WINTER 2017

Uptown Fayetteville Comes Alive with Art!

Our newest development, Uptown Fayetteville Apartments + Shops, is coming to life - not only with new residents and shops on the horizon, but with art! Fayetteville artist Olivia Trimble’s bright and lively ‘Uptown Quilt’ was recently completed. Easily accessed from the Mud Creek Trail, the mural features oversized quilt squares in a modern palette. Trimble says the mural is meant to evoke the warm and cozy feeling of being wrapped in a quilt. Coming in March, Rogers artist Steve Adair will paint the first of two murals on the north side of the property. The murals are part of a series called “Dapper”, works that are inspired by film stills, magazine ads, and family snapshots from 1950s. “I want the viewer to approach these works as they would a wall covered in graffiti, or an old weathered billboard, where the layers of different paint and texture create a history within the artwork,” said Adair. Arriving this winter, Craig Colorusso’s work, Sound Swings, will welcome visitors from the Mud Creek Trail. Sound Swings is an interactive set of swings – sized for adults – that play music. As Colorusso explains, each swing operates independently with its own section of the composition triggered by a participant. The music is made by an electric guitar; the lightness of the sound is designed to enhance the feeling of flight. From start to finish, the composition is 62,439 days long and the permutations are endless. Plan to explore public art at Uptown this spring!

Farmers’ Market Recipe FRYMELIZED ONION DIP

Ah... late winter, when our minds turn to savory dips and televised football. We found this great onion dip in the “Cooking Without Recipes” feature in Bon Appetit. Get a cast iron skillet pretty hot over medium-high heat, then pour in a few glugs of olive oil and dump in 3 sliced onions. Give them a quick toss, but then leave them alone for a few minutes until they start to take on color. Once they do, you’re going to want to keep stirring them—still over medium-high heat—regularly so everything is just on this side of scary burn-y. The goal is to frymelize the onions, and although “frymelizing” is clearly a word that I made up, it pretty effectively describes what I’m talking about. Basically, you want to caramelize onions over what most people would say is “too high heat” in an effort to produce the sweetness of low-and-slow onions with the funky bite of burger shackstyle griddle-fried onions. When all the onions are starting to get aggressively browned and the whole thing feels like it’s about to go off the rails, deglaze the pan with a generous pour (3 tablespoons or so) of fish sauce and then drop the heat to low. Let them simmer for another 10 to 15 minutes—you want them good and soft, but not onion jam-soft. Meanwhile, plop an 8 oz. tub of sour cream into a bowl and grate (or press) 2 garlic cloves into it. (Mom: If you’re reading this, yes you can substitute yogurt for the sour cream, but please use full fat and not the gross nonfat kind that tastes like chemicals. I love you.) When the onions are fully frymelized, let them cool for a few minutes before transferring them to a cutting board and giving them a healthy chop. Stir all that onion-y mess into your sour cream business, season with salt, and boom: You’ve got onion dip. Serve with potato chips (obvs) and tell all of your guests about how frymelizing changed your life.
