Let us tempt you with a new way to enjoy winter... We’ve enjoyed an incredible summer this year, but, if you’re anything like us, you’ll be looking forward to the changing of the seasons. We’re starting to daydream about frosty countryside walks, different climates and the kind of otherworldly experiences that tempt us only from afar. However, not all of our Christmas and New Year’s tours require you to wrap up warm... If you love the heat, why not escape to a destination that will give you sun as well as memorable experiences? We value festive traditions as much as you do, but why not start some new ones this upcoming holiday season? Yours Sincerely, Jackie Willis CEO, Specialist Journeys

Iceland | Northern Lights 18th - 22nd November 2018 Prices from £1,995 Experiencing the thrill of gazing up at the northern lights is a real bucket-list item, and this tour aims to realise this dream for its guests in Iceland. However, Aurora Borealis aside, this country is brimming with fascinating sites, natural wonders and rich culture. It’s unlikely that you’ll find another country that boasts such extensive otherworldly appeal: lunar lava-formed landscapes, thunderous waterfalls, moody geysers and blue-tinged, glistening glaciers – and those are just the geological bits! During our tour of Reykjavík, the world’s most northerly capital, it becomes clear that even Iceland’s man-made efforts have that same air to them, from the Lutheran church of Hallgrímskirkja (designed to resemble rock formations on the country’s coast) to the parliamentary buildings of Alþingi that are thought to be the oldest of their kind in the world. So, join us in Iceland for a chance to chase the northern lights and see its sights.

6 beautiful northern lights in all their glory The 16

Itinerary Day 1 We fly to Keflavik airport, arriving into nearby Reykjavík later in the morning. Upon our arrival, we check into our hotel and can enjoy a welcome drink before we sit down to our first group dinner.

Day 2 The city of Reykjavík and its sights await. We start at Hallgrímskirkja Church, the capital’s landmark with its magnificent 73m high steeple. We visit the Icelandic parliament “Alþingi”, founded in AD 930, and then continue on to the stunning Perlan. There is an introduction to the northern lights at Aurora Reykjavík and then we drive to Þingvellir National Park, towards Laugarvatn Fontana where we can bathe in its geothermal waters. After dinner, our northern lights hunt will begin. Day 3 This morning, we return to the stunning Þingvellir National Park, where the tectonic plates of Europe and North America meet. Here, we can see the mighty Gulfoss waterfall and the geothermal Geysir area, where Strokkur erupts every now and again. Later, we stop at the remote Skalholt church and then we continue to our accommodation in Hella, where little artificial light makes for fantastic northern lights viewing conditions. Dinner this evening will be served at our hotel. Day 4 A full tour of south Iceland is ours this morning and we pay visits to Skogafoss waterfall and the Skogar Folk Museum. There will then be the chance to walk behind the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which is an incredibly memorable experience. On our journey today, we see breathtaking views that include glaciers as well as the black volcanic sand coastlines. Day 5 Explore the striking Lava Tunnel in Raufarholsellir before returning home.

View over Reykjavík from the Perlan’s observation deck

Highlights • Go in search of the elusive northern lights after dark in locations with very little artificial light, making the hunt that bit easier to spot them • Walk behind the powerful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, with its drop of 200 feet • Relax in the comforting and restorative geothermal waters at the Laugarvatn Fontana lakefront spa

What’s Included • Services of a professional tour manager • Comfortable coaching throughout • Four nights’ dinners with wine, two lunches, and bed & breakfast • Porterage at the hotels and gratuities • Two nights in a hotel in Reykjavík and two nights in a hotel in Hella • Return flights from London to Keflavik

Jordan - Petra & the Desert Fortresses 20th - 29th November 2018 Prices from £2,995 Nothing can prepare you for standing before the magnificent rose-coloured, rock-cut façades of Petra. Lively, cosmopolitan and rich, with goods from every corner of the known world, ancient Petra was an extraordinary city. Its streets were swathed in a fusion of Nabataean and Classical architecture – elaborate tombs, colonnaded streets and temples carved into gigantic rocks. Its tombs and temples, however, only offer visitors a fraction of Jordan’s story. Explore traces of biblical tribes, Roman legions, Christian crusaders and Islamic caliphates in this promised land of archaeology and fascinating history. A wealth of unique experiences await on this tour, from the chance to feel weightless in the Dead Sea and time to cruise Wadi Rum’s striking desert landscape – made famous by the filming of “Lawrence of Arabia” – in 4x4s, to an exploration of the dramatic basalt city at Umm al-Jimal.

The 6 Treasury in Petra, known as Al-Khazneh

In the afternoon, we continue to Jerash with its fine architecture and its Oval Plaza. Day 4 Spend the morning in Amman, where we visit the Archaeological Museum and the citadel. From here, we view the Madaba mosaic map at Mount Nebo.

Day 5 The dramatic basalt city at Umm al-Jimal awaits us. Later, visit desert castles including Qasr Azraq and al-Kharanah, and see amazing wall paintings at Qasr Amra. Day 6 Visit the church and mosaics at Umm al-Rasas and then move on to the mighty crusader castle of Kerak, built in 1132 at the request of Jerusalem’s King Fulk.

Day 7 The first of our two full days in Petra has arrived. We walk into the site to gain a real sense of its scale and take an optional walk to the Nabatean ‘High Places’ point. Day 8 Enjoy another day exploring Petra and uncovering the stories that can be found here. During our visit, it’s easy to see why Petra is called the ‘Rose City’. Day 9 Starting at Beidha, known as “Little Petra”, we then drive to Wadi Rum and travel in 4x4s through desert scenery. Rock art sites can also be seen in this area. They make a jolly good setting for a delightful festive foray. While the lure of a far-flung Christmas holiday spent reclining on a tropical beach away from the cold can be all too appealing, we’re of the belief that those who succumb might be missing out! A Scottish staycation means waking up in the sheer luxury of a grand country house hotel, overlooking a landscape brimming with the promise of powdery snow and frosty walks (and, of course, the temptation of a warming dram by a crackling fire) – what more could you really want? This, and more, is yours when you choose to celebrate Christmas in the Scottish Borders with Brightwater. At lunchtime, we gather together as a group for a traditional Christmas carvery with all the trimmings (cheesy jokes and paper hats aren’t compulsory, but greatly encouraged). There is time to enjoy the Queen’s annual speech if you so wish and then we’re free to spend the remainder of the afternoon however we may wish. If you take a nap, be sure to wake in time for the evening buffet! Day 3 Your Boxing Day morning can unfold in one of two different ways. Embark upon a scenic coach tour of the Border country, which includes visits to delightful towns such as Moffat, Galashiels and Melrose.
