We are excited to present our Monthly Volunteer Guide! Find volunteer opportunities, new projects and events, fresh ideas and old wisdom on giving back. We look forward to helping you Connect, Spark Change, and Spread Kindness.
! s r e k a m e g n a h C L L A Calling Spark the Change Colorado’s mission is to SPARK CHANGE and INSPIRE A MOVEMENT OF GOOD through the power of volunteerism, service, and civic engagement. This Monthly Volunteer Guide is designed to help you find your passion, a place to serve, a movement to join or the inspiration and courage to start a movement of your own! We encourage you to find a place for constructive, healing dialogue and turn those conversations into building a connected, resilient and healthy community. Now, more than ever, non-profits need your help to continue to provide our communities with a variety of important services. We have all had to change how we do our day to day, including making sure that our work places are safe for you to offer your help and your efforts are effective. That can mean some volunteer positions you may be used to have changed to be socially distanced, some have gone virtual, or some are no longer available. This guide is full of places where you are still needed! Please check directly with the organization you are most interested in helping if you have questions about volunteering for them during this pandemic. 2
It’s our job to recruit, connect and recognize those in our community who lead, inspire and are at the heart of the volunteer movement.

! h t n o M s s e n e r a w A h t l a e H l a t n e M I t 's Since 1949, Mental Health America and their affiliates across the country have observed May is Mental Health Month by reaching out to millions of people through the media, local events, and screenings. MHA invites other organizations to join in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people of all ages. Now, more than ever, it is critical to reduce the stigma around mental health struggles, because that stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help. Mental Health America is continuing with the theme 'Tools 2 Thrive' for 2021 Mental Health Month, providing practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase their resiliency regardless of their personal situation. To join in on Mental Health Month, we are connecting with our Mental Wellness Program staff and network to provide Tools 2 Thrive and ways to keep mental health self care in the forefront of your mind on a daily basis. Our first resource focused on Interrupting Bias: Calling Out vs. Calling In. After a year like 2020, it is understandable that tensions are high. With a global pandemic, civic and social unrest, and food insecurity at an all time high, tempers are likely to flare when opposing sides begin to disagree. Has anyone ever said or done something in your presence that just didn't sit well with you? Were you unsure how to react, or if you should at all? Posted in our blog are some tips on how to differentiate between "Calling Out," and "Calling In" to find the best ways to address the issues at hand and bring about positive change. View the full Interrupting Bias Guide in our blog for ways to be a powerful ally in the face of adversity and difficult encounters. 5

: s s e n d n i K f o r a e Y A r e tg u R y b ry to is H l u ef p o H A : d in K Human Bregman is a great read!
Have Hope! In Humankind, a Hopeful History, author Rutger Bregman shows us that human nature is not as selfish, cruel and mean as daily news would have us believe. In fact, Humans are wired for kindness, cooperation and collaboration! Bregman shows us a true life Lord of the Flies and, spoiler alert, the real thing is nothing like the book! Bregman debunks scientific studies that have been touted for decades as proof that humans will devolve to our worst selves because it's in our nature to do so. And he shows that those instances of cruelty that we can think of are not the common denominator, that cruelty is not our default, but a glitch in the system. Turns out random acts of kindness are not so random after all. It's our nature to be kind!

: d r a w A r e e t n u l o V i u s a Y u Minor t n e i p i c e R h c Mar By Cindy Piggott: Meg Harlow’s mother used to tell her that “You may be one person in the world, but to one person, you can be the world.” Meg takes those words to heart.Meg Harlow was honored March 25th as the Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award recipient for her volunteer work at Boulder Voices for Children. The Boulder Voices for Children website notes that, “There is perception that all parents in Boulder County are well educated, wealthy, progressive and healthy. This is not the entire story. Nearly one in ten children in Boulder County live below the poverty line and more than 700 children will be involved in a court case this year. Court Appointed Special Advocate Volunteers (CASAS) are amplifying the voices of abused and neglected children in Boulder County. For the past 10 years, Meg Harlow has served as a CASA. As a retired early childhood educator in Boulder for 34 years, Meg’s passion and energy for children were undeniable. After retirement, she began her next chapter. For the past three years, she has served one very special case. This was a unique child welfare matter involving (l to r): Dana Walters, Meg Harlow a young boy. Meg has been the only consistent, loving and supportive adult in this boy’s life since he was removed from his family. When other welfare professionals gave up on him, Meg persisted. She continued to fight on his behalf. She saw a young person with innumerable skills, assets and strength of character. She fought to help him recover from the trauma he had endured. She let him know that he was worthy of being loved and of being treated with kindness in his life. According to Dana Walters, Program Director for Boulder Voices for Children, “Meg does not seek recognition. She has done one of the hardest things to do in the child welfare system. She has spoken truth to power and called out a system when it was truly letting a child down. Due to her refusal to let an unsafe situation pass under the radar, this child was moved out of harm’s way and is beginning to heal.” Meg continues to fight for the best interests of children. She asks the hard questions. She thinks through the difficult situations and goes above and beyond. She recognizes and appreciates the staff with whom she works. Meg not only works as a CASA, but she also incorporates ideas for training other volunteers as a Peer Coordinator, a leadership role in which she mentors newer advocates. Katie DePoy, Development Director for Boulder Voices for Children concluded, “As a retired educator, Meg helps us to understand how to advocate for the kids we serve in the community and in the schools. We are truly blessed to have such a dedicated, unflappable volunteer, and we hope to work with her for another 10 years. Boulder Voices for Children serves as an advocate for those children in need, in the hopes of changing the trajectory of their lives, one child, one family, one future at a time. Meg’s years of experience, her compassionate heart and her generosity make her a most deserving candidate for the Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award. She donated the $2000 cash award to Boulder Voices for Children.
Do you know an outstanding volunteer? Nominate them today for a chance to win a $2,000 cash award to recipients to designate to a non-profit agency of their choice. The Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award recognizes and celebrates extraordinary volunteers in our community that make a difference. As a program of Spark the Change Colorado, we hope to inspire a movement of good through the power of volunteerism, service and engagement. Our sponsors include Don and Liza Kirkpatrick, Lanny and Sharon Martin, Benjamin and Jill Piggott, Ireland’s Finest Painters, About Time Awards, Cherry Creek Fed Ex Team and the Minoru Yasui Committee members. : r e d n i K a r u a L t M ee s r e e t n u l o V g n i z a m A f o n o i p m a Ch On April 27th Spark's Director of Empowering Aging, Laura Kinder, was recognized by VoyageDenver in the ShoutOutColorado Series for her impressive work with volunteers. Thank you to VoyageDenver and ShoutOutColorado! We are lucky to have Laura on our team, Sparking Change in Colorado communities! See the original article here April 27, 2021 | ShoutOutColorado.com We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Kinder and we’ve shared our conversation below. Hi Laura, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end? As I come closer to that potential “end of my career” I realize that I am where I want to be – working for a nonprofit, Spark the Change Colorado, where we do spark change and inspire a movement of good through the power of volunteerism, service, and engagement. I lead the Empowering Aging department where I surround myself with AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who are assisting older adult clients so that they may live independently and continue to be a vibrant, contributing member of their communities. The volunteers, through their activities with their clients – grocery shopping, going to doctor’s appointments, and attending local events together – are giving the gift of companionship to those in most need of this gift. Rooted in the nonprofit world for more than 40 years, I understand it is my calling to be of service to others and George Bernard Shaw spoke for me when he said: This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one . . . I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no “brief candle” to me. It is sort of a splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations. Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work. I quickly learned that to follow my passions meant embracing volunteerism. When I wanted to be closer to the environment, I became a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator. I held bear cubs, feed baby bats, exercised pelicans, and hibernated snakes. When I wanted to learn more about being a children’s writer, I became a volunteer storyteller at the library and shared my favorite books with eager young listeners. When I wanted to have kittens and puppies around me, I became a volunteer foster parent for the humane society providing well-socialized animals for adoption. When facing my 50th birthday and having been inspired by people who met amazing athletic accomplishments (miles walked, mountains climbed, roads cycled on) I stayed in my natural lane and challenged myself to complete 500 hours of volunteer service in my 50th year. Not only did I reach my goal, but I surpassed it by 200 hours. Today, I have a passion to help our COVID-19 impacted world and do so by volunteering at a testing site in my small mountain town. I have been selfish in my giving because no matter what I might have provided to others through volunteering, the gifts of knowledge, unique experiences, and camaraderie with others have flowed back to me a hundred-fold.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to? Poet’s Row, a group of seven residential apartment buildings, built beginning in 1933, in Denver’s Capitol Hill (recently named one of the 10 most beautiful neighborhoods in the US), each named after an influential poet or author. The Mark Twain building is my favorite. The Molly Brown House Museum, a tribute to a unique woman who was fascinated with life. Denver Botanic Gardens, a showcase of the wonders and beauty of plant life. Who else deserves some credit and recognition? Thank you for opportunity to give credit to so many who paved and who have accompanied or are accompanying me along my journey. The pavers include my parents who first showed me how to give everyday acts of kindness to everyone and how to commit to intentional activism for causes I believe in. Another paver was the inspirational Marlene Wilson who taught and wrote the first books on best practices in volunteer management and leadership. She was a true mentor to me and thousands of others serving volunteers. A huge supporter has been my life partner, Sunny Apke, who I met when responding to her call for volunteers to relocate prairie dogs. Mutual interests in making the world a better place has made our lives better, together. A lot of credit goes to those who have walked along with me and are still walking along with me, sharing stories, ideas, and words of encouragement through peer organizations including the Colorado Volunteer Center Network, Colorado Healthcare Directors of Volunteer Services, DOVIA, Executive Leadership Institute, AmeriCorps Seniors Mountain Regional group, and National Senior Corps Association. I am never alone and cherish the company.

! t h g i l t o p S r e b m e M Bullying Recovery Resource Center About: Bullying Recovery Resource Center, BRRC, was founded in 2017 by parents of a bullied child. The bullying their son experienced, and the lack of action taken by the school where it happened caused them to imagine an organization where other families reeling from the impact of bullying could go to gather information, ideas, education, advocacy skills, and ultimately hope. BRRC’s mission is to defend bullied children and help rebuild lives. Since opening their door, they have helped hundreds of families navigate working with schools and districts to stop the bullying. The vision of BRRC states that all Colorado families experiencing bullying are empowered through education and advocacy to defend their children where the bullying occurs. We are committed to building a community of support to help families rebuild and recover together. BRRC works one-on-one with families to find ideas and solutions that work best for their individual family situation. They also sponsor community events where families can gather, garner support for each other, and have fun. BRRC has offered Peer Recovery Groups for any child impacted by bullying and Adult Advocacy Groups for parents to meet and offer support and ideas to help each other. BRRC also works in the community to educate others on what is bullying, and how to stop it.

COVID-19 Response: With the arrival of the pandemic coupled with a lockdown, our charity went through some changes. We were working with Colorado legislators and other organizations on potential state bullying legislation that was sidelined for almost a year. Luckily, the work was picked up again and the bill named “Jack and Cait’s” law is moving through the Colorado house and hopefully the Colorado senate to help all Colorado children and
their families experiencing bullying. In-person school bullying ceased to exist for children while on-line learning became part of their lives. This unfortunately brought an uptick in cyberbullying which can be just as damaging and hurtful as any other form of bullying. BRRC agrees with bullying experts and those in the educational arena that unfortunately bullying will most likely increase with children returning back to school. The stress that Covid-19 has caused for many families coupled with a lack of social skills can create an uncomfortable environment for children. Our charity has been very busy the last few months with many new clients from across the state.
Volunteer Opportunities: BRRC is embarking on a new phase of growth with creating a Community Outreach Program. They will be reaching out to pediatricians, crisis centers and victim advocates across the state to provide them with information about the services of BRRC, and how they can aid families who are impacted by bullying. Volunteer opportunities include Community Research Coordinators and Community Outreach Coordinators. All volunteers will need to be background checked.Future volunteer opportunities will include volunteers at BRRC community events and webpage maintenance. ! t h g i l t o p S m a r g Pro In accordance with Older Americans Month, we would like to shine a light on one of our direct service volunteer programs at Spark the Change, the Senior Companion Program!
Senior Companion Program About: Spark the Change Colorado’s Senior Companion Program is celebrating its fourth year of operation this July. This vitally important program is part of AmeriCorps Seniors, a United States government agency. The Senior Companion Program engages individuals 55 years and better to realize the independence of older adults in their home and as a team, continue to be vibrant, contributing members of our communities. We serve in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson counties. Because we seek Senior Companions who might not be able to volunteer because of financial situations, we do provide a $3/hour stipend. Along with income eligibility, volunteers need to pass a criminal history background check due to the vulnerability of the clients they will be serving. Other benefits include meal and mileage reimbursements, on-going training, and being a part of a valued national service program. COVID-19 Response: Even with all the COVID-19 precautions, our Senior Companions were able to continue to serve their clients through TeleCare - telephone and telecommunications (iPads/tablets) and perform safe volunteering activities like delivering to clients’ doors groceries, meals, and library books. Many of our Senior Companions were able to help set up doctor’s appointments, including getting the COVID-19 vaccine appointments for their clients. They were able to help sort through issues for their clients, many of whom English is a second language, such as straightening our utility billing problems, applying for benefits (housing vouchers, accessing food cards) and communicating with other agencies for important services. Several of our Senior Companions were able to serve in food banks and other meal delivery agencies. One is even serving at a COVID-19 vaccination site. Percy Lyle participates in a remote 9/11 Day of
Service with the Senior Companion Program in 2020 24
Senior Companions also safely participated in two days of service – 9/11 Day of Service where they wrote thank you letters to healthcare first responders fighting COVID-19 and to firefighters who were on the front lines of stopping many fires in Colorado. The second day of service was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in which Senior Companions created stuffed dragons and other animals that will be given to agencies serving our diverse communities.
Opportunities to Get Involved! In addition to becoming a Senior Companion, where the commitment is anywhere from 5 – 40 hours a week, we also need individuals serving on our Senior Companion Advisory Committee. The commitment is 1 – 3 hours a month attending the meeting and then following up with ideas and suggestions, which may include researching aging issues locally and across the nation.
