After obtaining his medical degree from Emory University in Atlanta and completing his residency in Chicago, Dr. Rouse returned to the south, joining Horizon Eye Care’s retina team in 1996. Dr. Rouse provides specialized medical and surgical treatment for the diseases of the retina and vitreous including diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, vascular abnormalities and macular diseases such as macular degeneration, macular holes, and macular pucker. Dr. Rouse also has a particular interest in infectious and non-infectious causes of uveitis. he universe is trying to tell me something. Last week while watching two different television shows, characters, both young and old, talked about how they needed to live in the present more. Later that night I read a book that reiterated that same point. As someone who generally divides her time between replaying the past (why didn’t I study more for my SATs and why didn’t I videotape my wedding?) and planning the future (I’m going to make sure the twins ace their SATs and DVR their weddings), I rarely spend much time in the present. My minister occasionally quotes the sage prophet Jimmy Buffett. One of his favorite Buffett tunes is called Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On. Here’s the line of that tune that really strikes me, “I bought a cheap watch from a crazy man floating down Canal. It doesn’t use numbers or moving hands. It always just says now.” Boy, do I need a watch like that. Instead I have an iPhone. While it’s a wonderful device that more than lives up to its reputation, it’s also wonderfully talented at stealing the present. More often than not I find myself checking e-mail or texts while something fantastic is going on right in front of me. I have no idea how fantastic that something is because I’m talking with Siri about the weather. 8
The present is a beautiful and mysterious thing. When we dwell in it, we can really enjoy the richness of life. As I write this, I’m sitting on the balcony of a vacation condo at the beach. No one else is up yet except the waves and a few committed joggers. It’s a pretty good office setup if you can get it. And it’s a pretty good place to start living in the now. This summer instead of trying to get a nice tan (with the use of proper sunscreen of course) or trying to find the perfect pair of sandals, I’m going to live in the now like never before. I’m going to savor every bite of ice cream without worrying about what it’s going to do to my waistline. I’m going to invite old and new friends over to play cards. And I’m going to put my iPhone down when I’m around other people — or a gorgeous sunset. Life is too short to waste living anywhere else but the present. That’s the one guaranteed place that we have. It’s here that we can appreciate the people, places and things that we love to the fullest extent. So this summer, I dare you to put your smartphone down and look at what’s around you. You might be surprised to find out just how rich you are. Happy summer!

Carol Stratton knows a thing or two about growing where you’re planted

Some might call Carol Stratton an expert at starting over. Though she now calls Mooresville home, Stratton has moved 22 times over 35 years. In her new book, Changing Zip Codes, she shares insight on adapting to change and making new friendships. Stratton, a freelance writer, says the idea for the book sprung from hearing other writers share their moving stories at a conference. “I saw a real need for helping people cope with moving,” she recalls. “There’s so much transition and change going on now, even for people in their 50s and 60s.” A motivational and inspirational speaker, Stratton credits her faith in God for helping her through each move and pushing her to encourage others experiencing moves. Whether it’s moving to a new state or around the block, Stratton encourages newcomers not to hole themselves up in their homes unpacking every box. Instead, she advises spending time outside meeting people before neighbors forget someone moved in. “Hit it hard while you have the adrenaline rush,” she says. “If you’re depressed, it helps you feel better about your time.” A mom of four grown children, Stratton says a positive attitude is key to successful transitions. “Sometimes you don’t find best friends immediately, as not everyone has 10

Zucchini Fritters with Pine Nut Dipping Sauce from the Hands-On Cooking Series at Wooden Stone Gallery with Personal Chef Vera Samuels Ingredients for Fritters 1 pound small zucchini 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon Spanish paprika 2 tablespoons milk Kosher salt 2 large eggs Canola oil (for frying) Instructions • Cut zucchini in 1/4-inch diagonal slices. • Place flour and paprika on a plate and mix together. • Beat the eggs and milk together in a large bowl. • Add zucchini slices to the flour mixture and toss until well coated. Shake off excess. • Heat oil in a large, heavy-bottom skillet to a depth of 1/2 inch. • Dip zucchini slices one at a time into the egg mixture and fry in single layer batches for two minutes or until crisp and golden brown. • Remove zucchini fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat until all zucchini has been fried. • Serve fritters piping hot, lightly sprinkled with kosher salt. Serve with pine nut sauce. Ingredients for sauce 2/3 cup pine nuts 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon of chopped flat-leaf parsley Kosher salt & pepper 1 garlic clove, peeled 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions • Place pine nuts and garlic in a food processor and process to form a pureé. • With motor still running, gradually add the olive oil, lemon juice and water to form a smooth sauce. • Stir in the parsley, and season to taste with salt and pepper. • Transfer to a serving bowl and reserve until needed.

That was in 2007. Now Going Coastal Outfitters presented by The OhanaKey Company sells its goods in beach shops in North and South Carolina, as well as Florida. A few months ago, the family launched a store on the Web. “It’s like a one-stop beach shop,” explains Shelia. “We just want everything to be really unique, stuff that you’re not going to find everywhere.” The site carries beach designs by the Brumlow family, as her sons, Avery and Eric, are involved with the business. “It really helps me and my family connect,” says Shelia. “The creative side is phenomenal, even down to when I do the printing and embroidering. I love picking out the colors. I can sit there and look at thread for hours.” The company offers hats and shirts that read “Going Coastal” and “I’m in a flip-flop state of mind,” as well as beach towels, jewelry, Solartents, and wooden maps of Lake Norman and other bodies of water. Going Coastal also has a relationship with Sea to Shore Alliance, as 3 percent of each sale is donated to the Florida-based non-profit conservation organization. “We wanted to give back to the environment and ocean,” says Shelia, adding that she graduated from Manatee High School in Florida. Shelia says there’s no limit to what the company can offer. “This can go on forever,” she says. “It just goes to show that you can make a living doing something that’s really fun.” — Lori K. Madeline Baucom and Enza Friedman take Maddy’s Fatty’s to the next level in Cornelius Revenge never tasted as sweet as it does for Madeline Baucom and her sister-in-law, Enza Friedman, who opened Maddy’s Fatty’s bakery in Cornelius in May after a year of operating the bakery from Baucom’s home kitchen.

In her childhood, Baucom was teased for her weight, and the shop name helps remove the sting of the words by giving them new life. “We’re a bakery, but it’s so much more than that,” Baucom explains. “It’s a way to show people that we can do this. We really feel good about this whole venture.” The bakery offers gourmet cupcakes, cakes, pastries, pies, cookies and fresh handmade breads. Custom designed cakes, 3D-carved cakes, gourmet cake balls, gourmet cheesecakes, and groom and wedding cakes round out the offerings. “The lovely thing about being able to start our business at home is that we tried to iron out all our wrinkles and do the majority of testing at the home,” Friedman says. “We feel we’re ready to move to the next level, and we’ve perfected all our recipes.” Maddy’s Fatty’s uses cage-free and hormonefree eggs from Rooster Hill Farms in China Grove
and offers products that are reduced sugar, gluten free, dairy free and vegan. It sells nut-free products but is not a completely nut-free bakery. The bakery supports The Foundation for Respect Ability, a local anti-bullying group. They encourage college students, teens, book clubs and others to gather in the shop, which offers Wi-Fi. ReStore ReStyle 2012 Design Challenge

On May 1 Mooresville ReStore hosted the ReStore ReStyle 2012 Design Challenge. This is the second year for the event, which featured eight interior designers competing to see who could design the most amazing room by repurposing ReStore merchandise. Tina Goins of Stix and Stones Interiors won the Judge’s Choice Best Room award, while Kerrie Boys won the People’s Choice Best Room award. Joan Higginbotham, Jennifer Marion-Mills and Starr Miller served as the judges. All proceeds from the evening benefited Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.

The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation held its 3rd Annual Catwalk for a Cause event on May 16 at MTJ Motorsports in Mooresville. The event sold out; as guests enjoyed a New York-style runway show presented by Lavendar, Avalilly’s and Fresh Boutiques. The show benefits the Martin Truex Jr. Special Needs Fund created at Levine Children’s Hospital in 2011. The fund helps patients and families of children being treated at Levine who need assistance in paying for medically necessary services, supplies and special programs. The highlight of the evening was watching the children who directly benefit from the fund walk the catwalk to raise money for their own cause. The event, which raised $30,000 for the fund, also featured a silent auction and raffle.

sed to be that Historic Rural Hill was mainly associated with Loch Norman Highland Games in April. These days the Huntersville historic site buzzes with activity pretty much year round. From The First Footin’ Hike in January to the North Carolina Brewers & Music Festival in May to the Sheep Dog Trials and Dog Festival in November, something is always going on. A lot of that activity can be attributed to 29-year-old Jeff Fissel who’s been the

executive director at Historic Rural Hill since November 2010. We recently talked with him about how Rural Hill has come to life in recent years.
How did you discover this position? I was a business major at Appalachian State University. After graduation I worked at Bank of America in corporate investment banking and business analytics, and I saw the financial crisis take place up close. I left there and was
working in events and operations at Charlotte Country Club when I was approached by Ed McLean [executive director of Rural Hill at the time] about the job. They were looking for someone who had a business background, which I had, and someone who understood events, which I did. They also wanted someone who had an appreciation for local history, and I’ve always been a big history buff. It’s kind of a weird mix of things. It’s a historic site first and foremost, so www.LNCurrents.com
you at least have to have an appreciation and the knowledge of local history. It [Rural Hill] was in the Davidson Family for six generations from 1760 to 1992.
worked out really well. Mecklenburg County had their two biggest years in the history of doing it at Rural Hill. We kind of take that to mean that people really like coming here.
Are you from this area?
What attracted you to this job? What are your personal goals for the site?
I was born in Colorado, but I graduated from high school at North Mecklenburg. I call Huntersville home. My wife, Carey, and I bought a house in Huntersville when I took this job.
Rural Hill has a pretty extensive strategic plan. Is part of that making the site more visible? Even going to high school in Huntersville, I wasn’t that familiar with the site, which I’m embarrassed to say. I found that more and more too many people for whatever reason had never ventured out here and didn’t know what was going on. A lot of people had heard of us but had not been here before. They knew of the Scottish Festival, which is a huge undertaking and an unbelievable event and the Amazing Maize Maze, which is another wonderful event. And they knew about the dog trials, which is a smaller event, but still a lot of fun. A lot of the people who were coming here were the same people, and that’s great because we love repeat business, but we also had to get out and make the rest of Charlotte and Huntersville and Lake Norman know what was going on. We figured the best way to do that would be to host some different events that would help with the revenue here, and being a non-profit we always need funds to do what we’re doing — to preserve the history and do the educational programs. So we thought, let’s try a few new things. That’s how it started.
We now host Bark in the Park, Warrior Dash and North Carolina Brewers & Music Festival and some other events. Bark in the Park started in South Charlotte and then it was being done at the Metrolina Expo. Rural Hill was a more natural fit for a dog event. I think it’s www.LNCurrents.com

that’s here and educate people on that. Also, to show people a good time with the events that we do and the things that we host. Rural Hill is hopefully on most people’s radars now, and they’re interested in coming out. We don’t expect everybody to come to every event, but at least they can find something throughout the course of the year that interests them and have a good time. LNC

Andy Santerre explains how Shige Hattori’s global vision is growing a team

new team has quickly found its way to the winner’s circle in NASCAR’s K&N East Series, and their winning formula is a bit different than what you might expect to see. Meet Shigeaki Hattori, former driver, dedicated team owner and race team visionary. In only a few months, he has built a winning team by forming strategic partnerships and harnessing international excitement and interest in American motorsports. “Shige is almost like an international ambassador for the sport,” says Andy Santerre, fourtime NASCAR K&N Pro Series East points champion, former competition director with Revolution Racing under NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program and race team manager at Hattori Racing Enterprises in Mooresville. “I think the biggest thing he has going for him is his understanding of how the interest in racing extends to places like Japan. He has a great knowledge and sees how interested the Japanese people are in our NASCAR and knows how to include them in the puzzle of running a team.” Hattori’s racing resume spans two continents 22
and multiple series. After earning the 1994 Formula Toyota title in Japan, Hattori moved to the United States where he competed in the Indy Lights and IndyCar Series. He also raced in the Toyota Atlantic Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series before the K & N Pro Series caught his eye. With the goal of giving young drivers the opportunity to develop their skills under the tutelage of an experienced staff, Hattori Racing Enterprises took root in 2009. And shortly after the new year began, Hattori Racing had a staff, race shop and two new cars in development. This year marks the first full season that Hattori Racing is competing in a full series schedule with its own cars and team. “When we opened our doors in January, we didn’t have a wrench, jack or tractor trailer,” explains Santerre. “Our building was completely empty, so we had to reach out to grab as much as we could just to get going.” One of the first places Hattori and Santerre turned for assistance was Mooresville’s NASCAR Technical Institute. The HRE cars
needed engines, and both men knew a partnership with NTI would be mutually beneficial. Santerre knew the NTI students would benefit from watching the engines they built compete throughout the season, and Hattori Racing would power their machines with spec engines built to his exact standards. “It’s a pretty neat partnership because this is part of the kids’ schoolwork. They get to put the engines together, and they get to follow the car they power as it races ,” says Santerre. “It’s a great morale booster for the kids who can say they built an engine that won a NASCAR race, and for us, the partnership saves us money and time and gives us peace of mind.” Hattori’s unique cross-cultural exchange program also differentiates it from other teams in the sport. The program objective is to bridge the gap between Japan and American auto cultures. During the 2012 racing season, Hattori Racing will play host to more than 120 guests from Japan, including nearly a dozen Toyota- trained mechanics who are spending week-long internships alongside their American counterparts learning motorsport specific skills to bring back to Japan. “Specifically, people like mechanics and engineers in Japan can learn so much about the sport from us,” Santerre says. “Shige is connected enough to go to their bosses overseas and say, ‘If you help sponsor a car then we will bring your people here to work with us for a week.’ Because of Shige, you are seeing new kinds of sponsors on cars and new talent being developed.” How is Hattori’s formula working? In only its third outing, Hattori Racing scored its first win in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East with Brett Moffitt behind the wheel. “For me, I love the K&N Series, and I’m glad we are starting where we are,” says Santerre. “But knowing Shige and his love for the team and passion to grow the sport, I’m guessing he might be eying something bigger down the road.” LNC Freelance writer Mike Savicki has lived and worked in the Lake Norman area for 15 years, frequently covering the racing scene.

Laura Woodall’s courage fuels A Giving Spirit Foundation
A
t 40 years old, Davidson resident Laura Woodall has stared down the face of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and come to a few realizations. She wants to live a long life. She wants to keep the focus on the three most powerful individuals in her life — her husband, John, and her two daughters, Abigail (11) and Amelia (13). And she wants to help support the families who might be experiencing the financial hardships of an unforeseen illness. It is sheer determination and the support of friends and family that help Woodall achieve these goals on a daily basis.

Learning to Let Go After receiving her diagnosis in February 2006, Woodall made the choice to maintain her physical strength and put a young mother’s face on ALS. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain
to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. “For the first four years I did acupuncture,

strength training and massage therapy,” says Woodall, who now communicates using an eyetracking technology that creates an all-in-one computer access. Through her computer she has speech-generation capabilities, can perform computer tasks via e-mail and word processing, and can access the Internet. In the past three years, she has found it necessary to receive assistance in communication and walking. “Life for my family has changed,” she says. “We have learned to be more patient.”
Putting a Face on ALS In 2007 Woodall formed “Laura’s League,” a group of 24 moms, and walked with the women and her husband in the MDA “Stride and Ride” event. Together, the group raised more than $100,000. “It was out of those efforts that friends of ours approached us about starting a foundation to provide assistance towards our family, because living with ALS can be costly,” says Woodall. In 2008, several of the family’s close friends

formed A Giving Spirit Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. In 2011, AGSF awarded more than $22,000 to deserving grant recipients, with $2,550 being the average grant amount. AGSF provides financial assistance to mothers living in the greater Charlotte area suffering from a debilitating disease. The need-based grants involve applications asking about current financial situations and financial issues.. In addition to providing grants to families in need, AGSF supports Project ALS and the North Carolina chapter of The ALS Association, according to Lisa Bynum, board chairman for AGSF and a longtime friend of Woodall’s. “We typically hold an annual event that raises the majority of the funds,” says Bynum. “We have recently set up a page on www.crowdrise. com where supporters can create fundraisers and raise money for AGSF. For example, two supporters raised almost $5,000 through Crowdrise when they created a fundraiser around running the SouthPark Racefest half marathon.” Last month, several local businesses donated percentages of their sales on pre-determined days to AGSF.

It is Woodall’s hope that the foundation continues to provide grants to help families pay their power bills, pay the rent or buy groceries — all things that can be a struggle when the majority of a family’s funds goes toward surgeries, treatments or medical supplies. Bonefish Grill dives into the Lake Norman community

utside the newly opened Bonefish Grill in Birkdale Village sits a massive silver dog bowl filled to the rim with water. The bowl serves as a signal of the restaurant’s commitment to fit into the Lake Norman and Birkdale communities, where dog walkers are legend. “We try to be extremely involved in the community,” says managing partner Jordan Biel, who moved to Mooresville from Baton Rouge with his wife and two children to open and operate the restaurant. “We strive for consistency, but at the same time we try to have the local feel. Birkdale itself is its own community. We want to be good neighbors.”

Locally flavored Bonefish Grill opened on May 7, following a charity event two days before that raised $8,500 for The Peninsula Community Foundation, which supports local non-profits. Its opening brings the ZAGAT award-winning market-fresh fish and seafood and other wood-grilled specialties Bonefish Grill is known for. Seafood is paired with signature sauces, including the warm mango salsa; lemon butter; Pan Asian, which is a sweet Asian glaze with a bed of sautéed spinach and a drizzle of wasabi cream; and the Chimichurri sauce, made with 34

extra virgin olive oil, Italian parsley and flavored with garlic and red pepper. The dishes come with distinctive toppings as well. “We like all the differentiating flavors,” Biel explains. Chops and handheld and starter dishes including ahi tuna sashimi, Mussels Josephine (PEI) and American-style Kobe beef burgers provide other options. The dessert list tempts with Jen's Jamaican Coconut Pie, a flourless Macadamia Nut Brownie with raspberry sauce and vanilla ice cream, key lime pie, and Crème Brûlée. The bar stocks local craft beers, including brews from NoDa Brewing Company, The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Foothills Brewing. Guests can choose from a varied wine list as well as handcrafted cocktails with fresh garnishes and muddled ingredients. For every Ocean Trust Martini sold, $1 is donated to Ocean Trust, an award-winning ocean conservation foundation. Every Wednesday is Bang Wednesday, when Bonefish’s signature Bang Bang Shrimp — tender crispy shrimp tossed in a creamy, spicy sauce — is available for $5.

appreciate the restaurant’s commitment to fresh food and its polished, casual atmosphere. Biel strives for a setting in which guests in shorts and sandals are just as comfortable as those who have ordered a five-course meal and a bottle of wine. “People are laid back here,” he says. “They’re very accepting and very easy going.” Vicki Shallish, who works at The House of Olives in Birkdale Village, welcomes the restaurant. “I think Bonefish is going to be a huge asset to our area,” Shallish says. “They have wonderful food. When we went, our server was remarkable. She had a great way with us and was very knowledgeable.” To prepare the staff for opening, trainers from across the country came to the restaurant to share a six-day training regimen with the local team. The staff, referred to as Anglers, learned about the wines, the service standards and the food. “It’s not only waiting tables, it’s sharing knowledge,” Biel says. “We have a lot of intense training to make sure you have that 100 percent dining experience.”

The Anglers attended what the restaurant calls Fish Camp, where they learned about factors that affect the flavor of fish, such as the depths the fish swim, what they eat and from where they come. Norwegian salmon that swim in cold waters have a buttery flavor, for example, while fast-swimming tuna have a meaty texture. “It’s texture, and it’s flavor,” Biel says. “We like to feature different fish, things that people don’t normally have, such as monkfish, wolf fish and orange roughy.” When Birkdale Village resident Denise Housler visited, she enjoyed Lily’s Chicken with goat cheese, spinach, artichoke hearts and lemon basil sauce, which she describes as amazing. “The service was spectacular,” Housler recalls. “We are so excited to have another option. It has a casual feel and great atmosphere, and the music was perfect.” The patio where guests can sit and watch people stroll by also appeals to Housler. “We love to be able to sit outside,” she says. The 4,400-square-foot space includes a

renache is a grape that gets easily lost in a crowd; kind of like a John Doe of grapes. It’s a grape that you probably think you’ve never tasted even though it’s a good bet that you have. The grape is at its most splendid in a couple of blended wines, one from France and one from Spain. Although, more and more, it’s popping up in wines where it struts its stuff alone in a great solo performance. Wines made from the Grenache grape scream out to be paired with food. They’re a joy to sip on all by themselves, but it’s with food that you really get the best out of them. Grenache wines are often described using the term, “rustic”. And that leads me to a pet peeve. It irks me disturbingly when people use terms such as rustic and don’t take any steps to define what they mean. Like you’re supposed to know. It’s almost as if it’s some kind of verbal secret handshake known only to true wine nerds.

SOME LIKE IT HOT Grenache is a grape that likes heat, and it gets plenty of it in the southern Rhône. The sun beats down all day, and the grapes just soak it up. Then the soil comes into play. Actually, you rarely see soil here. What you see are fields of large pebbles that were ground into shape by glaciers many years ago. They’re called galets. These guys

LET’S GET “RUSTIC” What “rustic” means is that the wine has a slightly rough edge to it. That sounds pejorative, but it isn’t. Some people do use rustic as a put down to describe wines they find lacking in the fruitiness that might somehow make them more easily drinkable. But, in my world, rustic is a good thing. Rustic wines may have some quirks or rough edges, but they also have a certain undeniable charm. To me, this makes them a standout, particularly in the face of pasteurized, homogenized wines with a lowest-commondenominator style. Character beats blandness every time. Rustic wines are both complex and deep; they’re just not smooth and elegant. They can be, perhaps, best defined by what they are not — these wines are the antithesis of refined. I love them, especially with peasant food; another, seemingly, pejorative description. Foods like roasted chicken or a hearty stew are great with these wines. In France, Grenache is the main grape used in the wines from the southern Rhône region. The big boy in this region is the great wine, Châteauneuf du Pape. The more affordable wine from the region is called Côtes du Rhône. Both these wines are a blend of many grapes but, in both cases, it’s Grenache that is the predominant varietal. A little wine geek fact, these wines are often termed, GSM wines. GSM denotes the three main varietals in the wine — Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Another little bit of geeky stuff, Châteauneuf du Pape can have up to 13 grapes in its blend, some of them white. When you look at the deep, almost inky color of the wine, it’s hard to see where the white grapes fit in. What they’re there for is to smooth out the rough edges (smooth out some of the rustic side) of the red grapes that make up the blend. Châteauneuf du Pape wines have a great nose of rich, ripe fruits and aromas of Provence. There’s a definite background of Provençal undergrowth; rosemary and lavender, but the blending smoothes the rough undergrowth out. The flavors are silky and juicy, quite rich and ripe; lots of deep black fruit.

also soak up the sun during the day and then radiate it back out during the night, keeping the grapes cozy and warm. At first look you would be tempted to think that nothing could grow here among a bunch of rocks. But grapevines are a pretty tough breed, as they can grow almost anywhere. A winemaker once told me that if a grapevine were an animal it would be a goat. That about sums it up.
ROCK ON LITTLE GRAPE BUDDY Journey west, across the Pyrenees, and you’re in northeastern Spain, in a wine region called Priorat. The grape is called Garnacha in Spain. Here again, it’s very hot. And, here again, the soil is nasty — those rocks again. The landscape is downright lunar. Instead of the attractive galets of Rhône you have what the local Catalans call ‘Llicorella.’ Llicorella is volcanic in origin. The soil is nothing but crumbled rock with no apparent nutrients.

In France, Grenache is the main grape used in the wines from the southern Rhône region. The big boy in this region is the great wine, Châteauneuf du Pape.
It’s red and black slate with small particles of mica. This turns out to be useful because it both reflects sunlight and conserves heat. The topsoil is formed of decomposed slate and mica. Nasty stuff, but great for grapevines. Grenache/ Garnacha is definitely a rock star. From this lunar landscape come some beautiful wines. Priorat wines are expressive and fresh. They are very vibrant wines with a pile of complexity. They are soft and oaky on the nose. There’s a bundle of fruit — blackberry, strawberry and cherry — and there are subtle notes of honey, vanilla and a little smokey background. And there’s a long finish of cherry and maybe some cocoa. Wow, this is a wine to have a deep conversation with. We’re starting to see more Grenache coming out of California. There’s a group out there that calls themselves the Rhône Rangers. Their goal is to produce wines in the Rhône style. A noble quest if ever there was one. There are blends that come close to Châteauneuf du Pape. There are some great Syrahs that come close to wines from the northern Rhône. And there are an increasing number of Grenache wines. All of this is where the fun comes in. It’s a blast to compare the different styles of wines and see which is more to your taste. But, sometimes, that seems to me to be comparable to picking out my favorite grandchild — they’re all gorgeous, by the way. The same thing with all these wines. Great to taste and great to make friends with. Enjoy. LNC

aren Palacios-Jansen turns on the camera in her home golf and fitness studio before beginning one of her weekly online training classes. Armed with medicine balls, hand weights, therabands and a customized, shortened, golf training club, she positions herself in front of the camera and prepares to lead her cyber students through the hour-long session. Her goal is to improve not only their golf game but also their overall fitness levels. Jansen’s golf fitness program is called Cardiogolf, and as more and more PGA and LPGA pros sing the praises of this type of training, the mainstream golf public is following suit thanks largely to what Jansen has been teaching for years. Golf fitness “In the past 10 years, you have seen Tour players begin to exercise more and more,” 42
explains Palacios-Jansen, a Mooresville resident, Golf Performance Specialist, AFAA certified personal trainer and member of the Nike Golf Advisory Staff. “Tiger [Woods] was the one who really introduced everyone to golf fitness, and now you see pretty much every golfer working with a trainer who helps with everything from stretching and warm-up to cooling down after a round. A growing number of pros, especially the younger guys, are bringing trainers with them on the road, and as this type of thinking gains acceptance, the mainstream golf public is slowly beginning to follow suit.” Jansen, who got the idea for Cardiogolf while working with golfers at Miami’s Doral Golf Resort in 1997, says the idea grew out of one student’s desire to stay active and improve on the skills he learned from her during the times of the year when he wasn’t on
the course. “I would spend the winter teaching golfers everything from stretching and conditioning to specific exercises that would improve their swing techniques, and when the ones vacationing from the North left me, they’d return home and wouldn’t touch their clubs again until at least the spring. So much of what they learned was either lost or forgotten,” she explains. “One golfer called and asked if I could send him a tape with exercises and drills that he could use to practice, and as I brainstormed about what to send, that’s where I got the idea for Cardiogolf.” The idea behind Cardiogolf is that a golfer breaks the year into distinct phases and trains for both golf and general health accordingly. techniques with modern sport science. “Traditional thinking preached that you needed to be stronger to generate more club head speed, but it really begins with flexibility,” the 2008 LPGA Teacher of the Year explains. “And to train for golf, you want to do exercises that create long, lean muscles. This creates a bigger range of motion that allows you to make a bigger swing arc and with a bigger swing arc, you can generate more club head speed.” Jansen says the average male golfer generates approximately a 90 mph club head speed, and the average female tops out at between 8085 mph. Of Cardiogolf ’s many benefits, Jansen believes a golfer might add between five to 10 mph to their swing while also fine-tuning and ingraining the correct mechanics of the swing. “Cardiogolf is about creating balance, stability, core strength and good habits,” she adds. “If you compare a one-hour class to one hour of hitting balls on the range for example, in the class you are swinging the club on and off more in the hour than you would be just hitting balls, plus you are getting the benefit of building a sound swing versus repeating the same habit over and over alone on the range.” Cardiogolf can be tailored to golfers of all ages and abilities, but Jansen says two main

or architect Roger Layman, the dream client isn’t one who remains seen and not heard. “Collaborating with my clients — that’s what I love to do,” he says. Layman found the perfect creative partner in Davidson homeowner, Jane Copeland, when she and husband, Shawn, hired him to plan the renovation of their 1943 post-war cottage. And if winning first place in the Whole House Remodel category (in the Lake Norman Home Builders’ Association Best of the Lake 2011) is any indicator, their collaboration worked like a charm.
Room to breathe The Copelands bought their home five years ago, when they relocated from Richmond, Virginia to be closer to family. While previous owners had done considerable work to the 2,150-squarefoot, post-war cottage (including updating the original kitchen and adding a master suite), the Copelands, the third www.LNCurrents.com
family to own the home, wanted to do even more. They hired Layman, owner of Roger Layman Architecture in Davidson, who had previously remodeled Jane’s sister’s home up the street; but the recession caused the Copelands to lay their plans aside for a time. When they came back to the project in 2011, they edited the plans, simplifying their vision and unknowingly turning a good thing into a great one. Jane, who grew up in Charlotte, was clear about her main goals: add muchneeded living and bedroom space to the home, allow the space to breathe by raising ceilings and open up the layout, relaxing the chopped up feeling of the small rooms — all while preserving the original essence (what she calls “the story”) of the house. Layman gladly obliged, expertly re-

He’s so proud, in fact, that he suggested that his students’ artwork be displayed on the walls of the Town of Davidson Town Hall from June 15 through June 29. “He [Kerr] really wanted to have his students recognized for their work, so he asked that we put on an exhibit for them,” explains Colleen Whaleen, recreation program supervisor for the Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation. Kerr, an accomplished artist, has been teaching a watercolor class for the Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation for almost six years. This is the second year of the show titled The Beautiful World of Watercolor Student Art Exhibit. Whaleen says that last year’s show attracted almost 200 people and featured some 60 pieces. This year’s exhibit will feature a collection of student and instructor artwork mostly focused on landscapes, lighthouses, florals and portraits. Several of the students are new to watercolor and others have been students of Kerr’s for years. Kerr looks at the exhibit as a way to show the potential of anyone with a desire to learn art. “I think it’s important to recognize the artists for their work and the time that they put in,” says Whaleen. “We’ll have a reception on Friday [June 15]. It will be a good way for the artists to share this with their families. It’s a great community event. The community can all gather to recognize the work of these artists.” — Lori K. George Peterson is known for telling a story
alk into the Cornelius Public Library during story time, and you’ll hear little voices calling out the name “George.” It’s not Curious George that they’ve come to see. It’s George Peterson. The 35-year-old father of two children leads story time for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. He also does programs for kindergartners and first graders at Cornelius and J.V. Washam elementary schools. Peterson began his career at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library at the circulation desk, but a superior recommended that he move to the children’s area. “It was my blessing in disguise. She saw something I wasn’t sure I saw myself,” recalls Peterson. Story time is an integral part of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s commitment to early literacy. “Sharing 10 to 15 minutes of reading time each day with kids, especially in the early stages, is so fundamental,” explains Peterson. Peterson says it is important for parents to make reading to kids a fun experience. “I like to incorporate silliness into it, and I like to do voices.” Peterson also encourages parents to share the books they enjoyed reading from their childhood with their children. Watching his story time children grow is the most rewarding part of Peterson’s job. “They come in scared and nervous,” he says. “Throughout the years, they start singing our Open Shut Them song and having conversations with me.” LNC
