WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN

BUILDING A POOL

Building a pool takes more than digging and filling a hole with water. Here’s what you can expect on the journey to backyard bliss.

Designing and building a new swimming pool takes time From the moment you decide to invest in the health and happiness a pool delivers, you’ll be faced with facts, figures and plenty of questions To keep the process smooth, it helps to understand the various project phases and time required for each

SOME CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN

You’ll need to do a bit of groundwork before you schedule an initial consultation with a builder Think about the following so you are ready when the questions start: How much of your backyard do you want to utilise?

What is your vision for the rest of the landscaping?

Do you have house plans and do they show the elevation of your block?

Do you have sewer or stormwater drains running under the property?

Is there enough access for a machine – you’ll need a minimum of 2 metres – and will you need any consent for access from your neighbours?

The material you choose to construct your pool will influence installation timelines, so just be aware that this may vary by weeks or months depending on your choice and the size and scale of the project

STAGE ONE - INITIAL CONSULTATION

Once you've decided to take the plunge, your first interaction with the pool and spa industry is seeking an initial consultation This will probably take a couple of weeks and may involve a pool supplier, builder, contractor, designer, architect and/or engineer. You can expect the following things to take place:

An initial site visit – where the contractor or builder will conduct an inspection and discuss your requirements in detail

Design consultation – depending on your requirements and any complexities that influence the overall design

and construction process, you may engage an architect, engineer or other design professional. Provision of a written quotation – including particulars on contract terms and applicable warranties

Contract finalisation and signing will include your pool’s physical design details (shape, size, water depth, interior finish, filtration and access) It will outline the progress payments schedule, including payment due dates, what each payment covers specifically and what will happen in the event of unforeseen circumstances or delays It should also outline warranty terms on the pool and equipment

STAGE TWO - COUNCIL APPROVALS

This stage can be lengthy, taking anywhere from just a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the approval process in your state or territory

Things may move a little slower than you would like, but getting approval is required to ensure your pool is built to plan Check with your local council if you are unsure about what is involved Approval ensures that your pool meets all the applicable legal requirements, including local structural and safety obligations and state-mandated conditions

You’ll need to check with your water provider to see if any water restrictions are in place before filling your pool and you will also need permission from the local water authority before filling up using mains water

GATE THE REMEMBER TO SHUT

Drowning is a leading cause of death for young children in Australia and New Zealand, often due to unsafe or faulty pool fencing To prevent these tragedies, it’s essential to regularly check pool and spa barriers to ensure they comply with safety standards

Gates must always be self-closing and self-latching, and objects that children can climb on must be removed These simple steps, along with proper supervision, significantly reduce drowning risks Visit spasa com au for more information on pool safety and compliance resources

STAGE THREE - INSTALLATION OR CONSTRUCTION

Installation or construction is the largest variable in a new pool project A prefabricated plunge or above-ground pool can take as little as two or three days, but you'll be looking at close to eight weeks for a concrete build Fibreglass and composite/vinyl-lined pools will generally take three to four weeks to finish Processes include:

Excavation and earthworks

Construction (in the case of concrete or composite/vinyl-lined pools) or shell installation (in the case of fibreglass pools)

Tiling

Laying the coping

Safety barrier installation

Filling the pool and balancing the water

Depending on your location, there may also be a requirement for staged inspections by the council or a private certifier throughout the process Ask your contractor to explain this process in more detail

STAGE FOUR - HANDOVER

Handover should include provision of a checklist and a comprehensive run-down on how to maintain and protect your new investment

Make sure your builder or contractor covers off the following:

Provision of a certificate of completion or similar

Explanation of statutory and manufacturer warranties

Provision of equipment and accessories information, including instruction or operations manuals

Explanation of pool safety instructions

Start-up and running procedure instruction

Maintenance schedule steps and recommendations

Referral to a qualified SPASA service technician for ongoing maintenance and advice

Once the handover is complete, it’s time to grab friends and family, dive on in and enjoy all the benefits of pool ownership!

We’ve provided this information on average installation and construction time frames as a general guide Every pool is different, so your installation may take more – or less – time, based on specific project variables The average times provided do not account for extraordinary circumstances or events, like access difficulties or material choices that may delay construction

These times also exclude additional after-the-fact processes like paving or landscaping Your contractor can provide a more detailed and accurate plan based on project specifics

POOL CONSTRUCTION

Elevated above ground level, this contemporary pool and spa design commands attention as the property's focal point Its elegant curved water feature delights from all perspectives, seamlessly blending form and function to evoke the beauty of nature

CUSTOMISING YOUR CONCRETE POOL

ADDING UNIQUE FEATURES FOR PERSONALISED LUXURY

There are plenty of different reasons to get a pool, and even more styles to choose from But for those with the means, luxury is the order of the day Of all the pool building options out there, concrete pools offer a level of luxury and customisation that other materials simply can’t match In this blog, we’re going to cover some of the ways in which using concrete pool construction can allow you to build an aquatic haven like no other Let’s get into it!

THE FLEXIBILITY OF CONCRETE

For discerning homeowners seeking a truly personalised aquatic sanctuary, the versatility of concrete stands unmatched While other materials offer pre-fabricated designs, concrete invites imagination to the fore It's not just a material; it's a canvas, ready to be moulded to the whims and desires of the pool owner (You!)

Whether you're envisioning dramatic curves, grand grottos, or bespoke beach entries, concrete allows the flexibility to bring these dreams to fruition Its adaptability extends beyond mere aesthetics, accommodating depth changes and integrated features seamlessly With concrete, the limitations of pool design are set only by the bounds of your imagination

WATER FEATURES FOR AMBIENCE

Water features are more than just aesthetic accessories; they're mood setters, transforming a basic pool into a luxurious oasis For those keen on channeling the serenity of nature, cascading waterfalls offer both visual and auditory tranquility

Picture a waterfall, either camouflaged with natural stone or boasting a sleek modern edge, as it pours gracefully into your pool But it doesn’t stop there

Fountains, with their myriad of design choices from delicate bubblers to bold jet streams, can act as the pool's pièce de résistance And for those seeking an ethereal touch, rain curtains deliver a mesmerising backdrop, creating a wall of droplets that seem almost magical as they shimmer under the sunlight or moonlight

Customising with water features not only amplifies luxury but also enriches the overall swimming experience

TANNING LEDGES AND SHALLOW ZONES

When luxury is the goal, even the shallowest parts of your pool need to be considered Tanning ledges, sometimes referred to as sun shelves or Baja shelves, offer the best of both worlds – a sun-soaked relaxation spot that allows you to dip just a bit into the water

These shallow zones are perfect for lounge chairs, letting you sunbathe with a book or cocktail in hand, intermittently cooled by the gentle touch of water For families, these areas also act as a safe haven for younger swimmers, allowing them to play under the sun

Crafted with precision from concrete, these ledges can be tailored to any size, shape, or depth, making them a versatile addition to your luxurious pool

INTEGRATED SPAS AND HOT TUBS

The epitome of relaxation and luxury, integrated spas and hot tubs within your concrete pool provide a resort-like experience in the comfort of your backyard Imagine transitioning seamlessly from a cool swim to a warm, bubbly soak, all without leaving your pool area

These integrated features can be sculpted to match the curves and aesthetics of your pool, offering both continuity in design and a stark contrast in experience Whether you're seeking therapeutic jets to soothe your muscles after a long day or just a cosy spot to share a glass of wine with loved ones, an integrat d ll th l quotient of any pool setup

LIGHTING: SETTING T

Swimming isn't just a daytim the magic truly begins with illumination of a pool can p ambiance, turning it from a enchanting lagoon or a sop entertainment area

LED lights, which can be re can change colours and eve Underwater spotlights can as a waterfall or sculpture, i Moreover, fibre-optic lights on the pool floor, adding to visibility; it's about crafting every occasion

UNIQUE POOL SHAPE

While classic rectangular and kidney-shaped pools remain timeless, concrete offers limitless design possibilities Whether you're dreaming of a tropical lagoon with natural contours or a pool shaped like a famous logo or symbol, concrete makes it all possible Its flexibility allows you to go beyond standard shapes, enabling the creation of islands, peninsulas, or even man-made streams that flow seamlessly through your backyard

waterproof sound systems delivering your favorite tunes underwater for the ultimate relaxation experience With smart home integration, you can easily manage every aspect of your pool adjusting temperature, lighting, and filtration straight from your smartphone, whether you're at home or away

Whether you're hosting a party or enjoying a quiet evening, a concrete pool equipped with state-of-the-art technology allows you to create a personalised, tech-enhanced aquatic paradise right in your backyard

Themes can be incorporated holistically, blending custom shapes, depth variations, and unique features like waterfalls or fire pits to create a truly immersive experience With the expertise of a skilled designer, the possibilities are endless, ensuring your pool becomes a personal sanctuary unlike any other

ADVANCED POOL TECHNOLOGY

These days, even pools are getting smarter Concrete pools offer seamless integration of cutting-edge technology, elevating both luxury and convenience to new levels Imagine automated cleaning systems with in-floor jets that keep your pool spotless, energy-efficient heat pumps that maintain the perfect temperature year-round, and

SAFE! KEEPING PAWS

DOG OWNERS GUIDE TO ALL THINGS POOLS!

What is the best way to make a pool safe for dogs? It's a common question that any pool+pooch owner should ask at one point or another One of the most loveable traits

of dogs is their willingness to jump headfirst into just about anything Seeming to be without a care in the world and always with a smile (or something equivalent) on their face This trait that endears canines to us humans is also one of the reasons why it's part of our job to look out for dogs

This is especially true when it comes to pool safety and maintenance around the home So let's check out what you need to do to make sure your pool is a safe haven for your furry friend.

CHEMICALS

Pool chemicals are a necessary and fairly unavoidable part of pool ownership As pools are not drained and refilled after use like a bathtub, the water has to be treated in order to avoid algae and other bacteria The most common pool chemical you'll see or have heard of is chlorine Chlorine is a pretty strong chemical and although the amount that is administered to swimming pools is nontoxic, it still certainly has its drawbacks The need to wash your skin as well as your bathers (if you follow the manufacturer's guidelines), after swimming in chlorinated pools should give some indication of it not being entirely ideal for human skin

For dogs, who are more sensitive than humans in many respects, this is also true Dog's sensitive eyes and ears can sometimes be irritated by chlorinated water and can also lead to red spots and rashes. Wet, chlorinated dog hair is a breeding ground for bacteria and also needs to be washed after a dip

So what can be done? One answer to this problem is a salt water pool chlorinator Yes, I know that says chlorinator but hear me out! Salt water systems work differently to classic chlorine systems in a few ways To start with salt water systems use a specific pool-grade salt that is fed into the system. That salt is subjected to a chemical reaction that produces chlorine to be fed into the pool What's important is that the end result of this process is a lot less chlorine in the pool overall, less of a chlorine smell, and less irritation to the eyes and skin This is the case for both dogs and people

Another option is a chemical called bromine This is a common alternative to chlorine additives as it is also a less harsh chemical than chlorine It has several other benefits as well, such as being effective for a longer period than chlorine, being kinder on skin and eyes, having less of a smell than chlorine and also having the added benefit of being low in pH. This means that less chemicals are required to balance the pool’s pH levels after adding bromine

DOG BEHAVIOUR TRAINING

Dog's are amazing pets also in part because of their ability to learn and be trained. But it's on us as owners to take the time to train our pups so that they can be safe around the water

Most dogs see a big pool of water and think it's time for a big drink especially in summer Though this likely won't cause serious harm to your dog, it can definitely upset their stomach. Having your dog's actual waterbowl nearby the pool is a good way to discourage chlorinated hydration

As a general rule, when your dog is near the family pool, it's best to treat them much like you would a young child. Introducing dogs to the pool gently and gradually is the best way to be sure they're comfortable Making sure they know the way out is important, as most dogs will struggle to use the sides of the pool to get out, and need to know where the stairs are

W SOME LIKE IT

WHICH SPA IS RIGHT FOR YOU? HOT!

When the seasons change thoughts turn to warmer water and there's nothing quite like a hot soak to help beat those winter blues! A spa is a fantastic investment, offering health and wellness benefits with year-round accessibility The warm water can increase blood circulation, lower blood pressure reduce stress, and relieve sore and aching muscles and joints

There’s plenty to consider when you start investigating options, including budget for initial outlay as well as running costs, the installation location, ongoing sanitation requirements, and any required after-sales care and maintenance

Before you get bogged down in the details, start with the basics Spas come in three fundamental forms - inground, portable, and swim spa options Learning more about each will help narrow down your choices

INGROUND SPAS

Inground spas are a popular choice as they offer a huge range of benefits They’re a great way to relax and a great investment, adding value to your home, and lasting for a long, long time

INGROUND SPA DESIGN AND MATERIALS

Inground spas seamlessly blend into your landscape, either as standalone features or integrated with inground pools Combining a pool and spa is cost-effective since they are built at the same time Custom-built inground spas offer total design freedom You can make your spa a focal point with features like cascading overflows

Customise your outdoor spa to blend in or stand out and impress your neighbours Durable materials like concrete

and steel ensure your spa lasts for decades You can add decorative touches, choose different finishes or colours, and customise the seating design Flexibility extends to water jets, lighting, and more

INSTALLATION, HEATING, AND SANITATION

Inground spa installers use remote equipment connections for efficient, cost-effective heating Spas can be heated separately from pools, allowing for year-round use without heating the entire pool Gas heaters using natural gas or LPG can heat the water in just 20-30 minutes For extra convenience, an automation system can start heating your spa before you even get home!

It makes sense to purchase a cover for your inground spa, as it will help the water retain some heat between uses It will also prevent debris from making its way in and keeps maintenance and heating costs down

PORTABLE SPAS

Another excellent choice for a year-round relaxation, portable spas are easy to install and can even go with you when you move

DESIGN AND MATERIALS

Portable spas incorporate a shell that is generally made from acrylic and fiberglass - both are strong and durable

required to run them fits into the surrounding spa cabinet

materials that will withstand damage from the chemicals needed to keep your spa sparkling clean Most importantly, both materials can handle the heat These types of spas are mostly factory produced, which means they come with all the associated warranties for workmanship and parts that you would expect from any manufactured item

Customisation options are plentiful, allowing you to select the model, size, shell and cabinet colour, water jets, and accessories like lighting, inbuilt speakers, and timers

Choose between a wooden or thermal plastic cabinet to match your aesthetic A portable spa can seat between four and twelve people, depending on the size Many seating configurations are available, and some even come with independent seat controls, meaning that each bather can customise their own jet settings

INSTALLATION, HEATING, AND SANITATION

Portable spas are a neat option, as all the equipment

It’s important to ensure that the spa is installed onto a solid base and a flat, level surface Installation can be above or below ground level, providing that access is available around the entire spa, and as with other spa types, a cover will save you on heating and cleaning costs

SWIM SPAS

When it comes to exercise and relaxation, swim spas offer the best of both worlds They include jets like a spa that can be used to create a current to swim again, while still offering somewhere to relax at the end of a hard day

DESIGN AND MATERIALS

Swim spas are perfect for smaller backyards or for swimming who follow a home therapy program The main aim of a swim spa is to provide the ability to swim distances with the need for a big pool

Swimmers can customise to suit specific exercise or therapy needs - the stronger the current, the harder the workout Exercise isn’t limited to swimming, with running, core workouts, and equipment-based programs all possible using the resistance from the water jets

INSTALLATION, HEATING AND SANITATION

You’ll obviously need to ensure you have enough space for a swim spa While they can be installed inground, you need space in order to access plumbing and other equipment

Year-round swimming will require the installation of heating to keep the water toasty warm, so you should make yourself aware of the ongoing costs You’ll also need to keep an eye on your filtration system and carry out all the required maintenance including filter media replacement and regular water replacement, as well as your sanitation regime In case we haven't made it clear yet, a cover will save you time, money, and effort

WANT TO LEARN MORE?

There’s no denying that a spa is a worthwhile investment, offering relaxation and comfort, especially during the cooler months However, it's also a decision that requires careful consideration, planning, and thorough research to ensure you make the right choice

With various options available, from size and style to features and materials, it’s essential to consult a professional They can guide you through the decisionmaking process, helping you navigate the available choices and ensuring you select the best spa to suit your needs, lifestyle, and space

COOKING? WHAT’S OUTDOOR KITCHEN

DESIGN IDEAS

It’s hard to ignore the beauty of a well-designed outdoor kitchen and its sheer convenience Opting for a second cooking space keeps the crowds – and the mess – out of the house and gives you more time to enjoy with family and friends

HIT THE RIGHT SPOT

In any building project, location is the first consideration If you’re retrofitting, you’ll probably have limited options, but it’s best to aim as close to your existing kitchen as you can get Why put both cooking spaces within a stone’s throw of each other? Closer proximity means you can connect to existing services more easily – a less expensive alternative than running additional plumbing, power and gas lines

You'll probably want the area to be under cover so it’s protected from the elements But you’ll also need to factor in ventilation and how close you are to other living areas –you don’t want smoke from the barbeque impacting other parts of the house

WHO, WHAT AND HOW OFTEN?

Think about who will be using the space, for what and how often Are you planning on only cooking the occasional mid-week family meal, or are you more likely to host regular lunches for twenty with a pig on a spit and all the trimmings? Thinking about casual pizza nights with the neighbours or doubling down to learn the ins-and-outs of Texas BBQ every weekend? Outdoor kitchens can run from simple to sophisticated – how you want to use the

space will help determine the equipment you need and also guide the budget

LAND ON A LAYOUT

Once you have decided how you want to use the space, you can start to formulate designs and based around equipment Kitchen spaces fall in to one of four key zones: storage, preparation, cooking and serving Within those zones, there are additional sub-areas and specific placement considerations.

STORAGE

Storage includes cupboards, cabinets and cold areas – the all-important fridge Give yourself enough room to store all the essentials; crockery and cutlery, tablecloths, napkins, pantry items like salt and pepper, sauces, oils and marinades, as well as cooking and preparation tools, cleaning supplies and other items like a first aid kit Make sure storage and cabinets are protected from the elements to avoid things like mould and mustiness from damp

PREPARATION

Clear benchtops for food prep are a must You’ll be dealing with meat, seafood and vegetables – chopping, slicing, dicing, marinating meats, assembling kebabs, shelling prawns and slathering pizza dough with sauces and toppings – so you’ll want plenty of room to work comfortably

All that food prep will be pretty inviting for creepy crawlies, so you may end up with some unwanted guests Keeping prep areas clean will help minimise bugs and other insects but think about installing repellent devices like zappers. Natural options like citronella candles or oils will help keep the mozzies at bay

To keep things clean, you’ll need a sink (with hot and cold running water) that’s also big enough to take larger items like grills from the barbeque for easy washing Don’t forget space for a bin that won’t be in your way or under your feet

COOKING

Your cooking zone incorporates all the equipment you’ll need to feed your family and guests – whether that is a barbeque, smoker, stove top, pizza oven or all of the above You’ll need to know the exact dimensions of all cooking equipment and appliances to properly plan the design

In addition, the cooking zone needs to be heatproof and well-ventilated and must have access to required services, including power, water and gas Many modular outdoor kitchen options are available that incorporate benchtops, storage, cooking, fridge, and sink into a single linear design, taking the guesswork out and simplifying the design process

SERVING

Make sure there’s enough room for a good-sized table and comfortable chairs in a pleasant setting so everyone

can relax and enjoy their meal out of the sun (or rain) and away from any barbeque smoke Comfort should always be the focus of any living space, outdoors or otherwise!

OTHER ESSENTIALS

As with any kitchen, you’ll need durable, non-slip flooring Being outdoors, it must also withstand some weather and be suitable for high traffic Pavers, concrete and bricks are all outstanding exterior options.

Never underestimate the importance of lighting – in an outdoor environment or anywhere else Poorly lit spaces make hard work of everything, so take the time to plan lighting and consult an electrician for advice on the type of outdoor fittings you should look for and where to place them

If you really want to get your money’s worth, consider installing heating or cooling options that would make the space a viable, entertaining area year-round

There are many energy-efficient options that won't hurt the budget or the planet Including extras like comfy seating and a big screen TV will have you watching the footy grand final with your mates over ice-cold beers and homemade pizzas before you know it

POOL HOWTOMAKEYOUR

MORE SUSTAINABLE?

Sustainability has become a top priority in many industries, and the pool and spa sector is no exception While swimming pools may not be the largest contributors to climate change, they do

consume significant resources, especially when you look at the impact on a family’s utility bill With rising costs of living, more families are seeking ways to reduce expenses, and making pools more eco-friendly is a great place to start The good news? Sustainability doesn’t have to break the bank it can actually save you money

WHY IS SUSTAINABILITY SO IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW?

The obvious answer to this question is climate change

There are many bigger and more impactful polluters out there than swimming pools there's no doubt about that But pools (and spas) certainly use their share of resources when you zoom in on the family utility bill

In a period where the cost of living is rising by the day, families are looking at more ways to reduce strain on their budget, and the giant hole in the ground filled with water and heated by gas certainly looks to many like a good place to start

MAKING

SUSTAINABILITY FEEL ATTAINABLE

Traditionally speaking, whenever the idea of making something 'more sustainable' was mentioned, most people would instantly be wondering "how much more is this going to cost me?" Although this sentiment is definitely changing, the process is slow and sustainability still exists as something of a buzzword for a lot of people

Being a part of the pool and spa industry, it's our job to alleviate some of these concerns as the truth is;

sustainable pools exist to save money in the long run This is the big selling point for sustainability right now Yes, we're all worried about the consequences of not trying to be greener, but the thing many people are worried about right now is how they can enjoy their pool at home while still fitting it into the budget

WHAT ARE THE LEAST SUSTAINABLE PARTS OF POOLS AND SPAS?

So in the interest of reducing waste, reducing the use of resources, and of course the impact of pool ownership on the utility bill; what are the most costly aspects of pool ownership?

Starting from the start, let's talk about the materials used to build pools The main options here are concrete, fibreglass, and vinyl; of which, the latter appears to be clearly the most sustainable Vinyl pools are able to be made of many recyclable materials and are also recyclable themselves Fibreglass isn't too bad but still

uses a lot of chemicals to produce and is tricky to recycle Finally, the least sustainable is concrete The production of concrete has been a major polluter for many years, though that industry is rapidly finding ways to clean up its processes

Concrete pools are also a great home for algae, resulting in the need for more chemical control to prevent build-up Filling the pool itself is a necessary step and can't be avoided It isn't really one of the most expensive steps but the need to refill the pool in hotter months, especially in drought-affected areas can be a concern

By far and away the most expensive part of owning a pool is when making use of a traditional gas-powered pool heater These use a large amount of fossil fuel to run, as well as being an expensive portion of the monthly power bill Back in 2019, the South Australian government estimated a gas pool heater would cost a family up to $17 per hour of usage Back then, natural gas cost just over $7

a gigajoule At the time of writing this article, natural gas costs $27 per gigajoule A 285% increase Yikes

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO MAKE A POOL SUSTAINABLE?

So now that we've beaten the point to death about the importance of sustainability, let's check out the options available to help pool owners go green

SOLAR POOL HEATING

Heating the pool is the most expensive aspect of ownership and as such, there are plenty of gains to be made here The use of solar pool heating is a brilliant alternative that is becoming a more inviting option as time goes by The initial outlay on a solar pool heater is definitely a consideration to make, but as the technology becomes more competitive, the prices have been falling as well Additionally, given the cost of gas at present, the savings afforded by solar power are a lot more clear-cut.

THERMAL POOL COVER

This works hand in hand with the solar pool heating option By using a thermal pool cover, the water retains substantially more heat and is less prone to evaporation in the summer months as well

CHOOSING SUSTAINABLE POOL CHEMICALS

Classic pool chemicals like chlorine have a notable impact on the environment mainly due to the nature of their production Some usage of chlorine is going to be necessary, even if it's just a 6-monthly chlorine shock to the pool

However, there are more and more naturally occurring mineral-based pool chemicals available out there This also applies to pool water stabilisers as well

THINK GREEN!

So there you have it! Sustainability is an important part of any changing industry and ours is no different As it becomes a larger conversation point for us all, being clued up on the best methods to reduce your footprint works in everyone's favour. Sustainability in pool ownership is more than just a trend it's a smart way to save money and reduce environmental impact

By adopting options like solar heating, thermal pool covers, and eco-friendly pool chemicals, you can enjoy your pool while contributing to a greener future Ready to make your pool more sustainable?

Visit climatecarecertified.com.au for expert advice and tips on how to go green without sacrificing the enjoyment of your pool!

DIP YOUR TOE INTO COLD WATER THERAPY

Big wellness trend over the last few years, cold water therapy is having its moment in the sun. So, what is it, and should you test the waters at home? It may be enjoying a lot of attention right now, but cold water therapy is not a new idea. It’s long been a practice in colder parts of the world and plenty of sporting teams subscribe to recovery regimes that include immersion in ice baths

A COLD COMFORT

We’ve been told for years that a blast of cold water at the end of a shower can have numerous benefits from the physical - a purported increase in metabolism, immunity boost, and a reduction in inflammation - through to mental health benefits including a lift in mood and heightened endorphins release. Despite all of this good news, it can be pretty hard to turn the tap to ‘cold’ on a frosty winter morning.

WHY ICE THERAPY?

Ice baths, once exclusive to elite athletes, are now embraced by fitness enthusiasts for their potent benefits in post-workout recovery and overall well-being Ice baths expedite muscle recovery by reducing soreness and inflammation The cold water constricts blood vessels, flushing out waste products like lactic acid from intense exercise This quickens recovery, allowing for more frequent and intense training sessions

They also effectively reduce inflammation, aiding in chronic pain management and speeding up injury healing by reducing swelling and promoting tissue repair Beyond physical benefits, the shock of cold water stimulates the release of adrenaline and endorphins, boosting mental alertness and resilience to stress. Improving circulation is another significant advantage. Cold water immersion causes blood vessels to constrict and then dilate upon warming, enhancing blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body, supporting cardiovascular health and vitality

Integrating ice baths into your routine can enhance overall performance by reducing fatigue and supporting faster recovery, maintaining peak physical condition and steady progress toward fitness goals

Start gradually with short sessions and consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns, especially with existing health conditions

Ice baths offer a holistic approach to recovery, benefiting both body and mind Whether you're an athlete striving for peak performance or seeking a refreshing recovery method, ice baths can be a valuable addition to your wellness routine

IF YOU DO DECIDE TO DIVE IN

Seek medical advice beforehand to ensure this is a safe activity to undertake

Always have someone nearby keeping a safe eye on you

Don’t stay too long - keep moving and keep your swim brief

Don’t delay in drying - remove wet items, dry off quickly and dress warmly

Have a hot beverage and perhaps a little food

Delay the hot shower - extreme body temperature changes can have a negative effect

WHY, WHEN AND HOW TO EMPTY A FIBREGLASS POOL

Fibreglass pools are a popular choice thanks to their durability, low maintenance and aesthetic appeal As with any swimming pool, circumstances may require you to empty it at some point, but it’s not something you should take on without consideration, caution and expert advice

This article explores why you might need to empty a fibreglass pool, the risks involved and whether you should do it yourself

Spoiler alert: you shouldn’t

WHY EMPTY A FIBREGLASS POOL?

There are really only a couple of reasons you need to empty your pool:

Repairs or maintenance: You’ll probably need to drain the pool if you’re carrying out extensive repairs or maintenance like fixing major cracks or replacing equipment that can’t be easily or safely accessed when the pool is full.

Renovation or remodelling: If you’ve decided to give your pool a facelift – like resurfacing the interior – the water will obviously need to come out first

In virtually all other circumstances, including cleaning or water balancing, we’d recommend against draining your pool

Even when you have repairs or remodelling to do – and there’s no DIY challenge you wouldn’t accept under normal conditions – we’d strongly suggest you shouldn’t go it alone

WHY EMPTY A FIBREGLASS POOL?

For many pool owners – particularly those that are new to the game – getting the water chemistry right can be frustrating When your pool water is cloudy or green, misdiagnosing the root cause and incorrectly treating it

1 All pools are designed to be full o particularly important for fibreglass was installed, it was dropped into th dug for it and earth was replaced –around it

Hydrostatic valves located in the bottom of your poo are designed to allow groundwater to enter the pool once it’s emptied, in order to equalise the pressure. This is not an area to dabble in if you are not a qualified professional If you don’t know what you’re doing, the pool could ‘float’ or collapse due to hydrostatic pressure.

3 It’s not just the pool, either Surrounding areas can become destabilised when you drain your pool Any ground movement that occurs has potential to damage other parts of the pool, like the deck or coping, which all add up in avoidab rectification work

KEEP YOUR POOL FROG FREE

Frogs are valuable to the ecosystem, feasting on mosquitoes and bugs, but they can cause trouble in your pool by disrupting its chemistry and becoming dehydrated by pool chemicals They’re especially drawn to pools during warm, wet weather due to the water, food sources like flies, and the pool’s cool environment, which also makes it an ideal place for breeding

BUT WHAT DO YOU DO?

But what should you do to keep frogs out of your pool? Simple! Follow these simple tips.

First, create a barrier with a pool blanket, which not only keeps frogs out but also protects your pool Alternatively, dilute salt in a bucket of water (1 kg of table salt per 10L) and pour it around the pool’s edges When the water evaporates, the leftover salt makes it uncomfortable for frogs to hop into the pool However, be mindful of using salt near plants, pets, and kids.

Next, maintain a clean pool Debris, leaves, and algae can attract frogs Regular cleaning, using a skimmer, and running your pool cleaner a few times a week are easy steps to help keep your pool inviting for humans but not for frogs We recommend consulting your local pool shop or service technician for expert advice

Frogs prefer cool water, so turning up the heat may deter them Keeping your backyard neat and filling any holes or removing dense weeds will eliminate hiding spots for frogs. Fertilisers with ammonia sulfate can also discourage them

Since frogs are nocturnal, turn off pool lights in the evening to avoid attracting both frogs and their food sources, like mosquitoes Lastly, keeping your pool pump running or adding a water feature will make your pool less appealing, as frogs prefer still water

Frogs can be beneficial for the ecosystem, but they don’t belong in your pool For more tips on maintaining a frogfree pool, visit poolspalife com au and ensure your pool remains a relaxing haven for you, not the frogs!
