“ GET-MOVING CHECKLIST Emalie Cockrell As we transition from summertime leisure to the more structured days of autumn, many of us experience a natural desire to move more. However, our efforts at movement often happen in isolation: we go to the gym alone, we run or walk alone (or with our dog, who, while wonderful, doesn’t count as human interaction), and we commit to goals for ourselves alone. Movement takes on new motivation and enjoyment when it is accomplished alongside friends. We are more likely to follow through on a workout when we know someone is waiting for us. We will be more faithful to goals when someone else knows we’ve made them and may ask us about them. This season, as you start to think about committing to a new exercise program or training plan, consider asking someone to do it with you—consider moving together. Emalie is a graduate student of English Literature at the University of Arkansas and an avid trail runner. She and her husband Connor and their dog Karhu live at Eco Modern Flats.

Uptown Fayetteville's newest way to get moving together — Sound Swings are designed for people of all ages. When three people swing together, all three parts of a motion-activated musical composition will play. Swing by and try them out!

EMALIE’S FAVORITE WAYS TO GET MOVING TOGETHER CYCLING. With the Razorback Greenway outside our doorsteps, hopping on a bike is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to be active with a friend (or a handful). The trail connects to downtown Fayetteville, many breweries, even the NWA Mall. Next time you want to grab a beer or a coffee with your friend or neighbor, suggest that you bike there instead of driving. If you are unfamiliar with navigating the trails, stop by the Fayetteville Visitor’s Center on the square for a paper map, or visit trails.cast.uark.edu for an interactive digital map.

POOLSIDE/ROOFTOP YOGA. At Uptown and ECO Modern Flats, we have partnered with Trailside Yoga to bring free outdoor yoga classes to residents once a month. Grab your neighbor and your mat for a simultaneously invigorating and relaxing yoga class (see the feature on page 6). HIKING. You don’t have to go very far to find beautiful hiking trails in Fayetteville. Head to Kessler Mountain, a trail system in south Fayetteville, for 7 miles of quiet trails to hike. Access from Kessler Regional Park on Judge Cummings Road.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: BikeNWA The bike alliance of Northwest Arkansas

ounded in 1999 as the Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks, BikeNWA has been working for nearly two decades to make Northwest Arkansas a more bike-friendly region. They do this in two ways: by supporting and amplifying the work of local bike organizations, and meeting with local elected officials to advocate for better bike infrastructure and bike-friendly policies. As a business member of BikeNWA, Specialized has partnered with BikeNWA to offer bike maintenance classes and organized rides at our communities, including a bike tour of the art at Uptown Fayetteville earlier this month. bikenwa.org CONNECTION QUARTERLY: FALL 2017 • 5

DID YOU KNOW? We take the tenets of active design very seriously. In this case, we’ll take the stairs. By creating visible, enticing stairs to encourage everyday use, we hope to inspire everyone to take an extra step with us. With the help of local artist Olivia Trimble, the main stairwell at Uptown Fayetteville is now a little more inviting.
