itinerary Day One

This morning, we depart from London for Italy’s vibrant capital city of Rome and, upon arrival, we transfer to our hotel where we unwind for the remainder of the day.

Day Two

A full and captivating day awaits us. We start today at the Colosseum for a special guided visit to this iconic monument of spectacle and blood. We will explore the extensive underground service passages and ascend to the upper levels of the mighty Flavian amphitheatre. The morning will finish at the other end of Roman history, with the extraordinary excavations at the church of San Clemente. We have lunch before an afternoon walk takes us from the Roman Forum to the Imperial Fora, and through the great administrative centre of Rome - from Republic to Empire. Our visits end at Trajan’s Column.

Day Three

We begin today at the world famous Vatican Museum, where we enjoy a guided tour of the highlights of this vast Papal collection of antiquities and art. In the afternoon, after we have lunch, there will be an opportunity for us to explore the architecturally striking St. Peter’s Basilica independently, before returning to the Vatican Museum for our special private visit to the Sistine Chapel. In contrast to our visits this morning, the empty, eerie and echoing Vatican Palace provides the perfect tranquil background from which to view the insistent masterpieces of Raphael and Michelangelo.

Day Five

Today is Christmas Day and we wake up to a leisurely morning, exploring the many interesting sites of the Field of Mars. We walk through the Largo di Torre Argentina and the Theater of Pompey before stopping off for a well-deserved cup of coffee. The remainder of our day will be spent at leisure, revelling in the festive spirit and perhaps enjoying some authentic Italian holiday traditions.

paintings during such a privileged visit is something that is sure to leave a lasting impression on any traveller. The frescoes that adorn the walls of this religious building were painted between 1481 and 1483, and are emblems of the Renaissance masters. Michelangelo, meanwhile, began painting the ceiling in 1508 and continued until he was satisfied, finishing the masterwork in 1512.

Pomposa

Take a boat out to the sanctuary of Barbana Island Bologna Ravenna

Indulge in a traditional Italian Christmas lunch See artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum Enjoy a glittering festive fireworks display

itinerary Day One

We arrive in Bologna and transfer to our hotel in Ravenna.

Day Two

We explore Ravenna and its remarkable collection of churches and monuments, including the Arian Baptistry and Bishop’s Palace, which are home to extraordinary early Christian artefacts from the city’s golden age. We end the day at the Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra, an innovatively excavated aristocratic house with vast mosaic floOrs. This location was an important archaeological discovery and it is a sight to behold.

Day Three

We begin at the astounding complex of buildings around San Vitale. We continue to Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, originally the palace church of Theoderic the Great, which boasts wonderful mosaics. Finally, we visit Sant’Apollinare in Classe, the ancient port of Ravenna. The great Church of Sant’Apollinare is found here, with its glorious apse mosaics and array of great marble sarcophagi of 6th century bishops and notables.

Day Four

1. The charming town of Cividale del Friuli 2. Andante guests celebrating the tour with a well-deserved drink 3. Admiring the striking interior of Pomposa Abbey near Ferrara, Italy 8

For more information call 01722 567687

We leave Ravenna, stopping at the great stone tomb of King Theoderic the Great. We continue to the Abbey of Pomposa, founded in the 7th century in marshes and lagoons, with an arm of the River Po running on each side. It is home to fine 12th century mosaic floor and frescoes. We stop at Comacchio - a miniature Venice of sorts - where we visit the Museo della Nave and its Roman ships. We then drive to Grado. On Christmas Eve, a fireworks display set to classical music takes place in the town square. Midnight Mass is an important Italian Christmas tradition and we experience this, but be prepared to stay on your feet if you join the crowds – it’s often standing room only.

special access

Our trip is made even more special by an out-ofhours visit to the Church of San Vitale. Considered to be a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, its interior bursts with colourful mosaics that depict Christian iconography and adorn both the walls and ceiling. Interestingly, it is also one of eight Ravenna structures that are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Sacrifices

from the Old Testament are immortalised here in glorious mosaic and the church’s octagonal plan makes for a truly fascinating - and visually captivating - visit. Both Roman and Byzantine design elements can be seen within this building, and it dates from the mid-6th century. Gaze upon decadent golds, vivid blues and deep greens as you revel in the atmosphere within this church.

Day Five

Today is Christmas Day and our morning is spent exploring Grado and its lagoon. We will take a boat trip in the morning out to the sanctuary of Barbana Island, originally founded in 582 and now housing a community of Franciscan monks. This tiny island is charming and is home to only an old church and monastery, but is still very much worth the visit. Afterwards, we stop to enjoy a traditional Italian Christmas lunch. The rest of our afternoon will be spent at leisure, allowing us to further explore the area or to continue the festive celebrations.

Day Six

Aquileia is one of the greatest cities of the Roman world. We explore the Cathedral and mosaics found under the campanile. Next, we take a walk along the ruins of the riverine port to the early Christian museum at Monastero. We spend the afternoon viewing the superb collections in the National Archaeological Museum, which showcases finds from local excavations.

Day Seven

We leave Grado and Aquileia behind and stop at Concordia Sagittaria, to see one of the most extraordinary excavations of recent years, the Apostolic Basilica. We then transfer to Venice for our return flights home or onward journeys.

Admire Klimt’s “The Kiss” at Schloss Belvedere

itinerary Day One

Upon arrival in Vienna, we check into our hotel and then take a walking tour around the city. Later, we enjoy dinner as a group.

Day Two

Our day begins at the Naturhistorisches Museum, which houses a remarkable prehistoric collection of artefacts. In the afternoon, we take a stroll around the city’s Christmas markets and revel in the festive atmosphere. This tradition dates back to the 13th century, when King Albert I granted permission for a December “Krippenmarkt”. Carols, Glühwein & handicrafts await us.

Day Three

Today is Christmas Eve and we begin with a drive out to the Benedictine Abbey of Stift Melk, overlooking the River Danube. A guided tour shows us the famous library, the masterful trompe l’oeil ceilings and the imperial rooms where Napoleon once stayed. After lunch, we visit the former summer palace of Schönbrunn. This building contains some 1,400 gilt-edged rooms as well as a sculpted garden complete with a maze and towering archways. It simply exudes Viennese opulence.

Day Four

1. Vienna’s picturesque Natural History Museum 2. A stall at the city’s atmospheric Christmas Market 3. The Christmas market illuminated by fairy lights 10

For more information call 01722 567687

We arise on Christmas morning to enjoy an indulgent breakfast at our hotel before wandering around another of Vienna’s celebrated festive markets. Following a delicious lunch, we tour the impressive Saint Stephen’s Cathedral - a striking fusion of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and boasting an imposing tower that is affectionately known to locals as “Steffl”. The remainder of our day will be free for us to bask at leisure in the city’s enchanting yuletide spirit. In the evening, we reconvene as a group and sit down to a decadent Christmas dinner where we can toast the season. Frohe Weihnachten!

special access

This delightful festive tour sees us granted very special access to explore the atmospheric crypt at Saint Stephen’s Cathedral. The underground catacombs here contain the mausoleum of the bishops, the tombs of Duke Rudolph the Founder and other important members of the Habsburg family. There are also 56 urns within this subterranean space that house the intestines of other

Hasburgs that were buried here between 1650 and the 19th century. Interestingly, Joseph Haydn performed here as a choir boy and Mozart got married here in 1782, so its history is incredibly rich and varied. This is one of Vienna’s most beloved landmarks and our private tour of the interior and underground spaces usually not open to the public will show us exactly why it’s so special.

Day Five

guide lecturer

Our morning is spent exploring the imperial sights of Vienna. Beginning at the Imperial Crypt, we learn about its history and discover tales of the 12 emperors and 18 empresses that lie among the vaults here. Our next stop is the Imperial Treasury, where we admire a glittering collection of secular and ecclesiastical treasures - the most decadent section of the Hofburg Palace. Highlights here include the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and the Treasure of the Order of the Golden Fleece. We tour the rest of Hofburg in the afternoon, a 13th century attraction still brimming with pomp & ceremony. In the evening, we are treated to a wonderful farewell dinner.

Day Six

There is time to fit in just one more excursion before we leave Vienna and we make Scholss Belvedere our final stop. The former summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, this majestic palatial complex is home to a world renowned art gallery, which includes the largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings in existence. Gaze upon “The Kiss”, admire the works of Schiele and take in a carefully curated selection of art that dates back as far as the Middle Ages. Once we’ve had our fill of visual splendours at this opulent residence, we transfer to the airport and return home.

Today, we make our way to the haunting and ancient city of Pompeii. Nowhere in the world offers a more comprehensive look at the compelling minutiae of everyday Roman life. Tour villas, bars and shops (and even brothels!), and visit a selection of recently opened sites that include the House of Paquius, which boasts a staggering array of magnificent mosaics.

Day Four

This morning we head underground, journeying below the streets of Naples to view the secret world that lies beneath. Our first stop is the Catacombs of San Gennero, where the patron saint of Naples was initially buried, before being moved to the Cathedral. We continue to the sprawling Bourbon Palace that now houses the Capodimonte Museum, and admire its collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics. Later, we celebrate New Year’s eve in style by attending a glorious ballet.

Day Five

1. The Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore in Naples 2. Part of the glorious interior of the San Lorenzo Maggiore church 3. Santa Maria Capua Vetere amphitheatre 14

It’s the morning of New Year’s Day and we get up close and personal with the evocative Piscina Mirabilis - a cliff-carved ancient cistern that stored water for the entire Roman fleet. From here, we continue to the Greco-Roman city of Pozzuoli to

special access

We are proud to offer exclusive access to the cavernous Piscina Mirabilis on this wonderful tour. Located at the harbour of Misenum, the giant cistern was built to supply the Roman fleet stationed there and was made entirely out of the cliff face. This site isn’t usually open to the public and we are able to enter it privately. It still stands proudly although it remains unused, but its

cathedral-like aesthetic and subterranean location makes for a truly atmospheric visit. The visually striking layout of its interior - 48 towering pillars and a barrel-vaulted ceiling - often sees it bathed in an eerie light. This is also the world’s largest Roman cistern and its level of technical sophistication continues to inspire awe in modern-day engineers around the world.

see one of the most well-preserved amphitheatres in the Roman world. We also visit a sizeable Roman Macellum and the Temple of Serapide before enjoying a decadent gala dinner at our hotel.

Day Six

Today, we have ample time to explore the many delights of Naples at our leisure. Take a reviving stroll beside the bay, relax with a traditional pastry at one of Naples’ historic cafés, or wander the bustling Neapolitan streets. A visit to the exceptional Naples Museum is also highly recommended, where a selection of captivating artefacts excavated in the local area are proudly displayed.

Day Seven

This morning, we visit the once prosperous city of Herculaneum, which was buried by deep pyroclastic surges hotter than those which simultaneously covered Pompeii. Unlike the latter, organic objects such as wood, cloth, food and skeletons emerged here from the ash in a truly excellent state of preservation. Evidence of Herculaneum’s earthquake damage is still visible on its many buildings today. Highlights here include marble-tiled shops, graceful boathouses where human remains were discovered, stunning mosaics in the House of Neptune and the House of the Beautiful Courtyard.

itinerary Day One

Upon arrival in Luxor, we transfer to our hotel and unwind.

Day Two

Our visits today are taken at a leisurely pace and we start at the fabulous Luxor Museum. Archaeological artefacts and works of Egyptian art are housed here. Later, we explore Aboudi’s Bookshop and then stop at Luxor Temple for a very special sunset visit, which is followed by a stroll through the souk.

Day Three

A boat trip across the west bank takes us to the incredible Valley of the Kings, where the most notable occupant is King Tutankhamun. We are granted very special access here to the Tomb of Seti I and, after lunch, we visit the Valley of the Queens and enjoy private access to the Tomb of Nefertari. Afterwards, our minds will be stimulated by a fascinating lecture.

Day Four

We begin at the Temples of Karnak, where we discover the three temples of the Theban Triad. This is the second largest religious site in the world after Angkor Wat. We discover the Temples of Amun and Khonsu before checking into our next hotel - a boat! Upon our return to Karnak, we tour the Temple of Mut and then sit down to an enchanting lecture and delicious group dinner.

We return to our boat for lunch and then enjoy a glorious afternoon of cruising on the water, before we are treated to another evening lecture and wonderful meal.

Considered to be the finest here, it is a truly beautiful tomb and one that remains in fantastic condition. We will also be given private access to the Tomb of Nefertari, which is located in the Valley of the Queens. This tomb in particular is often referred to as

the Sistine Chapel of Egyptian history and the paintings on its walls depict Nefertari’s journey to the afterlife, guided by the likes of Isis, Osiris and Hathor. Discovered by Ernesto Schiaparelli in 1904, this incredible space tells the story of Nefertari’s life and there is even a portrayal of the Queen playing a game of Senet (an ancient Egyptian version of draughts) painted onto the wall.

We explore the Temples of the gods of Upper Egypt today. We start at the Temple of Edfu and this magnificently preserved shrine is thought to have taken 180 years to construct. This complex houses a Nilometer - a structure made to measure the depth of flooding Nile waters. We also tour the Temple of Sobek, Horus the Elder, Kom Ombo, and the site museum.

Day Seven

Visit the impressive Temple of Isis in Philae this morning. The flooding of Lake Nasser caused the entire complex to be moved from its original location. From here, we visit Aswan Dam and then stop for lunch. Later, we see the unfinished obelisk and enjoy a sunset felucca ride to the gorgeous Botanical Gardens.

outhern Spain, rich in precious metals, wine and olive oil, has attracted the attention of many would-be conquerors over the centuries. From North Africa came the Carthaginians, who were followed by the city and road-building Romans. Then, the Visigoths erected churches that were eventually vanquished by the Moors. As Europe entered the Dark Ages, Al-Andalus flourished under its Moorish rulers, who fashioned marvellous palaces replete with dramatic arches, intricate artwork and manicured gardens that can still be seen in Córdoba and Granada today. From prehistory to the Renaissance, our tour moves through many vibrant ages.

beautiful Mediterranean island with a rich prehistoric, Classical and Medieval past. Recent research has pushed back the dates for the earliest occupation of Cyprus to over 10,000 years ago, and, over millennia, the people of this country have developed their own distinctive artefacts, buildings, art and culture. Dr. Paul Croft, who has devoted his career to the study of Cypriot archaeology, leads this enchanting tour.
