Spring fever Grab your flip-flops

The magazine by and for the people who call Lake Norman home 2009 APEX Award Winner for Publication Excellence Lake Norman CURRENTS is a monthly publication available through direct-mail home delivery to the most affluent Lake Norman residents. It also is available at area Harris Teeter and Lowes supermarkets, as well as various Chambers of Commerce, real estate offices and specialty businesses.

arch 20 was a big day at our house. No, it wasn’t my birthday or anniversary. I didn’t win the lottery or get a promotion. And the Tar Heels surely did not win the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament (or any tournament for that matter). March 20 was a momentous occasion because it marked the first day of spring. As warm weather fans, my husband and I treat the first day of spring with the reverence most folks reserve for Christmas. As soon as the temperature hits 60 degrees, I reach for a floral skirt and flip-flops, and my husband reaches for his shorts. If it’s a weekend day, you can bet we’re going to find our way to a boat. This spring is extra special because this past winter was extra brutal. Don’t get me wrong, I like to watch the snow fall just as much as the next person, but I don’t care for the overcast days that go with it, and we surely had our share of those this past winter. I have relatives in the Washington, D.C., area who won’t even get near a snow cone because of the winter they had. So when March 20 rolled around and I saw my neighbor’s daffodils blooming, I was psyched. We all know that spring is a time of renewal, but I think it’s much more than that.

and get into the spirit of the season

Give Carolinians a sunny day, and everyone’s demeanor darts to the high end of the happy scale. Somehow even if you’re having a bad day, the sunshine delivers a positive perspective that helps you deal with things in a better way. Why do you think tax day is on April 15? Whether you’re dusting off your gardening tools, scrubbing your patio furniture or polishing your pontoon, spring chores contain an element of fun that shoveling snow simply doesn’t offer. Maybe it’s more exciting because we know we’re preparing for good times, big and small. When the weather becomes warmer, walking to the mailbox is more of a treat because my hydrangeas are blooming. Dining with friends is even better because we can cook out with the fireflies, and nothing beats watching the sun set over the lake from a boat on a spring night. Needless to say, I get a case of spring fever every year. Lucky for me the cure is as simple as smelling the honeysuckles as I take an evening stroll. Have fun finding your own personal remedy.

Seat Chic Sabrina Hicks’ stylish Chair Aprons keep furniture nice and tidy

Lake Norman Currents | April 2010

Davidson resident Sabrina Hicks was putting towels over her upholstered dining room chairs to protect against spills and other messes from her children when she realized something had to give. Hicks, who often sews dresses for her daughter, decided to find some other solution for protecting her chairs during mealtimes. A prototype for The Chair Apron soon followed. “I have a strong desire to make things around me,” says Hicks, who wanted the chair covers to have a custom fit. The Chair Apron is removable and washable and easily ties around the back of a chair. Available in various colorful patterns, the aprons are made from durable laminated cotton, so wiping with a damp sponge takes care of most messes. Each apron is polyvinyl chloride-, lead- and formaldehyde-free, and retails for $28. Until recently, Hicks produced each apron from her home, but recently, she struck a deal to subcontract manufacturing of the aprons from Catawba Creations in Hildebran. She then ships the aprons from her home when she receives orders. Hicks primarily targets moms, and in October, she will take her product to the ABC Baby Expo in Las Vegas, the main trade show for the juvenile products industry. “I have a long-term goal of providing solution-based products to parents,” says Hicks. Having a stylish and functional product just makes things better.” — by Renee Roberson Photography by Craig Reynolds The Scoop Sabrina Hicks’ solution to food spills: The Chair Apron.

Music to Its Listeners’ Ears

Broadcasting for 51 years, WHIP-AM gives the audience what it wants to hear WHIP-AM radio station is an interesting piece of Mooresville history that is still thriving. It has been broadcasting in the Lake Norman area since Wayne Nelson started the station way back in 1949. And it has not budged: It is located in the original white stucco building, and even has some of the old transmitters in place, complete with vacuum tubes and large analogue dials. That it has survived in this era of highwattage corporate radio stations is a testament to its business model of broadcasting oldies music, news, and local high school and college sports. It mainly comes down to customer service. “We serve our area better than the station trying to cover a wider range,” says Norman Tindal, a radio host at WHIP. “We serve the community.” WHIP is now owned by Glen Hamrick (since 1976) who runs the operation, and serves as a broadcaster for religious programming on Sundays. His wife, Martha, and son, Harrill, pitch in at the station as well. Gary Trexler is sports director and a sportscaster covering high school, college and American Legion sports. High School football. The games are reported on site with a portable broadcasting unit that sends its signal via cell phone back to the radio station, which relays the program over the airwaves. WHIP also owns a van that is used for remote programming events such as the Mooresville and Denver Christmas parades, the Iredell County Independence Day Parade and the Loch Norman Highland Games. Old 45 records used decades ago still line the walls of the studio, as do the tape cartridges used in the 1970s and ’80s, giving the studio a nostalgic feel. Computer hard drives have long since taken over broadcasting duties for the station’s oldies programming that comprises the decades of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. “Beach music” is another favorite at WHIP, with sev-

Porches & Yards is heading to a site next to the Fresh Market Great news for fans of Cornelius retailer Porches & Yards: By early June, Gregg and Monica Setzer’s business is expected to open in a new location. Porches & Yards, which debuted locally in May 2005, is leaving its spot in Jetton Village for a location beside The Fresh Market in Cornelius on Torrence Chapel Road. Construction is currently under way.

“We’re growing,” says store co-owner Gregg Setzer. The new store will be double the size of the current location, so shoppers can expect to see much more of Porches & Yards’ product line. The company’s Web site, www.porchesandyards. com, lists such brands as Lloyd/Flanders, Lane Venture, Tropitone, Uwharrie Chair and Windham Castings. “We will be showing many more out-

door furniture collections,” Gregg says. “We also are focusing on outdoor living accessories and décor. We will be more than just outdoor furniture. It will be outdoor furniture and accessories for the home and garden.” In business since 1996, Porches & Yards and its products have been featured in various publications over the years. eral time slots allotted each week to this local North and South Carolina genre of music based on rhythm and blues, jazz and doowop, among other styles of music. As a result of community support, WHIP does not subscribe to the Arbitron radio rating service in order to determine listenership. “A lot of the Charlotte radio stations live and die by those ratings, but we don’t,” says Trexler. “With the feedback we get, we know they are listening — they are there.” — Story and photography by Trent Pitts

SunningHill Jill Baking cook up a winning endeavor Once you meet Jill Dahan you will want to become part of her world. Her smile is contagious and her energy is engaging. She wants to conquer the baking world one healthy cookie at a time. Enter stage left Patty Howe, entrepreneur and a tenacious pit bull that could soften a stone. Put these two ingredients together and you have Sunninghill Jill Baking Co. Dahan, a stickler for healthy snacks for her three boys, was always experimenting in the kitchen. After many trials the birth of “Jill’s Lil Hills” was born. The cookie concoction is a melt-in-your-mouth mélange of almonds, almond butter, very little sugar, flour and chocolate chips. High-quality organic ingredients are a priority for the company. Also high on the list is

Locally you can find their products at the Fresh Market and Papaya Papers in Cornelius. Currently, their cookies are also showcased at Crisp Restaurant on Seventh Avenue in Charlotte. Howe says that on tasting days, customers are thrilled to see them replen-

ishing the empty cookie bins. The energy that surrounds the mini-baking empire is infectious. You just want to capture a part of it. Howe is the scrupulous business partner with tunnel vision. Dahan, with her whirling-dervish style of creativity in the kitchen, mesmerizes you. No cookbooks are involved in most of Dahan’s collection of recipes that swirl in her head. Dahan says, “Cooking and creating is like therapy for me.” The Dahans went on vacation earlier this year and Dahan did not cook for a week. Her eldest son, Antoine, says on the evening of coming back from overseas, “My mom made the best Thai food meal we ever tasted.” Dahan claims pent-up energy and being away from the kitchen “helps release all these ideas and food combinations.” — By Kathleen McMahon Photography by Craig Reynolds The Scoop SunningHill Jill Baking Co. 704.962.0151 www.sunninghilljill.com Cookie Flavors – Almond, Sunflower, Cashew, Dark Chocolate, Wild Blueberry

Southern Tree and Landscape in Charlotte and did some freelance landscaping work. Recently, he shared how bringing the indoors out not only gives homeowners more space to entertain but also adds value to their home.

Q. Why are outdoor rooms so popular? What makes a “room?” More and more people are staying at home, and they are looking for more space for entertaining. The first thing I ask when I begin talking with people is, “What’s your objective? Or, what’s your vision?” The next thing is where it will be located — near the house or farther out into the garden with a path leading to it? Some people start with an existing patio, and some want it in a grassy area. … An arbor with climbing vines or a pergola can provide shade. An outdoor room can be just a seating area, or it can include a full kitchen. It also can include a kids’ play area or a pool or a fireplace.

Fire pits and fireplaces are among the current outdoor trends.

Q. What are the big draws these days? Water is still a popular element because of the soothing sound — trickling water appeals to the senses. Not everyone can afford a waterfall (and ponds are not that popular any more), but container fountains and bubbling urns provide that splashing sound. A lot of people want fire pits and fireplaces, too.

Q. How much does it cost to create an outdoor room? From a budget standpoint, a lot of people look at this kind of project over the long term, with a long-range master plan. They may not be able to do everything they want all at one time, and I try to build these things into the overall plan.

The most important thing you wear doesn’t hang in your closet. A healthy smile can change the way you look and feel - and it can make you want to share it with those around you. Q. Can homeowners find what they need a t Lake Norman Gardens?

Budgets can go from a few thousand dollars to $100,000 and up — what can be done is almost unlimited. A quality outdoor furniture set can cost $2,500. A patio with a fire pit can run $5,000, a brick fireplace might start at $7,500 and an outdoor kitchen can cost upward of $20,000. Things like irrigation and lighting also add costs. Most people create their outdoor room in stages and add elements over a couple of years.

Of course we have all the plants for containers and landscape beds. We have a complete display of hardscaping, including pavers and stacked stone. We’re also carrying a brand new line of outdoor furniture, with fabrics that are resistant to mildew from rain and fading from the harsh sun. And the retail store offers a lot of the accesso-

Largest Antique & Designer Mall in the South! “Water is still a popular element (of designs for outdoor spaces ),” says Keith Stallings.

ries people want to dress up their outdoor room, including rugs.

Q. Can homeowners recoup the cost when they sell their homes?

Come out and spend the day!

Recently, I heard an economist from Texas A&M talk about the difference between adding a room or doing renovations as compared to landscaping. He said a well-planned landscape is one of the best investments a homeowner can make, and he has the data to prove landscaping adds more to the value of a house than, say, adding a bathroom. LNC

op-quality cabinetry, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and cultured stone make 2407 Simonton Road in Statesville an address to envy. But the adults and children for whom it was built aren’t people of privilege. The 6,400-square-foot facility is the new home of Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center. The nonprofit organization opens its doors each week to children who are the victims of sexual abuse. It is a safe and child-friendly place, where the staff provides compassionate intervention services to child victims and their non-offending family members and a multidisciplinary team begins the process of investigating and prosecuting the children’s offenders.

Donations From the Heart Until last November, Dove House had been leasing a much smaller 100-year-old Victorian home in downtown Statesville. Plans for building a new center had begun in 2007, led by Jack Grossman, board of directors member and fundraising chair. No one could have envisioned the final result that stands on Simonton Road today. It’s a $1.7 million showplace inside and out, but Executive Director Brenda Deal calls the organization’s new home “a miracle” for another reason. “We have this beautiful place, and our expenses are less than they were a year ago,” she says. “We only have 7 percent of the total cost — less than $150,000 — to pay off. Our deepest desire is to have the debt paid off by the end of the year.” Spivey Construction Co., with luxury custom home and commercial divisions in Mooresville, donated all of its general contracting and construction services to build the new Dove House.

Be selective when choosing your next pair of sunglasses

fter a long winter, warm weather is finally moving in, and if you’re like most Lake Norman residents, it’s time to take inventory of what spring gear you need to update. While you’re dusting off last year’s flipflops, don’t forget to take stock of an item that many people overlook — protective eyewear. We talked to Dr. Royce Syracuse, an ophthalmologist with Horizon Eye Care Associates in Cornelius, to help determine the difference between UVA and UVB rays and how you can affordably protect your eyes from their damage. Dr. Royce Syracuse

Long-Term Effects of the Sun on the Eyes Syracuse believes sun damage to the eyes has a cumulative effect and happens over a number of years. Consistently failing to protect your eyes from the sun at any time of the year can, over time, lead to macular degeneration (loss of function in the retina) and leave the skin around the eyes vulnerable to different types of cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma. Another long-term effect of sun damage to the eyes is a condition called pterygium, where a non-cancerous growth that is opaque or yellowish in color grows over the cornea.

UVA/UVB Rays UV radiation is part of the electromagnetic light spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. UVA rays have shorter wavelengths than UVB rays, but they penetrate deeper into the eye and can pass through the cornea and reach the lens and retina inside the eye, says Syracuse. They are also thought to play a role in macular degeneration, which results in the loss of function in the retina. UVB rays have longer wavelengths than UVA rays but are more dangerous, as they are absorbed by the cornea and lens in the front of the eye. UVB rays are usually responsible for photokeratitis, also known as “snow blindness,” which Continued on page 30

5 Tips for Purchasing Sunglasses

Continued from page 28

is best described as a sunburn on the surface of the eye. It can cause sudden and temporary loss of vision and pain but heals after a few days upon receiving treatment.

Get your children into the habit of wearing protective sunglasses at a young age. The lenses in children’s eyes are clearer, allowing more damaging UV rays to pass into the eyes. Check for 99 percent to 100 percent UVA/ UVB protection, especially when purchasing for children. Find frames that fit you comfortably so you have more motivation to wear them outdoors and while driving. If you participate in activities such as golfing or do a lot of yard work, also consider shatterproof lenses or wraparound frames, as they provide extra protection against objects getting into the eyes. Remember, you don’t have to spend a tremendous amount of money to get a quality pair of sunglasses.

The Lowdown on Lenses While there are some contact lenses on the market that provide UV absorption, Syracuse doesn’t believe they provide the same level of protection of sunglasses because they don’t pro-

tect the skin around the eyes or part of the eyes not covered by the lenses. Also, glasses that are advertised as “polarized” only cut down on the

Dr. Royce Syracuse confers with one of his patients.

glare from the sun and don’t necessarily contain UV protection. And the statement “The darker the glasses, the better the protection” is actually a myth. Syracuse says dark glasses without any ultraviolet filters can be more damaging to the eyes because they dilate the pupil more, therefore exposing the eye to more damaging rays. You can find stylish sunglasses in a variety of prices at established sporting good stores, professional optical offices and department stores. Look for 99 percent to 100 percent filters, usually labeled on the glasses, against UVA/UVB rays. Having a licensed, trained professional on-site who can help you select the best protection for your eyes is a plus. he sheer white curtains covering the front picture windows at Caruso’s had me thinking about the scene from The Wizard of Oz when the wizard was discovered behind the green curtain. Admittedly an interesting association, nonetheless, I did wonder what I would discover behind these coverings. Much to my delight, I discovered that this Oz is a cozy restaurant serving upscale Italian cuisine. And the wizard? Pasquale Caruso, the owner/chef. Open since the end of August in the Brawley School Shopping Center in Mooresville, Caruso’s has quickly gained a loyal following primarily through word of mouth. “When I came here and opened a restaurant, I try to be affordable and try to not copy other people,” says Caruso in a thick Italian accent. “We try for quality, price, ambience and service.” Caruso, who is joined in the business by his stepson, Erbey Godino Caruso, takes pride in using the freshest quality ingredients and avoids using a freezer. The limited menu reflects this. Instead of being lined with traditional Italian dishes such as hearty meat lasagna or rich fettucine alfredo, it features made-to-order veal, chicken and seafood dishes that are prepared with various complementary sauces. As stellar as the menu might be, the nightly specials tend to draw the most attention from diners, and Caruso takes great pains to make sure those items are exciting. “People tend to order the specials because it’s the new items,” Caruso explains. The sheer curtains covering the windows give the restaurant an elegant feel as does the frosted glass etched with “Caruso’s” that shields the dining room from view. Muted burnt orange paint covers the walls of both dining areas and serves as the background for colorful artwork encased in ornate frames. Leaf-patterned carpeting and brass fixtures casting dim light also add a classical touch to the space. Continued on page 34

A Meal Worth the Wait On a recent Saturday evening we made the mistake of arriving without a reservation. There wasn’t an open table to be found among the welldressed couples and groups of couples enjoying their meals. If we didn’t mind a 25-minute wait, the pleasant hostess informed us, we could be accommodated. We were shown to the six-chair bar and introduced to the bartender, who was attentive as we passed the time that actually stretched to 60 minutes. Once seated, our drink orders were taken and a basket of homemade bread accompanied by an olive oil-and-balsamic vinaigrette dipping sauce were delivered. We began our dining journey with an order for Crespelle Ligure. The two thin and lightly crisp crepes enveloping tender lobster and crab meats in a brandy sauce were inventive and exceptionally pleasing. Our friendly and well-mannered waitress offered the night’s tantalizing specials, which included chicken in a puff pastry and sea bass, but

we opted to order from the menu because it held similarly tempting selections. The Salmone Bella Vista, that my husband ordered, earned an enthusiastic “bravissimo!” The Italian herb-marinated salmon fillet, topped with jumbo lump crab meat and baked in a lemon and white wine sauce, set a high bar and will forever be the dish to which all other salmon dishes are compared. A simple baked chicken breast became the base for something extraordinary in Pollo Involtini. Two small bundles of the white meat, stuffed with ham and asiago and fontina cheeses, received a wonderful boost of smoky flavor from bacon enwrapping them. Both entrees were served with creamy mashed potatoes and sautéed julienne mixed vegetables. Entrees are appropriately sized, making the decision to order dessert a little easier. The hardest part will be making a selection from a nicely varied list that include sweets ranging from chocolate to cheesecake to tiramisu. Such Great Taste

The Blue Ridge Wine & Food Festival is a local treasure

A

Lake Norman Currents | April 2010

nytime there’s a wine and food festival, sign me up for a number of reasons. First, all the participating winemakers and restaurateurs bring along their best feet and proceed to put them forward. What a great way to try things out. Second, and closer to my heart, the single best way to find out about wine and to enjoy it to its peak is to spend one-on-one time with individual winemakers. You get to understand a winemaker’s philosophy and to find out what part of his or her soul goes into the wine and how it gets there. How much better is that than relying on “scores” that self-appointed wine experts place on wines? Wine scores really do bug me. Placing a quantitative

40

score with numbing precision on something as totally qualitative as how a wine tastes smacks, to me, of outright quackery. Add to that the fact that, upon the slimmest of analysis, these scores have a statistical rigidity that’s right up there with the Titanic’s unsinkability. Take these scores with a whole boatload of salt. So, imagine my elation when I found out that Lake Norman CURRENTS magazine is going to be one of the sponsors of the Blue Ridge Wine & Food Festival, which takes place April 15-18 in Blowing Rock. Hit me with a happy stick, I’ll be there with wine glass firmly in hand. Many of North Carolina’s winemakers will be there strutting their stuff and comparing their wines with some stars from other parts of the United States and from around the world. For me, it’s also a chance to link up with old friends, both people and wines, and to meet some new ones.

N.C. Wines: A Force to Be Reckoned With If you haven’t tried some of our local wines, you really should. And what better way than when they’re all clustered together in one place. North Carolina wines are good and getting better all the time. They’re much more than an interesting curiosity. Here are a couple of factoids to ponder. North Carolina ranks as the No. 10 state in the country when it comes to wine production. We’re as high as No. 5 in terms of wine and culinary tourism. According to a snapshot taken of the industry by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, in 2005 wine contributed more than $800,000 to North Carolina’s economy. And, one more thing. Last July, prior to a G-8 summit, President Barack Obama presented a Continued on page 42

gift of American wines to the Italian president, Giorgio Napolitano. Included in the package was a bottle of Vermentino from Raffaldini Vineyards — just a little way up I-77 from the lake. Considering that there are so many Italian-style wines in the United States to choose from, the choice of a North Carolina wine is a final vindication that our wines need to be taken seriously. I’ve taken local The festival offers plenty of wines to Europe for tastings and they’ve all met opportunities to wine and dine.

with acclaim. I’m convinced that Napolitano enjoyed sipping on his wine gift. Just for the record, Vermentino grapes produce a nice dry white wine that has loads of body and character. Give one a try. A Feast in the Mountains The Blue Ridge Wine & Food Festival is more than just a chance to nosh and sip — not that there’s anything wrong with that. The festival includes a cook-off, the “Fire on the Rock” Chef Challenge, between some of the area’s most well-known chefs. There are wine seminars, something near and dear to my heart. And there’s a best-of-the-best dinner, where Childress Vineyards’ winemaker Mark Friszolowski and local restaurateurs will team together to create food and wine pairings designed to compose a symphony of taste sensations. This dinner is something I’m really looking forward to. And all of this takes place in the beauty of springtime in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Be still my heart. For my wife and I, living on Lake Norman is a delight, all by itself, each and every day. But the delight is amplified by the wine region right on our doorstep, and in just a couple of hours we can be in the mountains. A bundle of pleasures. This event in Blowing Rock kind of ties them all together. If you can get up there, stop by Lake Norman CURRENTS’ booth and look me up. Who knows, we might find an excuse to sip a glass of wine or two. Enjoy. LNC The Scoop The Blue Ridge Wine & Food Festival is April 15-18 in Blowing Rock. Events include seminars and classes, winemakers’ dinners, a meet and greet, an art competition and live musical performances. Chad Kirkby, left, Kent Fuller and Bobby Nesbitt are the trio behind the Carolinas Pro Golf Tour.

K

Started With Passion Kent Fuller founded the CPGT in Lincolnton as a way to stay involved in sports management as he transitioned toward retirement. “I retired from merchandising in the NASCAR circuit in 2003 and I didn’t want to just sit,” Kent Fuller explains. “I had put on a few golf tournaments for the merchandising side of NASCAR and a friend from Texas knew I had the experience to make it work. He suggested I start a mini-tour and I made it happen.” Bobby Nesbitt, a retiree who spent 38 years working for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Alabama before relocating to Huntersville, joined Fuller as a co-owner one year later. He says the love of the game fuels their efforts. “We

Filling a Need Kent Fuller says that while many mini-tours fail within their first two years, the CPGT has grown because it fills a unique need in the golfing community. “We are like a steppingstone for the players who want to advance to the higher echelon of golf and we are a good proving ground for players who want to learn how to mentally compete and play for money,” he says. Bobby Nesbitt adds, “We keep this going because our players believe that we are necessary to the sport. Only a few states like North Carolina and Florida have mini-tours with local and regional focuses and that’s where we fit. We are called the Carolinas Pro Golf Tour for a reason. We branch out into both North and South Carolina, but our base is within 100 miles of Charlotte and we want to stay that way.” While golfers travel from as far away as New York and Florida, most come from the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia. Kent Fuller believes there are three basic classifications of players on mini-tours like the CPGT. “For most of these guys, it is clear that golfing is their job and it’s in their blood. You have the players with the heart, but not the skill, right alongside the ones who are borderline and are learning how to compete for money. Then Continued on page 48

ent Fuller, Bobby Nesbitt and Chad Kirkby believe in the values of the game of golf. They understand how the sport tests athletes and builds character. And they also believe that hard work and a low score on the course deserve a bit of prize money. As the trio behind the scenes of the Carolinas Pro Golf Tour, Fuller, Nesbitt and Kirkby operate what they describe as one of the most personable and successful professional golf mini-tours in the Piedmont. The two- and three-day tournaments, held on courses primarily around Charlotte, are open to amateur and professional golfers, from aspiring juniors and recent college graduates to established seniors with PGA credentials.

do this because we love it and want to give back as much as we can,” Nesbitt offers. “We don’t so much treat this as a business as we do a passion. We want to make sure these guys have a place to play and can make some money at the same time. Watching the kids grow up as golfers is a delight.” Chad Kirkby is the newest addition to the organizational team. He spearheads the tour’s marketing efforts and is dually charged with growing the sponsorship base. Kirkby explains, “I came out to watch the guys play and from the moment I saw Kent and Bobby on the tee box shaking hands and greeting the players I was blown away and wanted to be a part of it. What makes this tour different is the attitude and personal connection that Kent and Bobby bring to it. You don’t see that passion in too many places these days.”

you have the group on top that can win any given week.” Winning any given week means earning a professional paycheck and taking home prize money. Since its inception, the CPGT has paid more than $750,000 in total prize money. Bobby Nesbitt says the tour awarded more than $200,000 in 2009 and, as the new season begins, the prospects of larger prize purses in 2010 will

put their total awards at more than $1 million in six years. With nearly 180 total players competing in over 15 annual events, it is one of the largest mini-tours in the Piedmont. Twenty-five to 50 players compete in each event. Matt Cannon, a teaching professional at The Golf Studio at NorthStone Country Club in Huntersville, is a regular competitor on the CPGT. “The Carolinas Pro Golf Tour is a great place for golfers of all stages. Renovations transform couple’s house into a contemporary, Craftsman-style home.

eople have been slowing down at the intersection of Church and McCall streets in downtown Cornelius to see what’s happening at the house on the corner. As the façade changed from white to tan, and the carport was replaced with an attached garage, a neighborhood cornerstone for more than 50 years was transformed into a contemporary, Craftsman-style home.

S.K. McCall, owner of the McCall Chair Factory on Catawba Street, and his wife, Jesse, built the original house in 1949. A road was built to connect their house — the first on the block — to Catawba Avenue, where the family business was located. Fifty-one years later, the McCalls’ daughter, Joy Dean, and her husband, Joe, have renovated the old house into a modern, energy-efficient residence where they plan to retire. The physical renovation process began in June 2009. “The biggest limiting thing was we wanted to keep the old walls,” says Joe. “So we had to design around the porch, walls and old kitchen.” With the help of Stephan Turley, president of U.S. Home Designs Inc., and Tim Whelan, owner of T. Whelan Homes Inc.,

Joy’s childhood residence is double its original size, and remains on its original footprint and foundation. Turley’s design connects the living room, dining room, kitchen and front bedroom of the old house with a master suite, walk-in pantry, guest bedroom, full bath, two-car garage, above-garage bonus room and lots of closet storage, something the old house lacked. The Deans also considered the needs of seniors in the new design, including 36-inch doorways and hallways that are 48 inches wide, making them wheelchair accessible. “It’s the job of the designer to figure out what people want and try to give it to them,” says Turley. “Part of the key (to the final design) is to refine the plans. The more time spent changing the plans the less time spent changing things in the field.” Continued on page 54

Six things to consider before remodeling A remodeling project of any size can make a big difference in a family’s quality of life and the resale value of a house. Renovations can be stressful, but the result almost always outweighs the inconveniences. Tim Whelan, award-winning builder and owner of T. Whelan Homes Inc., suggests homeowners consider the following before beginning a home remodeling project. Make a list of everything you want remodeled in your home. Then prioritize the list. “A lot of times we’ll go to a client’s home only to be inundated with ‘wants,’ and no real sense of what are priorities or what is realistic for the budget,” says Whelan. “Prioritizing before building begins helps both of us to focus.” Set your budget. A budget range helps the builder keep plans within the scope of financial realities. Consider the timeline and alternate living arrangements. To minimize stress on the family and pets, it might be a good

idea to schedule the bulk of the work while you are on vacation or when you can stay somewhere else. If portions of a house will be exposed to the outdoors, spring or summer are the best seasons for remodeling, says Whelan. Think about the division of labor. Are there things in the remodeling project you’d like to do yourself? Be honest with yourself about your capabilities and what is best handled by the builder. Check contractor references, licenses and insurance. “Get a comprehensive quote and contract, and look thoroughly through the specification sheet and contract making sure all budgets and allowances are realistic and obtainable” says Whelan. Other things to ask yourself when selecting a contractor: Will you be anxious if this person is in your home while your children watch TV in the next room? Do you like the contractor’s demeanor and sense of design style? “Go with your gut and don’t settle until you’ve found a remodeler you feel comfortable with,” says Whelan.

Eco-Friendly, Energy-Efficient Place to Live Tim Whelan and his crew built the house to be eco-friendly and energy efficient by incorporating a sealed crawl space, a hybrid dual-fuel system to heat and cool the house, solar tubes, a whole-house dehumidifier and air filtration system, and a tankless water heater. The kitchen appliances, selected by the Deans, are Energy Star-certified. New hardwoods that mimic the original flooring were milled by a company in the Appalachian Mountains that practices sustainable tree farming on its own land, and custom cabinetry in the kitchen and laundry room were built by a local cabinet company. The front yard was graded, and many of the original plants were uprooted, saved and replanted, including a bank of flowering bulbs and daylilies that were Jessie’s.

The Deans and Whelan worked together under a cost-plus agreement. A cost-plus building plan differs from a fixed-contract bid by allowing for flexibility in the cost of different areas of the building process. Arden Drose, director of purchasing and estimating for T. Whelan Inc., called numerous suppliers and subcontractors to find the desired products at the best price, enabling the Deans to make energy-efficient upgrades and ultimately coming in under their budget. Joy is glad to return to the neighborhood and live near many of the families she knew as a child. The couple plans to decorate the front bedroom with items from the McCall Chair Factory and refer to the room as the McCall room. “It took a long time to decide what we wanted: picking, choosing and putting together,” says Joy. “This was the house my parents built — the only house they built, the only house they owned and the only house they lived in — so it means a lot to have renovated and live there again.” LNC

rom a distance, the sight of the flower both delights and confuses. Seemingly one part buttercup and two parts yucca, long pointed leaves spike from the heart of the plant and then light yellow petals top the stalks in perfectly cupped symmetry. What kind of flower is that, a passerby might wonder. Until she gets closer, examines the stalk in her hand and then laughs at the whimsy of it. It is really just a yucca plant made bolder by the addition of Styrofoam cups from a cut-up egg carton. “I call it my eggplant. Southern Living says it is an old Southern tradition,” explains Bettie Casey, who has been putting the cups out on her yucca plant in the front yard of her Davidson home for years. “But how old can it be if it’s Styrofoam?” Both whimsical and practical, Casey’s gardens mirror her personality and lifestyle. When she and her husband moved to Davidson 30 years ago, Casey set up her gardens. While designing her layout, she let her culinary and aesthetic delights guide her. Cherries, blackberries and apples have all had a place in her gardens, but, so too, have aesthetics from her travels like a Chinese moon gate and a Japanese gate in the Oriental garden on the north side of her home. “I am a born collector, and my gardens are the same way,” says Casey whose gardens boast a green, blue and brown bottle tree, a pond brimming with goldfish and the sign from The Chef’s Cap, a French restaurant she ran in town for several years in addition to the beautiful gates.

Both whimsical and practical, Bettie Casey’s gardens mirror her personality and lifestyle.

Credit goes to Mom and Dad Across her front bank, fragrant flowers and vivid colors greet visitors while teasing the senses of schoolchildren who run by on their way to and from. Purple asters match a pair of chairs set up for conversation. Vivid, almost burgundy camellias and blueberry bushes line the sidewalk. January Jasmine releases its fragrance while schoolchildren who brush past the anise wear its scent. The backyard holds her raisedbed garden. “I like to garden in order to have good food for the table. My father had an elaborate vegetable garden, and my mother had flowers in the yard so I came by it naturally,” explains Casey. Over the years, Casey has planted a variety of fruits and vegetables from plums and apples to peanuts and squashes. She even enjoyed apricots before the squirrels realized they were edible. “I had an apricot tree because it is my favorite fruit. But the squirrels did what their mamas told them and they tried new things,” she recalls.

Star of the Show: A Hefty Kiwi Vine Today, she enjoys spinach, strawberries, figs, star fruit, various citrus fruits, peas, potatoes and even bananas. But perhaps the most remarkable plant in her care is an intricate kiwi vine she oversees from her kitchen window. Planted on a trellis 25 years ago with just a male and female vine, vines as thick as a forearm now zigzag for dozens of feet. “You have to wait four or five years before it bears fruit. The stem and the leaves are

fuzzy, too, and it has a beautiful bloom like a camellia,” says Casey, who once yielded a crop so large that she mailed a 25-pound box to her son. Though it seems an exotic addition, Casey marvels at the kiwi’s adaptability and hardiness. “I wish I had a shorter trellis to make trimming easier,” she says. “Otherwise, I don’t do a thing for it.” Casey’s approach is probably the best lesson for a gardener. Plan. Plant what you enjoy. And lose yourself in the garden. Just as passersby delight in what Casey’s garden offers them, Casey delights in what it offers her. LNC

hat started as a half-dozen artists gathering in the basement of Mooresville’s War Memorial community center has over the last 55 years grown into a vibrant nonprofit organization with more than 225 members and supporters. And continuing a tradition it started in 1978, The Mooresville Artist Guild will host the 32nd Annual Spring Artfest. The judged art competition will be held at the Depot Art Gallery April 1-May 22. “Artists from all over North Carolina enter their work,” says volunteer chairperson Alexandra Schwendener. “It’s a great event for both artists and art lovers.” The guild is located inside what used to be an old railway depot. Working with the Town of Mooresville, MAG members have transformed the space into a visual arts center complete with meeting rooms, galleries and exhibit space. The guild regularly hosts workshops, gallery crawls and other events. For the 32nd Annual Spring Artfest, artists can submit a total of three pieces. The categories include oil or acrylics, watercolor and threedimensional works. Entries must have a title and not exceed 60 inches in any dimension. Only those 18 or older can enter, and all work must be original, and not entered in any previously judged show sponsored by the Mooresville Artist Guild. G. Lee Baumgarten, executive director of the Civic and Cultural Arts Center of Pineville, will judge the show. Baumgarten has been teaching and creating art in the Charlotte area since 1988. He is an alum and former instructor of painting and drawing at The Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio. Awards for Artfest range from $500 for Best of Show to $25 for third place. There will be an opening reception April 9 from 6-8 p.m. Artists, family members and the public are all welcome. The opening reception is sponsored by the Mooresville Artist Guild and Lake Norman Realty. For additional information, go to www.magart.org. 61

Lake Norman Currents | April 2010

avidson native Rusty Knox is known around Lake Norman as a key part of Knox Realty, a company his parents started in 1973. But if all goes according to plan, he’ll be trading in his Realtor’s license for a record contract following his high-profile gig at Merlefest in Wilkesboro. “It’s my ultimate dream,” says Knox. Knox, 52, first picked up the guitar in the early ’70s. But it wasn’t until 2004, during a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser at Davidson’s Summit Coffee House, that he played before an audience. “I was scared to death,” he says. “But I eventually got over the nerves. Now you can drop me in the middle of Yankee Stadium, and as long as I can plug in and play, I love it.” Last year Knox formed a band, which regu64

larly plays gigs around Lake Norman. Knox plays guitar and writes most of the music, which he describes as country bluegrass with an edge. “It’s very unique,” he says. The folks at Merlefest certainly think so. The annual Americana music festival, which was founded in 1988, is the largest folk music festival in the country. Last year more than 130,000 people attended the four-day event. Looking to promote his band, Knox visited the festival’s booking agent in Union Grove last November, and dropped off one of his band’s CDs. He also directed him to a couple of YouTube videos of the band playing at Concert on the Green in Davidson. A few weeks later Knox was setting up for a gig when the booking agent called and extended

an invitation to play at the festival. “I was floored,” says Knox. “I played 100 miles an hour that night.” Knox says his band is going to play all four days of the festival. “It’s maximum exposure,” he says. In fact as word has spread about his upcoming gig, he’s been getting phone calls from club owners around the region asking him to play. “I’ve been putting in a lot of hours and hard work into this thing over the past five years and it’s starting to pay off. And you better believe I’m going to give them a good enough show to where I’ll be back next year.” LNC The Scoop Merlefest 2010 is April 29, 30 and May 1, 2. For details, go to www.merlefest.org.
