Sue Bell founded Essex children’s charity ‘Kids Inspire’ in 2007. It is a community based organisation that aims to support vulnerable and disadvantaged young people and their families. Kids Inspire supports young people in Essex, so that they can feel valued and achieve their potential through therapy, counselling and mentoring. Our families can explore, understand and communicate their feelings. In turn this builds self-esteem, increases attainment and attendance at school and enables young people and their families to make positive choices. This process takes time and patience, but Kids Inspire is committed to turning lives around. Kids Inspire are proud to announce that they have been selected as the winners of the Mid Essex Business Award for Excellent Customer Service in the medium–sized business category. We are supported by the patronage of Anya Hindmarch (international fashion designer). We are also the chosen charity for Rathbone Perception Media, Essex County Cricket Club, Baker labels, Subway (Chelmsford branches) and The County Hotel for 2012. We have continued to receive amazing support from local businesses, such as STV Building Services, E2V, Britvic and M&G, who have supported us through donations and amazing activities over the past year.

pril came and went, but at least it had the good nature to give us a lovely long bank holiday to enjoy. The RM team went along to The Brickyard Bar & Grill in support of Help for Hero’s, raising money with the help of The Only Way is Bikinis and other boutiques local to the area, all taking to the catwalk for an amazing cause. The whole team had a great time, with one of our writers winning four VIP tickets for Essex Fashion Week in the raffle and RM and Positive Media’s choice winning ‘most stylish’ on the night; the prise a Photoshoot worth £2500! In all, the night raised over £2000 for the cause, so a spectacularly successful evening for the charity and for all involved. In this month’s issue, we’re just one Olly short of an Oi Oi, with interviews from pop star Olly Murs and Ollie Winiberg from BBC Introducing. And our regular, Leddra, steps into the famous blue tardis. Girl band Aura, in between modelling and performing at the Help for Hero’s charity event, dishes the dirt on who’s the loudest in the band and who gets the most nervous, and make sure you read our ‘Drunken memories you’d rather forget’ feature, paying homage to the upcoming release of The Hangover 3; you won’t believe some of the stories that we gathered, and not all have ended up in print, but the ones that have, are pretty funny; see what you think. Enjoy!

We’re all going on a

holiday

When work worries and the weather get you down, plan a holiday, then feel the strain really take off Flicking through travel brochures, holiday shopping and arriving at the airport are not always pictures of paradise. A new study by KAYAK. co.uk has found over a quarter of Brits find holiday planning a headache, with younger people panicking the most. Almost half of people aged 18-25 say the whole process is worrying, compared to 27% of all Britons admitting it was a stressful time; but why? The top concern is finding a destination within a budget, followed by choosing a date to go. However, this stress doesn’t end at the checkout. Once the holiday is booked there is a period of calm, but this comes crashing down in the final run up. Making sure that all of the essentials are packed is one of the top concerns for 13% of Brits, particularly in the fashion department. Nearly half worry about taking the right sort of clothes and almost a quarter of women say packing enough pairs of shoes is a top concern. Never mind your passport; are your strappy pink sandals safely stowed? More fears await you in the airport’s arrivals lounge. Ever had a mini heart attack when you can’t find your ticket? You’re not alone. Unsurprisingly, travel documents topped the list of items we’re most concerned with leaving behind. But in the case of forgetting to pack an essential item, 19% said they would calmly purchase the item at the airport and 53% when they arrive at their destination. However, more than one in ten 18-25 year olds said they would panic. But if you definitely, definitely have everything, what else could cause turbulence? Horrific flashbacks of leaving the house unsecure or imagining the cooker and boiler creating sparks behind your back is a common concern among 18%. And even if you don’t fret about this, there is one unsolvable fear that over one in ten have: will it live up to expectations? If the holiday planning is stressing you out, it’s likely that you’ll need a seriously decent break to make it worth the hassle, which could therefore increase the dissatisfaction rate.

PUT OFF THE PANIC Plan well in advance With several months to plan you’ll have the time to check out the best destinations, research hotels, go shopping gradually, get vaccinations and buy insurance. Booking in advance can also be cheaper than last minute deals. KAYAK’s data analysis reveals that you could save around 20% when booking your flight three months before departure. Use comparison websites KAYAK, Trivago, travel supermarket and other comparison sites will seek out the best deals and help you save money on hotels, insurance, flights and more. Make tick-lists Write separate lists of items you need to pack in your suitcase, hand luggage (passport, tickets etc.), and another for belongings you won’t pack until the day you leave (toothbrush, hair brush, flannel). Tick them off as you put them in, and if you pack anything last minute, write it on the list and tick it off. Read through it before you leave. Buy insurance Lost luggage and accidents abroad are worries for any holidaymaker KAYAK reported one quarter of us worry about falling ill. Find the best insurance deal and if you don’t use it, you’ll still have purchased peace of mind. Unplug appliances Standard practice for most, but essential for all. Switch off all plugs before you go and leave a key with a nearby friend if you wish. If it really helps, take a picture of your key locking the door, to assure your beating heart that you really did lock the door! • Men aged 66+ from the East of England are the most chilled.

Yes the planning causes some of the stress but it’s also the solution. This year, as you say goodbye to Blighty, follow these tips and bid farewell to your anxieties too.

• London women aged 18-25 at most risk of suffering from the holiday stress factor.

Taurus (April 21st - May 21st)

Love

Take a gentler approach with loved ones in the opening days of May. Being too abrasive can cause a fragile alliance to fall apart at the seams.

New Talent You have a chance to travel, write, and explore new vistas. Don’t screw things up by pushing your greatest supporter past the brink of endurance. Showing off your artistic talent on or around the 8th will yield impressive results.

Money

There’s a good chance you will earn money from your creative endeavours. Repaying a debt will be difficult in the days surrounding the 25th. Take this opportunity to assess what you owe, and devise a plan for repaying your creditors. The sooner you face the truth of this situation, the easier you will sleep.

Explore As the month comes to a close, you’ll be tempted to take a short trip out of town. Do it; a nearby relative will be happy to see you and catch up on old times.

s r u M Olly

Written by Hayley Baldwin

20 | rmmagazine.co.uk

interview

h

e just finished his UK tour, he celebrates his 29th birthday, and in June he jets off to perform in Ireland before touring with Robbie Williams!

it seems there’s never a bad moment in Olly Murs’ life until you mention twitter! He’s one of Essex’s most successful singers, with two out of three albums soaring to the number one spot along with 4 number one singles. ‘Army of Two’ is his latest hit, which opens his third album ‘Right Place, Right Time’, the fastest-selling male solo album of 2012. “It was one of the easiest videos, but one of the longest, I did 148 takes of the same me,” he says describing the video that features multiple Murses singing, dancing and marching towards the camera. A different video is not the only alteration to his music. “I think the style of my music’s just changing, and that’s what’s really great about this new album,” he says. This unpredictability is something Olly likes to include in his work. “I try and do something different every time I do a song, and try and do something that my fans don’t expect.” But all the tune tweaking and surprising songs require hard work. “I think you’re only as good as the people that you work with,” he says. “We all work hard and we’ve got a very talented band that make all my records on the album sound better. I think that’s the key when you go to a tour, you want the songs to sound even bigger and better.” So how does he boost his songs and freshen up the older ones? “We try and mix it up a little bit. For example, with ‘Please Don’t Let Me Go’ we’ve got this swinging kind of vibe version of it, which is a bit jazzy, a bit cooler. It sounds amazing now.” So if you’re one of the lucky fans who got a ticket to his UK tour,

expect some pleasant surprises. One thing is for sure, his fans wouldn’t be kept waiting like the Beliebers – “Never! I think he probably should have said ‘sorry’ at least on stage that night and I think it would have all been fine,” he says. “I can understand people’s reasons for getting upset and saying that he shouldn’t have been late, there were lots of kids there, I get that.” However, looking at it from an artist’s perspective, Olly is sympathetic and believes there was more behind the late arrival. “There was obviously a reason why he never went on stage and a statement came out about the fact that it was due to management reasons. It’s not like he does it on a regular basis.” His own tour isn’t the only one he’s doing this year. “I’m going to be supporting Robbie [Williams] on his amazing stadium tour,” he says. “It’s a great position for me to be in, you know, such a huge tour, 80 odd thousand people per night in different stadiums. That for me is incredible.” Although Robbie may have toured more times than Olly has flipped a trilby, he lacks the confidence of the Essex lad and confided in him at the X Factor. “He was just like ‘You not nervous about going on?’ I was like ‘No, no I’m buzzing’, he was like ‘Wow, where do you get that confidence from? I get so nervous and I freak out on stage. It’s surprising to hear someone like Robbie say that because he comes across so confident, almost a bit arrogant, and he’s just got such a big front on him.” However, it’s not just nerves that make artists wary of performing. Olly admits the Brits are not what they used to be, the hungry media are waiting to snap up every failing opportunity, which unnerves new acts. “The Brits are a bit boring now compared to what it was and I think that’s probably our own fault now as new artists coming through,” he says. The darker side of social media is something Olly feels strongly about, especially Twitter trolls. “It just annoys me, I hate Twitter sometimes. I genuinely hate it. I love it because I speak to my fans and I can have a bit of banter on there, but you just get idiots, absolute idiots”, he says.

“There was some geezer today having a go at one of my fans for no reason. She just said ‘I really like this song you did blah blah blah...’ and he started going ‘It’s rubbish’ and swearing and having a go at her! I was like, hang on a minute mate, just chill out for God’s sake!” Celebrities are always under fire by social media haters. Fellow Essex singer Jessie J has received death threats via Twitter, while Kylie Minogue alerted police after having her life threatened. However others hit back as Pink did in August last year. “Sometimes you think, ‘Do I message them?’ Because that’s what they want, they just want a raise and they just want to be noticed on Twitter,” he says. “Or it’s like, ‘Do you know what? ‘Shall I retweet it so that all my fans can just abuse them?’ Nine times out of ten Olly says he refuses to feed the trolls. “I just ignore it. I don’t need someone like you in my life.” Clearly more of a lover than fighter, he leaves the negative tweeting to the rest, and stays the jolly Olly we all know. “If I was on Twitter everyday tweeting like some people do, people would be thinking I was an absolute miserable person,” he says. “If you don’t like your life, make it better. Stop tweeting about it! I’ve got to where I am now because I work hard and I want to be successful and I want to keep trying. Stop being so negative!” So what’s his theory for antisocial networking? “They either don’t get cuddled enough as children or they generally don’t like life at all.” Sounds plausible! “I’m sure in 10 years time we won’t be using Twitter and there’ll be something else coming out. Sorry, that was a bit of a rant there!” We’re not sure if Twitter will last 10 years, but as there really never is a dull moment, we can bet Olly will still be in the spotlight in a decade.

21

OLLY ON... RYLAN CLARK TV personality and Olly’s possible replacement on The Xtra Factor while he focuses on his music “He’s a top guy and I’d be delighted if he got the job. But if I was managing Rylan, I would probably say, ‘Do you know what? I think you’d be great on ‘The Xtra Factor’ as something on the show, rather than being the presenter now.’ I think he just needs to establish himself now as something and I think maybe going back to The Xtra Factor this year will be too soon for him. But I mean, what do I know? Like I say, I took the job.” BEN HOWARD The singer who beat Olly to the British male solo artist award at the BRITs this year. “I’m chuffed that Ben did win. He’s an amazing singer, an amazing songwriter, and he’s got a great album. He’s a top guy, but you know, at the time I was gutted and I’m still gutted! Winning a Brit award was a big thing for me and this year was probably the first year that I really genuinely thought I could win one out of all the other nominations. I get sort of annoyed when people tweet me and say, ‘Oh be a bit gracious’ and I was like, ‘Of course I am, of course I’m happy for Ben Howard to win but I can turn around and say I’m gutted’.” LOVEABLE ROGUES Last year’s Britain’s Got Talent finalists have just finished touring with Olly. “I’ve been following them since the show [Britain’s Got Talent]. I met Eddie [Brett] in a bar in Loughton and I said ‘what are you doing next year?’ He said ‘Well, dunno, obviously be figuring out a plan to release music’. So I said ‘Do you want to come on my tour? They’re very talented, great lads but they’re really down to earth, cool guys. So that was the reason behind me asking them.”

Etel Harris, Personal Stylist Founder of STYLE IN THE CITY

Ackeno Forbes Romford age 18

When it comes to fashion and style you should always have one good item for each category, a great suit, dress, fantastic pair of shoes, bag etc so that you always feel great for every occasion. Favourite style quote: “Personal Style comes from within. It is when the woman, her individuality and spirit come through. She uses clothes to express who she is and how she feels.” Donna Karan.

Ackeno wears a purple bold print sweatshirt, teamed with matching bandana styled as a head band, with jeans, trainers and bag.

Christabel Roberts Fashion Blogger “ Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” - As a renowned stylist, Rachel Zoe certainly has style authority and her fashion visions imprinted on Hollywood A-listers always provide me with inspiration. She advises treading lightly on trends, so I usually stick to ‘classic’ when hitting the high-street.

My style icon is Joey Essex from TOWIE ‘The only Way is Essex’. My style is generally out there, I am definitely a trend setter, I am in to fashion but put my own spin on style. My must have item is trainers, my fashion tip would be ‘Don’t be afraid to wear anything, as long as it works!’.

Antonio Valentino, Brentwood, age 21 Antonio wears Adidas tracksuit, with trainers and bold print baseball cap. He has his own style. Fashion tip: Don’t look at someone and try to get their look, my style is one of a kind eclectic, calm, which varies when dressing up ‘if you saw me on a night out, you would think that I’d come from space’. Be yourself, stand out and think out of the box’.

Layla Fowler Dagenham age 23

Sherry Winnett Romford

Layla wears printed T-Shirt with denim jacket layered with military silver studded shirt, teamed with red tartan trousers and purple Dr. Martens boots.

Sherry wears black vest with printed shorts over coloured tights, teamed with an oversized shaggy cardigan, ankle boots and oversized studded bag.

She sets her own trends, her style is different, she describes it as rock n roll, alternative and ‘just me’. Layla’s must have fashion item is eye liner. Her fashion tip is ‘Don’t be afraid to try something different.

Sherry’s must have beauty item is blusher. Her fashion icon is Alexa Chung, she describes her style as unique, picking up fashion tips from life and turns it in to her own style, Sherry’s fashion tip: ‘if you don’t have time to apply make up, just wear a pair of sunglasses to complete any look and be on trend.

Charity Turner Upminster, age 18 Charity wears black leggings with grey cat print T-shirt, layered with black hooded zip up top and military inspired jacket, accessorised with tartan headband and dyed neon pink fringe.

e t a r libe

Charity’s style is inspired by Japanese Harajuku fashion. Her must have item is leggings as they are versatile and go with everything.. fashion tip: Don’t be afraid to go with colourful garments, mix colours, it can make a look by creating a fun and cute style.

Alfia Ahmed Chadwell Heath age 16 Alfia wears bright and bold print T-shirt with black full length skirt beige studded leather jacket accessorised with large bag. Her fashion icon is Rihanna as she is always on trend. Alfia describes her style as casual when at college, but also mature and loves dark colours. As a photographer, she is used to being on the other side of the camera, but it inspires her own fashion style as she regularly sees different looks through the camera lens. Her must have is eyeliner.

HAIR & MAKE UP Going out with the girls is fun, the weekend is here and it’s time to let our hair down. Well, not in this case! Finding the perfect style so that you can stand out from the crowd is hard. So this month we focused on a style that combines the classic hair-up do, with a slight modern twist; it’s just enough to make you go ‘oooo’, and easy enough for you to do at home. Hair and make-up styled by Cheryl Taylor of Taylor’s Hair Studio. www.taylorshairstudio.co.uk

Products used – Le Biosthetique ‘beam me up curly’ ‘Attitude Spray’ Belevenace Make- Up Range

HAIR It is important when doing hair-up that you wash your hair the day before. To start, spray dry hair very lightly with a styling spray that encourages curl. (beam me up curly) Tong the hair all over and section it so that you can put into heated rollers. Once the whole head is in rollers, leave for 10 minutes to cool down. This helps the curl hold in place for longer. Use a holding spray (Attitude Spray) all over and a volume powder to the roots whilst the hair is cooling. Once cool, remove rollers and put the top section to one side. Create a loose French plait high into the middle of the head on each side and tie off with hair elastics. Backcomb the top section then style into a quiff and secure onto the crown using hair grips and pins. Curl the ends into flat curls. With the remaining pony tail, loosely barrel curl down the back of the head and secure using both hair clips and pins. To make the pins more secure, turn them back on themselves. Leave a few strands loose at the nape of the neck to soften the style. Finally, spray the hair with ‘Attitude Spray’ to hold. MAKE-UP Cleanse, tone and moisturise face. Foundation was mixed with glow base and applied with a foundation brush then concealer in ‘cover + light’ in light beige under the eyes. Mineral powder was applied over the top. ‘Silky Eyes’ in Sheer Beige was put on the eyelids along with turquoise eyeliner and both were blended with a soft eye-shadow brush. Mascara was applied. Soft rose blusher was put on the apple of the cheeks and bronzer was applied under the cheek bone. Lip liner gave shape to the lips and a coral lipstick, lip-gloss were applied over the top. The Belevenace make-up range and brushes were used throughout.

THE

Havering Fashion Heroes at BRICKYARD Easter Monday was no ordinary night at Brickyard bar and grill. Food service was replaced with a fashion show, tables were laden with garments, and the cash in the tills went straight to charity On the evening April 1, Lords, models and fashion fanatics gathered at Romford’s Brickyard for the Havering Fashion Heroes event. The fashion packed, music filled event was organised to launch local businesses and raise money for the charity, Help for Heroes. The night managed to raise £2,600, thanks to The Only Way is Bikinis designer Karen Wilton. She organised the night, initially wanting to boost her business, so Havering Council stepped in. “I said what I could really do with is a launch, so they said ‘we can do that, we could get Brickyard involved,’” she explains. Shortly after, they decided to include Help for Heroes involved. Karen was touched at how eager everyone was to help. “As soon as I mentioned Help for Heroes everyone jumped on board and did everything for nothing,” she says. Terry Phillips, the owner of Brickyard, immediately donated his modern venue and the catwalk. Every penny raised, including drink sales, went to the Rehabilitation Centre in Colchester. However, Karen didn’t stop helping there and saw the opportunity to help others in her situation. “I wanted to raise the profile of all the start-up businesses that never get to show their products off face-to-face,” she says. This generous act did not go unnoticed by Councillor Robert Benham. “Karen could have easily monopolised this for herself but she said no and got all of her competitors included as well,” he says. By gathering various businesses under one roof, guests were shown a variety of collections. Kandi Clothing kicked off the show with dancers showcasing “blinged up” tracksuits and loungewear. Sexy Penguin wiggled on afterwards in Ibiza-style hot pants. Gorgeous Boutique displayed their range of women’s day and eveningwear. Boutique Boo flaunted their unique dresses, designed for only the boldest girls in Essex. Statement shoe boutique HRHighness teamed up with hair salon HairHutEssex to promote big heels and even bigger hair. Elegant eveningwear from Ellie Boutique graced the catwalk, with flowing floor length styles. Karen from The Only Way is Bikinis closed the show with her eye-catching designs, including oversized flowers and dramatic fringing. 34 | rmmagazine.co.uk

The show impressed many, including Adam Ryan. “It’s unbelievable. Normally you go to a charity event and they’re quite low key, but this is fantastic!” he says. “We’ve got professional models on the catwalk, different sized models, and everyone’s enjoying themselves thoroughly because it’s a bank holiday and it’s for a good cause.” This organisation is largely down to Gina Negus, who scouted the models, choreographed the catwalk shows and modelled herself. “It went really well, it was smooth running backstage and it was a massive achievement that none of the girls in the Ellie Boutique show fell over!” Help For Heroes is close to her heart, as her fiancé has just returned from a seven-month stint in Afghanistan. The show didn’t end when the last bikini-clad body left the catwalk. Throughout the night, several judges including RM’s own Rob Wittridge, scouted out the best dressed girl for the Fashion Hero Competition. The prize went to Louise from Romford, who wore a long sleeved lemon yellow bodycon dress, teamed with nude peep-toe shoes. RM teamed up with Paul Falltrics Hair Salon, Perfect Smile Spa and Nikki Driscoll MUA, to give Louise Lawrence a professional photoshoot for RM Magazine! Fashion finished, the night moved onto music. DJ Colin Francis, girl band AURA and Tony Roberts from Britain’s Got Talent kept everyone entertained, before Philip Cotter wowed the crowd with his incredible beatboxing. Other performances came from Will Childs and Bianca Cooke, who belted out modern and classic hits in aid of the night. The evening showed just how important Help for Heroes is to the people of Havering. “We ought to celebrate what our service men and women do. They do a fantastic job and this charity is one way we can show their support,” says Councillor Michael White, leader of Havering Council. The night certainly made helping heroes a lot more fashionable.

Aura A new

Fresh girl band AURA are giving songs a whole new vibe. They tell us more about twisting tunes and adding ‘soul’ It’s the evening of Bank Holiday Monday and we’re sitting in the VIP section at Brickyard. The Havering Fashion Heroes event is in full swing and I am joined by the new girl band AURA, who will later make their debut to the crowd. Ashley Runeckles, 17, Becca Saunders, 16 and Lola Adaja, 17 totter over and perch themselves on the sofa. Becca Lammin, 17 the fourth member is modelling in the fashion show and it was this opportunity that scored them the chance to sing this evening. “She spoke to the lady in charge of performing and helped us get a cheeky spot!” says Lola. With a smile as bright as her fuchsia pink suit. The girls met in September at Havering College where they’re currently studying Performing Arts. It was here they decided to become a band just three months ago while messing around in show rehearsals. “It was just a joke but then we sang a couple of songs and thought it sounded good, so we thought shall we give it a crack?” says Ashley, whose confidence radiates from her tiny frame. Since then, the girls have started carving out their identity. “We try different things because as a new band you want to be different to everyone else,”

says Ashley. “We bring back the urban-soul music but make it modern, or make the modern music more urban.” Changing a song’s genre is something they fell in love with during college; however, learning to sing for the stage can harm a pop group’s voices. Their tones can become too ‘musical’ but this isn’t the case with AURA. “Our ranges are hitting the roof; we can all hit F sharp!” adds the seemingly docile Becca, a passive image soon dashed when then they all suddenly squeal “F SHARP!” Ashley believes that the curtain is easily drawn on their stage voices. “When we do shows we have to be in character but when we perform we sing how we want to sing.” This is something they are about to prove. The girls head down to kick start the musical performances with a slower version of Little Mix’s Change Your Life – “to make it more like us,” Lola explains beforehand. Their voices vary in tone and pitch but blend together harmoniously. If this is what they are like three months in, we can expect a great AURA to sweep onto the music scene.

Radio Tours, Kitchen Mayhem & Claudia Winkleman! Last month my latest single, ‘All About You’ came out, and oh yes... we have another celeb for Leddy to add to the list! The ledge that is Claudia Winkleman played my single whilst filling in for Ken Bruce on Radio 2, now along with the likes of Chris Evans, Graham Norton and Terry Wogan! :-) In aid of the single release, I embarked on an adventure with my best friend and musician, Lee Broderick and my beautiful radio pluggeur, Clare. We booked in so many interviews and live performances across the country to promote my latest single it was so much fun, if a little manic! We had to cover over twenty stations in TWO DAYS!

Leddra Loves COOKING! OK so those of you who know me well and are reading this will find this surprising...mainly because up until last month the only thing I had cooked was pasta bake. Badly. And after my lovely mother reminded me that I am actually IN a published cookbook with “my” favourite recipe (Okay I may have googled it when they asked me to be part of it) I decided it was time to dust off the apron and get stuck in, I am doing a #helpleddracook on twitter every Sunday now, so join us! twitter.com/leddra

Here are some snapshots that capture the fun (and madness) Lincs FM This was our first interview and performance of the promo tour, which began in Lincoln and it covered over ten different regional stations, so it was a biggie!

BBC DERBY Here’s me having a cheeky pout during an interview in Derbyshire.

Real Radio Real Radio have now added me onto their B-List! Which is great news as it pulls in over 1.5 million listeners a week! Here’s me and Lee after our interview with them... doesn’t he look happy to be back on the road again?!

IN DEMAND Here’s us performing for IN DEMAND, based in Manchester.

The Beeb! After all the support BBC have given me with the new single, they went and topped it with tickets to the Broadcasting Theatre to watch Caro Emerald perform - and look what I found in there... hehe!

Armed with passion for music and a personal mission to prove there’s more to Essex than meets the eye, Ollie Winiberg is the voice of Essex music on the BBC. Words by Rae Delanie Passfield BBC Introducing in Essex is the home of new and unsigned talent all produced right here in Essex. Ollie Winiberg hosts the show each Saturday night, handselecting the very best to broadcast to the nation. ‘Introducing...’ is one of the biggest initiatives in the BBC at the moment, with local shows in over 47 counties, all celebrating a revolutionary idea of supporting homegrown talent. “It’s never been easier for an unsigned band to be heard on the radio, ” Ollie states. “Twenty years ago you needed a record deal, loads of money and a PR campaign, but now you could make a world wide selling album from your bedroom.” So how does it work? “All you have to do is upload your MP3 onto the BBC Introducing website - it’s as straight-forward as putting a photo onto Facebook!” he explains. “You just tap in your postcode and your track gets sent to whichever show is nearest to you. So, if it’s an Essex postcode then it gets sent to me and I personally listen to every song that comes through. “What’s really exciting though,” he continues, “is that once a band or artist have been played on a local Introducing show, they then have the possibility of being played on the national shows like Radio 1 or 1Xtra, or even playing at the Introducing stage at festivals like Glastonbury and T in the Park. All they have to do is that first bit themselves.” Originally from Leigh-on-Sea, Ollie is born and bred in Essex. Drumming in bands and immersing himself in Essex’s music scene from a very young age, music has “become his life”, A life which he now dedicates to digging out the best talent of his home county and giving them the recognition that they so eagerly desire and deserve.

My job is to listen to great music and it doesn’t get much better than that! Ollie landed his job with the BBC under very unexpected circumstances: “I was 16 when I set up a record label called Hi-Fly Music that supported unsigned artists from Southend”, he recalls. “We released a compilation album of 17 unsigned bands from Essex and BBC Essex asked if I would do an interview about it. So there I was, this 16 year old kid that had just scraped himself out of bed, doing this breakfast interview on the radio, when the boss of the station called in from

exclusive interview

a layby on the A127 said I sounded confident and asked me if I wanted a job! I couldn’t believe it!” Ollie’s spontaneous job offer has transpired into five and a half years of forefronting our music scene. But his hope for the show isn’t just to provide a platform for unsigned artists - he also wants to stamp out the Essex stereotype. “First and foremost I’d like ours to be the best, loudest and most heard local BBC Introducing show in the UK” , he says. “But each week I’d also like to prove to the people listening that Essex is full of talented musicians, who are putting everything they have into assembling a career in the music industry. Sure, TOWIE has done great things for our tourism, but it’s also given us this stigma that just isn’t true. Not everyone here has a vajazzle, and I just want to clear that up!” he laughs.

I think that Essex has one of the most exciting music scenes in the world The show has gone from strength to strength since its inception, each week giving us the very best of what Essex has to offer. “I think that Essex has got one of the most exciting music scenes in the world”, says Ollie. “And the great thing about our show is that each week you’re getting world exclusives. You’re hearing bands that have never been heard before, songs that have only passed a few friends and family before people all over the county, and all over the world through the iPlayer, hear it. It’s a great thing to be part of. “Any unsigned act, whether you’re a solo artist or a rapper, a producer or a metal band, should upload their music to the Introducing website”, says Ollie. “You never know where you’ll end up. You could get playlisted on Radio 1 for a week or you could play a major UK festival. I can’t think of better reasons to spend just five minutes uploading your song.”

Catch Ollie’s show every Saturday from 8pm on BBC Essex 103.5 Find out how to upload your track to BBC Introducing visit www.RMmagazine.co.uk

The BBC Introducing in Essex show proves how being unsigned doesn’t mean being left out in the cold anymore. Now more than ever, people are inclined to support their friend’s band rather than one shipped in from the States. Ollie’s career is based around the celebration of our county’s musicians, who dream of it, and are doing something about it. 39

Essex Fashion Week The most fashionable event in Essex has returned, and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Adam Ryan reveals what this year holds...

Last September, the CEME Centre was packed with press, celebrity guests and fashion fanatics. The Romford venue played host to Essex Fashion Week, an event that gets better every season. The AW12 show included collections from Hybrid, Tresor Paris, Strip Wax Bar, Dolly Rocker Kids and many more. And who could forget the moment the models whipped out their hair extensions and twirled them above their heads in the Totally Essex Hair Extensions show? TOWIE stars sat on the front row, including Chloe Sims and Frankie Essex, whose own lines graced the catwalk. Once the show was over, guests were then treated to vocal performances from X Factor’s Two Shoes and Tony Roberts from Britain’s Got Talent. The team at Essex Fashion Week were thrilled with the turnout. “Overall it was a highly successful event and anything we will decide to do differently will be a surprise for Essex Fashion Week spring/summer 2013,” says one member. So what can we expect from this season?

The event is now in its fourth year and promises to be even bigger and better, but it will have large stilettos to fill. “This will be the best show that we have ever produced,” said show compere Adam Ryan back in September. We caught up with Adam and asked him how this season will top the last. 42 | rmmagazine.co.uk

“It’s always great to see fashion as an industry, passion and lifestyle, bringing amazing people together! “ What can we expect from this year’s EFW? We have a brand new line up of creative and inspirational designers except for one who is returning from our AW12 show. It’s a fantastic eclectic mix of fashion including TOWIE’s Tom Pearce who is launching his own online boutique on our runway. We have a bigger venue this year catering for even more celebrities, press and guests and our afterparty is being hosted by LoveJuice. There is only one show this year so its going to be more exclusive and have an even bigger impact than usual! Why have you changed the venue? The venue this year is phenomenal and ultra glamorous. It holds double the amount of people compared to previous venues and is normally used for big weddings. Changing the venue is a very positive thing we love to do as it keeps it fresh and exciting for our regular guests. It also becomes a blank canvas for our team to be really creative and different with the production and overall image. What will make this year better than last year? Like we have said its the one and only show this year so its completely jam packed! We also have some fresh new headline sponsors including The City Pavilion, Dingwuddles, Bondara, Loco Lounge, LoveJuice, Holler, The Ilford Exchange, Nikki Lissoni and Lipstick Boutique. The event is becoming even more popular every time that it takes place so since the last one it has had lots more exposure and an

even bigger demand of brands and business that want to be involved. All of our ultra VIP tickets have been completely sold out for a while now so it is definitely set to be ultra busy!

What are you most looking forward to? The show? Celebrity guests? Seeing a specific designer? The whole team is looking forward to the whole day from rehearsals in the morning through to the afterparty at night. We all love getting dressed up for the occasion and admiring others that have also made a huge effort! There is such a buzzing atmosphere backstage, on stage and in the audience that wherever you are and whatever you are doing, everyone is having a great time. It’s always great to see fashion as an industry, passion and lifestyle, bringing amazing people together! Are we in for any surprises? Well that would be telling but I can say that the opening to the show will definitely be very memorable! We have completely mixed up the production and choreography of the catwalk too and as always we also have our usual surprise entertainment and celebrity guests! So we will leave it there and let you find out for yourselves on the day, we wouldn’t want to spoil the surprises for all of you now would we? Essex Fashion Week, 5th May 2013 at The City Pavilion. 43

Sticky duck-dogs with chopped mango slaw & Chinese crisps

Serve shredded hoisin duck in hot dog rolls with crunchy Asian slaw and pancakes baked into tortilla-style homemade chips 1. Cook the duck following pack instructions. Sandwich pairs of the pancakes together by brushing with a little of the oil. Brush both sides of the rounds with a touch more oil, sprinkle with a little five-spice powder and some salt, then slice into triangle ‘crisps’ like pizza wedges. Space over baking sheets and add to the oven with the duck. Check after 5 mins, then every 2 mins; when golden and crisp, remove from the oven and cool while the duck continues cooking. 2. Meanwhile, make the slaw. Whisk together the rice vinegar, oil, lime juice and sugar with some seasoning. Put the mango, cabbage, chilli, spring onions and coriander in a bowl. Add the dressing, toss together and chill until ready to eat. 3. In a small saucepan, mix the tomato ketchup, 4 tbsp of the honey, the soy sauce, ginger and the hoisin sauce from the duck. Bubble for 2-3 mins until slightly thickened and well combined, then set aside. 4. When the duck is nearly done, mix the egg yolk and remaining 1 tbsp honey with a pinch of salt. Brush all over the hot dog rolls, scatter with sesame seeds, then slice partly down the middle, ready to fill, and sit on another baking sheet. 5. When the duck comes out of the oven, put the rolls in and bake at 200C/180C fan/gas 6 for 5-8 mins until golden brown. Use 2 forks to shred the meat and crispy skin from the duck (discarding bones and fat), then mix with onethird to one-half of the hoisin sauce. Divide the hot duck filling between the rolls and pipe or squiggle over the remaining sauce, like mustard over a hot dog. 6. Gently put the crisps in a serving bowl (they’ll be delicate), then serve with the hot duck-dogs and cool mango slaw. 44 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Ingredients 2 x packs half crispy duck with pancakes and hoisin sauce (available from all major supermarkets) 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder 6 tbsp tomato ketchup 5 tbsp clear honey 4 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp grated ginger or purée 1 egg yolk 6 hot dog rolls 2 tbsp sesame seeds

For the slaw • 3 tbsp rice wine vinegar • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • juice 2 limes • 1 tsp caster sugar or granulated sugar • 1 large mango (not too ripe), peeled and cut into matchsticks • 400g/14oz chunk white cabbage, finely shredded then roughly chopped a couple of times • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely sliced • 6 spring onions, cut into matchsticks • handful coriander leaves, roughly chopped

The dawn of a new business era in Havering – are you ahead of your time? The Havering Business Awards now in their ninth year, is your chance to put yourself, team member or your company in the spotlight. 2013 inspired by the Art Deco times of the 20th century, we feel we relived the 'depression' of the 1930s and are ready to start the 'roaring' twenties all over again. Councillor Robert Benham, cabinet member for community empowerment says, “I am very proud to say that Havering has a wonderful mix of business types, from manufacturing to marketing many of which are amongst the best in the world”. Last year's Havering Business Person of the Year, Warren Davis from Ignite said, "I'm overwhelmed, and that's the best way to put it. It's quite emotional as I really didn't think I would win”. Acumen Design won Best Business in the Community, Director Ray Calder said, “It means a lot to everyone, especially during these struggling times, it makes us extremely proud to take this award tonight”.

What’s On at the Queens Theatre? London cabby John Smith has two homes, two lives and two wives! He’s been juggling Mary and Barbara for years, arousing EVERYTHING but suspicion. But how long can he keep it up? When a bump on the head lands John in casualty, his two addresses get mixed up and he has lots of explaining to do. Crazy concoctions spiral out of control as John dodges prying police officers and the press, whilst avoiding a head-on collision between two increasingly frustrated women. A joyride of double lives and double entendres, belly laughs and bigamy!

Women in Business Despite the miserable weather and all the doom and gloom recently around business and unemployment there has been a ray of sunshine from the growth in ‘start up’ businesses, including many working from home. Is it something you have ever considered? Well maybe this is your moment, a great time to follow your dream. Either way, starting up yourself has lots of appeal, with low ‘start up’ costs, the opportunity for working around school times and an opportunity to be your own Boss. There’s lots of information available but I thought that for all you budding entrepreneurs considering this way forward, I could give you a few nuggets of advice. Firstly, think it through properly and don’t confuse your project with your dream. Your dream is your ultimate destination; a project is just a step along the way. Talk to people who are already walking the path you are about to take and learn from their experience. What you don’t know can be learned. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Develop yourself. Make personal growth part of your daily routine. There is a difference between an expense and an investment. Make sure you know the real difference. While you will have costs associated with your business, spending money now to produce a greater good in the future is an investment. Become knowledgeable about your subject and network, network, network. And finally…be patient. Many people think their idea has failed when in reality, they themselves, have just run out of patience. They give up before their idea has a chance to blossom. Don’t forget to check out the LBH Business Events page at www.havering.gov.uk for all our free business events including the Nat West Mobile Business School. This FREE mobile business school, with information for potential ‘start ups’ will be in Romford Market Place – 9th May 2013 10am to 3.00pm and always remember, I am at the end of the telephone if you would like some advice. BBQ Gadgetry - Written by Charlotte Long -

What? It’s May already!? It’s almost half way through the year, where has it all gone? It feels like April was only yesterday…oh wait (this joke only works if you’re reading this on May 1st, if not, well you missed out. Anyways, yes gadgets! This month I talk about summery gadgets that will assist you into making tasty BBQ food for this (hopefully) hot weather! So get your apron, get your chef’s hat and get your fire extinguisher (just to be on the safe side).

MP3 Amp Speakers

Red5, £14.95

This super cool miniature guitar amp speaker will fit with any British BBQ, with it’s quality 5w speaker you’ll be dancing in the moonlight (when it gets dark, clearly, otherwise you’d be dancing in the sunlight!). It even has working treble and bass dials and plugs straight into your phones/MP3’s AUX. So rock and roll…

This retro 1950’s style slushie maker will really send a chill down your spine! If you loved slushies as a kid or in fact still are a kid then this will be right up your street! Just add ice cubes, a little water then all your favourite ingredients and watch before your eyes as it transforms into a mouth-watering slush. Warning: Enjoying the slushie machine too much could result in permanent brain freeze.
