We are excited to present our monthly Volunteer Guide! Find volunteer opportunities, new projects and events, fresh ideas and old wisdom on giving back. We look forward to helping you Connect, Spark Change, and Spread Kindness.

! s r e k a m e g n a h C L L A Calling Spark the Change Colorado’s mission is to SPARK CHANGE and INSPIRE A MOVEMENT OF GOOD through the power of volunteerism, service, and civic engagement. This Monthly Volunteer Guide is designed to help you find your passion, a place to serve, a movement to join or the inspiration and courage to start a movement of your own! We encourage you to find a place for constructive, healing dialogue and turn those conversations into building a connected, resilient and healthy community. Now, more than ever, non-profits need your help to continue to provide our communities with a variety of important services. We have all had to change how we do our day to day, including making sure that our work places are safe for you to offer your help and your efforts are effective. That can mean some volunteer positions you may be used to have changed to be socially distanced, some have gone virtual, or some are no longer available. This guide is full of places where you are still needed! Please check directly with the organization you are most interested in helping if you have questions about volunteering for them during this pandemic. 2

It’s our job to recruit, connect and recognize those in our community who lead, inspire and are at the heart of the volunteer movement.

m A I t c e j o r P : s s e n d n i K f o r a e AY For this month's Year of Kindness Story, we'd like to share about Project I Am. Project I Am, a 501c3 non-profit organization, was created by 8year-old Jahkil Naeem Jackson. Jahkil, now 13, has a heartfelt desire to help those in need. After helping his aunt distribute food to the Chicago homeless, he knew that he wanted to do more to make a difference. It quickly became Jahkil’s mission to build awareness of homelessness and to help the homeless population by offering them what he calls “Blessing Bags,” a giveaway filled with wipes, socks, deodorant, hand sanitizer, granola bars, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bottled water, and more. Jahkil Jackson has set and surpassed many goals in his young life. Distributing his Blessing Bags to the homeless has been one of his biggest achievements thus far. In just a few years, Jahkil’s efforts have impacted 50,000 men, women and children across the world. Jahkil was acknowledged as one of three influential people of 2017 by President Barack Obama and the Obama Foundation.

! t h g i l t o p S r e b m e M In Honor of Women's History Month, we'd like to recognize and learn about some of our members who support the women in our communities who need it the most.

Womxn's March Denver About Womxn’s March Denver: Womxn's March Denver began at the end of 2016 and has continued to be a community based advocacy organization. Womxn’s March Denver is a local, 501(c)3 organization and is 100% powered by volunteers. Our mission is to be a collective of womxn committed to amplifying marginalized voices in the movement to end sexism, oppression, and injustice. Through community engagement, protest, education, and leadership, we leverage our platform to ignite action. Over the years tens of thousands of marchers have come together to raise their voices. In 2021 we will be focusing our efforts on how to best support women, and especially women of color and other marginalized communities, that have been severely impacted by COVID19. We are all aware of the equal pay inequities already placed on women, but through the pandemic more women have been thrown into economic insecurity than ever before. We will also be continuing the conversation around healthcare access for women and what does that mean for our futures. We will continue to speak out in support of Artist: Ashley Lukashevsky Ashluka social justice. Our online events for 2021 will focus on how we as a community can do the necessary work to ensure we dismantle systemic racism, transphobia, and sexism. 14

COVID-19 Response: We were all thrown into a virtual world between March 2020 to present day. So how do we still march, without an actual march? Womxn’s March Denver hosted community engagement panels online between May and August 2020. The larger conversation going on in our community around social justice took center stage. We sought to uplift the voices of womxn who were impacted by the reckoning our community was having in response to the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbrey, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and far too many others. At the conclusion of the summer of 2020, Womxn’s March Denver hosted the #Vote2Vent campaign, which focused on efforts to get out to vote. We worked with community leaders and partner organizations to support voter registration efforts, shared different ways to vote via our social media platforms, and encouraged our community to utilize their vote as a way to empower change. 15

Opportunities to Get Involved: The March is typically hosted in January, and we were unable to do so safely this year. Instead Womxn’s March Denver hosted an all day, interactive event on Inauguration Day. Our #MotivationMural depicted how our community felt motivated by seeing the first woman of color be inaugurated as the Vice President of the United States. We now need your help to put those words of motivation into action. We are currently seeking volunteers to support our digital presences. We have opportunities to get engaged as a volunteer through website management, special online event support, and social media assistance. If you are interested or know someone interested in supporting Womxn’s March Denver, please contact Suzie Schuckman at Suzie@WomxnsMarchDenver.org. ! t h g i l t o p S r e b m e M The Gathering Place About The Gathering Place: Founded in 1986, The Gathering Place is the only daytime drop-in center in metropolitan Denver that serves women, transgender individuals, and their children who are experiencing poverty, many of whom are also experiencing homelessness. We are a community of safety and hope where positive relationships, choice, and essential resources transform lives. While we refer to those we serve as “members” to emphasize the importance of being members of our community, no fees are ever charged for our programs or services. Members of The Gathering Place have access to three meals per day, showers, laundry, toiletries, mail service, a nap room, locker storage, computers, telephones, clothing resources, a food pantry, physical and mental health support, and an extensive array of resources and referrals. We also provide opportunities for personal growth through our education and job readiness, peer recovery, and case management programs. COVID-19 Response: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, The Gathering Place has been involved in the effort to keep people experiencing poverty and homelessness safe and healthy. In partnership with the City and County of Denver, we expanded our services to two sites for the first time by staffing daytime operations for a 24/7 Auxiliary Shelter serving women and transgender adults. The Auxiliary Shelter provides more shelter beds for women and transgender individuals in the city, increased protection from COVID-19 with individual rooms for each guest, and strong support and stability during the pandemic. 18

Additionally, visits to our food pantry increased by 55% in 2020 from the same period in 2019. We typically offer a shopping model food pantry where members can choose their groceries but we quickly pivoted to pre-assembled food bags to increase accessibility and safety. Members still have the choice between bags with items to prepare meals and bags that have snack items. With many community centers, churches, and schools still closed, The Gathering Place is providing meals and food bags to thousands of members each month.

Opportunities to Get Involved: The Gathering Place is in need of dedicated volunteers to help operate all of our programs and services. Our main location is open Monday through Friday and has volunteer opportunities between the hours of 8:30am-5:00pm. The Auxiliary Shelter is open every day of the week and has volunteer opportunities between the hours of 8:00am-4:00pm. We ask that volunteers make a commitment to volunteer for the same shift weekly for a minimum of three months to ensure consistency in our staffing and scheduling. Visit our website to learn more about our volunteer opportunities and to fill out a volunteer interest form. The Gathering Place is a Premium Member of Spark the Change Colorado. Not a Member, Yet?
