Tozier stands ready for the pitch in a game against Hoquiam. Tozier would double in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning to give the Cruiser an 9-8 win.
By Skip Smith Contributing Writer
After a challenging spring season marred by rainouts, the Eatonville Cruiser boys baseball team faced a tumultuous week that culminated in an exhilarating doubleheader against the Hoquiam Grizzlies.
The week began with a rainout against Vashon on April 8, further frustrating the Cruisers who have battled frequent cancellations this season. However, the weather took a favorable turn as they squared off against Hoquiam in a doubleheader to finish the week.
In game one, Hoquiam would build a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning, but the Cruisers would plate four runs in the bottom half of that inning. After a walk and then an error put a couple runners on 1st and 3rd for Eatonville to start the
inning, the Cruisers would get on the board when Ethan Evans scored from third on a passed ball by the catcher. Brody Thirtyacre would advance to third on that same passed ball and then would score on a Santos Ruvalcaba sacrifice fly to knot the game up at 2-2. With 2 outs in the inning, Colton Herbrand singled to left and then Owen Archer followed with a walk. With runners on first and second, Michaels Stogsdill stepped to the plate and crushed a double to left that scored both runners to put the Cruisers up 4-2.
That score would hold until the top of the 6th inning when the Grizzlies would plate four more runs to take a 6-4 lead. Eatonville would leave a runner stranded at 3rd in the

bottom half of the 6th and then go down in order in the bottom half of the seventh giving the Grizzlies a 6-4 win.
Undeterred, the Cruisers rallied in the second half of the doubleheader. Behind the pitching by Payton Hanly, who allowed only one hit and struck out five batters in four innings, Eatonville surged to a 6-0 lead by the 5th inning.
With Hanly up against a pitch count, the Cruisers would bring in Herbrand in relief. The Grizzlies would get to Herbrand for a run in the 5th and three more in the 6th to climb back in the game at 6-4.
The Cruisers would play a little add on in the bottom of the 6th.
After Ethan Evans led off the inning with a four pitch walk, Justen Koch would pinch hit for Brody Thirtyacre and he would double to center field, advancing Evans to third, who would eventually score on an error by the pitcher to put the Cruisers up 7-4.
Head Coach Doug Fillbach would go to the bullpen once again and bring Aaron Tozier to pitch the 7th in relief of Herbrand. Hoquiam would rough up Tozier for four runs in the inning to take an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the inning.

ebbed and flowed, with both teams refusing to concede defeat. With the final whistle blowing and the scores deadlocked, the match entered a nerve-wracking overtime period.
Tensions soared as both teams fought tooth and nail for victory. In the dying seconds of overtime, Trent Cressman's heroic slide tackle denied Elma a last-gasp chance, forcing the game into a dramatic penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Nate Goode emerged as the hero, making crucial saves to secure a thrilling 4-3 shootout win for the Cruisers.
Buoyed by their hard-fought victory, Eatonville faced their toughest challenge yet on April 10, as they welcomed the league-leading Montesano Bulldogs to town.
Determined to avenge their earlier defeat, the Cruisers came out with guns blazing.
The game burst into life as Trent Cressman calmly converted a penalty kick, giving Eatonville an early advantage. Their relentless pressure yielded dividends once more, with Austen Quirie tapping in a delightful cross from Bennett Cole to double the lead before halftime at 2-0.
However, Montesano refused to go down without a fight, clawing their way back into the game with two scrappy goals in the second half. Despite the Bulldogs' resurgence, Eatonville's defense held firm, thanks in large part to the heroics of
Trailing by one run with one out in the inning, things started to look gloomy for the Cruisers. Michael Stogsdill would give the team a glimmer of hope as he drew a five pitch walk to put the tying run on first. Payton Hanly would follow that up with a single up the middle, advancing Stogsdill to third. With runners on first and third, Eatonville was starting to believe. Aaron Tozier stepped to the plate and crushed the first pitch he saw to center scoring Stogsdill and Hanly to secure the Cruiser 9-8 walk-off win, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Not only did that win snap the team’s eight game losing streak it also gave Eatonville their first win in the always competitive 1A Evergreen League.
Hanly would lead the Cruisers with his 3-4 performance at the plate, but it was Aaron Tozier’s 1-5 performance, driving in the game winning run that was the highlight of the day.

goalkeeper Nate Goode.
As the game entered sudden death overtime, tensions reached fever pitch. It was then that freshman Nathan Christensen etched his name into Cruisers folklore with a stunning long-range 25-yard strike, securing a memorable victory and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Riding high on their wave of momentum, Eatonville rounded off the week with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Forks Spartans.
In a closely contested first half, the Cruisers secured a goal when Ignacio Sanz skillfully slotted the ball into the far post after executing a remarkable cut that left his defender trailing to take a 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, Forks would find the back of the net and score the equalizer early. Despite maintaining the share of the possessions, the Cruisers struggled to find the decisive pass to penetrate the Spartan defense.
With just four minutes remaining in the match, Eatonville executed an impressive triangle possession play involving multiple players, culminating in a layback pass to Trent Cressman, who unleashed a powerful shot from 30 yards out, beating the goalkeeper and finding the upper left corner of the net for the 2-1 victory.
With three consecutive wins, the Cruisers find themselves locked in a battle for second place in the league

The Eatonville Cruiser girls tennis team secured a hard-fought victory against the Castle Rock Rockets on Wednesday to clinch a 3-2 win, rebounding from a previous setback to White Salmon.
The match, held on April 10 in Castle Rock, saw a spirited display of athleticism from both teams. Despite an early setback, the Lady Cruisers showcased resilience and determination throughout the competition.
In the number 1 singles match, Bailey Andersen battled but ultimately fell short, losing 4-6, 5-7. However, Alayna Meyer swiftly turned the tide with an impressive straight-set victory of 6-3, 6-3 in singles number 2. Isabel Volk then sealed the team's triumph with a

Savvy Senior: Choosing a senior community that offers all levels of care
Dear Savvy Senior,
Can you help me identify some good senior living communities that offers all levels of housing and care from independent living to nursing home care? I am in my late seventies and know I need to downsize from my current house, but I want my next move to be my last.
One Move Mary DEAR MARY,
If you want your next move to be your last, an all-inclusive retirement community – also known as a continuing-care retirement community (or CCRC) – is a great option to consider. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips to help you locate one.
WHAT ARE CCRCS?
CCRCs are different from other types of senior housing because they provide all levels of housing, services and care in one convenient location.
While the appearance and services of CCRCs can vary greatly, most provide apartments or sometimes single-family homes for active independent seniors. In addition, they also offer onsite assisted living for seniors who require help with basic living tasks like bathing, dressing or going to the bathroom, and nursing home care for residents when their health declines. CCRCs also provide a variety of resort-style amenities and services that include community dining halls, exercise facilities, housekeeping, and transportation, as well as many social and recreational activities.
But be aware that all these services come at a hefty price. Most communities have entry fees
that range from less the $100,000 to more than $1 million, plus ongoing monthly fees that generally range from $2,000 to $5,000 for singles ($3,000 to $6,000 for couples) depending on the facility, services and the contract option you choose.
With more than 2,000 CCRCs in operation throughout the U.S, finding a facility that fits your lifestyle, needs and budget will require some legwork. Here are some steps that can help you proceed.
Make a list: To find CCRCs in the area you want to live go to MyLifeSite.net and Caring.com, which provide online lists. Once you’ve located a few, call them to find out if they have any vacancies, what they charge and if they provide the types of services you want.
Take a tour: Many CCRCs encourage potential residents to stay overnight and have a few meals in their dining hall. During your visit, notice the upkeep of the facility and talk to the current residents to see how they like living there. Also, check out the assisted living and nursing facilities, and find out how decisions are made to move residents from one level of care to another.
Melva Louise McCabe (Evans)
April 10, 1951 to Feb. 28, 2024
Home with the Lord at last!
At the young age of 72, Melva died peacefully at home under the loving care of hospice, Dr. Gloria Lowe, and her loving husband Scott. Melva was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in early December 2023.
Born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, she attended public schools before moving to Washington and graduating from Auburn High school in 1969. She then attended Beauticians School and eventually opened her own shop. Next came a job as clerk/ produce manager for Gary’s Market in Seattle, joining the retail clerks union. She then took on a new job with AM/PM where she rose through the ranks to become a manager, and eventually had her own store, opening in Graham. After taking a hiatus from the formal workforce to become wife, mother, and home schooler, she became a bus driver for Eatonville School District, providing transportation for Weyerhaeuser Elementary School, retiring in 2018.
Mel, and would be husband Scott, moved to Eatonville in 1991 and bought property for their love of horses. They soon became involved as members of New Life Fellowship of Graham where she became part of Quilters for Christ, custodian, and social events coordinator. She also was involved in the AWANA and hospitality ministries. They were married there in 1997.
Kids became part of Gods plan, so they adopted 3 siblings. Lives were changed forever! Mel’s loves were kids, horses, quilting, sewing, gardening, the beach, and shopping! Her car always found garage/yard sales! Saying her car always turned into them automatically!
Mel is survived by BF & husband of 37yrs. & 27yrs. Scott. Favorite Doberman Sophie Sue. Daughters Danielle A. McDonald (Joe) with sons Isaac & William of Hope, Ark. Daughter Ashley R. McCabe of Lakewood, WA. Son Peter M. McCabe (Bernice) with daughter Elizabeth, of Fort Drum, NY. Sister Shirley Evans of Twin Falls, ID. & many beloved nephews & nieces, brothers & sisters in Christ!
Melva is preceded in death by Dad Benard Evans & Mom Evelyn Jean Evans (Donner). Brothers Randy & Merle Evans, all of Idaho.
A celebration of life memorial will be held April 27th, 2024 at 11:am, at New Life Fellowship of Graham, WA. Melva loved springtime flowers. Vases will be available for cut flowers. Reception will follow the service.
Do some research: While on your tour, find out who owns the CCRC and get a copy of their most recently audited financial statement and review it. Also find out their occupancy rate. Unless it’s a newer community filling up, occupancy below 80 percent can be a red flag that the facility is having financial or management problems.
To investigate the CCRC’s long-term care services call your state long-term care ombudsman (see LTCombudsman.org) who can tell you if the assisted living and nursing care services had any complaints or problems. You can also use Medicare’s nursing home compare tool at Medicare.gov/care-compare.
Understand the contract and fees: Most CCRCs offer three types of contracts: Life-care, or Type A contracts, which have the highest entry fee but covers all levels of long-term care as needed; Type B, or modified contracts that have lower entry fees but limits long-term care services in the initial fee; and Type C, or fee-for-service contracts, which offer the lowest entrance fees but requires you to pay extra for long-term care if you need it.
You also need to find out what yearly price increases you can expect? How much of your entry fee is refundable to you if you move or die? And what happens if you outlive your financial resources?
To help you sort through all this, consult with your financial advisor or lawyer before committing.
