the venue We’re keeping it simple this year - there are only three places you need to know to get the most out of conference. Our team will also be on hand all weekend, so just look out for anyone wearing a SPANC17 blue t-shirt if you get lost. The IBIS Budget Hotel 2 The Gateway North, Crown Point Road, Leeds, LS9 8BZ If you’ve booked accommodation through us, you’ll be staying in a twin room in the IBIS Budget Hotel. We’ll be holding a conference registration point there on Friday from 4 to 6pm, but you’ll still be able to check-in to your room outside these times if your travel plans don’t match up exactly. The IBIS reception desk will already have your name, and our team will be on hand in case of any problems. If you don’t have time to check-in before conference or need somewhere to store luggage after checking out, we’ll have a locked luggage room at Leeds University Union. Leeds University Union 2 Lifton Place, Leeds, LS2 9JS There’s no getting away from Leeds University Union - this is where we’ll be holding every session at conference and the awards dinner. We’ll also have a conference registration here on Friday evening, as well as Saturday and Sunday morning. As soon as you make it onto Leeds University campus you should be able to find us easily enough - as well as being the blue t-shirt gang, we’ll also be plastering the place with signs. The Palace Kirkgate, Leeds, LS2 7DJ Arriving on Friday? This is where all the fun starts! We’ll be holding our evening social in The Palace, a short walk away from the IBIS Budget Hotel. Don’t worry if you’re not booked in at the IBIS - if you’re coming for conference you’re welcome! Food will also be available for purchasing at The Palace if you’re a bit peckish too.

The likes of Daily Mail Editor Paul Dacre, Observer Food Critic Jay Rayner, ex Guardian Deputy National Editor Polly Curtis and BBC Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell have passed through their office doors, and their latest editors have gone on to write for The Mirror, The Times and The Evening Standard. Jessica Murray, Host Officer of #SPANC17 and Editor of The Gryphon Jessica is the full time Editor-in-Chief of Leeds’ official student newspaper, The Gryphon, after graduating with a degree in English Literature last year. AGM and elections schedule
Every year SPA members elect five Executive Officers to run the organisation. This happens at the Annual General Meeting – held on Sunday. They’re responsible for growing and developing the association, as well as being generally awesome. You don’t need to have been involved in the SPA in any way prior to running, you just need to be passionate about helping student journalists. If this sounds like you, put your name forward and help build the next generation of journalists in the UK and Republic of Ireland. There’s a short handover period to provide you with full training and support, and our current Officers and Trustees are more than happy to give advice. For more information check out the constitution on our website - which we promise is more fun than it sounds. Here are some of the roles you can run for:
CHAIR The Chair is the figurehead of the SPA, looking after its reputation, and is the main contact for external organisations. It is the most time-consuming and and requires dedication, a passion for student media, and a determination to see all student publications succeed. Responsibilities include: • Being the public face and spokesperson for the SPA • Overseeing and supporting the other officers • Organising and chairing committee meetings • Overseeing any SPA campaigns • Being responsible for the SPA’s financial affairs
MEMBERSHIP AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER Our members are our most important asset, and it’s the Membership and Communication Officer’s job to make sure we’re serving them. Responsibilities include: • Maintaining communications with SPA members • Organising a monthly newsletter outlining the activities of the SPA, it’s executive officers, upcoming events and campaigns • Recruiting new member publications to the SPA • Processing membership applications • Maintaining the public list of member publications • Recording and making publicly available the minutes of all Executive Committee meetings
DEVELOPMENT OFFICER The Development Officer looks after the future of our members. Always innovating, they help to keep members trained and up-to date with relevant laws and industry standards, as well as the SPA’s objectives. The Development Officer works closely with the Chair. Responsibilities include: • Developing the SPA so that it better meets its aims • Offering support, advice, and training to members • Recruiting, training and overseeing Regional Officers • Updating and maintaining the SPA constitution • Overseeing the governance of the SPA
DIGITAL MEDIA OFFICER Almost everything we do takes place online as our members are so spread out! It’s the Digital Media Officer’s job to make sure we’re doing the best job we can to be accessible, help, and generally digitally savvy. Responsibilities include: • Managing the SPA’s web and social media presence • Ensuring the SPA website is kept up to date • Providing technical support for members
MARKETING AND EVENTS OFFICER The Marketing and Events Officer is the reason you know what we’re up too! Across all our campaigns and coverage, they are also the lead officer for producing our national conference. Responsibilities include: • Organising and overseeing all events, including venue and speaker booking, attendee registration, and ticket sales • Organising and overseeing the SPA’s annual National Conference, including submissions, judging and prizes for the awards • Managing event sponsorship and budgets with the Chair • Supporting members in sponsorship and advertising • Securing sponsorship and advertising for the SPA • Raising the profile of the SPA through public relations
And that’s not all - as well our elected committee the SPA appoints regional officers across the UK and Republic of Ireland. We also recruit for alumni, admin, and online officers. If this sounds like you watch out for application announcements shortly after conference.
The Media Society is delighted to supporting the next generation of student journalists at #SPANC17 by sponsoring the Best Newcomer Award. As well as working with the SPA throughout the year, we put on a range of events and networking for young people, and run several competitions, bursaries and scholarships. Find out how to join us at www.themediasociety.com
Social at spanc Last year we gave away bottles of wine to the people who tweeted the most at #SPANC16. Thought that would get your interest… Twitter: @spajournalism Tweets mean prizes! We’ll be tweeting all weekend from our @spajournalism account. If you give us a cheeky follow, and send some quality tweets using the #SPANC17 hashtag, we’ll be giving away some stellar prizes throughout the weekend. Tweet pictures of yourself at the awards ceremony, interesting lines from speakers, or just photos of your cat - they’re all welcome. Snapchat: @spajournalism Boast about your #SPANC17 successes to your friends on Snapchat - with our very own conference fancy filter! We’ll be compiling all the best moments from this weekend on our story. The best Snapchatter will also win a prize. Aren’t we generous.
Facebook: /groups/studentpublications /studentpublicationassociation
Our Facebook group is one of our most important assets - it’s a place where we can communicate with members, and where members communicate with each other. We post job adverts, competitions, talks, important announcements, and lots more. Many of our members also use it as a forum to ask for advice from fellow publications on censorship, printing costs, and contacts - among other things. It is a hugely valuable resource and we strongly suggest you join if you haven’t already. We also have a Facebook page, and Facebook groups for each region, where our Regional Officers are your first point of contact. Events or jobs specific to your locality are posted in these. Just check the description of the main group for all their details.
Any Questions? If you’re lost around the building, simply tweet our hosts @TheGryphon and they should be able to help guide you to your destination. If you need some information or help at any point during the conference, the fastest way is to ask a #SPANC17 organiser wearing a dashing light blue t-shirt - or tweet at us @spaournalism

what the spa can do for you? As a not-for-profit organisation, we’re constantly striving to make the SPA as useful as it can be for student journalists. Here are just some of the ways we can help you… Online support - wherever you are With more than 160 publication members and almost a thousand people on our Facebook group, we’re the biggest online network of student journalists we’ve come across so far. And we’re only going to continue growing. That’s a whole lot of people to connect and share your work with, and the possibilities for collaboration are endless! Not only that, but we’ll always help you find opportunities the best opportunities first, from post grad schemess and paid work to workshops and wine, we’ve got you covered. We exist in the real world too As well as having a huge Twitter and Facebook community, we run regional conferences across the UK and Republic of Ireland. We not only showcased the best of journalism in those areas, but we’ve given a variety of student papers the chance to network, swap ideas and get to know one another. We’re great believers that student journalism can only become stronger with collaboration, and we can’t wait to see what else you come up with after #SPANC17. Need a bit of a publicity boost? Sometimes, stuck in your university bubble, great articles don’t get all the attention they deserve. And the SPA is here to change that. From our Flash Friday posts to our SPA Papers featuring your front pages, we highlight the best of your work so it gets the publicity – and web hits – it should. We also celebrate the very best of student journalism through national awards, as well as other initiatives throughout the year. If that’s not something to put in pride of place on your journalistic CV, then nothing else is. We will back you Being a student journalist can be tough at times. We, as well as our hundreds of student members, can support you if you need backing for a worthy campaign – giving you vocal support when you need it most. We’ve had a strong track record of getting national coverage when papers’ are being hard done by, and will also speak out on national issues like threats to FOIs. Advice aplenty from our team Everyone has times they need a bit of advice - and as people who’ve only recently been in your shoes, we’re here to help. Our executive and regional team are on hand almost 24/7 to help out when we’re need. And if we can’t help? Easy, we’ll refer you to professionals who can, for example who could help you legally, when you need it.
PA TRAINING
“I cannot recommend the PA course enough. The quality of teaching was some of the best I’ve ever had. Whilst it was very intensive, I think that atmosphere really helped prepare me for the heated and busy world of the newsroom. Additionally, the PA course has an immense focus on employability and getting a job, which is ultimately the reason you go on one of these courses. Without the teaching, without the experience, and without PA’s connections, I would not have had a chance of finding a job as a journalist.” Fraser Whieldon, Reporter Herts Advertiser @PA_Training 0207 963 7920 www.becomeajoiurnalist.co.uk E: training@pressassociation.com
