was lucky to live across the street from a lake (aka a large pond). As soon as spring showed any inkling of making an appearance, my friends and I would head to the neighborhood beach and swim. We’d convince ourselves that it really wasn’t that cold, even though our purple lips revealed the truth. We’d swim until we were starving for a snack, then we’d load up on Cheez Doodles and resume doing cannonballs into the water until dinnertime. There wasn’t anything fancy about our set-up. Our moms hauled fold-up chairs to the beach so that they would have a decent place to sit and read Danielle Steel novels, while making sure we didn’t get hurt. Someone might have brought a jambox so we could listen to music, but most of the time it was just us kids playing in the water, trying our best not to step on any mud or seaweed. Now that I’m a mom, I think about those days a lot, and I wonder if the kids who live in my parents’ neighborhood today have as much fun as we did at the beach growing up. It’s still there, and the dock has been replaced with a nicer one. I can only hope that video games and cell phones don’t stop those kids from splashing around with friends. Sometimes I worry that we work so hard at having fun that we don’t recognize it when it’s right in front of us. The whole

THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN LAKE FUN. As a kid, I
idea behind fun is that you shouldn’t have to work at it. You don’t have to have elaborate plans or extravagant toys to have a good time — really. Now that I’m middle-aged (I can finally say that without cringing), I realize that fun often finds you. Sure, the right conditions can help, especially if a lake or a beach are involved. But if you think about when you’ve had fun in the past, you’ll realize that it often catches you by surprise. For instance, the other day I took my children to Carolina Cones for ice cream after school. A few minutes later one of their best friends walked in with his mom and brother. We had no idea their family was going to be there, but we ended up hanging out and having a great time. In April, I went to a conference that I knew one of my college friends was attending. We both wanted to catch up but never made formal
plans. Finally one evening after dinner, we started chatting in the elevator bank of our hotel and stood there for 30 minutes talking about each other’s families and careers. It was fun. While my husband and I make a conscious effort to teach The Tater Tots (our twins) that life is not always fun, we also encourage them to create their own fun when they’re bored. One weekend on a whim we downloaded the original Star Wars from Amazon. This was a huge deal in our house, as the kids had never seen any of the Star Wars films. (I hadn’t seen Star Wars since I was 5.) We watched it, and they enjoyed it more than I could have imagined. The next day Margot asked me to put her hair in pigtails like Princess Leia, Graydon made two lightsabers out of Legos and together they looked for the Death Star from the top of their swing set. For 6-year-olds, that’s an awfully lot of fun, and the best part is that it wasn’t planned. It was something they came up with on their own, and they played Star Wars for a couple of hours — for parents, that’s an awfully lot of fun. This summer as you make plans, try to keep things simple. We’re fortunate that we live in a place where fun beckons everywhere. All you have to do is enjoy it. Happy summer!

A Stage for Stephen Stephen Mills’ vision takes the spotlight
JUNE 2016
11 LAKE NORMAN CURRENTS
Elizabeth Mills stands at Davidson's Summit Coffee, the home of a new stage named after her late husband, Stephen.
On May 27, friends and family of Stephen Mills gathered to dedicate an open-air stage behind Summit Coffee in Davidson and to honor a man who loved building a sense of community. Following Stephen’s sudden death in 2013, his wife, Elizabeth, and children, Julia and Andrew, wanted to fulfill Stephen’s vision of building a permanent covered stage behind Summit. Stephen’s family, friends and coworkers from Bernhardt Furniture raised funds to construct the stage, and many also volunteered with demolishing the old stage area. Stephen was a member of the Davidson Design Review Board and an avid music lover. He was a regular at Summit, where he enjoyed listening to live music, especially his wife’s band, Sunday Union. Elizabeth says her husband of 27 years saw great potential for this covered stage area as a way to bring people together for bands, speakers, town events and the Davidson Farmers’ Market. In addition to waterproof lighting and a metal roof, the new stage also includes a ramp for wheelchair accessibility. “We feel this area between Toast and Davidson Town Hall has just become the heart, the nesting place of our town,” says Elizabeth. “I feel the stage is not just for bands but will serve a multitude of people.” — Holly Becker, photography by Ken Noblezada

12 LAKE NORMAN CURRENTS
When Mary Zubchevich gave birth to her daughter, Skylah, a little over a year ago, the Mooresville resident and professional racecar driver noticed that there wasn’t anywhere in the area to shop for little ones. With that revelation, she opened Baby Sky Boutique in Mooresville for children 0 to 6. The boutique features a spotless white interior, complete with whitewashed hardwoods. “We carry stuff you can’t find anywhere around here,” says Manager Kim Castongia, adding that the store focuses on offering items from international designers. For instance, the Mayoral line is designed in Spain, the Sunuva swimwear line is from London, Bellybutton is from Germany and 3 Pommes is from France. In addition, the boutique carries Pediped shoes and lotions from the Noodle & Boo line. Baby Sky Boutique, 279-E Williamson Road, Mooresville, www. babyskyboutique.com. Judith Acks has opened Bloomsbury Cottage on Catawba Avenue in Old Town Cornelius. The home design boutique exclusively features Magnolia Home Furnishings by Joanna Gaines peppered with
home accessories from some of the same lines Gaines carries in her store, The Magnolia Market, and showcases on her HGTV show Fixer Upper. A resident of Cornelius, Acks has a design background and worked for many years as a manufacturer’s rep in the textile and high-end furniture industry. When she discovered that Gaines was launching a furniture line at this past fall’s furniture market, she came out of retirement to open the boutique. Bloomsbury Cottage, 21234 Catawba Avenue, Cornelius, www. bloomsburycottage.com. Shelly Rogers has opened Cotton Seed Boutique in Mooresville. The store’s two other locations are in Hickory and Taylorsville. Her shop carries the Christian Caliendo line, which is made in the United States, as well as Southern Grace, Simply Southern, bangles by Wind & Fire and jewelry by Canoe, Megan Brown and Luca + Danni. Karla Galla’s Prince experience
Six years after opening Consign on a Dime in Cornelius, Sandra Getts and Tamara Mullis have opened a second store called Showplace 28. “We were bursting at the seams at Consign on a Dime,” says Mullis. “We started looking at locations, and this fell in our laps — logistically it works out great.” The new 5,000-square-foot store is at Shops on the Green, also in Cornelius, and it mainly features new fine furniture the duo has purchased direct. “We’re really focused on good quality,” adds Mullis. Showplace 28, Shops on the Green, 20924 Torrence Chapel Road A-2, Cornelius, www.showplace28.com.
Karla Galla
As the world continues to mourn the loss of Prince, Mooresville’s Karla Galla takes solace in the fact that she attended the iconic musician’s last public performance. Galla drove to Atlanta on April 7 to see Prince perform at Fox Theatre, only to learn that both of his shows were cancelled that night because he had the flu. She was a mere 30 minutes from the theatre. Determined to cross a Prince concert off of her bucket list, she drove back to Atlanta for his April 17th show. He passed away seven days later at his home in Minneapolis. Galla has been a fan of Prince since she was a young girl and says he was a large part of her musical youth. We recently talked with her about how special it was to see him perform.
Slate Boutique has opened at LangTree Lake Norman. The ladies boutique carries on-trend clothing (think fringe shorts, crochet tops, fun summer dresses and tye-dye tanks) in addition to a vast selection of jewelry and accessories. Lake Norman’s Trusted Choice For Oral Surgery Since 1985
Almost as soon as the waters filled up the 32,000 acres of low‑lying land that would become Lake Norman in 1963, sailors and fishing enthusiasts started making plans. Duke Power, which had built the lake and the Cowan’s Ford Dam that created it, set aside 10 public access spots scattered throughout the shoreline — places where people could launch a boat or take a dip. At first, the vast lake was so uninhabited that fishers or swimmers could simply find a sturdy spot to park a few feet from shore, then pile out of the car and dive in. Entrepreneurs opened private marinas and clubs for the newcomers snapping up weekend cottages along the shoreline. At one marina near Davidson, the replica Mississippi riverboat Robert E. Lee gave dinner tours, complete with an orchestra pit and plush seating. Near Davidson, Outrigger Harbor maintained a Polynesian theme, from
grass skirts to tiki huts to a Polynesian war boat replica that sailed around the coves. Off Brawley School Road, near Mooresville, the Lake Norman Yacht Club had members even before the lake was full. A 1969 Charlotte Magazine article reported more than 500 sailboats were registered on Lake Norman. In fact, the lake gained a big enough reputation to host the Windmill National sailboat race in 1968. With long stretches of empty shore and good winds, sailors bragged of three‑hour spinnaker runs. The lake would get more crowded in the years to come, but sailing never lost its luster. More and more during the 1970s and 1980s, national sailing races and bass fishing tournaments found the lake attractive for their competitions. With such a vast lake, though, safety at times could be a concern. Storms could shift course quickly, as 104 experienced sailors found out one May afternoon in 1989. The Michelob Cup Regatta set sail

when a sudden thunderstorm ripped through the main channel of the lake, packing 75 mile‑per‑hour winds. The winds were so strong that they ripped sails to pieces. A “wall of whitecaps toppled several boats. Three sailors were killed. Just a few months later, in September 1989, Hurricane Hugo struck North Carolina. No deaths were reported around Lake Norman, but the winds did severe damage. The Lake Norman Yacht Club alone suffered $3 million in damages.

Galla got a purple manicure to celebrate going to a Prince show.
Thursday when I received 57 text messages and five phone calls while I was teaching a group exercise class. I was so scared something was wrong with one of my children. It was my friends calling and texting me to let me know that Prince had passed away. I don’t remember ending my class early, but I did. I drove home in shock only to force myself to read the headlines for myself. I didn’t understand why I felt the way that I did — why I was so sad and mourning a person I had never truly
met or spoken to. I couldn’t explain how I was feeling. But once I really thought about it, I realized that he was such a large part of my youth. I listened to his music and watched Purple Rain when I was dealing with my own troubles. His music comforted me, and I admired him for that, for his musical genius, for his raw talent, for his kindness, for his generosity to others, for his private nature, and for his boisterous stage presence. — Edited by Lori K. We sang with him, laughed with him. His personality was infectious, and I couldn’t believe how funny he was. He didn’t seem sick at all. It was a perfect night. He played just under two solid hours. What’s the best advice you have ever been given? The very thing some people love about you is the very thing some people will hate about you. What advice do you give regularly? Be yourself because nobody else can do it better than you. What is one thing or app you cannot live without? My iphone. That is how I do all my work. When you were 8 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up? A fashion editor in New York City. What book do you love to recommend? Beckie McCall’s wake-up call to put her family first set her on a new course.
my mom and getting her back to having a desire to live,” says McCall. “I took her to lunch, made lunch for her and her friends, and I got her back up on her feet.” Finally, a year after she left education, she was rested and ready for a new purpose. She thought about event planning and flower design. But then two seemingly casual things put a spotlight on what might be next for McCall. “My son said, ‘You need to Instagram what you wear every day’ and I thought that was the
dumbest thing I had ever heard. He insisted, and I started doing it. Then I hosted a Cabi [a clothing line] show for a friend,” says McCall, a life-long fashionista who can still recall what she wore on significant days like her first date with her husband. Surrounded by clothes at the party, McCall was easily able to put together outfits for others. “My husband took me to dinner and said, ‘This is what you need to do. You can change women’s lives by styling them in clothes that they feel comfortable in
and that they look good in.’ ” With that encouragement, McCall launched Paper Parasols, her personal styling business where she helps professional women who don’t have the time to go shopping. McCall brings new clothes directly to her clients, helps them sort their closets and discover new outfits, and sets up personal Pinterest boards so they know how to pair things. “Women take care of things. We make it all run,” she says. “I want to make one piece of life really comfortable and easy.” For more information regarding Paper Parasols, visit http://www.paperparasols.net or Facebook.com/paperparasols.

because her students needed her. By 2014, as the founding principal of a brand new charter academy, McCall was putting in 12- to 14-hour days six days a week to ensure that her teachers and her students had everything they needed to be successful. Then one night, still at her desk at school, McCall realized other people needed her, too. “It was 8 p.m. on a Friday night. My husband called and said, ‘Where are you?’ and I said, ‘I have to stay here and get this done.’ He said, ‘No, your family needs you now,’ ” McCall, 55, recalls of that April 2014 phone call. As she drove home that night and thought about it over the weekend, McCall knew her family didn’t just need her right then. Her mother was still recovering from the death of her husband and a fall that had left her with several broken bones. Their younger sons were navigating adolescence, and her husband was often parenting solo. “My husband is really laid back and easy going. When I got home, he said, ‘None of us can do this anymore.’ It was all about family and getting my priorities right,” explains McCall. “I don’t think I ever put my family first until then. It was always other people’s children that were my priority.” She submitted her letter of resignation, effective for the end of the school year. When summer came, she prioritized her family, especially her mother. “I dove into taking care of

ou’ve seen her or one of her sisters cruising the lake. Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to be onboard. Regardless, Brian Brady and his Yachta Yachta Yachta Charters have been part of Lake Norman since 1998. The Coast Guard Captain’s fleet includes the 100-foot A Whole Lotta “Yachta Yachta Yachta,” the 70-foot “Yachta Yachta Yachta” and the 48-foot Knot A Lotta “Yachta Yachta Yachta.” Each offers its own kind of adventure, and Brady has more than 3,200 safe charters under his belt. While it’s fun to float on the lake in luxury, there’s a lot of work behind the magic. We caught up with Brady to find out what goes into a 125-person charter on A Whole Lotta “Yachta Yachta Yachta.” Continued on page 20
Captain Brian Brady lives in Cornelius and is the owner of Yachta Yachta Yachta Charters. He has 3,200 safe charters under his belt.

9:30 a.m. Heads to Harris Teeter to buy mixers and ice for tonight’s voyage. Packs them into his convertible and continues up I-77 to Midway Marina. With a 125 guests coming tonight, he bought a bunch of stuff not knowing how much they would want to drink. He also stops at the bank for cash to use later at the ABC store so he can stock the bar. The beer distributors have already delivered the beer. 11 a.m. Stops at Wendy’s for a takeout lunch, even though he’s trying to stop eating fast food. 11:30 a.m. Arrives at Midway Marina in his convertible filled with supplies. Grabs his cart and begins loading supplies onto his vessel. He walks on and of the boat at least 20 times. 12:45 p.m. He moves the boat over to another part of the marina, where he pumps out waste, gets water for the boat and fills it full of gas. The tank holds 500 gallons. 1:30 p.m. His crew arrives. Tonight he has four crewmembers, as the number fluctuates depending on the amount of guests. Brady is quick to point out that they work harder than he does, as they detail the boat, set the chairs and prep the bar for the evening. During the charter they serve the guests, keep the floors clean and check the bathrooms every 15 minutes. They are his eyes and ears, as he focuses on keeping everyone safe. 2 p.m. Brady heads to the nearby ABC store to stock liquor for the evening.
2:30 p.m. Brady returns to do some maintenance on the boat. He puts a lock on an extra liquor cabinet, and he also installs a new GPS module. After that he scrubs the windows to make sure the boat looks perfect. 4 p.m. The coordinator for the caterer arrives and starts setting up. Brady has worked with approximately 87 caterers since he started his business. He wants his clients to have options, so they can bring their own food or caterer, or he’s happy to recommend someone. He always suggests serving smaller portions that are easily manageable. 4:45 p.m. Brady showers and dresses for the event. He likes to keep it casual. 5:30 p.m. Guests begin to arrive. Tonight they are being bused in from different meeting locations, as this is a corporate event. 6:30 p.m. A Whole Lotta “Yachta Yachta Yachta” sets sail. 6:45 p.m. Brady explores various fingers and coves to show off the lake’s beautiful homes. 8 p.m. Brady steers the boat back into the main channel so guests can enjoy the water and lake residents can have their privacy. 10 p.m. A Whole Lotta “Yachta Yachta Yachta” docks at Midway Marina, and buses deliver the guests to their homes and hotels. 10:15 p.m. Brady and his crew begin cleaning up the boat for the next day. He says they do about a 70 percent clean up right after the charter. 12:30 a.m. Brady sets the boat’s alarm and drives home to prepare for the next charter. He sets his coffee for the next morning when he’ll get up and do it all over again.

Dear Queen Elsa of Arendelle,
JUNE 2016
21 LAKE NORMAN CURRENTS
It’s amazing how much has changed in the year since I last wrote you a Father’s Day letter. First, there are those “age appropriate” positive milestones. You are growing by leaps and bounds. Using both real and imaginary words, you are talking up a storm to each and every person, not to mention stuffed animal, cat, dog and duck you encounter. And when the clothes fairy forgets to come while you are sleeping, you take the lead on picking out an outfit for the day, proudly modeling with a smile whatever combination of pants, skirts, dresses, bath robes, tops, ski hats, ribbons, socks and boots you select. Or omit. As for the challenges, some say the “threes are more difficult than the twos,” so let’s just say if I had $1 for every time you ask “why?” when Mommy or I ask you to do something, I’d already have your college tuition paid. And if I had another $1 for every time you say “no,” I’d have the mortgage paid, too. But with every battle, tantrum, breakdown and time out, there has been a hug, kiss, handhold and reconciliatory smile, so I consider myself fortunate. Then there are the Frozen‑inspired traits that define you at this stage. You chew your hair “because Anna does it,” and you only answer to “Queen Elsa of Arendelle” — not your real name or any of the dozens of nicknames or pet names I try to call you to catch you off guard. I’m just glad you haven’t yet gotten engaged to

a boy you only just met, but I’m sure that will be coming. [Note to daughter when you are older — it was hard to discipline you during your Frozen stage when I had to begin our serious talks by addressing you sternly as “Queen Elsa” without smiling and laughing.] What has also been incredibly memorable this past year is how you developed a personality and became self-confident enough to share your thoughts and opinions — no matter what they might be. Like when we first drove by a town athletic field where big kids were playing soccer in matching uniforms, and I tried to explain to you about teams. “Daddy, I already know two things about teams,” I recall you saying. “Teams should do only good things, not bad, and teams should always be good to each other.”
If the world listened to the simple logic of toddlers like you, it would be a different, perhaps better place. You also have developed a knack for bringing me to the moment as opposed to allowing me to “stick to the plan” and always look ahead at what’s next. For example, when I stay up late at night preparing deposits and paying a big pile of bills, then leave an orderly stack of outgoing stamped mail on my desk only to awaken the next morning to find all the envelopes opened with contents strewn across the floor, you remind me that your actions were done with good intent. “Daddy, I opened the mail so you don’t have to,” you exclaim with a smile of pride. How could a Daddy get upset? Or those many times when I’m trying to buckle you in the car seat and you are laughing, squirming and
otherwise trying to evade me, especially when we are on the fringe of being late. When my frustration begins to boil, and I’m on my own second or third deep breath after a heel to the temple or a toe in the ear, it’s usually your words that bring me to the moment. “Don’t worry, Daddy,” you say. “It’s going to be just fine.” And it usually is. While I have tried to capture so much of you this year with pictures and video, there are some moments I’m glad I missed because they found their permanent place etched in my mind. Like the joyful picture I now keep of you running across the back yard, then around the flagpole and back, with the dog in hot pursuit. As your toddler legs and tiny feet fly through the grass and you laugh out loud and say, “Daddy, I’m going on my run like you and Mommy.” Struggle as I did, I know it was
just better to watch and enjoy than reach for the camera. Or when you say something that catches me completely off guard. Like when you first said to me, “Daddy, you are my hero,” then gave me a hug. No video could ever capture either you sharing those words or the emotions I felt in that moment and, if I had my hands full with a camera, I surely would have been late to the hug. So, on Father’s Day this year, Queen Elsa, thank you for being who you are, thank you for being both a good learner and good teacher, and thank you for making every day feel like Father’s Day. Oh, I almost forgot, thank you for also always freezing the bad people with your powers of snow and ice. Love, Your Marshmallow Man

GROWING UP ON NEW YORK CITY’S LOWER EAST SIDE, Tommy
Tong drew lessons from the traits of the kung fu heroes featured prominently in television shows, movies and comic books. He observed similar characteristics among the restaurateurs in his family. Hard work. Practice. Discipline. Creativity. With a touch of humor tossed in. These are the memories that guide Tommy’s approach with his new Birkdale Village restaurant, Kung Foo Noodle. As the original owner of the popular Noodletasia restaurant and brother of Steve Tong, owner of the iconic Lotus restaurants, Tommy is a popular figure at Lake Norman.

LAKE NORMAN CURRENTS
Tommy came to the United States at age 1, when his family immigrated to New York from Hong Kong. His father was a chef, and Tommy worked weekends in his cousin’s restaurant in Queens. “As I got older, when I was 16, my brother moved to Lake Norman and opened a restaurant,” Tommy recalls. “I moved down here, and I was brought into the business. I attended high school here for a year. After my brother’s restaurant was open two years, I went back to New York. That’s where my roots were. My parents are there.” He completed his education in the New York area and worked office jobs on Wall Street for a time. Yet, this other world kept calling. “Growing up in New York, I was fortunate that every time we went out, I learned to eat,” he says. “When you learn to eat, you learn to appreciate what’s good. When you go into an unsuccessful restaurant, you study and you see why it’s not succeeding. I always went to the ones that were good and ones that were not. I’m still analyzing. I’m still learning.” Tommy moved back to Lake Norman to apply what he had learned. He opened Noodletasia, which he ran for five years. Almost two years ago, he sold the restaurant and returned to New York to spend time with his parents. He continued to visit restaurants in New York and study emerging trends. He realized he missed operating his own restaurant. “I need a route in life, and I need to interact with people,” he says. “My wife told me, ‘You need this.’ The passion was still there.”
Familiar, yet creative Crab Meat Xiao Long Bao features a juicy soup dumpling with pork and crab meat. Owner Tommy Tong
Tommy has turned that passion toward making Kung Foo Noodle a unique dining experience for the Lake Norman area. While some items on the menu are familiar, others are creative and unique
Kung Foo Noodle collaborations between Tommy and his chef. He has blended the new with staples from his heritage, and adapted dishes to his tastes. Popular dishes include the double-fried wings, with Tommy’s original sauces. Sushi, noodle dishes and adaptations of traditional dishes, such as Bao Bao and Vietnamese Pho, also appear. Tantalizing aromas emerge from the kitchen, tempting diners to be adventuresome.

The décor, too, takes a note from Tommy’s childhood, with its black and red motif and nods to pop culture from the 1970s and 1980s. He has painted Bruce Lee sayings on the wall and scattered small touches throughout, including tiny stools and opera masks displayed as art, a host station designed to look like a soup cart, and two giant Lion heads flying overhead. In the midst of this vibrant, fragrant space stands the effervescent Tommy, perhaps the biggest attraction of all.

TABLE TALK
NOTHING BEATS A COLD BEER AT A PICNIC TABLE JUNE 2016

LAKE NORMAN CURRENTS
It’s a Saturday afternoon, and the picnic tables dotting Primal Brewery’s outdoor beer garden are packed. Smack dab in the middle, a foursome of buddies who look like they’ve just finished 18 holes a bit over par share a table with three generations of an obvious Chicago sports-supporting family, the youngest an infant napping in a car seat, her Cubs ball cap pulled low. The golfers have a routine and keep their conversation low without even a reminder. It’s obvious they know the adage about not waking a sleeping baby. At the adjacent table, a handful of bearded bikers sits alongside a couple that appears either to be on a first date or in the awkward early stages of a youthful relationship. The bikers could easily inject themselves to facilitate conversation but choose instead to keep to themselves. When the couple finally drops their phones to hold hands, however, the bikers cheer and raise their glasses to toast. And far off at the end, soccer dads, who fill the table closest to the food truck, toast with IPAs and simultaneously remind their steel cleats and uniform-wearing boys that the cornhole bags aren’t footballs and the life-size Jenga
pieces aren’t swords. Their words fall on deaf ears. The scene is repeated, with every cast a bit different, at each of the nearly one dozen tables that begin at the food truck, run parallel to the cornhole courts, loop around the life-size Jenga game and end alongside the rail of an elevated patio. The rail, by the way, is fully lined by those who don’t want to miss a second of the action below. For those of age, and judging by the number of glasses at each and every picnic table, beer is the common denominator. It contributes as much to the vibe as do the picnic tables themselves. While the Primal picnic table scene has its own flair, flavor and vibe, it is not unique. Pay a visit to a picnic table at just about every other brewery, tap house and bottle shop around the lake and you’ll leave a bit different from when you arrived. Call it the lure of the picnic table. “You never know what you might find in the beer garden from a cornhole league to a life-size Jenga, food trucks or maybe just an old friend you haven’t seen in a while,” Ray Steimel, a Primal co-founder, tells me. “Rest assured your experience will always be a good one.”
all stems from the fact that I like wine. A lot. I get accused of judging a restaurant more by its wine list than by its culinary offerings. “Warped” is a tad harsh, but I do tend to pick out a wine first and then an accompanying dish afterwards. Each of us has our priorities, and I’m sticking with mine. Which takes me to the wine list at the recently opened Fresh Chef in Mooresville.
All of that translates into great value. But where does the wine list fit into all of that? I think it’s the wine list that nails it and makes a solid statement about what the restaurant’s goal really is. On the back of the menu there’s a listing of wines available by the glass. You can order a bottle if you’re in the mood. These wines are pretty tasty. I sipped on a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand while I was waiting for someone. It hit the spot. But what you must do, if
The first impression is that the list is out of place — you’re in that pub-like atmosphere that I talked about before. Then it hits you; the quality of the wine list matches up with the quality of the food. For a moment, though, let’s move away from the wine list. There are a couple of hot buttons at Fresh Chef that do it for me. Ingredients are super fresh, and that’s the secret to any great dish — start with great ingredients. Second, this is a restaurant that combines quality food with a casual, almost pub-like atmosphere.

you divide by two you’re at a price point that you might not find in a retail store, let alone a restaurant. It’s tough to come up with a simple description that fits Fresh Chef. What comes to mind, for me, is that it is Mooresville’s version of a London gastropub, and that’s pretty good. But, back to my alleged warped sense of priority, I think the wine list sets the tone. And I like that. Just one practical note, the front of Fresh Chef has only a small parking lot, and it fills up. Looking at it, you might think the restaurant is full. Not so. There are acres of parking in the shopping area behind. Park your car, and treat your palate. Enjoy. resh Chef (Mooresville F location) 645 Brawley School Road Mooresville www.freshchefkitchen.com

of thought went into this list. There are some recognizable, excellent names — Chalk Hill, Far Niente and Cakebread — to name just three. Interspersed among these vinous stars are wines that I had never come across. And that’s the fun part. The well‑known wines establish the fact that you’re dealing with something good and get you in the mood to try some of the lesser-known wines. If they keep this kind of company, they must be good. My wife and I jumped on a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Girard winery in Napa Valley. As if that’s not enough fun, it turns out that Tuesday can be your good news day. On Tuesdays, all wines are half-price. That’s all wines. Many restaurants offer halfprice days, but limit the offer to just lower-price bottles. Fresh Chef ’s reserve wine list takes on a new shine. June is filled with celebrations and who doesn’t love cake. Graduations, weddings and National Leave Work Early Day all scream for a Celebration Dark Chocolate Cake that is easy (1 bowl), foolproof, decadent and will keep you looking good in your swimsuit, too. Your body will embrace this cake, which contains good-for-you monounsaturated oils and can be made with cassava flour for a gluten-free option. Each mouthful is chock full of magnesium and iron due to a simple swap of the usual processed cocoa for an unsweetened cacao powder. Coconut sugar changes places with white sugar to create carmelish undertones, as it delivers a low-sugar, high-nutrient option. There is a lot to celebrate this June at my house with my youngest son graduating high school. And as a family of chocolate cake lovers, this cake is going to make a star appearance more than once.
Ingredients Nine-inch round cake
1 1/4 cups coconut sugar (I like the one from Big Tree with vanilla beans.) 1 1/2 cups cassava flour or 2 cups sprouted spelt flour 3/4 cup, plus 2 tablespoons unsweetened cacoa powder (I like Navitas brand.) 1 1/2 teaspoons non-aluminum baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 2 large responsibly laid eggs 1 cup (8 ounces) whole cow’s or non‑dairy milk 1/2 cup extra virgin avocado or olive oil 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste 1 cup (8 ounces) boiling filtered water

Built on Boats Wher-rena Boatland celebrates 50 years on Lake Norman by Sam Boykin photography by Ken Noblezada
J
ust a few years after Duke Power (now Duke Energy) completed Cowans Ford Dam along the Catawba River and flooded an expansive valley to create Lake Norman, a young Davidson College student had an inspired idea. Norman Junker grew up in Charlotte, and at 13 he built a small shack in his yard where he sold bait and tackle to local fishermen. Years later, after Norman and his siblings inherited some money
from their grandparents, he proposed that they pool their resources and build a marina on the shores of the sparkling new lake. The Junker kids — Norman, Harrell, George and Bill — paid about $26,000 for 23 lakeside acres in Cornelius. Wher-rena Marina — named after the Junker kids’ grandparents, Wherry and Rena Junker — opened in the spring of 1966. This year the venerable boat dealership celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Heaven on the water
LAKE NORMAN CURRENTS
Jeff Junker, Norman’s son, grew up in Denver on the west side of the lake, and spent much of his childhood at his family’s marina, which also had a boat dealership, restaurant, campground, arcade and swim area. For a kid who loved the water, it was heaven.
“My dad and cousins taught me how to ski when I was 4,” he says. “I got my first boat when I was 6 — a little jet boat that was 12 feet long and about twice as wide as a canoe. By the time I was 10 they would let me go out on the boat by myself until sundown.
You can’t do that today.” Back in the 1960s and ‘70s there was little development around Lake Norman, which was still mostly a sleepy weekend getaway for Charlotte families. The marina soon became a popular destination, where people gathered to enjoy the lake and a waterfront meal at The Galley fish camp. But as the lake grew and business flourished, Norman moved Wher-rena’s boat dealership from its original location to the current showroom on Catawba
Jeff Junker, son of Norman Junker, took over the family business in 2003 after his father passed away.
Avenue in 1987. He named the new facility Wher-rena Boatland. A few years later the original marina was sold and eventually became Midtown Sundries and most recently Port City Club. Jeff started working summers at the boat dealership when he was 15. “I did everything from stock shelves to sell skis to put together Sea-Doos,” he says. By then he was also passionate about watersports, including kneeboarding, wakeboarding and riding Jet Skis, and spent as much time as he could on the lake. After high school Jeff went to North Carolina State University where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. While he had plenty of career options, he says his passion and heart remained with the family business. “I always joked that I did the mechanical engineer degree as my back-up plan.” Sadly, just 10 days after Jeff graduated from college in 2003, his father passed away from cancer. Jeff stepped in and took over the business. “It was a rough period, but I wanted Wher-rena Boatland to succeed.” Continued on page 34

Rebuilding a business
JUNE 2016
At the helm, Jeff says he learned a lot about the business over the next several years, especially when the recession hit. “I really scaled back as we needed to, and then I kind of rebuilt it in my own way. By then I had the confidence and experience to do it right.” He also brought on a new partner. Jeff met Barry Stevens shortly after he moved to Mooresville from South Africa in 2007. Barry, similar to Jeff ’s father, launched a boat business when he was just 19. After selling boats in South Africa, Barry moved to Mooresville and began exporting boats all over the world, including many he purchased from Wherrena. The two eventually partnered, and in 2011 they bought the business from the Junker family and together continue to sell boats all over the world.
The team at Wher-rena Boatland specializes in selling a variety of low-maintenance boats.
In addition to being one of the first boat dealerships in Lake Norman, Wher-rena is also one of the biggest, at an expansive 22,000 square feet, including a 12,000-square-foot covered area outside where hundreds of boats are displayed. Jeff says there are plans to open an expanded stateof-the-art service center in 2017. Wher-rena specializes in new, high-end performance Premier
pontoons. “We’ve carved out a nice niche for ourselves,” says Jeff. The company also sells a variety of sport boats, deck boats and cruisers. “We’re all about boats that are reliable and require very little maintenance. People don’t want to mess with taking care of their boat. They just want to get on board and go, and that’s what we provide.” Jeff, 35, says Wher-rena is
much more to him than just a business. He’s proud to carry on a tradition that his father started, and one that has had such a lasting impact in the community. “In the future, if I have kids and they’re interested in the business, I would love that. Lake Norman is just such a great place to live and work,” he says. “I’d like to be able to share that for many years to come.”

he steady southwest wind is blowing somewhere between 15 and 20 mph on this clear, brisk spring day, and there are neither boats nor Jet Skis on the water as far as the eye can see. With gear in tow, two stand-up paddlers leave a car in the parking lot of Eddie’s on Lake Norman in Mooresville, then hitch a one-way ride south to the Peninsula Yacht Club, the best southern spot on the lake they know of to put in. They paddle first to the starting point on the windward side of Outrigger Island then point their boards north up the main channel. Their journey is as exhilarating as it is blissful. By water, the distance they cover is approximately 10 miles, and they top out at just over 8.2 mph. To Water Turtle and Rob Not Rob, this day is not so much about logging the miles, nor is it about hitting a top speed. In stand-up paddling (SUP) terms, they are downwinding, and this journey is all about feeling the flow. On a warm and windless late spring evening, as the sun begins to dip below the horizon, a handful of paddlers set off slowly from the docks outside My Aloha Paddle and Surf in Cornelius. The water is calm, unseasonably warm, too, and for the next 75 minutes, their adventure will be a much more stationary one. Rather than move through the water, the paddlers float in place and follow an instructor through My Aloha’s signature yoga class, an inspiring and playful journey through the Hawaiian Huna principals.

it is windsurfing or stand-up paddling, and we are drawn being out there however we can,” Barnhardt says. “Back then, when the wind wasn’t blowing, I simply decided to experiment with something different, so I gave stand-up paddling a try by improvising on just about everything, yet felt the pull almost right away.” When Barnhardt shared the experience with his windsurfing buddies, a friend said he

What makes this yoga class different? The very fact that each person is balanced atop a board approximately three feet wide and must maintain her balance through each pose or risk falling into the water. That makes this class one of the most unique choices for any water-loving yoga practitioner. Connecting mind, body and spirit becomes something entirely different when it is done on water.
Board chairs As best as he can recall, it was 2007 when
Mac Barnhardt (aka Water Turtle) first experimented with stand‑up paddling. The wind wasn’t blowing in his Lake Norman back yard, so the long-time windsurfer grabbed a 12-foot board, removed the mast and headed out onto the water using a doublebladed kayak paddle for propulsion. He got the idea after flipping through a magazine and seeing watermen Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama demonstrating the sport in Hawaii. “There is a handful of us, guys and gals, who enjoy the high performance aspect of being on the water whether
had first tried stand-up paddling in the ’80s but never stayed with it. Regardless of who was first or second, by the time Barnhardt bought his first used board in 2008, stand-up paddling had been introduced to the lake. “I have rediscovered and relearned some things thanks to SUP and SUP racing,” Barnhardt, a top East Coast racer and an adventure traveler who has paddled the Hood River, as well as waters in the Baja, the Caribbean, Hatteras Island and Hawaii, plus a father of three who all SUP, explains. “Humility, both respecting the ocean as well as getting beat by faster paddlers, sportsmanship, gratitude and also gaining

almost anyone who has a love of water and a desire to connect with it on a deeper level should give stand-up paddling a try. The ease, grace, simplicity and purity of the sport make it appealing to all ages and abilities. “Whether it’s paddle surfing or riding a downwind swell on a lake or ocean or just paddling across still water, once you experience the sensation, it’s all the same,”
Barnhardt paddling at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte.
Barnhardt says. “Watch how a pelican glides across the surface, it’s that feeling. When you do it, you’ll know. It’s the feeling of the glide.” “Using your whole body to connect with nature is the perfect combination,” Tufty adds. “There is nothing better.”

a new appreciation for our environment, our local waters and taking care of it. That’s what stays with me. I’m a better person when I come off the water than when I start.” SUP yoga instructor, Maricel Tufty, was initially reluctant to try yoga, thinking it would be boring and unrewarding. But after herniating a disc and learning about yoga’s rehabilitative qualities, she agreed to attend a class solely because her sister taught it. The connection she felt was powerful and immediate. Bringing yoga to water and practicing it on a paddleboard happened shortly after she relocated to Lake Norman five years ago and began experimenting on her own. “I discovered so much more when I put the two together,” Tufty says. “There is such a strong connection with the water. It’s about going with the flow of the water and finding your balance, listening and feeling the water beneath your board, splashing, soothing. It just feels good, and it just feels right.

ears ago Mike Seets was walking with his wife, Eileen, by the ocean. The couple owned a condo at North Myrtle Beach, but with three kids getting older and involved in sports and activities, having time to drive to the beach for a weekend jaunt was becoming scarce. “I turned to my wife and said, ‘If we could get a lake house, would you be willing to swap this for that?’ ” recalls Mike. “She said, ‘yes,’ immediately.”

dwellings So the couple, who live in nearby Concord, sold their condo and began searching for a vacation home on Lake Norman. Every time they found something they liked, someone else made an offer, and it was gone. They finally got on a Realtor’s e-mail list that posted real estate listings immediately. “At 11 on a Friday night, this lot posted. The Seets had the home torn down and began looking at house plans and calculating costs. Then one day, Mike found something on Ebay that changed everything.

A good deal As he was browsing the online auction site, Mike discovered a FEMA modular home from Hurricane Katrina. The 832-square-foot cottage wasn’t exactly what he was looking for, but it was close enough. “I wanted a fun little small something,” explains Mike. “I stumbled on this, and I couldn’t have built this for what it cost.” He bought it based on the pictures he saw online, and two days later it was delivered to Lake Norman from Mississippi. “The day it [the house] got here, it was a scary thing, because I had already paid the guy,” he says, “but for what we paid for it, I thought if there’s something wrong with it, we’ll fix it.” Luckily everything was in great shape, so Mike brought someone in to position it on the site and set it. That was in 2011, and ever since then the family of five has worked together to make it their very own lake getaway. “We just added a Continued on page 50

Initial projects included redoing the floors with laminate hardwoods so that they could withstand frequent wet and sandy feet, and painting the kitchen cabinets white to update the space. Studio-C Cinema (June 3-5, 17-18) In Son of Saul, Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of largescale extermination. In this dark story, there is a great deal of hope: in a total loss of morality, value and religion, a man who starts listening only to a faint voice within him to carry out seemingly vain and useless deed finds morality and survival inside. On June 17-18, The Second Mother will be shown. When the estranged daughter of a hard-working live-in housekeeper in an upper class suburb or Sao Paulo suddenly appears, the unspoken class barriers that exist within the home are thrown into disarray. The surprising twists and turns of the clever story explore the tenderness and difficulties of modern Brazilian culture. Friday-Saturday, 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday 2:30 p.m. $9.25, $5 students plus tax; call for reservations. Fresh from the Farm Editor Lori K. Tate goes back to her roots at the Davidson Farmers’ Market by Lori K. Tate photography by John G. Tate THOUGH I GREW UP IN A DEVELOPMENT IN NEARBY CABARRUS COUNTY, IT WAS A DEVELOPMENT SURROUNDED BY FARMLAND. My dad grew up on a farm, I

had friends who lived on farms and my high school held Farm Day every spring. This was a special day when students were allowed to drive their family’s tractors to school. Though I rode around in my friend’s tractor (complete with an air conditioner and FM radio), I didn’t appreciate how important farming was. Remember that this was the 1980s — the height of fast and processed food. Why would you want to eat something you grew when you could buy a Fruit Roll-Up? Needless to say, my perspective has changed, which explains why I love going to the Davidson Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings. Nestled behind Davidson’s Town Hall in downtown Davidson, the market is in its ninth year. “It’s grown every year since it opened,” says Market Manager Abby Wyatt. “It attracts crowds from 800 to 1,000 on Saturdays during the summer.” While the Davidson Farmers’ Market features 30 to 40 vendors from the area selling produce, cheese, eggs, meats, flowers, homemade soap and more, it also offers live music, chef demonstrations and the chance to catch up with your neighbors. On July 2, the market is offering a Kids Day, where it will hold a mini competition modeled after the Food Network show Chopped featuring teams of kids. August 1 is the 6th Annual Salsa Showdown, where five community contestants create salsa with ingredients from the market. And every Saturday you can skip over to Main Street Books with your kids at 10 a.m. for story time. How you shop the market is up to you. It’s important to know that dogs are

no longer allowed at the market due to sanitation and safety concerns. Service dogs are an exception. Serious shoppers arrive when the market opens at 8 a.m. to secure a good parking space and to make sure they get the best selection, as items like meat, seafood and tomatoes sell out quickly. Almost everyone brings a tote and/ or cooler, and some folks come armed with wagons. If you forget to bring a bag, no worries, as most vendors have plastic bags you can use. Strolling shoppers arrive around 9:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. after working out or sleeping in. You’ll see plenty of people in workout clothes and kids dressed in sport uniforms, either coming from the game or headed to it. They’re happy to buy what’s available and even happier to sip on a cup of coffee from Summit’s outdoor brewing station. Be sure to check out the coffee shop’s Pour Overs, as I’m positive it is the fanciest and most delicious cup of coffee I’ve ever had. Some of my favorite vendors include Peaches & Cream from Wadesboro (blackberries, peaches and strawberries), Barbee Farms from my native Concord (you haven’t eaten a tomato until you’ve eaten one from this family farm), Fading D Farm of Salisbury (my 6-year-old daughter loves their water buffalo gourmet cheese)
and, of course, Herr’s Fresh Flowers from Vale. If you want to make someone’s day, buy a bouquet of locally grown flowers from Herr’s. But here’s the thing, all of the vendors bring something wonderful and fresh to the market, I just haven’t tried them all yet. However this summer, as my family moves more of its grocery shopping to the market, I’m excited about what our taste buds will discover. avidson Farmers’ Market D Located next to Davidson’s Town Hall between Main and Jackson Streets 8 a.m.-noon every Saturday www.davidsonfarmersmarket.org.
