The world-famous Kruger National Park is a South African national treasure and contains the largest concentration of game species on earth. The 20million hectare Kruger National Park is the largest and best known game reserve in South Africa and runs along the north-eastern border of the country and is larger than Israel or Wales.

It extends 350km from north to south and 60km from east to west. To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, to the north is Zimbabwe and to the east is Mozambique. Visiting the Kruger National Park at any time of the year is rewarding. The summer months, October to February, can be hot, while the winter months are cold at night but mild and pleasant during the day. Kruger National Park has a range of accommodation options in the main rest camps with chalets, cottages, bungalow tents, caravan and camp sites or bushveld camps, bush lodges and private safari lodges. These options vary in price and style; from rustic to luxurious.

Adjoining Kruger National Park to the south are a wide range of breath-taking private luxurious game lodges and bush camps. Within these reserves the operators are given sole traversing rights and rangers can drive off-road to track animals. The lodges within these ultra-luxurious private reserves offer stunning accommodation, gourmet bush cuisine, a high level of service, heavenly blissful spa treatments and excellent game viewing. As if this wasn’t enough a feature at each lodge is a variety of amazing game activities and game drives in open safari vehicles by day and night, under the expert guidance of trained safari rangers and trackers.

Sabi Sand Game Reserve is a 65,000 hectare wildlife sanctuary forming part of the greater Kruger National Park game preservation area. No fences exist within this area and animals are free to roam unhindered through this enormous conservancy. The reserve is especially famous for its leopard sightings. Thornybush Private Game Reserve is adjacent to the Greater Kruger National Park comprised of 11,500 hectares of pristine African bushveld. With an ambudance of bird and mammal species including lion, leopard, elephant, rhino (black and white) and buffalo, it is also home to seven exclusive lodges. Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is located in what is called the ‘Lowveld’, which is a vast track of sub-tropical savannah bushveld in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The reserve consists of prime wildlife habitat situated on the unfenced western boundary of the world-famous Kruger National Park, and boasts great herds of buffalo.

The region also holds many more sensational natural attractions. The amazing view from God’s Window near Graskop, the beauty of Blyde River Canyon and the Victorian gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest.

Jo’burg, as everyone calls Johannesburg, is a vast and colourful city, with more than nine million resident - and it’s still growing. Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest and most densely populated city and is in many ways the powerhouse of the country. It is a young city too, which has only really grown since the hectic gold rush days, which is the reason for Jo’burg’s many different names, ‘eGoli’ and ‘Gauteng’ amongst them meaning gold - City of Gold.

Though it’s a bit of a cliché to say, Johannesburg really is a city of contrasts with opulent mansions in leafy suburbs, protected by high walls and razor wire, not quite cheek by cheek, but only a mile or two from sprawling shanty towns housing millions of intensely poor people. For a different kind of perspective on the city take a guided tour into the vast, sprawling township of Soweto and see the ‘shebeens’ which are the laidback local taverns.

The city is home to the imposing Stock Exchange building and is the financial and commercial hub of the country.

To gain an understanding on South Africa’s history there is The Apartheid

Although Gauteng's primary attraction is big business, it is also now a tourist attraction with something for everyone. Vast and opulent shopping malls with exclusive boutiques in the affluent suburbs north of the city, amongst them Sandton, Melrose Arch, Hyde Park, Rosebank and Four Ways. Outstanding world-class restaurants and bars, vibrant pavement cafes and a wonderful selection of music venues and entertainment complexes. Countless museums and theatres with performances of world class standards, all add to the diversity and stimulating energy of the city.

Museum, which is a fascinating albeit disturbing glimpse back into the country’s darkest days, and the 1976 Soweto student uprisings and its triumph.

Spend a day at the famous Gold Reef City, where you can relive the old gold rush days of Johannesburg and even go underground on a mine exploration. There is also a wealth of culture to be found around Gauteng with its art routes, historical battlefields and its World Heritage Site, the Sterkfontein Caves and The Cradle of Mankind with its invaluable archaeological discoveries.

N DURBA

Durban is blessed with sunshine pretty much all year round, and combined with the warm Indian Ocean, makes it a popular destination for both South Africans and international tourists at any time. In and around Durban there’s swimming, surfing, hiking, biking, history, spectacular mountain scenery and much more.

Durban today is not only a major city and port but also the holiday capital of KwaZuluNatal. A combination of bright sunny weather and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean combine to draw crowds of visitors to the ‘Golden Mile’, Durban’s beachfront area, which offers fabulous sandy beaches patrolled by life guards. Beach front restaurants and bars, high-rise holiday blocks and smart hotels, not to mention amusement parks, craft markets, souvenir shops, all add to the holiday atmosphere. There’s jogging, cycling, swimming, surfing, talented sand artists and paddle boating. Alternatively you could rent one of the brightly coloured rickshaws, which have become a landmark of the ‘Golden Mile’. The beachfront even boasts an aerial cableway running along the promenade, providing a bird’s eye view of all the activities below, which is a great way to get your bearings! While in Durban it’s worth vising the internationally known and acclaimed uShaka Marine World, Africa’s largest marine theme park. Housed in a giant ‘shipwreck’ there’s an excellent aquarium, snorkel tank and dolphinarium, as well as thrilling water slides at Wet ‘n Wild. It’s also possible to enjoy a gourmet meal, in the wreck, with the thrill of watching the sharks close by. However there’s more than simply beach life in Durban. The city centre has plenty of fascinating colonial-style buildings; now used as museums or galleries. The city’s Natural History museum, in particular, is well worth a visit. Durban’s port is the busiest in Africa, and the lively waterfront is fringed with colourful restaurants, bars, shops and live music venues. The harbour itself is hectic with tugs, luxury yachts, huge container vessels and small tourist boats on the move all the time.

www.specialisedsouthafrica.com.au

The city is also a good gateway for some of the excellent resorts north of Durban. For a slightly quieter experience head to the stretch of coast about 30 minutes north of Durban and stay in areas such as Umhlanga Rocks or Ballito - both offer beautiful stretches of sand and good quality accommodation and restaurants.

Umhlanga is sometimes called the ‘new city centre’, with its impressive mansions, glittering office blocks and stylish beachfront apartments. The beautiful ‘Dolphin’ Coast region stretches from the Tongaat River south of Ballito to the Umhlali river further north. There are numerous resorts nestled along this stretch which is the area for frequent sightings of bottlenose dolphins playing in the Indian Ocean waves.

A short drive inland takes in the spectacular Valley of a Thousand Hills, with breathtaking views as far as the eye can see, a fascinating introduction to Zulu culture, and all kinds of arts and craft shops. Further west is the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands for even more arts, crafts, food and culture. The Drakensberg Mountains are one of South Africa’s finest World Heritage Sites with spectacular with ancient San artwork adjoining the walls of caves and crevices.

The renowned Garden Route encompasses a lush and highly attractive stretch of coastline between Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay. It stretches from the east of Cape Town, reaching all the way to the Wild Coast and deep inland. The route boasts an amazing treasury of a rare combination of spectacular mountain ranges, plains, lake areas, indigenous forests, National Parks and coastal stretches of white sand and the crystal shimmering blue water of the Indian Ocean.

Once the route moves up the coast and inland the lushness changed into the stark semi-arid landscape of the Karoo region. This is where its possible to take a tour of the fascinating Cango Caves, with their magnificent limestone and ice formations, and visit a working ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn, with the chance to even take a ride on an ostrich. The adventure rich Garden Route is world-renowned for its excellent variety of outdoor activities: from dolphin and whale sightings to bungee jumping, treetop canopy tours to sought-after golf courses and other more daring pursuits in the surrounding countryside. The area is also universally known for its oyster feeding, gourmet dining and its sophisticated fine arts; the garden Route hosts South Africa’s premier arts festival.

The route is perhaps most famous for its spectacular natural beauty, crossing magnificent mountain passes, winding gently along an unspoiled, rugged coastline and venturing deep into the awe-inspiring state forest in the Tsitsikamma National Park. Along the route are some of the country’s finest seaside resorts such as, Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness and maybe the most famous

58 EASTERN CAPE

www.specialisedsouthafrica.com.au

WESTERN CAPE

Port Elizabeth is the gateway to the Eastern Cape. The startling out-of-theordinary vistas will generously reward your eastward journey. South Africa’s Eastern Cape also boasts some of the world’s biggest surf waves, the only ski slopes in Africa, the highest bridge bungee jump in the southern hemisphere, and the chance to go on a ’Big 7’ safari.

The Western Cape is an extravaganza of experiences and a province of extraordinary diversity: whale watching at Hermanus, quiet strolls through the beautiful botanic gardens of Kirstenbosch, wine tasting at any of the legendary wine estates, spotting the Big 5 on a game drive through one of the wildlife reserves and if you’re brave enough you can even participate in shark cage diving. As if that were not enough, The Eastern Cape is home to first-class game reserves, both public and private, which invite you to see the Big 5. The Eastern Cape boasts the most concentrated elephant reserve in Africa as well as Addo Elephant Park, which is home to a herd of 300 elephants, providing a great opportunity for seeing elephants up close.

The Wild Coast in the former Transkei is where former President Nelson Mandela was born and is home to remote villages, many of which are almost unchanged since they were built. Here there’s quirky19th century architecture, with delightful rustic scenes and a warm country welcome.

The scenic beauty and the endless rhythm of the waves, makes this pristine coastline a place where solitude is easy to find. If you want to participate in a bit of star-gazing then visit the sleepy Karoo village of Sutherland, with its scintillating, starry night skies and its 11 world class telescopes.
