Today there are more than 27 million small businesses in the United States. The small business administration considers any business with less than 500 employees to be a small business. This represents 99.7 percent of all employer firms, and they employ half of all private sector employees. During this difficult and challenging job market, it is small business that has created between 60 to 80 percent of all new jobs in our country. Minorities and women account for 20 percent of the privately owned businesses. Dr. Martin Luther King talked about the equality of opportunity. The promises put forth in our Declaration of Independence now seem even more compelling than they have in the past. “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Are we still brave enough to walk into the unknown venture of starting a new business? The first chamber of commerce in the English-speaking world was started in New York City. The date was 1768, six years before the writing of our Declaration of Independence in 1776. The qualities of equal empowerment and the appreciation of the individual right to self-determination were the starting points to our becoming a free nation. Those first Americans coming to the New World fled poverty and were contracted into indentured servitude in order to cover the cost of transportation to the colonies. The New World held promise Kirk Ballard for those brave enough to walk into the unknown. The struggle to survive and the belief in their own abilities as well as their deep and abiding faith in power greater than their own became the foundation upon which our nation was built. We hold in great esteem the memories of our forefathers who suffered great loss so that we could be free and dream. For many, the starting of their own business is the beginning of fulfilling a dream. Each year an estimated 600,000 new employer firms open for business. Seven out of ten new businesses survive at least two years, half at least five years, one-third last at least 10 years and a quarter stay in business 15 years or more. Most people who go into small business are aware of the risks. The above figures on small business survival rates help to dispel the myths on small business

From Deep Well to Today

Mooresville has come a long way in the past 400 years by Lori K. Tate

A

ndy Poore knows Mooresville inside and out. He’s not only a native of Race City USA, he’s also the town historian and archivist, as well as the curator of special collections at the Mooresville Public Library. When asked to talk about Mooresville, he goes right to the beginning to get the conversation started. And what surprises most folks, especially newcomers, is that Mooresville’s beginning dates back the 1600s. Initially what was to become Mooresville began with a community formed around plantations and farms. There were several large families around at the time — the Houstons, the Templetons, the Walls, etc. Most of these families settled in what is now the Mt.

Mourne area of Iredell County. “At one point we were called the Community of Deep Well,” explains Poore. “Because Mooresville sits on a natural fault line…there was a deep well that was fed by several springs and creeks. The community came up around that.” The Catawba River also played a part in the making of Mooresville, as it was deep and wide enough to transport cotton up the river on flat-bottom boats. While the northern end of Iredell County focused on cattle and grain, the southern portion concentrated on cotton, indigo and rice. Like many other North Carolina towns, cotton led to textiles. At first farmers sent their cotton to Charlotte to be processed. Once the railroad came to town, Mooresville could send products to

bigger cities, which eventually attracted mills such as Dixie Cotton Mills and Mooresville Mills. However, during The Civil War, the tracks were taken up to keep the Richmond line running in Virginia. In 1882, the tracks returned to Mooresville. John Franklin Moore owned a lot of land in the area and eventually sold part of it so the new railroad could come through. Moore’s family also built the first train depot in town. The Moores were so prominent that the area began to be known as The Village of Moore. John Franklin fostered a sense of community by building some of the earliest buildings around the town’s depot. Up until then the area was peppered with small stores on personal property, some were even based in homes. John Franklin soon saw the need to evolve from a village to a town, so he began promoting incorporation. In the first meeting of the town’s appointed board, the members selected Mooresville, meaning Moore Village, to be the name of the town. From there, Mooresville started booming and at one time had as many as 14 operating mills. None of the town’s mills closed during The Great Depression, but that doesn’t mean Mooresville wasn’t affected. “People who lived during that time just say everyone was poor, that’s all there was

history

other mill towns, Mooresville had other industries and geographical features to sustain it. The racing industry, along with corporations like Ingersoll Rand and Lowe’s Companies, Inc., plus Mooresville’s proximity to Lake Norman and Charlotte, make it a thriving area for business and recreation. If only John Franklin Moore could see his town today.

to it,” says Poore. “It didn’t matter if you lived on Academy Street or Mill Hill, you were just poor.” When World War II occurred, Mooresville sent its own off to fight, while folks at home did everything they could to help. Three of the local mills won government contracts — Burlington Industries made parachutes, Troutman Shirt Company produced shirts while Dixie Cotton Mills manufactured pants and socks for the war. The famous American journalist Ernie Pyle wrote about the men from Iredell County in one of his columns. After the war, the mills continued to boom until the textile industry began waning all over the state. Poore says Mooresville was lucky in that all of the mills didn’t close at the same time — two still operate today. Unlike

Downtown Mooresville is a wonderful blend of the past and present.

M

ooresville is called home by “bornhere’s” and “moved-here’s” for a variety of reasons. Some use the word as a locator that could change in the future. They often remark that the “sleepy mill town” they heard about

is a surprisingly dynamic and growing community. Others see little of the town character from their commute to Charlotte. Some never travel east to visit the historic downtown business district and are aware of only recent history.

As a Mooresville native, I look at things differently. I learned about the “early years” from family scrapbooks and stories heard at my great grandmother’s kitchen table, from the people who experienced the events. I know that our “mill town” was never sleepy. Attention to moving forward left no room for enjoying the status quo. Even when our manufacturing base began to erode, the community and its leaders worked to replace it with a diversified group of businesses and industries. I join others as I strive to follow in the footsteps of my family members — those who served as law enforcement officers to protect the community, as well as those who led civic organizations in their efforts to make the community a better place to live, work and raise a family. There is a comforting continuity of spirit that appreciates the “what was” because it helps to explain the “what is.” Mooresville natives have an appreciation for today’s Race City USA, with a look back at the days when Mooresville was the “best way to anywhere.” Our connections to the past are strong and, more often than not, enable “natives” to work with fellow citizens to move the town A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

forward into a promising future. There is a connection among the John Franklin Moore descendants to the first store that welcomed travelers at the Big Oak stagecoach stop. Theirs is a legacy of community action, from dedication to schools and churches to the building

of the downtown business district. The Harris family can look with pride on an uncle, Isaac Harris, who became the town’s first elected mayor and leader in the expansion of the railroad to include a route through Barber Junction to Mocksville and Winston-Salem.

Neels and Johnstons remember the days when eggs, butter and chickens were sold and shipped by train to points north, south, east and west. Troutmans, Millsaps and Macks see their legacy in action with each scoop of DeLuxe Ice Cream. Sigmons can look at the War Memorial Recreation Center and the local Soup Kitchen to find leadership in providing services to citizens. Brawley and Knox family members can look with pride to the inclusion of Lake Norman, the Great Inland Sea, into the fabric of our lives. Natives have an appreciation and understanding of how this land between the Yadkin and Catawba rivers grew and changed over a span of nearly 200 years. s a growing area, Mooresville happily welcomes newcomers every day. However, it’s also pretty easy to find folks who have lived most of their lives here. We asked a group of prominent Mooresville citizens about why they chose to build their lives and careers in this town just north of Charlotte. Here’s what they had to say.

Mike Cook

President/Owner Cavin-Cook Funeral Home & Crematory What do you like about Mooresville? Mooresville is a community full of opportunities and possibilities. There is still that feeling of being a community. Mike Cook Whether it is the much-awaited Christmas parade, the next church barbecue or a Chamber of Commerce event that is coming up. I am also very proud of the Mooresville Graded School System and look forward to my grandchildren enjoying their school experience here as much as I did. How has it changed? I grew up in Mooresville and have seen it transform from a small mill town where if you wanted to impress your date you would take them to Charlotte or Statesville. Now people bring their friends to Mooresville to impress

them. I started working in downtown Mooresville when I was 14 years old. Everything seemed to be focused on the downtown area, and there was such a closeness that everyone seemed to share. I knew the storeowners, the movie theatre manager, everyone that worked for our postal system, and all of the bank managers and personnel as good friends. Now that we have grown so much, it seems that that personal feeling of knowing everyone has changed. That has been quite an adjustment for me. What makes this a special place to live? It is still all about relationships. We have so many wonderful people who grew up in Mooresville that are still living here and also very special people that are moving into our area. It is fun to make new relationships and see how much the newcomers enjoy our area. Mooresville is such a great geographic area — only a few hours east to the beaches and only a few hours west to the mountains. Have you ever lived away from here? Yes. I lived in Cincinnati, Ohio while studying for the funeral business. My family also lived in High Point for five years, but we always knew that we would come back home. My wife is a lifetime resident of Mooresville also. Why did you decide to make Mooresville your home as an adult? Even though, as I said before, we lived in two other places for a short while we always knew that we wanted to raise our family here. I grew up here, and I wanted my children and grandchildren

to enjoy the pleasures of this town. My business is Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, and it is my passion. I was fortunate enough to be hired at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home when I was just a teenager. Since then I knew that I wanted to someday own the business, and it still does not seem real that my dream has come true. What is your favorite thing to do in Mooresville? I enjoy being involved in the community. I have so enjoyed working with and for the Chamber of Commerce, being a part of such a great organization as the Mooresville Rotary Club and being involved with the Shriners and their great commitment to children. Also, I do not know anyone, young or old, that enjoys the Mooresville Christmas Parade more than I do.

Why Mooresville?

it’s great if we can restore an old building rather than tear it down. How has it changed? I think more change has come in the last 25 years than in the previous 100 years in Mooresville. When the business parks were built and the race teams moved to town it was a new day, but the change that made the most impact was when “liquor by the drink” was voted into the county. When that happened all the restaurants moved to town. In my opinion, that’s when the real growth began. What makes this a special place to live? It used to be if you wanted anything significant you had to go to Charlotte, Statesville or Winston-Salem, now you can get about everything you need in Mooresville. It’s bittersweet because we don’t need the heavy traffic, but that comes with growth and growth means jobs. There’s a lot of small towns in North Carolina that would love to bottle up what we have here in Mooresville and take it home with them. We are blessed. Have you ever lived away from here? Yes, I actually grew up in a small town called Rural Hall, North Carolina and moved to Mooresville when I was 22 years old. We’ve been here for 29 years, so this is really home for me and my family. Why did you decide to make Mooresville your home as an adult? My brothers and I grew up in a NASCAR family, and racing is how we have always made our living. When I got a full-time racing job in Charlotte, we were looking to live in Mooresville because it placed us closer to Winston. When I would go to the races, my wife, Kelly, didn’t have too far to go home on the weekends. I think we made the right decision. What’s your favorite thing to do in Mooresville? I really like riding down Main Street at night with the windows down. I 2012-13

don’t know why — I think it’s the old buildings that I enjoy. Mooresville’s just a cool little-BIG town.

What do you like about Mooresville? The people. I think Mooresville is a wonderful southern community full of caring and compassionate people. Of course, living close to Jeff Shoe the beach and mountains is pretty hard to beat. How has it changed? When I graduated from college the population was nine to ten thousand, and our community was totally dependent on the textile industry. Highway 150 was a two-lane road, and I-77 was just being built. Now our population is around 35,000, and our economy is diversified. Plus, at times, highway 150 and I-77 are parking lots. What makes this a special place to live? Once again the people. Having four seasons is wonderful and a big reason so many people have moved here. And who doesn’t love Lake Norman. Have you ever lived away from here? Our family moved to Mooresville when I was in elementary school, and I’ve been here ever since. Why did you decide to make Mooresville your home as an adult? Our family had the Ford dealership in town. So when I graduated from college I came home to work there. I thought I might stay a couple of years — that was 38 years ago. What’s your favorite thing to do in Mooresville? Play golf and float along Lake Norman on my pontoon. Life doesn’t get much better than that.

Marketing Director Randy Marion Automotive What do you like about Mooresville? The people. How has it changed? A lot has changed. Mooresville has Jennifer Marion Mills grown. There are a lot more people, more cars and more traffic. With the growth, there are more opportunities, more restaurants to choose from and more places to shop. What makes this a special place to live? Mooresville is a great area. There is still the small town feel but you have the accessibility of a Metropolitan area. Plus our location is great. You are a short drive to the mountains or the beaches if you want to plan a weekend getaway. Have you ever lived away from here? Yes. I moved away for college and after I got married. Although my husband is from Mooresville, we moved away for a short time knowing that we wanted to move back. Why did you decide to make Mooresville your home as an adult? Mooresville is a great place to raise a family. What’s your favorite thing to do in Mooresville? I enjoy a lot Mooresville has to offer from spending time in the parks to playing on the lake.

Live, Laugh, Love by Pastor Tom McCrea

S

ometimes these three words can come off as trite — live, laugh, love. But when you think of them in regard to our spirituality, they have deep meaning. As we think of our relationship with God these three words bring encouragement and truth. The Scripture teaches that when we are committed to God our burden is lighter, and when we put our faith in him we are able to experience life more abundantly. Living becomes richer. Our problems become manageable. The focus of life is transferred from self to a higher calling. Living moves from being a chore to an opportunity to see how God is going to guide you, encourage you, use you and strengthen you. “The joy of the Lord is my strength,” says Nehemiah. In our journey of faith there are so many opportunities to look at the situations we have gotten ourselves into and realize that we can laugh at ourselves for being human. The other day I went for my morning walk, and when I returned home my wife let me know that my shirt was on inside out. While not a major social faux pa, I laughed at myself as I had been out walking with two of my friends and interacted with several fellow walkers at the park. Not taking ourselves too seriously and realizing that God gives us joy is priceless. In the Bible we see that we as followers are called to do two simple things. These include loving God and loving people.

Many of us tend to make faith about us when really faith is about the one who created us. It’s about taking into account that God is the lead character in our story, and our role is support. When our perspective changes, and we get this truth, it transforms everything. Learning to love God changes how we love ourselves, which changes how we love others. The very act of choosing to love those he causes to cross our path brings so much love back to us that it transforms us from the inside out. In the Mooresville/Lake Norman area there are many wonderful houses of worship that share your beliefs and are equipped to help you on the journey of living, laughing and loving. These groups of kind, encouraging people are there to walk alongside of you as you face trials, enjoy the celebrations of life, and share the love of God and his people. Why don’t you choose a house of worship to visit this weekend? Why not come alongside of those who just might need your encouragement and help them to live, laugh and love? Buzzing with activity from Interstate 77 exits 31-36, people have a plethora of housing options in this picturesque community around Lake Norman that has it all — history, commerce and industry, restaurants and retail. Here’s a look at the many ways you can live and play in Mooresville.

Historic Downtown With the revitalization of Mooresville’s town center, including the renovations of many of the old mill homes, living downtown presents a dynamic blend of vibrancy and laidback, small-town America. Greg and Dorothy Hensley, and their

son, Houston, who’s a sophomore at Mooresville High School, live in a 100-year-old home on South Academy Street, just two blocks from Main Street. Many years ago, it was owned by Hal and Florence Johnston — a well-known town business owner and former town librarian respectively, whose portrait hangs in the library today.

How to Live Here

Greg and Dorothy work within Mooresville’s city limits and enjoy continuing to renovate their historic home with love and care. They’ve added 1,400 square feet to the initial structure that only had one bathroom and also lacked central air-conditioning and washer/dryer hookups. “We have the rare kind of neighborhood where almost everyone knows each other and has lived on the street for many years,” explains Dorothy. She and her husband enjoy walking to performances at the Charles Mack Citizen Center, as well as the many downtown

events. “There are so many reasons we love Mooresville,” she adds. “We intend to live here for the rest of our lives.”

The ’Burbs Mooresville also has many builderdesigned quiet neighborhoods near convenient retail developments. Bill and Denise Thunberg have called Franklin Grove, south of town, home for 20 years. Bill is a former Mooresville mayor and school board member, and their grown sons both attended Mooresville schools. They enjoy their neighborhood’s

mature trees and its large pond with a footbridge over the creek to Mooresville’s Bellingham Park. “We have had hot air balloons land in our cul-de-sac over the years,” recalls Denise. “Otherwise, it’s a quiet neighborhood, where we have very dear friends.” Denise has been driving the 15-minute commute to work on the west side of town for 14 years. “I drive Brawley School Road every day, and truly, NCDOT did a very nice job with the huge widening project,” she says. “It’s wonderful.”

How to Live Here

Lake Living

Downtown Mooresville appreciates and preserves its past.

The northeastern shores of Lake Norman are lined with waterfront homes. Some are in golf course communities, like The Point, a 1,200-acre neighborhood with an 18-hole Greg-Norman designed course, which is now owned by Donald Trump. Many communities offer boat slips, docks and ramps. Trevor and Mary Ellen Burton are enjoying their 16th year in Stonemarker, at the end of Brawley School Road. Because Trevor is a wine connoisseur, who writes the wine column for CURRENTS and does a monthly segment on WCNC-TV’s Charlotte Today, the couple added a wine cellar a couple of years after their custom-designed and built house was completed. Living on a peninsula with 400 feet of shoreline, the Burtons enjoy sitting on their patio and looking at “nothing but a wide expanse of lake and a large island (across from the property) packed with trees.” When they aren’t dining on the patio with friends, the Burtons enjoy the many fine restaurants in the Mooresville area. “It’s all here at the lake,” says Trevor, “but don’t tell too many people — they may want to move here.”

Troutman

Just north of Mooresville, you’ll find even more hometown quaintness In 1763, members of the Trautmann family left Germany for the English colonies. They sailed on the ship Neptune and landed in Connecticut. Soon they made their way into Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. By 1767, they’d moved into North Carolina to settle what would be their permanent home. Today, the area the Trautmanns picked for their homestead is the town of Troutman. The spelling changed soon after the family’s arrival. In 1905, Troutman residents petitioned the State Legislature for a Town Charter. Now, more than 2,100 people make their home in this town just north of Mooresville. Troutman’s relaxed approach to lake living, plus its close proximity to Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem make it an ideal spot to call home. Local landmarks such as Julia’s Talley House offer southern hospitality at its finest. For decades, Tally House has served some of the finest comfort food and southern cuisine around. Whether you choose to feast on fried chicken at the Talley House or visit the animals at Zootastic, Troutman’s educational zoo, you’re sure to find Troutman to be a welcoming place. — Lori K. Tate

Making the Grade Schools in the Mooresville area win top honors consistently by Lynn Roberson

T

he Mooresville-South Iredell area boasts some of the highest ranked schools in North Carolina, counting among them Lake Norman High School and its feeder schools, as well as the Mooresville Graded School District. Pine Lake Preparatory is a North Carolina Charter School that also resides in Mooresville. “When parents are looking at a community, they want schools that have a track record of strong performance, so they will have a sense of assurance that their children will receive a quality education,” says Dr. Mark Edwards, superintendent of the Mooresville Graded School District. Edwards and Todd Griffin, principal of Lake Norman High School in Mooresville, cite their schools’ high graduation rates and students’ accomplishments on end-ofcourse and end-of-grade tests as key indicators of quality. Lake Norman High is part of Iredell-Statesville Schools. “What I tell people coming in is, you’re looking at a school here that ranks in the top in academic performance,” explains Griffin. “We have outstanding teachers and staff here. We have outstanding students that are passionate about pursuing a college education.” Of last year’s Lake Norman High School graduates, 430 out of 513 went on to attend four-year colleges and universities. Students can also pursue a business pathway, and the

school is developing a digital media pathway, including graphic design. A freshman academy serves to help freshman find success, Griffin says. “We have teams of teachers in the ninth-grade who work with students,” he explains, adding that Lake Norman High School was awarded the National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Lighthouse award in May 2012. “We offer advisory homeroom time, character education and adviseradvisee initiatives.” The Mooresville Graded School District has earned national accolades as one of the few fully digital school districts in the nation. In April 2011 the PBS NewsHour featured the district in a segment, and in 2012 Juan Williams featured the district in a Fox News Special Report titled Fixing Our Schools. Dr. Edwards recently took part in a panel discussion regarding how to support teachers to deliver better instruction at The New York Times Education for Tomorrow conference. Through its digital conversion, the district provides individual laptops to students and teachers from 3rd through 12th grades, with a shift to MacBook Air notebook computers in 2011-2012. All grades use the SMART suite of technologies, including SMART boards. The system notes it pays for its technology and training by efficiently reallocating funds. Mitchell Community College has been recognized for Exceptional Institution Performance, which means meeting or exceeding eight performance measures and having no licensure exam with a passing rate of less than 70 percent. In addition, college transfer students have to perform as well as, or better than, University of North Carolina system students who began their college studies at a UNC institution.

Get Your Culture Fix Mooresville’s arts scene continues to grow and flourish

f attending a concert or strolling through an art gallery appeals to you, you’re in the right place. Mooresville offers a vibrant cultural scene that just keeps getting better, so get ready to have a good time. The Charles Mack Citizen Center in Downtown Mooresville is a state-of-the art facility that offers a variety of programming (think concerts, festivals and plays) year round. Masterworks School of the Arts, a local performing arts school, frequently performs plays here, and national acts have also

been known to take the stage. The 62,000-square-foot center opened in 1995 and went through a $4.5 million renovation in 2001. Funding for the building came from the CJ Mack Foundation, named for long-time resident and merchant, Charles Mack. Most folks refer to the center as the “jewel of downtown.” Down the street you’ll find the Historic Mooresville Depot, where the Mooresville Artist Guild makes its home. Music fans will also enjoy Music on Main, a fun concert series produced by the Mooresville Recreation Department that has featured acts like Da Throwback Band and The Fantastic Shakers in the past. The concerts are free and many of them take place on the Town Hall Lawn. Movies on Main is another program that offers family movies (mainly outdoors) during the warmer months. Whatever you decide to do, you can be sure that Mooresville offers everything you need for a culture fix. You just have to find what suits you best.

The gallery’s exhibitions are constantly changing, so you’re certain to find something you like. Each fall, local artists open their studios to visitors for The Lakeside Artist Studio Tour. Inspired by the Artist Alley Studio Tour in Blowing Rock, this tour allows people to connect with artists and find out what their work is all about. In the past, 30 cookers presented their chili concoctions for more than 4,000 folks to try. Chili types such as Cajun, Kansas City and Texas are always in the mix with many more. It all starts with a business plan in the beginning stages.” That’s how Kirk Ballard, president of the Mooresville – South Iredell Chamber of Commerce, likes to begin his conversations with individuals who express an interest in starting a small business in the area. “Especially in a tough economy,” he adds, “people feel the pull of going out on their own, but if they don’t do it correctly from the beginning, and just assume people are going to run to their door and buy their product or service, my experience says even the best ideas can turn into recipes for disaster.” Ballard believes the Chamber is there to give necessary guidance and counsel. “The success rate for businesses is so much higher if they have a plan to follow,” says Ballard. “What we do through the Chamber of Commerce is link entrepreneurs with the resources they need to help them get their company plan started the way our experience tells us it should.” The Chamber’s staff offers several resources. First, through an exclusive partnership with Mitchell Community College, new business leaders learn business planning skills needed to hatch their new companies. The Chamber also links proven leaders with those who need

Things are Happening Downtown

Downtown Mooresville is as exciting as ever by Lori K. Tate owntown Mooresville is the quintessential North Carolina small town. Peppered with mom and pop businesses, as well as a hardware store that dates back to 1899, Downtown Mooresville’s friendly appeal is intoxicating. However, like most downtowns across the state, Mooresville has had its share of ups and downs. Luckily for the Lake Norman area, Downtown Mooresville now flourishes while so many other downtowns have faded away. A major factor in Downtown Mooresville’s success is the Mooresville Downtown Commission. Formed in 1987, this non-profit organization is part of the N.C. Main Street Program. MDC facilitates downtown development, creates promotions, plans and implements events, supports preservation, and supplies downtown information. “Typically an organization like ours focuses on the economics of the downtown, how to improve the use of the downtown,” says Kim Atkins, executive director of the MDC. Atkins says decades worth of work has been done to make Downtown Mooresville what it is today. “There has been property sold and renovated. If you take one piece of that out of the equation, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” she explains. “There’s been a real focused energy over the past three to five years to get

So there’s some of that renewed sense of let’s really make our downtown work and be usable for our surrounding neighborhoods.” Atkins says in recent years there has been almost $4 million in private investment to up-fit buildings in the downtown area. That doesn’t include the purchase of buildings, and it also doesn’t include kitchen equipment, tables and chairs in case a restaurant

Mooresville. “The restaurants certainly add a whole new dimension and having the choices that we have now really helps drive that traffic and activity,” says Atkins. “It’s very hard to get people out of their shopping patterns because they get in a routine, but most people will venture out to try a new restaurant.” Atkins says if you make one improvement downtown, it allows for the next improvement to be made. “Suddenly one of these days people are going to wake up, and say ‘Wow, downtown has really grown overnight,’ ” Atkins says. “We’re making this a reality.”

espite an explosive population growth in recent years, Mooresville remains a town deeply rooted in history and tradition, a trait that attracts parents and children of all ages. Only in Downtown Mooresville can you window shop the Radio Flyer wagons and Red Ryder BB guns in a hardware store that first opened its doors in 1899 and browse through the bookshelves at Mooresville Public Library, an institution that’s been in town since 1939. Along with the history of downtown, the area also continues to expand recreational opportunities, whether the members of your family are interested in racing, outdoor adventure or hands-on educational experiences, there's something for everyone here.

Play at the Parks This past year, the town of Mooresville opened two new recreational facilities for members of the public to enjoy. Cornelius Road Park celebrated its first phase opening with six lighted tennis courts, a state-of-theart play structure and walking trails. The park spans 80 acres and is located on Cornelius Road. Talbert Recreation Center, located on Talbert Pointe Drive, features two regulation high school basketball courts. Each court is equipped with six basketball goals.

Explore with Exotic Animals For animal lovers, a trip to Lazy 5 Ranch is in order. Owner Henry Hampton opened the doors to Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville in 1993 and has been entertaining visitors with more than 750 animals from six continents ever since. Hampton and other members of his family operate the ranch in Mooresville without federal or state funding. bellied pigs are just a few of the animals that can be found on the ranch. Visit an antique horse barn, blacksmith shop, gift store, several petting areas and a wooden playground set during a family visit, field trip or birthday party. Choose to go through the 3 1/2-mile safari ride on a horse-drawn wagon (buckets of feed are provided) or from your own vehicle. Lazy 5 Ranch does not accept credit or debit cards so plan accordingly before your visit. Located in nearby Troutman, Zootastic Park, the brainchild of North Carolina resident Scottie Brown, opened to the public in 2010 and is also privately funded. Visitors to the park will find everything from snakes and tortoises to the more exotic red kangaroos, camels, zebras, bison, tigers, as well as a barnyard petting zoo with cows, horses and chickens. Zootastic is open seven days a week and offers educational tours, birthday parties, summer camps, as well as the annual Christmas Wonderland of Lights event. There is also a playground and picnic areas for guests. The General Store is stocked with gifts and souvenirs from around the world, as well as T-shirts, hats and treats.

o me it seems that the fine dining opportunities around the lake just keep getting better and better. Not so long ago the only option if you wanted a quality food and wine experience was to head into Charlotte. No more. If anything, the flow of traffic has reversed. Imagine that, Mooresville acting as a dining magnet. Of course, that’s just my opinion, and we all know what personal opinions are worth. But how about this for a hard metric that can back up my opinion? The ancient and prestigious dining group, the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, normally hangs out in some of Charlotte’s best restaurants to wine and dine at their splendid tables. Now they include Mooresville in their repertoire. A few months back the Chaîne took over Mooresville's Caruso’s restaurant for an evening of some of the best Italian cuisine you can find anywhere. When you drop into Pasquale Caruso’s restaurant at Brawley Commons it’s like you’re transported to an upscale trattoria somewhere on a backstreet in Rome — with ambiance and aromas to match. Magnificent. If you’re in the mood for a more domestic experience, you’re in luck again. Mosey downtown to the Epic Chophouse on South Main Street. Once inside you’ll think you’re in one of the better spots in New York or Chicago. Great steaks, great seafood and a spectacular wine list with servers who know what wines to recommend with a meal. it's just a simple hamburger (or bison burger) that you're hankering after. You're in luck. Drop into the Blu Star Grill on Marketplace Avenue near Mooresville's Harris Teeter shopping center. The quality and freshness of ingredients is what makes this place special. Add some fried green tomatoes as a side to your hamburger, and you're in foodie heaven. Blissful. All of this is just the tip of a tasty iceberg. There’s a vast choice of humbler but no less excellent fare. We have a huge selection of Asian eateries, pizza restaurants, meat and three vegetable dives, and lots of sandwich restaurants. Speaking of sandwiches, a place not to be missed is Duckworth’s Grill and Taphouse. This place is home to the best Philly Cheesesteak outside The City of Brotherly Love. Ready, Set, Go Local Kids Gear Up For Sports by Mike Savicki

oung athletes from across Mooresville and the southern part of Iredell County have more opportunities than ever to take the field and participate in their favorite sports. At Mooresville’s United Soccer Academy, the skills training and personalized instruction start early for boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 12. Whether it is in camps, small group skill development sessions or in a supervised after-school practice, the year-round focus on these fields is solely on player development instead of winning. “Our program is all about bringing out the best of each player in a small group environment,” says Bobby Gordon, sports director. “We felt like there was a need to give local parents a place where they could take their kids to develop the basics of the game without the pressure of competition. Our focus is on teaching necessary soccer skills and helping kids grow into great players. That’s what makes us proud.” If the turnout of nearly 200 players at a recent Carolina Comets fall tournament team tryout in Mooresville is any indication, the sport of fast pitch softball is enjoying a tremendous rise in popularity among girls and young ladies between the ages of 8 and 18. “If you turned the clock back even 10 years, you’d be hard pressed to find thriving fast pitch softball around Lake Norman,” begins Roger McGuffey, director of the Mooresville-based Carolina Comets, an organization founded to offer

Not a season passes where the local papers don’t recount the wins and losses of two of the area’s strongest athletic powerhouses. Speaking of lacrosse, just this past year the Lake Norman High School men’s lacrosse team won the state championship. So whether your sport is soccer, softball, lacrosse or football, baseball, basketball, swimming, tennis, or track, you’ll find a playing field ready to welcome your young athlete. Stars are born every season under the lights in Mooresville, and the area’s next great athletic standout might just be your son or daughter. Football gets top billing at Mooresville High School, with home games played on state-of-the-art artificial turf at Coach Joe Popp Stadium.

Welcome to Race City USA Mooresville gets the checkered flag when it comes to motorsports by Mike Savicki

ooresville is known as auto racing’s home base for good reason. In the early 1990s, as NASCAR captured the national spotlight and became the American motorsport industry’s race series of choice, team owners looked for a location where they could set down their roots and get down to the business of speed. Bypassing race friendly cities like

Daytona, Atlanta, Talladega and Richmond, team owners chose the sleepy bedroom community once nicknamed Port City. Racing had a new home in Mooresville, and the green flag waved for growth. In about the time it takes a Sprint Cup car to motor through a 500-mile race on the nearby Charlotte Motor Speedway, Mooresville transformed itself into auto racing’s new home. Industry vendors, suppliers and small businesses followed suit and joined teams and drivers by migrating to the area. Race fans were quick to follow. With more than onemillion spectators packing motorsports events throughout North Carolina each year, a visit to Race City USA is a huge part of the checkered flag experience. Visitors can spend the day touring race shops, watching crew members build and tune cars, and

exploring the history of auto racing in one of Mooresville’s auto racing museums. And if water is your thing, taking a boat tour will let you get up close and personal with many of the lakefront homes that belong to the sport’s top owners, drivers and crew members. Penske Racing’s state-of-the-art facility houses the operations of their NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series teams as well as its IZOD Indy car headquarters. Fans can catch the shop action on a 330foot fan walk that allows viewers to get up close and personal with the crews as they prepare cars for upcoming races almost every week of the year. JR Motorsports, the 66,000-square-foot facility owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr., is the home of JR Nation, complete with a retail store and “Dale Jr. Fan Experience” room that chronicles the life and racing career of Earnhardt, Jr. Kyle Busch Motorsports is a 77,000-square-foot corporate headquarters equipped to handle race preparations for Busch’s fleet of Toyota Tundra trucks. In addition to its 2,000-square-foot retail store, the facility is packed with enough green technology initiatives to put it on the road to LEED certification. NASCAR Technical Institute, the advanced motorsports training component of Universal Technical Mooresville resident Sam Hornish Jr. switched from the IndyCar Series to NASCAR.

Main Street in Downtown Mooresville is the home of the North Carolina Auto Racing Walk of Fame. With a growing number of sidewalk markers honoring legends including Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip, Junior Johnson and more, visitors can experience the motorsports version of Hollywood’s famous Walk of Fame. It’s in front of the Charles Mack Citizen Center. “We’ve come a long way since moonshine running turned into a multibillion dollar industry more than 60 years ago,” said North Carolina Governor Bev Purdue as she signed Executive Order 49, establishing the Governor’s Motorsports Council. “I’m taking the time to rev up our commitment to the motorsports industry, which supports thousands of high-tech jobs in North Carolina.”

After completing the general automotive syllabus at any of UTI's national campuses, students travel to Mooresville to learn the specifics of racing. hen Karen Palacios-Jansen, a golf performance specialist, Nike Golf Advisory Staff member, David Leadbettertrained instructor and AFAA certified personal trainer, leads online classes from her home studio in Mooresville, she changes the way golfers around the country approach their game. When she tees it up and works with students on any one of the varied courses close to her back yard, she enjoys some of the most varied and challenging holes anywhere in the state. It’s a combination Jansen truly appreciates. “You get a mix of the old and new in terms of golf course design in the Mooresville area,” explains Jansen, who is also the wife of Olympic gold medal speed skater, Dan Jansen.“You'll find classically designed courses that reflect typical Carolina Donald Ross-type courses that have narrow, tree-lined fairways and well-placed bunkers that guard small greens. While traveling to enjoy the game is fantastic, coming home to golf is uniquely special, too. “Playing day to day on a course like Trump National Charlotte like I do spoils me when I travel to other golf courses,” Jansen says. “Almost every hole has a view of the lake or of an amazing home. Nothing is more calming than looking out into the lake and seeing sailboats or wildlife. We live in a vacation environment, so even if I play other amazing golf courses, the views and amenities usually can't compare to what I have to look forward to when I return home.” And how’s this for an approach shot? “There are not too many places in the world where you can drive your boat to the golf course,” she says.

The Chamber Working for You T

he Mooresville Chamber of Commerce was first established in 1916. Almost 100 years later, the Chamber is still working hard for small businesses in the area. In 1953, the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce was reorganized and received a Certificate of Incorporation from the State of North Carolina. It was at this time the Chamber had its first full-time paid staff. It operated under this name until 1982, when the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce and Mooresville Merchants Association merged. From this merger, the chamber assumed its current identity as the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of this organization is for advancement of the civic, commercial and industrial growth of general interest of the Town of Mooresville and the South Iredell area. It is a nonprofit organization, as it dispenses information concerning all aspects of the community and acts as a catalyst in regard to civic activities. The Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce is a major force in promoting the quality of life in this area.
