Mozart’s ‘Great’ Mass in C Minor is packed with virtuosic solo and choral writing, beautiful, soaring melodies, florid arias, and extraordinary choral movements. Midwinter Songs by Morten Lauridsen (best known for his setting of O Magnum Mysterium) is a work of towering lyricism, setting deeply moving words by Robert Graves. Fern Hill, John Corigliano’s setting of the words of Dylan Thomas, is distinctively American, tuneful and romantic, full of colour and expression.

Bristol’s own, Jane Taylor is no ordinary singer-songwriter, rather a determinedly independent artist with an intangible show-stealing magic in her voice and an exceptional song-writing wanderlust that flits from delicate Tori Amos-style balladry to sharp Joni Mitchell boho-jazz-folk, mixed with a shot of Damien Rice and The Sundays.

The band sadly disbanded in 1997, but come together again for this reunion concert, performing a varied programme of classical and original light music to celebrate their 29 year history.

The critically acclaimed virtuoso pianist Zoran Janci´c has entranced audiences worldwide with the magnificent dynamism and exquisite sensitivity of his playing. As Professor of Piano Studies at the Academy of Music in Sarajevo, he was one of the last staff members to continue teaching, despite the life threatening conditions of the Bosnian War, and, at great personal risk, gave performances during the siege of Sarajevo until he left the city in exile in the spring of 1993.

The BMCO’s summer concert opens with Grieg’s spectacular first Orchestral Suite from the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and concludes with a superbly judged performance of Sibelius’s masterful, majestic 5th Symphony, commissioned in honour of the composer’s 50th Birthday. Between the two, the excellent Bristol violinist Emil Huckle-Kleve, string semi-finalist in the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition in 2005, joins the Orchestra for a sparkling performance of Dvo¨rák’s beloved, richly lyrical concerto.

Ten years old this year, but still flush with the sheer chutzpah of what it does, People of Note blows out the candles with gusto with an exhilarating a cappella night showcasing its greatest hits from across the years as well as brand new songs. Traditional old school American country from a legendary balladeer. It is difficult to imagine the world of country music without the vast contribution that lone star hero Gene Watson has made to it. Long one of the standard bearers for honest, soulful ballads in the classic country tradition, his mid-Seventies chart debut Love in the Hot Afternoon ignited a firestorm of national hits including Any Which Way from the soundtrack of the Clint Eastwood movie of the same title.
