BY JOE VEYERA Montana’s former Superintendent of Public Instruction is set to take the helm of Seattle Public Schools later this year. On Wednesday night, the school board voted unanimously to enter contract negotiations with Denise Juneau to succeed Larry Nyland as superintendent. Juneau — a Mandan Hidatsa Arikara tribal citizen — will become the first American Indian to lead the district. “I am ready to work with the school board to help them achieve their goals of educational equity in outcomes, closing the opportunity gaps, robust engagement with community and parents, and providing a quality education for all students,” she said in statement. More than 60 candidates applied for the position, a pool that was narrowed to three finalists. That trio — which also included superintendents from districts in Michigan and Colorado — was in Seattle at the end of March to tour schools, participate in a public forum, and interview with the board. During a session with the media during that visit, Juneau said she had conversations elsewhere, but “it never really felt right.” Seattle had what she called the right priorities, including equity for all and closing the opportunity gap. “I really think Seattle is poised to create a system where students are ready to ➧ JUNEAU, Page 3

Queen Anne coffee shop readies for unexpected move BY JOE VEYERA After nearly 20 years in Queen Anne, a neighborhood coffee cornerstone has been given until the end of the month to vacate its space on Queen Anne Avenue. But despite her frustration over what she says was an abrupt notice to vacate, owner Jill Killen is hopeful that El Diablo Coffee Co. won’t have

to move far. “We’re committed to staying on top of Queen Anne,” she said. “We’re committed to being in the neighborhood.” Killen has been scrambling since a courier handed the notice to one of the shop’s baristas late Monday afternoon, giving them until the end of the month to be out of the space at 1811 Queen Anne Ave. N.

For months, Killen said, she had attempted to work out a new long-term lease with the building’s owner, Erickson Family LLC, to no avail. The business was already paying market-rate for the space — which she says needed electrical and plumbing upgrades — but Killen did not get a response from the landlord to negotiate an agreement. When the Queen Anne Book Company signed a new fiveyear lease next door, she figured her business would be next. Instead, they’ve been forced to look elsewhere. “I just put $3,500 in the space that I don’t get to take with me, because the space was literally falling apart and work does need to be done,” said Killen, who also owns Royal Drummer Café in Ballard and Cloud City Coffee in Maple Leaf. “But they weren’t willing to work with me. Also proposed is the development of recommendations for the full electrification of the ride share and taxi fleet. But with that electrification comes the need

EDITORIAL

National Sinclair script undercuts work of all media outlets “This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.” Sinclair Broadcast Group had anchors and reporters at nearly 200 stations across the country say those words as part of promos bemoaning, “irresponsible, one-sided news stories,” and members of the media that, “use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda.” Of course, the script provided to each market didn’t address the irresponsible, one-sided news stories mandated as “mustruns” by the company itself, or the personal bias and agenda of its conservative owners. Instead the broadcaster is intent on sewing discord against the media as a whole, under the guise that they are the ones to be trusted and others to be looked at with a sense of skepticism at the least, if not outright cynicism. It is true that none of us should take what we read or see at face value; a critical eye for consuming news is not a bad thing. And no media organization is beyond critique, nor should it be. It’s the feedback from our audience that makes us better, and gives us a greater understanding of the stories that readers need to know. But what makes this effort from Sinclair so insidious is the attempt to create this dichotomy of “us versus them,” and instill a leeriness of the media in its entirety. There’s a difference between espousing your own values and commitments to journalism and saying that others aren’t getting the job done. The slogan of the New York Times is, “All the News That’s Fit to Print,” not “All the News That’s Fit to Print, Unlike Some of Those Other Papers That Peddle Falsehoods and Misinformation. You Can Trust Us Though.” The vagueness of the statement read by Sinclair anchors suggests that no outlet is to be trusted. Sadly, this latest display — in addition to the must-run segments — undercut the efforts of the hardworking reporters in the KOMO-TV newsroom, trying their best under less-thanideal conditions to provide local news each day. Many of them were there long before Sinclair took over the station as part of its acquisition of Fisher Communications in 2013, while others are reportedly hamstrung by contracts that include non-compete clauses and financial penalties for those who quit. But their good work is undercut by the efforts of their ownership to push their national agenda. And it makes viewers question if edicts from above are influencing their day-to-day efforts. We’d like to think that’s not the case. The fact that it’s even called into question is disappointing, because displays like that nationwide script are what truly erodes the public’s trust in the media. And you could even say that it’s extremely dangerous to our democracy.

Remembering Ray Jackson University of Washington Husky running back and legend, Ray Jackson, passed away recently at age 83. Star of the great Rose Bowl teams from the 1959 and 1960 seasons, he’s considered by many to be one of the best players from the “Coach Jim Owens era”. But Jackson’s contributions to our community went beyond his football career extending over decades. He also must be remembered as a pioneer in the fight for racial equality in sports here in the Northwest. Jackson also was a coach of mine who left an indelible mark on my life. After his career as running back, Jackson became one of the first two African Americans to coach football at “Huskyville”. The other was Carver Gayton, another outstanding Husky football player from Coach Jim Owens Rose Bowl teams. Jackson would leave football in the 70’s and go on to a successful career at Puget Power retiring in 1998 as its budget director. He also for many years was a boardmember and coach to Central Area youth, earlier a police officer, and always a community leader. For kids like me, growing up in the suburbs north of Seattle

OUTSIDE CITY HALL in the early sixties, during an era when Husky football was essentially the only game in town (along with hydroplane races), Ray Jackson was a legend. At that time, the town of Edmonds was uniformly white and middle class. I don’t think I ever met and got to know a black kid until I went to work in a lumber mill the summer before college. But that didn’t stop us from admiring and trying to emulate Ray Jackson and other great AfricanAmerican athletes who played for the Huskies, like George Flemming, Joe Jones, Charlie “he’s-stillfirst-downing” Browning, and Charlie Mitchell. First we played out our dreams in extremely rough sandlot full tackle (unpadded and unhelmeted) games with kids from other neighborhoods

and then on the junior high and high school teams. For my freshman year (19681969) at the UW I donned a Husky uniform with dreams of playing professionally. Several other players from the Rose Bowl era were on the coaching staff including Jim Lambright (later a head coach there) and Bob Schloredt. But the two coaches who motivated and inspired me were Ray Jackson and Carver Gayton. While most of the coaches were ‘old school’, aggressive and authoritarian — Schloredt regularly grabbed players by their facemask, violently shaking them senseless, and favored only the few players he’d personally recruited — Jackson and Gayton believed in positive reinforcement and inspiring players to do their best on the field and in life. They offered counsel to all, not just the favored few. My direct experience with Jackson and Gayton lasted only one school year. I got caught up in politics, disillusioned with football and left after freshman and spring ball. But what Jackson (and Gayton) offered, their lessons and influence on me, I have carried with me all my life and through my career as a homeless and housing advocate and organizer for 40-plus years in Seattle. It was only later that I came to understand the larger role these two and the other black athletes played at that time in addressing inequality within UW sports programs. Throughout the sixties, there was a high level of dissatisfaction among black players over how they were being treated. Those concerns came to a head in the fall of ‘69, the year after I left the program. In response Coach Owens called all 80 players into his office and demanded they pledge loyalty to his program. Four of the black players took the courageous stand of ➧ JACKSON, Page 5

And Jim Owens was revered by the white corporate power-structure and establishment, with influence rivaling the governor. While the school alumni and downtown crowd cheered Owens’ actions, all the remaining black players walked off and protests erupted in the black community. In the wake of the turmoil and national news coverage and intervention by Gayton, all but one of these players were even-

tually reinstated. Two years later in 1971 four other black players left the team. Following an investigation and recommendations by the UW regents, Owens hired Ray Jackson as a full-time assistant coach. Ray Jackson, Carver Gayton, Junior Coffey, George Flemming, Joe Jones, Charlie Mitchell, Charlie Browning, Harvy Blanks, Greg Alex, Lamar Mills, Ralph Bayard, Donny Moore, Calvin Jones, and others; these pioneering black ball players (and Jackson and Gayton as coaches) who stood up during the Coach Owens era played a critical role in reshaping not just of the football program but the

sports department in general. Unlike Coach Owens, not one of these ball players has a statue in front of Husky Stadium marking their contribution as early pioneers in the fight for racial equality on the field and in our community. They deserve it. Among these Husky legends, I am especially grateful for my direct experience with ‘Coach Jackson’. Thank you, Ray. I’ll always remember you. JOHN V. ➧ CLIMATE, from Page 2 are real barriers to electrification — both because of cost and availability of infrastructure.” And while transportation accounts for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions, building efficiency is another other major driver, with another set of proposals to address that sphere. “We are going to be really looking to make sure that we can set the bar for not just this area, but for the country on how we build and keep and sustain more efficient buildings,” she said. That means a new city-wide pilot — first announced during the mayor’s State of the City address in February — offering additional height and floor space incentives in exchange for significant upgrades surrounding energy and water usage, storm water management, and transportation efficiency for up to 20 major renovations in urban centers. Durkan also wants to expand City Light’s pay-forperformance energy efficiency pilot, and find funding to transition the 18,000 homes in the city that still use heating oil to electric heat pumps. Backed by the heads of Seattle Public Utilities, Finance and Administrative Services, and the Department of Construction and Inspections, the mayor said

she’s well aware that city agencies will have to work together on these new initiatives to hit the targets they’ve set. “We know that we can’t live in silos, and that we have to move together as a city across all platforms to get us more ecologically friendly,” she said. “It will be a challenge for us, but we’re up to the challenge.” City councilmember Mike O’Brien was on hand for Wednesday’s announcement as well, and said the plans were, “the types of commitments necessary for the city to be true leaders on climate change.” “The people of this region have long been fighters, fighting to protect the arctic from oil drilling, fighting new pipelines, fighting coal exports coming through our communities, but we know that if we’re going to solve climate change, we also have to make changes right here in our community,” he said. Durkan likened the latest plans to past environmental efforts — like separating garbage from recycling — where initial skepticism gave way to acceptance. “We can do this,” she said. “Seattle has led, and we will continue to lead.” To comment on this story, write to QAMagNews@nwlink. com.

POLICEBLOTTER The following are selected reports from the Seattle Police Department’s West Precinct. They represent the officers’ accounts of the events described. BY LYDIA SPRAGUE Overnight Burglary At approximately 6:45 a.m. on March 28, the owners of a home in the 3200 block of 36th Avenue West called 911 to report an overnight breakin. They told responding officers that the break in occurred while they were sleeping, sometime between 11:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. When they woke up that morning, they found several interior doors open and the front door unlocked, not how these doors were left the night before. The victims reported two cell phones and a laptop stolen from the downstairs study. None of the residents reported hearing any noises while they were sleeping. Mail Thieves Shortly after 12:30 a.m. on March 29, police responded to an apartment building in the 500 block of Aloha Street. The building manager reported there had been a mail theft the previous morning. The building’s video surveillance system captured two suspects entering the building by unknown means and approaching the mail room at about 1:30 a.m. the day before. The suspects opened at least four packages and took the contents before trying to force open a mailbox. Just Looking Just after 6 p.m. on March 28, police responded to an apartment building in the 200 block of Fifth Avenue North for a burglary that occured shortly before 3 a.m. that morning. The building manager showed responding officers video of two suspects prying the building’s exterior door open, then heading to the bike storage locker and prying its door open as well. The suspects looked around the bike locker but appeared to have left without taking anything. Officers warned the building manager that the suspects would likely be back, now that they knew they could easily pry the doors open. The building manager said she’d called a contractor who was going to come out and reinforce the doors. Everything and the Kitchen Sink

A little before 9:30 a.m. on March 20, a contractor called 911 to report the house he was working at — located in the 2800 block of 30th Avenue West — was burglarized, and a bunch of his tools were missing. He said he got to work at about 8:30 a.m. that morning and couldn’t get in the front door because someone had pushed his tile saw up against the door to keep it from opening. It took him several minutes to get the door open, and once he did, he found about $4,500 worth of tools missing. A basement window was found open, and its screen was removed. A red portable battery charger was found in the back alley. The burglar may have parked a car in the alley and loaded the tools in it. The contractor reported 24 tools and pieces of hardware stolen including the kitchen sink. Stolen Baseball Cards Shortly before 10 a.m. on March 30, residents of an apartment building in the 700 block of Second Avenue West called 911 to report a burglary, which occurred sometime between midnight and 6:30 a.m. The burglar pried open two mailboxes in the mail room before heading down to the parking garage. Once there, he broke into two storage units, stealing six boxes of collectible baseball cards from one storage unit. The victim told police he believed the baseball cards were worth about $10,000. The suspect also shattered one resident’s car window, stealing a pair of sunglasses and the remote to the parking garage door. Stolen iPad Just before 6:30 p.m. on March 30 the building manager of an apartment located in the 300 block of First Avenue West called 911 to report a burglary. He said there was security video of the suspect prying open the building’s front door at about 1:47 a.m. that morning. Once inside the building, the suspect roamed around before prying open the building manager’s office door and making off with a tablet computer. He also went down to the parking garage, but the manager said he wasn’t sure if he’d stolen anything else.

Giving Up Easy Around 4:30 p.m. on March 30, police responded to an apartment building in the 700 block of Seventh Avenue North for a burglary. The building manager told police there was video of two suspects picking the lock to the building’s front door. Once inside the suspects went down to the underground parking garage and tried the handles to several cars. Finding none of the cars unlocked, the suspects gave up and left. They were inside the building for about 20 minutes total. Compromised Garage Door Just after 1:30 p.m. on March 31, police responded to a burglary at a house in the 2500 block of 30th Avenue West. The homeowner reported that his daughter returned from work at about 11:30 a.m. earlier that morning, and found the front door standing open. He said he believes the suspect entered the house through the garage and exited out the front door. He found the garage door rolled up about two feet. The victim walked through the house and found multiple drawers open and rummaged through but nothing appeared to be missing. Two new smartphones — still in their boxes — had been taken from the house, but were later found in the front yard of the home. The homeowner did say his daughter was missing about 25 video games and some medication bottles. Failed Robbery At approximately 1:30 a.m. on March 31, employees of a store in the 100 block of Mercer Street called 911 to request assistance for a robbery victim that had just walked into the store. The victim, who had a laceration by his right eye, told police he’d been waiting at a bus stop a couple of blocks away when a small man tried to rob him. He said the suspect hit him on the side of the head with a small club. He said the blow caused him to lose consciousness for a short period, but the suspect didn’t actually take anything from him. Police searched the area for the suspect but weren’t able to find him.

Ask Dr. Universe Why do bees have pointy behinds?

SCHOOL MENU FOR SEATTLE PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS Wednesday, April 18 Breakfast: Yogurt parfait Lunch: French toast, eggs, and hash browns, or veggie burger

Dear Dr. Universe: My daughter is asking, why do bees have pointy behinds? — Asma, Pakistan

Thursday, April 19 Breakfast: Egg and cheese muffin Lunch: Turkey hot dog with baked beans or hummus munchable

Dear Asma and Friends: Lots of bees have pointy behinds, but not all of them. The ones that do have a pointy behind, or a stinger, can use it to help defend their homes, food, and fellow bees. That’s what I found out from my friend Megan Asche, a graduate student at Washington State University who studies honey bees and takes super close-up photos of insects. Asche explained that when a honey bee adult emerges, it chews through one of the waxy hexagon cells in the hive before pushing itself out into the world. For the first two days of the bee’s life, it can’t sting. The bee has a pointy behind, but the venom-releasing organs attached to her stinger are still growing. She needs to walk around and eat before the stinger fully forms.

Friday, April 20 Breakfast: Turkey sausage wrap Lunch: BBQ chicken with cornbread or cheese pizza Monday, April 23 Breakfast: Egg and cheese muffin Lunch: Chicken teriyaki with brown rice or toasted cheese stinger to damage the wax cells where her rival queen bees are growing. She also has to look for a mate. Once she has found a mate, she doesn’t need her stinger anymore. If there’s any stinging to be done, that’s the job of the worker bees. Ready for their close-up In one of the photographs Asche took in the lab, you can see that a honey bee stinger has lots of tiny sharp parts, or barbs. The little barbs on a honey bee stinger are long enough to stick in your skin. Bees don’t want to hurt you, but sometimes they will sting if they feel threatened. Once a honey bee stings you, it dies. That’s because its stinger is attached to important organs inside of the abdomen. “They are essentially making the greatest sacrifice,” Asche said.

Sting like a bee If you get stung by a bee, it’s going to be a female. Males don’t have a stinger. Female bees’ ancestors used to lay eggs inside plants or animals using a kind of shovelshaped thing on their rear end called an ovipositor. After a while, they didn’t need their ovipositor, so it stopped being used for laying eggs and instead became a stinger bees can use to help defend their home. When a new queen honey bee hatches, she will use her

chemical. The bees are basically flagging you. Other bees can sense this pheromone in the air and may show up on the scene. Their stingers may be tiny, but they sure can use them to protect their fellow bees. “Worker bees are defending their sisters,” added Asche. “They are protecting their home and their food.” In the end, a pointy stinger can help a family of bees survive. That’s really important for humans and other animals, too. Bees are pollinators. We rely on them to help plants grow and reproduce so that we can have oxygen, food, and a healthy planet. Can you think of other ways insects might defend and protect themselves in nature? Tell me about it sometime at Dr.Universe@wsu.edu.

➧ LEAP, from Page 9 minds when it comes to the question of whether her work takes on new meaning in the current political climate. “I do think that if you write a good story and the themes are resonant — it’s like Shakespeare — it will always be timely,” she said. “But there’s different aspects of it that will be refracted in really different, interesting ways depending on what time period you’re in.” At the same time, the aspects that stand out now are of particular interest. “I feel fortunate to be able to be presenting this story now,” she said. “I think now is a time when our relationships with other countries are particularly volatile and unpredictable, and that also just seeing the commonalities between countries is a particularly helpful thing to keep in mind.” That’s where basketball comes in, as a sport that both the United States and China view as part of their national identities. But beyond that, she said, it actually works as an effective metaphor for diplomatic relations.

“There are different playing styles and different strategies that you’re going to use in the game … and diplomacy’s this world in which there’s set parameters and there’s set rules, and you need to figure out how you’re going to achieve your goals within these parameters.” Just don’t expect the characters to actually put up shots on stage. That’s something Yee felt would be a bit too unpredictable to hinge any part of the plot. But her hope is that she still captured the spirit of the sport. “A lot of the scenes are a showdown between two characters, fighting for their part of the role,” she said. “I think even if you’re not watching people shooting hoops and guarding each other, I think you get the feel of a basketball game.” “The Great Leap” runs through April 22 at Seattle Repertory Theatre, before making its New York premiere in May at the Atlantic Theater Company. and avoid salty treats. Routine maintenance and veterinary care of mini pigs includes vaccinations and tusk & hoof trimming. Tusks continue to grow throughout life. They are trimmed once they become visible beyond their lips to prevent injuries to themselves and others. Overgrown hooves can cause lameness in pigs, so it is important to keep them trimmed (usually every three to four months). Mini pigs are growing in popularity as pets, and if you get a chance to interact with one you’ll see why! Please keep in mind that their specific needs are different than other domesticated pets, so it is important to evaluate your environment and lifestyle to identify any necessary adjustments prior to adding mini pigs to your home.

great companions, highly trainable, eas il y ho u s e b ro ke n, a n d ma ke wonderful pets. Even though they can really enjoy being indoors, they still need to have daily outdoor time for environmental stimulation, grazing grass, and other foraging. Rooting is a natural behavior in pigs, so they need to have access to an area they are allowed to root in. For pigs that spend a lot of time indoors, you can make a rooting box inside the house that contains stones or straw. Fulfilling your pig’s needs for environmental enrichment will help improve their temperament and contentment. Mini pigs need to be fed a diet formulated specifically for them. Feeding a commercial swine food can lead to obesity since those diets are formulated to increase weight quickly. Vitamin E degrades rapidly in the feed, so make sure the feed bag is fresh to avoid vitamin deficiencies. Salt toxicity is a very serious danger with pigs, so always supply fresh water

If you live in Seattle, chances are you have unexpectedly come across a mini pig being walked on a leash. Many places classify mini pigs as farm animals, which are not allowed to live within city limits. Seattle is one of the few cities that allows mini pigs as pets; where pet pigs even have city licenses like cats and dogs. There are multiple breeds of mini pigs, including Vietnamese pot-bellies, as well as Juliana and KuneKune crosses. The full-grown weight of these cuties is usually 60 to 150 pounds, but they can reach over 200 pounds when obese. However, even the largest mini pig is still much smaller than their barnyard counterparts, which can weigh 500 pounds or more! Pigs don’t stop growing until three years of age. So, if the piglet you are adopting has parents that are younger than that, you cannot know your piglet’s full weight potential. Mini pigs have made their way into the comfort of our homes. They are

St. Garage Work to start at Bhy Kracke Park 34th Serving Magnolia and Queen Anne since 1990

Retirement present from my wife.

BY JOE VEYERA Much of Bhy Kracke Park (1215 5th Ave. N.) will be closed to the public as construction work begins on a much-needed maintenance project later this month. Funded by the Seattle Park District’s Fix It First Initiative, crews will install pipe pile retaining walls at the pathway behind the play area, and remove a deteriorating cherry tree, which will require the closure of the play area (and pathways behind both it

and the arbor), the adjacent lawn, the lower field and the picnic/ arbor area. The work is expected to be completed by early July. While the contractor for the project — Bayshore Concrete — will work to minimize impacts to the neighborhood, the work to drive piles for the foundation of the wall will be noisy, and take about a month. Two additives were not within the budget and will not be constructed as part of this work; an additional pipe pile wall behind

the arbor along with the removal of its northern bay, and the removal of a secondary switchback pathway at the lower garden with vegetation restoration. For more information about the project, visit www.seattle.gov/ parks/about-us/current-projects/ bhy-kracke-park-improvements or contact project manager Katie Bang via email at katie.bang@seattle.gov or by phone at 206-6849286.
