ESSEX FASHION WEEK

APRIL BANBURY

This year, Easter Sunday was not only a chance to party in celebration of the long weekend but it was also a chance to visit the Local Technology Centre Ceme in Rainham, where some of the county’s finest and most fabulously dressed residents came out to strut their stuff at Essex Fashion Week! Just when we thought last year’s event couldn’t be topped, event organisers Adam and Simon Ryan, Danielle Bigaignon, Joe Seely and Ali Salim definitely upped their game. The VIP experience was complete with complimentary champagne, a gorgeous candy bar and even a very Essex themed shopping hall where guests were able to browse through a glam range of clothing, lingerie, accessories and jewellery. There were some familiar faces to be spotted including TOWIE stars Harry Derbidge, Amy Childs (who was showcasing her very own collection on the Catwalk) and even Nanny Pat, who treated guests to a photo and some of her famous words of wisdom! Other celebs included Romeo from the So Solid Crew, entertainer David Van Day and Britain’s Got Talent Star Tony Roberts.

Pointy Brown Shoes: Creator Joey Bevan is a key designer for show ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and was showing his 1st catwalk show here at EFW! The range included printed, striped and floral underwear in very 50s shapes and styles. Each piece is bespoke and all pieces are made from remnants of fabric! Karen Karmody: A girly, glitzy and glamorous array of women’s eveningwear Wag World- Yep, that’s right, a fab range of clothing inspired by the likes Of Coleen Rooney, Victoria Beckham, Abbie Clancy and co. taken note of the hottest trends and new up and coming designers of Essex - some of these brands are really going places! The evening was rounded off with a charity raffle in aid of Cancer Research, with the glam Amy Childs handing prizes to each of the winners- with proceeds going to a very worthy cause. But that was by no means the end of the day. For the hardcore party-goers, Doneao and Unity UK wowed the crowds and a DJ set had been arranged to kick off the after party, with everyone involved dancing the night away. A well earned prize for months of hard work and preparation- we definitely can’t wait until next season’s spectacular day of Essex Fashion!

With Love, Jess Wright- Concluding the show was another TOWIE-famous range. Jess showed a whole range of sugarysweet lingerie, swim wear and nightwear. Models even carried giant lollipops to set the scene! And, that was it for the catwalks, I hope you have

fashion APRIL BANBURY: APRIL BANBURY DESIGNS

“I was given this opportunity to showcase my work at Essex Fashion Week as someone saw my designs and offered to invest in me to do it, so they paid for me to be here showcasing my designs. I thought the show went really well, although I spent most of it backstage dressing the models! I think because of the amount of exposure Essex has had over the past year or so, it was a great place for my designs to be seen. All of my designs are bespoke and handmade so no matter what your style or shape, I can make a dress that looks great and fits perfectly. “

DANNY GREEN: 4TH KINGDOM

“The brand itself is created in Essex and I’m from Essex too. It is very new and young and I thought what better way to showcase it for the first time than at Essex Fashion Week. I thought it went really well. This was my first show so I wasn’t expecting it to be of such a high standard, but I was really impressed with it.”

JOEY BEVAN: POINTY BROWN SHOES

“The night went really, really good. It’s always good to be apart of Essex Fashion Week and because I’m from Baslidon originally, I like to come here and show everyone my designs. I showcase all over the world but it’s nice to come back to your home county and do your bit! I think the collection went down a treat. At Essex Fashion Week there are a lot of boutiques and retail branches so it’s nice to present something more high fashion so people get a bit of London Fashion Week at Essex Fashion Week.”

CARLIE LINDA FRANCIS: KANDI CLOTHING “My brand has been associated with Essex as we have done a lot of stuff with the TOWIE girls, Amy Childs and Harry [Derbridge]. We love Essex Fashion Week as it is and we come back because we get a lot from it and a lot of publicity. The sales of Kandi Clothing do go up after we’ve been at EFW and we just love it here! I think our show was really different. Everyone was saying it was short and sweet and we did giveaways as well, which the crowd loved. We didn’t want to do the usual walk up and down the catwalk, so we decided to dance up and down it instead!”

BEHIND THE SCENES Models, make-up artists, hairdressers, you name it; there is a lot that goes into making Essex Fashion Week such a massive hit. So, we caught up with some of the designers backstage to find out their views on the show and why they chose Essex Fashion Week as a platform to showcase their brands.

fashion Jess Wright

No event is pulled off so well without a team of talented and determind individuals behind it. We grabbed a few words with Danielle Bigaignon to find out how the EFW team made the night such a HUGE success....

Deperate Scousewives

Firstly, congratulations on delivering yet another mind-blowing show! What was your aim for this year’s EFW?

We wanted to make sure EFW was bigger and better than last year’s show so we changed to a fresh venue which increased our capacity. We also made sure our catwalk line up appealed to everyone, from womenswear to menswear and accessories to lingerie, so that there was a nice mix of fashion that held everyone’s attention throughout the whole show. A new thing we did this year was our EFW Mall which consisted of deisgners promoting and selling their products on stalls, and this proved to be a big hit with all of our guests!

Ruby, The Face of Essex Winner

The RM Team Jeff Brazier

The EFWTeam

Did you expect the fantastic reaction you’ve received this year? We are always really chuffed with the amount of support we receive at each event so every year we are still overwhelmed with the huge turnout and the amount of positive feedback from not just our audience but celebrities and designers too.

Dr Jas Sagoo and Lauren Goodger

What has it been like to be apart of such a massive event?

I am very proud to be part of such a successful business that has really taken off from the word go. I am lucky to be surrounded by such a good team of people, because without them, EFW would never work as we all have key roles to play in making the event a success. It is extremely hard work and takes us all a week to recover but looking back it is well worth it and we already cant wait for the next one!

What would you say was your highlight of the night?

The highlight of my night was definitely Donaeo, who performed at our after party, and also Unity UK from Got to Dance who pulled out an amazing performance for everyone. I was also lucky enough to model on the catwalk for the accessories section this year which was a great experience!

BGT’s Tony Roberts

So, where can you go from this and what can we expect to see for Autumn/Winter?

Autumn Winter 2012 is set to kick off in October and dates will be revealed very soon. We will definitely pull out all the stops once again with a fresh venue, new designers and another line up of great DJ's and acts for the after party. Follow us on Twitter @EssexFashionWk to keep up to date on the latest information about our next event and also check out www.essexfashionwk.com. We also look forward to seeing you guys at RM Magazine next time, and thanks for being a great support to us!

fashion Claire Barratt at home

Tell us about the story behind ClaireaBella? Why did you invent her?

I went to Paris with my then boyfriend, Jon, who is now my husband and we had a caricature drawn at the ‘Place du Tertre’ in Paris, overlooking the ‘Sacre-Couer’. Anyway, it was hilarious and is now framed on our wall in our home. The artist captured me perfectly. Growing up people used to say that I had lovely almond shaped eyes and long lashes, and the street artist portrayed this so well. I love that drawing. I used to say to Jon that I would love that image to be with me on clothing etc as it had sentimental value to me. I set about creating ME, well my version of me, in drawings - and then had the idea of drawing it onto my own personal bag. I did this and it grabbed so much attention. The aBella girl was born! And after people started seeing the bags, word began to spread and the orders came flooding in!

Where do you get your design influence?

CLAIREABELLA DESIGNS: FROM HOME COMFORTS TO CELEBRITIES AND CATWALKS 12 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

It may sound cliché, but my imagination, I was not very academic at school. I got by, but my passion has always been art! I always think with glitter, colours and the wow factor in mind. My thought process is “would I wear this?”, “would I love this?” , “would I be proud to own this?” Also “will the bag draw attention?” If all of the above are a “yes” my design, be it a beach theme or winter theme, comes out of my mind and onto paper or a bag. The aBella's are living dolls that take many forms, all from my over active flamboyant mind!

fashion What matters to you most as a designer?

People being proud to wear and use what I create, to make people smile, to hear a scream when they see their bag and themselves in the form of an aBella girl! But mostly to continue to make people smile!

How do you manage family life with running a fast growing fashion brand?

I'm often called superwoman! It's hard, very hard. Our children are quite young, so an example would be me sitting here answering these questions and having two of my five children in each ear. Multi-tasking is the way I live. I sometimes do six things at once. I don't have any glam time really. Nine times out of ten I'm doing the school run covered in paint, glitter and with un-brushed hair. It's hard but I do it. I just sometimes feel like I'm on a roundabout going round and round, ha ha. Sometimes I just stop, breathe and think “wow, that was a manic day and I’ve not even had time to eat”. I manage though, I have to, It's all done for our children.

Were there ever times when you felt like giving up?

Yes, and yes again! I've sat sobbing with the sheer stress and pressure of orders and things going at a million miles an hour. Jon has been my rock! That man’s shoulders are massive! Without him I would have crumbled months ago. All I ever say is “I'm just Claire from Hull”, and I am. I'm still getting used to all this.

You showcased your designs at this year’s Essex Fashion Week. Why did you choose this as a platform to push your brand?

You have recently collaborated with ToxicFox.co.uk – How did that relationship begin?

The management team at ToxicFox.co.uk had seen Chloe Sims from TOWIE wearing one of my bags. We got in touch with them as we wanted to expand, and as we were only a husband and wife team at the time we didn't know where to start. We spoke in depth, met up, and the ClaireaBella hoodies were born. Since then the relationship has grown and we are a very strong team now, all with huge aspirations for the ClaireaBella brand! The brand has evolved massively with help of ToxicFox.co.uk. They have helped launch ClaireaBella Phonecases, Lunchboxes, Candles and even Chocolate Bars, all of which are exclusively available from ToxicFox.co.uk. It’s been a great partnership.

What is it like turning a hobby into an international brand?

It's “WOW! Is this real?” is a question I'm often asking myself. It's a dream come true and my family and children are so proud! Like my mum said when I started this, "From a tiny acorn, grows a big oak tree"

What are you plans for the future?

Now that would be telling, ha ha. To continue making people smile by doing what I do - hopefully all over the world! www.claireabelladesigns.co.uk www.toxicfox.co.uk/Claireabella

TOWIE’s Chloe

Essex Fashion Week is a great platform for us, as it was on the programme ‘The Only Way is Essex’ that the bags first entered the public eye. It's going back to my roots a little. Although the brand is now growing at a massive rate, Essex was where ClaireaBella first made headlines! I love Essex, I took my aBella home to showcase her!

How do you think your show went?

Really well, although I was shaking so badly that my models were pep talking me and really supporting me! I loved every second and thought the show went amazingly well. We shall certainly be attending again!

STYLE

FOR THE GIRLS

GURU

The current vintage Americana trend evokes images of 1950s USA – a more affluent era. Step away from the current recession with a look that oozes glamour! Think bold, pastel colours and fun prints such as ginghams and plaids. Silhouettes are ultra sexy and feminine. Look for nipped in waists and knee lengths hems. Be brave and bare your midriff - but in a subtler way. This trend is all about ultra high waistbands, so the focus is on the skinniest part of the waist. A glimpse of flesh is all that is needed this season. Team crop tops with high waisted pencil skirts and leg lengthening court heels. Prada exhibited the most fun collection with their cartoon car pieces in light pastel hues. Their flame backed heels were simply amazing. The most important accessory for this trend is a pair of cat’s-eye sunglasses.

Prada Womenswear SS12

Cat’s Eye Tinted Sunglasses £9.50 www.marksandspencers.com Capturem Sunglasses Primark Car Print Skirt £12 www.primark.co.uk

FOR THE BOYS

Try buying several pairs in different shades to match any outfit. Try these cat’s eye tinted sunglasses by Marks and Spencers, available in nude or pink. For a cheap yet bang on approach to this trend try Primark. Their range of Prada-esque car print pieces are great and so similar to the designer, just without the hefty price tag!

Get the hottest style tips from RM’s very own Style Guru, Kate Chennells from Dress Me Vintage in Romford.

A top trend for men this season is the 1990s trend. Think garish prints, florescent brights and sportswear pieces teamed with quirky accessories. This trend is all about channelling the 1990s without overdoing it – take a small influence from the era and modernise it. For a modern take on the short shorts of this era try some knee grazing brightly coloured ones with folded hems. With denim, stick to light blue pieces, leaning towards the stone wash and acid wash looks. When it comes to tops and jumpers look for bold patterns and prints. Vintage logo and sports jumpers work well and evoke an American feel. Checked flannel shirts in neutral tones also encourage a vintage vibe. Urban Outfitters is the place to go for t-shirts. They have a wide range in various prints and styles. For a subtle approach try one with just a flash of print, enough to channel the trend without looking overdone. With footwear try pumps or plimsoles in either black or white or for a real authentic vibe try some hi-top trainers. Try these Nike ones available from Asos for a burst of fluorescent colour. Accessories are a must for this trend. Think baseball caps, Casio watches and Aztec print backpacks..

THIS SEASON’S

fashion

So, you’re ultra prepared and have your summer wardrobe all sorted already. Well done you! But have you thought about investing in some of this season’s hot-off-the-catwalk super bright shoes to liven up even the soggiest days of the British summer? 16 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Acid tones are so this season, as are bold, bright and full-on florals. But if you aren’t quite the type to embrace these new hues, and feel more at home in blacks and neutrals, shoes are a fab way to add a dash of colour without doing the top-to-toe. Limes and aqua marines work really well with nudes and pale pinks, while blacks, silvers and navys look fab teamed with hot pink and tangerine. We have selected a whole rainbow of plain and printed shoes to tempt you, but which ones will you choose?

ASK DR JAS

Have you any worries with your teeth or questions on having fillers? Well Dr Jas is here to help with all your problems, all you need to do is ask! immediately, a cosmetic filling could be placed. This may last for a while but could chip off if you are not extremely careful. If it was a trauma then the nerve of the tooth could be damaged. In this case it may be necessary to treat the damaged nerve before placing a crown on the tooth. This can be all done very quickly and painlessly so you can get on with your everyday life!

I have Been Afraid Of Dental Visits Since Childhood. What Can I Do? Dental treatment has improved greatly in the last few years. There is no longer any pain during dental treatment owing to the vast improvement in dental anaesthetics and the equipment used by our dentist Dr Jas. Our dental practice is not as clinical as others! We will give much more time and care in finding out more about each individual patient, their fears and concerns. The treatment is done at the patients own speed so that they do not feel under pressure while in the dental chair. And you can always have conscious sedation so you are completely unaware of your appointment!

What Can I Do To Fix A Badly Chipped Front Tooth? There are several ways that you can fix a badly chipped front tooth. Firstly we will ascertain as to how you may have chipped the tooth. Was it a trauma, such as a fall or was it caused by eating or biting into something very hard like a cherry pip or an olive stone? To make the tooth look better

and thoroughly examine you before recommending treatment. The treatment itself is not painful in any way as fillers have an anaesthetic actually in the product which reduces discomfort and swelling. The results are amazing and immediate! The effects can last 6 to 18 months!

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD… Don’t let ugly feet destroy your holidays this summer. Get them ship shape and ready for the sandle season with these tips from www.mankind.co.uk Grooming Editor, Lee Kynaston. STEP 1: EXFOLIATE Most men neglect their feet during the winter and that plays havoc with their appearance come the strip-off season. Ill-fitting shoes, hours spent tearing around a football pitch and general wearand-tear cause calluses to build up on the heels and skin becomes dry, rough and unsightly. Sorting this out is simple though. Start by removing dead skin and calluses with TWEEZERMAN 3 IN 1 PEDICURE TOOL or the Zwilling Pedro Callus Stone (to make the process simpler soak feet first in warm soapy water). Not only will removing this dead skin make your plates look better, it’ll make them healthier too. If left, dead skin can become soggy, making it a perfect home for bacteria and fungal spores.

Top Tip

Tweezerman 3 in 1 Pedicure Tool £15

health & beauty STEP 3: TRIM

STEP 2: MOISTURISE Just as your face needs moisturising, so do your feet. In fact, our extremities often have some of the driest skin on our bodies. But since the skin on your feet can be up to four times thicker than the skin on your face you need a specially formulated foot moisturiser like GEHWOL FOOT CREAM EXTRA 75ML which intensively cares for dry skin. Or try Australian Bodycare Hand & Foot Cream 100ml which also contains antibacterial Tea Tree Oil to keep feet fresh and healthy. Gehwol Foot Cream Extra 75ml £6.23

Neglect your toenails and it says you don’t care about the finer details – or (worse still) the bits of you that don’t often see the light of day. So keep yours looking in tip-top condition by investing in TWEEZERMAN STAINLESS STEEL NAIL SCISSORS. Their specially curved blades make nail clipping a cinch. Start by soaking your feet in warm water for a while to soften the nails – this makes them much easier to cut. Always cut each nail straight across the top, from edge to edge and avoid cutting down the side of the nails as this will only encourage the nail to grow inwards. If you’re a perfectionist, it’s worth spending a couple of minutes gently softening the edges with Tweezerman Nail Block. Not only does this improve the look of the nails but it also means you won’t end up with socks (and sheets!) sliced to ribbons. TOP TIP: If you are unfortunate enough to end up with an ingrowing toenail (where the nail cuts into the skin) treat with Gehwol Ingrown Toenail Fluid 15ml. Tweezerman Nail Block £8

THREE SOLUTIONS FOR STINKY FEET! With over 250,000 sweat glands producing up to half a cup of sweat a day, it’s little wonder feet become a bit whiffy sometimes. Here are three products from footwear specialist Gehwol to keep them smelling sweet.

GEHWOL DEODORANT FOOT CREAM 75ML- This medicated

deodorant foot cream offers long-lasting protection against odour-causing bacteria (as well as against fungi) and keeps feet moisturised and supple too. Gehwol Foot Powder 100g £5.62

GEHWOL FOOT POWDER 100G

Tweezerman Stainless Steel Nail Scissors £20

STEP 4: PROTECT Unlike our hands, our feet barely see the light of day for most of the year, making them especially vulnerable to sunburn. What’s more, studies have shown that the survival rate of patients with malignant melanoma of the foot is significantly lower than if the melanoma is elsewhere on the body – partly because we simply don’t spot them in time. So check your feet regularly for any unusual moles and if you’re heading for the beach, don’t forget to protect feet with a sun cream like ANTHONY LOGISTICS SUN SPRAY SPF15 177ML. Anthony Logistics for Men Sun Spray SPF15 177ml £14.99

Ideal for keeping feet fresh and dry this disinfectant powder is easy to use and can be used to freshen shoes and trainers too. Gehwol Foot Powder 100g £5.62

GEHWOL FOOT DEO 150ML

Not only does this highperformance foot spray deodorise, with the herbal extracts from Camomile and Peppermint, it instantly refreshes tired feet too. Especially good for summer. Gehwol Foot Deo 150ml £9.70

THE MILK Quickly earning a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting live bands, The Milk are storming the music world with their soulful tunes and captivating sound. Hailing from Essex, this four piece will be spending the summer playing festivals such as T in The Park, Isle of Wight and Evolution, and were also nominated for the Best Breakthrough Artist at the UK Festival Awards. RM caught up with lead guitarist Dan to ask why we should all be raving about them‌

exclusive interview

You are just at the beginning of your mammoth twenty-eight day UK tour, how are things going for you?

Absolutely amazing, it’s going really well. We are on our 26th gig tonight; we’ve been touring for a month. It’s been really overwhelming. We’ve turned up at towns, played a good show and people are really responding to what we are doing. It’s all very exciting being on the road, you know, partying every night!

32 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Have you requested anything for your tour bus?

We are running on a budget so we haven’t asked for anything extravagant. I think we’ve got a DVD player, that should keep us entertained. We can watch a few films to keep us company.

You have just brought out a new single, ‘Broke up the Family’, to coincide with your tour. What’s the story behind it?

The song has been around for a year and a half and I think if you listen to the lyrics you can tell what it’s about. It’s just a social commentary about when you feel out of place.

What do you think make this song different from all the others out there? I think it harks back to an old school attitude to music and we’re a really old school band. We are out there touring it

exclusive interview hard. Even though we are signed to a major record company we are doing it the old way, going out there and building up momentum and putting on big shows. I think the single reflects that. It’s just good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll with some tweaks and hip-hop beats. I think it is different to what is going on out there at the moment. It’s all pop songs by numbers that seem to be flooding the charts at the moment, and we think we are doing something a bit different to the norm.

Tell us about your sound and how you got together.

We go way back. Two of the guys are brothers and we all started to play in bands when we were at school at about twelve, thirteen years old. We knocked around in a few different bands. We were a punk band for a bit then we went our separate ways for a couple of years. About three years ago we put on a club night in Southend playing Trojan and Motown records. The club night was dreadful as no one turned up but we had a great night! From there we put together some songs and a year later we had a catalogue of music, so we got a manager and it has just really snowballed from there.

Who and what are the main influences for the band?

It varies throughout the group but we take influence from currents bands like The Black Keys, as well as other stuff like Trojan records, Motown records and rock n roll. We are influenced by loads of different flavours and styles.

died and we were stuck with The Milk. Before we knew it we had a fan base and the label were like ‘you can’t change it’!

“IT’S JUST GOOD OLD FASHIONED ROCK ‘N’ ROLL WITH SOME TWEAKS AND HIP-HOP BEATS...” You are all Essex born and bred. How important is where you grew up in relation to your music and lyrics?

It’s more about the lyrics really as they are the stories of our lives based around our towns in Essex. The whole album is placed there, and the cinematic descriptions are about us all coming from Essex. The lyrics are forged from our lives growing up there but the sound is influenced more by rock ‘n’ roll and American music.

Where is the best place you have played?

We played a club called Soyo in Sheffield and it was absolutely raucous! There were 350 people banging into the stage and all sorts! It was absolutely rocking!

So what should our readers look forward to hearing from you in the near future?

Well our single is out now and we’ve got our album coming out in the middle of the summer. We are also playing at quite a few festivals, T in the Park, Isle of Wight, Evolution Festival and a few others. We are going to be touring all summer and we have another tour in September. We are really just going to be out there promoting our music.

You can catch The Milk playing at Chinnerys, Southend on Sea on June 2nd. For more information or to book tickets go to www.thisisthemilk.com.

Where are your favourite places to go out in Essex?

Favourite places in Essex? Leigh on Sea is really nice and I’ve been known to go to Brentwood and Billericay on a night out.

Your sound has changed quite a bit since you first started out playing. What made you change from a punk to a Motown sound? Well punk is a really easy genre of music for a young person to play; you haven’t really got to think about what you’re doing. It’s quite gratifying when you’re seventeen, eighteen and you can play music.

But when we were getting back home, we weren’t listening to Sex Pistols records, we were listen to Van Morrison and stuff like that, so we thought maybe we should think about doing something else.

Where does the name ‘The Milk’ come from?

It wasn’t very thought out. We were on one of them band name generators and they were chucking out names. We had a few names for a while, Kenny Cornflake and The Milk came up but then Kenny

MORTGAGE REVIEW

Getting on the property ladder with shared home ownership schemes

Expert advice on EVERY lender deal

Paul Flavin from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd comments on shared ownership schemes which can help buyers get on to the property ladder. “If you want to buy a home but can’t quite afford to, a shared ownership scheme could help. How does shared ownership work? You buy between 25% and 75% of the full value of the property and pay rent on the remaining share which is owned by a housing association. The annual rent is up to 3% of the value of the proportion owned by the housing association. Example of shared ownership Cost: Share of home Property Purchase Price: ÂŁ100,000 Your share of the value: ÂŁ50,000 / 50% Housing association share ÂŁ50,000 / 50% What happens if I want to buy a bigger share or all of the value of the property? After you have bought your first share you can usually go on to buy an increased share of the value of the property until you own the whole of the property. This is called staircasing.

36 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

How do I find out more about buying shared ownership? As not all lenders offer shared ownership mortgages it is important that you seek advice from an independent mortgage adviser. They will be able to confirm whether you qualify, which lenders offer shared ownership mortgages and whether you meet their lending criteria. You can then start looking for shared ownership properties for sale in your area. To find out more about shared ownership or to discuss your options as a first time buyer, please call Paul Flavin from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd on 01702 423900 or e.mail paul@miurafiinancial.co.uk. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. There will be a fee for mortgage advice. The actual amount you pay will depend upon your circumstances. The fee is up to 1% but a typical fee is £295. MAB 5285

THE NAGS HEAD

BRENTWOOD

Nestled just on the edge of Brentwood, The Nags Head is a chilled haven where you can sit back, relax and enjoy some great food. RM Magazine was invited down to sample their new Spring Menu.

decision-making we finally knew what we would have. For starters we chose; Cream of Fennel Soup with Croutons, Red Onion Compote Tarte, Seared Black Pearl Scallops and Button Mushrooms with Pino Grigio, Cream and Garlic.

THE VENUE

On arriving at The Nags Head, we were warmly welcomed in and treated to their vast selection of beers and ciders, and shown to a table in the bar where we took a sneak peak at what the menu and specials had to offer. From steaks, fish and grills, to pizzas, pastas, salads and chicken dishes, this menu had such a great choice of food it was hard to decide what to try!

For our mains we chose; Pan Fried Sea Bass fillet with Broccoli, Pesto and White Chicory, Piccante Pizza, Ribeye Steak with Horseradish and Parsley Butter and Fillet Steak Garni with Confit Tomatoes, Mushrooms and Hand Cut Jenga Chips. From the happy diners surrounding us we knew the food was of very high standard, so we had great expectations, and the Nags Head failed to disappoint! The presentation was exceptional, the kind of dish you’d expect to see at a Michelin starred restaurant, with flavours to match. The steaks were cooked perfectly to our requirements and the portions were of a healthy size. After two courses we were all ready to pop but we still had to sample the desserts! On recommendation from General Manager Anderson Ferreira, we went for the light option of Gelato

and Sorbetti and Chocolate Brownie (the not so light option but totally delicious!). Once again the presentation was fantastic and the flavours did not disappoint. For those of you with bigger appetites, the Menu also offered Lemon Tarte, Brulee and Summer Berry Eton Mess.

THE X FACTOR

The Nags Head has a great selection of food, wine and drinks, and with a main dish setting you back between £10 and £24, the price is not bad either! They also offer a Lunch and Early Evening Menu for £12.95 for two courses, and on Wednesdays you can grab a quality steak and get 50% off a selection of red wine; well you can’t grumble at that! So if you are looking for a place where you can eat great foods, drink great wine and relax with friends, then the Nags Head is definitely one to try!

For more information please visit www.thenagsheadbrentwood.co.uk or to reserve a table call 01277 260005.

The pub itself had a great feel. It had all the charm and features of a traditional pub but with a refreshing, modern lift that gave it a great atmosphere to eat in. They had a great wine list too, with selections of red, white, rose, sparkling and champagne, with the option to buy a smaller bottle if required.

THE FOOD

We were shown to our table in the restaurant and spent a little while deliberating. After some hard

lifestyle out; it also offers fantastic food and drinks during the day. Serving Paddy and Scott’s coffee, you can sit back and relax whilst enjoying smoothies, milkshakes, cakes and fruit teas. Breakfast is also available with a choice of Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, Cumberland Sausage, a Bacon Buttie and Morning Pastries.

PLATFORM 7

If you are after a bigger feast, you can opt for the bar food or lunch menu, which include sandwiches, soup, rustic breads, Pom Adoro and Aglio (hand stretch pizza breads). Plus you can even get your beloved Sunday roast at a pocket friendly price of £7.95.

Situated in a perfect position next to Upminster Train Station, Platform 7 is a great place to party your way through the night or simply chill out during the day. RM Magazine was invited down to sample the nightlife and to see what Platform 7 has to offer.

44 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

Platform 7 is placed in a great position and after jumping off the train at Upminster Station it was a pleasant surprise not to have to grab a cab to get to our destination. Within a few simple steps we were already there. The location of the bar makes it a great place for after work drinks, and being a frequent user of Upminster Train Station, the bar is often heaving as I walk past. Tonight was no different. Before we had even entered, swarms of people were flocking, all looking for a great night. As soon as we stepped inside it was easy to see why it was so busy. The music was pumping, drinks were flowing and everyone was lapping up the highenergy atmosphere. The DJ was blasting out some great tunes and to top it off, we were treated like VIPs all night - and you can be too! Table service is on offer and tabs can be opened to ensure you get the best out of your night, and I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t want that! Platform 7 also offers a great array of drinks and is a glamourous venue to enjoy cocktails. With an illustrious selection of spirits, wines, champagnes and beers, there is a tipple for everyone. You can even opt for their drinks packages where you can purchase bronze, silver, gold or platinum options, all including bottles of spirits and wines. But Platform 7 doesn’t just offer a great night

We left the venue with wobbles in our steps and smiles on our faces (all signs of a good night out!), with the definite intention of returning soon. If it’s a great night out you’re after, with fine drinks and good company, Platform 7 offers a smart, sophisticated atmosphere with a base line pumping vibe that everyone’s after. So, we urge all you party lovers to give it a try. We know you won’t be disappointed! For more information visit www.platform7bar.co.uk

2 x 350g/12oz pieces of thick monkfish fillet 750g/1½lb new potatoes, scraped clean 2 tbsp/1fl oz/30ml olive oil 85ml/3fl oz extra virgin olive oil, plus extra to serve 50g/2oz watercress sprigs, very roughly chopped To Serve: Balsamic vinegar Sea salt flakes Black pepper, coarsely crushed

ROAST MONKFISH WITH CRUSHED POTATOES, OLIVE OIL AND WATERCRESS ay is upon us and we have another bank holiday on the horizon. So we’ve brought you a fab little monkfish dish, perfect to enjoy whilst lazing around.

M

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 6, season the monkfish with some salt and set it aside for 15 minutes. Cook the potatoes in well-salted boiling water until tender. While the potatoes are cooking, heat the 2 tbsp/1fl oz/30ml of olive oil in a large, ovenproof frying pan. Pat the monkfish dry on kitchen paper, add to the pan and sear for 3-4 minutes, turning it 3 or 4 times, until nicely browned on all sides. Transfer the pan to the oven and roast for 10-12 minutes, until the fish is cooked through but still moist and juicy in the centre.

Remove from the oven, cover with foil and set aside for 5 minutes. When the potatoes are done, drain them well and return them to the pan with the extra virgin olive oil. Gently crush each potato against the side of the pan with the back of a fork until it just bursts open. Season with salt and pepper, add any juices from the fish and the watercress, and turn over gently until the watercress is well mixed in. Cut the monkfish across into thick slices. Spoon the crushed potatoes on to 4 warmed plates and put the monkfish on top. Put your thumb over the top of the bottle of extra virgin olive oil and drizzle a little of it around the outside edge of each plate. Do the same with the balsamic vinegar and then sprinkle around a few sea salt flakes and coarsely crushed black pepper.

Top Tip... If you love your spice, then throw in a

few chillies for good measure just before you roast the monkfish. Add a sprinkle of Parmesan too!

The ML 63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-litre bi-turbo direct-injection V8 engine delivering 525 hp and 700 Nm of torque – or 557 hp and 760 Nm with the optional AMG Performance Package (£6,165). Even in standard specification this is sufficient to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds, a time which puts it on a par with many high-performance sports cars. Thanks to the ingenuity of the engineers at AMG, the ML 63 AMG is almost 40 per cent more economical and emits nearly 30 per cent less CO2 than the previous model. The responsive and intelligent AMG Speedshift Plus 7-G Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission, featuring a Controlled Efficiency driving mode and ECO start/stop function, contributes towards combined economy of 23.9 mpg, with CO2 emissions pared down to 276 g/km. Modifications to ensure that the chassis of the ML 63 AMG is more than a match for the prodigious performance include AMG sports suspension and high-performance brakes with internally ventilated and perforated discs, Direct Steer and 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. The Mercedes-Benz Active Curve System with AirMATIC self-levelling air suspension is also standard, endowing the ML 63 AMG with outstanding body composure and handling when cornering, with no dilution of ride comfort.

The exterior and interior styling have also come in for attention so that the ML 63 AMG has its own discreetly sporty identification. AMG bodywork includes exclusive front and rear aprons and side skirts, AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps as part of the standard Intelligent Light System, an AMG sports exhaust system with two twin tailpipes to give the ML 63 AMG its charismatic exhaust note and ‘V8 BITURBO’ lettering on the front wings. Inside, there are leather-upholstered AMG Sports seats (heated at the front), an AMG four-spoke steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather and with a flat lower section, AMG instruments and floor mats and sports pedals and footrest in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. Specific standard equipment for the ML 63 AMG in addition to that available on other versions of the new ML includes the Mercedes-Benz COMAND Online system with Media Interface, a DAB digital radio, a dashboard trimmed in Artico artificial leather and an electric glass sunroof. The optional AMG Performance Package is being offered on the ML for the first time and, in addition to the power and torque upgrade, includes the AMG Performance steering wheel with Dinamica inserts in the grip areas (available independently for £420), an AMG carbon fibre engine cover and red-painted brake calipers. The ML 63 AMG is also offered with a Driver’s Package (£2,820), which raises the limited top speed from 155 mph to 174 mph and includes attendance at a ‘Power and Passion’ driver event. RM Magazine predict it won’t be long until we see these cruising round the streets of Essex …

Sue Bell founded Essex children’s charity ‘Kids Inspire’ in 2007. It is a community based organisation that aims to support vulnerable and disadvantaged young people and their families. Currently, Kids Inspire is based in Chelmsford and Southend, and provides a bespoke package of intervention individually tailored to each child’s needs. Kids Inspire strives to build good relationships and help young people achieve their full potential so they can become stable adults who contribute positively to society.

Building relationships through therapy, opportunity, love and care

The young people are mainly referred to us mainly by schools due to emotional issues that are impacting negatively on their engagement and attainment at school. This means that they are at risk of poor long term outcomes and life chances. The young people supported by Kids Inspire vary widely – some have suffered trauma, neglect or abuse and, as a direct result, may feel disconnected from society. Their behaviour challenges teachers and support staff and they are often labelled and at risk of exclusion. For some of the young people who use Kids Inspire, their needs are less complex but equally as important. They may be suffering as a result of family bereavement, bullying at school, or a more organic problem such as Asperger’s Syndrome. Kids Inspire takes the time to listen and work with the young person and their family, with the aim of providing the right solution.

Whatever the issue Kids Inspire steps in by offering emotional support services, counselling, individual and group therapy, music and art based projects and a mentoring scheme. This will provide skills that will enable the young people to realize their potential and to ensure they feel safe and secure where they are cared for. This process takes time, patience and commitment, but as a result they will have improved emotional and physical health, become TVYL JVUÄKLU[ OH]L H NYLH[LY MLLSPUN VM ZLSM ^VY[O ;OL` ^PSS HSZV ILULÄ[ MYVT increased attainment and attendance at school and be less likely to engage in anti-social and criminal behaviour. One of our many success stories consists of a young person who had suffered from severe trauma and abuse and after a long therapeutic relationship with Kids Inspire is now studying at University. We need people who want to be part of the story! Support us to support the young people of Essex!

Kids Inspire is part of the Gold Challenge!! Gold Challenge is partnered with Team GB and the British Olympic Association. It challenges participants to take on Olympic and Paralympic sport themed challenges to raise money for one of its 150 charity partners. PALOMA FAITH

exclusive interview

You’re releasing your single ‘Picking Up The Pieces’ this month – can you tell us a bit about what this song is about? It’s about being in a relationship with somebody who you think might be on the rebound but is going out with you but you’re not sure. They’re recovering from the past relationship and what it’s like to be in that position when you’re doubting yourself and your role in their life. For your upcoming album ‘Fall To Grace’ you’ve stated that you’ve taken a more cinematic approach with the album, with it being the ‘soundtrack to your life’, was this a conscious decision on your part, to combine your music with your love of acting to make the album more personal? It was a conscious decision but it wasn’t really that I wanted to combine it with my love of acting; it was more that I wanted to combine it with my love of film as a viewer. I watch a lot of films all the time so I wanted to somehow cultivate the atmosphere of films into this whole album and everything we put out.

54 www.rmmagazine.co.uk

exclusive interview

Do you have any favourite tracks? What track are you most looking forward to fans hearing? I love all of them, but I think some stand out ones are probably ‘The Next Thing’, ’30 Minute Love Affair’ and ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’ they’re kind of… more dancey ones, which make me excited to have a dance! I’m really looking forward to the emotional side of things ‘Just Be’ and ‘Streets Of Glory’ I’m really excited about, ‘Just Be’ is a very stripped back ballad with piano and then ‘Streets of Glory’ is the opposite, it’s got bells and whistles and everything all in one. They have string arrangements from David Arnold who I think is incredible. You’ve previously said that “A lot of people write songs because they want to record them in a studio” whereas you write songs so that you can perform them live, do you prefer performing the chilled out songs better, or the more upbeat numbers? I think both, a mix of both. Like light, you need light and shade; gigs are full of light and shade as well. You collaborated with lots of artists, from rapper Ghost Face Killah for a remixed version of ‘New York’ to Cee Loo Green at the Brit awards. Who would be your dream collaboration? Andre 3000 Going back to your acting career, you’ve appeared in several films and television dramas. You’ve recently been announced to appear in the BBC adaptation of Blandings – can you tell us a little more about your character and how this came about? I’m just appearing as a character called Jordan who’s in one episode, episode 5 of the series; she’s basically a 1920s version of me! She’s a London cabaret performer and is a bit playful, and quite cheeky. I had an audition – I don’t think they even knew I was an actress! I went to an audition and they said that they liked my interpretation of the character and I said ‘I’m just being myself !’

You’ve been hailed in the press as somewhat of a fashion icon - who would you say were your biggest influences or inspirations, and are there any new designers we should look out for? Biggest inspiration is probably Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich… Coco Chanel – I love the way she dressed – Bjork and Grace Jones. Designers I love Dolce and Gabbana, I keep wearing them, Alexander McQueen I think is incredible, I love all the high-end stuff like Jean Paul Gautier. New designers I think Piers Atkinson and Victoria Grant are amazing. You mentioned that Bjork is one of your fashion inspirations – you recently worked with Nellee Hooper (Bjork, No Doubt, Madonna) who produced your album; what was it like working with him? Did you learn anything from him? I learn new things everyday! I learn new things all the time. If you go through life not learning it’s a bit weird. I learnt loads; it was amazing working with him. We were a match made in heaven, as he’s really into visual things and so am I so I suppose he’s the first producer I worked with who understood my language as I sort of, speak in pictures! My old A&R from my record company left and this guy called Colin Barlow took over the record label and I told him what I was after and how I didn’t really know who to approach and he suggested Nellee. He said ‘I’ve got a really strong feeling about this, and you’ve got to trust me’ and I did, and I met him, and I thought he was brilliant!

giving a more physically emotional performance. I just feel like to me it’s important that we have something to look at, so I focused on that. I learnt how much talent there is out there, and how it’s a really strange industry as at the end of the day, not that much talent breaks through. It’s unbelievable sometimes when you just take a minute to think ‘actually, there’s loads of people who could be wearing the exact same shoes that I’m wearing’. It makes me feel grateful for what I’ve got and what I’ve achieved – obviously I’ve worked bloody hard for it but I think there’s a certain combination of hard work, perseverance… and a little sprinkling of luck. What are you plans for the rest of the year; do you have any live plans or plans to tour? I’m doing some warm up shows this summer, I’m yet to find out dates – I’ll be promoting this record then I’m hoping I’ll tour towards the end of the year but I won’t if people don’t buy the album! So I’m waiting to find out if people will buy it so I can go out on tour and show off !! I’m very nervous about the release, I keep ringing my manager up, as I’m a bag of nerves!

‘Picking Up The Pieces’, the first single from Paloma Faith’s second album is released on 20th May. The album ‘Fall To Grace’ will follow on 28th May via Sony/RCA.

You’ve been revealed as a mentor for Danny’s team on BBC’s ‘The Voice’ to help prep the vocalists for the ‘Battle’ round of the competition. What was the main piece of advice you gave to them, and how was the experience for you? Did you learn anything by going through the process with them? I think the main piece of advice I was giving them was about performance and how I think it’s not enough to just stand on stage and sing the song, you have to do extra, whether it be physically moving around and giving depth to the song physically or

will be connected. From July 2012, all Tube passengers will be able to connect to the internet at stations for free, enabling millions of commuters and visitors to access websites and online destinations and stay up-to-date with news and events listings, review the best spots for lunch and discover great London attractions from their mobile phones, tablets, laptops and other connected devices. Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said: “It’s vital that we harness the massive opportunities stemming from the digital revolution, by creating a vibrant, world class industry to attract investment and create jobs for Londoners. Millions of passengers will now be able to connect to their work, friends or access the latest news and travel information whilst on the move. This is a fabulous new and free resource which will be in place from this summer when London is being showcased on a global stage and playing host to millions. ”

Final Thought: Free Wi-Fi on the tube is great news but how long will it free?

RUMOURS OF AN IPAD MINI The Chinese rumour mill has hit full blast claiming to have details about the imminent release of an iPad mini. Chinese net portal, NetEase, has a story on a rumoured new mini Apple tablet. NetEase claimed that the device will be released around the third quarter of this year to ‘counter attack’ the upcoming Windows tablets. The report further claims that the devices will cost anywhere from £249 to £299 and that there will be an initial six million units ready for launch. Various Apple analysts have said before that a smaller iPad could do wonders for Apple, allowing it to dominate the smaller tablet market as well.

Final Thought: At RM Magazine, all we have to say is ‘Can’t wait!’

BORIS BACKS ROMFORD Hosted in The Brickyard, Romford - London Mayor Boris Johnson attended a private networking event organised by Havering Borough Council. Ahead of the election on 3rd May, RM Magazine went along to find out what Boris Johnson will do if re-elected. What will you do for Romford if you are re-elected?

We want increased opportunities for jobs and growth here. I very much hope people are recognizing we are taking sensible steps to cut waste, get more police out on the streets, cut crime, keep putting uniformed officers on our buses, work with the private sector to get real legacy value from the Olympics and keep council tax low. Why should Londoners have to pay more for their council tax?

Do you have any plans to bring out the Boris Bikes to Greater London? Yes of course we will. We want to expand it but we need more money from Barclays to do so.

Are you feeling confident?

I’m not feeling confident, I’m feeling

Words By Haydn Squibb hits in its first week of airing, showing a strong fan base and buzz growth for The Harlots.

THE HARLOTS The Harlots are an upcoming band based in the heart of London whose members are Sherwin Claridge on vocals and guitar, Enrique Moreno on lead guitar, Florent Amador on the bass guitar and backing vocals and Adam Szabo on the drums. Their success can be attributed to the fact that, having been together for only half a year, they have already established a highly coveted and personal sound.

Their style is easily recognizable - melodic, anthemic guitar driven tunes akin to The Stone Roses, The Beatles, Oasis and The Libertines. Their set list serves as the strongest evidence of The Harlots’ creativity, song-writing capability and performance skills. After recording the promising single ‘Be Mine’ back in January this year, they are currently immersed in a never-ending tour around some of the most prestigious venues in London. If you want to check out the lads doing what they do best then head over to Mother Live in Shoreditch on 3rd May or Surya in Kings Cross on 5th July. A European Tour is also on the cards for the first two weeks of June that will be kicking off with a gig at the Buffalo Bar on 31st May in Islington, and then stopping in London, Portsmouth, Paris, Nantes, Montpellier and Madrid. Not half bad for a band that’s not been around too long! ‘Be Mine’ has been described as a tune that deserves to be on a summer playlist with its electric harmony, and the video received over one thousand

The Harlots are a band formed by ambitious young musicians who deserve the opportunity to showcase their talent to the world. Believe it or not, they actually all met online through various websites, but this shouldn’t seem so surprising in the social media based world that we live in! The lads all have a dream of being highly successful, but don’t all bands! They’ve all tried their hand in the band scene before but here they are now, with a bit more experience on their side, striving to do it properly this time around. Sherwin, the lead vocalist, when asked to described the bands favourite gig at The Good Mixer earlier on this year told us, “The scene for guitar music is just bubbling under the surface at this present time but when the band played there it seemed like the crowd was there for music. There are still people out there hungry for quality, guitar bands. The place was absolutely rammed and people were still trying to walk in off the streets just for the love of music. It will come back around – it always does!” The Harlots have many videos on their YouTube but they suggest to check out ‘A Day With The Harlots’ for a revealing insight into the band and an acoustic performance on top of Primrose Hill in London. The lads have a vast array of websites that you are able to check them out on including: www.theharlotsmusic.com www.facebook.com/theharlotsmusic www.youtube.com/theharlotsmusic @theharlotsmusic
