New for 2020 Oberammergau The postcard-pretty village of Oberammergau, set within the majestic scenery of Bavaria’s Ammergau Alps, plays host to one of Europe’s most engaging and spectacular cultural events – the once-adecade Passion Play. This theatrical masterpiece has a rich history, dating back to 1633, when the villagers vowed to stage the Passion every ten years if they were spared the Great Plague. Seemingly miraculously they were, and the first performance took place in 1634. The 2020 Oberammergau Passion Play will be the 42nd iteration, continuing a unique tradition that all the performers must be Oberammergau residents (either born there or having lived in the village for more than 20 years). With more than 2,000 villagers involved, it is an all-consuming project for the whole summer season, running from mid-May to early October. During that time an astonishing half a million visitors from around the world are set to attend the play. There is nothing else quite like it, and as the next opportunity to enjoy the play will not come around until 2030, now is the time to book! Andante Travels’ Oberammergau holiday includes the iconic Passion Play along with stays in Munich and Salzburg to appreciate the extraordinary history and musical heritage of these beautiful cities. Our fair British Isles have much to offer the archaeological enthusiast and this new 7-day tour showcases England and Scotland’s Roman remains. Starting out in York, where Septimius Severus set up his court, visit an array of captivating sites that tell the stories of the last emperor to make a serious attempt to conquer the north. Discover the important civilian and military site of Vindolanda, spend time exploring the ruins of the Antonine Wall, and examine the eastern defenses of Hadrian’s Wall. There is also the chance to stand before the Cramond Lioness, which was found in 1997 by ferryman Robert Graham.

The archaeological sites of Oman have only recently begun to be understood, but here we can explore a rich prehistory of Bronze Age tombs and Iron Age fortresses, as well as Classical trading settlements. A country whose landscape is punctuated by stretching deserts, awe-inspiring mountains and unspoilt beaches, Oman is a rising destination for the intrepid traveler. Admire the hand-loomed carpet in Muscat’s Great Mosque, visit Hasat bin Sult to see the 20ft rock decorated with ancient engravings of almost life-sized human figures, and pore over the collections housed within fascinating regional museums.

North India

Arriving into Delhi, this 18-day adventure will take you from UNESCO-listed sites and incredible monuments, to fascinating museums and areas of spiritual significance. The turbulent history and rich cultural heritage to be found here makes Northern India a spectacular place to visit. JOURNEY THROUGH WESSEX Visit the famous stone circle of Stonehenge 7 Days

From $3,295pp

2 departures May & August 2020

Nowhere else in the world could you find such an outstanding cluster of sites covering thousands of years within one small area. This tour takes advantage of the monuments of Wessex as a “textbook” introduction to the story of our human past in Britain. Follow us on a trip through millennia, from Prehistory to medieval Britain. Day One

We meet at our hotel in Winchester and enjoy an introductory lecture before sitting down to dinner.

Day Two

This morning, we visit the small, unassuming Wiltshire Museum in Devizes, home to some of the finest prehistoric collections in England. After lunch, we enjoy a walk around the countryside at Avebury, once an important ceremonial landscape, viewing the chambers of the Long Barrow on the hilltop at West Kennet and passing by Silbury Hill.

Day Three

We visit Salisbury Museum with its excellent Wessex Gallery this morning. In the afternoon, we explore the rich Prehistoric landscape at Stonehenge itself. Its world famous stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic, but there is already evidence of human activity dating back to the Mesolithic period.

Day Four

Today starts at Maiden Castle, stronghold of the Iron Age tribe of the Durotriges. Widely known for its impressive ramparts, it is one of Europe’s largest and most important Iron Age hillforts. We spend the afternoon at the Roman

Town House in Dorchester, where we view the excavated remains and the impressive mosaic floors.

SAVE UP TO $300 Activity Level Tour Highlights • Journey through time, visiting outstanding monuments from each period • Visit Old Sarum, Salisbury Cathedral and Winchester Cathedral in the company of an expert • Get first-hand insights from British archaeologists

Day Five

This morning we visit Fishbourne Roman Palace. It is assumed to have been the residence of Cogidubnus, a pro-Roman ruler of the local tribe of the Atrabates. Here, we will view the largest assemblage of in situ mosaics in the UK. The afternoon is spent at Portchester Castle.

Day Six

We travel to Bath to visit the Roman Baths Museum. Besides the vast pre-Roman and Roman collections in the associated museum, the complex comprises the remains of a Roman Temple and a Sacred Spring as well as the impressive bath house itself. Enjoy some free time this afternoon.

Day Seven

Our first visit is to Old Sarum, known as Sorviodunum in Roman times. Originating as an important Iron Age hillfort, it developed into a complete town with castle and cathedral by 1070. Our next stop is Salisbury Cathedral, with its important tombs and the world’s oldest, still-working mechanical clock. Before our tour ends this afternoon, our last visit will be to Winchester Cathedral, one of Europe’s largest Gothic Cathedrals.

PYRENEES ROCK ART

Travel alongside the leading expert on rock art worldwide 6 Days

From $2,695pp

19th - 24th October 2020

Created by our ancestors around 35,000-10,000 years ago, at a time when Europe lay in the grip of an Ice Age, cave art provides one of the most direct connections possible with our distant past. This tour takes us into these rugged mountain landscapes, where we delve into the artistic minds of our distant European ancestors. Day One

Arrive in Toulouse, admired capital of the Occitane region, and journey south to our hotel in the gorgeous town of Saint-Girons. This is nothing short of a relaxing first day and we have some free time to explore independently before enjoying a delicious dinner with our group.

Day Two

The day begins with a drive out to the Parc de la Préhistoire. Later, we visit the Grotte de Bédeilhac. Its massive cave mouth is large enough to land an aeroplane, as actually occurred back in 1972. Occupation here dates back at least 15,000 years.

This morning we drive out to the Grottes de Gargas, where we find cave art consisting of two different elements — both created in the Upper Paleolithic period of approximately 25,000 BC. We enjoy an afternoon visit to the rich Roman site of Lugdunum Convenarum, at the foot of the medieval walled town of St. Bertrand de Comminges.

Day Four

Today we visit the cave of La Vache, situated directly opposite that of Niaux, but much lower in the valley. This cave served as a living area for prehistoric people over several centuries and, although undecorated, it shows living floors and hearths. Fully prepared with this new-found insight, we go on to view the famous Niaux Cave itself. Here, we find one of the greatest and most powerful collections of Ice Age drawings that can still be visited. A sensational site, and one not to be missed.

Day Five

Our explorations today begin at the huge cave site of Mas d’Azil. This is a truly unique place to visit and we ensure that ample time is spent here in order to truly appreciate the finds. Our afternoon will be spent at leisure exploring this fascinating area. Of all Mesoamerican civilizations, the Maya have enjoyed the most enduring hold on the popular imagination. For years, their jungle-clad ruins remained intriguing but shrouded in mystery. However, recent progress in the decipherment of Maya writing has unlocked many of their secrets, revealing a society as complex and fascinating as their art and architecture had suggested. This is one of our most adventurous trips, starting with Mexico City’s fabulous museums, traveling via the uplands of Chiapas, along the river of Usumacinta, before driving up the Yucatan peninsula. Tour Highlights • View the Aztec Templo Mayor • Travel by boat and 4x4s to a range of remote jungle sites • Explore lost cities that are home to spectacular temples and palaces • View the vast Maya ball court at Chichén Itzá • Encounter enduring Maya traditions among the Chiapas communities along the way

Day One

Upon arrival in Mexico City, we transfer to our hotel, by Plaza de Armas in the Spanish Colonial center.

Day Two

Our day begins with an exploration of the remains of the Templo Mayor, once the sacred heart of Tenochtitlan. We also visit the site museum. Later, we see Diego Rivera’s murals at the National Palace.

Day Three

The National Museum of Anthropology awaits today, with its collections that span every era of Mexico’s richly textured past. We have lunch at the museum and there is free time to relax before dinner.

Day Four

Fly south to Tuxtla Gutiérrez, on the edge of the Chiapas Highlands. After lunch in Chiapa de Corzo, we drive to Colonial

1.Sunbeams at the Ik Kil Cenote 2.The legendary Chichén Itzá 3. The Pyramid of the Magician, Uxmal 4. A fruit market in San Juan Chamula

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, the center of traditional Maya culture. Later, admire products made by local Maya weavers who come here from nearby villages.

Day Five

A visit to Chamula gets our day off to a fascinating start. Here, the local community have been left to run their own affairs and instead of a Catholic clergy, traditional Maya priests or shamans minister to the local population. Lunch is in San Cristóbal and free time is followed by a visit to the museum at Casa Na Bolom, where we also enjoy dinner.

Day Six

Drive east to Toniná, a site that possesses the very latest Maya ‘Long Count’ date known, from 15th January, AD 909.

Day Seven

A full day among the ruins of Palenque is ours and here we enjoy magnificent views over the floodplain of the Usumacinta River. Abundant hieroglyphic texts here have been crucial in piecing together the story of Palenque’s rulers, a dynasty that lasted from c.430 to AD 800.

Day Eight

Hop aboard 4x4s this morning to visit the famous Maya site of Bonampak, known for its preservation of vivid murals. Next, take a motor launch boat to the jungle site of Yaxchilán. A remote, atmospheric place, many buildings here are well-preserved.

Day Nine

Today we drive to Campeche to explore its fine Colonial center.

63

Day Ten

Discover the remote site of Edzna, with its five-storey main temple complex and grand plaza. Next, we visit Sayil – a ruined Late Classic city that is said to have been home to a population of 12,000 during its peak in AD 850. Our day ends at Kabah, a site known for its ‘House of the Masks’.

Day Eleven

A morning spent in Uxmal, where we observe the Pyramid of the Magician. We also see its ‘Nunnery’ quadrangle and the House of the Governor. Later, we continue to Mérida, the Yucatán’s cultural capital where we have time to explore at leisure.

Day Twelve

Remain in Mérida today to visit the new Mundo Maya Museum. After, we visit the Franciscan Monastery at Izamal, which is built on top of a large Maya Pyramid.

Day Thirteen

The mighty Chichén Itzá awaits our discovery today. After lunch, we visit the walled city of Ek Balam, where we can climb the steps of the largest pyramid to enjoy marvelous views of the jungle.

Day Fourteen

Tour the ruins of Cobá today, home to over 30 carved stelae. In the afternoon, we visit the small walled site of Tulum – an important site in the late Maya period.

Days Fifteen

A leisurely morning at our beach-side hotel awaits before we transfer to the airport in Cancún for our individual flights home or onward travel.
