FESTIVE MADEIRA
Hallgrimskirkja in downtown Reykjavik
The classic ‘Golden Circle’ tour, for example, takes you to see the Geysir geothermal area, which gives its name to the spectacular natural phenomenon of a column of steam and water shooting high into the air, and Gullfoss, the queen of Icelandic waterfalls which at this time of year is partially frozen. Another popular, indeed unmissable, option is the Blue Lagoon, a naturally heated, mineral-rich bathing pool – just the thing after a few celebratory drinks and the included New Year's Eve gala dinner at our 4-star hotel. We are sure you will agree that there is no better place to enjoy the festivities than in Europe’s capital of ‘cool’.
14 Brightwater Holidays | Christmas & New Year 2022
What could be more exciting than ringing in the New Year in Reykjavik, where the party is sure to go on all night in the many cafés and bars, and amazing fireworks illuminate the sky? If you are lucky, you may also witness the fantastic sight of the aurora borealis, the famed northern lights. We also offer the opportunity to explore Reykjavik and the surrounding area, a stark but beautiful landscape of volcanic rock, snow-flecked hills, steaming geysers and frozen waterfalls.

The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland's most famous tourist attractions and considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as well as an unmissable part of any visit to Iceland. It is surrounded by a mossy lava field, offering incredible scenery, state-of-the-art facilities, a unique atmosphere, silica masks and water that make your skin extra firm, yet incredibly soft! It is possible to be sitting up to your neck in deliciously warm water while snow falls softly on your head, a truly unique experience!
(B) Day 3 - New Year's Eve Today you are free to explore at leisure or can join an optional excursion. In the evening, we sit down to a Gala Dinner at the Grand Hotel, a superb buffet featuring local specialities. Later we enjoy exclusive live entertainment on the top floor of the hotel with a fantastic view of the city's fireworks at midnight.
Join the hop-on, hop-off bus tour that takes in many of the outstanding sights of this modern, trendy and forward-looking capital city. They include the 73m high Hallgrimskirkja Church, which offers superb views over the city; the Pearl restaurant and exhibition center, which also offers spectacular 360° views; the National Museum of Iceland and Höfði House, one of the most historically significant buildings in Reykjavík.
This is a classic excursion that takes in the world-famous Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park. In Geysir, we will see numerous hot springs bubbling up from the ground, including Strokkur, which spouts high into the sky at regular intervals. Gullfoss is known as the queen of Icelandic waterfalls, where water tumbles into a deep meandering gorge, though at this time of the year much of the water is frozen into a fantastic ice sculpture. Thingvellir National Park is of geological interest as it is home to an exposed section of the Mid-Atlantic Rift, where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia come together. Thus, in geological terms, a drive through Thingvellir takes you from America to Europe in a matter of minutes!
THE BLUE LAGOON
Witnessing the northern lights is on the bucket list for many. This spectacular natural phenomenon, also known as the aurora borealis, is caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the Magnetic Pole. Experts decide the best location each night away from the city and sightings are not guaranteed and are of course weather dependent. However, you will still experience the Milky Way, stars, the moon and other planets, cloud formations and even total darkness. If you are rewarded with a display, expect to see colors of green, grey and white flickering across the heavens, a truly unforgettable experience!
