ince its inception over 25 years ago, Brightwater Holidays has provided tailor-made travel arrangements for many private groups and societies, with a dedicated Group Travel department providing a highly personal service. The itineraries and packages have been as varied as the groups themselves, ranging from a short city break to an extended tour of South Africa. Typically, tours include all transportation, accommodation and entry costs, visiting gardens, stately homes, art galleries and other specialist attractions depending on the group’s individual requirements. On most occasions we also provide an experienced Tour Manager, who will ensure the smooth running of the holiday, leaving the group organisers free to relax and enjoy themselves. We aim to understand fully the requirements of your group, so if you are a group travel organiser or a group of friends and would like some advice or a quotation for a tour, please contact our Private Groups Manager, Jenni Duncan, who would be delighted to help tailor a package for you. Remember it’s your tour, and we will try and supply the perfect holiday to match your requirements and budget.

ail away to lands steeped in history, wildlife and stunning scenery, far from the jostling crowds to the haunting beauty of the Orkney and Shetland Isles. Many people have landed there before you - some as early as 3000 BC. Most famous of all were the Vikings, but they were not alone and all around you will find historical treasures. Both islands, but particularly Shetland, in summer have virtually no darkness and the beauty of this “Simmer Dim’, as it is called locally, has to be seen to be realised. Orkney & Shetland have their own identity, Orkney being very green and fertile while Shetland has a more rugged cliff and sea loch scenery. However, they both share a colourful rich history of Picts, Norsemen, ancient antiquities, buried treasure and seafaring legends, bound up with an independent spirit that makes them different from the rest of Scotland. We sail with Serco Northlink Ferries and their modern purpose built vessels, the Hrossey and the Hjaltland.
Itinerary Day 1 We depart from our pick-up
points and travel north to catch our overnight ferry to Lerwick. We check in to our cabins and then enjoy dinner as a group in the ship’s restaurant. Inc. Meals: Dinner.
Day 2 After breakfast we leave the
ship and start our tour of Shetland. Our first stop is in Scalloway, where we visit the ruined castle built in 1600 by the infamous Earl Patrick Stuart. As we continue towards the spectacular cliffs of Eshaness, look out for the ‘Otters Crossing’ sign at the narrow isthmus known as Mavis Grind.

This afternoon we travel to the island’s capital of Lerwick. Enjoy some free time or take the opportunity to visit the state of the art Shetland Museum. This evening we sail to Orkney. Inc. Meals: Breakfast & dinner.
Day 4 We have a full-day excursion
the Prehistoric and Norse Settlement of Jarlshof, with over three acres of
of mainland Orkney visiting the many archaeological sites including the great stone circles of Brodgar and Stenness. We then continue to Maeshowe, which was raided by the Vikings in the 12th century, and is home to the largest collection of runic inscriptions to be found in any one place in the world.

he MV Lord of the Glens has become a familiar sight on the west coast of Scotland in recent years, slipping out of Oban Bay on the morning tide, nosing into remote Loch Nevis, negotiating the locks of Neptune’s Staircase or cruising the calm waters of Loch Ness. The ‘Robert Louis Stevenson’ restaurant presents cuisine using local and freshly sourced produce whilst the ‘Sir Walter Scott’ bar and lounge on the upper deck provides magnificent all-around panoramic views of the Highland scene. The six-day Highlands and Islands Cruise combines both fresh and saltwater cruising, as the Lord of the Glens sails between Inverness, Fort Augustus and Oban. These are wonderful times of year to make this classic Scottish journey, with the first fresh greens of spring and golden autumn colours reflected in the calm waters of the tranquil lochs. We begin at Inverness at the northern end of the canal and cruise Loch Ness to Fort Augustus, peaceful Loch Oich and onwards to Banavie in the shadow of Ben Nevis. Here we see Thomas Telford’s engineering masterpiece Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight interconnected locks that takes vessels back to sealevel near Fort William. We then sail out into the sea and cruise south towards Mull and Oban, where the voyage concludes. Shore excursions include a train journey and visits to the Glenfinnan Monument, Duart Castle and Tobermory.
Caledonian Canal
The eight-day Heart of the Highlands Cruise also combines sea and inland cruising, with the added attraction of the Isle of Skye and surrounding area. The ship sails from Kyle of Lochalsh to Skye, Mull and Oban and then through the Caledonian Canal to Inverness. Additional highlights include Inverie in Loch Nevis, one of the most remote locations in Scotland, and the picturesque town of Plockton. Shore excursions include Armadale on the Isle of Skye, the little islands of Eigg and Iona, colourful Tobermory and Eilean Donan Castle. In 2020, the Lord of the Glens will be joined by a new sister ship, Lord of the Highlands, offering further cruising opportunities - dates and prices to be confirmed.

T
aking place just once every ten years, the legendary Oberammergau Passion Play is a cultural and historic event unlike any other in the world. This bucketlist experience sees over 2,000 citizens of this small German town recreate Christ’s suffering, death and subsequent resurrection. Returning in 2020 for its 42nd performance, this event began in 1634 after villagers vowed a year earlier to recreate the life and death of Jesus once per decade if they were spared the Plague. This tradition has continued without interruption – despite major wars – ever since. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it can be yours next year. Prior to the Passion Play we will explore the neighbouring Austrian Tyrol. This is the land of storybook castles, dramatic landscapes and amazing stories. Hop aboard the Zillertal Steam Railway, admire Austria’s old-town streets and gilded architecture, and discover sites where ‘The Sound of Music’ was filmed. This part of the world was also home to Mozart, so lovers of the arts will be in great company.

tunning, isolated archipelagos carpeted by windswept landscapes and dotted with the remains of ancient cultures make Orkney and Shetland an archaeologist’s dream. Join us for this island-hopping tour, following experts as they bring the extensive relics of these regions vividly back to life. Scotland’s Northern Isles are imbued with an allure that’s hard to pin down. Gain a fascinating insight into Stone Age life at Skara Brae, where everyday objects such as beds and jewellery paint a full and telling picture. Enjoy an enlightening experience at the Tomb of the Eagles, where the mysteries of ancient Orkney can be unpacked. Marvel at the complexity of the former Norse settlement at Jarlshof as we consider the Scandinavian chapters of Scotland’s captivating past.
