From the

Editor July has been hot, hot, hot. We’ve all felt the burn of Mr. Sun with his smoking hat firmly on his head, (hip hip hooray) so let’s hope that this is the start of a real summer so that we can all rock the lobster skin look together. So, do you like the new size? Handbag size, travel size, and cute little magazine size, means that now you can take it anywhere that your heart desires. It’s not clutch bag size, but I’m sure you’ll forgive us of that. Trying to cram all of our awesome features and interviews into something that small simply wouldn’t be possible. The Duke of Essex Polo held at Hylands House in Chelmsford was a glamorous, eventful, and a thoroughly enjoyable day, we’re already planning our outfits for next year. The RM team had a real Pretty Woman moment pushing the divots into the ground on the grassy pitch with their high heels, without any sprained ankles or shoes eaten by the Earth. Winning. I would like to welcome to the team our new Fashion & Beauty Editor, Hayley Baldwin, and new Features Editor, Ivana Sidey. We know that you’ll make fantastic additions to the team, so welcome on board! September’s issue is one to look out for, showcasing a completely revamped magazine, so make sure you grab your copy. Enjoy!

My most recent purchase was a pair of sunglasses for my little girl, as she was jealous that her big brother had a pair and she didn’t. I did tell her that it was because she kept losing hers. We’ll see how long they last.

Think glittery cosmetics are just for the Christmas party season? Think again. Here’s how to turn the trend from festive to festival. When it comes to sparkling make up looks, all that glitters is definitely not gold. Less is definitely more so focus on one area, keep the rest of your make up and colour combinations simple, and you’ll look more summer princess than drag queen. >

EYES

PRODUCT

S

From Dior’s SS13 catwalk to festival fields, bold eyes are blazing this summer. If you’re giving your lids a full sweep of sparkle, keep shades tonal. Alternatively, a simple dot in the corner, or line under the lower lashes will be chic enough if you’re daunted by a full lid. Coloured glitter eyeliners are a slicker way to liven up your lids, and there is no better time to try out this trend than at a festival.

Stila Shimmer Luminizer, £16.00

This all over skin-enhancing luminiser is designed to add a touch of shimmer, give a radiant glow and diminish imperfections.

They’re quicker and less messy to apply than shadows, and can be stashed in your bag for touch ups.

LIPS

Sparkly lip shades are a bolder alternative to shiny lipsticks and glosses. They’re generally deep plum and cherry shades for the party season, so opt for low-maintenance, lighter shades like pinks and corals to keep it on trend. Plus, when you’re in the thick of the crowd, touching up your lippy is so un-festival.

CHEEKS When it comes to your cheeks, forget glitter and think shimmer. Highlighters will give your cheekbones a seductive sheen and subtly illuminate skin for a sun-kissed glow.

NAILS

A twinkly mani is the easiest way to wear glitter. There are so many options, such as painting on a bold sparkling shade, drawing on dazzling lines, or simply painting a shimmering top coat onto individual fingers.

Top Tips!

1. Barry M Glitter Nail Paint, £2.99

Barry M’s sparkly strawberry shade will complement any festival outfit, and will be ready to rock come Christmas too.

Stila Sparkle Liquid Eye Liner, £14.00

The rich pigmented formula in this waterproof liquid liner will make sure your glitter-lined lids stay perfect come rain or shine.

Always use stiff brushes to apply glitter and sparkly cosmetics; fluffy brushes will flick and spread it everywhere.

2.

Use primers beforehand to hold it in place.

3.

Dust powder underneath your lips or eyes, depending on where you’re applying glitter. This will catch any that falls and can be swept off with a brush.

M.A.C Glitter, £16.50

M.A.C’s glitter can be applied directly to the skin or combined with other products to add a touch of sparkle.

************************

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer, £15

Apply before your eye shadow for creaseless colour that stays put.

Disgusting Ingredients You Didn’t Know You Were Wearing Would you slather on an aging oil, or massage chicken bone marrow into your cheeks? You could be already... How often do you check the calories on a pack of biscuits, or the fat content in margarine? Probably a fair few times, right? But how often do you check the ingredients on your beauty products? Like food, it’s something we’re packing our body with, but it’s likely the answer is never. All it takes is a glance at the long list of complex chemicals, and we brush off any qualms and heap on the product. 12 | rmmagazine.co.uk

In June, Alannah Weston, Selfridges, un-clogged the store’s shelves of any products containing squalene oil, a substance extracted from sharks liver. She was backing model and animal rights activist Lily Cole’s campaign to get rid of the product. Squalene is just one nasty ingredient seeping onto your skin during your daily beauty regime. The good news is that there are several rich plant sources of squalene, but this isn’t always the case. Here are some other nasty ingredients to avoid.

beauty

Mineral Oil

Ambergris

Best selling products Vaseline and Baby Oil are guilty culprits of mineral oil, with the latter made entirely from the stuff. This oil provides zero nutrients unlike other moisturisers and simply seals off the skin, which negatively impacts the skin’s function. This can aggravate acne and cause skin to age prematurely. Suddenly skin doesn’t feel so baby soft. The oil’s cheap price is more appealing to manufacturers than helping customers maintain moisturised, healthy skin, as it’s simply for a smooth gliding action. Beware of any products that contain petrolatum or paraffinum, as this is mineral oil in disguise.

Scientists call it ‘floating gold’, we call it whale poo. This is a solid, waxy, flammable substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales and used as a base in many perfumes. It has a sweet, musky smell and is highly valuable; earlier this year a dog walker found a large lump washed up on a beach worth £50,000. We won’t look at Thierry Mugler’s Alien in the same way again.

Glucosamine Glucosamine is a common supplement found in health stores to help repair damaged bones, but it’s also hiding in your products as an antiinflammatory agent for staying power. But here’s the gross part: it’s a natural component of human cartilage, and acetyl glucosamine comes from the outer shells of shellfish. If you’re allergic to sea creatures, have asthma, or don’t want to rub traces of bone on your face, we advise you steer clear of this one.

Oxybenzone Before you slap on anything containing SPF, this summer, check it for Oxybenzone. This ingredient has been linked to allergies, eczema, hormone disruption and cell damage, plus it’s a penetration enhancer, a chemical that helps other chemicals penetrate the skin. According to Femme Toxic, it is “restricted for use in Japan, while in the EU, products containing more than 0.5% oxybenzone must be labelled: “Contains Oxybenzone”.

SHOCKING!

Dimethicone/ Cyclomethicone You probably don’t know what these ingredients are, but we bet you know what silicone is. Well, they’re pretty much the same thing. These ingredients are found in many hair care products on the shelves to help smooth frizz. They coat the hair with a fine layer to seal out humidity, but this layer builds up after time and before long your roots will contain more silicone than the cast of TOWIE. This build-up is hard to remove and can lead to problems like hair loss and a dry itchy scalp.

Carmine If you pick up a cherry red lipstick, or a seductive scarlet nail varnish, it’s likely to contain carmine. Carmine is made from dried, crushed Cochineal beetles, and produces a bright red colour, widely used in cosmetics. But don’t think that once you’ve cleared out your carmine cosmetics you’re safe, as it’s also hiding in some yogurts, drinks and sweets. Juicy reds suddenly seem a bit too succulent.

GOOD TO KNOW If you’re keen to clean your regime of any toxic products, try some natural, organic and vegan brands, such as;

It has been estimated that one in eight beauty ingredients are hazardous, bringing the total up to an ugly 10,500. Many are linked to cancer, cause damage to the environment and endanger animals, yet loopholes in the law - such as fragrance companies not having to list the ingredients on their perfumes due to copyright - allow them on the shelves.

As much as animal print is never off trend, sometimes it bubbles along under the radar for a few seasons before resurfacing, and we are all glad to say that it’s well and truly back on the high street with a few new twists! There are the Kaleidoscope-style patterns, reflecting animal prints to create new geometric effects. Some leopard spots are mixed with zebra or snake skin prints for a more urban mix and match effect, while others are combined with tropical flowers for the girly girls out there! Leopard prints on a subtle red base are becoming quite timeless and we adore Miss Guided’s long sleeve crop top- this will be perfect throughout Autumn too with a high waisted skirt and tights while aqua bases are great for buy now, wear now clothes such as bikinis and kaftans. We have chosen the best of the bunch for you so grab your bag, head to the shops and go wild! 14 | rmmagazine.co.uk

‘What about him?’ asks my friend as another man passes by. “Too short,” I quickly reply. “Him?” she suggests as another guy falls under my scrutiny. “Look what he’s wearing!” I gasp, to which I always get told: “You’re too fussy!” Maybe I am, but I’m not the only one. A recent nationwide survey found that women think height is the most important physical attribute of a man - sorry guys, but it looks like size does matter - followed by grooming and fashion sense. relationships And don’t think you’re safe from this rejection if you’re not signed up to such websites. Last December, Parship.co.uk reported that 77% of British singletons have turned down a date because of something they found out about the potential beau through social media, which can feed our fussy nature. “If a person finds someone that has a couple of attributes that are not quite right, they will just move onto the next one,” says Kingshott. “There’s so much choice now, you can meet people from all over the world.”

While some would argue that social media profiles are an efficient way of .. finding out who is ‘undateable’, Up. e th Taylor believes otherwise. “It’s really On damaging because you’re reading ed stuff and seeing a picture build up n r e tu e of about someone that could not v a h n aus ns be true,” she says. “You let your eto s bec und o l g in te fo imagination run wild. But who can blame us for thinking that an ever-so-charming, utterly beautiful man will fall dramatically in love with us when we’re always bombarded with gushing songs and brain washing rom-coms? They not only want us to believe that our perfect Prince Charming will soon come along, but that we need a Prince Charming to have a happy ending. However, this fairytale image is disappearing fast amongst women, and we’re no longer moping around in our pyjamas singing ‘All By Myself’ when things go wrong. “I hate this idea that all women want is a boyfriend and that’s all it’s about. I want a boyfriend, yes, but for the right reasons, not for the sake of it,” says Taylor. Amen sister.

In our dreams... right?!

No one knows where technology will take dating in the future, or what the effects of this ‘hook-up generation’ will be, but one thing is certain: I may be single, but I’m definitely not alone.

Want to stop being a fussy female? “Give someone a go!” says Alison

If someone asks you out and you’re not a hundred per cent sure, give them a try. There are so many elements to a person; you can’t expect to know everything about them from a glance or social media account. You wouldn’t want someone to judge you immediately, would you? See it as an adventure. You might make a new friend, or find a new type of cuisine you love. It will make you more interesting and you’ll attract the right sort of person - I really believe that if you put out the right energy it will come back to you. Who wants to go out with the person who’s closed off and always says no? Say yes a bit and see what’s out there. The Still Single Papers is out now.

“Compromise!” says Louise

In a relationship there needs to be an element of compromise, especially if you’re dating and dating and never finding anyone you like. There are a lot of female commitment phoebes out there, so consider whether you’re actually ready to commit themselves. Many single women I know are aiming too high, and I don’t just mean with looks, they want the whole perfect package. They need to be more realistic. A guy can grow on you through their personality, so if you don’t get those initial butterflies, give them three or four dates.

katie

price

A model, author, singer, TV star, mum and business woman – It seems Katie Price is a hard woman to label, and even harder to pin down. But amongst her busy schedule she managed to find time to chat exclusively to Ivana Sidey; who went to find out just what Katie was doing next...

I don’t care what anyone says, I do what I want to do because it isn’t harming anyone. And I don’t need to respond, I believe that actions speak louder than words and the best revenge is success.

26 | rmmagazine.co.uk

exclusive interview

We shouldn’t be having an interview with Katie Price; taking time out to discuss the launch of yet another successful new venture. After all, she’s the bolshie, big haired, opinionated ex-glamour model who shot to fame with a little help from Page 3, no? And that was almost 20 years ago, shouldn’t she have hung up her stilettos by now? Well, apparently not, and today you will find her even busier than ever. So how did Katie get the price so right? Well, when Katrina Amy Alexandria Alexis Price, or Katie Price to you and me, an 18 year old girl from Brighton, appeared on Page 3 in The Sun, little did she know that it would transform her life. The legendary section of the ‘Red Top’ newspaper certainly turned out to be a real asset to her career, and transform ‘Jordan’s’ own 32FF assets into a household name. But 49 books, four fragrances, countless fly-on-thewall TV documentary’s, a successful equestrian range, plus the proud holder of several awards including Woman of the year, it seems that our Katie is more than just your average model.

“I am truly proud of all of the things that I have done - I wouldn’t do it otherwise, so I always put in 100% effort, which means I haven’t got any regrets, because every decision I have made, has made me the person that I am today.” And the newly married person that she is today has been involved right from the beginning with her latest fragrance, Kissable, by being there throughout the whole process, insisting she had a whole new dark haired look for the launch on National Kissing Day on July 6th. Has the Pricey got a soft, romantic side? “Oh don’t be silly, I’m far too independent for that! I launched my new fragrance for purely

selfish reasons, ha ha! I have designed one that I would want to wear all the time, because I am always buying perfumes. I really love it. Plus if you buy a big bottle you get a free lipgloss.” Independent, yes. Insecure, maybe. When I complimented Katie on how beautiful she looked on her new perfume box, she just laughed – “thanks to a bit of airbrushing! I admit that I face a bit of criticism, but I don’t give a s***! I don’t care what anyone says, I do what I want to do because it isn’t harming anyone. And I don’t need to respond, I believe that actions speak louder than words and the best revenge is success.” So it’s safe to say that her infamous outspoken manner isn’t going anywhere, and in turn her numerous business ventures are only moving forward. Really, you can’t help but admire Katie. When she is not working insanely long hours, she is, of course, working hard being a mum, which will remain her greatest success. “I do work hard, but I always make time for my children. As soon as I am home I am in mum mode, which is my favourite thing to do – I don’t have a nanny at the weekends either because I just love being around them.” Family is clearly a real inspiration and her latest book to her ever growing franchise, He’s The One, is about love and relationships between your first love and the love between a mother and daughter. But you won’t find Katie curling up with a romantic novel, “I am into all the serial killer stuff. I would hate to sit and watch a romantic film, I would rather watch a f***** up movie.” Speaking of books, there is another autobiography out later this year, despite Katie expecting her fourth baby. “People always say why are you working, and why are you so busy while you’re pregnant? But the thing is, these things were booked last year, and I didn’t know that I was going to be pregnant, but you have to just get on with it.”

And it sounds like she is showing no signs of slowing down either, moving her popular reality TV shows onto YouTube. “It is so much quicker and get to show people things that they might not have seen before, like how I do my make-up. I mean Jamie Oliver has done it as well and he is doing really well, but I’m not comparing myself to Jamie Oliver!” It’s a bit late to be modest now, because you really cannot deny her success. So how has she done it?

“Well I have been very lucky but I am just a determined person. If I want to do something I make it happen. You need to make your own luck. The fact that I am just a normal girl from nowhere who has grafted and got where I’ve got.” So what is next for Katie Price? Well she tells me that after her perfume launch has finished she is heading straight to Australia and LA for her handbags, shoes and TV. Then when she gets back, both her wedding dress range and the eagerly awaited autobiography will be out –providing the truth behind THAT twitter spat between her, Kelly Brook and Danny Cipriani. After all, Katie has always been a strong and self-assured woman, and I for one wouldn’t want to mess with the Pricey!

Kissable fragrance – Available now (RRP £19.99) He’s The One novel – Available now in Hardback (RRP £16.99) To find out where Katie is signing copies of He’s The One, visit: www.katieprice.co.uk/hes-the-one-tour for updates.

I couldn’t stick to one genre of music, as my musical influences are so varied (from Stevie Wonder to Jay-Z) it’s only then did I truly start to embrace my musical sound.

Your cover of Mr Carter has some deep lyrics, do you ever find it hard to express emotions when writing lyrics, or does it come naturally? Mr Carter was a song about that feeling or opportunity everyone dreams about as a young kid and beyond: that ‘lucky break’ moment that you read about but think it only truly happens in the movies. I wanted to run with that idea and give it a context that just so happened to be my life at that point in time. This is actually one of the most honest tracks I’ve written which is why I think it got a good response, people could relate to it. Deep down I was hoping that Jay-Z would somehow stumble upon the track and call my phone like the last line in the song. Who knows?

What do you believe to be your greatest achievement so far, and if you could change anything, would you? My greatest achievement would have to be the team of people that I have around me. I can’t say the awards or record sales ‘cause I’m not quite there yet, but with the people that inspire me and motivate me, it makes the struggle and the journey worth it. I wouldn’t really change anything, but would have followed my gut a bit more in the early stages of my writing, I feel like there’s a lot of songs I would have written had I not worried about the reaction they may have received.

What advice would you give to any young aspiring singer or songwriter? Just do it! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and to grow, as fear is the only thing that can stop Do you ever suffer from writers block and if you. Life is a journey not a destination, so write so, how do you get past it? about whatever you’re feeling at the time, and I’m reading a book at the moment called ‘the enjoy it. Don’t follow trends, start trends, and if it power of now’ which is helping me with so many feels right then go for it! issues I find with chasing a music career. I can’t speak for everyone, but I feel like most people don’t suffer from writers block but suffer with fear of failure. So many artists risk everything on ‘making it’ in the music industry, and the journey can be so daunting and the fear of failure so To follow El Shay and his success: heavy that the pressure actually blocks people from doing what they enjoy. YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/elshayofficial In your opinion, who do you believe to be the best new singers/songwriters on the Twitter: London music scene? https://twitter.com/Elshaymusic Not to be biased, but I think Livvy Nicole is going to do wonders next year. She’s an artist that just enjoys what she’s doing, and you can hear in her music that writing just comes so natural to her. She’s exactly what I think the UK pop scene is missing right now. Another one to watch out for is a rapper called Rikki Ryan. You won’t have heard much of him as he’s keeping his cards close to his chest, but he’s working on his album and, take my word for it, this guy is the reason I would re-write my raps, just so they would sound half as good as his. He’s a genius when it’s comes to wordplay and is bringing a real fresh feel to the music scene.

Meet Joni! I am now officially sponsored by Gibson Guitars, and I have finally named my SJ100 Acoustic. Joni, after the beautiful songstress Joni Mitchell! There has been lots of live filming and photoshoots with my lovely new guitar over the last month, I think she may be my musical soul mate! This picture was taken in the Gibson Showroom in central London.

Gigs My band and I played to a packed out venue in Camden, where I played many new songs which will be on the second album. We had a lot of fun on stage and the crowd was really up for a party, singing along to everything and getting involved with the new tunes! The next morning we headed to Oxford for the Cornbury Festival. Some amazing bands and artists were on the bill such as Van Morrison, Lawson, Keane, Amy Macdonald and many

more. I was lucky enough to receive complimentary tickets for my friends and I for the whole weekend... so it turned into a messy one haha

Fashion Show

The One My next single is a duet with Alistair Griffin and is out later this month! I am excited about this one, so keep your eyes peeled :-) Fikay Eco Fashion Essex-based recycled fasion company, Fikay Eco Fashion are providing me with a new softcase for my Gibson Guitar! It will be made 100% out of recycled materials, they tell me every time one of their products is purchased, educational resources are donated to children in Asia.

I had the pleasure of being a guest of honour at a fashion show last month! In partnership with The Body Shop and Teenage Cancer Trust, the young designers at Milton Keynes College all had to design pieces with the theme ‘Beauty With Heart’ (which is both the Body Shop slogan and also the name of my charity single for TCT) . I had to pick a winner from each year and model the winning outfit on the catwalk (luckily I did not trip up! ha!) I loved this outfit by Ellee Carter so much, I wore it to my London show the following week!

club review

If you want a premier night out, then why would you ever look further than Kosho? RM were treated to a VIP table with no expense spared. What other bar can guarantee that sort of good night? It’s no secret that RM love a good time, and it’s really no secret that RM also love a good night out. But when you’re hitting your home turf, it sometimes feels like you haven’t gone out at all. Kosho is different which is why it is a favourite of TOWIE stars like James Lock and Chloe Sims, and if you’re really lucky you might even spot a singer or footballer! Yes it was a mere taxi ride away, and when we walked in (and stumbled out) we were surprised by the feel of the place, and if you have ever been there you will have to agree. For those of you that haven’t, you’ll find it on Romford high street, standing out with its stylish West End style, even before you walk through the doors.

34 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Now in only its second year, it was clear that these guys knew what they were doing, showing us to our VIP booth, big enough for the whole team and enough Grey Goose to keep us all happy too! Not to mention our waitress who kept us all topped up before the night really got started. The music was what you would expect for somewhere so close to London, but without the hefty price tag – only the most recent commercial dance music played to make us get out of our seats and hit the dance floor just before they hit capacity. But there was still room for the resident DJ, and bongo player to add the kind of atmosphere you can only ever get from live music. As self-proclaimed Kosho novices, we truly didn’t know what to expect, but the true measure of a good night out is a bad head – check! And looking over the photos and videos on our phones, it’s certain that we had a lot of fun. You’ll have to check it out yourself though, our pictures won’t make it online!

The expensive clink of crystal champagne glasses, the stomping of thoroughbred ponies and clatter of Louboutins were the soundtrack of the 13th and 14th July. Finally the Duke of Essex Polo had arrived, and it certainly was the event of the social season. Over one particularly hot weekend in July, Polo truly earned its nickname as the ‘Sport of Kings.’ The annual Duke of Essex Polo Grand Prix had finally made its welcome return, but not without a few changes. For the first time in it’s eight year history, the tournament was hosted in the stunning Hylands Park Estate, Chelmsford. The reason? Well anyone who has attended in previous years will have to admit that the event has just grown and grown. Indeed, a spokeswoman agreed, saying: “We just outgrew Gaynes Park Estate in Epping. We needed to make sure that the guests were happy. We listened to people’s comments over the years and felt that it was time to move on. We have to agree, the impressive 574 acres of British countryside, not to mention the home of the grade II listed Hylands House, expertly proved that this venue is so much more than just the site for the gigantic V Festival, and it is a place that can be enjoyed by much more than just A-list musicians. The polo is now also fully sanctioned by the Hurlingham Polo Association - the governing body for polo in the UK, Ireland and also a few of the 46 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Commonwealth countries. As a guest, all you had to do was look around the event to see its credibility – an international standard polo arena, some of the world’s finest players and world class entertainment. It’s no wonder so many Royals adore this event! Fans of the sport were treated to a whole weekend of excitement, another first for this year. And despite all of the speculation about the changes, the event truly did live up to the hype. On Saturday we were treated to thrilling top level polo which kicking off at 12 midday sharp, courtesy of the very first match of the weekend. The LEA polo team, owned by private jet specialists London Executive Aviation, played against the Kingg’s team, while later on that day, the second match saw Interlagos v Bentley. But as we all know, the modern day spectacle of polo is as much about the social occasion as it is about the sport itself, and what a day it was. Event organiser, Tracy Zetter explained: “Polo is an exciting event and at The Duke of Essex Polo Grand Prix 13, our aim is to deliver an exciting, family friendly weekend, which will be talked about for many months after.” For the first time ever, VIP guests, which included us, were able to drive up to the door in our chauffeur driven stretch Limousines. Connoisseurs of the event will know that this is in stark contrast to last year when ladies had to use shoe covers to stop their beloved Louboutins getting spoilt. This was just as well, as it was a whole weekend on your feet to see all of the entertainment available for everyone to enjoy, ranging from families right up to the celebrity VIPs such as Bianca Gascoigne. And the celebrity names didn’t stop there. TOWIE favourite and Bella Sorella boutique shop owner, Lydia Bright, 22, designed an exclusive range of polo shirts for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s

Charity’s Face Value appeal. The money raised will fund pioneering research into craniofacial conditions to develop life-changing equipment and help countless children each year. Lydia said: “I have been going to the Duke of Essex Polo event for years so I was thrilled to be asked to design an exclusive range for the event.”

simulators, Mad Hatters Tea Party, shopping village, arts and crafts, and access to all the rides and games on offer. The Gourmet Food Village offered a Champagne and Oyster Garden. There was also the Viking Village, Show Jumping Challenge and you could hang out with the Heart Angels from Heart FM.

The event organisers were thrilled by her added glamour too, with a spokesman saying; “Lydia is the perfect choice to design an exclusive range for the Duke of Essex Polo. We’re delighted to have her on board.”

And while polo has never been known as an affordable sport, this year’s Duke of Essex Polo Grand Prix had a variety of tickets, ranging from the £20pp family ticket to the £8,000 Black Grand Prix Package, where a whole new world of luxury was unveiled in beautiful marquees, a five star menu and a cocktail bar complete with champagne or even Pimms – A perfect accessory for the sun!

The feel good factor didn’t end there, with a Grand and Silent auction for the incredibly deserving charity, Great Ormond Street. The Duke wanted to raise money for pioneering child health research, such as intravenous pumps. There was incredible sought after prizes such as a helicopter into the Glastonbury Festival next year, and two tickets for the World Cup final in Brazil next year – but there was also incredible generosity shown too. Thousands of pounds were raised, supporting the amazing charity and really changing young people’s lives. But for those guests who actually wanted to spend some time out in the scorching heat, there was still plenty to do. Fresh from Britain’s Got Talent, the junior dance group sensation, Youth Creation wowed fans with their energetic routines and contagious energy. Or if you prefer your music a little more classic then you a few just some of her greatest hits like ‘Set me free’ and ‘Round and Around.’ For the younger polo fans there was the ‘Dinky Derby’ and the Essex Dog Display Team entertained the 8,000 strong crowd. Fans of thrills were entertained by the event’s main sponsor, Lookers, showcasing the new Range Rover Sport and inviting guests to ride the Land Rover Experience mini Terrapod. There was even formula 1

But it was only once the polo finished, divots trodden and ponies safely put away, the real party began in the VIP Paddock Night Club. With top DJs such as Justin Wilkes from Kiss FM, all held exclusively for Black, Gold, Silver and Dusk guests, we were treated to a wonderful night out through the state of the art sound and lighting, making it a highlight of the whole event. The Duke of Essex Grand Prix 13 was undoubtedly ‘the Sport of Kings’ and one the hottest events of this summer. Roll on next year! An extra special thank you to the team at Fox Tailoring for our beautiful bespoke tailored suits and to James Read Opticians for our super chic Ray Ban sunglasses!

When considering an idyllic beach break, most people tend to look further afield than their own home turf. Ivana Sidey discovers that all is now about to change thanks to easyJet’s new route from London Southend to Newquay Cornwall; making white beaches, Michelin star restaurants, and one of the nation’s favourite seaside destinations closer than you would think. If you’re asked to think of Rivera beaches, golden sand, sharks, surfing and a vibrant nightlife – you would be excused for thinking of a few more exotic destinations than right here in good old blighty! But the fact is Cornwall has achieved international recognition, and has been awarded World Heritage Site Status to several of it’s mining areas – giving it the same iconic level of cultural significance as say, Venice or the Great Wall of China. Mix together the Eden Project with its sub-tropical climate, miles of unrivalled coastline alongside acres of beautiful, untouched countryside, and you have the perfect holiday destination – Cornwall really does have it all! So much so that couples, families, friends, and even their pets continue to return, year upon year.

But you will have to make a few tough decisions, when you finally pick out what you do want to do, because I promise that if you go, you really will be spoilt for choice. Simply take your pick from the intimidating breathtaking beauty of the cliffs, or perhaps lose yourself in the gentle and leafy South coast, where you can meander through the sleepy fishing villages. But with so much to pack in, we opted to start our holiday the second our plane touched down. Now if you want to explore Cornwall, then you need to explore it in a typical laidback Cornish style. The Cornwall Camper Company are a VW Camper Hire Company providing beautifully restored and finely tuned VW

campervans for fantastic holidays. You will learn that good service is not just about waving you off as you drive down the road – it’s about the finer details, and we definitely had a wonderful journey. In fact, RM were lucky enough to be picked up from the airport in one of the vans – which is a standard service they provide. The first impression of the company is their real sense of fun. The vans have girl’s names and it is clear that they were restored with love, as one of them was named after the owner’s first born daughter! Which brings us nicely to an introduction to the wonderful Jess Ratty. Her enthusiasm and passion is truly contagious, I have never been made to feel more welcome. > 49

Both Jess and her husband Ben epitomise the Cornish lifestyle, laidback and full of passion, if you’re lucky enough to go to Cornwall then make sure you arrive in style, or spend your entire holiday in one of the perfectly presented vans. During our visit, we stayed at the Headland Hotel. You know you’re guaranteed a magical holiday when you stay in a hotel that is rumoured to be haunted by Second World War nurses, after the hotel was requisitioned and became an RAF hospital. But fear not, because this hasn’t put off any royal guests, ranging from Queen Alexandra and recently HRH Prince Charles. Behind postcard views of Fistral Beach, the dramatic grade II listed hotel continues to welcome guests into a relaxed home from home, complete with roaring fires, comfy seating, and panoramic views. The Headland’s 40 one, two and three bedroom 5-star selfcatering cottages are also utterly unique. Here guests can enjoy the space and freedom of their own contemporary cottage by the sea with the added benefits afforded by a luxury hotel with it’s own spa, Cornish salt steam room and Swedish sauna. Alternatively, for those looking for fun on the beach and an authentic Newquay holiday, then you must visit the on-site surf school, Surfing is Therapy. The school is run by Ben Ridding, who has over 10 years’ experience, so whatever your level, you’re guaranteed to have fun. Beyond accommodation, everything else on a holiday is dependent upon your own 50 | rmmagazine.co.uk

personality, but we wanted a real taste of Cornwall, so we had to explore the Eden Project. And it really does offer so much more than just a memorable day out. As well as creating stunning gardens, Eden also is the host for a huge number of fantastic music events – such as the Eden Sessions, which will see musicians like The XX, Kaiser Chiefs and Jessie J performing live. But if you really want to get the adrenaline pumping, why not take a flight on the longest zip wire in England where you could reach speeds of up to 60mph! Or if you have a head for heights but want a more relaxed journey, why not take a walk on the Ariel Walkway, and look over Eden in all of its glory – not bad for a south-facing greenhouse. Why not make the most of the coast and find your sea legs on board Newquay Sea Safari and Fishing, which offers the Seal Cove Safari Trip, where you are taken out on a 10m Blyth Catamaran in search of seals. Or if you fancy something a little more energetic you could always spend a bit more time with the pair and learn how to dive, under their other business, Atlantic Diving and take advantage of their 29 years’ experience. For culture, look no further than the iconic Tate Gallery, the modern art gallery in the quaint town of St Ives stands out and draws you in. Smaller than the sister gallery in London, the Cornish one offers a variety of exhibitions, and up until September, you will be treated to the Summer 2013 exhibition.

We particularly enjoyed the Barbra Hepworth museum, perfectly preserved in her own home in Cornwall, so you get a real and rare glimpse into the actual artist – in this case, one of the most significant British artists of the twentieth century. After all that excitement, you are going to want to taste what Cornish living is like too. And being so close to the coast, you are probably already aware that Cornwall is a bit of a foodie paradise. But one definitely worth trying is Rick Stein’s Seafood restaurant in Padstow, which takes the local produce very seriously, printing a new menu daily, dependent upon what they catch out at sea. The imaginative cooking, ranging from a twist on the French classic, lobster thermidor, to the roast turbot with hollandaise sauce – cooked in a wonderfully simple English way makes this a real gem. For food with a view, you must try the Lewinnick Lodge, as you dine out staring over the deep blue Atlantic, or if you’re craving some character then the Rum and Crab Shack is the one for you. So while the sun is shining, why not go out and make the most of it? Why not lie in the hot rays, eat a Cornish ice cream and really explore the great outdoors! True, there is a whole world out there, but let’s not forget that we are called Great Britain for a reason.

Head turning from every angle, it’s hard to comprehend that the Swift range by Suzuki has only been going since late 2010 as it is now such an iconic car. If you have ever owned one you’ll agree that this range really does put the fun back into driving. How? Well, for starters just look at it. It leads and doesn’t follow, making strong style statements wherever it goes. The colours are bold and fearless, not forgetting the superior driving performance, handling and low fuel consumption, that all make driving so much fun you might not want to actually get out! But that was three years ago, and like anything that leads the crowd, a few tweaks here and there can only help you when you want to stay ahead. And who wouldn’t say no to a little cosmetic surgery nowadays to keep them looking fresh? Luckily for the Suzuki, the styling refreshment was nothing more than a Swift wardrobe change.

Now, the sporty little number can be picked up in a number of fun colour options, ranging from the metallic selection of Cool White Pearl, Silky Silver, Galactic Grey, Cosmic Black Pearl, and Boost Blue. Alongside the solid colours; Right Red and Superior White. Suzuki also welcomes the introduction of two extra models as part of the model update. They are the 4x4 Five door 1.2-litre and the Five door 1.6-litre Sport - both offered with manual transmission only. But all models have received some minor styling refreshments including a new design front bumper and grille and silver detailing to the lower front bumper and for added safety and style, a new LED type high level brake lamp has been added too. As for the interior, the design now has a much more dynamic feel, with new design seat fabric featuring black as its keynote colour with lined accents of blue and grey. The revised model is now set in three clearly defined grades; SZ2, SZ3 and SZ4. As standard equipment and in addition to seven airbags and ESP, SZ2 has front passenger airbag deactivation facility, electric front windows, remote central door locking with deadlocks, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, MP3 / WMA compatible CD tuner with USB port and

steering wheel mounted audio controls. Plus new design 15-inch wheel covers are now included! The SZ3 model adds air conditioning, to ensure that you’ll be kept looking cool this summer too. In addition it has Bluetooth connectivity, integrated audio unit with music streaming facility, and a new design for the 16 inch alloy wheels. And good news - this model is now equipped with front fog lamps as standard for when the summer fun does end. Their advert states ‘Have to have it’ and in the RM office, we have to agree.

SLR Investment Consultants Limited was founded by Lesley Reeves in 2009 and became a limited company in April 2011. We are a team of 6 consultants with over 35 years’ experience in financial services and building property portfolios between us.

We share ways of investing that can help you increase income and achieve capital growth through cash or pensions.

in any portfolio. Our aim is to show our clients how to build their portfolios in an affordable, stable and understandable way.

People who have benefited most from our services are those looking to grow the cash they have in the bank, receive income to support a salary or pension, and those who have given up all hope that their pension plans will provide them with sufficient income to support the lifestyle they want in retirement.

From experience we are aware that, due to changes brought about by the Financial Conduct Authority (previously known as the Financial Services Authority) over the last few years, people with pension funds under £100,000 and/or limited capital are finding it difficult to get advice from banks or financial advisers without it being costly and eating into their already depleting funds.

SLR work with clients with a broad range of available assets. Cash investments suit budgets of £5,000 upwards, with variable terms to suit your needs. Pension investments are tailored to a minimum total pension pot of £20,000. Reflecting our own personal investing experiences we source providers whose products are asset backed by property or land. From talking to clients we’ve found that, like us, almost everyone can relate to the growth and income opportunities associated with property and understand the huge value land can have. Property and land are tangible and solid and if held long enough will always be a valuable asset
