Brother! E
nglish pop-rock band, Viva Brother, (previously known as Brother) have stormed the music scene being signed to both EMI and Geffen Records. With their debut album, Famous First Words released on August 1st 2011, are they destined to be the new Oasis? RM Magazine caught up with Sam Jackson, lead guitarist, to have a catch up and find out how the four lads are finding such sudden success.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Going through a recent name change from Brother to Viva Brother was never going to be easy when trying to establish the band, but it’s evident to see when talking to the boys that this hasn’t dented their confidence. “Viva is just a prefix.” described Sam. “It was a great way to engage with fans who have often chanted ‘Viva Brother’ at our gigs, it was something that they came up with.” But the guys are not strangers to name changes. Prior to their debut as Brother, the band had gone under numerous pseudonyms such as Kill the Arcade and Wolf Am I. Whilst under the name of ‘Wolf Am I’ , the band played predominantly pop punk and emo based music. “This was the time where we were finding ourselves.” said Sam. “We just played what suited us at the time and it was mostly pop punk.”
“We make Noel Gallagher look soft!” For the past two years Viva Brother’s musical style has taken a step over to ‘Gritpop’ and in our opinion, they have finally found what they do best and the boys seem to agree as well. “Gritpop?” asked Sam. “Well it’s Brit Pop but with more edge. We make Noel Gallagher look soft!” He laughs. The boys take inspiration from bands such as Blur, Stone Roses and The Smiths who have had a huge influence in the growth of Viva Brother and their music. Their debut album, whose name was decided half hour before an interview on Soccer AM whilst sitting out in the canteen, has had a little helping hand from legend Stephen Street. Street is best known for his work with The Smiths in the 1980s, as well as Blur and The Cranberries in the 1990s. He also collaborated with Morrissey on some of his most popular work after The Smiths broke up. More recently Street collaborated extensively with the Kaiser Chiefs on their first two albums.
Getting the chance to work with such a influential musician was more than overwhelming for the boys. Sam explained “The original plan was to have Stephen work on one track with us, after a few beers and numerous hours spent chilling at his place, we’d pretty much completed our album! It was such a surreal experience as he’d produced some of our favourite ever tracks!” With the festival season in full swing this Summer, it wasn’t time for the lads of Viva Bother to catch a tan as they were busy working. That’s if you can call being one of the hottest bands around work! They were second headline act of Y-Not Festival and although they were cursed by British weather, the crowds were one of the most up for it crowds Viva Brother had ever witnessed. At the other end of the scale, the lads headlined the ‘Other Stage’ at Glastonbury. Gushing with excitement, Sam told us. “I can’t explain how much of a good gig that was. We felt incredibly privileged being asked to play and it was definitely the best gig we had ever played.” On top of that, the boys have also spent a lot of the summer out touring in America and Japan. Having been to America three times already, the band are beginning to feel at home. “I think the Americans have taken to us quite nicely.” explains Sam. “ It’s been really good.” The boys have never been to Japan, yet they have already shot in at number two in the Japanese charts, only a staggering three days after their album was released. “It was crazy.” says Sam. “The only album to beat us to the top spot was a charity album in aid of the Japanese Earthquake!”
After their rollercoaster year, Viva Brother has certainly achieved so much in such a short amount of time and the boys are still looking to the future. “We believe in our music but we have a laugh with it. I really do think we can be the biggest band in the world.” And we agree. So, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more as here at RM, we feel they may just be the next big thing.
You can find all tour details, buy the album and watch videos of the lad on www.acidlove.net.

This autumn there is no need to dull down your wardrobe with the traditional autumn palette – jewel colours are in! Think deep Amethyst, Sapphire and luxurious Emerald Green for a sumptuous autumn look. Wear as an alternative to black, day or night, for this ultra feminine look. This trend encapsulates the allure of 1940s sophistication. It has connotations of opulence and luxury, utter femininity. If you are feeling really brave wear jewel tones head to toe, making sure to stick to the same colour. This trend is about being demure, not about clashing prints. If you want a more subtle approach to this trend then add a jewel accent to your wardrobe with a statement piece. A handbag or coat is perfect for this. Roksanda Ilincic had a beautiful collection of floor length gowns in jewel colours. This Ruby number is a personal favourite. The attention to detail within this look is perfect. Matching the makeup and nail varnish with the gown really makes the look stand out. To wear for work team a structured dress with matching shoes and other simple neutral accessories. Try this Citrine dress from ASOS. This beautiful dress features a boat neckline and a fitted waist. It is smart enough for the office but still bang on trend. Team with a neutral skinny waist belt and matching Citrine heels. Red or Dead at Schuh have a great pair of sky scrapper heels that can easily be worn day or night.

Ermenegildo Zegna Menswear A/W 2011
For the Boys
Men’s fashion takes a truly British stand this season with the Heritage trend. This trend is all about creating a look with the right layers, textures and patterns for that traditional vibe. Ermenegildo Zegna channelled their inner royalty with exquisite suits, shearling gloves and slicked back hair. Try tweed, corduroy and mohair materials but stick to one per outfit to stop this look appearing over the top. The ever popular Fair Isle print is perfect for knitwear. Try this stunning blue, long sleeved Fair Isle jumper from River Island and wear with tan corduroy trousers. A key purchase this season is a coat or jacket. Overcoats, duffle jackets and traditional British quilted jackets are ideal. By layering a stand out piece of knitwear under a slick blazer, you have perfected this look with no effort at all. A plain chunky jumper works well under a tweed blazer. For colder autumn days try a polo neck in navy or khaki. Finalise this look with some leather brogues or workman boots. These Kurt Geiger brogue boots combine the two flawlessly and are such amazing quality that they will last a lifetime. The price is definitely worth it as these boots are versatile and will suit future trends. Accessories are a must for this look but stick to one key piece to avoid looking theatrical. For a plain shirt and trouser outfit add a patterned woollen tie for the right amount of texture.

o what have I been up to since my last article? Well, lots! Firstly I met the lovely Beverley Knight who was fabulous. She modelled my nails on Lorraine's morning show and also on the Gino and Mel show. She was a genuine individual and we chatted away, hopefully gaining a very authentic friendship. I have done Beverley’s nails a couple of times now and her favourite nails have so far been the purple glitters!
Also this month, my nail art has been all over the TV, I’ve been a very lucky girl! Danielle Brown called me to glam up her nails for Big Brother's bit on the side, she showed off the green glitter nails I did amazingly! I also got to meet Emma Willis, the presenter, who I am a BIG fan of ! I had a really fabulous evening sitting in the green room with my Mum and the panel of Big Brother! I was very excited when Jess Wright from TOWIE asked for my trademark nails for her birthday bash! I turned up at her house and was greeted by the lovely Nanny Pat and their gorgeous minature daschund doggies! After I had a little play with them Jess picked her colour, a coral glitter which really complimented her tan, and I got to work. I enjoyed the whole experience and the family were very welcoming. Nanny Pat kept offering me drinks but I think what she really wanted to do was fill me up with her home made cottage pie! My highlight of the month has to be meeting Legally Blonde star Carley Stenson at the Savoy Theatre, London. I was so excited and felt so honoured that she asked me. When I turned up outside the Savoy hotel I thought, WOW that is one posh place, I could only dream to stay there! (its in my list of things to do!) Carley arrived like a breath of fresh air, complimenting me and helping me with my equipment. All I kept saying was thank you. She took me back stage to her dressing room, it all felt very surreal seeing the names of the cast on the dressing room doors. Carley was so so happy with the nails that she showed everyone, including the male staff ! We were both very happy that day and are hoping to meet again for some more exciting projects. Inbetween living my exciting life I have seen my fantastic regulars, tried out my new nail designs and also greeted some new clients that I hope will enjoy my work in the future!

he sunny days are disappearing and the lovely glow that summer gives your skin is slowly fading. It can only mean one thing: the start of winter. The change in season can do drastic things to your skin, from drying and chapping to the all too familiar bright red nose. Caring for your skin during the colder months requires different products, so if you want to avoid the “just been sledging in the North Pole” look, get these essentials to keep your skin looking gorgeous. 1. Keep hands protected and avoid cracking with Ethical Superstore’s Herbfarmacy Organic Citrus Hand Cream. For those freezing cold months get Badger’s Hardworking Hands Balm.

2. Even though the sun isn’t shining, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear sunscreen, the sun’s rays are just as harmful in winter as in summer. Fitness By Skye Lyselle from Fit For Fashion 24/7
Overcoming the training plateau
T
his month’s topic is the dreaded ‘training plateau’ – that is when you are still going to the gym or attending your classes and the results are becoming less noticeable and you feel that you’re not seeing the weight loss, toning or improved fitness that you were after. For obvious reasons this is the time when most people, feeling despondent, drop out and give up. Before you abandon all hope read on to discover why this is happening and ways to keep those results happening.
Typically the ‘plateau’ may occur at between 4-8 weeks into your now, not quite so new, fitness regime. The reason for this is that our bodies are designed to adapt and enable us to survive the challenges it faces (as a result of survival of the fittest over millions of years of evolution). Therefore, when you start a new fitness plan, your body - placed under the stress of this new activity – will begin to adapt to enable it to cope with the new demand in the most effective, energy conserving way possible. There is a fancy term in the world of training for this which is the S.A.I.D. principle – Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demand. However, the downside of having such clever bodies is that once the body has made these changes and becomes familiar with your training – the results stop occurring also. So how to overcome this? The answer is actually very simple, change your routine every 4-6 weeks. The best way to ensure this is effective is
to speak with your gym instructor or perhaps hire a personal trainer to write you a new programme to follow. This is called ‘progressing’ your fitness plan and for any anatomical, physiological or biological adaptations to take place, the body systems must be given more than they are used to. This may sound daunting and perhaps like the goal posts are moving eternally further away, but this is not the case at all. Instead it makes for a more interesting and varied programme, the opportunity to try something new and best of all, a body which is becoming more capable and functional.
As a final note, it is also important to allocate ‘rest days’ into your programme and the consequences of not doing this can also prevent your progression. I will write more about this next month. Be fit, be healthy, be happy, 24/7 Skye, REPS L3 Personal Trainer & Dynamic Yoga Instructor

Spire Hartswood Achieve
Macmillan Accreditation
B
rentwood’s Spire Hartswood Hospital adds another accreditation to its belt after achieving the coveted Macmillan Quality Enviroment Mark. This fantastic honor was awarded for the hospital’s outstanding cancer services to patients, which include diagnostic and treatment services for breast cancer.
A spokes person from Macmillan explained; “The award is not given lightly, as it is dependent upon meeting standards pertaining to excellence in the physical environment in cancer care. These standards were developed by Macmillan Cancer Support after extensive consultation with people affected by cancer. The formal assessment is a rigorous process undertaken by a third party organisation of professional assessors with broad experience in healthcare. Spire Hartswood Hospital is the first private hospital in the county of Essex to receive this award.” Alongside this, in the last three years Spire Healthcare has invested around three million pounds in Spire Hartswood Hospital which has resulted in new MRI and CT scanners and a new Sterile Services Department. The SSD, which cost nearly one million pounds to build, enables the hospital to wash, disinfect and sterilise all of its operating theatre instruments on site to the latest regulatory standards. Mr Sunil Kumar, consultant orthopedic surgeon and Chair of the Clinical Governance Committee at the Hospital is impressed: “Spire Hartswood Hospital has always taken its healthcare standards seriously. This investment brings its facilities up to a standard that ensures,
22
WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK
as far as possible, that patients are being treated in a clean and safe environment.” “Having an SSD on site also allows the hospital to have a quicker turnaround time for theatre instruments. This is positive for surgeons and patients because the hospital can supply a faster, smoother and more reliable service to meet patient demand. ” Hospital Director, Mark Gilmour comments: “We are the only hospital in Brentwood that will have these facilities on site. Importantly it also means that we will be held fully accountable by the patients and consultants who use our theatres and we felt, as a responsible healthcare provider, that this is the way it should be. This work continues our huge programme of investment aimed at delivering the highest standards of care and service.”

Mortgage Review
HOMES & INTERIORS
Mortgage lenders in the UK continue to support the market with excellent value products. Mark Flavin from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd comments on the latest Bank of England base rate decision. Another month has passed with no change to the Bank of England base rate following the monthly Monetary Policy Committee meeting earlier in September. Recent debate has been focused upon whether the MPC would vote to recommence the process known as quantitative easing - in essence the printing of money - to stimulate the economy due to persistent growth weakness. Once again the vote was for no increase in the process known as the “asset purchase programme”, but with the economy having been confirmed to have grown by only 0.2% in the second quarter of this year, we may be approaching the point where the policy setters are required to apply further medicine to what appears to be a patient still very much in intensive care. Mortgage lenders in the UK continue to support the market with excellent value products. Although we saw borrower numbers in August reduce by approximately 3% compared to July, this can largely be attributed to seasonal factors. Compared to the same period in 2010, we witnessed a significant rise in activity in both the purchase and remortgage sector as people
36 WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK
continue to take advantage of the excellent value of rates on offer relative to historic levels. Average mortgage rates for two year fixed rate deals were 4.27% in August, but five year fixed rates have fallen below that psychologically important 5% level with Moneyfacts reporting that average five year deals now stand at 4.93%. The number of mortgage products has decreased to the 6,500 level, but is still significantly ahead of the corresponding period in 2010 when intermediaries would typically have only had access to approximately 4,600 deals. This provides further evidence that the market (although nowhere near back to what we would have called “normal”) is in a much healthier position now than twelve or twenty four months ago. Mark Flavin is from Miura Financial Solutions Ltd. For further information on how the latest base rate decision affects you, please call 01702 423900 or email mark@miurafinancial.co.uk. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. A fee of up to 1% of the mortgage amount may be charged depending on individual circumstances. A typical fee is £95.00.

1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 225g risotto rice 500g pumpkin or 1 small butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into 1cm pieces 2 large fresh sage leaves, finely chopped Pinch of saffron 850ml vegetable stock, hot 150g frozen sweetcorn 125g mozzarella cheese, diced

n the spirit of Halloween, we thought this month we’d bring you a pumpkin inspired recipie that was more than just your usual soup. Tuck into this dish! Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based pan over a moderate heat. Stir in the onion and garlic and cook gently for 4–5 minutes until softened but not browned, stirring occasionally. Stir in the rice, pumpkin or butternut squash and sage leaves and cook for 2 minutes longer. Stir the saffron into the hot stock, then pour about a quarter of the stock into the pan and stir well until it has almost all been absorbed, stirring frequently. Continue
adding the stock, only a ladleful at a time, making sure each is almost completely absorbed before adding the next, and stirring frequently to produce a creamy texture. With the last addition of stock add the sweetcorn and stir well. Once all the stock has been absorbed and the rice is tender (this will take about 20 minutes), stir in the mozzarella cheese. Season to taste, then cover the pan and allow to stand for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the risotto with the pumpkin seeds and serve at once.
Top Tip...
For that extra bit of kick, replace half the stock with a crisp white wine!

Comedy Club at The Queens Theatre Hornchurch Our first experience of the Comedy Club has to be one of the funniest nights in a long while. We arrived at the foyer and were promptly guided to our seats where we anxiously awaited the first act. The evening started with a bang and the laughs just carried on rolling in. Adam Bloom, Matthew Hardy & Ryan Mcdonnell got the audience involved from the outset and I’ve got to admit they all sailed very close to the wind, but everything was said in good humour. The star of the night had to be Adam Bloom, a very un-assuming man but boy can he make an audience laugh. If you would like to go to the next Comedy Club at the Queens Theatre its on Thursday 27 October with a top line-up of the best acts including Tim Clark, Nathan Caton and Abandoman. Show starts at 8.30pm and bar open from 6pm. £11. £9.50 concession.

ith total sales of around 1.42 million units, Volkswagen is one of the world’s most successful producers of convertibles. Part of this success story lies with the Golf Cabriolet: from 1979 to 2002, they sold a staggering 684,000 Golf Cabriolets. And now, after a nine year absence, the softtop Golf is back! – Inchcape Volkswagen in Harold wood gave us the keys to their 1.6 Diesel GT model, and wow! it was certainly worth the wait!
First shown earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the new two-door, four-seater, frontengined soft top joins the range alongside the Eos hard-top convertible. It is fitted as standard with an electrically-powered fabric roof which can be lowered in just 9.5 seconds including on the move at speeds up to around 18mph. Unlike many cabriolets the new Golf has an uninterrupted 250 litres of available boot space with roof up or down, lots of space for all those shopping bags! The Golf Cabriolet is around 20cm shorter than the Eos, measuring 4,246mm in length, 1,423mm in height and 1,782mm wide. The 2,578mm wheelbase (same as Golf hatchback) ensures there is plenty of interior space for all four passengers,
while a 50:50 split/folding rear seat and easy entry function ensure maximum practicality and good access to the rear. At the front, the grille and bonnet make the new soft-top model clearly identifiable as a Golf; however from the heavily raked windscreen back it’s all new, giving a sportier appearance. At the rear, new led lights plus a deep crease in the bootlid are distinctive design features. What can’t be seen from the outside are the differences that have been incorporated under the skin. In changing the hatchback to a soft-top, modifications were made to ensure that safety, comfort and refinement were not compromised in the cabriolet version. These include reinforced window frames and structural modifications to the underbody, side panels, cross-members and doors to endow the new car with an extremely high level of torsional rigidity. Also benefiting refinement is the design of the fabric roof which has an additional exterior skin, as well as new window and door seals. Safety has always been a Golf attribute and the Cabriolet is no different in this respect. An active rollover protection system is employed, ABS, ESP and front
and side head/thorax airbags are also all standard. The new Golf Cabriolet is available with a choice of three engines: a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS. A further petrol and two diesels will be offered later in the year. DSG automatic transmission will be offered while BlueMotion Technology modifications has been applied to the diesel engines to ensure high efficiency and low emissions. Three trim levels are offered – S, SE and GT – all have a high level of standard specification, 16inch alloy wheels, and Bluetooth among other items. Moving up to SE, features such as 2Zone climate control, cruise control, parking sensors and automatic lights are added, while at the top of the range, GT adds a number of new highlights including sports suspension, Alcantara upholstery and 18inch alloy wheels. so, whether your cruising around Brentwood or driving down Billericay high street RM can guarantee you will have heads turning! To get a closer look or to arrange a testdrive of the stunning new Golf Cabriolet head down to Inchcape Volkswagen Romford – A12 Colchester Road, Harold Wood. RM3 0GU. M Magazine catch up with actor, producer and local Essex boy, Jason Maza, to talk about his upcoming film, working with N-Dubz Tulisa and his hopes for the future. Here’s what we got...
Born in Essex, actor and producer Jason Maza is best known for his hard hitting roles in cutting edge films such Anuvahood and Fishtank, working beside the likes of Noel Clarke. He has also produced four films in only a year, quite a feat for the Essex boy!

work with!” said Jason. “Really professional and down to earth. She did this before she got the Xfactor gig, now she’s massive!” After trying to convince Jason and the cast to attend the premiere in fancy dress, (well, why not?!) he told us a little about the plot. “Demons Never Die is a horror film where a young girl, played by Tulisa, takes her own life. Archie and the other Suicide Kids, including Jason, decide to follow her lead and form a pact. But as the group begins to die on by one, Archie realises that they have all become the target of a masked killer and that his commitment to death has become a terrifying fight for survival and a battle to protect the girl he loves”. Certainly something we at RM urge you all to see! Starting out as a semi-professional footballer playing for Hornchurch FC, Jason realized acting was the career he wanted to persue. “I loved playing football” Jason explained, “but my first love was acting and there is more longevity within the media than I would ever achieve with football.” Since making the transition to acting Jason, has tried his hand at producing, acting within films and television and even had a stint in theatre. He has worked on an incredible four films over the past year, one having just been released at the end of September, The Tapes, and the ever anticipated horror flick due out the end of this month, Demons Never Die. In RM’s eyes, these are his best pieces
of work yet. Speaking to Jason about ‘The Tapes’, you can see the enthusiasim and dedication he has for his work and his passion for acting. “The Tapes, having only been out for just over a week has been a great hit.” Explains Jason. “It’s giving horror films a new light. The plot is set around a Big Brother audition video that gets forgotten about. A group of friends end up at a devil worshipping party and things start to get a little weird! It’s well worth checking out!” His most recent horror flick, Demons Never Die, out in perfect time to spook you all at Halloween, (Oct 28th) features, woman of the moment, N-Dubz’s Tulsia. “Tulisa was an absolute joy to
Not only has Jason worked extremely hard on his new films, he’s also had the time to meet the amazing Bob Hoskins, one of his idols, and brought his home town Essex onto the big screen! When asking what Jason loves most about Essex, he told us, “I just simply love the area, the people and I am very lucky to have been brought up in Essex!”
Jason has high hopes for the future, including wanting to win a BAFTA as he feels that being British and having one is a such an accomplishment! RM Magazine are backing him all the way! WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK 53

Ghostbusting By Monique Hall
Coalhouse Fort, Princess Margaret Road, East Tilbury, Tilbury, Essex
Where the beloved TOWIE cast ventured to film ‘Ghosthunting’; boy does this place sound scary enough to knock your vajazzle jewels off ! The Coalhouse Fort is a Victorian coastal defence fort next to the river Thames at East Tilbury, Essex. The fort was completed in 1874, on the site of previous gun batteries, to defend the approach to London from the threat of invasion from France and other European continents. Many different things have been felt by visitors at this historic building. A man name George has made himself known repeatedly in the fort’s tunnels. One report by a group of paranormal investigators tells of a member of their team’s leg going numb, which she then started to drag without

having any control over doing so. There have also been reports of an apparition of a man with a burnt face pushing boxes around. During their paranormal investigation, the TOWIE cast spent the night visiting the fort’s underground tunnels, the gatehouse, and mess hall – with each location spurring on immensely comical TV viewing.
Borley Rectory, Borley, Essex
Borley Rectory is often described at one of the most haunted houses in Britain. The rectory was built by the Rev. Henry D. E. Bull in 1863 for himself, his wife and their 14 children. In 1892 the Reverend Bull died in the Blue Room and in 1927 Harry, his son, also passed away in the same room. As a result of the two deaths, the Blue Room
became known as the most haunted room in the rectory. Many people have commented that the rectory was fated to be haunted due to the ground it was built on, and the events that had already happened on the site of the property centuries before. It was built on the foundation of an age old priory, which included a 12th century Church, and a caretaker’s house amongst other buildings. A.C. Henning, the rector in 1936, discovered that the Doomsday Book told of a Borley Manor prior to 1066, which he presumed to be on the same plot of land; in short, the site on which Borley Rectory was built is pretty freaking old – an thus provides ample ghost stories that have amounted over the years. One of the most ghoulish stories surrounding the
ENTERTAINMENT Upminster Golf Club, 114 Hall Lane, Upminster, Essex
Golfers have reported seeing a young girl, about 12, dressed in white on the first floor hallway of the club house, as well as feeling someone brush past them when in fact no one is there. Locals believe the spirit is the ghost of a little girl who was kidnapped in the 17th century and hidden in the manor house (now the golf club house) where she was eventually murdered.
The Bell Hotel, Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex
The Bell is reputedly haunted by a lady called Kitty Canham – the 18th century beautiful bigamist from Thorpe-le-Soken. Kitty was married to the vicar of St. Michael’s Church, Alexander Gough, and was buried in Thorpe. Many strange occurrences have been reported in relation to Kitty’s spirit, including an account from a guest staying in room six in August 1972, who found when they woke up that a heavy wardrobe had been moved during the night in their room, and that the spare bed had been slept in. Indeed other people have reported the sensation of someone’s presence in the guest room when no one else was there.
Still not freaked out? Here are a few others haunting grounds to add to your ghost trail… Rectory goes back to the 14th Century. Legend has it that Benedictine Monks built a monastery on the Rectory site in 1362. Stories tell of a nun from a convent seven miles south-east of Borley falling in love with a monk from the monastery. The two planned to elope with the help of a friend of the monks, who was to arrange a carriage for them to escape in. When they tried to flee however, one of the monastery’s elders caught them. As a result the lovers and the coachman all met their end; the coachman was beheaded, the monk hanged and the nun was said to have been bricked up alive in the walls of the vaults beneath the rectory. Apparently their ghosts have haunted the site ever since, with the nun the most frequently sighted spirit. She is reported to favour July 28th to be her day of choice for scaring us mortals. The previous
owner of the Rectory Reverend Bull even had a summer house built in the garden so that he could sit and watch the nun whilst being safely indoors!
St. Nicholas Church, Canewdon, Essex
The village of Canewdon in Essex is reportedly a stellar place to go ghost hunting. Apparently the village is haunted by witches, a legend that has prominence worldwide and often draws many fans of the supernatural to the village each Halloween. Spirits spotted in the village include the ‘Gray Lady’ and an apparition of a young girl. The Gray lady appears on the grounds of St. Nicholas Church, which dates back to the 12th century, where she wanders the graveyard on moonless nights. The young girl spirit has been seen waiting at the end of the vicarage driveway, beside the entrance to the graveyard.
The Red Lion Hotel, 43 High St, Colchester
The Red Lion Hotel is a Grade I listed Building dating back to 1465. It is said to have two ghosts, one of which is a young girl who haunts the kitchen, and the other is a monk who perished in a fire.
Beeleigh Abbey, Maldon, Essex
Beeleigh Abbey was a monastery constructed in 1180 for the White Canons. It is said that the heart of Saint Roger of Beeleigh, who was a 13th century Bishop of London, was buried at Beeleigh. Because of this the abbey became a pilgrimage site throughout subsequent years, with visitors including King Edward I. Spooky activity has included spirits opening and closing a trap door within the abbey and beds being violently shaken.

omford Shopping Hall is one of Romford’s longest standing businesses and a leading retail location for East London and Essex.
Having completed a massive redevelopment in 2008 it is currently enjoying an exciting revival, bursting at the seams with a wide range of offers. With the new building Romford Shopping Hall is changing fast. The traders have experimented with providing designer labels and improve their offers at an affordable price. There is a fantastic collection of food operators, providing a comfortable environment in which to have a cup of tea and a chat. Pie and mash can be found at Terry McDowell’s, Oriental food is available from Sunrise Cafe and the Laurie and Teapot Cafes serve the best value sandwiches in town! Traditional market fare comes from the Hawkins family butchers. Those looking for something more exotic can visit the superb Chinese supermarket.
The non-food businesses are quirky and range from wedding dresses and fancy dresses, make up to make over’s and wigs to witches. In an age when so many markets are sidelined in new developments, the private family owners, Land Management, have stayed true to the small independent trader. Grand pilasters at the entrance lead into a light and airy market hall, with large roof lights over a central atrium and escalators from ground to first floor. The feel is traditional, but also modern with a truly family culture. At Romford Shopping Hall there really is something for everyone.

Performance the not so royal variety
R
aising around a whopping ÂŁ10,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Not So Royal Variety Performance, at The Brentwood Centre, was an amazing star studded charity event. Organised by Buddies For Kids, the show was everything expected and more, but with acts such as Stavros Flatley, Alan Cochrane and Russell Kane headlining, it was always going to be! RM Magazine was invited down, and what a fantastic night we had.

ENTERTAINMENT
Walking into The Brentwood Centre we were greeted on arrival and directed to our seats. Waiting in anticipation for the show to begin we eagerly scan our programmes for a sneak peek of the night ahead. Soon enough the lights start to dim and on stage bounds Elliott Reeve, BFK Director Mark Reeve’s son, singing ‘Little People’ from les Miserables followed by a huge street performance from ‘The Urban Set’. Comprised of Basketball, Free-running, Dancing and acrobatics, this phenomenal urban team performed some breathtaking stunts and amazing skills. Next to grace the stage was host and renowned comedian, Alan Cochrane who reeled off joke after joke and left us doubled over in laughter. After regaining our composure, up and coming comedian, Chris Ramsey, was introduced leaving us teetering on the edge of our seats once again. The astonishing contemporary dancer, Cascy from Spellbound, was up next performing a beautiful piece of dancing to the voice of singing sensation, Phil Cavill. Next on stage, and what we’d been so excited to see, was the hilarious Stavros Flatley. As expected they had everyone up on their feet, cheering and dancing. RM hadn’t seen so many people attempt River dance before and it was far from extraordinary! Before we knew it we had our arms around our neighbours and legs were flying around in an attempt to mimic, Flately. If we’re honest, I think most of us failed! Soon enough the interval came which gave us the chance to catch our breath, feed and water ourselves ready for the next assortment of acts taking to the stage. Elliot Reeve once again opened the show with Ethan Southgate, an incredible 9-year-old dancer, with a Batman and Joker inspired street dance. Next to blow our minds, literally, was Bruce Airhead and his metamorphosis of a man and a sixfoot balloon. To all our amazement he managed to climb inside a giant balloon and re appear dressed a Elvis Prestley!
The show also saw performances from La Troupe Delicieux, a gymnastic duo who performed a witty and seductive acrobatic table routine. Phil Cavill returned with songs from Les Miserables which he excecuted fantastically. Finally, headline act Russell Kane took to the stage and stole the show. The Essex boy’s fantastic stand up set had everyone crying and none of us wanted it to end. His slot lasted just short of half an hour with joke after joke spilling out about relationships, generations and life in Essex, by the end our sides were splitting! The night was a fantastic show with a great variety of acts. Here at RM, we are eagerly waiting to see what’s next from Buddies for Kids. Director Mark Reeve said; “The event took 9 months to put together and was a constant up hill battle, but the end result was a great show. There was a lot of happy faces at the end of the night and we are over the moon. The learning curve has been huge, none of the
committee members had done anything like it before. Next year there will be a lot of changes in the back stage production, but I honestly don’t think the show itself could have gone much better.” A huge congratulations goes out to Mark Reeve and everyone involved with Buddies for Kids and the Not So Royal Variety Performance. This amazing charity, comprised of a group of local business professionals, are dedicated to raising money for children’s charities and what a feat they have achieved. Boistrus and Miss Morgan
hit HMV
in aid of Teenage
Cancer Trust
E
ssex-born Boistrus and Miss Morgan, both 21, are releasing a new single in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. The single, ‘Partners in Crime’, will be available exclusively in HMV stores in Romford and Lakeside from Friday 22 October.
The artists first met at Emerson Park School in Havering where they immediately realised their mutual passion for music. They wrote and produced the single in London’s BGM Studio in memory of their friend, David Jacobs. David was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 18 and received some of his treatment on Teenage Cancer Trust‘s unit in London. After finishing his treatment, and spending the summer with his friends, David relapsed and sadly lost his battle in February.
Every day in the UK, six young people are told they have cancer. Usually placed on a children’s ward or with elderly patients, young people often feel extremely isolated whilst being treated for cancer. Teenage Cancer Trust believes young people shouldn’t stop being teenagers just because they have cancer. So the charity builds units in NHS hospitals that offer young people specialist care, bringing them together so they can support each other in an environment suited to their needs.
Boistrus said: “Shortly before he passed David told to 'Stick with the music, I know you'll make it'. From that day those words have stuck with me. We are glad to be doing something we love, in memory of a great friend and in support of an amazing charity, Teenage Cancer Trust. We really appreciate all the support from our friends, family and the local community.”
The units’ home-from-home feel creates a sense of normality, containing social areas with pool tables, comfy sofas, music, laptops, wifi, Skype and TVs. The specialist team and care combined with the bright and vibrant design aim to give young people with cancer the very best chance quality of life and chances of survival.
64
WWW.RMMAGAZINE.CO.UK
There are now currently 17 of these units across the country, including one in London. The charity plans to build a further 16 so that all young people needing hospital treatment for cancer across the UK have access to the dedicated, specialist support they provide. As well as specialist units, Teenage Cancer Trust also funds a number of services all with the same goal – to help young people fight cancer. These include clinical and research staff, an education programme for schools, family support networks and an annual conference for young cancer patients.

Alamode Words & Photography by Haydn Squibb
A
lamode are an incredible Essex five piece indie rock band who began back in 2005 when two of the lads, Stuart and Rory, started writing together in their music classes whilst at school. They began gigging locally and developing their sound before welcoming Rob, Stuarts younger brother, into the band and branching out into London. Venues such as ULU, The Monto Water Rats, The Garage, and The Purple Turtle have played host to their acoustic blues influenced music.
Alamode were runners-up in the Havering Raw Talent competition 2008 and have since progressed into a more mature and exciting group of musicians. The Blues are having more and more influence over their indie rock style and their incredible unique sound has started getting them attention on the gigging circuit, both locally and in London. Having been a huge hit on Phoenix FM’s Curveballs show the band are now offering copies of their new EP to anyone who gets in contact. With recent additions with James and Liam on
bass and drums they are looking to push on and fulfill their potential. Alamode previously came fourth in an online fast track competition, in which fans had to vote and rate tracks in order to try and win recording time at the famous Abbey Road studios. This inspired them to enter more of these styled competitions, and with their amazing fan bases help, they won the chance to perform at ‘The Most Famous Club in the World’, The Cavern, where The Beatles often played.
With several gigs booked and more in the pipeline over the coming months including Monto Water Rats, and The Workshop in Hoxton, expect to hear lots more from these guys in the future. They’re in the process of booking more local gigs also! For details of where to catch Alamode, and get yourself some tickets, check out www.alamode-band.com.
