Mehta, Senior
THOUGH MEHLI MEHTA is known today chiefly as the father of Zubin Mehta, he is in his own right a distinguished musician, with a more than thirty-year career as violinist, conductor and music teacher. In 1935 he founded the Bombay Symphony Orchestra and was for several years its conductor. He was also first violinist of the Bombay Chamber Music Society and the guiding spirit of the Bombay String Quartet. At present Mehta, Senior, is head of the Orchestra Department of the University of California at Los Angeles, where he conducts the university's symphony orchestra and teaches violin and chamber music. In off-duty hours, he leads four other orchestras in and around Los Angeles, works on music scores, practises on the violin and gives music lessons. Now fifty-eight, Mehta shows no signs of slowing down his gruelling pace. "The Mehtas never retire," he says, "my father didn't retire until he was ninety-three. I don't think I could ever retire, nor could Zubin. There's too much to do really."
