze, which is unique to this special edition, with contrast Santorini Black roof and wheel arches and black chequer plate along the bumper and sills. A special ‘DEFENDER’ decal sits above the rear LED lights whilst the front lights are enhanced with Santorini Black headlamp surrounds in contrast to the body colour. This distinctive front end design is complemented with a body colour grille and gloss black Land Rover lettering on the bonnet. A rear step bumper assembly aids entry, exit and loading. Gloss Black Saw Tooth 16-inch alloy wheels and MTR off-road tyres complete the look giving the Defender XTech a powerfully strong and purposeful stance. A pure Ebony part leather interior complements both the Orkney Grey and Nara Bronze with contrast Lunar stitching. The Land Rover logo is embossed on front headrests whilst carpet mats have the Defender logo woven in. To harmonise with the exterior of this special edition, the central switch panel matches the body colour of the vehicle with the same paint finish. Powered by the 2.2-litre diesel engine with six-speed manual transmission, the Defender boasts 360Nm of torque for effortless towing and excellent driver refinement whether on or off-road. The Defender XTech Special Edition is on sale now starting at £27,995. www.rmmagazine.co.uk

All three were among a talented list of performers who donated their own time to help raise money for St Francis Hospice. The Brickyard also played a big part by donating the venue and supplying all the food for free. The event was a huge success and raised over £4000 for the charity. Hosted in our very own Hylands Park, Chelmsford, this year’s V Festival bills some of the biggest names in the industry and hottest new talent in town. Indie-rock dominates with the headlining spots going to The Stone Roses and The Killers...

The Stone Roses

Reunited and raring to go, The Stone Roses are back. The Fathers of Indie are in the middle of a worldwide comeback tour, but will be here in Essex to headline V 2012. A triumphant return in their hometown last month confirmed that the Manchester lads are back on form and with rumours of new material written, fans are being rewarded for their fifteen year patience.

The Killers

Indie rockers from across the pond, The Killers will also headline this year. Dashing those break-up rumours, the Vegas stars will be bringing their almost five-year hiatus to an end at V Festival. Their set will include well-known tunes from previous albums along with a taste of forthcoming record Battle Born, which is set for release this autumn.

Noel Gallagher Snow Patrol

Having quite deservingly been crowned NME’s God-like Genius in January, Noel Gallagher is one of Britain’s finest in the music industry. Following Oasis’s split three years ago, Noel’s solo career was wildly anticipated; and he didn’t let us down. Expect some belters from the Manchester hero, taken from both his High Flying Birds record and a few familiars from the past.

This year saw the release of the Celtic quartet’s sixth studio album, Fallen Empires. Packed with pounding drum beats and wicked synths, though somewhat dissimilar to their previous more melancholy work, these tracks will be something special to hear live. Old favourites like Chasing Cars and Run will undoubtedly get everyone singing, but it will be this new livelier Snow Patrol that gets V Festival dancing.

...but the line up is far from limited; from hip-hop Queen Nicki Minaj to Essex‘s Prince of pop Olly Murs, they’ll all be there making sure you have one hell of a weekend. RM Magazine has investigated into this summer’s Essex style festival to give you the lowdown.

Olly Murs

Pixie Lott

He’s toured America, and now he’s coming home. For a second year running, local boy Olly Murs will play V Festival. Upgrading this year to a main stage slot, the singer will charm the crowds with chart-toppers like “Heart Skips a Beat” and “Dance with me Tonight“. The ladies will swoon in their wellies.

Brentwood-raised sweetheart Pixie Lott will return to the festival with songs from her new album Young Foolish Happy. This record is yet to have been toured by the singer and so, for many fans, will be the first chance they’ve have had to hear her newest material live. Expect Pixie to give a feel-good show!

The Milk

V Festival 2012

Saturday 18th August to Sunday 19th August Hylands Park, Chelmsford Described by the Guardian as the new “British soul sensation”, The Milk are tipped for big things this year. The four fellas, home-grown in Chelmsford, are taking 60’s style RnB and rejuvenating it for the 21st century. Bringing their fresh new sound and swanky shoes to V Fest’ this summer, The Milk are not to be missed.

...there’s something for everyone... If you fancy a break from the music and feel like having a giggle, you can head over to the Glee Club Comedy Tent, where the likes of musicalcomedy genius Tim Minchin, cheeky chap Justin Moorehouse and award-winning joker Nathan Caton will surely have the tent in stitches. Introducing the Southern Comfort Juke Joint, a new addition V Festival opening its doors at Hylands Park this year. Described as the ultimate Southern House Party with “cocktail mixology” from Giles Looker, DJ sets all day long and a silent disco every night. The Strongbow and Carling tents are regular hot spots at V Fest and this year is no exception. An alternative stage for up-and-comers and DJs, these tents are a beacon of refreshment and good times. Open all weekend to quench your thirst and keep the party going. As if all of that wasn’t enough, you can amuse your inner-child on the fun fair rides, then, when the music has finished, take a seat in the area and enjoy the night time film screenings.

I’m Leddra Chapman, a singer and it’s my first column for RM, beginning to write on a blank page to some people would be quite daunting, yet I have my own opinions, my own views and experiences that I would like to share with you…

One of the questions I get asked a lot as an Artist is how I go about writing a song. It seems to be the part of my job that people find the most intriguing, and I find it interesting when talking to other artists and songwriters about their music, especially those who have had big hit records with what started as a little melody inside their heads. It’s always nice to hear stories from friends and peers about how they came up with their songs, and one of my favourites is told by my producer and good friend, Peter Vettese. He co-wrote the song, ‘Proud’ with Heather Small (M People). ‘Proud’ will no doubt be heard by the nation several times during this year’s Olympics, as it has been one of the anthems for the games since its huge success in 2000. It was even made the official anthem for the London 2012 Olympic bid, and was featured in the promotional video, seen by millions.

I think music plays a big part in the games, and many inspiring songs are used to accompany the highlights and record-breaking moments. I like the story of how it came into existence, because not only was it written so quickly, but it was also rejected when it was first heard by labels and TV bosses! “On the day we wrote ‘Proud’, Heather came to the threshold of my studio and upon being asked what kind of song she would like to write, she answered “I just want to write something that makes me feel proud”. No kidding!! Ten minutes later we had the chorus! The verses and bridge to chorus took longer as we were mindful not to be pontificating, judgmental or smug but by the end of the day it was written (and I had performed the choir parts). We submitted the song the following day for consideration for a TV advert but they hated it.

... James Morrison! Festival season is still upon us, and although Glastonbury isn’t gracing us with its presence this year there are still some amazing festivals to attend in August. V Festival is going to be one of the highlights this year as the likes of Snow Patrol, Ed Sheeran and The Stone Roses take to the stage. I was lucky enough to see James Morrison at Kew Gardens recently, and caught up with him backstage after the show. The performance was outstanding, so if any of you are attending V this year, he is a must-see, and he’s told me he’s very excited about playing!

www.rmmagazine.co.uk

I think this is inspiring, and more apt as this is the Olympic year. Peter produced my debut album, Telling Tales, as is the most talented person I have ever met as well as a great mentor. I often call him ‘Gandalf ’ as he has provided me with plenty of wisdom over the last few years ha-ha!

... The High Barn!

Leddra Loves...

56

Six months later the same company used Proud for the launch of their latest hatchback. Since then the song has made its own way in the world and has continued to make Heather and I very proud. Written with love and care.”

One of my favourite venues in Essex is the High Barn in Great Bardfield. I strongly recommend you check out some of their shows in August.

... Professional Music Technology! With stores all over the country and an incredible range of instruments & music equipment, PMT in Romford is, in my opinion, one of the best music shops in Essex.

Evoke night club invited RM down to the Pure House launch night to experience the brand new super club for ourselves. After reading about the opening line up and some of the features this amazing new club has to offer our expectations were high to say the least. On arriving early at Evoke Nightclub we were surprised to see a queue of people already waiting in anticipation, some of which had been queuing well over an hour just to be one the first to see the club after its £2.5 million redevelopment. We were shown to the ice bar, this is a great place to begin your night with a fresh cocktail or treat your friends to a flavoured vodka served in a glass made of ice. The bar atmosphere is much like the temperature, chilled, which is great news for all the style conscious clubbers as you don’t need a big jacket! Shortly after, the main club opened its doors with a fantastic light and sound demonstration showing where much of the money has been spent, the technology in this club would not like out of place on a multi million pound movie set and can not be found anywhere else in the UK! We were shown to our booth where we enjoyed tunes from some of the worlds most famous DJ’s – Mark Knight, Judge Jules, Danny Howard, Hoxton Whores Pique, Sonny Wharton and Ant Brooks. As a VIP guest we were also able to take the elevator to the Japanese ‘Koudo Lounge’ where we enjoyed, table service, fine champagne and undoubtedly the best seats in the house with a balcony overlooking the entire club. The staff were friendly and organized which is un-common for a new club we expected the odd mistake but nothing, truly a fantastic venue offering a unique clubbing experience. We urge you to go down and experience it for yourself. www.evokenightclub.com | @evokenightclub | 01245 492881

Friends of Izzy

charity event

On Saturday 21st RM were cordially invited to join Shirley Hume and Isabelle Kuna, at The Charter in Colchester for a night of entertainment. The night was set to be a show stopper with an array of acts hitting the stage for the charity event of the year. Shirley Hume began this charity in order of her cousins Granddaughter young Isabelle, a 5 year old little girl who suffers with Cerebral Palsy. Izzy’s dream is to one day have the chance to run, play and dance like every other child her age, and Shirley has made it her mission for this dream to come true.

Izzy has suffered Cerebral Palsy due to a traumatic premature birth, and is now in need of an operation to give her the opportunity to walk. Up until last year this operation was only available in the United States, but now Izzy has been accepted to have this life changing operation in The Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, by Dr Aquillina. Shirley along with many others have come together to ensure this operation goes ahead before Izzy reaches the age of 6. In order for this to happen the Charity will need to raise a whopping £35,000. The charity named ‘Friends of Izzy’ hosted a night that gathered a selection of stars and large enthusiastic crowd, ‘Music and Miracles’ hit the stage to raise awareness of the Charity that is set to help other children in need of operations and equipment along with support for the families. The night kicked off at 4pm with stars such as TOWIE’s Jessica Wright debuting her latest single, 2 Shoes,

The headliner act- Ronan Parke, Molly Rainford, Jai Mcdowall, New Bounce, Josh Dubovie, Jamie Affro, London Road, and Kat Price, Also joined by Essex Factor finalists- Mat Barden, Mike Hough and Alexa Goddard, and Jenifer Maahs. We are RM, sat back and enjoyed the show with all the acts bringing something unique and special to stage and all for a good cause. The energy in the room was powerful with people, dancing and singing along. All the preparation paid off as the night was a huge success, with many thanks to everyone who came and made a donation, Izzy is one step closer to getting that operations most wanted date! You are able to make a Donation at www.justgiving.com/ account/your-pages/friendsofizzy. And find out about other events that are being held right on your doorstep at their facebook page ‘Friends of Izzy’. So, like us at RM don’t just get touched by Izzy’s story, do your bit to help Shirley make her dreams come true! www.rmmagazine.co.uk
