How long have you been in Charlotte and what attracted you to the city? I have been in Charlotte for six years. My father passed away in 2000, and I instantly learned how short life is and there is no time to waste if you are unhappy and I was dispirited in Milwaukee. I loved sports, being creative and thinking outside the box, and I always had a fascination with living in the south and Charlotte encompassed everything I wanted for myself. In June of 2003, two weeks after my decision to move, I took my best friend, Tara, with me to Charlotte to find an apartment and to enrolled at UNCC July of 2003. How did you get involved with 704events.com and why? Ever find yourself in divine intervention? I was at a

2010 will be an exciting year; what is in store for 704events.com? Wow, 2010 is THE year for 704events.com! There is a newly redesigned website coming out in the first quarter of 2010, we have some strong partnerships on the negotiating table, I am working with local venues and individuals to create my own events in spring, a clothing line is at the beginning stages of creation, and I will become the owner of 704events.com!

What’s been the most gratifying aspect of running 704events.com? Being a source for people to get connected with events in the community is definitely the most gratifying aspect. A few people have told me that 704events.com has completely changed their lives because they feel a purpose to get involved in the community and are not scared to go out and try new things alone. I have never made it a secret that my first two years were rough. I moved here knowing no one and having no friends or family here. I spent many nights at home crying because I was lonely and thought I made a massive mistake in my nearly cross country transition. Once I got over myself, things started falling into place and I can proudly say it’s the best decision I have ever made! You are also a vital part of Women With Know How; what is it you do for the organization? I am currently the lead writer for the Women With Know How eMagazine; feature articles I also am a sales executive for the eMagazine and directory. What prompted you to come on board for WWKH? The concept sold it self to me. Mimi has been a great friend, mentor, and partner since we met and the ideals behind Women With Know

How are right on par with mine. I completely understand the importance of branding yourself fully and live my business life on partnerships and strong business relations. Plus, both Women With Know How and 704events.com are careers that I have that help people succeed and grow their businesses – How many people can say that?! What are your goals and wishes for the New Year? My goals are to create balance with personal life, my health and fitness and to get completely out of debt! Professionally, my goals are to master time management and take Women With Know How and 704events.com to a new level of awareness in the Charlotte community. Both businesses are a necessity for people to know about. What advice would you have for young professional women starting out? Set goals and stick to them, modify them when needed, and never lose sight of them. Network and get connected with professionals and take it a step further than collecting business cards – Get to know people, become a connection point or a referral source for your contacts and clients, and NEVER think you are disadvantaged because of your age or lack of experience.

friend’s birthday party and my friend’s sorority sister’s sister-in-law was visiting from Las Vegas. We got into a conversation about 702events.com, which she was starting in Las Vegas and she asked me if she would bring 704events.com to Charlotte, would I work it with her - The rest is history! I joined because of my passion behind the mission in the website to connect locals with events and help businesses promote their events on a large scale. I pledged when I signed on that I would do all I can so new movers and transplants to Charlotte wouldn’t feel like I did when I moved here, and also for long-time locals to be fully involved with the new flavor coming to Charlotte. I wish for all residents in the 704 enjoy the offerings our community gives us!

Not to worry, there is a Quick Access Toolbar where you can add buttons, groups and even launch dialog boxes, too. It is located above the tabs (you can move it below the ribbon as well.) As a default you are given the save, undo and redo buttons. To quickly add common buttons to it, you can click on the down arrow to the right of the bar. From the menu of choices you can click on any you want to add. For example, the open, save, e-mail, quick print are a few of them. If the one you want is not listed there, you can choose all commands from the bottom of that menu. There you will find a huge list of choices to add to your toolbar.

soon as possible. For Mimi, it was an opportunity to do something more. She knew she never wanted to work for someone else ever again; she wanted to be her own boss. She also wanted to create something that she knew the Charlotte area community needed and something that she had an extreme passion for that was empowering, positive, and that she could believe in with her heart and soul. A Movement Begins The first year was a tough one for Women With Know How, as most businesses incur difficulties in their inaugural year. There were no statistics, guides, or examples to show potential clients what the finished product would look like or what the potential success could be. The initial team behind Women With Know did not share the same vision as Mimi’s, which led her to do most of the grunt work herself. These factors

In Women With Know How’s second year, the company continued to improve in both client base and exposure/awareness. How what it has evolved into today. Throughout this issue you will learn more about the ideals, goals, and the motivation behind Women With Know How. We open our hearts to you and thank you for your acceptance, support, and your passion for Mimi’s vision! You now know this dream as Women With Know How. Mimi committed to herself and to her clients that she would not print something that she was not proud of or something that was under 50 pages. don’t advertise, people will forget about you or think you have gone out of business.“ What has truly taken Women With Know How to the next level is the eMagazine. In the past year, a transformation has taken place before our eyes and the difference between the first issue and the issue you see before you today is nothing short of astounding. The eMagazine was introduced to give readers another means to brand, market, showcase, and advertise their business while giving readers material, tips, and information to grow personally, professionally, spiritually and emotionally, directly from client’s

name and make a strong entrance in smaller outlying cities of the Charlotte, North Carolina, area while continuing to grow clients businesses. States Mimi, “Women With Know How is not just about selling our clients and gaining a profit, only to speak with them upon renewal; it is truly the love, support, and care that we have for our clients. It is about growing each others businesses, as well as growing our inner selves.” Over the past three years, Mimi has learned several lessons, the most important being, the kind of people she surrounds herself with. According to Mimi, “The

most valuable lesson in starting a business for me has been placing people on my team that have the same goals and aspirations. Otherwise, I would have failed.” The Emergence of a New Star and a Guiding Light Three years ago, Lea Ann Meech and Mimi Zelman were introduced at a networking function and an immediate chemistry was felt between them in their business ideals and goals for wanting to help women succeed in business. Their conversations over the years brought them closer, and eventually conversations turned into forming a networking group. Both had experienced frustrations about the process of networking that was going on in the city, especially regarding price, local relationships and connections, giving back locally, and the need to be surrounded by women with the same ideals and motivation for success. Women With Know How is proud to announce that Lea Ann Meech is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and together, Lea Ann and Mimi and their vision has become a true reality – Women With Know How Elite.

Elite’s mission is straightforward - to become the best, most distinguished and classic networking group of professional businesswomen who collectively and strategically dedicate themselves to personal and business development. Besides networking, Elite will offer more than business connections. There will be a member forum on www. womenwithknowhow.com to

seek advice, group coaching, mentoring, the ability to connect with fellow women business professionals, and the opportunity to give and receive exclusive discounts on products and services. The Road Travelled… Together The future is never too far away to set goals or to dream, and Mimi and Lea Ann are ramping up to take Women With Know How further than Charlotte, but not before Charlotte has an intense base of followers. Charlotte will be its number one focus, followed by expanding and spreading to other sections of the country. This will include the development of Charleston, South Carolina, once a successful system is firmly in place. “We are not rushing,” says Lea Ann. “We are doing things with intention and purpose. Mimi and I have a strong balance between us and we are taking careful steps to do things the right way.” Their character, will, and determination are strong, but Mimi and Lea Ann offer more – their compassion to help women develop to become what we all have inside of us. “I have had a second chance at life and I want people to learn how important every moment is,” says Lea Ann. “Life is only a vapor and we need to be

in the now. We need to be present in life!” Adds Mimi, “I couldn’t agree more! I want to create a legacy and I want to make an impact in Charlotte and beyond and I want to leave things better than when I found it.” Mimi and Lea Ann are committed to breathing new life into Charlotte, beyond the business world. In a time where time is almost a hindrance, they are making the most of their time to give back and make everyone around them stronger. Having had careers prior to Women With Know How, both Mimi and Lea Ann are creating a second chance for themselves to create something that is bigger than any one person. They are creating a movement of true love, acceptance, understanding and support for women. An Attitude of Gratitude On behalf of everyone at Women With Know How, I want to thank everyone for their readership, their support for and trust in our organization. We do what we do for our clients and our community. No matter the trials and tribulations, it is you, our clients, partners, and friends who are our support system and who make each and every day a journey of passion and excitement!

Elite: The Difference in Business and Personal Growth Elite will be a monthly networking and membership organization that will meet on the third Tuesday of every month at Villa Antonio’s on South Blvd. The kickoff event will be on January 19th, 2010. Elite is different than other networking organizations because it will truly be about being each other’s billboards for our businesses, an extended sales force of professional women, if you will. After attending dozens of different networking groups, meetings and organizations, Mimi and Lea Ann are confident that they are bringing the best assets of all organizations into one group: education, personal growth, quality relationships, and making the organization “all about we” not “all about me”!

Inner Artist You May Not Think You are Creative, But Guess Again!

With the New Year coming, we’re all thinking about new ways to fashion our lives so that we can be the best we can be, but sometimes we get so caught up in the mechanics of “how to be better” that we forget to nurture our creative sides. As women in business we definitely need to be balancing that checkbook and making sure we are increasing our client base, but we also need to nurture that inner artist who lives deep inside of us.

So what if you aren’t a Georgia O’Keefe or a Carol King or a Maya Angelou? You can still appreciate the arts, and that appreciation can nurture and help your own creativity to flower. Listed to the right are just a few ways to get those creative juices flowing. So, if you start to feel that you haven’t got a single decent thought or idea left in your head, remember this: you really are an artist, because you are creating a unique and beautiful masterpiece that no one else can work on - You!

Five Helpful Tips Here are some tips on how to get in touch with your own creativity:

1. Plan a trip to an art gallery. Charlotte is full of wonderful museums of art and small galleries

throughout the city. Take an afternoon off and check out what local artists in your area are up to. You may not believe this, but just going and looking at art helps you to look at your own life in a different way.

2. Check out the local music scene. Whatever kind of music you love, it’s here for the

listening. There are plenty of local restaurants and clubs that provide live music. In the summer, our parks are full of a wide variety of musical genres to choose from.

3. Join a book club. You may not be a writer, but you can be a reader. It’s a wonderful way to enrich your world, broaden your perspectives and get to know other like-minded women outside of the business setting.

4.

Buy crayons and a sketch pad. You could buy finger paints, too, if you don’t mind getting messy! When you’re feeling uninspired, pull out the pad and start doodling, just like you used to do when you were a child and were bored in class or were sending a note to a girlfriend. Just taking that break and working another area of your brain may help you unblock your thought processes and help you brainstorm more effectively.

5. Go out for a night of Karaoke. You might want to get a group of girlfriends together and spend an

evening pretending to be your favorite rock star. If that’s a little too public for you, take singing lessons, or join a local choir. You don’t even have to be able to read music to sing with a group.

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone say, “Oh, I’m not creative. I can’t sing a note, or draw a straight line, or write anything more than a grocery list.” So many people confuse creativity with being artistic, although I believe that we all have art and music and poetry in our fiber as human beings, if we only allow ourselves to develop those gifts.

The Five Essentials of Finding Your “Mind Time”

As a “woman with know how” and a caring heart, do you find yourself getting so involved with the minutiae of the day—work, family, friends and community projects—that you hardly set time aside for reviewing where you are heading? When was the last time you took time to think about your true purpose in life, and whether your goals or resolutions are in line with what really matters to you? Are you reaching for the stars, or settling for whatever comes your way? If you’re selling yourself short, you’re not alone. It takes clarity, commitment, effort, and

support to follow through with your dreams, along with a strong belief that you matter in this world and only you can create the life and business you want. Find Your Mind Time Getting organized is the cornerstone in finding time to focus on what really matters to you, your business and your relationships. Here are a few tips to help you organize your time into mind time. Give Yourself Permission. Like most women, putting time aside for ourselves is often combined with the guilt of using our time for “everything” else we need to do, usually for others. In order to find “mind time,” you need to give yourself permission that its critical for you, so you can truly make a difference. The goal is to change your mindset from martyr to self-preserver. Schedule the Time. An amazing tool that we

have and don’t use enough is scheduling. We’re really good at scheduling appointments with others and meeting deadlines that involve others, but how often do we schedule in time for ourselves as a commitment? Make it easy by telling yourself you are GOING to block out chunks of time (ex. 30 minutes) on your calendar to do some thinking and reflecting on what’s important to you, how you see your life in abundance, and how to start setting some fun goals. Get Away from Your Comfort Space. It’s way too easy to procrastinate about what you want to do but are afraid of tackling when you are surrounded by the space that creates work and challenges for you to focus on others. A great method is to plan to spend your thinking time away from your home or office. Go someplace where the only thing you focus on is what’s in your head. A library, coffee shop or someone else’s

Be Prepared. To get the most out of your “mind time” you need to be clued in on what you want to accomplish in that block of time. Have some questions you want to start answering, along with paper and pen to use as your tools for documenting your thoughts and next steps. If you need to do research, have a list of what you want to research. The more prepared you are with the physical elements, the easier it will be to get your mental game into action.

Get Support & Accountability. Some folks think easier on their own in order to be creative and allow information, new thoughts or ideas to flourish so that they can follow through with tasks. Others don’t know where to begin or fall prey to constant procrastination and end up dropping their goals or resolutions due lack of accountability. If you find yourself in that spot, let go of your excuses and find support. A trusted friend can help you by asking important questions to get you started on what goals are relevant to

January is the time to be Visionary

26

Over the coming year I will share with you areas of focus for each month. As you create your plan for success and work that plan, these suggestions will give you a clear focus for the month. Write down your goals, dreams and aspirations and look at them often. Writing them down brings them into the physical world and makes them tangible and real. As you consider areas on which to focus your attention this month, be sure to look at each area from your mental and emotional state, your physical well-being, your spiritual needs as well as your financial ones. The color for the month of January is green and the theme is “Becoming the Visionary.” It is the time to look to the future with positive thoughts and with objective eyes. Some of the areas to consider are listed below. The best day in January to write down your desires and wishes is the 15th. This is the day of the new moon which is considered the magical day for wishes to be expressed. Future Security When we think about future needs we need to look at

Handling Responsibility This includes self-discipline, acting like an adult, keeping commitments, feeling and being competent and your public image. Are there areas of your life in which you are more or less disciplined? Do you behave like the adult that you are? Do you honor your commitments? Do you feel competent in all areas of your life? Do you feel your public image reflects how you think and feel about yourself? Reaching Goals This includes ambitions, defining goals, using opportunities, your profession and hard work. What are your ambitions? How do you define your goals? Are you noticing and using each opportunity presented to you to its fullest extent? Do you love your job? How hard are you working toward your goals?

Success and Recognition This includes accomplishments, recognition, social status, and achieving goals. What have you accomplished in the past and what are your desires for the future? What type of recognition do you desire for your efforts? Are you comfortable with recognition? What social status changes would you like to make? How did you do on achieving your goals last year and what would you change this year? Management Skills This includes following protocol, delegating responsibility, being in charge, and earning and receiving respect. Do you follow protocol, and if so, are there situations when you don’t? How are you at delegating responsibility? Are you comfortable with being in charge or do you wish to be? Do you respect others and expect respect in return? Have you earned the respect of those around you? Authority Figures This includes bosses and other authority figures, fathers, tradition, and reputation. How is your relationship with your boss, your father, others? How do you feel about tradition? What is your reputation in the workplace, your place of worship, your home?

Releasing Controlling Tendencies This includes a lack of joy, sternness, fear of new approaches, pessimism, inflexibility, and selfjustification. When was the last time you felt joy? Are you too stern or not stern enough? Do you fear changing your approach to an old or new challenge? Do you consider yourself a pessimist or inflexible? Do you find yourself justifying your actions? As you create and work your plan this month take a look at yourself with objective eyes and include those areas where you need some work and celebrate the areas where you have done well. Life is a journey and one we are meant to learn and teach from. Every single experience we have, we are learning through and teaching from. Learn well and live in joy! January affirmation: I am the visionary for my greatest and highest good and I see that I have learned and taught through each challenge and each success. Print Buying

Saves You Money Smart Print Buying

January 2010 | The premier women’s business resource guide

How many of you dread this time of year, knowing that you are overdue in getting that new company brochure produced or direct mail campaign started? Or maybe you’re running out of business cards and letterhead. And cash flow is slow after the holidays, so you really have to keep your costs down.

28

Our company’s business focus is about using the right tools in your sandbox to conduct smart business, so here is a minitoolkit of tips and ideas about how to reduce costs and improve efficiency in how you purchase your printed materials.

folder of samples of printed materials that you like for any reason, whether it’s because of the paper, ink colors, design, size or whatever. When you’re ready to create and have printed your own items, you and the graphic artist and printer can refer to these to help you choose what’s right for your new print job.

2. Ask fellow business

owners or people you trust if they have had a good experience with a local printer, and then get their contact info. Then, email two or three printers and ask them to stop by and show you printed samples of work that is relevant to what you are planning to print.

3. When meeting with

printers, take notes about what you liked about the person, the company, their capabilities, the samples they show you, so you can remember your thoughts and perceptions.

4. When meeting with

printers, make sure that the person who comes to that information meeting will be the person who you would be working with at the printer. You don’t want to meet with that hotshot sales rep and then the day-to-day work is really done by some junior person.

specialize in different types of printing. Some are better at longer-run offset printing (typically 3,000 quantity and up). Some are excellent at small-run digital work (anywhere from 25 – several thousand). Others focus on large format like signs and banners. Remember that there’s no such thing as a “one stop shop” with printers, no matter how they market themselves to you. Make sure you are working with the right

printer supplier for the right job.

6. With today’s digital

printing capabilities, it doesn’t make sense to print large quantities of anything that may end up sitting around and then get outdated. A good rule of thumb is that if data or information contained in the print piece will need to get updated within 3-6 months, make sure you print the job digitally and then only print the small quantity you need.

7. Digital printing is

fast, relatively inexpensive due to minimal set-up fees, and 95% of the time, is the

best choice. Ask Sandbox Solutions which printing method is the smart choice for your next project.

8. Decide on a general

price range of what you can afford for your print project before you start designing it. A good professional graphic designer can help you attain the look and style you want within your budget.

9. Paper is a major

30

component of the printing costs, but can dramatically affect the look, feel and style of your finished piece. A bright white, super glossy stock can create a contemporary, high-tech image while a textured, uncoated linen paper can soften the images and message. Get paper stock suggestions from the graphic designer and the printer you select.

10. Remember that

photos “pop” on the coated gloss stocks more than any other stocks. If your design will include a lot of photos, choose a medium-quality gloss stock (called #3 or #4 in the industry) to keep costs down while still showing off your photography.

11. Get some free

“extras” when you get your materials printed. Did you know that when a printer prints something, there’s typically blank paper waste along the sides of the “parent sheet”. Use that blank paper to print

notepads, bookmarks, or other great marketing giveaways. Cool!

12. Reduce your

printing costs by designing marketing brochures in increments of four pages; 1 page, 4 pages, 8 pages, 12 or 16 pages, to get the most bang for your buck. Another way is to reduce the finished size slightly to 8.25 x 10.75 instead of the standard 8.5 x 11 format (no one will notice, we promise!)

printing costs by “ganging” your work so that your flyers, cards and other items all run at the same time on the press. Smart business isn’t child’s play, and smart print buying is the result of increasing your knowledge and understanding about printing. By using this mini-toolkit of ideas, and choosing the right supplier partners, you can reduce your printing costs…and take the “arrggh” out of the process. And that’s not child’s play! Simple Swaps for a Healthier

Whether you’re looking to shed a few pounds, lose a significant amount of weight, or just maintain a healthy weight, there are some changes that have to be made. But those changes don’t have to be overwhelming. are afraid that creating a healthier lifestyle will be too hard or too expensive, or that it will require too much time and effort.” But swapping one unhealthy food or habit for a better one is where it can all begin.

34

Small Steps “You don’t have to change everything at once — it begins with small, manageable steps,” says Forberg. You might swap a daily glass of fruit juice for a piece of whole fruit, she adds, or swap sandwich spreads for avocados. “Avocados have many nutrients,” says Forberg. One fifth of an avocado, about three slices (a typical serving), has only 50 calories and contributes nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds to your diet. With their good fats that support health, avocados serve as a great substitute for foods high in saturated fat. These mouthwatering recipes are a great way to make one simple swap — and get one step closer — to a healthier you. For more information and recipes, visit www. theamazingavocado.com.
