“Hoping to return”
A guest who enjoyed our 5th October ‘21 departure of the Grand Tour of the Outer Hebrides told us how insightful they found the vacation:
A guest who traveled on our Iceland’s Northern Lights vacation on 14th November ‘21 revealed that this won’t be their last Brightwater tour:
“Having never been to the Outer Hebrides, it opened us to the natural beauty of the beaches and landscape, the long historical background, and the fascinating geology. It also allowed us to immerse in a very different culture in Scotland, with differing lifestyles and language..”
“My trip to Iceland exceeded all expectations. Everything – sites, accommodations, food, and especially our trip leader Alastair Walker – was outstanding. This was my first Brightwater tour and I certainly hope to return. Thank you, Brightwater.”

Islay and Jura
Can any three place names evoke the joys of Scotland’s great outdoors more succinctly than Stornoway, Skye and the Summer Isles? Stornoway, a stronghold of Gaelic culture; Skye, one of the most popular island destinations in Scotland and the Summer Isles – well, the very name says it all. Join us on tour and get to know them better. Enjoy a sunlit morning cruise aboard the fittingly regal ‘Summer Queen’, with the chance of spying a shy grey seal at the surface. Take a circular tour of Lewis, visiting an array of archaeological sites, and visit the lush sub-tropical eden of Inverewe Gardens, where we are at leisure to admire its wonderful specimens.
While visiting Islay, we visit the Bowmore Distillery – the oldest on the island – and we make a stop at Loch Gruinart RSPB Nature Reserve, where hopefully we have the opportunity to see many bird species. To the north-east is Islay’s neighbour Jura, an untamed and rather mysterious island with just 200 human inhabitants, dominated by the “Paps of Jura”. The northern end of the island was home to George Orwell, where he wrote his masterpiece “1984”. Here, we enjoy a scenic tour before some free time in Craighouse. Completing our trio of islands, there’s also an optional excursion to the tranquil little island of Colonsay.

We will be based for four nights at the 3-star Best Western Kinloch Hotel in Blackwaterfoot, on the western shore of the island, overlooking Kilbrannan Sound and the Mull of Kintyre.
This breathtaking itinerary, which features part of the scenic North Coast 500, pays visits to an array of stunning sites. We cross to Handa Island for some time to explore and spot wildlife, spend time at the late Queen Mother’s former vacation home, the Castle of Mey, and there’s even a visit to Smoo Cave, which not only boasts the largest entrance of any sea cave in the British Isles, but also has a blow hole. We also visit John O’ Groats, Duncansby Head and the Strathnaver Museum, the church in which it was housed dates from 1700 and takes us on a journey from the mystical past of prehistory through to the vibrant culture of today.

Gardens of Northumberland
Set among glorious scenery that includes the mountains of Snowdonia, dramatic seascapes and ancient castles, North Wales is home to some outstanding gardens. One of the best is Plas Cadnant, which 25 years ago was an abandoned wilderness of ivy and decrepit fruit trees. Its new owner has brought it back to life and, rather like Heligan in Cornwall, Plas Cadnant has emerged as a gem of a garden, full of interest. Further highlights include the private garden of Maenen Hall with its dramatic views of Snowdonia; Bodnant Garden, with a range of beautiful plants from all over the world, and Portmeirion – the rather surreal Italianate village.
The largely rural county of Northumberland is home to a range of individual and imaginative gardens, with each one giving an unusual insight into the pleasure of gardening in this most beautiful and tranquil corner of England. We continue to Mindrum, a large and generous garden, and then it’s on to Kirky Cottage. This tour combines the color, prestige and excitement of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show with some of the London’s finest gardens, affording the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of horticultural excellence. Nowhere is this excellence more apparent than in the perfectly manicured surroundings of RHS Garden Wisley, where our tour begins. Other highlights include the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew, the 17th century Ham House, Chiswick House with its neoPalladian architecture and Italianate gardens filled with temples, and the historic Chelsea Physic garden, where we learn about medicinal plants. We end the tour on a high as we visit the Sky Garden. Departing: 25th May
This specially arranged tour is led by Colin Crosbie, former Head Gardener to HM The Queen Mother at Windsor, who will give us personally guided tours of RHS Garden Wisley, of which he is a former Curator, and the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with which he has been involved for many years and has visited 29 times. During our time at Wisley, we will sit down to an exclusive private dinner. Then, to round off this memorable short break, we will stop at the Savill Garden at Windsor. Developed under the patronage of kings and queens, the garden began as a woodland garden, but has since evolved by incorporating new plants over the years. Departing: 27th May

Malta’s Archaeological Heritage
Bulgarian Archaeology
Malta’s diminutive archipelago is by no means any indication of the vast riches it holds — from the Neolithic to now, they are many and varied, and out there to be discovered on this special tour. Venture inside the walled citadel of Mdina, explore the warren of narrow tomb-lined passages of St Paul’s Catacombs, and take to the waves for a boat trip around the spectacular cliffs and caverns of the Blue Grotto. But most startling of all, perhaps, are the mysterious sites left by civiliziations with whom we are just starting to get acquainted — the millennia-old Mnajdra Temples and the megaliths of Ħaġar Qim, which make for an unforgettable archaeological expedition.
For decades after the Second World War, Bulgaria lay firmly behind the Iron Curtain and had little contact with the outside world, but in Classical times it prospered through trade with the Near East and was richly endowed with fine cities and monuments. Now, this fascinating and hospitable country is opening up once again and we are delighted to be able to visit a wide range of well-preserved archaeological sites, four of which are UNESCO-listed. Our itinerary includes visits to the famous Rila Monastera, Boyana Church with its outstanding frescoes, the Roman mosaics at Stara Zagora and the Horseman rock relief at Madara, among others.

Albanian Archaeology
In the company of a local specialist guide, we will tour a succession of sites from the rolling moorlands and sweeping beaches of Lewis in the north to the dramatic mountains of Harris in the south. This itinerary, which features part of the highly scenic North Coast 500, pays visits to Bosta Iron Age Village, the 5,000-year-old Standing Stones of Callanish and the Genealogy Center at Northton, a chance to get to know some of the factors which have had an influence on the development of the various Island communities. We also visit the well-preserved Carloway Broch, the Black Houses at Gearannan, the Norse Mill at Shawbost and Lews Castle.
After 50 years of political isolation, Albania is only just emerging as a vacation destination, with a refreshing lack of modern development and a timeless quality. In archaeological terms, it offers some of the best sites in Europe with a host of Classical cities that were once on a par with those in Greece and Italy. A dramatic landscape of high mountains and rugged coastline adds to the experience as we visit the best of this country’s sites. These include Durrës, one of the largest amphitheaters in the Balkans; Apollonia, the second largest Greek colony in Albania; the UNESCO-listed site at Butrint, dating from the 7th century BC, and the remote mountain city of Byllis.
