All the models in the Supremacy Collection include a carefully selected combination of high performance natural upholstery fillings, balanced to the number of patented Sensa Pocket Plus springs in the mattress and base system, creating a special character for every bed, each designed to deliver sleeping comfort – For the Rest of Your Life.

The Somnus bed name has been in existence since 1840, and has always been renowned as market leader in the manufacture of luxury beds through the development and introduction of innovative features. Today, Somnus has an enviable reputation for integrity, with each bed handmade to the very highest standards with superior spring technology, Yorkshire Dales Eco Wool developed on the Somnus Farm, premium fabrics and new headboard designs which ensure every bed in the Supremacy Collection is unchallenged in providing the very best luxury and comfort.

The Somnus unique multi-tiered spring system ‘Sensa Pocket Plus’ has been designed and developed to enable significantly more springs to be built-in to every bed, with no less than 14,000 springs in the Legend model shown here. This technology dissipates the sleeper’s weight across a higher number of springs, which may be specified as regular or firm

support dependent on individual’s preferences, to provide greater support and a lifetime of durability. No compromises have been made with each of the filling blends selected for their individual quality and character. The Yorkshire Dales Eco wool, naturally resilient and breathable has been developed on the Somnus farm, establishing the Somnus Policy of using only the highest quality materials, locally sourced wherever possible, not only supporting the British farming industry but also in support of Prince Charles’s Campaign for Wool– with the added benefit of a reduced carbon footprint to care for the world around us. For a naturally healthy sleep environment, hand teased horsehair is selected for its

inherent breathability and temperature control, together with traditional natural fibres, including 100% pure home grown Hemptex, cotton, cashmere, mohair and silk. These all provide super soft resilience, and reassuring warmth – in the knowledge that an investment in a Somnus Supremacy Bed is an investment in pure quality and comfort. All the beds in The Supremacy Collection are handmade and may be customised to suit your individual requirements. When choosing your bed, firstly decide your preferred support; regular or firm, then consider the array of finishing touches to create your own look matching your bedroom décor. Your divan base

may be beautifully finished in any one of our extensive range of luxury fabrics, choose from the discrete elegance of the shallower base with stylish legs for the contemporary look, or a SOMNUS traditional deeper divan base with castors, where drawer options may also be specified. To finish the look of your Supremacy Divan set Somnus have created a range of over 20 stylish Headboards offering a wide choice of classic, contemporary and traditional looks. When matched with any divan set from the Supremacy collection be assured your bed will not only give you the rest of your life, but also be a stunning focal point in your bedroom.

CLEANING UPHOLSTERY & CURTAINS *FREE COLLECTION & DELIVERY *Offer ends April 30th 2012. Terms and conditions apply

We invest hundreds if not thousands into our interiors. Curtains and upholstery are very expensive to replace, so it’s always good to know how to protect and prolong the life of these costly investments. The first basic rule is to vacuum. We should ideally vacuum our curtains and settees once a month. This will stop the build up of dust and debris which causes fibre deterioration.

Sunlight, humidity and water stains all play an important part in destroying our curtains. Just remember that the lining is there not only to keep the cold out, but also to protect the main fabric of the curtain. You can always have the lining replaced as this is a much cheaper option than remaking the whole curtain.

Curtains

When you purchase a settee, it is always wise to have it professionally stain guarded. We offer this service for removal covers. This is a specially applied treatment that forms a clear barrier between the cover and the stain. Stain Guard stops the material from absorbing the spillages. After the cleaning process, the covers come up like new and treatment is reapplied.

Most curtains are prone to shrinkage. This is because the fabric has not been pre shrunk as it is stretched on a loom. After cleaning, the fabric relaxes back into its original length. However, this is not a massive issue as there is always a generous hem underneath the curtain so they can be let down.

Settee and Cushion Covers

A couple of great tips for settee arms is to have extra covers made to drape over them. You can also place a stylish throw over the arms, or another alternative is to place a bolster or cushion against the arm. This will help prevent accidents from getting to the arms. You can easily bring in your cushion covers for cleaning but not the arms! There are some simple products you can buy off the shelves as well; any protection is better than none. In the event of an accident, just blot the slain with a neutral kitchen towel and leave. Bring them in to us and let us work our magic. At Efendi Dry Cleaners, not only do we clean and press to perfection but we can also alter, shorten and refine, all without leaving your home. Efendi offers a collection and delivery service free of charge.

This season, adorn your home with splashes of bold colour. This trend is not for the faint hearted, so think raspberry pinks, electric blues and grass greens either on your walls or subtly in your accessories. Team acid colours with contrasting pastels for that real “Va Va Voom’! www.next.co.uk

INTERIOR TRENDS 2012

BOLD COLOURS

INDUSTRIAL It’s called a number of names; French Industrial, Factory Cast-Off and Utilitarian but the look is all the same. Think oversized metal lighting, scrubbed wood floors and storage units and you’ll be bang on trend this year. Influenced by 1920s and 1930s ex-industrial plants, this trend is perfect for making a statement. www.next.co.uk

MODERN HISTORY This look as been loved for the past few years despite its mainstream popularity, and it’s only getting bigger. Opt for neutral colours, such as creamy whites, browns and sea-greens to bring in the Amish influences. Think ‘Vintage Farm’ and you’ll be on the right track. www.matalan.co.uk

A VICTORIAN TOUCH This trend is all about the arrangement of accessories. Forget the Victorian drapes and over furnished rooms, use decedent accessories to create maximum impact. Think eye catching pieces such as ornate candle sticks, pretty photo frames and different shaped jars to create this ultimate look. www.houseoffraser.co.uk

Spring Clean

your own way! By Sophie Barnes

HOMES & INTERIORS

W

hen you’re feeling energized on a beautiful spring morning but your smeary windows and dust balls dampen your mood, you know it’s that time of year again; Spring Cleaning! Yes, it’s time to clear out your cupboards and freshen your upholstery, but don’t panic, RM Magazine have put together some tips and tricks to help make your spring clean go as smoothly as possible. So smoothly you may even enjoy it!

First things first, the analysis of the areas. Take a look at all the areas within your home that need some TLC. From the behind the sofas to the back cupboards, every area needs some attention. At the end of your spring cleaning session you know you are going to be filled with that feeling of accomplishment, so get going. The preparation is a crucial factor for not dragging out this process. We have a brilliant idea to organise your belongings and to help you get rid of all that clutter. All you need is four boxes, all labelled up. The first box is for all the bits you want to keep, and the second is for the plain old rubbish. Label the third box for

storage, for example your old winter clothes to make way for your new season buys. However, in this stage you need to be ruthless. If you are harbouring clothes from Christmas 2005 with no intention of wearing them, why not give them to charity? Therefore, your fourth box can be labelled up for charity. With these four boxes, labelled and prepared, it will stop the job getting out of hand. The quickest and easiest way to get through the cleaning process is having less stuff to clean!

Do it yourself:

Saving for your summer holidays, or fancy being a bit eco-friendly? Then here are some tips and tricks to get you in the full swing of your spring clean.

Disinfectant

Making your own disinfectant is quick and easy and is a more natural and cheaper option for cleaning pretty much anything. All you need is two cups of water, three table spoons of liquid soap, and twenty to thirty drops of tea tree oil and you are ready to go!

Air Freshener

A top trick to get that fresh air smell within your house is to simply leave all the windows in your house open. Open your windows whilst you’re working up a sweat cleaning away and let all the odours escape, ventilating your house with a clean blast of fresh air.

work its magic over night. In the morning, you will not need half as much elbow grease when you scrub away the grime!

Carpet Cleaning

A quick tip to get your carpets smelling and looking brand new, all you need is some baking soda. Sprinkle one cup over your carpets, let it set for roughly thirty minutes and give it good vacuum.

Window Cleaning

Cleaning your windows and mirrors is an essential job; to admire your own reflection of course! The old wives tale of mixing two tablespoons of white vinegar, a gallon of water and wiping those mirrors down with a newspaper, has proven to be an ideal way to make them glisten. If the smell of vinegar is too strong for you, we suggest substituting it with lemon juice or club soda, which will do an equally astonishing job.

After all these top tips and tricks from us here at RM, you have no excuse for leaving your spring-cleaning until next year. So get out those rubber gloves and test out your own homemade cleaning products and get your home clutter free and ready for summer.

Oven Cleaning

For the job that makes most shudder, the dreaded cleaning of your oven! We have an easy method that will make your oven shine, with hardly any effort at all. Use a homemade paste made from just baking soda and fizzy water, cover your oven top to toe and leave to

Help for First time buyers entering the housing market?

Expert advice on EVERY lender deal

Paul Flavin is from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd and comments on the latest Bank of England’s MPC’s decision to hold interest rates at the record low of 0.5%. The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee has again decided to hold interest rates at the record low of 0.5% for the 35th month and has announced that it is to increase its Quantitative Easing (QE) programme as it bids to stave off a recession. Overall Product Numbers Overall mortgage product numbers reduced a little in January, although we continue to see an increase in the number of mortgage products both at 90% and even 95% loan to value. This will enable more potential purchasers and in particular first time buyers to potentially enter the housing market. Average Rates February has witnessed a small rise in the average cost of 2, 3 and 5 year fixed rates and also in 2 year trackers, although all three categories of fixed rates remain below the same period in 2011. Average initial rates for fixed deals are currently 4.36% (2yr),

4.63% (3yr), 4.64% (5yr) and 3.54% for 2 year trackers. The UK is directly affected by what happens in the eurozone and with this latest round of QE and with the base rate again held at 0.5%, this could end up providing a boost to mortgage borrowers. O

ur very own Editor, Tony, and myself (Art Editor, Annie) were invited over to The Cookery School at Braxted Park to try out their ‘Quick and Easy Entertaining’ food course. With both of us being massive foodies, we jumped at the chance to learn some new culinary skills and here’s what happened… WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK 23

HOMES & INTERIORS to start cooking. First on the agenda was making dough for the bread. Now this was the first time I had ever attempted to make bread dough and it wasn’t half as hard as I imagined it to be! After mixing all the ingredients together, we kneaded the dough for ten minutes and set it aside to rise. Next, Mark taught us how to chop up onions and garlic properly, in preparation for the meals ahead. A tip for all you RM readers: did you know that the best way to get the smell of garlic off your hands is to rub them on a stainless steel tap? No, neither did we but it worked!

Mushroom Filo Parcels

Wilted Spinach Now I have to admit, I do see myself as quite a dab hand in the kitchen, drizzling olive oil like Jamie Oliver and trying to imitate Ainsley Harriott with my frying pan, so I was very excited to see what the day had in store for us and what new tips and tricks we could pick up. On first arriving at Braxted Park, it was picture perfect. The estate is set upon acres of land, all beautifully covered in snow. We were warmly welcomed in to the cookery school by Julie and enjoyed coffee and biscuits whilst being briefed on what the day had in store for us. Today’s recipes included pecan, parmesan and oregano foccaccia, French fish pie, classic risotto, mushroom filo parcels, tarte aux oignons rouge provencal (or red onion tart to you and me!) pizzas, Mediterranean chicken, banoffee pie and lemon meringue roulade.

Bread Dough We had a pretty full packed day ahead of us! We were introduced to our chef, Mark David, who has had a very varied career. From the cavernous, almost tropical kitchens of a large city centre hotel in Yorkshire, Mark had worked as a waiter in Paris, a chef at Waltons Restaurant, Chelsea, London, a restaurant and hotel inspector for Egon Ronay and much more including a memorable year with Robert Carrier at Hintlesham Hall, Suffolk. As well as teaching cookery classes, Mark works closely with AGA demonstrating their world famous cookers in East Anglia and the Home Counties. Mark is one of many chefs that teach at The Cookery School at Braxted Park. After the meeting and greeting, we were handed our very own aprons and ushered into the kitchen

After refining my knife skills it was now time to make the pastry for the tarts and the caramelized onion filling. Mark was a great mentor and his passion and enthusiasm for cooking was rubbing off on me as each dish brought me more and more excitement! We set aside the finished pastry, which were now in their cases, and returned to the bread dough, which had doubled in size! We had made three separate doughs and took a piece off each for our pizzas. We then started to make the pizza topping, which was made up of sundried tomatoes, garlic, peppers and herbs. The smells circling the kitchen were amazing and I couldn’t wait to try the food. After popping the pizzas in the oven, we returned to our bread dough and topped each one differently with pecans, sundried tomatoes, sesame seeds, chives and sea salt and after popping aside to rise a little more, we moved on to making the banoffee pie. Now if I’m honest, I’m not much of a dessert fan but once we started cooking the filling for the banoffee pie, I was dying to try some (and I did cheekily, I do have a habit of licking bowls and spoons!) and once we had set it in its tin, it was time for us to have a break and sample the pizzas we had made. Pizza is one of the recipes I have always wanted try and after tasting the ones we had made, it is something I am definitely going to do more often. The flavours were gorgeous and the toppings were really quick and easy to whip together. After eating more than my fair share of the pizza it was time to return to the kitchen and get cracking on our other recipes…we had lots to do! We started by putting the cream topping on the banoffee pie, leaving it to set, then we moved on to

HOMES & INTERIORS making the meringue for the roulade. We whipped together caster sugar and egg whites until firm and spread it on a tray to be put in the oven. We then set to work on making the lemon cream filling. Adding whipped cream, lemon juice and zest along with lemon curd all into a bowl, we mixed it all together to create a very sumptuous filling (again I had to test it myself to make sure it was OK to eat.. and it was!). Mark then showed us how to make the pesto to go into our mushroom parcels. We blitz garlic, pine nuts, fresh basil and grana padarno together with some olive oil to create a pesto, which had such a fresh smell. We then stuffed this in our de-storked mushrooms and sealed them in little filo parcels, they were ready for cooking. We returned once again to our bread dough, which had risen even more, it was massive! After placing it on baking trays it was now ready for the oven. Next on the agenda was the Mediterranean chicken. First Mark showed us how to correctly cut up and de-breast the chicken and after a very successful attempt, the chicken was now ready to be cooked. We browned it off in a frying pan, skin side down, along with some shallots. After it had nicely browned, we added the chicken to a baking dish along with olives, garlic, balsamic vinegar and rosemary. We added white wine to the frying pan, which released all the cooked juices, topped up with stock then added that to the chicken and popped it in the oven. Mushroom Filo Parcels

Foccaccia Bread

Mediterranean Chicken

Next we placed the tarts in the oven and made a start on the risotto and mash potato. We carefully added wine and stock to the risotto rice and continuously stirred until cooked. We then started to poach the fish ready for the French fish pie. Once the fish had cooked, we made a gorgeous sauce from the stock by making a white sauce and adding cream, parsley and seasoning. We then whipped up some croutons to sit on the top of the pie et viola, it was ready to eat! The last dish to prepare was the seasonal vegetables. These were blanched and cooked to retain their colour and crispness and we wilted some spinach, adding pine nuts and a dash of cream to it.

Tony, Julie, Mark, Annie & Sara

We had successfully finished everything; all that was left to do was to eat and what a feast we had! The bread was fantastic and light and the tarts were delightfully tasty. My favourite of all was the fish pie. The flavours were sensational and the croutons on the top were a lovely touch. We sampled everything that we cooked and we could fault none of it (all thanks to Mark’s mentoring!). We had a truly fantastic day and, thanks to the team at The Cookery School at Braxted Park, we came away with some fabulous recipes and great skills. I think it’s fair to say that Tony and myself will definitely be back to sample their other courses. These include Thai cooking, Indian cooking, Seafood, Tapas, Desserts and much more. After such a fantastic day, we urge you all to give it a go; it’s well worth it! For more information please visit www.braxtedparkcookery.co.uk Tarte Aux Oignons Rouge provencal

The Hall stands in open countryside, one mile from the village of Ingatestone and substantially retains its original Tudor form and appearance with its mullioned windows, high chimneys, crow-step gables and oak-panelled rooms and is surrounded by ten acres of enclosed gardens comprising extensive lawns, walled garden and stew pond. For a more comfortable, sensual approach to evening wear ditch those tight body-con dresses and take inspiration from this Springs Pyjama Party trend. Stella McCartney exhibited some wonderful pieces on the catwalk – matching three piece suits and exquisite slouchy jumpsuits. Look for pieces in satin and silk that feature a slouchy silhouette. This sumptuous new evening wear option may sound odd but is really worth a try if you want to create a low maintenance yet seductive look. The pieces to look for are pyjama style pants, loose satin trouser suits and dressing gown jackets. This really is a great, relaxed alternative to the traditional trouser suit. Wear this look in a clean, no fuss manor – team with minimal accessories, barely there makeup and a simple hairstyle. Pyjama pants should be worn with a button front top or blouse in a loose, flowing style and look best when either worn tucked in or if they sit just below the trouser line. Wear with skyscraper heels in a matching colour to the outfit; peep totes are perfect as the weather is getting warmer. For a real treat try this Alice and Oliva trouser suit. This deep plum satin suit is wonderfully elegant and bang on trend with its loose cut and nightwear appearance. The high rise cut of the trousers elongates the legs and creates a slim silhouette. Wear with a simple black blouse and court heels. For an edgy twist on a night out use this Zara studded clutch box bag.

Bottega Veneta Menswear SS12

For the Boys

Varieties of blue swarmed the menswear catwalks this Spring. Everything from deep navy, indigo, lapis and fresh, bright azure. Bottega Veneta used blue extensively throughout their menswear collections; displaying head to toe blue looks, even down to accessories. The good thing about this colour is that it comes naturally to a man; it is the stereotypical boys colour like pink is for girls. It is versatile and available to everyone, no matter what age or body type. This versatility extends to trends and styles, for example tailoring. Be brave and try swapping a conventional navy suit with a brighter blue suit. By just going a shade or two lighter you can really reinvent your look for spring. Wear with pastel shirts to compliment the shade or even wear a light blue shirt underneath. By mixing several hues of blue you can create a sharp, slick look. For an adaption on the trend try wearing orange and yellow with the blue for a bright summery appearance. Or for a nautical style pair it with white channelling your inner sailor. River Island currently has an amazing selection of blue pieces. My personal favourite is this cotton navy poacher jacket, perfect for those warmer spring days. For a smart casual take on this trend try these navy chinos by Lacoste. They look incredible worn with either smart brown trainers or brogues. A crisp, clean light blue shirt will really complete the look.

Ask

Dr Jas Have you any worries with your teeth or questions about teeth whitening and veneers? Well Dr Jas is here to help with all your problems, all you need to do is ask! How Can You Do Painless Treatments? All treatments in dentistry can be painful in the wrong hands. The first thing to do is to get a dentist that you feel comfortable with. If you are comfortable with a dentist then you are more likely to trust him or her. Good dentists use topical anaesthetic. This numbs the gum before the local anaesthetic is administered and so you don’t feel the anaesthetic going in. Once you are fully numb there will be no pain during the treatment. Dr Jas Sagoo is very well known for his painless and sympathetic treatments!

What Are Porcelain Veneers? I want to Straighten my teeth, What do you suggest? The first thing to do is find a good cosmetic dentist or orthodontist and book a free consultation. This is not an examination, but it is a chance to ask the dentist what can be done to improve your teeth. Nowadays it is possible to straighten teeth in as little as eight to ten weeks (depending on how far they have to be moved) with the new type of clear brace systems. There are a lot of clear brace systems on the market but two of the most cost effective are Inman Aligner and Clearstep. Clear brace treatment starts from as little as ÂŁ1,500 per arch. If you do not want to wear braces at all Porcelain Veneers is also a very effective way of straightening your teeth!

by coffee, tea, tobacco, red wine and even ageing! Almost anyone can have Teeth Whitening. Teeth Whitening will not change the colour of crowns or fillings. An examination would be carried out before impressions are taken to ensure you are a suitable candidate. The effects can last for up to 18 months but regular top ups can be carried out to ensure your teeth stay white.

For more information contact Perfect Smile Spa visit: www.perfectsmilespa.co.uk or www.askdrjas.com or call on 01708 442 114.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front of natural teeth to improve their shape, appearance and colour. Sometimes known as a smile makeover, porcelain veneers can give you more confidence in your life. The treatment is very straightforward to do and once all the diagnostics and design are all in place can take as little as two weeks to complete.

How does teeth whitening work? Teeth whitening works by lightening the discolouration of enamel and dentine, making your teeth look whiter and brighter. The gel used to whiten your teeth releases oxygen which erases the discolouration. This discolouration can be caused

HEALTH & BEAUTY

STEP 1 - Pick your Moment.

Skin tends to be puffy first thing in the morning thanks to an accumulation of fluid during the night so give it time to settle before you go to work with the razor and you’ll get better results (not to mention fewer nicks and cuts!) Better still, shave after a shower. Steam is great for opening open pores, dislodging dirt and grime and for softening stubble.

STEP 2 - Prepare Properly.

Ask any professional barber what the key to a great shave is and they’ll tell you it’s all in the preparation. Stubble is as tough as copper wire and of the same thickness, so it needs to be adequately softened before shaving. The best way to do that is with plenty of warm water but in order for the hairs to absorb water they, need to be free of any oil secreted by the skin. So cleanse thoroughly first with a face wash like Men-U Healthy Facial Wash 100ml or use Anthony Logistics Glycolic Facial Cleanser 237ml which also exfoliates skin, helping remove razorclogging dead cells. Combine with lots of warm water and massage in. Then pat your face to remove excess water but ensure it’s still slightly damp to the touch.

ith the winter wind still nipping at your faces, it’s important for all you guys to look after your skin. Shaving can be a very irritable so if you guys want to achieve a super-smooth shave then follow these 5 steps from www.mankind.co.uk Grooming Editor, Lee Kingston. 42

STEP 3 - Get yourself into a lather! Shaving creams, like the superlubricating Zirh Shave Cream Jar 250ml, and high-performance gels like Elemis’s Ice Cool Foaming Gel 200ml provide an important ‘cushion’ between your skin and the razor, protecting it from damage by improving razor glide. To maximise their effect start by placing a small blob in the palm of your hand, along with some warm water, and rub together with your other palm to create a lather first. Then spend a minute or so massaging into warm, damp skin with gentle circular motions to help lift hairs. Better still, invest in a good quality shaving brush like Men-U db Premier shaving brush & Chrome stand and use with a shaving soap like Geo F Trumper Wooden Shave Bowl. Not only will this help whip up an unbeatable lather, it’ll also help lift hairs and exfoliate skin in the process. Think of it as a three-in one grooming tool!

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Tip: If you have particularly tough stubble use Dermalogica Pre-Shave Guard 170g as part of your pre-shave routine – it’s specially designed to maximise beard softening whilst protecting skin form razor burn.

STEP 4 - Choose your Weapon!

Like antiques, women and expensive cars, razors need careful handling. To get the most out of yours use light, short and swift strokes, letting the razor do the work. Use the fingers on your free hand to gently stretch the skin in front of the razor and begin by shaving the softer stubble on the cheeks and neck, leaving the toughest bits (usually found around the chin and lips) until last - that way they’ll have had more time to soften and will be much easier to cut. Always shave in the direction of hair growth (if you go against the grain you’ll pull hairs back on themselves, causing unnecessary irritation) and rinse the razor regularly with warm water to prevent clogging. Don’t wipe them with a towel (or toothbrush!) though or you’ll damage the fine shaving edge. Never underestimate the importance of a good quality razor. Invest in a beautifully- weighted one like Acqua Di Parma Collezione Barbiere Shaving Razor & Stand and like an expensive sports car, it’ll handle beautifully especially around those tricky bends! Tip: If you have facial hair to navigate try using a transparent shaving oil like American Crew Lubricating Shave Oil 50ml - it’ll make it much easier for you to see where you’re shaving.

STEP 5 - Rinse and Revive

Once you’ve finished your shave rinse your face thoroughly with cool, running water to close pores and remove any shaving residues. Then gently pat dry with a towel. Never rub as this can irritate the skin. The final stage of your perfect shave is to protect skin with a shaving balm like Lab Series for Men Triple Benefit Post Shave Remedy 50ml. This is a crucial step since shaving doesn’t just remove stubble it removes the top layer of skin cells too and leaves tiny microscopic abrasions as the razor’s blades pass over the uneven surface of the skin. Better than aftershaves, which have a high alcohol content and can irritate and dry sensitive skin, balms immediately soothe it, reducing redness, irritation and razor burn whilst moisturising and re-hydrating. Simply massage in with your fingertips and you’re done! The perfect shave – not quite rocket science but definitely an art!

Which balm is best for you? Complete your shaving routine with one of these specially-tailored post-shave wonders.

If you have spot-prone skin…

Susceptible to spots? Then use Clinique Post Shave Soother (Anti-Blemish Formula) 75ml. As well as containing skinsoothing aloe to treat razor burn it also contains a raft of skin-clearing ingredients to soothe spots and limit future breakouts.

If you suffer from ingrown hairs… Ingrown hairs form when a hair curls back on itself and pierces the skin causing a painful and unsightly bump. To help prevent them use Tend Skin Ingrown Hair Solution 118ml. Utilising professional-strength ingredients it helps release trapped hair and exfoliates skin to prevent pore blockages and further ingrowing.

If you suffer from razor burn…

Sore, red and damaged skin doesn’t just need repairing it needs instantly soothing too. Anthony Logistics Razor Burn Repair 118ml does both, taking the sting out of shaving with the help of Eucalyptus and peppermint oils and a host of restorative vitamins. If you use a razor you should use this too!

addy’s Day is on the horizon and in the good old spirit of Irishness we’ve got a classic Irish Stew to warm all your cockles this March! Enjoy! To make the stock, put the lamb bones in a large heavy-based saucepan with the carrot, onion, celery, herbs, peppercorns and 1 tsp salt. Pour in 3 litres/5 1⁄4 pints water. Bring to the boil and simmer uncovered for 2 hours. Strain the stock through a fine sieve to remove bones and vegetables, then return to the pan. Boil until reduced to about 1.3 litres/21⁄4 pints. (You can make the stock the day before - keep it in a covered container in the fridge, or freeze it for up to 3 months.) To make the stew, cut the lamb into large chunks. Peel the potatoes (keeping both types separate) and cut into pieces of

bones from the lamb 1 large carrot , quartered 1 onion , quartered ½ celery stick, quartered 1 bay leaf 2 large sprigs of thyme a generous sprig of parsley 6 black peppercorns , lightly crushed

similar size to the meat. Put the two different types in separate bowls of water to keep them white. Peel the carrots and cut into slightly smaller pieces. Slice the onions into thick rings. Put the lamb in a large, clean saucepan. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil, skimming off all the impurities from the surface. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes. Add the floury potatoes, carrots and onions. Season generously and simmer for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the waxy potatoes and thyme. Simmer until the lamb is tender (15-20 minutes). Take off the heat, cover (don’t stir) and leave for 15 minutes. (You can make this up to 2 days ahead and keep in the fridge). Garnish and serve.

The History

St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated as a religious holiday in the emerald isle for over 1000 years, but who actually was St. Patrick? Born a Briton, Patrick was brought to Ireland after being captured at the age of sixteen by Irish raiders. It was during his six year captivity, working as a shepherd in County Antrim, where he took solace and comfort in religion and became a devout Christian. Spending countless nights alone, it was here that Patrick allegedly dreamt about converting the Irish to Christians. After escaping his captivity, claiming he heard the voice of God telling him to leave Ireland, Patrick heading down to Wexford to board a ship heading for England. He was a very poorly educated man, after being held captive for so many years, but once settled in Britain he engrossed himself in his studies. Whilst studying in England, it was here where he claimed to have had another ‘revelation’ after, once again, claiming to hear God’s voice telling him to return to Ireland and spread the gospel. Soon after this, Patrick began his religious studies to become a priest, a course that took him 15 years. After his ordination as a priest, Patrick was sent over to Ireland on a duel mission: to minister Christians already living in Ireland and to convert the Irish to Christianity. It was at this time that flocks of people came to Patrick and converted to Christianity, slowly turning Ireland into a Christian country. St. Patrick is better known for driving all the snakes out of Ireland, however this is only metaphorically

speaking. At the time, snakes were the symbol of paganism and it was, in fact, paganism that was driven out of Ireland, rather than snakes themselves. At the age of 76, St. Patrick died on the 17th March 461 after a long and fulfilling life. His death caused the clans of Ireland to fight over his final resting place, but it was his friends that buried his body in a secret grave. Many people believe his final resting place is Downpatrick Co. Down.

The Wearing of the Green

Blue was, originally, the colour of St. Patrick. However over the years, green has been associated with the Irish and the celebrations since the 17th century. It is said that St. Patrick used the threeleaved plant, the Shamrock, to explain the Holy Trinity (The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit) to the Irish pagans. The phrase ‘the wearing of the green’ means literally just that, to wear the Shamrock on ones clothing. A tradition followed by the Irish and one often used in past political demonstrations in the hopes of making a statement.

The Leprechaun

Ireland is steeped in tradition and folklore, most prominently, the Leprechaun! This rather cheeky, crabby, chappy is actually a result of American influence rather than Celtic belief itself (although the Celtic’s did believed in tiny men and women who used their magical powers for good and evil!). It wasn’t until 1959 when Walt Disney released a film called Darby O’Gill and the Little People, which depicted a cranky little leprechaun from Irish Folklore. It was from here that Leprechauns became a recognised symbol of both St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland.

London Celebrations

If you want to get in on the celebrations this year then head down to London for their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year the celebrations fall on Sunday 18th of March, starting at 12pm in Piccadilly and heading through Lower Regents Street, Pall Mall East, Trafalgar Square and ending up in Whitehall. The parade is full of marching bands and floats with all thirty-two Irish counties represented and dressed in their traditional county colours.

Festivities include ceili dancing, traditional Irish music, celebrity MC’s and Irish speakers to teach you the all-important phrases. So, whether your English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh, (or any other nationality for that matter!) just let your hair down and have a good craic this St. Patrick’s day!

Irish Slang

To get you in the swing of things, here are a few phrases and words to help you all get a bit more Irish! he all-new version of the acclaimed Audi super-Avant retains eight-cylinder power for exceptional performance and sporting character. The latest 4.2-litre V8 delivers 450PS at 8,250rpm and 430Nm from 4,000 to 6,000rpm, 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds, governed 155mph top speed and combined MPG 25.7.

LIFESTYLE The merits of a sharp-suited, business-like Audi Avant and the muscle of a high-revving Audi V8 combine again in classic Jekyll and Hyde fashion in the third generation RS 4. Available exclusively in the attractive and accommodating Avant body style, and expected in the UK in September, the RS 4 contradicts its distinctly business-like first impressions with extreme sub-five-second zero to 62mph pace, 174mph capability and exceptionally tenacious quattro all-wheel-drive handling. The Audi RS 4 Avant uses the same high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 engine that powers the RS 5 Coupe. The hand-built 4,163 cc unit with its distinctive red-painted cylinder covers produces 450 PS at 8,250 rpm and maximum torque of 430 Nm from 4,000 to 6,000 rpm, and powers the RS 4 Avant from 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 155 mph, which can be increased to 174 mph if required. No less impressively, it achieves all this while at the same time potentially returning up to 25.7mpg according to the combined cycle test. With its impressive efficiency and long top gear, the standard seven-speed S tronic transmission makes a significant contribution to this uncharacteristic fuel economy. Drivers can let the lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission shift automatically or change gears manually using the selector lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. For explosive starts, drivers can also activate Launch Control, which manages the engagement of the clutch to achieve an optimum starting speed with minimal wheel spin.

Exterior

The exterior design of the RS 4 Avant leaves onlookers in no doubt about its very special

capabilities, without overstating the case. Its hexagonal single-frame grille is set in a frame with a matte aluminium-look finish and its honeycomb insert is finished in high-gloss anthracite. LED daytime running lights encircle the xenon plus units like a clasp in the wedge-shaped headlights. The air flows through large openings divided by crossbars and embedded in a distinctive bumper featuring a motor racing-style splitter edge. When viewed from the side, the chiselled sill extensions and flared wheel arches enable the RS 4 Avant to strike a powerful pose even in profile, and give a nod to the pioneering Audi quattro from back in 1980. The side mirror housings and trim strips have a matte aluminium-look finish, and a discreet roof spoiler ensures the necessary downforce. The distinctive bumpers and the two oval tailpipe caps of the dual exhaust system dominate the rear end and are integrated into an upturned diffuser. A sports exhaust system is available as an extra cost option to deepen the tone of the already deep-seated exhaust note, and where this is fitted the exhaust pipes feature matte black caps. The Audi RS 4 Avant is 20 millimetres longer, 24 millimetres wider and 20 millimetres lower than the standard A4 Avant. It will be available in a choice of eight colours: one solid and one metallic finish, four pearl-effect colours and two special ‘crystal-effect’ colours: Panther Black, which is available from launch, and Prism Silver, which will be available to order later this year. The extensively clad underbody integrates air vents for the seven-speed S tronic transmission and the front brakes.

Interior

The interior of the RS 4 Avant is finished completely in black, with the exception of the roof lining, which is optionally available in Moon Silver. Chrome clasps subtly accentuate switches and control elements. Carbon inlays are standard, with brushed matte aluminium, Aluminium Race, piano black finish or a light stainless steel mesh available as options. The standard heated front sport seats with integrated headrests are power- adjustable and covered in a combination of black leather and Alcantara. Fine Nappa leather in either Black or Moon Silver accentuated with Stone Grey piping is available as an option. Other options include bucket-style ‘super sports seats’ or luxurious,

climate-controlled comfort seats with a ventilation function. The thick ring of the leather multifunction sports steering wheel is flattened at the bottom, and it features shift paddles in an aluminium-look finish. The Driver’s Information System (DIS) with colour display includes an RS menu with a lap timer and an oil temperature gauge. Both it and the MMI monitor display a special RS welcome screen when the car is started. The instrument cluster bezel is finished in gleaming piano black, and the design of the selector knob of the seven-speed S tronic is unique to the RS. Typical of all RS vehicles, the door openers are two delicate bars. The pedals, the footrest, the air vents, the shift paddles on the steering wheel, the MMI buttons and other controls have an aluminium-look finish. Aluminium inserts also adorn the door sill trims, which are accentuated with RS 4 badges. Available to order now with the first few to hit Essex early in September www.audi.co.uk

If you want an image with true depth, then you can’t beat a 3D TV. Star Studded Holidays A Good Year

France, Luberon: Bonnieux, Cucuron and Gordes “Sometimes it takes a change of scenery to have a change of heart.” The setting for ‘A Good Year’ in France was so good it eclipsed everything else in the film. Ridley Scott’s french/british cinematic offering was universally panned, however critics unanimously favoured and agreed on one outstanding aspect of the film: the beautiful european backdrop. Luberon is famed

for its green vineyards, orchards and hilltop towns, often being described as ‘France at its finest’.

Marion Cotillard, go for their date in the film. This beautiful spot is on the south side of the Luberon.

Scenes were primarily filmed at The Château la Canorgue near Bonnieux, which doubled as the dilapidated vineyard Max (Russell Crowe) inherits. Fans of the movie can visit this amazing building, which has been run by a local family for several generations. The château’s winery is renowned for its organic wine in real life, and offers tours and tastings of its produce.

‘A Good Year’ fanatics can also visit the location used for Fanny’s bakery, Hôtel le Renaissance in Gordes. This small restaurant and hotel is situated in a quaint and typically french square, which is gorgeous in summer.

Head to the centre of Cucuron and view the pond where Max and Fanny, played by Crowe and

The effortlessly magnificent and vintage buildings of Luberon will leave you pursuing your own journey of french discovery, and like the film’s main character realise that life is meant to be savoured.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona Spain: Barcelona

“Life is the Ultimate Work of Art” Woody Allen’s award winning film featured a love triangle between some extremely beautiful people in some even more beautiful locations. Audiences were taken on a cinematic tour of Barcelona’s historical hotspots, all of which are screaming out to be visited and combine to make a fantastic tour of the art-adorned city. Indulge in some photography like the films character Cristina, played by Scarlett Johansson, and visit the city’s most fascinating buildings including Gaudi’s Sagrada Família church, and Casa Milà and Casa Batlló which is located on Passeig de Gracia.

The Beach

Thailand: Bangkok and Phi Phi Leh Island “My name is Richard. So what else do you need to know? None of that matters. Not once you cross the ocean and cut yourself loose, looking for something more beautiful, something more exciting and yes, I admit, something more dangerous.” - Richard, The Beach

punctured with caves and peculiar passages, complemented by clear blue lagoons and pockets of coral, this location truly is paradise. You won’t need much more than Phi Phi Leh’s natural resources to have a good time. Although having Leo there as well wouldn’t hurt!

Start your own secret community in Thailand by following in the footsteps of Leonardo DiCaprio, in Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Alex Garland’s The Beach. Phi Phi Island, the primary filming location, will provide you with a feeling of excitement and adventure without going too far off the beaten track.

Thailand’s buzzing and bolshy capital Bangkok also features in the film, with protagonist Richard (Leo) beginning and ending his journey there. Immortalised more recently in The Hangover II, this exuberant city possesses the biggest outdoor market in Asia, a whole wealth of magnificent temples, tantalising food, brilliant bars and the infamous red light district. To really understand what Bangkok has to offer you need to take the plunge and get packing, or in the words of DiCaprio’s character, “cut yourself loose, looking for something more beautiful, more exciting”.

You can expect to live the highs and not the lows of the famous ‘secret island’ myth when on Phi Phi Leh Island; diving and snorkelling are very popular on the island and visitors can enjoy an endless supply of sumptuous fresh fish. With sheer limestone walls

Passeig de Gracia also provides some of the best shops including Chanel, Yves-Saint-Laurent, and Hermès, offering you the chance for you to look très chic on your spanish escapade. The Santa Maria Del Mar

Church in the Ribera district is a brilliant example of Catalan Gothic architecture and also features in the film. Head to Tibidabo amusement park, the oldest of its kind in Barcelona. The park retains most of its original rides, some of which date back to the turn of the 20th century. Scarlett Johansson is seen buying candy floss at the park with Javier Bardem. For dining, head to Can Travi Nou, a 17th century Catalan farmhouse that Vicky, Cristina and Juan Antonio dine in. Els Quatre Gats, which is Catalan for ‘The Four Cats’, is also showcased in the movie and is famous in Barcelona for hosting a variety of art exhibits, including one of the first solo shows by Pablo Picasso. Barcelona echoes the film’s ideal that life can be viewed as a work of art: it is everywhere; in buildings, in churches, in cities and in travel.

The Panel

On first arriving at The Harrow, we were welcomed in and treated to a fantastic array of food and wine, all beautifully presented and served by their very attentive staff. We were treated to a delightful beef lasagne and BBQ chicken and bacon, all served with a generous portion of chips, peas, salad and garlic bread. The atmosphere was buzzing and the pub was packed with contestants and their supporters all waiting for the competition to begin. The night was in support of FSID, The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths, after a friend of The Harrow tragically lost their baby to the condition, a worthy cause you can still donate money too. Just head over to The Harrow’s Facebook page and help raise money for this fantastic cause. After enjoying the food, it was time for our Annie to take her place on the judging panel. Joined by RBM South’s Colin Brown, The Huntsman and Hounds general manager, Paul Brace and Hazel Musgrove from RBM North, twelve contestants took to the stage and with pens at the ready, the contest began.

ove over X Factor, there is a new singing contest in town! Yes, all of Essex headed down to the 2011 Havering Pub of the Year, The Harrow Hornchurch, for the first regional heat of the E Factor. With our very own Art Editor, Annie, on the judging panel we all waited in anticipation to see what talent lay ahead.

After listening to the first handful of singers, we wondered if we would ever find the gem we were looking for. Then after sifting through a few more performers, Nicole Webley took to stage and belted out an amazing rendition of Lady Gaga’s, Edge of Glory, and blew us all away. She was definitely on our ‘to see again’ list! After a quick break and a couple of refreshments, the panel took to their seats once again. With the crowd cheering and excitement rife, contestant after contestant faced the panel and performed their best song. This round was much stronger than the first with singer after singer oozing with talent, and who says Essex hasn’t got talent?! This made a difficult decision for the judges and after all twelve contestants had performed, they now had to narrow down the hopefuls to the final three.

performance and it was now down the judges to pick the winner. All three finalist were more than worthy to take this heat but after careful consideration, the fabulous Nicole Webley was crowned the winner. The night had been a fantastic success and was enjoyed by everyone. The Harrow had been a great host and we are now looking forward to the final of The E Factor at The Railway Hotel, Hornchurch, on March 24th. RM Magazine would like to congratulate Nicole Webley and wish her all the best for the final. For more information visit www.emberinns.co.uk and to donate money to FSID, please visit The Harrow’s Facebook page for more information.

After lots of deliberation, the final three were chosen. Singers Jemma George, Nicole Webley and Charlotte Dawson were the lucky contestants who made it through to the final for their chance to win this heat and £100. The competition had just got serious! With the audience waiting with baited breath, the first of the three girls took to the stage. This was going to be a difficult decision! All three girls delivered a great

They are a band who are always searching for new sounds, discovering their own presence, finding their feet and setting their horizons. At the moment this seems to be pretty limitless with the amount of doors that are being opened to them. Gigs and live performances are the best way to channel their energy, as they are now dipping their toes into the London scene.

Playing the Waters Rats, The Bowery and Proud Camden with The Shorditch and the 229 night club on Great Portland street all in store for the coming weeks. To aid the bands ermergance onto the music scene they have been found on the radio waves promoting unrecorded tracks giving a taster of what is yet to come from the local Upminster boys. The band only started their journey last February when old friends Jon Bounds and Jack Bryan met on a train and shared some musical projects which

the

were on their phones. Within the twenty five minute journey on the 18.22 train from London Fenchurch Street they concluded that they would best suit working together than as separate artists. Jack met up with Jon and his band the following week to find the room was filled with faces of old skateboarding friends, school friends and even neighbours including Joe Lamb, Sam Hollick, Richard Smith and Craig Deane. From then on they have been together working on getting the sound they are most happy with.

The 87 have not long finished recording their EP, although this isn't their finished work. They chose to record as these were the four songs they wrote as a band and decided to record a demo, bottle them and labelled it, Demonstration Exploration EP! This was a real fun process for the early days of the band, getting used to recording studios and understanding what is required from a recorded

song. With this all now up their sleeves, they are off to Brighton in early March to record a favourite track of ours called ‘Tornado’. The lads have recently won their heats in the Essex Battle of the Bands and have been projected through to the Grand Final where the winner of the grand final gets to support the Essex based act - ‘Missing Andy’. As well as keeping themselves busy with gigs they are ready to film their first music video, Found at Home, as Craig the piano player has been in France for the past few months! These Upminster based lad have incredible sound and have a really bright future ahead of them!
