A L W AY S H O P E She won our hearts with her beautiful voice and cheeky character and she has just had a whirlwind time on Britiain’s Got Talent. and people would love it wherever I sang. David Walliams is lovely as well as being really funny. Amanda Holden is really nice too and she said I was a star in the making. Simon was impressed with my vocal abilities and liked my personality. Talk us through the process you went through to get to the semi finals? Well, after the initial audition that was shown on TV, it was a real waiting game as they had to make their decisions as to who they would put through to the live shows, so I really didn’t know until the week before. It was the best news ever as it could have gone either way. What did it feel like when you were told you had made it through to the semi finals? Words cant describe it! This was the 5th time I had auditioned for BGT so I felt like I had won the lottery. What made you decide to go on the show? As I said previously, I had auditioned 4 times before and because of my age I was never old enough for the X Factor, so I just thought I’d give it another try. So, you’ve just had a whirlwind time on BGT, what was that experience like for you? It was one of the best experiences. It was a total rollercoaster of emotions but I feel so lucky to have got as far as I did. There were about 70,000 people who auditioned and then it was down to the last 45 who made it to the live shows, so what better platform to show what you can do. Were you nervous going on stage for the audition? I felt a mixture of emotions. I was excited but felt a bit nervous just before I went on, but that can be a good thing as the adrenaline kicks in and can help with your performance. Plus, I have had quite a lot of experience already. When I was 14yrs old I sang a solo at The Royal Albert Hall and recently I sang at Wembley Arena. What did you think of the judges? They were all really lovely, but obviously the one I wanted to impress the most was Simon because he is the one I have watched the most on BGT and X Factor and what he says is normally the most honest. Alisha Dixon gave me amazing feedback, although you didn’t see it all on TV as it had been edited. She said my voice was world-class

10 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

You are only 16. Do you think that it too young to get thrust into the limelight? No not for me, as I have already done quite a lot already. When I was 13yrs old I travelled up to Sheffield and worked with producer Eliot Kennedy who has won a grammy and wrote and produced for the Spice Girls and many more. He is also best mates with Gary Barlow and worked on the X Factor last year. It was there I recorded the first song I wrote called ‘Goodbye’ and a song he wrote called ‘When Love Breaks Down’ . When I was 15 I co-wrote a song called ‘Cold’ and made my first music video. Following on from that a producer named Karl Twigg, who I had recorded some songs with, showed the video to Pete Waterman. I went to his studio and did some writing and recordings. I met Pete about six times and he was so passionate about his music. He taught me a lot and gave me lots of advice; such a brilliant man. Because of all these experiences I know what the music industry is like. It is very tough and you’re not always going to be liked by everyone; you really do have to be quite thick skinned, so for me it wasn’t a problem. I don’t think this would apply to everyone, regardless of age is it just depends on

your personality and that you go in with your eyes wide open.

with me to queue up for hours in all weather, I would never have done it.

How has the show affected you daily life? People have been very supportive and if I am out they come up to me and say the loveliest things, or sometimes ask to have their picture taken with me, which I don’t mind at all.

My sister Grace, who is my twin has always been a huge support and when I did my audition you could hear her shouting at the top of her voice ‘Come on Hope’, which I love as she does it whenever I perform. The rest of my family like my Grandma and Grandad are so proud, and my closest friends are just the best.

Is singing what you have always wanted to do? Yes, most definitely. I sang along to the radio from about the age of two, but I didn’t get into it seriously until the age of 11. That’s when I started having vocal lessons. Who are your role models? I have quite a few. Beyonce, Adele, Jennifer Hudson and Trey Songz Which singer’s career would you most like to emulate? That’s a hard one as the above singers are all successful in their own right, so I guess I would have to say that being as successful as any of those would be brilliant. What do your family and friends think of your performance on BGT? They were so proud of me and without their support, and the fact that my mum has always gone

My sister Grace who is my twin has always been a huge support and when I did my audition you could hear her shouting at the top of her voice ‘Come on Hope’ which I love as she does it whenever I perform.

You are a local Essex girl, what do you most like about living in Essex? It’s just the best place to be. Everyone has great banter and I love the fact that even the boys take pride in the way they look.

What is the next step for you? Well I just have to hope that through my exposure on BGT I get signed by someone. My manager is Jonathan Shalit, so with any luck he will find something for me. I have started writing again and have nearly finished a love song which I will record when I am happy with it. I am appearing on 3rd June for the diamond Jubilee celebrations in Romford and then travelling to Plymouth 9th June to raise money for a charity called Scope, where there are some other people that have been on X Factor and BGT. I have a few gigs lined up for the summer. So, yeah, just watch this space............ For more information email: hopemusic@hotmail.co.uk

Where are your favourite places to go in Essex? Ah that would be telling! Lets just say I probably wasn’t old enough to have been there! Mind you, that has stopped after being on BGT as they might know my age now! What are your top tips for looking and feeling good? I won’t go out the house unless I have my hair extensions in, false eyelashes on and a little fake tan. That makes me sound really fake, but I think most of us girls are the same. Can you see yourself being a worldwide recording artist? I would love that to happen. That is my dream! I write songs and play piano as well, so to have an album with some of my material on it would be a major achievment.

Lisa

L J Couture We first met the lovely Lisa Hendy of L J Couture at Essex Fashion Week SS12 where we were wowed by her designs and inspired by her story. We caught up with her to find out what makes L J Couture unique, how and why she started the label and also what we can expect from L J Couture in the future.

14 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

fashion Jessica

You mentioned that all your dresses are made to order. Why is this different from ordering off the rail?

Like many girls, on a special occasion we want to feel just that; special, unique, glamorous. Our made to order service, ensures that your dress is one of a kind and personal to you.

How would I order my dress? Do I come to your studio?

All our orders are conveniently placed online at www.ljcouture.co.uk and are made in just 6-8 weeks. In the future, we will branch out and supply to boutiques, and also have our own L J Couture Boutique, so watch this space!

How much would an average dress cost?

L J Couture dresses range from £190 - £290 for a made to your measurements, fully boned, lined and embellished dress.

It all started when I had a special event to attend and went on the hunt for the ‘perfect dress’. After trying on what seemed like a hundred dresses that didn’t fit perfectly and weren’t the right colour or style, it dawned on me that I was in-between sizes and very fussy! That’s when the light bulb moment happened. Having studied art at school and college and always having a great interest in fashion designing, I took pencil to paper to perfect dress. I wore my dress to the special event and the compliments I received that night left me speechless. I wanted other girls to feel the same. Their compliments gave me the inspiration to start L J Couture.

So what’s different about L J Couture. What makes you unique? L J Couture is a company that not only offers gorgeous, crystal encrusted dresses available in over 90 colours, but also a made to measure and a bespoke service. With our bespoke service, you have the ability to design your own dress, have it made my L J Couture, and have it named after you. This service is perfect if, like me, you had a special event to attend and knew what type of dress you wanted to wear but just couldn’t find what you wanted in the shops. Once made, your design may even be sold on the website, so you too can be a fashion influencer!

L J Couture is a company that offers a made to measure and a bespoke service.

What inspired you to start L J Couture?

What advice would you have for someone looking to start their own label?

What I have learnt is that anything is possible. Whether you want to launch your own fashion label or start your own business, if you believe in your work and have the confidence in your product, then you go for it. One thing I will say is be practical and well prepared. It may not work out but if you don’t try these things, you will never know. The only person that ever holds you back in life is yourself.

What’s next for LJ Couture?

The website www.ljcouture.co.uk is in production at the moment and we hope to have our own Boutique next year. We also hope to build up our fan base on Twitter, so make sure you follow us @lj_Couture. And finally, we will be having an amazing Launch Party on the 21st of July at the prestigious Luxe Bar in Loughton. So make sure you join us for a free goodie bag and a glass of champagne! Hope to see you there! L J Couture: www.ljcouture.co.uk Email us at: customerservice@ljcouture.co.uk Follow us @lj_couture Willow

Has starting your own label been your dream from a young age?

Yes, most definitely. I was one of those 80s children who played with Fashion Wheel and always got colouring pencils and a pad for Christmas! I always knew I wanted to be involved in the fashion industry, however, I did not follow the path to dress designing in the "normal way". Maryanne I studied Art at school and sixth form, however, once I had finished sixth form, my study ended and my big break never came. Forward 8 years and my CV consisted of working for companies as an Administrator, PA and Receptionist, but my passion for fashion and knowledge of the subject always existed. Then thankfully, that frustrating shopping experience led me back to my designing ambition.

TOWIE: An Alternative Route To Success

Heavily criticised for their sunless glow and painted faces, the TOWIE girls often find themselves with a lot to answer for. But I ask their critics: is it not time to acknowledge these girls’ alternative route to success? Minnies Boutique is at the forefront of the TOWIE fashion agenda with over 130,000 followers on Twitter. At only twenty one and twenty two years of age, Sam and Billie Faiers cannot be doubted as an example to young girls of what can be achieved with determination when it comes to their boutique’s success. Every weekend Brentwood is inundated with young girls that have travelled from afar, solely with one desire- to take a peek at some of the clothes worn my their favourite reality stars. Who could underestimate Amy Childs as an established ‘brand’ when it comes to beauty and fashion? Her collection at Essex Fashion Week was eagerly anticipated by the crowd and greeted with immeasurable support from TOWIE fans everywhere. Her bubbly persona and infamous pout has given her a promising future in the world of fashion that university graduates could only be envious of.

16 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Like her co-stars, Amy demonstrates success is in reality attainable, Oxbridge degree non-essential. And finally, critics of these girls’ seemingly ‘easy route’ to fame and stardom should ask themselves if they too could find the strength to survive the constant body criticism and personal attacks that twenty five year old Lauren Goodger has experienced as a result of her appearance on the show. She has defended herself against the bullies solely through her entrepreneurial skills alone, being the proud face of the nation’s new favourite fake tan and her own clothing line. What is certain is that TOWIE’s female stars have achieved success in ways that many young girls, with persistence and passion, can ultimately relate to.

Collaborations between high-end designers and high-street brands are nothing new. In fact, we barely even bat an eyelid anymore, at the throngs of fans camping outside stores at 5am to get the first look-in. Versace for H & M was perhaps the most hyped-up collection yet, but, we have to ask ourselves, do they live up to the media attention they receive? Luckily for you, we have done all the legwork to find the best pieces from the cream of the collaboration crop this year. Form an orderly queue, ladies.

Choose the right product

eye eye CAPTAIN Dark circles? Eye bags? Crow’s feet? Sort out all your eye issues with these tips and tricks from www.mankind.com resident Grooming Ed, Lee Kynaston. 26 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Reckon you don’t need an eye cream and can just use your normal moisturiser instead? Bad idea! At just 0.5mm thick, the skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body, and so requires specially formulated products that won’t irritate or overload it. Sure, eye creams & gels might be a little more pricey than your average moisturiser, but that’s because they’re potent, highly concentrated & specially formulated products. The question is which do you choose? Well, roughly speaking both creams and gels are great for wrinkles, dark circles and for reducing the appearance of eye bags, but gels like Nickel’s Attention Les Yeux (Firming Eye Gel) 20ml, and Decleor Men Essentials Eye Contour Energiser Gel 15ml are especially good for the latter, because they tend to be lighter and more cooling. If wrinkles are your main problem try one of the antiageing eye creams available like Biotherm Homme Force Supreme Total Anti-Ageing Eye Care 15ml, or REN Lipovector Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream 15ml. These wrinkle-busters are especially designed to target wrinkles and prevent the formation of future fine lines.

Decleor Eye Contour Energiser Gel For Men 15ml £29.99

REN Lipovector Smoothing Eye Contour Cream 15ml £26 Nickel’s Attention Les Yeux (Firming Eye Gel) 20ml,

Products like Elemis Time Defence Eye Reviver 15ml, and Anthony Logistics Eye Cream can do wonders for puffiness, dark circles and fine lines, but according to Noella Gabriel, Director of Treatment and Product Development at Elemis HQ, how you apply is crucial. Smother the area with too much product and you can cause irritation and pufiness – the very things you want to avoid. To prevent this she suggests using a tiny amount (a blob the size of a grain of rice should do both eyes) and applying with your ring finger. “This finger has the lightest touch so it’s perfect for applying eye products,” she says. Then gently tap the cream or gel around the eye socket. Don’t apply too close to the eye itself, and don’t rub or you’ll pull the delicate skin around the eyes. The tapping motion is benefical because it also helps drain away toxins from the eye area.

Try keeping your eye cream in the fridge or on a cold windowsill. If it’s chilled it’ll help constrict the blood vessels under the eye, instantly helping reduce any puffiness.

Deal with those dark circles... Look like you’ve just gone five rounds with Joe Calzaghe? Don’t worry, sort your dark circles with these eye essentials. Medik8 Dark Circles 15ml A professional strength circlefading formula makes this acclaimed treatment undereye darkness a must have. Improves microcirculation and also works on reducing puffiness too. 15ml £28

Anthony Logistics 21gm £28

Elemis Eye Reviver 15ml £35.80

Be careful how you apply

Step 2:

And a few other things you can do…

While eye creams and gels are your best friends when it comes to sorting out those annoying ‘ocular issues’, there are a few other steps you can take to keep your eyes and the skin around them in tip top condition: Cut down on the beer and crisps: According to skincare expert Ole Henriksen both alcohol and salt are two of the main causes of eye bags. Getting your beauty kip will help too!

Get your 5-a-day: Vitamin A is crucial to overall eye health, so stock up on veg like red peppers, carrots and spinach. Oh, and don’t forget that all-important yearly eye check-up too.

Murad Essential C Eye Cream SPF15 15ml A great all-round eye cream, this also contains light-reflecting particles to diminish the appearance of dark circles, while a built-in sunscreen helps guard against wrinkles and sun damage. 15ml £57

Peter Thomas Roth Power K Eye Rescue 15g

This premium eye treatment contains a raft of antioxidants including Co enzyme Q-10 and vitamin K - an ingredient long-associated with dark circle-busting properties. 15g £75

Entering the Buy to Let Market Paul Flavin from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd comments on entering the Buy to Let market. Buy to Let – should I or shouldn’t I? In the recent economic climate many potential investors question whether to enter the Buy to Let market. When house prices first started to fall, many experts warned that Buy to Let investors might run scared, potentially prompting a house price crash. This didn’t happen – in fact the Buy to Let market appears to be booming, benefiting from larger numbers of people renting and cheaper property prices. The National Landlords Association (NLA) is the representative body for private-residential landlords across the UK and represents almost 20,000 individual landlords. Increasing numbers of people are attracted to renting, as a simpler, more flexible alternative to home ownership. Gone is the view that renting is the only option for those who can’t afford to get on the property ladder. Nowadays there are property savvy renters who prefer not having to worry about home repairs or concerns about making ends meet with potentially volatile interest rates. Buy to Let loans are based on the property’s value and its rental potential and although the market for Buy to Let Mortgages is not as good as it once was, there are still deals available. Q. Is it the right time? A. Despite uncertainties over the future of the Property Market in the UK, the Buy to Let sector is growing. The three key reasons for an increase are: Deposit requirements and restricted availability of residential mortgages

Q. What benefits are there to becoming a landlord? A. Now may not be a good time to sell so why not turn it around and let your property out, there are a number of potential benefits, here are some key ones: R5 Long term investment R5 A steady source of income, depending on where your property is and rental charges R5 Considerable tax advantages (tax breaks offered to landlords who rent out their property Q. Should I self manage or get a letting agent to manage? A. There are pros and cons of self managing. Self managing allows you to keep your variable costs down; if you find tenants and manage the property yourself you could save money. Bearing this in mind you will need to find suitable tenants, draft up a tenancy agreement, ensure it’s signed properly, and check references. In addition to doing all this you will need to be first in line for any maintenance problems. However, if a letting agent managed your property it will save you all the hassle of running around, as the agency will do all the leg -work on your behalf. Helpful Information Landlord Associations Landlord Associations are a good place to start as the advice and information will be invaluable. Three of the more well known Landlord Associations to join are:

National Federation of Residential Landlords National Landlords Association Residential Landlords Association Buy to Let Mortgages Buy to Let mortgages are specifically designed for investors to borrow money to purchase property in the private rented sector in order to let it out to tenants. Typically the interest rates that are offered on Buy to Let mortgages will be slightly higher than residential mortgage rates, and the fees charged in connection with these mortgages will also be higher. This is due to the perception amongst banks and other lending institutions that Buy to Let mortgages represent a greater risk. It is therefore essential that potential investors seek independent mortgage advice to ensure they secure the most suitable deal for their circumstances. For further information on Buy to Let mortgages, contact Paul Flavin Miura Financial Solutions Ltd on 01702 423900. Your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. There is no guarantee that it will be possible to arrange continuous letting of the property, nor that rental income will be sufficient to meet the cost of the mortgage. There will be a fee for mortgage advice. The actual amount you pay will depend upon your circumstances. The fee is up to 1%, but a typical fee is ÂŁ295. MAB 3668

Introducing...

Chef Mark Peters

of Just Imagine Foods

Mark, tell us a little about yourself and the journey you have been on?

Starting my own company has always been a dream, but never felt right until recently. I wanted the experience of not just cooking but life as well to start Just Imagine Foods. I wanted it to be different, high quality food without compromise. My journey began through world famous Michelin starred restaurants and hotels. Knocking on famous Chef ’s doors just to work an evening for the experience became a great way of learning from great Chefs. The rest... as they say is history, yet after all these years I still have the desire and passion to achieve greater things.

Why a Chef ? Is this something you wanted to be from a young age?

We have great pleasure in introducing you to the newest member of the RM Team, Chef Mark Peters. He is our kitchen guru who will be bringing you some amazing recipes, tips and hints on how to create Michelin star standard food at pocket friendly prices! Let’s get to know him a little better … 36 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Making peppermint creams with my dear Nan at an early age is my first culinary memory (if that counts!) Since studying at college and venturing into the world of restaurants in London, it became clear that this was my life. Cooking is an art. The constant strive for perfection that chefs go to is amazing. The rewards at the end of serving customers are well worth the sweat and tears!

What are your top 5 kitchen essentials?

The humble tasting spoon is a must along with my global knife, which I seem to use for absolutely everything! Cleanliness and a good use of space is essential to keep both the kitchen and my mind clear. A healthy stock of fresh seasonal ingredients is hugely important in my mind and makes all the difference. And last, but by no means least, music - providing inspiration for when I am cooking.

What can we expect from your monthly recipes? Fresh, seasonal, sustainable, achievable dishes that can suit every pocket. A picture paints a thousand

words and with the photos taken by professional photographer Natasha Lees, hopefully they will inspire as well as guide. That’s what cooking is all about, adapting and making the dish yours. There will also be alternatives, chef ’s tips and perhaps a bit of banter!!

What is your ethos, what drives you as a Chef?

Ultimately, stay true to yourself and your imagination. If you have that, anything is possible. I am driven by the endless quest for perfection.

Tell me more about Just Imagine Foods?

‘Just Imagine’ has evolved since late last year and was the title of a blog of mine. I feel boundaries in life, as well as in business, are often created by oneself. I hope I have knocked my ‘brick wall’ of boundaries down to create a forward thinking service! Just Imagine Foods is a bespoke, personal Chef service that will provide a memorable experience for clients. I cook for both private and corporate clients in London and the South East. I cook for special events and intimate meals at clients home or a chosen venue. I also carry out consultancy work at hotels and restaurants, both in a chef capacity and to improve their businesses financially.

If a reader wants to ask questions or book your services, how would they do this?

You can easily contact me via email for any queries about either the dish of the month or to find out more about how I can help you with my services.

2 x 200g British Lamb Rumps 2 handfuls of fresh hay 50g Dried lavender stalks with flowers 10 ml Extra Virgin Olive oil Maldon Seasalt Ground black pepper

Rump of British Lamb smoked over Hay & Lavender June is a wonderful month for British Lamb, usually at its most tender. This recipe imparts a beautiful yet subtle flavour and is so easy to prepare…

Trim the lamb rump of any excess fat, season and sprinkle dried lavender flowers over the meat. Sear briefly in a hot pan with olive oil. This will keep the juices in and keep the meat succulent. Remove and cool down. Take the hay and wash in cold water. Let it soak up the water and form into a solid pack.

Place hay in the bottom of a pan / wok. Layer the lavender stalks on top. Using a cooking rack, place the lamb on top (as pictured) Cover with a lid and place on a high heat for 12- 15 minutes or until the lamb is pink. Remove from the heat and rest in the pan for a further 5 minutes. Slice thinly when serving. Serving suggestions – I love the combination of olive oil potato puree, peeled vibrant broad beans and fresh carrots and a light Jus. Try not to let the lamb be overpowered by other flavours. Keep it simple…and enjoy!

Roadster

lifestyle

38 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

The critically acclaimed MINI family is expanding again. Hot on the wheels of the stunning Coupé comes the launch of the sixth unique model in the line-up, the eagerly anticipated and all-new MINI Roadster. MINI continues to rewrite the rulebook; this is the first open-topped two-seater in the company’s history. The cutting-edge design is typically MINI – an authentic re-interpretation of a classic motoring concept. This latest model offers the fun of driving a taut-handling roadster, with all the character of MINI. And being built at Plant Oxford means it can justifiably claim to be a spiritual successor to the traditional British roadsters of old.

lifestyle

The cutting-edge design is typically MINI – an authentic reinterpretation of a classic motoring concept

The semi-automatic operation of the tailored soft-top roof means rapid opening and closing, and it doesn’t affect the MINI Roadster’s practicality in any way. This is a versatile two-seater with a stowage area behind the driver and passenger seats, generous 240-litre luggage area and through-loading system.

The MINI Roadster is the first premium model of its kind in the small car segment, offering buyers a unique package that will bring the joy of MINI ownership to a passionate and demanding group of new customers. Selling alongside the Hatch, Convertible, Clubman, Countryman and Coupé, the MINI Roadster will arrive in UK showrooms next spring. As with the recently launched MINI Coupé, all variants of the MINI Roadster carry the Cooper name in their model titles. Full details of standard and optional equipment on each will be released nearer the launch. Unique but familiar styling The MINI Roadster is true to the brand’s existing design language, but sculpted to the classic proportions of a roadster. With an exterior length of 3,734 mm (see panel below for model variations), a width of 1,683 mm and a wheelbase of 2,467 mm, the MINI Roadster’s footprint closely mirrors that of the MINI Convertible. However, the elegant roofline is more than 20 mm lower than its four-seater sibling, allowing the Roadster to cut a distinctive, low-slung and visually stretched stance. Designed around a traditional three-box body structure, the car’s silhouette is dominated by the heavily raked A-pillars, angled backwards by an extra 13 degrees over the MINI Convertible. The waistline rises gently along the car’s length towards the strikingly stepped rear end. Key to the MINI Roadster’s appeal to buyers is its unique canvas roof. The tailored soft-top offers robust, all-season durability with an easy opening and closing

lifestyle semi-automatic operation as part of the standard specification. When opened, the roof folds down flat behind the seats, keeping the car’s elegant lines intact. And since the outer skin of the roof faces upwards, there is no need for any additional cover. MINI enthusiasts will immediately recognise the interior of the Roadster. All the trademark features – including the much-loved large central circular speedo, the rev counter behind the steering wheel and the toggle switches – are present in the two-seater cabin.

Roadster and MINI John Cooper Works Roadster, which provide outstanding lateral support during cornering. Two-seater roadsters have a tendency to lack practicality but that’s not the case with the MINI Roadster. It has a 240 litres of luggage space,

Fuel economy stretches from 38.7mpg to 62.8mpg, while CO2 emissions are as low as just 118g/km on the Cooper SD. Even the MINI John Cooper Works Roadster emits only 169g/km. A full technical breakdown for each model is given below. Classic Roadster dynamics with advanced technology Vital to getting the best from the powerful engines and customary front-wheel drive transmission is MINI’s outstanding chassis technology. It pushes the brand’s hallmark driving fun to the fore, with a ‘go-kart’ feeling that’s agile, precise and stable. The canvas roof means a lowered centre of gravity, while bodyshell stiffening has increased torsional rigidity. The suspension is comprised of MacPherson struts at the front axle and a multi-link rear axle. Sports suspension, which brings stiffer damper characteristics, sturdier anti-roll bars and upgraded springs, is available as an option.

Power for the MINI Roadster comes from the latest generation of fuel-efficient BMW Group four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines

The package includes sports seats fitted as standard in the MINI Cooper S Roadster, MINI Cooper SD

plus the high-opening tailgate, low boot sill and ski hatch make for simple loading. The MINI Roadster also comes with large door bins, three cupholders, and a cross-rack behind the seats. Powerful and fuel-efficient engines Power for the MINI Roadster comes from the latest generation of fuel-efficient BMW Group four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Outputs range from 90 kW/122 hp in the MINI Cooper Roadster to 155 kW/211 hp in the highly desirable flagship MINI John Cooper Works Roadster. MINI’s performance diesel engine, the 105 kW/143 hp Cooper SD launched earlier this year, is also available and the line-up is completed with the Cooper S which offers 135kW/184 hp.

Optimised aerodynamics also play a role. The heavily raked A-pillars and windscreen reduce the frontal area of the body and therefore cut levels of drag. Like the MINI Coupé, the MINI Roadster is fitted with an active rear spoiler that’s integrated

includes ABS anti-lock braking, EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), CBC (Cornering Brake Control), Brake Assist and Hill Start Assistant. DSC also adds DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) with EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) for the driven axle as standard on the MINI John Cooper Works Roadster and as an option on all other model variants. into the tailgate. It extends automatically as soon as the car reaches 50 mph and drops back at 37 mph, though can also be operated manually. Electric Power Steering (EPS) with speedsensitive assistance is standard on the MINI Roadster, for predictable and precise cornering. A Sport button on the centre console, standard on all MINI Roadster models, allows the driver to adjust the car’s steering characteristics and accelerator responses. If the optional six-speed automatic gearbox is specified, pressing this button also shortens shift times. The standard DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system selectively brakes individual wheels and reduces engine power to prevent a front or rear-end slide. The system

The MINI Roadster’s generous list of standard equipment includes speed-sensitive steering assistance, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, rear Park Distance Control, air conditioning and an audio system with MP3compatible CD player, DAB radio and AUX IN connection. Safety features include front and head-thorax airbags, an extremely rigid windscreen frame and polished stainless steel roll-over bars for outstanding occupant protection.

MINIMALISM environmental technology as standard All versions of the MINI Roadster come with the brand’s MINIMALISM environmental technology as standard, providing exceptional powertrain efficiency. Features such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start/Stop, Shift Point Display, Electric Power Steering and the need-based operation of ancillary components help to make efficient use of fuel with low emissions. Additional features include innovative thermal encapsulation of the drivetrain, which shortens the fuel-sapping warm-up period after a cold start.

MINI’s extension list of desirable optional extras means the comfort and individuality of the Roadster can be enhanced in an almost unlimited number of ways. These include a wide range of entertainment, communication and navigation systems, plus MINI Connected with web radio, Google services, RSS news feeds and in-car access to Facebook and Twitter. The MINI Roadster is available in two non-metallic and six metallic paint shades. In keeping with British roadster tradition, the roof remains in black. Sport stripes, available in three colours for the bonnet, boot lid and rear apron, allow owners to add an extra personal touch. Alloy wheels of 15, 16 or 17-inch diameter are standard, depending on the model.

Volkswagen top off Golf Cabrio range with new GTI model...

Following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the new Golf GTI Cabriolet is now available to order at Volkswagen Retailers across the UK. It sits at the top of the Golf Cabriolet range, combining all the pleasures of practical and safe open-air motoring for which this model is renowned, with all the performance and on-road dynamics for which the GTI name has stood since 1975. Living up to this name, the Golf GTI Cabriolet has all the classic design cues. The radiator grille has a honeycomb structure with red edging and GTI badge, while the front bumper incorporates a deep honeycomb air dam and distinctive fog lights. Side sill extensions help give the GTI a wide, well-planted stance, while a bespoke rear diffuser is framed by a chrome tailpipe on either side. Smoked LED tail lights complete the look, along with standard 18-inch ‘Monza Shadow’ alloy wheels. Inside, and under the insulated fully automatic electrically powered roof are four seats covered in the classic tartan ‘Jacara’ cloth upholstery; ‘Vienna’ leather upholstery is optional. The bespoke GTI multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in leather, as are the handbrake and gear lever gaiter, all finished with contrasting red stitching. The pedals have brushed stainless steel caps, while there are black ‘Edge’

decorative inlays on the doors and facia. The hood, which can be folded away in just 9.5 seconds, even while travelling at speeds of up to 18 mph, has a black lining, while the roof pillar trims are also finished in black. It’s no surprise that at the heart of the range-topping cabriolet is the same 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder petrol engine found in the GTI hatchback, mated to either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or optional six-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox and producing 210 PS. The benchmark zero to 62 mph sprint is covered in 7.3 seconds with either transmission, while top speed is 147 mph (146 DSG). Combined fuel consumption is 37.2 mpg (36.7 DSG), with CO2 emissions of 177 g/km (180 DSG). The Golf GTI Cabriolet is available to order now, with the first deliveries due in July.

Penguin PR

What is the ethos behind your business? Miss Penguin PR prides itself on offering affordable and effective PR to new and established businesses based in and around Essex.

Miss Penguin PR is a brand new PR company owned by local Essex girl Danielle Bigaignon. We caught up with Danielle to find out how her new business is going and to ask her advice on starting a company from scratch...

44 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Describe what your business offers? The company offers a range of tailor-made PR and media packages to appeal to businesses with varied budgets. The packages all include brand awareness and perception, social media control, PR strategy, launch events, branding and marketing design and most importantly support, guidance and advice. What made you start up your company? I wanted to start this business as I am extremely passionate about PR, media and communications. I am very ambitious and have never been satisfied working for other businesses as I have always wanted to make my own success and I hope this is the beginning of that. What’s your background in this industry? Previous to starting this business I was the PR manager for Essex Fashion Week which is where I discovered my passion for the field and wanted to take it a step further. EFW gave me the opportunity to explore something I have always been interested in and to build up future relationships and contacts with potential clients.

lifestyle Georgeous Boutique.

How long did it take you to get from the idea to the launch of you business? The idea to start the business was only a few months ago which shows how far new businesses can come in such a short space of time. I am planning an official launch party at the end of June which will include an intimate fashion show to show off some of my fashion clients. I will keep you informed of the details as I would love to invite all of the RM mag team! What areas do you cover? Miss Penguin PR specialises in beauty, hair and fashion clients based in and around Essex. My newest clients to join the team are Georgeous Boutique, Latimer Couture, Spargo Hairdressing, Glitz and Glam Boutique, Marbella Fashion Week and Denise Van-Weenen to name a few! They are all completely unique and individual and I honestly love working with every single client- I hope the feeling is mutual!

of direction. When the client is happy, I am happier! Do you have any advice for other wannabee business owners? If you are reading this and are thinking about setting up your own business I would advise you to do it now! Why wait? There should never be anything holding you back from setting your goals high and achieving your dreams! I have never felt as much job satisfaction as I do now working for myself in an industry I truly love with amazing clients!

What service can your customers expect? My clients can expect a completely professional service with a personal touch as I love to give my own advice and opinions towards the business too. I am also a degree level Graphic Designer and experienced events organiser which expands my knowledge and skills that I have to offer and sets me apart from your average PR company.

If you are reading this and are thinking about setting up your own business I would advise you to do it now!

What has been your biggest challenge so far? My biggest challenge so far is probably setting up the company while having a full time job. It means I have to make sure I am always very pro active and organised and have to be dedicated to working evenings and weekends. My spare time is limited but I love what I do and most of the time it’s more of a pleasure than work!

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? It’s very rewarding when I am assessing the progress of a client’s business since I have been working with them to find significant improvements in various areas. My clients always compliment on how they love my support and enthusiasm which has given their business a fresh new angle and a positive sense

What does the future hold for your business and your clients? Miss Penguin PR is going from strength to strength with new clients, strategies and recognition within the industry. TanSafe Beach thieves begone! There are several rules that should always be adhered to when frolicking on the beach or lounging by the pool: never wear socks with sandals, never tie a hankie round your head and never leave your valuables on show. No, not those valuables; we’re talking about credit cards, keys and mobile phones. That’s why you need TanSafe. As you can see this clever receptacle looks just like a regular bottle of suntan lotion. Simply pop off its watertight lid, bung in your bits and relax. Large enough to conceal iPhones, BlackBerries and maybe even your Mankini, the TanSafe is set to become an essential travelling companion for canny sunbathers everywhere. Final Thought: Great idea from the guys at www.firebox.com

Chilly Towels Is it getting hot in here or what? Probably, but when you’re surrounded by steaming hot products it goes with the territory. But don’t think we sit here all day stewing in sweat as we type – goodness no, we cool off with Chilly Towels. 100% cotton these incredibly refreshing, lightly fragranced pre-packaged towels are seriously cool, literally, straight out of the pack, so you can cool down on the move. For an extra icy rubdown simply pop one in the fridge for a couple of hours and it will remain cool for up to two hours. Ooh, the relief ! They’re ideal for joggers, cyclists, sweaty execs, chefs, beach dwellers, clubbers or anyone who’s travelled a few stops on the Northern Line. Beating the heat with a Chilly Towel is infinitely more convenient than rival cooling down techniques (head in an icebox, ice cubes down the pants, frozen peas rubdown), and once they’ve performed their cooling magic you can use them as regular face towels or dish cloths. All you need to do now is work up a sweat. Final Thought: If you had one in your bag we're sure you'd use it. Just £4.79 from firebox.com
