Welcome

Join Ian in Spain & Portugal, March 2018!

Dear Fellow Travelers, It is with great pleasure I present the new Archaeological Tours catalog, which contains our full program of tours for 2018, complete with prices and detailed day-by-day itineraries. I am always amazed by the breadth and depth of our journeys. Delving into this catalog, you will take a trip around the world as we present tours from Mexico to Malta; from the classical Greek islands to the remote silk road cities of Bukhara and Samarkand. As always, our team of expert archaeologists and travel professionals have meticulously planned each route to ensure that nothing is missed. As a result, our tours give you a 360 degree picture of the countries, cultures and civilizations (ancient and modern) that we explore.

A personal favorite of mine is our Greek Gulet Cruise, which first ‘set sail’ in 2017. Gulets are picturesque, traditional wooden ships and they are deceptively comfortable with modern conveniences fitted on deck and in the cabins. What better way to discover the lands of Homer, Aristotle and Socrates than sailing the gentle waters of the Mediterranean and sipping local wine as you pass sun-kissed ancient temples. More details on page 46. I do hope you find something within these pages that sparks your wanderlust, and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Yours faithfully, Ian Finlay

About us What can you expect when you travel with Archaeological Tours?

Superb Itineraries

If it’s on our itinerary, it has been personally researched and visited by at least one of our team. This way, we can ensure that when you travel to distant lands, you will be rewarded with deep insight into the archaeology, history and culture of your destination. This is just as true whether you are touring the mighty pyramids of the Egyptian desert, or walking through the prehistoric landscapes around Stonehenge.

Depth and Breadth

Ranging from 12 to 21 days, our tours allow you time to totally immerse yourself in the places we visit. For many of us, a trip to Ancient Egypt, Southern India or Central America is a once in a lifetime experience. We plan not only archaeological but art, music and cultural visits into our programs. You can’t go all the way to Malta and miss seeing the Caravaggio hidden away in one of the Churches of Valletta. Equally, you don’t want to miss the chance to view one of the finest art collections in the world at Russia’s wonderful Hermitage Museum.

offer sociability, companionship and a sense of shared experience, but most importantly they don’t crowd you or make you feel like you’re part of a herd.

A Sense of Adventure

Travel broadens the mind: it stimulates, educates and inspires. At Archaeological Tours, we never limit our ambition and seek out first-rate archaeology and history wherever it can be found. In 2018 you will find tours to Central Asia, Russia, Japan and India, as well as Latin America and Classical Europe. Even in the modern age of globalization, there are wondrous varieties of rich cultures, landscapes and histories simply waiting to be discovered beyond our own shores.

What makes us special? New to Archaeological Tours? Here’s what we have to offer...

Learn from the experts We are incredibly lucky to have some real stars of the archaeological and anthropological world leading our tours. We are delighted to welcome Jodi Magness, President of the Archaeology Institute of America, who joins us in 2018 on our May departure to Israel. “She certainly poured her heart and soul into making us experience the Etruscans as they lived. She entertained questions as well as being open to alternative ideas. Very approachable.” Professor Nancy de Gummond Etruscans 2017 “Clive was wonderful... Both in his (extremely well prepared ) lectures and his on-site guidance he has shown extensive knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm. His deep comprehension extends to far more than the immediate sites and he was able to make us see and understand the islands in both their uniqueness and as part of a larger whole.” Dr Clive Vella on Malta, Sardinia and Corsica 2017 “Dr. Larick was excellent. Not only is he very knowledgeable, he is very personable. He seemed to genuinely care that we had a good trip, got the most from the sites and had our questions answered.” Dr Roy Larick Caves and Castles 2016 6

Experience local culture At Archaeological Tours we believe that travel should truly broaden the mind, and we go out of our way to arrange unique experiences that allow you to interact with the local cultures and traditions of the places we visit. Experiences range from private, traditional dance performances in India, to tea ceremonies in Japan and to vineyard visits in Crete - where wine-makers still tread the grapes as they did in ancient times. It is the archaeology that people book for, but often it is these magical moments - meeting real people and making real connections - that our travelers remember the longest.

Make new friends

We welcome many solo travelers on our tours and we are always happy to pair up single clients of the same gender who wish to share a room during their tour. Some lifelong friendships have blossomed on our trips and we have many clients who choose to travel together year after year.

Stay in wonderful hotels We actively seek out the best available hotels in every country we visit, sourced by our own expertise, and have an extensive network of ‘on the ground’ local contacts. Some of our hotels are absolutely spectacular and previous favorites among our guests include: Mena House, Giza - located in the shadow of the Pyramids and surrounded by 40 acres of lush gardens, this historic building has hosted Kings and Presidents, and if you ask nicely the staff will show you the suite that Winston Churchill stayed in back in 1943! Minos Beach Art Hotel, Crete - right on the water’s edge, this 5* hotel is the epitome of understated luxury with its white-walled rooms that seem to perfectly complement the idyllic island surroundings.

Few natural sights can surpass the beauty and grandeur of Lake Baikal — a major highlight on our journey. Known as the ‘Pearl of Siberia’, it is home to a unique breed of freshwater seal and over fifty species of fish. We wind our way through tunnels and travel along cliff-hugging tracks above the lake with a vista of snowcapped peaks that form a perfect backdrop. To add to the grandeur of the day, our wonderful Golden Eagle train will be hauled by a Soviet Era steam locomotive on this beautiful section of the line. DAY 10: ULAANBAATAR

Upon arrival in Mongolia we visit its surprising and commercial capital, Ulaanbaatar. We have the option to travel out of the city and into the heart of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park to enjoy the beautiful scenery of wild Mongolia. spectacular. As we make our way towards the historically significant city of Vladivostok, we can learn a little more about its past. This area was of such vital martial importance that it was actually closed to foreigners between the years of 1930 and 1992. It is a breathtaking place with mountains, a whole network of bays and a magnificent bridge that crosses the Eastern

Bosphorous strait. The city is home to a diverse range of attractions, as well as many fantastic bars and restaurants that highlight the local flavor, and there will be ample time to discover some of these gems once we finally arrive here tomorrow. Hotel: Aboard the Golden Eagle All meals included.

Today we finally reach Vladivostok and have the opportunity to visit a number of interesting military attractions if we so wish. Aside from the preserved World War II submarine, which makes for a fascinating stop in itself, there is the Old Vladivostok Fortress. Interestingly, construction on this began after defense fortifications needed to be significantly improved during the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905. In 2016, a daily cannon shot was reintroduced to the area after this tradition, which had ceased eight years previously, was deeply missed and petitioned for by local citizens. The architectural heritage of the city is also incredibly rich and it incorporates the Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque and Asian styles into the buildings that stand there. To celebrate our final night, we join one last time as a group and have a special farewell dinner where we can toast the past two weeks. Hotel: Hyundai Hotel, Vladivostok All meals included.
