Known around the world as the ‘Sport of Kings’, polo never fails to attract the great and good and for 2013 the Duke of Essex Grand Prix Polo is set to do just that. However for this year, the event is set to be very different as it looks to become bigger, bolder and better. For starters ownership of the event itself has changed. The King and Grand Prix Events recently acquired the Duke of Essex Polo from the previous owners and wasted no time in looking at how they could improve this much loved event. As their name suggests the new team bring with them a wealth of experience in hospitality from the world of motor racing and they have set themselves a goal of making the Duke of Essex Grand Prix Polo the finest polo event in the UK today. The Gaynes Park venue in Epping has been replaced by a purpose built polo arena at Hyland’s Park Estate in Chelmsford (home to the V Festival no less). The grounds of this beautiful Grade II listed building seem somehow more in keeping with the ‘Sport of Kings’. Gone is the single date and replaced by two….. Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July. The weekend is set to be the best VIP and Family outing in Essex. The organizers are more than aware that the modern day spectacle of polo is as much about the social occasion as it is the sport itself, however it does not stop them looking to deliver a credible event that will attract

some of the world’s greatest players. “We’re looking at striking a genuine balance between ‘sporting event’ and ‘social occasion’ which is one of the reasons for moving to Hyland’s House. They offered to accommodate an arena and of course it does help that the venue is a truly stunning setting.” Hyland’s House is part of the Hyland’s Park Estate which covers an impressive 574 acres of Essex Countryside. Like many stately homes across the country the main house stood empty for a number of years and slowly slipped in to a state of disrepair until the current owners restored the Grade II listed Villa to its former glory. The popularity of the event, which is now in its eighth year, has already seen it firmly established as part of the British Social Season and the move to Hyland’s Park is expected to attract over 10,000 VIP’s and members of the public. For this year the main sporting arena will be surrounded by a wealth of entertainment including various VIP marquees, headline music acts, family fun activity and of course the sort of food and drink that would befit a royal guest or two … who knows who might attend! Once the polo’s finished for the day and the ponies are nicely tucked up on the hay, then the party really starts. The VIP enclosures will be transformed in to one

off night spots with top club DJ’s and performances from current acts and legends alike, the perfect way to round off a true, top class sporting come social extravaganza. It’s well known that polo has never been known as an affordable pastime. However this year The Duke of Essex Polo Grand Prix will be doing its bit to open the sport up to the masses by offering reasonably priced family tickets alongside the stunning VIP packages that offer that extra ‘something special’. This year the VIP package tickets are split into three types, Silver, Gold and Black. Each of these tickets will give the holder entrance to the exclusive Paddock Club Enclosure from where the polo can be viewed from private decked areas during the day and from where the international music acts will perform in the evening. VIP ticket holders will have private buggy transportation to and from the main house, valet parking, access to the sun deck, private washroom and a complimentary barbecue that will run throughout the evening. For those wishing to go along for just the evening event there is of course a special dusk ticket which as the name suggests is from 5.00pm onwards and strictly for over 21’s only. It will include access to the Paddock Club Enclosure and access to the outside stage to see the live bands and international artists with DJ’s starting at 9.00pm and going through to the early hours.

THE FAMAILES - “Opening polo up to the masses is an important part of the event for us this year” which is why the organizers have decided to offer a reasonably priced £20 adult ticket, along with a £15 child ticket with under 12’s accessing for free. These tickets allow access to the Grand Prix Polo Village with its show jumping arena, Shetland pony ‘dinky derby’, the Essex Dog Shoe Display Team, Formula 1 simulator, shopping village and access to the fairground. A Gourmet Food Village will be partnered by a Champagne and The Grand Arena Bar so no one is expected to go hungry or even thirsty on the day. With Hyland’s Park positioned neatly in the very heart of Essex, getting there couldn’t be easier. As a country park, Hyland’s is unquestionably ‘Set for a King’ but for two days this Summer Hyland’s will undoubtedly be ‘Set for the sport of Kings’. The Duke of Essex Grand Prix Polo is set to be one the hottest tickets in town and advance ticket bookings are now available from:

From the

Editor Who went to We Are FSTVL? Taking place in none other than Essex’s very own Upminster, the dance festival of the decade came and landed on our door step. We had our wellies at the ready, rain macs to hand, and started to line our stomach’s a few days before. Visit our website for all the hot gossip! On May bank holiday, the RM team went to this year’s Essex Fashion week, held at the City Pavilion in Romford for the fashion event of the year. Once again, we had a great time looking at all of the hottest boutiques and designers that Essex has to offer, and we came away with some very interesting goodies. I’ll leave that to your imagination. Make sure you look at our top five camping tents and our reasons why festivals are in fact actually good for you. You can use this as your defence when people are commenting on the number of festivals that you’re attending this year. You’re welcome. Sarah Giggle talks exclusively to us about her fabulous lifestyle jet setting across the globe and DJing in some pretty awesome clubs, and psychic Alex Thornhill came in to the RM offices and gave the RM girls a reading each. Their verdicts were very good, and we had a few cynics among us so check her out. Us guys weren’t left out. We got treated by Menace Male Grooming to a luxury pampering session consisting of a haircut, wet shave, massage and a beer. Happy days.

Jade Warrington Tony Wittridge Best gig/festival you have been to and why? To date with RM I would have to say We Are FSTVL, the vibe and scale of the event was immense.

Best gig/festival you have been to and why? Mine and my boyfriend’s first date was seeing The Chemical Brother’s. Now everytime I hear Hey Boy Hey Girl I just think of my boyfriend flaying his arms and legs around like a lunatic!

A mber Sudbury If you could be in band, what band would you be in and why? If I could be in any band, I’d be in Muse. Clearly doesn’t need an explaination.

Festivals wouldn’t be festivals without raving lunatics, and if you’ve never seen one, it’s probably you! From dodgy sunburns to vandalising everything and everyone, you tell us your funniest memories and weirdest festival moments.

“When I crashed a golf buggy, I casually blamed it on hippy vandals.” @itscoopeinnit

“I told a boy how bad his sunburn was for him to reply, ‘It’s a birth mark” @lrnflood

“I came back to my tent @RockNessFest and someone had parked a car in it.” @comedyray

“The lead singer from The View asked my friend “don’t you know who I am?” To which he replied “No...Do you like my wellies?” @Josh12Hodgson

“I helped some random lads tie their mate to a blow up bed and paint him!” @AimmJoee

“I was that revolting girl who peed in the middle of the crowd into a cup... standing next to my dad! He didn’t say anything, he was quite drunk!” Lydia, 22

“A cocky Essex bloke was walking round with “I am a massive c**k” sunburnt onto his back – I really don’t think he knew.” Lauren, 19

“I saw some lads at V Festival rip their shirts off and belly slide across the ground through all the mud, rain and grossness on the ground!” Cassie, 22

“In 2010, I did a roly poly into a guy knocked him over and that’s how the first major mosh pit at Plan B started at V!” Adam, 18

HEALTHfest! Yes, festivals can be good for you!

Portaloos and lack of showers aside, festivals can be good for your health – really! They can benefit the way you look and feel. Okay, you won’t come home after a weekend of camping at Reading looking like Rosie Huntington Whitely – we challenge even Rosie to do that! But check out the ways festivals can boost your body.

Mud

Glastonbury girls, relish in that mud! Naturally exfoliating and moisturising, mud will leave the skin soft and smooth. Just make sure it’s definitely mud when you leave it on your legs.

Sunlight

The sun will fuel you with an all-important dose of vitamin D. “These nutrients are needed to keep bones and teeth healthy,” say the NHS. “The vitamin is made by our body under the skin in reaction to summer sunlight.” It will also elevate your mood and raise energy levels, which means more raving!

Exercise

Whether you’re trekking across a field or booty popping to Beyoncé, festivals create constant exercise opportunities. Just don’t counteract it with too many burgers! 10 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Sociable

Studies have shown that being in a crowd can actually be good for us. When people gather for something they all enjoy, it creates a sense of community and understanding. Those who feel this shared identity frequently have less symptoms of ill health. Sign us up for next year!

Hair

Your hair probably needs a well-deserved break from electric tools and chemicalbased products. Leave it to bask in its natural oils, which coat the hair and protect it from outside damage. When these oils are washed away every day, the hair becomes weaker over time.

Mini Camping

with Cowley Caravan and Swindon Roof Top Tent

The MINI feels very much at home just about anywhere on the planet. And soon the world will also be the oyster of MINI drivers and their entourages. A sumptuously appointed caravan with two sleeping bays and a roof-top tent (also designed for two) in the classic John Cooper Works colour scheme, will whet the appetite for do-it-yourself summer holidays peppered with spur-of-the-moment detours along the way. As style-conscious globetrotters have long recognised, the MINI gets a warm welcome wherever it goes. And the MINI Countryman reaches the parts even its siblings hesitate to venture.

14 | rmmagazine.co.uk

The “Cowley” caravan, offers everything you need to pitch camp in comfort: two welcoming sleeping berths, a twin-burner gas-stove, a water tank with pump and dish-washing facility, a solar module to charge the on-board battery and a 230-volt power connection to supply the refrigerator, TV/DVD and hi-fi stereo system.
The tent can be fitted easily to the roof of a MINI, MINI Clubman or MINI Countryman, and likewise offers sleeping space for two people. All of which makes those stressful last-minute searches for accommodation “so last holiday”. Having found a fittingly dreamy place to catch a stylish night’s shut-eye, it’s just a case of climbing up onto the roof of the MINI, lifting up the upper half of the roof-top

tent box and plumping your pillows ready for impact. The roof-top tent works a treat, whether the location for your beauty sleep is the English shires or the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Indeed, should you have chosen one of nature’s livelier spots to spend the night, the elevated sleeping position will keep passers-by from the animal world at arm’s length.

The design of the roof-top tent box allows it to blend in seamlessly with the MINI when closed. Its lower shell is painted Midnight Black, the upper opening section in Chili Red – a combination previously the preserve of John Cooper Works models.

La Laque Couture Tie and Dye nail polish The master of colour all the way to the tip of the nails, Yves Saint Laurent has created a summer 2013 collection of must-have fashion statements for nails: La Laque Couture Tie and Dye nail polish. The Nail Artistry saga now continues with a collection of new colour-coordinated base and top coat duos, inspired by the layered shading effect of Modern Art’s most brilliant pop trend-setters.

Snow Cone Maker is perfect for making slush snow cones, cold slushies or ice cool cocktails. Similar to the Retro Slushy Maker, you can quickly whip up, up to 4 snow cones in less than a minute for friends, by simply adding ice cubes to the easy to clean bin. The stainless steel blades shaves the ice into a cool, slushy consistency, perfect for summertime consumption.

A Bed And Chair Love Affair Flip the word “paq” upside-down and you get “bed”. A quest for dual meaning is the driving force behind the waterproof paq chair, the transformative armchair that unfolds into a floor mattress. Born out of Hungarian designer Géza Csire’s desire to challenge the perception of objects, this collapsible, comfortable, and convertible piece offers a new lease on modern living.

Rough d n o m a i D Jaime Winstone grew up in her father’s shadow but has emerged from it to prove she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Winstone was born in Camden and raised in Enfield. When her father’s career really began to take off, the family moved to Roydon in Essex and it was there that Jaime got the acting bug herself. While studying at Harlow College for a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts, Winstone soon found herself in a string of gritty productions, from 2004’s Bullet Boy to Kidulthood two years later and Donkey Punch after that. During this time she built up a solid TV presence, most memorably perhaps in Channel 4’s zombie drama, Dead Set. Then came 2010’s Made in Dagenham, which followed the plight of the women who went on strike at Ford’s Dagenham car plant in protest at sexual discrimination. Throughout, Winstone was proving her ability to break out of the mould many people had set for her. “Acting has always been the only thing I’ve ever really wanted to do,” Winstone says. “I’m always getting asked if I feel stereotyped, but everything I’ve done has been quite diverse. I know most of the roles have been very intense, tough roles, but that’s looking from a distance.

“With my strong accent, it makes it seem like that’s all I can do, but I’ve had so much diversity in my career and intend for that to continue.” Interspersed with modelling and theatre gigs, Winstone’s upward career curve continues with her new role in Sky 1’s comedy-drama Mad Dogs, playing a 18 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Jaime Winstone arrives for the Brit Awards 2013 at the O2 Arena, 20/02/201

Jaime Winstone is a rough diamond. With her salt-of-the-earth, gravelly voice and Essex accent, the daughter of British acting treasure Ray has carved herself a nice niche in tough girl roles, with several stand-out turns across what remains, thus far, a relatively short acting career.

shaven-headed con artist alongside Max Beesley, Philip Glenister, Marc Warren and John Simm. Yes, it’s another tough girl role, but she harbours a desire to push her skills further. “I’d love to do period drama,” she laughs, “but I don’t know if it would work. Made in Dagenham was based in the Sixties but I’d like to go further back. Maybe I’m not really there yet. I’m just hoping it comes my way. I do have a slight fear of Jane Austen and the like, so I need to conquer that fear! I want to try everything… well, everything apart from musicals!” And actually, another part Winstone wasn’t so keen on was the role of Stacey Slater in EastEnders, which she was offered before Lacey Turner. “Yeah, I turned it down,” she says. “It wasn’t a snobby thing like, ‘oh, I don’t want to be on a soap’, I just never wanted to work on EastEnders. You’d get stuck. I know how important it is to be employed as an actor - especially in a long-running job like EastEnders and because my dad was struggling to piece it together for so many years - it just felt wrong to me.” Although family ties have certainly been helpful in terms of her career, at times shaking off the shadow of her father has proved difficult. “The kind of attention you get can be a little overwhelming at certain points,” Winstone admits. “There was a time when it was relentless – stories coming one after the other and I thought, ‘why are they coming after me so much?’ “When we lived in Enfield, Dad wasn’t really famous so it was all pretty low key and normal, but when we moved to Essex after things started to turn for him, it got a bit strange. I guess it’s a case of adapting to the things that life throws at you.” While accepting that attention from the press is inevitable, Winstone says it can be a frustrating part of the lifestyle she has signed up for. “I remember one story about when I was at a concert where I supposedly got thrown out because I was crazy drunk, throwing drinks over the place. It was complete rubbish – I was there with my 12-year-old niece for starters! I mean, where do people get off saying they saw me do that when it didn’t happen? Maybe I was an easy target. I don’t mind people writing about me as long as it’s true!” Despite the attention of the UK paparazzi, Winstone is happy to resist the bright lights of Hollywood and stay close to home. “I go to LA quite a bit but I’m in demand here at the moment,” she smiles. “I don’t feel the pressure to hit the States. I like what’s going on here and I want an important role in British film. Hollywood is something I’d like to explore one day, but staying true to my Essex roots, and to British film and TV, is much more important for now.”

Essex Fashion Week 2013 Forget New York, Paris and Milan, Essex’s contribution to the fashion world over the May bank holiday was all anyone was talking about. Ivana Sidey was with the RM team on fashion’s frontline with the rest of the FROWers at Essex Fashion Week. From the champagne-adorned tables to the hottest trends, Essex Fashion Week spoilt us once again. For those of you who haven’t walked down the red carpet and into the venue packed with local businesses and boutiques, it is truly unique. Despite being called a fashion week, guests watched all the shows over one day and under one roof. The event took over the Millennium Suite inside The City Pavillion in Romford. After walking through the venue’s decadent double doors, guests were left to browse the stalls that curved around the room. While browsing, guests even had the opportunity to talk with the designers they were buying from, such as luxury swimwear designer Anna Lous, and representatives from holster Australia whose lush, embellished jelly sandals are sold in Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, and boutiques nationwide, including three in Essex.

The TOWIE hype didn’t end with Lauren, as Tom Pearce was among the new designers and couldn’t wait to tell us about his new range No Agg. “It all started from our website NoAgg.com, which launched about two weeks ago,” says the cheeky Essex chap. “Some of the clothing has been designed by my business partner, Zain Choudry, so I’m the brains, he’s the t-shirt designer. We provide for both boys and girls - you need to make sure the girls are looked after!” He’s been eager to launch himself into fashion for some time. “I can’t wait to hear everyone’s feedback. I have wanted to do this for a while as we both love fashion. Zain’s dad supplies clothing to big high street shops like Topshop, so we have always really liked high street clothing at affordable prices. No Agg has had a really great response.”

And it was clear why. Both the women pieces and men’s t-shirts exclusively designed by Zain, were good quality and reasonably priced. fantastic live performances sung The tones and logos throughout the men’s line gave them a style similar to All Saints, by X Factor’s Amy Mottrom and Tony while the womenswear would not have Roberts from Britain’s Got Talent looked out of place in Topshop.

Lauren Pope was also amongst the designers, modelling the pieces from jewellery sponsors Nikki Lissoni and Holler Watches. Nikki’s delicate necklaces are teamed with different sized coin pendants, which feature various intricate details such as flowers, hearts and keys. With Nikki’s jewellery, you become the designer and select the metal, chain length, pendant style and pendant size to create a piece completely individual to you. Holler has bold, chunky designs, adding an urban edge to your outfit. Other celebrity fans include the Pussycat Dolls, Mike Tyson and Essex dance group Diversity. 24 | rmmagazine.co.uk

After sipping champagne, shopping and rubbing shoulders with celebrities, it was time for the catwalk show, which is never complete without some front row celebrities. Nikki Grahame made a rare public appearance, alongside former Big Brother star Aislene Horgan-Wallace, who was less camera shy in a bust-boosting crop top, and took a liking to TOWIE newbie James Lock. Other TOWIE cast members present were Jasmin Walia, Abi Clark and Danni Park Dempsey. When it was time for the fashion show, everyone eagerly took their seats. The lights dropped and the

party atmosphere soared. An outstanding breakdance performance from Holler kicked things off, followed by Lipstick Boutique’s catwalk show to Beyonce’s Run The World. Models wore contemporary high street fashion: bodycon dresses, lace creations, plus pieces with flashes of neon and cut out designs. The Lady Muck collection was awash with lace dresses, complete with diamante and feather accents. More surprises came during the No Agg show, when boxer Chris Eubank joined Tom and Zain on the catwalk afterwards give his support. Throughout the show entertaining interludes were given by the evening’s comperes: TOWIE’s Bobby Norris and one of the event’s founders, Adam Ryan. There were also fantastic live performances sung by X Factor’s Amy Mottrom and Tony Roberts from Britain’s Got Talent. The catwalk closed with the eagerly awaited show from lingerie and adult toy purveyors Bondara. They flaunted a range of bondage gear and even gave out goodie bags to the crowd. That’s one way to get the after party started! When LoveJuice took over for the evening, music boomed through the venue and the drinks flowed, ending the event in true Essex etiquette. Although the success of Essex Fashion Week has seen it turn four this year, fans will be disappointed that the event has been made annual instead of biannual. Adam Ryan is busy working on other projects, but if you can’t wait a year for another extraordinary fashion event, you’re in luck. Marbs Fashion Week is set to take off from 23 to 26 August, with the dates for Ibiza Fashion Week’s still to be announced. Adam promised us that this year would be bigger and better then before and they definitely delivered.

DIY Festival

Fashion

Reinvent your festival wardrobe with some simple, inexpensive tweaks. Less money spent on new outfits means more money for the bar! Whoop! Another summer brings another festival and another wardrobe update, but instead of buying new clothes, it can be cheaper to customise the ones you already have. Don’t think you need to be the next McQueen; a couple of items and some creativity is all you need.

EMBELLISH From hardcore spikes to delicate diamantes, embellishments can be either glued or ironed onto anything. The hottest festival detail has to be studs for their instant edge. Create whatever design you fancy, whether it’s pocket detailing or all-out bling. Apply some glue to the stud, press onto the shorts, hold for a few seconds. Boom!

FOR IRON-ON ITEMS Put the garment onto a hard surface and position the details on the item. Cover with a thin cloth, then press the iron on for the instructed time. Reverse the item and repeat. Studs – hot heat for 10 seconds Rhinestones – hot heat for 15-20 seconds Pearlhead – medium heat for 10 seconds Times are approximate and will vary with fabrics. For thicker material like denim, apply the heat for a little longer.

You’ll need:

CUSTOMISE Make your trilby stand out in the crowd by giving it an elegant summer touch. Wrap a thick strip of white lace above the brim, tie into a bow, and tuck the ends in. You can secure it with UHU glue if you want to make it a permanent detail. Simple, sweet and styled in seconds, you’ll have the protection of a hat but the femininity of a headband.

You’ll need:

A plain top Tie dye kit (dye, elastic bands, disposable gloves) Cling film Water

TIE DYE Inject an innocent white top with some attitude by giving it a tie-dyed military makeover. One kit will dye eight tops, which is perfect if you’re going to a festival in a group, and want unique themed tops. Add water to the dye and wait for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, tie elastic bands around the areas you want a pattern, and when the dye is ready, squirt it over the top. Wrap it in cling film, leave for 6-8 hours, then wash off.

including a version created by Se7en Deadly Breaks – “I love their remix, I prefer it to mine!”

Have you heard S

the Giggle?

he’s travelled the world, hung out with top DJs and has just released her first single, but DJ Sarah Giggle assures us that her career is far from glamorous. It’s a Thursday morning in the RM office, but instead of the radio easing us through the morning, we have a deep-house beat pumping out. This is the debut single Take It From Me by DJ Sarah Giggle.

32 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Since beginning her career in late 2009, Sarah has DJed all over the world, from Ibiza and Marbella to India and Dubai. Now she wants to take her career further and says producing is the way to take it to the next level. “I always said I didn’t want to produce, but you have to really. I’m nervous!” says the thirty-year-old. Take It From Me has a “big, oldroom house, hands-in-the-air noise in it,” and reflects the Essex girl’s taste in music. It has been a hit with other artists, as there have been six remixes made,

Reaching this stage wasn’t easy. “It’s really strange, because when you hear music you just hear music. When you see how it’s made, it’s made from -” she uses her knuckle and rhythmically bangs the radiator beside her “- that would be a noise you put into it.” This long process was made more difficult when she didn’t click with her first colleague, so switched to someone who understood her ideas. “As a good DJ, you always look at your crowd, and you’ll notice that sometimes it’s not always the vocals they react to, it’s the noises; so you learn what people love,” she explains. “When most DJs create tracks they try and put together the pieces that they see people going crazy to.” Once finished, it was rejected from five big record labels, but she then sent it to Bloxbox and it was signed in three days. However, the hardships don’t disappear with a signature, especially as a female. “Being a girl is hard. Guys always say ‘oh you use your looks to get what you get,’” she says. “Guys are known for their music whereas girls are known for their looks. It’s hard work trying to prove that you’re there because you love music and you’re good at what you do.” Her passion for music is also clear physically. A trail of heart-shaped music notes float up her tanned foot to her ankle, with a small single one on her outer ear. She already has plans for her second release. “On the next one I want to sing more, even though I can’t really sing! So it should be interesting.” Despite her career becoming stronger, she assures me the life of a DJ is far from glamorous. She talks about her past hectic schedules, which involve numerous flights, airport lounges, a quick DJ set, car transfers and no sleep. “Everyone thinks it must be amazing to be paid to travel the world, and that it’s really luxurious,” she says, “but no, you see more airport lounges and cars than anything in the countries.”

exclusive interview

Sarah’s hot spots

Low energy and pay aside, she loves meeting other musicians, but don’t think she’ll be star struck! Despite being a fan of DJ Mark Knight, she didn’t recognise him when he complimented her set in Southend. “I’m terrible, you can put famous people in front of me and I won’t have a clue,” she laughs. “In Dubai I was chatting to Jason Derulo for half an hour and didn’t even know! But that was probably a bonus because I was tipsy!” It’s obvious why she’s called herself Giggle. She’s always smiling and her laugh bubbles up whenever she recalls a funny moment. “I will not forget this until the day I die. A guy appeared from the back of the club in an inflatable dingy that Major Lazer Live had thrown out. He crowd surfed to the front, high-fived all the DJs, then crowd surfed off in the dingy!” And Not forgetting disastrous outfits. “I’ve turned up before in a corset, velour jogging bottoms and UGGs because I was running late. But the pictures looked wicked because you could just see this bit!” she says, gesturing to her upper half and very impressive bust. And it’s not just her own experiences she cares about. “Sometimes you play certain tunes and you watch everyone at the front of that crowd shut their eyes and remember the moment they relate that song to; that is why I do it,” she smiles. “Gangnam Style is a ridiculous song, but when you watch everyone have such a laugh to it, and someone does something silly, that becomes a memory for them for the rest of their lives. You’re creating memories for people, which I think is amazing.”

America

India

“I really want to go to America, I’ve never been. I’d go wherever.”

In India I play really new stuff. “They’re more ‘wow,’ crazy music! They like quite big room and EDM music.”

Portugal Played at a 10,000 people festival. “That was my first festival, it was pretty cool!”

Marbella “It’s very much Essex house music.”

Now that she’s putting her own spin on things, Sarah is far from hanging up her headphones. “I want to run before I can even stand, let alone walk. I’m not big enough yet!” Sarah’s single is available to download from itunes http://alturl.com/ph7s2 www.soundcloud.com/djsarahgiggle Twitter @sarahgiggle Facebook.com/djsarahgiggle

Greece Crowd surfed here! “It was so funny, everyone said ‘no you shouldn’t go out front-wards!’ I just dived off and I went all the way to the back.”

Australia “I want to tour Australia, I’d do it for half the price. I love it, I’ve been twice.”

DUBAI Ibiza The money is bad but it’s great to be there. “Last year, I was only supposed to be there for a month and a half, but didn’t come back until September!”

“Dubai is such a good up and coming place. You can go out 7 nights a week there, they’re a little bit behind in their music there, but you find that in some places.”

Leds on Tour, German TV and Half Naked Men at EFW! The craziness continues.... ‘All About You’ entered the UK Airplay charts at number 55 (with over 180 plays a week!) I have never been so chuffed with a result of one of my singles so thank you so much to everyone who bought it and sang along to it on the radio! I embarked on my first German tour and also performed on one of their national breakfast shows... it has been another hectic but fab month to be a Leddy!!!

Hamburg

Hamburg was amazing! We decided to go out after the show and explore the city... it got messy. You can take the girl out of Essex but you cannot take away her desire for cocktails.... this one was called ‘Hannibal’ hahaha!

4 days... 4 German Cities. #LedsOnTour Cologne

1st stop was Cologne- we visited Cologne Cathedral during the day of the showand yes... we climbed it. 350 steps. I was NOT prepared for this!! Haha it was magnificent though and the crowd that night was brilliant.

Stuttgart

The last show of the tour was sad but good fun - during the day we found a shop FILLED with pianos!!!

Berlin

Berlin had to be my favourite thanks to three amazing fans who brought me a charm bracelet, chocolates and a very sweet note from all three of them! Big shout out to Olivia, Selena and Veronika!

Gibson Guitars An Essex Girl on National German TV!

A week after my German tour had finished I was flown out to Berlin again to performed on national breakfast television! One of my earlier singles, ‘Summer Song’ (released in the UK 2010) has only just been released in Germany and is also in the airplay charts over there! I had the chance of performing the single on Germany’s national breakfast TV show MorgenMagazin. It was so much fun and as nerve wracking as it was (knowing it was going out to nearly a million viewers!) the response has been great!

Thanks so much to Gibson Guitars for lending me the beautiful Songwriter Deluxe acoustic guitar. They have been supporting my music for many years and I just love the sound of their acoustics!

Essex Fashion Week This years Essex Fashion Week was a good laugh, the beautiful Leanne Tattoo (fashion writer for RM) and I couldn’t resist heading over to the Bondara stall... where they were giving away more than free saucy goodie bags.... these lovely guys were posing for pictures all day on a pop out bed in the middle of the stalls.... nice!

Are you UNSIGNED in Essex?

written by Rae Delanie Passfield

Our county has a vibrant, buzzing music community, with an abundance of live venues, fervent crowds and countless success stories. Though a great place to start, competition is fierce and it can be difficult to get noticed. Here are some tips on how to get your head above the rest and your name on people’s lips

PERFORMING LIVE

Goodfellas Family Italian Barbers

Contemporary Hair Design For Men by

Adam & Gianni

Whether you’re playing to twenty people in Chelmsford or two hundred people in London, your live performance will make or break you. A bad show will put you in the “forgettable” pile whereas a great show will have the crowd dancing, singing, talking, buying and remembering. Make an impression!

GET NETWORKING

For an unsigned artist or band, social networking could not be more important. Having a, well-made, regularly updated profile on giant sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter will give people an avenue to listen to your music, see what you’re up to and where you’re going. It enables fans to stay informed, to follow you and be part of it. By using these tools well you will spread the word and gain momentum.

FREEBIES

Put your name on everything and give it to everyone you see! Hand out flyers and posters with info about your MySpace or Facebook page. Make sample CDs and give them away at your show. At this level you should use merchandise to get people to hear your music and remember your name - not to make money. Once you have a small following of fans you will be able to start selling things, profits of which you can use to reinvest in yourselves.

T: 01708 222555

MAKE A PRESS KIT

Produce a professional looking, concise press kit which compiles your contact information, biography, gigging experience and, if your budget allows, a demo and some photographs. You will need to send this press kit off to venues, promoters and record companies so it needs to be done right. Be creative but keep it neat!

DON’T GIVE UP

Making countless phone calls to labels and venues can be exhausting and, sometimes, discouraging, but this is all part of the process. Gigging at every possible opportunity will give you the vital exposure you need and increase the chance of being booked by bigger venues. Working hard, getting involved and being passionate about your music is vital to your success.

PUTTING THE BARBIE into barbecue! Whether you’re picnicking in the park or feasting at a festival, our guide will show you barbecuing is no longer a man’s job. Why is it that most men can’t cook in the kitchen, but are gastronomic gods when it comes to grilling outside? And it seems to be the opposite for women; as soon as they step up to a barbecue, their cooking skills go up in smoke. One theory is that men have fire in their blood. “It comes down to the caveman thing, and wanting to light fires,” says Angela Stokes from garden supplier World of Power. Well roll up those sleeves, ladies, and say ‘UG!’ because lighting a charcoal barbecue is about to become as easy as lighting aromatherapy candles.

You will need: 1. A Charcoal barbecue (obviously) 2. Quality charcoal 3. Fire lighters 4. Chimney starter 5. matches

Ditch the disposables Those throw-away foil tins that pound shops and supermarkets call ‘barbecues’ any good? “Disposable barbecues are good for festivals, they serve a purpose. But you’re going to get a much better standard of cooking using a proper piece of kit than the disposable one,” says Stokes. If you’re a camping queen or a festival fanatic, you’re better off investing in a good quality portable barbecue. “In the long run it’s going to save you a lot of money,” says Stokes, plus most of them have a ten-year warranty. Buy quality charcoal Making sure you have got the right fuel for your flames is key; you wouldn’t fill your petrol car up with diesel would you? The quality of charcoal affects how long you can cook for. “Some of the supermarket brands will only burn for 45 minutes, whereas the Weber varieties are designed to burn for up to four hours,” says Stokes. Choosing the right charcoal also depends on what you want to cook. “If you look on the side of the bag it will tell you how long it will burn for, and tell you what food it’s going to best for,” says Stokes. However, various coals won’t affect the taste of food.

WEBER Premium Charcoal Kettle BBQ £167.99

WEBER Portable Chimney Starter £9.74

Invest in a chimney starter If you would rather pay someone £10 to get your barbie burning, you might as well buy a chimney starter. They guarantee to light your charcoal barbecue faster and easier. This is a metal tube with holes around the side that stands in your barbecue. Pop a few firelighters in the bottom, burn them, then place your charcoal on the shelf above them. Once ready after, about 20 minutes, use the handle to tip the hot coals into the barbecue and voila! “You have to wait for your charcoal to be white hot before you can cook. This can take an hour and some of the pieces don’t light, but if you use a chimney starter correctly, it’s foolproof. You cannot get it wrong!” says Stokes. NEVER put a barbecue in your tent. Think you’re being safe by stowing your barbecue in a tent from thieves? Think again. The carbon monoxide from a used barbecue can poisoning and kill. “A family died last year because they put a disposable barbecue in their tent to cool down overnight and the carbon monoxide killed them,” says Stokes. www.worldofpower.co.uk

Women in Business I meet with many businesses in my working life. Some have hundreds of employees, some have less than 10, but in the past couple of years, I have seen far more individuals running very successful businesses. At this present time, small businesses are the backbone of the UK economy. Business ventures succeed or fail depending on the attitude of the ‘owner’. You can’t just think your business is going to be a success, you have to truly believe it. For some years now I have been working with my colleagues to create a high level of support for Havering ‘start ups’ and existing businesses, mentoring them, providing information, signposting, organising business events, and helping them recognise how good and successful they really are. Havering Council intend to build on their existing support activities, and deliver a more comprehensive service to the Havering business community, so watch this space. Nine years ago, we introduced the Havering Business Awards to recognise the success of our businesses and showcase the exceptional companies and individuals that exist amongst the Havering business community. It is an award winning event that gives an opportunity to every Havering business, large, small or micro, to raise their profile through the marketing that surrounds the event, networking with their peers at the black tie Gala Dinner, and automatically being entered for other Awards across London. Check out www.haveringbusinessawards.co.uk where you can download one of the many application forms. Don’t forget, you don’t have to be a major player to enter, it could just be you, working from home; a little jewel in Havering! Every single business in Havering is important to us and we want to recognise the great work you are doing. It’s also a time of discovery for us, we often come across companies that we didn’t even know exist! Call me if you want to discuss the possibility of entering the Awards, or any other business related issue. Yvonne Bendall 01708 432871 Yvonne.bendall@haveringgov.uk
