A Hidden Garden on Garland

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Near the busy intersection of Sycamore and Garland in Fayetteville, within walking distance of North Creekside Apartments and Willow Park Apartments, is an unexpected scene. Behind an old red barn, bees and butterflies flutter over rows of okra, greens, tomatoes, basil, and sunflowers while chickens cluck contentedly in a large yard. This is TriCycle Farm, a community farm open to all. According to founder Don Bennett, the farm operates under the rule of thirds. One-third of the food produced goes home with volunteers, while one-third is donated to the hungry, and the final third is sold to benefit the farm. The farm welcomes new volunteers at any level of experience. In addition to growing food, the farm offers classes, concerts, free acupuncture, and a Friday Farmers’ Market. You can connect with Tri-Cycle Farms on Facebook to learn more, but the very best way is to visit the farm. It’s always open, so walk on over!

This lawn at North Creekside Apartments will be transformed into community garden and outdoor kitchen. Join us November 6 to be a part of it!

FARMERS’ MARKET RECIPE

Basil is abundant at farmers’ markets. Grab a bunch and save the flavor of summer for the cold months ahead. INA GARTEN’S BASIL PESTO Ingredients 1/4 cup walnuts 1/4 cup pignolis ( pine nuts) 3 tablespoons chopped garlic 5 cups fresh basil leaves, packed 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/2 cups good olive oil 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan Directions Place the walnuts, pignolis, and garlic in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Process for 15 seconds. Add the basil leaves, salt, and pepper. With the processor running, slowly pour the olive oil into the bowl through the feed tube and process until the pesto is thoroughly pureed. Add the Parmesan and puree for a minute. Use right away or store the pesto in the refrigerator or freezer with a thin film of olive oil on top. Notes: Air is the enemy of pesto. For freezing, pack it in containers with a film of oil or plastic wrap directly on top with the air pressed out.
