How do you design unplanned structures? Our current project focuses on the use of rapid protyping technology in concert with traditional architectural design methods to develop a design for an aggregating space frame-type structure. Using parametrics, we investigate how variation and further development can be introduced to the system and eventually calibrate its performance to a specific site.

CULTURAL OFFICE 3a Studio Winter 2009
Inspired by Malcom Gladwell’s musings about the life of sidewalks in New York, the cultural office develops programmatic boundaries as spaces of “serendipitous” interaction between the tenants and general public who use the building. Pedestrian, bike, and automobile, navigate a generous vertical public space anchored by library, cafe, assembly, and exhibition programmes.

BEACH HOUSE Key West, Florida December 2007
In response to a project brief calling for the design of a “sustainable” eco house, our strategy was to achieve material efficiency through the design of a repeatitive base structural module. Ultimately, the house is constructed of plywood components, optimized to be laser-cut from 4’x8’ plywood sheets to minimize material wastage and allow for assembly by unskilled workers.

The installation is acomplished through the fabrication and assembly of over 16,000 identical, interlocking, laser-cut, corragated plastic components. Using video projection and the resultant structure create the space of Dedalus’s imagination for an audience of 600 people.

Over the course of a 20-day workshop at the Royal Acacademy of Fine Art, in Copenhagen, we produced “Sargasso Field�; a project which speculates an architecture of mechanical empathy. Deployed are strategies of component-based systems, mechanics, and digital computation, to approximate a diverse living ecology.

In September 2009, the work was exhibited at the Pluto electronic musical festival in Brussels. In November 2009, the project returned to Copenhagen as a central piece in an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, running simotaneously with the UN Climate Change Summit.

Our proposal looks at “gray” urban space as a site of potential intervention within the city.To create an architecture of confrontation and response, we a constructed a canopy of 30,000 bamboo sticks uplit with user-controlled LED panels.

Over the course of my internship with Kohn Pederson Fox in New York, I was involved with three projects; contributing as a member on teams for the 42nd street office rennovation as well as Rosslyn Gateway Development in Rosslyn Virginia, as well as collaborating directly with partner, Douglas Hocking, to develop a set of graphic standards for archival project drawings produced by the office.
