EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
M
att Cardle is best known for winning last years X Factor, where he stole the nations heart after receiving 44.61% of the vote, winning us over with his rugged good looks, and incredible voice. His debut number one single “When We Collide” was released immediately after he won, and it sold 439,000 copies in its first week to become the UK Christmas number one. It remained in the number one spot for three consecutive weeks, becoming the second biggest selling single of 2010 with 815,000 copies. Having lived in Essex since the age of five, Matt was soon everyone’s favourite Essex Boy after receiving the most votes every week from week two! RM Magazine had a nice little chat with Matt to see what an incredible year 2010 was for him.
So you’re about to start your first tour, Letters, since winning the X Factor, tell us a little bit about what we should expect from it?
We’ll be doing a lot of new stuff from the album, and a few covers that we hope people will like. I’ve got a band with me this time, a bunch of mates I’ve known for a long time, so we’re really gonna rock out! I just hope everyone enjoys it!
How different musically is it from your X Factor tour?
It’s the complete opposite! I’m using all my own tracks that I have written or co-written with amazing people. It’s gonna be a great, great show and I just really hope people are going to want to see it live.
Your debut album has gone down a storm and you have co-written nearly all tracks on the album, where did you get your inspiration from? Anything, and everything really! Things like life experiences, and anything that gives me the spark to write really.
How did you find the experience of recording this album?
Just incredible! It was just great to have the freedom to write how I wanted to, and to work with the people I have been. It’s just been brilliant.
Did you feel a lot of pressure when releasing your own work? Were you nervous at all? Yeah definitely! I put a lot of extra pressure on myself, and there is always pressure when you write yourself but I’m really happy with the outcome.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Did Simon Cowell have a lot of input in your album? No, he let me go off and write how I wanted to and I thank him for that.
Considering you’ve been writing songs since you were a teenager, was this an album you’ve always dreamed of making? Absolutely yeah, I mean we wrote nearly forty
songs for the album and we chose our twelve so it was just such a great experience.
Have you found you’ve had more female interest?
Gary Barlow penned your single ‘Run for your Life’, how did it feel to have one of your songs written by such an established songwriter?
What do you think of the new judge’s line-up on the X Factor?
It was pretty humbling to be fair to have someone like that write a song for me. It just felt so great.
The fact that the public know you as the winner of the X Factor, do you feel that this has put any restrictions on the type of music you want to release as an artist?
Absolutely not, I’ve had the freedom to write the album the way I’ve wanted to and hopefully the public can see that this is me.
Do you think your musical style has changed since entering the X Factor?
Not really, this is the kind of album I would have written anyway. I have met some amazing people and I’m really happy with the way the songs have come out.
Would you consider collaborating with another artist? If so who?
I would love to work with Chris Martin of Coldplay. I think they’re one of the best bands in the world at the moment. He’s been such an inspiration.
Over 18 months ago you were gigging in pubs and bars, how does it feel now to be in the public eye? It’s an awesome transition! It’s not like I wasn’t writing before, but I just never got the chance to with the people I have until now.
How are you dealing with your new found fame?
It can be interesting at times, but you just have to crack on with it.
10
WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Yeah! All of a sudden, it’s so weird!
I think it’s great, everyone seems to be fitting in really well.
“I would love to work with Chris Martin of Coldplay. ” Are you still a fan of the show?
Yeah, I think it’s such a great show, and I think it’ll stay that way for however long it runs for.
Do you still keep in contact with any of the other contestants?
Yeah, Aiden Grimshaw is a great mate of mine. I see him all the time, he only lives 5 minutes down the road from me in London. And the guys from One Direction, I see them around a fair bit as well.
Would you do it all over again?
If this is how it’s all going to turn out, then yes!
Obviously you are a bit of an Essex boy, what’s your best experience of growing up in Essex?
Just being out in the countryside! I spent most of my youth down a hole, or up a tree.
Are you excited to be playing in your home county? I can’t wait to come back, and kick it off. It’s going to be brilliant!
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
So, what’s next for Matt Cardle? What’s your plan?
Just to have a really great tour that gets people wanting to come and see me play my music, and enjoy it. I hope the single does really well and I also hope that my album continues to do really well. That’s all I could hope for.
Matt’s album, Letters, was released back on October 14th, and reached number two in the charts! The first single “Run For Your Life” debuted at number 6 on the UK Top 40 Chart. Matt’s accompanying tour kicks off in February and you can catch him on 12th March 2012 at The Cliffs Pavilion, Southend -On-Sea, which can all be found on his personal website, www.mattcardlemusic.com

Polka Dot Mini Chain Bag £18 www.monsoon.co.uk
Wool Pencil Skirt by Marc Jacobs £850 www.net-a-porter.com

The reappearance of the polka dot this season has really introduced some fun into the winter months! With anything from big bold spots to micro dots in various colours, this is a versatile trend that you can adapt to your own personal preference. Polka dots work wonderfully in monochrome black and white, especially large circles. They look slick and smart yet still quirky – a perfect adaption to the normal black of the winter. Add some texture with sequins for a glam night effect or sewn on dots on casual knitwear. Stella McCartney exhibited an array of exquisite polka dot pieces, incorporating sheer material with a bodycon style and sewn on polka dots. Her pieces were ultra feminine, with bang on trend mid length hems. This trend takes inspiration from vintage pieces such as 1950s tea dresses, structured at the waist and flaring at the hips, these dresses often featured micro polka dots. If you want a subtler approach to this trend try injecting a small polka dot piece into your wardrobe. Try spotty tights with a simple black dress or a monochrome polka dot bag to liven up any outfit – night or day. Marc Jacobs is infamous for using spots in his collections. Own your very own piece of designer with this absolutely sensational pencil skirt by Marc Jacobs, available at ww.net-a-porter.com. The price tag is quite hefty but with Christmas coming why not drop some hints! For a subtle accessory try this polka dot mini bag by Monsoon. Perfect for a night out, this bag features textured spots and a lovely gold chain and clasp.

Scotch & Soda Jacket Blazer £240 www.houseoffraser.co.uk
Navy Cable Crew Jumper £36 www.burton.co.uk
For the Boys
Invest in a good quality jacket this season and it will see you through several winters. Jackets seem to be the preference for most men – preferring a statement jacket over a coat. With the vast array of colours, styles and lengths available there really is something for everyone. Jackets are easy to layer up in the colder days with chunky cable knit jumpers and cardigans. This crew neck piece with cable detail from Burton comes in several colours and has a perfect texture to it; personally I adore the navy version! At the moment there are wide selections of jackets available with removable pieces such as Gilets, making it even easier to layer up by removing the gilet for extra comfort. This lavish piece by Scotch and Soda available at House of Fraser brings a modern twist on the English Heritage trend which is huge for both men and women this season. It mixes quilted sleeves with a knit collar and a traditional blazer style base. It is a real stand out piece that combines several trends in one, meaning that it will last for many seasons. Double breasted jackets work wonderfully for work over a gorgeous suit and the plain black styles never go out of fashion. Paul Smith’s autumn/ winter collection displayed a wide variety of jackets in casual styles, mixing this up with tailored trousers and smart shoes.

We caught up with Danielle Bigaignon, one organiser of the EFW Team, to grill her about the show..... What was your main aim for EFW?
Essex Fashion Week prides itself on showcasing new talent and businesses in and around Essex and creating a platform for up and coming designers. We put the fun factor into fashion with entertainment on the catwalk and celebrate with a VIP after party. EFW aims to put Essex on the map for fashion!
What was involved in organising the event?
Dynasty
From the momentum of EFW S/S in March this year, we launched the A/W show in Marbella at the end of August with an exclusive rooftop terrace party. From then we have interviewed designers, liaised with our headline sponsors, organised the venue, arranged rehearsals, promoted the event, sold tickets - honestly, the list is endless! I won’t deny it is definitely hard work putting on such a large event!
How did you choose who to showcase?
EFW always likes to showcase a wide variety of high street to high end fashion designers and boutiques. We like to work with businesses who will also interest our target audience and appeal to the Essex demographic.
Francescas Boutiuqe Thomas Codd London
How did you feel the night went?
EFW A/W show went unbelievably well and the positive feedback and press is still coming in thick and fast! Even Carol McGiffin from Loose Women mentioned live on her show that she had a fabulous time with us! All our guests, celebrities, press, sponsors and team had a great time from the catwalk through to party time and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their support, including yourselves.
Whats next for EFW?

Efendi dry cleaners advises. When picking your outfits for the up coming party seasons here’s a few pointers to keep in mind. 1. If the smaller size to your chosen outfit is too small go for 1 size up. Taking in an outfit rather then letting out ensures a perfect fit for your body shape. 2. Never spray perfume directly onto the fabric. Always use stain free deodorants, there are plenty to choose from nowadays.

Carley was just fantastic and we loved the whole experience; what a fabulous show! Alongside that, we also enjoyed an amazing gig with Jessie J together. I am totally mesmerised by her voice and we had some really great girly times. Absolutely fantastic! Also, I’m very excited to tell you all that I finally got to do Bronagh Waugh’s nails (Cheryl Brady from Holloyoaks). She text to let me know that she would be attending Elton Johns ball, along with her fellow co star Rachel Shenton (Mitzee). I was really happy that she had asked me do her nails. I rushed around so much that my feet didn’t touch the ground once! I was fitting in new clients and rushing off to London’s Mayfair hotel, and well, I thought the Savoy was posh but I can’t make my mind up which one was better! My bags were whisked away before I new it, I felt like the celebrity! I was in total shock when Gemma Merna (Carmel McQueen from Hollyoaks) walked into the hotel room and my heart nearly stopped when she asked me to do her nails. a bit of my life. He also spotted the boy band, Blue, in the hotel lobby and found it amusing watching all the celebrity presence in the hotel. Also this month, I’ve been very lucky to have struck up a lovely friendship in one of my clients, Stacie Stewart. She travels from London to have her nails done by me and we now have a great friendship. She is a very inspirational person and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to take her to work with me. We took a trip to Jess Wright’s flat in Essex to give her some of my trademark nails! We all had a great chat and I hope Stacie enjoyed herself. It must have all felt very surreal for her to experience it all but Jess was so lovely and posed for a photo which Stacie took as a momentum. She also met Carley Stenson and it felt really great to be able to share my experiences which such a great girl.

guide the male
to grooming
Aftershave Balm The modern alternative to those stinging (and notvery-good-for-the-skin) aftershaves, aftershave balms come as gels or creams and are used to soothe, calm and moisturise the skin after shaving. Why? Shaving can be pretty tough on skin so adequate aftercare is essential, particularly if you’re prone to razor burn. Aftershave balms are much kinder to the skin than aftershave lotions and contain ingredients to cool the skin and reduce shaving rash. They also help heal any tiny nicks and cuts and moisturise the skin. When? Use your aftershave balm straight after shaving, especially on the neck where most irritation occurs. Toners Many men are strangers to toners but these light, clear lotions are godsends when it comes to removing excess oil, reducing shine and toning the skin. Why? A skin toner will help remove the excess oils that can cause clogged pores and blackheads. It’ll also help close the pores and refresh the skin, especially important if you’re susceptible to oily patches. When? After shaving, splash a little toner on the face or soak a cotton pad and wipe over problem areas. Since applying a toner is a great way of getting rid of the excess oil that can build up during the day, think about keeping one with you at work too. Baxter of California Herbal Mint Toner, £18.00
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Sunscreens These creams and sprays help limit the damage caused to the skin by the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. Why? According to dermatologists, up to 80% of wrinkles are caused by sun damage and that’s before you consider the added risks of skin cancer – a disease that claims the lives of more than a thousand men each year in the UK. When? Apply 20 minutes before skin is exposed to the sun and make sure the cream is properly applied. Go for a high SPF (sun protection factor) if you’re fair skinned, don’t skimp and massage the cream in until it completely disappears. If you’ve a lot of body hair try using a spray, which will give better coverage.

Facial Moisturisers Moisturisers - as the name suggests - replace lost moisture. But they do much more than that, conditioning the skin and keeping it young and healthy-looking. A good moisturiser is the ultimate grooming must-have. Why? Not only will a face moisturiser help protect skin from environmental aggressors and prevent it from flaking and feeling tight, it’ll also limit the formation of wrinkles too. And it’s not just people with dry skin who need a facial moisturiser – since oil and water are different things even greasy or acne-prone skin can be dehydrated. When? Use in the morning after shaving and at night after washing, applying over the entire face and neck. If necessary, keep some in your office drawer and apply a little during the day too, especially if you work in an air-conditioned building. Lab Series Skincare For Men Oil Control Daily Hydrator, £26.50

Facial Scrub An essential component of any man’s grooming routine, facial scrubs contain small ‘polishing’ particles or special enzymes which dislodge dead skin cells and help remove any ingrained dirt. Why? Not only does this ‘exfoliation’ leave skin soft and younger-looking, it also removes the gunk and grime that can lead to spots and soothes in-growing hairs When? Use two or three times a week in place of your facial wash. Nickel Super Clean Face Scrub, £16.00

Elemis Visible Brilliance Facial (lasting around 65 minutes) which helps combat ageing, stressed and slackened skin. Miniaturization levels of the skin are proven to increase by up to 61% and elasticity by 40% after just one treatment. Specialized microcirculatory massage techniques are combined with powerful formulations and the two phase Amino Active Mask to help smooth, sculpt and restore skin radiance. Along with the La Sultane de Saba Ayurvedic Treatment (a relaxing 110 minute treatment) The treatment starts with a spicy body scrub of almond, apricot, argan and ginger to gently exfoliate the skin. The body is then cocooned in an ayurvedic blend of shea butter and warm ayurvedic oil which is slowly drizzled from a shirodhara bowl onto the energy points over the body. The therapist will then massage your body with a Siamese compress filled with herbs and spices balancing your energy points and creating a feeling of wellness and tranquility. This treatment will leave you with a harmonious flow of energy and relaxation. All in all the day was fantastic, the people polite with the setting tranquil, what more could a Mum to 4 ask for on a deserved day off.

Mortgage Review

Over 7,500 Mortgage Deals now available Following last month’s decision by the Monetary Policy Committee to re-introduce their programme of Quantitative Easing (QE), the expectation is that we are unlikely to see further intervention until the effects of this can be assessed. As a consequence the base rate has remained unchanged and the level of new money injected into the economy through the purchase of assets including government bonds remains at £275bn. The Eurozone crisis continues without any real resolution on the horizon and appears to be deteriorating. Italy are now the main sovereign debt concern of the markets, although the proposed Greece bailout has yet to be ratified. In spite of all of the international bad news and continued weakness in consumer confidence in the UK, the mortgage market has remained remarkably resilient. Although overall new mortgage activity in October was down by around 10% compared to September, remortgage borrower numbers have increased by almost 9%. Mortgage product pricing remains at all time low levels in October, with Moneyfacts reporting the average 2 year fixed
WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK
rate as 4.22% and the average 5 year fixed rate has reduced further to 4.73%. This appears to have encouraged increasing numbers of remortgage borrowers to take advantage of current pricing. Overall, there was an increase in mortgage product numbers during October. Having reduced a little in September, they returned to levels similar to August. Brokers currently have access to around 7,500 deals, over 50% more products than in the same period last year. Mark Flavin is from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd. Christmas Pudding Ice-Cream 85g raisins, 85g sultanas, 85g pack dried cherries 100g fresh or frozen cranberries, 6 tbsp brandy, 2 tbsp dark muscovado sugar 2 cinnamon sticks , snapped in half, ¼ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg, ¼ tsp caraway seeds, 4 cloves, 600ml pot double cream 1 vanilla pod (split and seeds scraped out), 3 large egg yolks 100g golden caster sugar, oil , for greasing the bowl 6 ginger nut biscuits, broken into chunks, zest ½ lemon and ½ an orange 85g caster sugar, 2 tbsp brandy, 100g fresh or frozen cranberries
Mix all of the boozy fruit ingredients together in a bowl, then microwave on High for 3 mins. Stir, then leave to cool completely, ideally overnight. For the ice cream, put the spices in a saucepan and gently heat for 3 mins or so, stirring once or twice, until fragrant. Tip in the cream and vanilla seeds, and bring to the boil. Meanwhile, whisk the yolks and sugar together. Whisk the hot cream into the egg mix, then tip the mix into a clean pan and gently heat for 5-10 mins until it coats the back of a wooden spoon. Pour everything into a bowl or plastic container and leave to
cool completely. If possible, chill it overnight as this will infuse the ice cream with a stronger Christmassy spice flavour. Pass the mix through a sieve into another container, then freeze for 5 hrs, stirring in the frozen edges with a fork every hour until you have a smooth, thick mix. Oil a 1.4 or 1.2-litre pudding basin and line with cling film. Drain the boozy fruit in a sieve, mix the fruit with the ginger nuts and zests, then quickly stir into the ice cream. Tip into the basin, cover the surface with cling film, then freeze for at least 6 hrs. For the topping, put everything into a small pan, gently heat until the sugar dissolves, then simmer for 2 mins. Cool completely. To turn the pudding out, let it sit at room temperature for about 15 mins, then turn onto a plate. Ease the cling film away. Spoon the cranberries and syrup over to serve.
Wild Rice, Chestnut & Squash Stuffing 1 onion , finely chopped bottom half of 1 butternut squash , peeled and cut into small cubes 200g pack cooked chestnuts , chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 4 sage leaves, chopped plus extra sage leaves, to serve 200g mixed wild and basmati rice 500ml vegetable or chicken stock 25g Parmesan (optional) or vegetarian alternative, grated
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Tip the onion, squash and chestnuts into a roasting tin with the oil, chopped sage and seasoning, then toss well with your hands. Roast for 20 mins or until the edges of the squash start to tinge brown. If your oven is full, you can simply fry the lot together in a large frying pan. Add the rice and stir to coat it, then
tip the lot into a saucepan. Add the stock and stir well. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20-25 mins or until the rice is tender and the stock absorbed. Add cheese, if using, and tip into a baking dish. You can now cover and chill the stuffing for up to a day. To finish, heat grill to high, then cook until the top is browned and crisp and the stuffing is hot through.

ewly opened Vertigo Lounge, based in Hornchurch, boasts a truly unique dining and drinking experience, unrivalled within the local area. RM Magazine was invited down to sample the fantastic culinary selection on offer, and what a taste bud tingling time we had...
LIFESTYLE
The Venue:
Vertigo Lounge is a new three storey premium cafe / lounge bar with an alfresco roof terrace experience in Station Lane, Hornchurch which brings together lunch dates and classy cocktails like no other venue in the surrounding area. Having only been open a few months, Vertigo Lounge has received nothing but great feedback. The menu boasts an array of delicious lunchtime meals with a laid back atmosphere that enables you to forget about your day-to-day stresses and feel totally at ease. The décor has been designed around social interaction making sure the space gives the customers the best experience possible. The contemporary lounge area on the second floor is the perfect place to unwind and kick back.
The Food:
The menu offers a selection of delicious food but after a lot of decision making we opted for the Homemade Vegetable soup, which was recommended by our waitress. We sat with baited breath knowing this dish was going to be good, and we certainly wasn’t let down. The
taste and texture of the soup was divine and with us not being huge soup fans, we were definitely impressed. A perfect starter for any soup lover! With the bar raised high, we keenly anticipated our main courses, and yet again, we were far from disappointed. The presentation was of a high standard, as were the meals themselves.
Cooked to perfection, the steak just melted in our mouths... Having all ordered something different, we were able to see that the high benchmark of flavours was consistent throughout all four meals. We chose the Vertigo burger with homemade wedges and coleslaw, which was every burger lovers dream. The Vertigo fish and homemade chips was another main we chose and we all cleared the plate before you could say Vertigo! Our other mains consisted of Chicken and Pancetta Carbonara which was beautifully creamy and seared pepper steak with watercress salad. Cooked to perfection, the steak just melted in our mouths and was devoured by all! With so much to choose from, the other options on the menu all sounded just as good including Salmon and Cod Fish cakes or for those watching your waistline, there are plenty of salads to choose from. After filling ourselves to the brim, we decided that it’d simply be rude if we didn’t try the Danish Pastry selection on offer, and the incredible Chocolate and Orange Tarte. The Danishes would have gone perfectly with a coffee as an afternoon snack to accompany a catch up with friends. What’s more, all desserts are made on site daily so the menu is always changing.
The X-Factor:
In terms of cost, Vertigo Lounge is perfect for a lunchtime trip, cost around £20 a head for three courses, not including any drinks. Pixie Lott, 20: Singer
After answering an ad in Stage magazine to find the next singing sensation, this Essex based starlet has gone from strength to strength. With 3 Brit Award nominations in 2010 alongside her debut single ‘Mamma Do’ entering the charts at the top spot with over 50,000 sales, she has also carved herself out a role of pint size fashion guru becoming the face of Lipsy clothing range.
Jessie J, 23: Singer
Its hard to believe that Jessie J’s ‘Do it like a dude’ was only released in November 2010, she has seen such immense success in the past year that it feels like she has been around forever, in a good way of course! Her second single ‘Pricetag’ was released in January and saw her gain her 1st UK No1. 2011 has been a whirlwind year for Jessie J, she has been a staple at most festivals (even with her foot in a plaster cast following an accident in rehearsals for the Capital Radio Summertime Ball), with her biggest performance of the year being at the Glastonbury festival, not a bad gig to be asked to perform only 8 months after your debut single. Jessie is sure to be looking forward to 2012 with more singles and albums in the pipeline, along with her reality TV debut as a judge on the BBCs new talent show The Voice. If the next 12 months are anywhere nearly as successful as the last 12 then 2012 set to be another amazing year for this beautiful young lady.
Essex Top Stars
of 2011 Words By Alice Langley
W
e all live here so therefore we know what an amazing place Essex is, however to outsiders our fine country has been seen the butt of jokes for far too long. Well that is all about to change. The past few years has seen Essex well and truly put on the map. We have 2012 Olympic Venues, a BAFTA winning TV show, copious amounts of talented sports stars, No1 charting musicians and more ‘self-made’ successful business people than any other county. With yet another successful year for Essex drawing to a close, what better time to take a look at our red hot ‘rising and shining stars’, all aged under 30. WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK 47

Alex Dowsett, 23: Sportsman Maldon born Alex has had his best season to date in 2011. This year Team Sky cycling specialist not only won the time-trial stage of this years Tour of Britain in September but he is also making great strides towards being selected for the 2012 GB Olympic cycling team. This is one determined young man who is sure to be a ‘one to watch’ for the future.
Michelle Dockery, 29: Actress The past few years have seen Michelle explode into the public eye thanks to her role as Lady Mary Crawley in ITV period drama Downtown Abbey. Since first appearing in series one last year her career has gone from strength to strength and is currently staring in series two. Raised in Essex, attending The Chadwell Heath Foundation School, this Essex beauty has worked hard to get where she is today and, by all accounts, is enjoying every minute. Downtown is quickly becoming a Sunday night institution, so I foresee this local lass gracing a screen for many years to come..
Alistair Cook, 26: Cricketer
Although not born here, this adopted Essex boy has won our hearts. After making his debut Essex CC in 2003 his career went from strength to strength and earned him his first call up to the England Test side in 2006 aged only 21. Since then he has become the youngest player to reach 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 Test runs and is also the only Englishman to score seven Test centuries before his 23rd birthday. Away from cricket he is a successful newspaper columnist for The Telegraph and The Metro and has also posed nude alongside fellow team mates for the Everyman campaign to raise awareness for testicular cancer. He was awarded an MBE in the 2011 birthday honours list.

Joe Thomas, 28: Actor
Most famous for his role as Simon Cooper, the awkward teenager from the award winning TV show, and film, The Inbetweeners, this is one talented Essex boy. Chelmsford born and bread, educated at King Edward VI Grammar School before heading off to Cambridge, he can still be seen around town as his parents are still local to the area.
Freddie Sears, 21, Footballer
Born in Hornchurch, this local boy singed for West Ham at the tender age of 11 while studying at Sanders Drapers School. In 2008, aged just 18, he made his first team debut as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers coming on the 75th minute and scoring the winning goal, and his first ever senior goal, a mere 5 minutes later. He was sent out on loan during 2009 and 2010 to Crystal Palace, Coventry and Scunthorpe but marked his return to the West Ham first team with a fantastic start to 2011 scoring his second senior goal on New Years Day. With West Ham riding high this season in the Championship we should soon be seeing Freddie back in the Premiership where he belongs.
Amy Childs, 21: Reality TV Star
You’d have to go a long way to find someone who had not heard of this young lady. Yet only 2 years ago she was an unknown beautician from Brentwood trying to become a model. This was of course before she joined the cast of The Only Way Is Essex and introduced the world to the ‘Vajazzle’. Amy left the show after the end of series two to allow her to participate in Channel 5’s 1st series of Celebrity Big Brother, finishing 4th. Since then her career has gone strength to strength, she has her own column in Now Magazine, a fashion segment on ITV’s This Morning, and is currently filming footage for her own show, All about Amy. This is one young lady with the world at her feet.
Olly Murs, 27, Singer
Runner –up of XFactor 2009, Olly is one of the few true success stories of the TV Talent show. His first single ‘Please don’t let me go’ debuted at No1 in the UK singles chart in September 2010 and since then this cheeky Essex Lads success has known no limits. 2011 has been a great year for Olly, seeing him not only perform in his home county at the Chelmsford V Festival, which he described as ‘a dream come true’ and gain his second UK No1 for his single ‘Heart Skips a Beat’, but also being cast as a presenter for this years Xtra Factor on ITV2. 2012 is set to be just as explosive for this Essex success, and if he keeps doing all this with such a happy smile on his face, I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing him well.

ot content with good old Blighty for your yuletide plans? Take a look at our pick of the best Christmas getaway destinations for this December, whether you want to get adventurous, get your party on, or just get out of your usual routine...
CHRISTMAS Getaways Words By Monique Hall
Mauritius
For the sun worshipper...
This is certainly the place for you if you’re looking to leave England’s freezing cold temperatures behind and head for crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. The island celebrates Christmas in many different ways due to its multi-ethnical society. If you’re not feeling for a traditional Christmas dinner, a whole range of scrumptious food is available including Indian, Chinese, French, British and Creole. There’s plenty to do if you get bored of opening presents or singing Christmas carols, with December to March being the best holiday season for diving, as the sea is at its clearest.

Cancun
For the party animal...
If you like to experience the traditions of Christmas but just as equally like to hit the egg nog and dancing pretty hard, then Cancun could be the perfect getaway for you. Located on the northeast coast of the Quintana Roo state in Southern Mexico, this city is a great place to get festive whilst having a lot of other fun at the same time too, most notably because of Cancun’s world renowned nightlife. Cancun locals celebrate Christmas with ‘Las Posadas’, which are celebrated for nine days beginning on the 16th until the 25th December, and are symbolic of Mary and Joseph looking for shelter on the night that Jesus was born. They are usually celebrated with candlelit processions, traditional songs, and the breaking of a ‘piñata’ filled with sweets. Visitors and locals are spoilt for choice in terms of things to do on Christmas Eve; whether you just want a quiet drink or a full-blown night out, Cancun has some of the best nightclubs in the world to celebrate winter festivities. One of the most renowned is The City nightclub, one of the largest entertainment centres in Latin America. The City promises to bring the best live acts and DJ’s to it’s clubbers, with appearances at the club including the likes of Fergie, Ludacris, Flo Rida, 50 Cent, Paul Van Dyk, Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton and many more.
New York South Africa
For the adventure lover...
South Africa has an abundance of appeal for those wanting to catch some rays and escape the winter blues; offering high temperatures, fantastic wildlife, and incredible landscapes, it’s a natural haven for anyone wanting an extra special Christmas. It’s a great place to go if you want a warm trip minus the serious jetlag as it’s basically the same time zone as the UK. One of South Africa’s highlights definitely has to be going on safari – something which would prove a far cry from traditional Christmas activities! You could spend your Christmas day in the company of lions, buffalo and elephants – how’s that for a crimbo party?!
For the busy bodies...
New York is still one of the most captivating cities in the world, all bright lights and busy sounds. No where does Christmas quite like New York; with flight prices still relatively low over December, you too could have a fairytale of New York without breaking the bank. It’s a great destination for those who like to keep busy over the Christmas period, and one of the best for shopping. Head to the Rockefeller Center for a spin on the ice skating rink, a famed tradition in the big apple. If you’re not confident enough to navigate around the rink yourself you can book private lessons. Also don’t miss out on the Rockefeller’s Christmas tree, one of the biggest Christmas highlights in New York. The tree has stood as a prominent symbol of Christmas in New York for 75 years, boasting 30,000 lights. The annual tree lighting ceremony attracts thousands of tourists each year. A visit to Macy’s is a must, located on 34th street, the iconic setting of Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street. Macy’s Santaland gives festive holiday makers a chance to meet the big guy himself, after passing through an enchanted forest and then finally reaching Santa’s home, where every child that visits receives a gift specially chosen by Santa Claus.

This year’s Challenge attracted a larger entry list than the inaugural event, including hybrids and fuel cell models as well as highly efficient diesel cars such as the Passat BlueMotion. The
The car features battery regeneration that activates when the accelerator is released... Golf was named the Most Energy Efficient Regular Car (Prototype) class. Powered by lithium-ion batteries, the Golf Blue-e-Motion has an electric motor with a peak power output of 115 PS and a range of around 100 miles in normal conditions. It can reach a top speed of 86 mph and accelerate from rest to 62 mph in 11.8 seconds.
took part in this year’s event. The second vehicle, which won the inaugural event last year, was the first car away from the start and was once again driven by Jim Holder, editor of Autocar magazine, and this time co-driven by Volkswagen engineer Eike Feldhusen. The third Volkswagen entry, a production Passat BlueMotion, one of the most efficient and lowest-polluting internal combustion engined vehicles on sale today, was driven by motoring journalist Richard Aucock and Edd China, best known for his part in TV’s Wheeler Dealers, and the creator of the road-legal motorised sofa. The Passat BlueMotion is powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine producing 105 PS and employs a series of aerodynamic and mechanical changes to maximise the efficiency
of the engine, giving it a combined fuel economy of 68.9 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 109 g/km. On arrival in London, the Golf Blue-eMotions had their data recorders removed by the RAC scrutineers and then joined the Passat BlueMotion plus all the other competing vehicles for a display in the centre of London as part of the inaugural Regent Street Motor Show. A production version of the Golf Blue-eMotion is planned to be introduced to the market in late 2013. The Passat BlueMotion can be purchased now.
For more information on the Volkswagen range visitwww.volkswagen.co.uk.
The car features battery regeneration that can activate when the accelerator is released and during the initial travel of the brake pedal. This reduces the amount of energy that would otherwise be wasted during driving. Despite its unconventional motive power the Golf Blue-e-Motion appears like any other Golf with space for five adults and a slightly reduced boot volume of 279 litres. The class-winning vehicle was piloted by Volkswagen engineer Folko Rohde, aided by co-driver Fabienne Kleinert, and is one of two Golf Blue-e-Motion models that

Philippic
BEATBOX
P
hil Cotter, better known as Philippic Beatbox started beat boxing from the young age of 13, and now he is one of the newest, and biggest talents to come out of Essex.
Spending a lot of time and effort practising, Philippic gradually built up a vast sound base and unique flow that wows crowds everwhere. He started off just showing off his incredible talent at his friends parties and then ventured into talent shows, where he recently came 3rd in this years Essex Got Talent. Philippic shows off a well timed mash up of intricate beat patterns and on-point instrument sounds, all from the mouth. Specialising in covers and freestyles ranging in all genres of music, which lead to his first major performance at a Pure Temptation club night on the Greek island of Kos with MC Creed and well known, DJ and producer, Jaimeson. Philippic started getting involved with music production and experimenting with mixing and producing beat box/midi tracks. This lead to him being able to work with a number of artists in the UK and the USA. Since then Philippic has became involved in projects with other beat boxers, singer/song writers and musicians. He is now also involved
in working with artists on creating acoustic tracks with a twist.Philippic has taken beat boxing to a whole new level, and has opened up into the comedy circuit as a special act, which has never previously been done before. Not only did this give Philippic more stage time, but it lead to a new audience for him and in turn bigger events. He has now opened up for some top names on the circuit including Celebrity Juices Rufus Hound, Toju from Balls of Steel and Def Comedy Jam star Will E Robo! Philippic has also performed at incredible venues such as Hammersmith Apollo, Islington o2 academy, and the newly opened Westfields Shopping Centre. He is now getting regular spots at various clubs around Essex and London, where he never fails to get the crowd going.
The fan base is growing thick and fast and Philippic is always in demand as a special guest performer at various shows, so you best watch out‌
