oe McElderry is best known for winning the sixth series of the ITV show The X Factor back in 2009, and having also won the second series of Popstar To Opera Star earlier this year. Joe’s achieved an awful lot for a twenty year old including having the best selling single from a British Male Artist in 2009, the biggest selling CD of 2009, and selling over one million records. RM Magazine caught up with Joe to have a chat about his up and coming tour and album release.
So you’re about to start your new tour, Classics, tell us a little bit about what we should expect from it? Well basically we’re trying to give you a snapshot of where I am now in my career since the X Factor. You’ll obviously get all the classics from the new album, some of the songs from my first album ‘Wide Awake’ and a few covers thrown in there that people will know, which were voted for by the fans so that’s nice. It’s just going to be a fun packed show of songs people know me well for. How does this tour differ from your previous ones? It’s my first solo tour, so with the X Factor ones I
sung all the songs I performed on the show. This one will include a lot of songs people haven’t heard live yet. So there’s going to be quite a lot of new stuff that people won’t have seen live. This tour is with your new album, how has your musical style developed since releasing ‘The Climb’ after the X Factor? As you know I’ve taken part in Popstar to Opera Star earlier in the year, and I think my album was a lot different to what people expected, so it’s changed a lot. I’ve always wanted to do that as an artist, give my fans things they wouldn’t expect. It
keeps them guessing and it challenges myself. It’s so easy to go into the studio and just record something that everyone expects. If you throw something out there that shocks and suprises then it can sometimes work out a bit better. You mentioned Popstar to Opera Star, which you went on to win, what made you decide to go on the show? I got approached by ITV in January this year, and I’d just came back from holiday, so I was all relaxed and thought it would be something fun to work on during summer, but then it all became a lot more

serious! I really started to enjoy it, and it’s why we starting writing some of the classic music. The audience really love it so we thought why not give them what they want! Have you always had an interest in Operatic music? To be honest with you, I’d never really listened to any before. It was quite a shock to me and I’m guessing it was to the other people as well. Did you think you’d win? God, no! Do you think your voice and style of music has changed since entering the show? Yeah, I greatly enjoy the opera. I’d never give up on it now, I’m just thinking of how to cleverly incorporate it into my albums. I’m doing a Christmas album at the minute, which I actually
finished recording yesterday, and it’s looking at how to bring opera into things like that. It’s really interesting getting my usual style and the opera onto one album. It means you have to be really clear on what you’re doing, it gives you a lot of room to grow and styles to work with. You rose to fame after winning the X Factor and you’ve had a pretty world wind two years. What has been your most proud moment? I’d say X Factor as that’s where it all kicked off and stated, but I’m proud of everything I’ve achieved. I’ve realised how lucky I am to be in the position I’m in. I always feel really proud when I’m in the recording studio, it’s my third album I’m onto now, and when I finished recording yesterday I just thought ‘WOW that’s three albums in two years!’ I’m quite impressed with that. I’ve achieved quite a bit for someone my age. Have you been watching this year’s X Factor? I’ve been catching bits of it when I can. Who have you got your money on to win? There’s no one that really stands out for me at the minute, but it’s still very early days. We’ll see who comes forwards. If you could, would you do the X Factor all over again? Definitely, it was one of the best experiences of my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it so I’d definitely do it again.

£6,000! I did the Great North Run a few weeks back. I like to think of new and interesting ways to raise money. I like to make it exciting for the people you’re raising the money for. I performed a live lounge set on the hospital radio and it was streamed
“I’m hoping the Southend crowds are really loud...” to all the different hospitals around the country and live streamed on the internet, so that was great fun. I love fundraising, and it’s really easy for me if I can go in and do something I love, like my singing, as it comes across and people get behind it a lot more. If you do something you’re positive about it comes out and rubs off on the people and helps you raise more money. People take really well to the singing! You mentioned your participation in the Great North Run, did you find it hard? How long did you have to train for? I trained a little bit for it, not as much as I should of ! It’s definitely good fun to take part in those kind of things, the atmosphere is always amazing. I was three minutes behind my time from last year but it was still a good time, so I was happy.
You’ve often been seen to go down the theatrical route? Is this something you would like to pursue in the future? I’m not too sure, it’s one of those things that can take up a lot of time in schedule, you’re very limited as to what else you can do when you’re involved in theatre. If the part was right and it was something I felt really passionate about then I’d definitely do it.
You are also due to release a Christmas Album. What Christmas treats do you have in store for us? It’s going to be called Classic Christmas, and it’s a lot of the older classic Christmas songs but with a modern twist on them. We used a full orchestra, which I think Christmas songs sound special with a full orchestra. We’ve got choirs on there too. I’m releasing ‘Last Christmas’ as a single so I’m dead excited about that. It’s just really festive, and gets you into the spirit!
You do a lot of charity work, especially for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Do you plan to carry on raising money for charity? Yes, I actually did an auction the other day for Breast Cancer, for a performance, and we raised
Are you excited to be performing in Essex? Yes! I performed in Clapham a few months back, and that was absolutely amazing, so I’m hoping that the Southend crowds are just as loud. We’re gonna have a lot of fun. It’s my favourite part of the job,
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
getting the crowd going and performing, so I’m gonna go crazy and have a party on stage! Is The Only Way Essex? Yes! I’ve watched the TV show, and I think it’s hilarious. They wouldn’t have me in though, being a Geordie, I’m not quite Essex-y enough for it! What do you love most about touring? It’s being in a different place and being able to perform every night. You see so many different types of audience and you meet so many people. I just love being out on stage and to do it every single night for a month is just amazing. Any ‘on the road’ stories to tell? Ah my, I’ve got plenty but I’d be here all day! There’s always a really fun vibe, and backstage we’re always messing around and playing pranks on each other, it’s such a great environment to be in. I couldn’t ask for more really. You were also snapped up for modeling, but what part of your success have you enjoyed more? I really enjoy the modeling, but I definitely enjoy the singing more. They go hand in hand really. I enjoy putting together portfolios and I’m used to it from doing album covers and magazines. There’s a few bits I have lined up that will add to my experience and give me opportunites as well. I wouldn’t call myself a model! What are you ambitions for the new album and looking forward to in the future? I just really hope people enjoy the album, and like the music, that’s what’s most important to me. As long as I’m singing as part of my job I’m happy but I want to better myself with each album and every project I work on. I want to be bigger and better!
Joe’s second album, Classics, debuted on the official UK top 40 albums chart at number 2 and was certified gold, within 10 days after the release. His Christmas Classics album will be released on November 28th. All tour dates and other information can be found on www.JoeMcElderryOfficial.com.

For men this season, a key piece to purchase is the Gilet. The Gilet is a perfect piece to layer under and is simple to wear yet effectively stylish. Stick to plain, dark colours such as navy, black, dark grey and burgundy, and team with long sleeved t-shirts or thin jumpers. Keep patterns neat – stripes or small cheques are must, anything more will make this look more comic than stylish. On colder days add a scarf, just tucked into the jumper to give it that high end fashion look. Emporio Armani exhibited several of these on their Milan catwalk. They stuck to dark colours and minimal accessories, matching leather Gilets with slick black leather gloves and dark tailored trousers. Try this charcoal piece from Topman for something a bit different. The burgundy shoulder detail really give this piece some character. Team with a burgundy light knit jumper and some dark smart trousers, perfect for work. Try some smart-casual trousers like these Tommy Hilfiger ones for an effortlessly cool appearance. Complete the look with some of the bang on trend work man boots or some lighter desert boots. The fantastic thing about this look is that it can be adapted to men of all ages for all occasions.

This month’s key piece to invest in is the one piece. There are so many varieties out there at the moment – everything from the tailored, neutral style perfect for work and the glitzy embellished styles which are ideal for the upcoming Christmas party season. The catwalks were bursting with an assortment of full length jumpsuits, simple in style yet made from luxurious materials such as satin and silk. The jumpsuit is the ideal piece for the appearance of effortless glamour, laidback yet fabulous! This trend takes influence from the 1970s, a trend which dominated the catwalks last season. For the winter months stick to wide legged pieces, palazzo pant bottoms, with a simple top half such as a halter neck. Accessorise with minimal accessories, a simple skinny waist belt is just enough to break the outfit down and emphasize the waist. Team with sky high heels and delicate jewellery. This burgundy crepe jumpsuit from Oasis ticks all the boxes. Its colour is bang on the jewel tone trend which is huge right now and the shape is beautifully flattering and elegant. The cut of the trousers falls beautifully over the legs and creates the illusion of height. Team with a simple wristwatch in a matching tone like this Fossil leather wrap watch – perfect for day or night. To really glam up this look wear with skyscraper black platform heels and a simple black oversized clutch bag.

he Only Way is Essex stars Kirk and Mick Norcross, and the new twins Dino and Georgio, popped into MENACE Male Grooming in Shenfield for some filming, and of course some pampering!
the only way is
menace!
With the rise in the male grooming industry, the opening four years ago of Menace Male Grooming, came as no surprise. Four years on Menace has had a great response and is a huge success, being named the Best Male Grooming Salon in the entire UK 2011, and the creator Matthew Norris was recently twice named the Essex Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010. Menace, based at 196 Hutton Road, Shenfield, and set over two floors, has been described by its customers as ‘Shenfield’s little secret’. It is a salon
“A number of the guys from the show are already customers.....” strictly for men and a place where they can go to relax, unwind and have a well deserved pamper. Treatments on offer include Cut-Throat Shaves, Facials, Massage, Sports Massage, Indian Head Massage, Hot Stones Massage, Waxing, Botox, Ear Candles, non chemical skin peels, Maintenance Manicures and Pedicures. They even offer ear and nostril hair removal. Haircuts are on offer too for both men and boys. Well it’s certainly not a secret anymore. TOWIE’s Mick and Kirk Norcross enjoyed Indian head massages, whilst twins Dino and Georgio got their backs waxed. Priceless publicity for the award winning salon. Founder of Menace, Matthew Norris, explained “So
far they have filmed here twice, and will probably be filming again. It has been a fun experience for the team, and a great plug for the business. The show has a number of skeptics, and it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s just a bit of fun, and we have embraced it. A number of the guys from the show are already customers, so it made sense to be a part of it.” Menace was the first ever male only salon in Essex and owner Matt Norris commented; “Male grooming salons have been popular in London for years and the male grooming industry has been growing steadily, but I still knew it was a risk opening the first one in Essex. However, men in Essex have embraced the concept and I am thrilled
to now be compared to salons across the country and own the best male grooming salon in the UK!” The concept is complemented by an extensive and easy-to-use website. It allows visitors to book treatments, purchase gift vouchers and gain grooming tips. All treatments, haircuts, packages and vouchers can be viewed and booked online on the easy-to-use MENACE website www.menacegrooming.co.uk or call to book 01277 202448. e: pr@menacegrooming.co.uk MENACE Male Grooming, 1st Floor 196 Hutton Road, Shenfield, Essex, CM15 8NR

This month I met with the lovely Lydia Rose Bright to create some very unusual nails for series three of TOWIE. With both of us being very creative we came up with some fantastic fruity nails and the results were brilliant, we were both extremely excited! Later on that evening, I received a text from Lydia, who had attended a BlackBerry event where Jessie J had been performing, saying “Oh my god, nails have gone off the hook!” I was so so happy. They also looked amazing on TV too! Make sure you look out for more funky nails from Lydia throughout TOWIE.
I had even more excitement this month when I was given the most amazing opportunity to create the nails for the beautiful Hollyoaks girls for the ‘Inside Soap Awards’. WOW! I met up with Alice Barlow (who plays Rae), in a very posh London hotel! We spent the whole evening choosing nails to match her gorgeous sparkly dress and getting her ready for the awards. It was so much fun! We then went on a hunt for Carley Stenson to shine up her nails for the event and I ended up meeting even more of the cast! I chatted with Jessica Fox (who plays Nancy Hayton) and Danny Mac (who plays Mark Dodger Savage) who is also in the running for the ‘Sexiest Male’ award! I had such an amazing time. My Mum also joined me and we mingled with lots of soap stars in the hotel bar where I met Emmett J Scanlan (who plays Brendan Brady), Alex Carter (who plays Lee Hunter) and the lovely Bronagh Waugh (who plays Cheryl). Bronagh really wanted me to do her nails but
unfortunately she arrived too late but we are hoping to meet up again. The following day I received a text from Alice saying thank you for my nails and how much she loved them. This is why I love my job! I have really had the most incredible month of my life! Not only did I get to see Beverly Knight again as she flew off to Malawi with red sparkly nails, I got to meet and create nails for Kerry Katona. Although it was last minute, it was brilliant and I still haven’t taken it all in! I spoke to Kerry over the phone as she wanted me to do some sparkly nails for a TV appearance, I was very excited! I was working in London most of the day so I was worried I wouldn’t make it but after rushing home, I arrived at Kerry’s house and was greeted by Danielle Brown and Kerry’s oldest daughter Molly. It was such a relaxed atmosphere and everyone was in their PJ’s! Kerry has such an amazing sense of humour and I felt more than welcome. Kerry loved the nails and even joked ‘when can you move in’! I was over the moon and it’s great to see my hard work and determination is paying off ! Alongside this, I have had non stop work with all my regular clients and they have loved seeing my nails on TV and all the new celebrities I meet, it makes coming into my salon a little more exciting for them!

Normal Skin
This is the most common of skin types and has the following characteristics: Even-textured, problem free without spots or blemishes and looks smooth, healthy and clear.
Tips to keep normal skin looking good: • •
Follow a sensible skincare routine using a good quality facial wash every day and a scrub once or twice a week. Use a lightweight moisturiser that won’t overload the skin at least once a day.
Dry Skin
Dry skin can leave your face feeling itchy and uncomfortable and has the following characteristics: Feels uncomfortable and tight, especially after shaving or washing. It can peel, flake and look scaly and lined, look older as its rough, dull surface does not reflect the light very effectively.
Tips for dry skin: • • • • • • •
Use a gentle facial wash that won’t dry the skin further. Use a facial scrub once a week to remove dead cells but don’t rub too hard or for too long. Use a good moisturiser twice a day. Avoid shaving foams and soap that will dry the surface layer of the skin. Use a sun protection of at least factor 15 when ever you are outside. Drink plenty of water (beer and wine don’t count!) to prevent dehydration, especially if you work in an air conditioned office. Take fish oil capsules daily to provide essential fatty acids.

Moisturisers...
Sensitive Skin
This is quite a difficult skin type as you can react to quite a few products, leaving your face feeling very sore. You have sensitive skin if it has the following characteristics: Reacts to many skincare and shaving products, usually turning red and botchy. Has a tendency to go red when touched, exposed to heat or to the sun. Reacts to certain foods or fragrances that cause a rash or make your skin itch. You may have broken red veins on the cheeks and nose.
Tips for sensitive skin: • • • •
Avoid anything containing harsh chemicals or a lot of perfume. Avoid soap and always try to select products designed for sensitive skin. Always protect sensitive skin from the sun even in cooler weather. Patch test any new products on the inside of your wrist before using them on your face.
We’ve picked the best moisturisers for each skin group to help give you a supple complexion. www.mankind.co.uk 1. Dry Skin: Nickel Moisturiser £23.50
Combination skin is when some parts of your face are dry or flaky, while other parts of your face is oily. These are the following characteristics:
3. Normal Skin: Eve LomDay Cream £34.00
A combination of two or more of the above skin types. Oily areas are normally straight down the middle of your face, the centre of the forehead, nose and chin (T-Zone). Dry areas are often the cheeks and sometimes the forehead.
5. Combination Skin: Clinique 3-Step Skin Care System £49.00
• • • •
Take care not to use products that are too harsh and that will dry your skin out. Also nothing too greasy as this will only aggrevate the problem. Try different products on different areas i.e. oil-free on the greasy areas and moisturiser on the dry areas. Try specific products for combination skin.
Oily skin can lead to acne breakouts but fear not, you can regain your flawless skin once again. Oily skin has the following characteristics: Greasy and shiny, especially on the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), is prone to open pores, blackheads, spots and pimples and dull looking and patchy. • •

Keep it as clean as possible by using a good quality facial wash twice a day, a facial scrub two or three time a week and an oil-free moisturiser that will leave the skin matt, once a day. A clay mask used weekly, can also make a big difference. As the clay dries it absorbs the excess oil from the pores, along with dirt and dead skin cells. This helps to keep the pores clean. Over a period of time a clay mask will help to reduce the appearance of open pores as the blockages that make them appear larger are removed. Take care not to over stimulate oily skin with harsh products or those that will over dry the skin. Avoid soap as it will disturb the skin’s natural protective layer and make the problem worse.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Ashtanga Vinyasa
Ashtanga means ‘eight limbs’ in Sanskrit and Vinyasa relates to movements and breath. Ashtanga Vinyasa is slightly different to other yoga classes as a set order of poses is used. This type of yoga is often described as more energetic and fast-paced in terms of style. A class or practice is made up of four main parts. First there is an opening sequence, then one of the six main series postures, a back-bending sequence and finally a set of inverted postures, which is referred to as the finishing sequence. Practice then always ends with the resting pose ‘savasana’ or ‘gaya mudra’.

Hatha Yoga
This type of yoga is one of the most practiced. Generally Hatha classes are slow-paced and mild and are a great way to ease yourself into the art of yoga, proving highly beneficial for beginners. Hatha can be used to describe any type of yoga that focuses on postures and alignment, and requires individuals to hold poses while breathing with the movement. Practicing this type of yoga is a brilliant way to stretch out and strengthen your muscles, whilst also decreasing stress, and relaxing and uniting the body and the mind.

his prestigious and well-proportioned detached residence was constructed in 2008 as part of an exclusive private development of just eight luxury homes by upmarket developers, Charles Church. The property, originally designed as a five bedroom house, was converted into four bedrooms for the current owners who opted for an extra-spacious second bedroom. It could, however, be reinstated as a five bedroom property with minimal work. The property occupies a premium plot within this private cul-de-sac and is one of the largest on the development, enjoying attractive views over adjoining countryside. Once inside this stunning home, one is drawn to the relaxed, contemporary design which incorporates the use of exposed structural timber beams and stanchions, along with feature brickwork and an impressive Inglenook fireplace in the drawing room. In many ways, this superb contemporary property, has much to offer in terms of its size, design, home entertainment facilities, finish and location, making this home worthy of an immediate internal viewing. Mortgage Review
HOMES & INTERIORS

50% more Mortgage products available compared to last year! The debate taking place in recent weeks has not been focused on whether or not the Monetary Policy Committee raise or reduce interest rates this month, but instead has centred around their decision regarding the re-introduction of their programme of monetary stimulus known as Quantitative Easing (QE). The Bank base rate has remained unchanged but the decision has been made that a further £75bn of new money will be injected into the economy through the purchase of assets including government bonds. With the UK’s underwhelming second quarter gross domestic product figures actually being revised downwards to only 0.1% from a previously reported 0.2%, it would appear that the MPC has recognised that the economy is in need of further medicine to attempt to keep us from falling back into recession. This combined with the continuing crisis in the Eurozone is having a further negative effect on already weak consumer confidence. Activity in the mortgage arena has been fairly steady throughout the summer period and we have witnessed a small upward bounce in activity during September, which from a seasonal historic perspective is fairly normal, albeit at lower overall volume levels than in the boom years. In spite of the turmoil in world stock markets and the Eurozone debt crisis, the UK mortgage market has continued to be reasonably robust. Mortgage product pricing remains at low levels with Moneyfacts reporting that borrowers requiring 90% LTV, traditionally first time buyers
WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK
and those movers with low levels of equity, can now access 2 year fixed rates at an average of 5.39%. The average 2 year fixed rate is now 4.22% - marginally up on September - but 5 year fixed rates have fallen further and the average is now 4.73%. These rates have stimulated increased activity amongst purchase and remortgage borrowers during September as people capitalise on these unprecedented rates. Overall mortgage product numbers declined a little in September but have rebounded in the first week of October, returning to levels similar to August. Intermediaries currently have access to around 7,300 deals, almost 50% more than the same period last year. Mark Flavin is from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd. For further information on how the latest base rate decision affects you, please call 01702 423900 or email mark@miurafinancial.co.uk. with Lemon Thyme Mayonnaise
T
his month we have a fantastic seasonal dish, crayfish, with a twist on the traditional prawn cocktail using a sumptuous lemon thyme mayonnaise. Beautiful!
First, prepare the court bouillon. Put all the ingredients for the court bouillon into a large saucepan and fill up to two thirds with cold water. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and let simmer for about 20 minutes. Strain the liquid through a fine sieve into a deep bowl or measuring jug. Discard the solids. Pour the strained liquid into a clean pan and bring back to a simmer. Add the crayfish and gently poach for 3-4 minutes until the shells turn an orangey brown. Refresh in a bowl of iced water, drain well and remove the flesh from the shells. (The leftover court bouillon can be saved for other fish recipes.)
To make the mayonnaise, place the egg yolks, wine vinegar and English mustard in a food processor and whiz until thick and creamy. With the motor running, add the oil in a very slow trickle until well emulsified. (If the mayonnaise splits, mix another egg yolk with a little mustard and slowly whisk in the split mixture. It should re-emulsify.) Season well with salt and pepper and whisk in enough lemon juice to taste. If the sauce is still very thick, stir in a little hot water a tablespoon at a time until you’ve reached the right consistency. Taste and adjust the seasoning again before stirring in the lemon thyme leaves. Spoon the lemon thyme mayonnaise into four individual dipping bowls and serve with the crayfish tails.

pening just this July, Lanes is a new addition to Upminster Town Centre and it has already, in this short time, made the finals for ‘Havering Restaurant of the Year’ award by its impressed clients. RM was invited down to sample the delights on their menu, and what an amazing time we had!

The Restaurant
Lanes is best described as an intimate venue serving the finest selection of seasonal and local British food to a background of classic music from the likes of Nat King Cole, Nina Simone and Frank Sinatra- we love a bit of retro chic at RM! The decor is reminiscent of a stylish French restaurant including some stunning traditional furniture with a modern twist. There is an outdoor seating area that overlooks St Laurence’s Church which will no doubt be popular in the warmer Summer months.
who would rather there is lamb, duck, chicken and even the pan roasted fillet steak (which comes highly recommended from us!) All of these can be accompanied by a selection of traditional vegetables. In terms of desserts, there is truly something for everyone- Chocolate fondue, sticky toffee pudding, cheesecakes and an array of unique sorbets including: Plum and Pimms, Vanilla and Mint, Honey and Pecan and Champagne. Opt for a taster
An ideal venue for all occasions from a first date to a family meal, the staff were welcoming and proprietor Jordanna Gray could not have done more to make us feel at home. They were attentive throughout the meal and were obviously proud when speaking of their business and its success, and quite rightly so!

The Food:
selection and these all come sweetly displayed in tiny glasses- looking almost too good to eat! For those with children, a special menu is provided, consisting of pastas and some family favourites including fish and chips and even a mini cheeseburger meal so younger visitors feel perfectly at home!
Quite simply to die for! The mouth-watering aromas that greeted us from the kitchen were a sure sign of the quality of the food that was served. Fresh, flavourful and presented beautifully- it does not disappoint. Although there is a wide choice of fine seafood for starters and mains, for those
The cocktail menu rivals that of any good city bar with Daiquiris, fruit Mojitos, classics (such as the Harvey Wallbanger and the Tom Collins) and even a few champagne cocktails for that special occasion. Lanes does not just have an amazing array of dinner options but is also open for breakfast and lunch as well as providing a menu for ‘high tea.’ It is quite possible to make four visits in the same day and experience the different selection of each menu on offer... Breakfast includes a full on ‘Champagne breakfast’ with croissants, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and cream cheese accompanied by a glass of house champagne. During the lunch time sitting they serve a selection of carefully thought out baguettes as well as the famous Kobe Burger, billed as ‘Probably the Best Burger in the World!’ Afternoon tea brings an oh-so-British menu of sandwiches, cupcakes and renowned Fortnum and Mason teas so you can experience tea at the Ritz without leaving your home town!
In terms of cost, Lanes is on par with most independent restaurants with the cost at around £30 a head for a three-course meal (excluding drinks). But after our visit, we decided that this is a more than fair price to pay for food of this high standard!
The X-Factor:
Quality food with a home-made appeal sets this restaurant miles ahead of many popular chains. Best of all, they can deliver right to your front door (or your place of work) until 11pm each night free of charge if you spend over £20, and to top it off, Lanes even offers a dinner party service for those who would rather call in the pros! Lanes are currently working on a schedule of comedy and music acts to perform on special nights so watch this space for more info on up and coming events! ver thirty companies competed to win this year’s prestigious Havering Business Awards 2011. Open to all businesses in the London Borough of Havering, this year’s awards hosted twelve categories including a new addition that saw the public vote for the ‘Best Family Venue in Havering’. RM Magazine joined the celebrations and has brought you the complete run down of the night, including the results of each category and interviews with some of the worthy winners.
Best Entertainment Venue: The Queens Theatre
Havering Business Awards
2011
Hosted in the ever-magnificent setting of Maylands Golf club, this year’s Havering Business Award gala ceremony was a night to behold. Compered by the comical impressionist, Jon Culshaw, the evening was beautifully planned by Claire Hunt of KAT Creativ, Havering’s Awards and Event team, with fantastic food and drink being served in the decadently adorned venue, giving the night a superb atmosphere. Guests were treated to a mouth-watering fivecourse dinner, superbly cooked and presented by Lady Bountiful, who did a wonderful job. Anticipation and excitement was in the air during the lead up to the awards, as singer Miguel Buble performed timeless swing classics that encouraged the audience get up and dance.
Just before the awards were announced, Jon Culshaw produced an hilarious set, performing his well known George Bush, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair impressions, and also treating us to the delights of his new parodies such as Alan Carr and Michael McIntyre, which had us all in fits of laughter. At last the lights were dimmed and the drums were rolled in preparation for the presentation. First on the agenda was the Apprentice of the Year Award, which was won by Darren Thomas, Coborn Engineering Co Ltd. Next to be presented was the Best Family Venue Award. Voted by you, the public, we saw The Havering Museum beat The Queens Theatre and Kids Space Romford to pick up this key award.

Next to follow was Pub Of The Year. This was won by The Harrow for their unrelenting charity work and continued support within the local area. We spoke with manager Sarah Jeffries on winning the award. “We are jumping for joy, we absolutely love it! We do so much for our community and the fact that we have been recognized is the proudest moment of my career. I can honestly say to win the business award is just overwhelming. We are just thrilled. We aim to raise lots more money, working with the community and keep giving great value and great service.”

New Business of the Year: Medico-Legal Professionals Ltd

Next to be presented was the Green Award, which was won by Carzo Ltd for their environmentalism. Wayne Heath from Gymaphobics walked away with an impressive double, scooping the Business Person of the Year and the Customer Care award. Sanders Solicitors to pick up the Customer Care award. We caught up with the man of the moment to find out how he felt after winning both awards. “I am really shocked and pleasantly surprised to win. I mean to win two awards is fantastic. The Customer Care was the one the gym really wanted, which was a lovely win and I am really pleased about it, but to get the business person of the year award was just a brilliant accolade!” The penultimate award to be presented was the New Business of the Year Award. In the running were Devonshire Hotel, Medico-Legal Professionals Ltd and Academy of African Arts, all of whom were worthy nominees. However, there could only be one winner and that was Medico-Legal Professionals Ltd. What we had all been waiting for was the final award, The Havering Business of the Year. Pinney Talfourd Ltd, Romford Mazda and Total Site were the nominees, with all three companies eager to win this prestigious business award. The atmosphere was amazing and you could really feel the anticipation and excitement in the room.
Followed by a massive cheer and a standing ovation, Pinney Talfourd Solicitors was proudly announced as the winners. We caught up with Catherine Helen Polli from Pinney Talfourd who said, “We are absolutely thrilled. We didn’t expect it but we have had an amazing three years. We have just merged with Preston and Kerlys in Brentwood, which was fantastic, and we now hope to provide all of our services across three offices, opening early and late and having at least one office open on a Saturday. We are thrilled to be a part of the community in both Havering and in Brentwood.”
Innovation Award: Fruit for the Office
After the awards were presented, singer Carly Hipson and the Time FM roadshow entertained the guests well into the early hours.
RM Magazine would like to congratulate all winners and nominees on their considerable achievements and their continued support of our local community. After all the excitement we are definitely looking forward to next year’s awards.

Building on Ranger’s long-standing heritage of capability, the all-new model extends Ford’s credibility further, with selected European versions achieving a best-in-class towing capacity of 3350kg. New from the ground up – with everything changed except its name – new Ranger is the first commercial vehicle to be built under the One Ford strategy as part of a global product programme, bringing together the full engineering expertise of Ford around the world. Designed and developed in Australia, Ranger will be offered as a complete family of compact pick-ups with three different cab body styles, 4x2 and 4x4 drive trains, two ride heights and up to four series choices to suit every pocket and market. It will be produced in Thailand, South Africa and Argentina for more than 180 markets worldwide.

The aggressive and sporty stance of the new Ranger line-up is enhanced for the range-topper, Wildtrak. There is a unique colour split on the front and designers masked out the feature line on the fascia and contrasted it by highlighting the lower intake. The same accent colours were used on the side mirrors, door handles and side air vents to give the vehicle a dark sporty look. “Wildtrak's aggressive look and bold new graphics are a perfect fit for those who appreciate a sporty and more expressive image. It will look fantastic transporting the latest quad bike or jet ski for their weekend getaways,” said Craig Metros, chief designer of the all-new Ranger. which enhance its profile. Exclusive Wildtrak badging and graphics help to set it apart from other lifestyle vehicles.
Car-like levels of comfort and features!
The purposeful interior of the Wildtrak echoes the dark sporty look of the outside. A special hydrographic finish on the centre console around the audio is reminiscent of strong but lightweight materials like carbon fibre. The seat trim – a combination of leather and woven cloth inspired by sportswear with ventilated
sections – provides lateral support and confidence even on rough terrain. Contrast stitching and a discreet strip on the seat upper and bolster, all in distinctive Wildtrak Orange, accentuate the premium feel of the interior. The cabin of Ranger has been stretched to provide segment-leading spaciousness and comfort. Three passengers can easily fit in the second row of the Wildtrak, for instance. It offers ample knee room and better foot clearance between the B-pillar and the seat. This means that getting in and out of the new Ranger is easier than ever for rear-seat passengers.
LIFESTYLE
With 23 storage spaces in the cabin, Ranger offers more practical stowage than any competitor. A deep centre console bin will keep up to six cans of beverage cool, while the glove box is large enough to accommodate a 16-inch laptop computer. Ample storage for mobile phones and other small items can be found in the console. Also poised to be a leader in innovation, Ranger Wildtrak comes with Bluetooth速 audio streaming, USB and iPod connectivity. There is voice control over the radio, CD, iPod, USB, air-conditioning and phone. It also offers a five-inch colour screen with satellite navigation.
More power, more torque!
There is a choice of two state-of-the-art commonrail Ford Duratorq TDCi diesels and new fuelefficient six-speed transmissions that serve up more power and torque. The new, Dagenham-built, 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel delivers peak torque output of 375 Nm and power output of 150 PS, whilst a highly responsive and efficient new 3.2-litre 5-cylinder diesel produces a powerful 470 Nm of torque is power rated at 200PS. Both new powertrains have been developed and refined to deliver excellent fuel economy that is among the best in class. Fitted
with an 80-litre fuel tank, Ranger is also expected to have one of the longest ranges in its segment. The new Ranger also features smart Ford technologies such as Adaptive Automatic Mode, which adapts gear shifts according to driving style and Grade Control Logic, which automatically downshifts when driving downhill and the brake pedal is depressed. This feature prevents the transmission from changing to a higher gear.
So what are you waiting for? Get yourself down to your local Ford dealership and have a test drive!

he iPhone 4S launched on the 14th October with the normal charade only Apple can get away with, but not even Apple could have predicted the extra boast they were about to receive courtesy of the problems over at Blackberry. Blackberry engineers had to race against the clock to fix an 'outage' that left customers on five continents without email or instant messaging for days, not once but twice. Here, we’ve brought you the RM review on the new iPhone 4S.
Apple’s new
offering With over 200 improvements the new iPhone 4S promises some new impressive features including a Dual-Core A5 chip, all-new 8MP camera and optics, iOS 5, iCloud and along with Siri. It’s set to be the most amazing iPhone yet.
The Technology
Siri on iPhone 4S lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking the way you talk. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back. Siri is so easy to use and does so much, you’ll keep finding more and more ways to use it.
The Operating System
With its easy-to-use interface, amazing features, and rock-solid stability, iOS is the foundation of iPhone. And even as others try to catch up, the technologies and features built into iOS keep the iPhone years ahead.
The Processor
Dual core in the A5 chip deliver up to two times more power and up to seven times faster graphics, play and you’ll feel the effects. It’s fast. The iPhone 4S is quick and responsive, which makes all the difference when you’re launching apps, browsing the web, gaming and doing just about everything. No matter what you’re doing, you can keep on doing it because the A5 chip is so powerefficient and has an outstanding battery life.
The Camera
With 8 megapixels and all-new optics, this just might be the best camera ever on a mobile phone. It just might be the only camera you’ll ever need. If you think that’s amazing, wait until you see your photos.
The iCloud
iCloud stores your music, photos, documents and more and wirelessly pushes them to all your
devices. Automatic, effortless, and seamless — it just works!
Final Thoughts
Being one of the lucky few to get our Apple loving hands on the good stuff before most I was impressed with the new features and even how well Siri worked. I must say if you don’t have the iPhone 4 already then the 4S is a worthy investment. If you do have the 4 then just upgrade to the iOS 5 and hey presto you have most of the features for free!

The Touchpad
The new Asus N53’s and the outstanding Bang & Olufsen fired audio performance with super responsive touchpad, are just 2 of the features we love about this new offering from Asus. ‘Good Audio’ & ‘Laptop’ is not something normally mentioned in the same sentence, but Asus have teamed up with Bang & Olufsen’s power giants to bring the best sound to this classy looking 15.6-inch model, the ASUS N53 is certainly attractive. It’s designed within an inch of its life to look beautiful, with a great hinge and burnished aluminium effect on the front, complemented by a responsive chrome touchpad.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the living room... the radio controlled Air Swimmers Shark really does appear to be swimming impossibly through the air. This ingenious balloon is propelled by its sideways moving tail. Unlike normal helium balloons (which only want to go up) the Air Swimmer is balanced filled with helium – ensuring it simply hangs in the air. You can then use the radio control to make it swim. Up, down, left and right; with a bit of practice you’ll make your living room look like a giant aquarium! In fact, the Shark's movements are so graceful and gentle that it can be easily used in enclosed spaces, where twitchy RC helicopters and planes would struggle. Shufflin!
ctober 5th was the date and The Sugar Hut, Brentwood, was the place. It was time to don our best threads, apply the lippy and get ready for the party of the year. That’s right, it was the Shufflin.com launch party! RM headed down to the star-studded event to join in on the festivities of this incredible new social media site, and what a cracker we had!
Entering the Sugar Hut, the atmosphere was out of this world. Lit with a seductive glow, the venue, as always, screamed out glamour, we immediately knew this was going to be a great night! The place was littered with glamourous girls, all dressed up to the nines, and debonair guys, all here to celebrate this fantastic new social media site. Launched and founded by Wayne Lineker, Shufflin.com is destined to be the new Facebook. This multiple profile social network is a multidimensional networking site designed and created to benefit and satisfy everyone. And satisfy it does! With all the RM office already signed up, the feature of having multiple profiles is definitely a winner! Celebrities adorned the night with the likes of Bianca Gascoigne, Calum Best and Dean Gaffney gracing the club, which added excitement and poise to the night. Mick Norcross, as always, was fantastic. The Sugar Hut definitely lived up to its reputation and was a decedent and uber cool setting for the launch party.
Champagne was flowing, conversation was rife and the dance floor was filled to the brim with everyone throwing their best shapes and shaking their alluring hips. This was the ONLY place to be! Wayne said, “The night was a huge success for us and I was supported by friends and family which was very special for me and they came from all over the UK too. We had 800 people through the doors and all seemed to have enjoyed the night thoroughly!” We left the party with a smile on our face and a slight wobble in our steps, all signs of a fantastic night! After taking one last look at The Sugar Hut, we felt a twinge of sadness on leaving such a mind-blowing night.
So, if you’re not shufflin’ already then what are you waiting for? Get over to www.shufflin.com and be apart of the next big thing. It’ll be the best thing you’ll do this year!

ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW
With influences such as Fall Out Boy and You Me At Six, there was bound to be some doubt as to whether they could pull off such a high calibre of popular music class, but with Sam Storey, the lead singer, having a uniquely amazing voice, and the rest of the band all being so talented individually, this doubt should be erased instantly. The Debut haven’t been together all that long in comparison to most bands, yet they still have such a bond, a bond that would be imagined to have by those bands living in each others pockets for years on end, such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers. What is amazing though is that this bond is not only with each other, but with the crowds they draw to gigs. This band certainly has a very positive future ahead of them, and Ilkay Masar, the band’s very own Pete

his may come as a surprise to some of you readers, but believe it or not, Essex’s influence on the music scene is growing fast. With having so many wannabe rockers, and music being a main leader of fashion, it’s no shock that there are bands forming left, right and centre.

Hailing from Hornchurch, The Debut are an up and coming unsigned indie band. ‘Oh not another one!’ you must be thinking, but luckily theses five lovely lads have a little something extra to offer, they give the Indie Alternative scene a new flavour to pop rock, and are proving a pretty popular group with the ladies! Having heard that three off their songs on The Debut’s Mspace page have had over ten thousand plays between them, there are high expectations of this band, but they certainly live up to them. At gigs their energy oozes from their pours as they jump, kick and thrash around in true rock style, they leave Busted’s energy looking like a Sunday stroll in the park.
“We write some kick ass tunes and continue to have such fun in doing it!” Wentz with the little guitar tricks he throws in to add to the bands visuals certainly agrees with this. When he found some time for a quick chat in his busy schedule between band practice and university, he told me, “We wanna do a massive UK tour, hopefully record an amazing album, to get as many endorsements as we can, write some kick ass tunes and continue to have such fun in doing it!” He may be the smallest member of the band, but there is certainly nothing small about his ambitions and dreams! All gig dates, photographs, and music tracks can be found on www.myspace.com/debutuk, or by searching The Debut on Facebook. There are many other budding musicians in bands around the area, including the likes of Stereo Decade, The FiftyFours, Philippic Beatbox, and Rivalries. They are very promising talents and should definitely be checked out if you get the chance.
ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW
A game
of two
HALVES T
wenty-seven years since it became one of John Godber’s biggest hits, the charming tale, Up ‘n’ Under, graced the stage at The Queens Theatre, Hornchurch with its quick wit and northern humour. RM Magazine was invited along to review this game of two halves, and a game of two halves it certainly was! one could be. The first half was littered with quips and quick wit with the warm humour you would expect from the north, delivered with precision and passion from the ever-entertaining actors. The script and directing was solid, all down to the work of director Bob Carlton and writer John Godber. As the plot starts to unravel, you can soon see this is the story of the under dog. The team has to struggle through adversity, come up triumphant and become a strong team. Set mainly in the locker room, the banter between the players kept us all doubled over and the sly bit of nudity added a cheeky and mischievous tone to the play. The story followed a bungling pub rugby team from the Wheatsheaf Arms pubs in a rugby league sevens battle in Kingston upon Hull, England. The scene was set on a cold rugby field where former rugby payer Arthur, played by Simon Jessop, makes an ill-advised bet against his arch rival, Reg, played by Tom Jude, putting his life savings on the line. After claiming the Wheatsheaf Arms would beat The Cobblers, the bet is in place and so the play begins. Not being a fan of rugby, we wondered whether this play would maintain our attention, but how wrong
As Arthur began to get the men on his side, you soon see the personalities of the characters start to unstitch and the camaraderie beginning to grow within the team. The play is decorated with fantastically chosen film music, most predominantly the Rocky theme tune, which adds excitement and warmth. Karen Fisher-Pollard, who plays Hazel, narrates the play with soft rhymes that brings even the most furthest of viewers right into the thick of it. The closing gym room scene, which had us all in stitches, showed the true determination within the
team as they train hard for the rugby battle which brought a hilarious end to the first half. After a refuel we were ready to witness the delights on offer. The second half brought much more excitement and really pulled the audience in. You began to feel the passion for winning and become enthralled within the characters and their want for victory. It delved deeper into the characters woes and past misfortunes and unravels the underlying morals of unity and teamwork, which began to surface. As the players began to believe in themselves, the hard work they put in truly sets them up for the final game. And what a final game it was! Full of intelligent humour and hearty comedy, the end game was surely the cherry on the top, and as cheesy and predictable as this may sound, the moral of winning isn’t everything was the poignant message. All in all, a fantastic ending to a winning play. So, whether you are a rugby fan or not, this cute comedy was a definite hit for RM Magazine. It had all you needed from a play; comedy, heart and depth. The performances from the actors were second to none and they maintained the attention of the audience throughout. With solid script writing from the start, this play was always going to be a first class hit!
