Special Interest Holidays
Welcome Dear Adventurer, The new year is fast approaching and, with that in mind, we are truly delighted to present to you our brand new collection of special interest holidays for 2018. We have been working closely with our incredibly talented tutors to select destinations that will inspire and to plan itineraries that will both enchant and engage every kind of traveller. Creating our new collection of trips has been a real labour of love. Our influences for designing these tours came from a variety of factors, ranging from the meditative and introspective effects of walking, and the creative and emotional freedom that can be experienced while painting, to the empowerment and inclusion one can feel during a group vocal performance. These powerful examples of shared human experience along with the importance of connection are the things that drive us to return with new tours year after year and your overwhelmingly positive responses to the holidays you have with us make it all worthwhile. We can't wait to help you make lasting memories in the new year.
Ian Finlay Director Authentic Adventures

PAINTING HOLIDAYS • AN INTRODUCTION
A passion for painting & walking What could be more meditative than capturing a landscape in glorious watercolour or exploring areas of outstanding natural beauty on foot? Follow rivers and coastlines, paint mountains and charming waterfront towns, and lose yourself in the culture and atmosphere of your chosen destination. Make lasting memories on one of our painting and walking holidays.
Frequently Asked Questions How will my holiday work? We travel to different locations on most days. We offer a range of demonstrations, special one-toone tuition, reviews and even an informal end-of-week exhibition. The ramblers among us will enjoy engaging guided walks and, where required, we take air-conditioned coaches or public buses at both the start and finish of the walks. Who will our tutors be? Our tutors are all professional painters, who are friendly, patient and encouraging in helping you develop, whatever your skill level. They teach throughout the day and there is some free time, although you may take as many breaks as you like. For the walks, we use experienced local leaders as it's important our routes are designed by people who live locally. 8
How large are the groups? The average is nine, but this can vary although they have very little impact on the locals and their environment. How do I choose the right holiday for me? Our tutors offer different styles, and the regions provide very different landscapes. Where walking is concerned, your choice will be based on the regions you are interested in, your ideal terrain and dates available. Who are the local support staff? Our tour managers or local guides are with our groups every day and tutors are left to Âconcentrate on teaching. What equipment will I need? We supply chairs and boards in almost all locations, and walkers will need suitable footwear, a small day sack for food and water, and waterproofs.
A full equipment list will be sent prior to departure. What if it rains? We ensure arrangements are in place for us to paint indoors if the weather is bad. How fit do I need to be? Some locations are hilly or involve boat trips, and some walking routes are more strenuous than others, but you can contact us for details. What can my non-painting partner do while I am occupied? Increasingly, partners and friends choose to come to enjoy the locations and share in the sociable evenings.

GREECE • CRETE & SANTORINI • PAINTING & WALKING
Itinerary Day 1 - Arrival day Our flight lands in the Cretan capital, Heraklion, our home for the next four nights. Once we’ve checked in the group splits for its afternoon activities: the painters start by sketching the serene and turquoise sea, the walkers will have time to explore the delights of this city. Tonight we reunite for dinner as a group. Day 2 - The birthplace of Zeus This morning, those with paints and canvases situate themselves on the Lasithi Plateau, a patchwork of fields and windmills encircled by looming mountains. Nearby, those with boots and daypacks walk to Psychro Cave, which is known in legend as the birthplace of Zeus. After lunch we return to Heraklion, where the painters carry on with their pieces, and the walkers enjoy free time. Day 3 - Knossos Palace Our destination this morning is the extraordinary Knossos Palace, which we tour together with a knowledgeable historian. Knossos is one of Crete’s foremost destinations: a sprawling set of ancient ruins, rediscovered in the late 19th-century. The palace is thought to have given rise to the myth of the Minotaur, and has been partially restored. Following lunch at a nearby café, we return to Heraklion for the afternoon. Once again, walkers have the afternoon free, while painters are invited to continue with their art at the hotel. Day 4 - Gorges, goats and islands Today the walkers are treated to a full day of hiking through the Samaria Gorge, one of the continent’s longest canyons. This is arguably the greatest walk on the island, and wends through an unspoilt natural park. Keep your eyes peeled for the Kri-Kri (a rare Cretan goat), and an abundance of other notable flora and fauna. Meanwhile, the painters spend their morning at Agios Nikolaos, an elegant coastal town
with wide boulevards and modern architecture. After lunch here they sail across to Spinalonga Island, a former leper colony that was cut off from the mainland by the Venetians. An evocative place for reflection. Day 5 - Santorini This morning we cross the Sea of Crete to the sunny archipelago of Santorini, arriving in plenty of time for lunch on the main island, Thira. Here we enjoy a suitably restful afternoon, either painting the island’s stunning features – its broad coastal views, blue-roofed buildings, and volcanic peaks – or setting out on a relaxed and scenic walk. Dinner tonight is served at our hotel.
Day 6 - Rocky seaside slopes After breakfast, those painting will turn their attention to Oia, an exciting mass of white-painted buildings, clinging to rocky slopes beside the sea. After lunch here, it is time to gather work together for an extra special exhibition. The walkers, meanwhile, spend their morning at nearby Thirasia, hiking through a landscape of monasteries, villages and geographical formations, before ending the day at the painters’ exhibition. Tonight we toast to the trip’s successes, with a final group dinner at our hotel. Day 7 - Departure day After saying our goodbyes, we transfer to the airport for our return flight home.
TRAVEL TIP Formerly known as Strongili ('the Round One'), the island suffered at the hands of a cataclysmic eruption thousands of years ago and its centre sunk, leaving a crater with dramatic cliffs rising on the east side. This, of course, is now the landscape that beautiful Santorini is known for. Be sure to sample this region's sweet, unfortified dessert wine, Vinsanto, which is amber in colour and is the product of an ancient wine-making tradition.

The remote yet beautiful Cinque Terre has inspired artists and poets alike for centuries, and little is changed today. Mountains that appear to dive into the sea, tiny fishing villages and brightly coloured houses that overlook harbours, it's easy to see why creativity can be easily inspired here. There are still only few roads, so we will let the train take the strain as we explore the five settlements of this enchanting UNESCO World Heritage Site. Boasting some of the most dramatic coastal scenery anywhere in the world, the five fishing villages that make up the Cinque Terre, namely Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, achieved World Heritage status back in 1997. Not only is this magnificent part of the world noted for its magnificent beauty, but it is a National Park and Protected Marine Area.

ITALY • CINQUE TERRE • PAINTING & WALKING
Itinerary Day 1 - Arrival day Our hotel, located at Monterosso al Mare, is just a short trip from Pisa airport. There will be ample time to enjoy the view, take a dip in the sea or just relax and do some sketching. Day 2 - Monterosso While Monterosso is famous for its gorgeous beach, perhaps its most eyecatching feature is the Monterosso Giant. This 14-metre high sculpture of King Neptune was built in 1910 by a sculptor named Arrigo Minerbi and it juts out dramatically from the cliff face, although today it is missing its arms. Walkers will take a short train ride across vineyards and fields that sit between rugged mountains and the sea to the famous Via dell'Amore. This stunning coastal path links Riomaggiore to Manarola and local legend says that this trail was once a meeting place for lovers from these two towns. Day 3 - Vernazza Painters will be in their element today as we drive to Vernazza, a little picture postcard fishing port that is perfect painted from on high. Colourful houses punctuate its marina and it makes for a very picturesque scene indeed. Here, we look down on its small harbour that boasts a tiny beach, which is tightly hugged by its church and surrounding town. The walkers will take another train ride, this time to Levanto. Passing a castle, we follow a picturesque ancient path cut into the edge of a cliff and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views along the way. We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing with our day. Day 4 - Corniglia Situated on top of a promontory, Corniglia is the most rural of the Cinque Terre villages. Surrounded by vineyards and terraces, this glorious location will undoubtedly broaden both our artistic horizons and our palette. It is so striking that Giovanni Boccaccio mentioned it by name in
'The Decameron'. If you prefer to take in the views on foot, walkers will sail to Porto Venere for a tour, taking in its old churches and Genovese castle. Later, we will continue on to Riomaggiore where we take the train back to meet the rest of our group. Day 5 - Free day Today we will indulge in a chance to unwind and take in our surroundings at a leisurely and independent pace. Visit neighbouring Genoa, Portofino or Riomaggiore. Take in the sights, find a local restaurant for lunch or dinner or perhaps do some shopping. Day 6 - Manarola A glorious day awaits and we begin by travelling high into the mountains
above Monterosso to the Sanctuary of Soviore. The very first written record of this historic building dates back to 1225. For the walkers among us, there will be a short train ride before we climb to the Madonna di Reggio Sanctuary, which is located on the hills behind Vernazza. A lovely woodland walk brings us to a second sanctuary before descending to Monterosso along an ancient pilgrims' path. This area, strewn with magnificent vineyards, is revered for its sweet Sciacchetrà wine. Day 7- Departure Day This morning we will transfer back to Pisa, where we will catch our flight home.
WHERE WE STAY The Cinque Terre is an artist’s delight, awash with colour and brimming with charm. The accommodation we will enjoy in this area is set in a quiet corner with great facilities, close to the region’s renowned walking areas. It is also close to local cafés where you can sit and watch the world go by when not walking or painting. Please note: all transfers here are by train so bear this in mind when packing!

Itinerary Day 1 - Arrival day Today we depart from London's Heathrow airport for our evening flight that will take us to Cochin. Day 2 to 5 - The Backwaters Upon arrival at Cochin airport, we transfer to our first hotel, the Cocobay Resort in Kumarakom. We will stay in this hotel for four nights and while here we will explore the surrounding canal systems by both land and water. Painting locations include a boatman's house, the waterside and the grounds of our hotel. Enjoy a sightseeing cruise before setting up to capture the scenery on paper and then returning to our hotel to unwind. This area is fascinating; a system of interconnected canals, rivers and lakes that span over 900km, with cities and dotted sporadically around it. Day 6 to 8 - Periyar Tiger Reserve We head to the wild landscapes of Periyar, where we will stay for the next three nights. Here, we will discover the town of Thekaddy and the surrounding spice gardens that are filled with fragrant cardamom, pepper, fenugreek and cinnamon. Optional activities include a Jeep safari to Tamil Nadu, a boat ride to see more of this part of the country, or perhaps a wild jungle walk and we will also take in a Kalaripayattu martial arts show on our sixth evening of this tour. Day 9 to 11 - The Western Ghats On the morning of the ninth day, we head to Munnar. At 1,500 metres and located in the Western Ghats region, this vibrant small town is set amidst the lush, green tea gardens that contour the landscape. We will be treated to a full day of painting at the glorious Eco Tones resort, there will be the chance to express our creativity at a working tea plantation, and we will also make a stop at both a tea museum and the Rajamalai National
Park. This particular nature spot is famous for the endangered mountain goat - the Nilgiri Tahr - and also for the Neelakurinji flowers, which blossom once every 12 years and are next scheduled to make a vibrant purple appearance in the summer of 2018. Day 12 to 14 - Fort Cochin The final stretch of this beautiful tour of southern India will be spent in Cochin. This ancient headland separates the backwaters from the Indian Ocean, and the wonderful buildings here are a reminder of this area's rich colonial past. A wonderful old synagogue, spectacular Chinese fishing nets that tourists flock to see and the burial place of Vasco de Gama - a Portuguese explorer who
was the first European to reach India by sea - are a few of the fascinating sights that we can discover here. The aforementioned fishing nets are fixed land installations and are still used for a unique method of fishing. We welcome everyone from all backgrounds and experience levels on our a cappella singing holidays. All songs are taught by ear, so you won't need to be able to read music or be part of a choir. Who are the local support staff? Our tour managers are with our groups throughout each day. They will focus on helping guests while our tutors are left to concentrate on singing. Local guides enable us to
discover unique locations, meet with local choirs and singing groups that may even perform with us, and find excellent restaurants to dine in. Accessibility Some of our locations may be hilly or involve boat trips, so please do check the itinerary pages and, if in doubt, call the office. Many of our singing holidays include gentle walks and local excursions. What can my non-painting partner do while I am occupied? Increasingly, partners and friends come to enjoy the locations and share in the sociable evenings. Discounts are always available and are detailed on each itinerary page.

Seeking the heartbeat of a country Explore cultural sights as well as the authentic, off the beaten track locations you might never discover otherwise. We dig a little deeper to uncover what makes a destination.
Frequently Asked Questions How will my holiday work? We have made sure that our sightseeing holidays vary enormously, and include both activities and sights that are relevant to the region in which they are based. For more detailed information, please contact our office staff who know the location and tour leader very well. Who will our tour leaders be? We cannot emphasise enough the importance of our local and passionate tour leaders. Without them, our authentic sightseeing and cultural tours would simply

not exist. The detail that they bring to each itinerary is what makes our tours extra special. Their in depth knowledge enables our groups to access locations that are otherwise off limits. All leaders are certified, trustworthy and always carry mobile phones with them. How large are the groups? We keep group sizes small to ensure a very personalised and unique holiday experience. How do I choose the right holiday for me? Our sightseeing holidays vary enormously and are specific to the
region in which they are based. For more detailed information, please contact our experienced office staff. What if it rains? Rain is rare in our locations and we select our departure dates carefully. However, should it arrive, we have comfortable hotels with great indoor facilities and spaces in which we can easily relax. Inclement weather doesn't need to stop a city tour or a visit to a museum, for example and our tour leaders have the flexibility to alter the itineraries if they need to.

Top Tips for taking the best sightseeing photographs: 1. Look for different and interesting angles from which to take photographs. 2. Make the most of natural features, such as trees or flowers to frame your subject. 3. Don't stick to one spot. Even the smallest movement can change the composition. 4. Take natural light into consideration. Utilising the 'Golden Hour' can produce stunning results. 5. If you want to showcase the scale of a place you're visiting, position yourself accordingly. SPAIN • ANDALUSIA • SIGHTSEEING
Itinerary Day 1 - Arrival day This morning we fly to Malaga and upon arrival we drive to Osuna, a charming town with distinctive Baroque style houses, where we check into our hotel and get to know each other over a welcome group dinner and drinks. Day 2 - Córdoba We drive to historic Córdoba, the ancient capital of Spain, where we walk through the old Jewish quarter. This network of narrow lanes is packed with history and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. In the afternoon, we will stop for lunch and then we will visit the Palacio de Viana. Here, we can explore this Renaissance palace's magnificent art collection, its 12 stunning courtyards and surrounding gardens. It was home to the Marqueses de Viana until 1980 and is now open to the public for tours of its antiques. Day 3 - Seville Today we tour three World Heritage Sites, all of which are picture perfect and ideal for our creative focus. We start out at the Museo de Bellas Artes, which is home to gorgeous artworks from the medieval period to the early 20th century. After a visit here, we walk via the city's Jewish Quarter to the Giralda Tower and Cathedral. The Giralda Bell Tower has been extremely well preserved and it is a magnificent sight to behold. Seville's cathedral, meanwhile, was constructed between 1434 and 1517 and is impressive in its scale. Following lunch, we wander through history on our way to the Alcázar of Seville - a breathtaking palace with lovely shaded gardens. Interestingly, several movies were filmed at this location, including 'Lawrence of Arabia' and Ridley Scott's 'Kingdom of Heaven'. Day 4 - The Doñana National Park Crossing the Guadalquivir River, we make our way to Doñana, discovering the different ecosystems of the
national park along the way - beach, dunes, pinewood, marshlands and finally an ancient village of huts. This area of outstanding natural beauty is a mosaic of land and water, which provides a fantastic habitat for birds and has become an important wetland in mainland Europe. Five threatened bird species also call this park home. Day 5 - Jerez Wine production, flamenco dancing and fine horses - an exciting chance to visit the area's famed Royal Riding School and also to take an exclusive tour of a traditional sherry bodega, where we will get to sample some of its amazing produce. Once we have enjoyed a private tasting here, we
will head back to Sanlúcar for the remainder of the afternoon. Day 6 - Grazalema National Park Today we explore the ecologically outstanding area known as Grazalema National Park. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere reserve back in 1977, it is revered for its rugged limestone landscape that boasts dramatic gorges, caves and cliffs. Afterwards, we make our way to Ronda and here, above the magnificent gorge, we enjoy lunch at the Parador. There will be time to explore this striking mountaintop city later on. Day 7 - Departure day We depart early this morning for our flight back home.
WHERE WE STAY We stay in three equally charming hotels on our cultural tour of Andalusia, all of which have been chosen both for their charm and also their convenience to the centre of town. La Casona de Calderon is a 17th century building in the heart of Osuna. Hotel Barrameda is a modern hotel situated in the central square of Sanlúcar. Hotel del Pintor is a boutique hotel located in the heart of Malaga's Old Town.

Nowhere gives a deeper insight into Roman life than the dramatic coastal towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The cataclysmic eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 had a phenomenal impact and now, two thousand years later, the sites of the Bay of Naples confront the modern visitor with a haunting, vivid immediacy unlike anything else.
The Minoans are best known for their huge labyrinthine “palaces” - the greatest of which, at Knossos, is said to be where Theseus slew the Minotaur. Beginning on the island of Santorini, we trace the full story of the Minoans, whose writing, organization and ambition had a profound influence on the development of ancient Greece.

Marvel in solitude at the cavernous Piscina Mirabilis at Misenum, which is specially opened for us. This gigantic cistern is truly a sight to behold and not only did it store water for the Roman fleet, it also fed the towns of the Bay of Naples. Vaulted ceilings, imposing columns and eerie light abound here.
We enjoy special access to the excavations at the Sissi Archaeological Project. These include an Early to Middle Minoan cemetery with house tombs (circa 2200 to 1700 BC). A rare chance to view parts of the site not usually open to the public.
