Caron Fanshawe Product Manager - Arblaster & Clarke

W

e are excited to announce the return of Caron Fanshawe. The former General Manager for Arblaster & Clarke with over 20 years of industry experience, Caron spent some time as a full-time tour manager before making her much celebrated return to the team as our esteemed Product manager. Caron's knowledge of the company, wine trends and overall passion are welcomed back with open arms and we can see her enthusiasm in abundance throughout our 2019 programme.

Morning at Te Mata, New Zealand 8

Caron's tips for travel in 2019 What is your favourite wine/travel memory? Being on the Sea Cloud in the harbour of St Tropez on Bastille Day – what a memorable experience! The harbour was littered with incredible super yachts, yet we were the star attraction. The Sea Cloud is beautiful, built as the private ship for an American Wall Street broker in the 1930s and faithfully restored. We enjoyed dinner on the deck accompanied by champagne from one of our long-standing friends, and after we watched magnificent fireworks. It was amazing and guests can experience something similar with our 2019 Wine Cruise (p80).

Where do you think is going to be the new top wine destination? Given the huge amount of land under vine in China now, this is certainly an area to watch. There are excellent boutique wineries in Ningxia and Xinjiang and there has been much foreign investment. China won 183 medals in the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, including 8 Golds, and we now see Chinese wines on our supermarket shelves.

The Great Wall of China

Which tour in the new programme are you most excited about? It has got to be New Zealand – the wine scene there is still relatively young compared to, for example, the main wine producing countries in Europe, yet the quality is outstanding. There is an energy and dynamism that encourages embracing new technologies, experimenting with non-traditional grape varieties and winemakers taking advantage of the opportunity to work a vintage in the Northern Hemisphere. There is strong regional typicity for example in Pinot Noirs from Martinborough and those from Central Otago, and we see more and more NZ Sauvignon Blancs labelled with their sub region and not simply Marlborough. Clonal experiments have led to a greater understanding of site specifics. The New Zealand tour in 2019 has Bob Campbell MW as the Wine Guide – not only is Bob very knowledgeable and great company, he is universally highly respected and he will certainly ensure that special bottles are opened for us.

What are your top tips for getting the most out of your wine experience?

Drink less, drink better! Be open minded – try wines and grape varieties that you wouldn’t usually gravitate towards.

Just because you didn’t like a wine or grape variety once, don’t write it off – keep experimenting!

Seek out the small independent wine merchants and explore their ranges.

Sample the fruits of Europe's wine labour When you think about wine, the places most synonymous with it tend to be France, Italy and Spain. It's no secret that Europe is home to some of the most well-respected wine regions in the world, but along with these usual suspects, there are other places worth visiting to taste the best this continent has to offer. From the food-lover's haven of Piedmont in Italy and surprising Slovenia, to the delights of Santorini and Alsace – there's no shortage of places to visit...

Historic town of Auxerre

Intro to Chablis & Burgundy 7th - 11th May

P

icture-postcard French countryside, delicious food and exemplary wines, this tour brings together the best that Burgundy has to offer. Burgundy's diverse landscape of rolling hills, forests and of course vineyards all criss-crossed with rivers and canals makes it one of the most beautiful regions in France. This area is rich in heritage shaped by Celts and monks from Citeaux and Cluny, and the Dukes of Burgundy have all left their mark with castles, picturesque villages and monuments which give the area its distinctive flair. The rich café society is evidenced by the luxurious boutiques and designer shops perfect for a spot of people watching or a little indulgence. The wines themselves need no introduction – from the steely, mineral wines of Chablis to the renowned wines from the Côte d'Or, all of which are excellent companions for the local specialties. Enjoy the simple pleasures of Burgundy on this tour with great food, excellent wine and stimulating conversation.

Burgundy village surrounded by vineyards

Church of Saint Etienne

Culture The heritage of this area is evident in every step with a proud history. Auxerre’s cathedral is well restored and worth a visit (Cathedral St Etienne). Whereas, St Bris is a picturesque old stone-built village beneath which are extraordinary medieval cellars. They cover over 60 metres underground.

Food

The two main grapes being grown are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Chablis is derived from the most northern part where the climate produces the recognisable steely whites, and further south are the fuller and riper styles of Chardonnay. This is Pinot Noir country with 31 Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits!

Enjoying a good meal is taken very seriously here, so much so that it’s more than a tradition. Most local towns and villages will have their specialities as well as the region having several Michelin-starred restaurants for those wanting something special. Dishes to try are the more local Bresse chicken, Charolles beef or escargots.

Abbey of Saint Germain d'Auxerre

Itinerary

1 7th May | London - Auxerre

This morning we will depart from London Victoria and embark on our journey to Auxerre. After settling into our hotel we will dine this evening at a local restaurant for our first group dinner together. Hotel: Hotel Le Maxime Picnic lunch & dinner included

2 8th May | Auxerre

After breakfast at our hotel, we will depart for our first winery visit with the Bersan family at Domaine Bersan. The Bersans are a very long-established winemaking family in St Bris, and their beautiful vaulted cellars under the centre of town date back to the 11th century. The wines of St Bris are perhaps better known by their old name, Sauvignon de St Bris, subtly different from a Sancerre Sauvignon – and a little cheaper, too. The Bersans’ top wine, however, is Chardonnay. The majority of their production is sold in bottles on the French market with only a little being exported. Next, we visit Domaine Emmanuel Dampt, one of our favourite places to stop in the whole of France. We are always warmly welcomed here, usually by Emmanuel himself, and their top three wines are their Grand and Premier Crus Chablis, and their Chablis Veilles Vines selections. We will be treated to an extensive tasting of their wines, followed by a gourmet picnic in the vineyard. In the afternoon, we will stop off in the small, but very pretty town of Chablis itself for a wander at our leisure, and then we will return

to Auxerre and our hotel. This evening, we are free to explore the city independently and can share our personal restaurant recommendations with you if you wish. Hotel: Hotel Le Maxime Breakfast & lunch included

3 9th May | Beaune

Today we drive to Burgundy and make Domaine D’Ardhuy our first visit of the day. This domaine sits in their monopole vineyard, Clos des Langres, on the border of the Cotes de Nuits and Beaune, and it boasts wines from both Cotes. They have six Grand Crus, 15 Premier Crus and 14 village wines. Here, we enjoy a traditional Burgundian lunch alongside an extensive tasting. This afternoon, we visit a small family owned estate in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, run by the charming Sylvain Bzikot. Bzikot Pere et Fils produces wines that have a natural feel and intense minerality. After an independent dinner, we return to our hotel, located just a short stroll from the town centre. 4 10th May | Beaune

Domaine Bernard Rion is one of the best producers in the village of Vosne-Romanée and we are lucky to visit here this morning. They have Grand Crus wines from Vosne-Romanée, Clos Vougeot and Chambolle-Musigny, plus Nuits St Georges, and this domaine has been in the same family since the end of the 1800s. After, we return to Beaune in time for lunch so you can explore this stunning town and sample its local cuisine at your leisure. Later in the afternoon, we make our way to Domaine Prieur-Brunet in Santenay, which produces wines from most of the classic villages of the Côte de Beaune. After a tasting here, we will continue directly to Restaurant Le Terroir, which is owned by the Prieur-Brunet family and boasts a Michelin “bib”. Our menus here are based on local specialities, and will be accompanied by a fine selection of wines. Hotel: Hotel de la Poste Breakfast & dinner included

5 11th May | Burgundy - London

This morning we check out of our hotel early and begin our journey north, stopping off at Champagne Moutard, a very exciting producer in the sub-region of the Aube and it is particularly well known for its use of unusual grape varieties. A member of the revered Moutard family, who have been based in this village since the 17th century, will join us for the tasting after our visit. Our lunch will be a picnic back aboard the coach as we make our return journey to Calais and then on to London, arriving late in the evening. Breakfast & picnic lunch included

While best known for its Riesling, there is also a great selection of other wines to discover. Mainly whites, such as Gewürtzraminer and Pinot Gris. Sparkling wine (crémant d'Alsace) is a nice aperitif and worth trying. Alsatian wines typically have slender bottles – called 'Flûte d'Alsace'.

The German influence is still evident in Alsatian cuisine. Pork is typical, and dishes are filling and rustic. Look out for Baeckeoffe, a stew of three meats, potatoes and about 10 spices, which is usually marinated in Riesling. The area is also famous for tarts, both sweet and savoury, and for its sausages.

This riverside region offers fish in abundance as well as gamey meat dishes combined with Anjou orchard grown fruits and rich-soil vegetables. To eat in the Loire is always an occasion. Château de Chambord

Itinerary September | London to 1 1st Orleans

We meet at the Green Line coach station in Victoria and drive to Newhaven for the ferry to Dieppe. En route, our two guides introduce the journey and history that lies ahead. On board the ferry we enjoy a Club Class buffet lunch. On arrival in France, we drive to the Château d’Anet, the home and last resting place of Diane de Poitiers, legendary mistress of King Henri II. After touring the château, with its panelled bedroom of the Royal lovers, we drive on to our hotel in the historic city of Orleans. Hotel: 4* hotel Dinner included

2 2nd September | Orleans

We spend our morning in Orleans, visiting the magnificent Gothic cathedral, the ancient city hall and the Hotel Groslot - where Mary Queen of Scots spent much of her first marriage to the teenage King Francois II, and also where the king died. After lunch, we visit a regional winery. Our final visit of the day is to the Château of Meung-sur-Loire, former palace of the Bishops of Orleans that was later used as a brutal jail. Here, the poet Francois Villon was kept in an ‘oubliette’ dungeon, but survived. We return to Orleans for dinner. Hotel: 4* hotel Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

3 3rd September | Blois

After checking out of our hotel, we drive to the nearby town of Blois on the Loire. This sprawling renaissance and Gothic château witnessed many momentous events in French history, but darkest of all was the double

24

assassination of France’s most powerful nobleman – Henri, Duc de Guise – and his cardinal brother in 1588, carried out by King Henri III’s bodyguards on the King’s orders. We take a guided tour of the château’s many rooms and then, after lunch in Blois, we visit the Herve Villemade vineyard at Chitenay – a biodynamic winery that grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay and more. Hotel: 4* hotel Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

4 4th September | Chambord

The magnificent Chambord awaits today. Originally a hunting lodge built by Francois I, the edifice grew and grew, reaching its present size of 480-plus rooms and a reputed 75 staircases – one probably designed by the artist Leonardo da Vinci. The treasures of the Louvre, including Leonardo’s ‘Mona Lisa’, were housed here in the Second World War. After our tour of Chambord, we pay a visit to the vineyard of Henry Marionnet Domaine de Charmoise at Soigns en Sologne. The location of its vineyards (the highest point between the Loire in the north and Cher in the south) benefit from a more continental climate, meaning the grapes enjoy a fantastic maturity and are protected against cold snaps, leaving an intense taste and aroma. Hotel: 4* hotel Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

5 5th September | Blois

We drive to Château Chaumont overlooking the Loire and enter the dark world of Catherine de Medici’s occult beliefs. A follower of astrology and black magic, the Queen consulted many soothsayers here, including the legendary Nostradamus. It was here that Catherine used a ‘magic mirror’ brought to her by her personal astrologer, the sinister Cosimo de Ruggieri, to foretell the grim prophecy awaiting her sons. In the afternoon, we visit Domaine des Grandes Esperances. This forward-looking winery pioneers two main points; sustainable viticulture and drinking enjoyment. The whites benefit from the siliceous soul and yield delicious, pure and mineral wines, while the reds are undeniably full and generous. Hotel: 4* hotel Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

With Lys Hall

With Lisa Hilton

A prolific historian and best-selling historical novelist, her books include 'The Real Queen of France', 'Queens Consort' and the historical novels trilogy 'Maestra', 'Domina', and 'Ultima'.

6 6th September | Blois

Today we visit Chenonceau, jewel in the crown of the Loire châteaux. Catherine de Medici threw banquets, balls and topless parties here, which often turned into orgies. Her daughter-in-law, Louise, went mad after the assassination of her husband Henri III, and haunted the corridors dressed in mourning. Later, we visit les Caves de Monce at Limeray, where five generations of the Catroux family have worked to offer delicious, delicate wines, typical of the Amboise region. The Cellars of Monce now sit on what was once a Cistercian abbey. Wines produced here include red, white and rosé. Hotel: 4* hotel Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

7 7th September | Amboise

The final full day of the tour sees us visit the Royal Château of Amboise. Charles VIII was born here and also died here in 1498 after hitting his head on a door frame en route to watch a game of real tennis. After touring the château, we have lunch at Domaine Huet at Vouvray and sample their elegant Chenins, and then we visit the fantastic winery La Grange Tiphaine in Amboise.

his tour mixes the urban elegance of Turin with stunning patchwork landscapes and delicious Italian food – and some of the best Barolos and Barbarescos. Turin is heavily reminiscent of Paris with its elegant tree-lined boulevards and chic cafés. However, Turin makes its own mark with its contemporary art and architecture, live-music scene and innovative food and wine culture, which are just waiting for you to discover. You will taste a selection of wines from the different villages and Crus of the Langhe. We also sample wine from Piedmont’s lesser-known grapes: Dolcetto d’Alba (bitter-sweet fruit, earthy and quaffable) and also Barbera d’Alba (dark, fresh, lively and elegant though often more serious barrique aged as well). The whites are also enjoyable – Moscato d’Asti is frothy, aromatic and fun, whilst Roero Arneis packs a big aroma over an elegant wine. Over a series of lunches and dinners as guests of the wine estates, you will taste the whole panoply of these wines.

On this very special tour, you will discover tannic, complex Barolos and Barbarescos, made from the great Nebbiolo grape, which age superbly. These more widely known varieties are accompanied by aromatic whites, including Moscato d'Asti and Roero Arneis, as well as the more commonly accessible Gavi.

Piedmontese cuisine is widely regarded as the best in Italy, combining the influences of the Royal House of Savoy with outstanding local produce. The region’s cheeses are excellent and include Bra, Toma and Castelmagno. Another speciality is hazelnuts, and here they are often mixed with chocolate, for truly irresistible Gianduja.

Itinerary

1 22nd April | London to Turin

Our trip starts with a flight to Turin and upon arrival we transfer to the area of La Morra. This morning, we visit the G. D. Vajra Estate for a tour and tasting, where owner Aldo Vajra prides himself on his traditional approach to wine-making. He explains his approach, saying that "traditional wines are more elegant, with more delicate perfumes, leaner, somewhat difficult, but offering more pleasure at the table". We continue to the village of Monforte d’Alba to enjoy lunch at the highly respected Giardino de Felicin, where our Piedmontese menu will be paired with a selection of Langhe wines. After returning to the hotel in the late afternoon for some time to relax and revive our tastebuds, our dinner this evening will take place just outside of La Morra at Ristorante Bovio, which overlooks the vineyards. Today we begin at the iconic estate of Gaja. For many oenophiles, this name truly is the epitome of incredible Italian wine. Back in the 1960s, Angelo Gaja began revolutionising the extremely traditional region of Piedmont by turning accepted viticultural and vilification methods inside out – causing something of a local revolution. Today, his renowned Barbaresco Crus reach legendary and often stratospheric prices. From here, we continue on to the noble estate of Tenute Cisa dei Marchesi di Gresy, situated just outside of Barbaresco within the Langhe and Monferrato zones. It’s the only estate in the DOCG to have sole ownership of one of the top single Crus of Barbaresco, the Martinenga vineyard. We taste wines over lunch at the estate, including their two award-winning Barbaresco wines from 100% Nebbiolo – the Martinenga and Camp Gros. After a busy start to the day, we enjoy some free time to explore Alba. In this attractive town, we have a chance to stock up at some of its great delicatessens. Regional delicacies include delicate soft tomini (cheese), which is marinated in olive oil with white truffle, and the addictive cunesi (a dark chocolate rum truffle).

Friuli & Slovenia 13th - 18th October

R

olling vineyards, lush green forests and snow-capped mountains form the backdrop to this exhilarating wine tour. We mix two fantastic wine-growing regions, namely Friuli and Slovenia, which focus primarily on white wines. Interestingly, you’ll be able to taste the same grape variety cultivated in different soils and climates. The tour covers Friuli’s wine region of Isonzo del Friuli and then, in Slovenia, we visit the wine area of Primorska. The culture and gastronomy of these areas are equally as diverse as their wines, and offer a mixture sure to tempt every palate. We look forward to exploring their unique tastes and traditions.

Friuli has an outstanding reputation for its white wines, and the area uses a mix of both local and international grapes to great success. Some of the best dessert wines come from this area and one to look out for is a Ramandolo. The Primorska region is renowned for exceptional strong, dry wines such as Rebula, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, to name but a few.

Influenced by a mix of Slavic, central European and Venetian cooking traditions, these areas have a host of dishes for us to try. Typically, you’ll find polenta is popular, cooked and served in a variety of ways. Another dish to try would be gubana, which is dried fruit wrapped in dough.

Itinerary October | London to 1 13th Venice

Departing London for Venice, where on arrival we will take our coach transfer through the charming and historic town of Udine, to our hotel. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to explore. Wander the colourful, ancient streets and discover the Piazza Liberta or the Piazza Matteotti, which is surrounded by porticoes that give it a unique open-air lounge atmosphere. Enjoy the Duomo or the Gallerie del Tiepolo (the Patriarchal Palace) with its collection of Giambattista Tiepolo masterpieces. In the evening, we’ll gather for welcome drinks and a wonderful Italian dinner. Hotel: Astoria Hotel Udine Dinner included

2 14th October | Isonzo

After breakfast, we start our day with a cellar tour and tasting within the DOC area, Isonzo. The good soils and excellent temperature variations create a unique mix for some very excellent white wine, and wines from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay have pushed this region in to the spotlight. The traditional reds tend to have softer, rounder flavours. Fine examples include Malvasia Istriana, Friulano and Pinot Bianco. After a lunch at your leisure to enjoy some of the local cuisine – risotto is particularly good in this area and works very well with the region’s wines – we will enjoy a visit to a beautiful countryside villa for further tastings. Dinner this evening is included at a nearby restaurant. Hotel: Astoria Hotel Udine Breakfast & dinner included

3 15th October | Isonzo

Today’s tour delves further into this fantastic region by visiting Vie di Romans in the heart of the Isonzo, which produces different styles of mainly white wines. The intensity of the Pinot Grigio (100% barrel fermented) is quite a surprise to those used to the rather bland interpretations of this variety in the UK. After our tasting, we depart for a lunch at a nearby restaurant, Livio Felluga, before finishing the day’s visits with a free afternoon. Tonight, we enjoy a lavish dinner, where we can surely enjoy further wines that have been selected to complement our menu. Hotel: Astoria Hotel Udine All meals included

Today we make our way to Slovenia after breakfast. We cross the border for our first visit in the Primorska region, at Edi Simcic. The soils are rich with salts and minerals, which add to the full-bodied and fresh whites. Edi Simcic uses barrel fermentation – even for his whites. We are privileged to taste his complex yet smooth wines at the estate. From here, we continue to an included lunch at a local restaurant, where we can savour

A gorgeous sunset over Oia, Santorini

Crete & Santorini 19th - 24th September

A

s the oldest wine-making nation in Europe, the Greeks have their roots firmly based in the past, at times glorious and at other times sad. Ancient techniques such as sun-drying the grapes to make divine sweet wines and occasionally adding pine resin to wine can still be found here. A new generation of wine-makers is exploring the 300 or so Greek grape varieties and the ‘terroirs’ that produced the wines that held the world in awe. Crete has been a wine island since the time of the Minoans, with the fame of its wines peaking around the time of the Venetians. Nowadays, dynamic companies are making modern wines from traditional and ‘international’ grape varieties. Santorini is famous for potent, intense and very dry white wines made from Assyrtiko, and the finer examples from top producers can age for at least a decade. Ancient Assyrtiko vines cling precariously to the slopes of the dormant volcano. 34

There has been a sigificant improvement in the quality of Greek wine in the last 10-15 years, and the wines from both Crete and Santorini are no exception. We will taste the full range on this trip, from Santorini’s steely, mineral Assyrtiko right through to the red Liatiko, expertly made in sweet and dry styles.

Aegean cuisine is simple. In Crete, specialities include kakavia (fish soup flavoured with lemon, wild onions and herbs) and kalitsounia (savoury stuffed pastries). There is an abundance of wild greens - horta - which are picked fresh from the Cretan hills, and cheese drizzled with honey is a long-standing favourite at breakfast.

2 20th September | Heraklion

We start our day with a guided tour of the legendary ruins of Knossos. Situated on the north point of the island’s main wine-producing area, the palace was semi-restored in the 1900s by Arthur Evans. Following this, we visit Boutari, one of the most well-known Greek wine producers. This beautiful modern building is set on a small hill within its vineyards and here we enjoy a tasting. After lunch at a local restaurant, we enjoy another tasting

Our first visit this morning is to the archaeological site of Vathypetro, which has a Minoan wine press as part of the palace complex, built around 1580BCE. Rhous Winery (formerly Tamiolakis) is our next stop. Here, Maria Tamiolaki and Dimitris Mansolas are continuing the tradition of preserving local varieties through their experimental vineyards, planted to varieties that were close to extinction. They are expanding their range through the purchase of grapes from vineyards under contract, which are then cultivated to their specifications. After lunch, we head to our old friends at the Lyrarakis Estate who first got involved in viticulture back in 1966. Both indigenous and international varieties feature with some interesting blends of the two. The winery is dramatically situated in the foothills of the Lassithi mountains and our time here is, as always, sure to be extremely enjoyable. We return to Heraklion at the end of the afternoon and the rest of our evening is free. Hotel: Olive Green Hotel Breakfast & lunch included

Delicious Cretan white wine 36

This morning’s visit is to Silva Daskalaki in the Siva wineproducing region. The family first produced wine in the late 19th century. The winery underwent a complete renovation and upgrade to the state-of-the-art facility it is today, and it produces a good range of local and international varieties, including Emilia – a sweet red wine made from local Liatiko grapes, which are dried before processing and create a wonderfully concentrated wine. After lunch, we move on to Douloufakis Winery, now run by the third generation of the family in the small village of Dafnes, where wine was first produced in the 13th century.

Today the estate vineyards cover around 20 hectares at altitudes of up to 350 metres. There are both still and sparkling Vidianos, as well as an interesting dry red from Liatiko. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its two principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera. Upon arrival, we head to the Vassaltis Winery, known for its dry white wines made from 100% Assyritiko grapes. Following the tasting we have some free time in the town of Oia, in the north of the island, for lunch. A rich combination of small white houses tiering the hillside and affluent captain's houses, Oia is one of the most photographed places in the world. This afternoon, we visit the Gaia estate. A winery that is practically on the beach, it started life as a tomato factory and is now an impressive state-of-the-art affair. Assyrtiko is the white wine for which Santorini is known and Gaia undoubtedly produces some of the finest examples. However, we also get the opportunity to taste the wines Gaia produce from their winery and

Vineyards of the Douro Valley

Walking the Douro 15th - 20th April

T

he Douro Valley is one of Portugal’s most beautiful wine areas and home to its famous port, an increasingly popular table wine. The Douro’s richness is not just limited to its wine. Its heritage stretches back thousands of years and was influenced by Romans, Suevi and the Visigoths, to name but a few. Their footprints can be seen in the stunning architecture as well as beautiful monuments that are scattered across its unique landscape. Join us to discover the spectacular UNESCO-listed Douro Valley Wine Region, a traditional place born into the culture of wine production. Visit the most famous wine estates, taste delicious port wines and enjoy the local specialities – all in great company.

Authentic painted pots

Culture The traditions of Douro are clear to see with numerous UNESCO sites, museums and its medieval centre, where gold-leaf-laced churches abound. There is a contemporary buzz of chic boutiques, café culture and gourmet restaurants here, too. This interesting dichotomy makes the Douro a flexible destination perfect for every lover of wine. 50

Grape harvest in the Douro Valley

Wines Douro’s unfortified wines are receiving as much interest as its fortified. Douro's reds deserve to be celebrated for their full body and ageing capacity. The liqueurs produced in the region, which are the result of the mixture of spirits and fruits (such as the arbutus, blackberries or cherries) are delicious served as digestifs.

Local Portuguese custard tarts

Food The Douro comes with a cuisine to rival its wines, including a wide variety of hearty meat dishes on offer. Specialties include roasted baby goat with rice and potatoes, wild boar stew and partridge. Being located on the Douro River, it shouldn't come as a surprise to find that fish is also a great alternative – especially the codfish.

With Ronald Weustink Having worked in the Dutch wine trade for eight years before moving to the Douro in 2001, Ronald managed Quinta do Passadouro for a number of years before moving to the traditional old wine village of Provesende. An acute observer of the Douro and Port trade, he is both well-known and widely respected in the Douro, as well as a friend to many local winemakers. He has been guiding Arblaster & Clarke tours for over 10 years now.

1 15th April | London to Porto 4 18th April | Pinhão This morning we fly from London to Porto, arriving in the early afternoon. We transfer up to the Douro Valley and check in to our hotel, Quinta de la Rosa, which has been in the Bergqvist family for over 100 years and produces a good range of ports as well as wines – oh, and they even produce their own olive oil! We will visit the vineyards here before enjoying a group dinner and tasting. Hotel: Quinta de la Rosa Dinner included

2

16th April | Celeiros

Leaving after breakfast this morning, we will travel to Provesende before walking to Celeiros, ready for our first visit to a Quinta. Here, we will enjoy a tour and tasting before a scenic picnic lunch in Paradelinha. This afternoon, we continue our walk through the vineyards before a second tasting at a port estate run by a husband and wife wine-making team. We come together this evening for dinner. Hotel: Quinta de la Rosa Breakfast, picnic lunch & dinner included

3

17th April | Passadouro

After fuelling up at breakfast, our third day is spent walking through Pessegueiro in the Viseau district. Our first Quinta visit will deliver some intense and complex red wines for us to taste. We once again enjoy a picnic for lunch before travelling away from the river and into the hills for our afternoon tasting at a small but excellent estate, which still uses its old vines. Here, their ports drink well at a young age, but also age superbly and they also host a range of delicious reds as well. Returning to Passadouro this evening, we will have another included group dinner. Hotel: Quinta de la Rosa Breakfast, picnic lunch & dinner included

Travelling to the point where the Douro and the Tedo rivers meet, our first tasting is at an 18th century estate where traditions from Burgundy and California come together to create new distinctive Douro wines. After a tasting here, we walk to a neighbouring Quinta where they produce a whole host of delicious drinks, from vintage ports to LBVs, old Tawnies to ancient Colheitas, and modern table wines. Impressively, their whites are also generally considered to be the best white wines from the Douro. After lunch here, we travel to Warre's for another tasting before a walk to the port town of Pinhão. We return to our hotel this evening to freshen up and then an included group dinner awaits. Hotel: Quinta de la Rosa All meals included

5 19th April | Pocinho

We begin our day with a lodge visit to one of the most famous names of port for a tasting of some of their finest vintages. Hopping on a train from Pinhão, we travel next to Pocinho where we lunch at a Quinta that produces both wines and ports, made on specially selected land, considered relatively flat to allow mechanisation. We have a tasting here and a visit to the museum, and then we return to Pinhão for a farwell dinner at our hotel. Hotel: Quinta de la Rosa All meals included

6 20th April | Porto to London

Today we make our way back to Porto, where we board our return flight to London. Breakfast included

Champagne season all year round There is never a bad time to take a trip to France's magnificent Champagne region and this year we have two departures to choose from. Experience the delights of a spring tour in April, or a brisk November break. Whichever date you choose, you'll be enjoying trips to well-known houses such as the legendary Taittinger as well as paying visits to lesser-known producers. On our Champagne Weekends, we can offer you exclusive access that only our 30-year-old little black book can secure, and these whirlwind escapes are equal parts unique and decadent.

A decadent champagne tasting 52

Sampling champagne at Taittinger

Champagne Weekends 27th - 29th April | 30th November - 2nd December

W

e travel to Champagne by both coach and Eurotunnel, staying in a central 4-star hotel in Reims. This stunning city is home to many of the great names in Champagne: Krug, Roederer, Cattier, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Taittinger and Charles Heidsieck all have their cellars here. The city has a long and interesting history, and was very important in the Latter Roman Empire. There are several monuments still in evidence dating back to that era, including a Triumphal Arch, the Forum and the stone quarries or crayères, which are still used as cellars by many of the regional Champagne houses. The 13th century cathedral has wonderful gargoyles and statues, such as ‘The Smiling Angel’; and fine stained glass, including windows by Marc Chagall. The early Frankish Kings were all crowned here and the Kings of France continued this tradition. During the First World War, Reims was besieged and partially destroyed. Thankfully, some of the most beautiful and impressive buildings, such as the Cathedral and the Palais de Vergeur, remain. Today, Reims is a lively commercial centre and university city. Our hotel is in the city centre, which has a very good selection of shops, delicatessens, wine stores, cafés, brasseries and restaurants that are bound to suit all tastes and budgets. 54

Champagne bottles ageing in a local Reims cellar

Experience Tastings in the Montagne de Reims at the family-run Champagne Bernard Hatté et Fils Sample the UNESCO World Heritage status Champagne Taittinger Return home with up to 36 bottles of the best selections from our various tastings

Take in the architecture of historic Reims, including the stunning cathedral and the Palais de Vergeur Enjoy not one, but two champagne breakfasts during this indulgent tour Lunch at André Jacquart & Fils, with personally presented champagnes from the owners

We select a good range of Champagne houses to visit from Arblaster & Clarke’s years of experience, so that you have a great choice of champagnes to buy, and we will taste around 20 different champagnes over the weekend! The vintages and special cuvées from the top houses can be much better value when bought on location, and the top quality, smaller producers that we visit have excellent quality and great value champagnes. You can bring back up to 36 bottles per person, plenty to keep you going over the following months or for a special occasion – or simply so that you can continue your champagne education at home! We travel by coach as it is a comfortable, hassle free and convenient way to get to the region, and means that it is easy for you to bring back lots of champagne! We do everything possible to ensure that you have a very comfortable journey and are able to put your feet up, read a book, catch up the week's news, sleep or just enjoy the scenery. Our Tour Manager will serve complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits a couple of times throughout the journey, and there will be no distracting background music or videos to watch. Pure bliss.

Illuminated Reims Cathedral at sunset

Itinerary

1 Reims

We depart from London in the morning and stop off briefly on arrival in Calais, to allow you to stock up on French cheeses, wine and bread to enjoy en route – all of which will surely make the journey pass pleasantly and quickly! We arrive into Reims between 1600 and 1700 local time. This evening, your Wine Guide will choose a selection of champagnes in order to introduce us to the various styles, different houses and growers in what will be a fun and illuminating evening. No two of our tastings are alike and no two Wine Guides have the same approach to presenting them. However, you will always taste a diverse range of different champagnes. Most will be very much to your liking, but perhaps some less so as we like to seek out unusual wines along with those you may not be familiar with. Your evening will be spent at leisure. Reims has a wealth of wonderful restaurants and bistros from those boasting two Michelin stars (early booking essential) to more reasonably priced gourmet restaurants along with traditional style brasseries. We will provide a list of all our tried and tested eateries before the trip, so you can book ahead if you wish. However, we will make a reservation at one of our favourite reasonably priced brasseries and you are more than welcome to join our Wine Guide or Tour Manager for dinner if you would like to.

56

2 Reims

Your tour manager is on hand to exclusively serve guests with a glass of champagne to accompany your buffet breakfast – breakfast at home will never seem the same again! Afterwards, we depart for the first of our visits to a champagne house. Champagne Bernard Hatté et Fils is a small family-run champagne house, where traditional methods are used to produce their champagnes. They have 8.5 hectares of vineyards, planted partly with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, from the Grand Crus village of Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims region of Champagne. They also produce Pinot Meunier from their vineyards in the Vallée de l’Ardre, allowing a diversity of blends from all three grape varieties in their champagnes. In 1952, after a long career as a wine-maker at Louis Roederer, Bernard Hatté’s father produced his first bottles of champagne under his own label. Now his son Christopher, his wife Carolle, and their two daughters run the house. The passion for champagne production has been passed from generation to generation. After our visit, you will have free time to explore Reims. Why not choose a café table to sit at and people watch while you enjoy some local food and perhaps a glass of champagne? In the First World War, Reims was besieged and partially destroyed Thankfully, however, some of the most beautiful and impressive buildings – such as the Cathedral and the Palais de Vergeur – remain. The rebuilding process resulted in many fine buildings with extra 'art nouveau' touches. Reims today is a lively commercial centre and university city. It was very important in the latter Roman Empire and there are several monuments still in evidence dating back to that era, including a Triumphal Arch, the Forum and the stone quarries or crayères, which are still used as cellars by many champagne houses. The 13th century cathedral has wonderful gargoyles and statues, such as ‘the Smiling Angel’; and there are fine stained glass windows, including a spectacular piece by Marc Chagall. France continued this tradition. This afternoon, we visit the great Taittinger. Champagne Taittinger remains one of the few top houses owned and actively run by the family named on the label, and their significant vineyard ownership makes them the second largest domaine holder in the Champagne region, providing them with uninterrupted quality control from vine to bottle. Many of their champagnes, such as their top prestige cuvée Comtes de Champagne, are matured in Taittinger’s UNESCO World Heritagelisted, 4th century Roman cellars. The hallmark of their wines is the high percentage of Chardonnay used, which gives them elegance, delicacy and – of course – finesse. *For our April departure, our morning visit will be to Champagne Brice* Breakfast included

3 Reims

After our second champagne breakfast today we check out of the hotel and have a morning visit to Champagne Brice. Interestingly, Champagne Brice featured on the itinerary for our very first champagne weekends! They are based in Bouzy, but also have vineyards in Cramant and Verzenay. The Brices have taken the decision to produce a range of non-vintage mono-crus champagnes that age well. Remi Brice is a charming and charismatic host, who will be sure to maximise your enjoyment of this region of Champagne. For lunch, we dine at André Jacquart & Fils, based in the Premier Crus village of Vertus. They own 24 hectares including a substantial holding in the Grand Crus-rated Le Mesnil sur Oger. They are one of the larger 'grower producers' in Champagne and without doubt one of the best. Chardonnay is their main cepage and their range of champagnes display a richness and complexity that comes from the base wines having been largely fermented in oak barrels. Over lunch, Marie Doyard, who co-owns and runs this property with her brother, personally presents their wines to us. Departing here, we make our way back to Calais for our return journey to the UK, arriving in London at around 2200h. *For our April and December departures, our morning visit is to Champagne House Cattier* *For our December departure, Day 2's morning is spent at Champagne Mailly & we have lunch at Canard Duchene on Day 3. Breakfast & lunch included Hotels: Mercure Cathedrale (March departure) Hotel de la Paix
